Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Don't go to the movies with the lights on
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You know how everyone complains that the lights at supermarkets
- 0:02Speaker 1: are too bright. People say that to you, People say
- 0:05Speaker 1: that to me all the time. People reckon that they
- 0:06Speaker 1: do it on purpose. It's like a trick to keep
- 0:09Speaker 1: you awake. It doesn't matter what time of day it is.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Keep you awake, keep you alert, keep your shopping, keep
- 0:15Speaker 1: you buying more of their stuff. Well, the opposite is
- 0:17Speaker 1: true of movie theaters. Right, if you think about this,
- 0:21Speaker 1: you go there, they dim the lights because it makes
- 0:23Speaker 1: you feel a bit relaxed but comfortable. The screen is
- 0:27Speaker 1: kind of a sensory overload. That's the thing you're paying for.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It's coming at you like a ton of bricks, and
- 0:33Speaker 1: the lighting being dim kind of enhances the experience. Well,
- 0:36Speaker 1: can I just say that you should never go to
- 0:39Speaker 1: the movies early before they have dimmed the lights. I
- 0:43Speaker 1: went to the movies the other day in the afternoon.
- 0:45Speaker 1: My usual cinema was not showing anything at this time,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and I wanted to go to the movies. So off
- 0:50Speaker 1: I go down to wait for it Queen Street. I
- 0:53Speaker 1: know what was I thinking? So the parking, that's seventeen dollars,
- 0:56Speaker 1: that's on me forty dollars for the ticket and a
- 0:59Speaker 1: Coca Cola which went down quite smooth smoothly outrace sort
- 1:03Speaker 1: of choked on the price of the ticket. Anyway. The
- 1:06Speaker 1: cinema is empty, but the lights are on because I'm
- 1:09Speaker 1: there early, like floodlights, like supermarket lights in the cinema.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And there is precisely zero glamour about a Queen Street
- 1:17Speaker 1: movie theater in full glare. It's like when they turn
- 1:20Speaker 1: the lights on at a nightclub. The seat was so
- 1:23Speaker 1: worn and you would never see this when it's dark.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Seat was so worn on the backside and the shoulders.
- 1:29Speaker 1: There was no tread lift on the thing. Then there
- 1:32Speaker 1: were the stains, and I don't want to talk about
- 1:35Speaker 1: the stains. Actually I don't want to get into them.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Carpet was all worn and tatty. Under the seats there
- 1:40Speaker 1: was popcorn for Africa. It's like somebody vacuumed the bits
- 1:43Speaker 1: you walk on and everything else they just forgot. Now.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I'm not complaining about this, believe it or not. I
- 1:50Speaker 1: just don't really like complaining about bad experiences generally, Like
- 1:53Speaker 1: if I go to a restaurant and I don't like it,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I just don't go back. And I like going to
- 1:59Speaker 1: the movies even though I knew it was a bit
- 2:01Speaker 1: gross and tatty. I sat down. I got my coke,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and I got my popcorn, and I sat down and
- 2:07Speaker 1: I pretended it was silky otter. All I'm saying to
- 2:10Speaker 1: you this morning, dear listener, is you wouldn't go shopping
- 2:13Speaker 1: in the dark, so just do not ever visit the
- 2:17Speaker 1: movies when the lights are on. For more from Early
