- 1:39In this lessons episode, we're going to explore a hidden truth
- 1:43about expertise that no one talks about.
- 1:45Why the more you know, the less certain you become
- 1:48and why that growing uncertainty is actually your greatest advantage.
- 1:52Whether you're building companies, leading teams,
- 1:53or making high stakes decisions,
- 1:55understanding this paradox changes everything.
- 2:08Today I want to talk about, I guess, to a degree in poster syndrome,
- 2:12but in poster syndrome through a very specific context.
- 2:16Why when you get more knowledgeable,
- 2:19when you become an expert, when you achieve mastery
- 2:23in whatever it is you're trying to build,
- 2:25which is definitely at the beginning,
- 2:27what entrepreneurs are striving to achieve,
- 2:29you will start to get to a point in your journey
- 2:32where the more knowledge that you accumulate,
- 2:34the more mastery you achieve,
- 2:36you will start to have more doubt.
- 2:39And I want to unpack this concept because if you don't understand
- 2:42why you're progressing yet experiencing more doubt,
- 2:45it can be very scary, it can be very stressful for entrepreneurs.
- 2:48So where did this idea come from?
- 2:50Well, because I speak to a lot of early stage entrepreneurs
- 2:53and they all want to achieve mastery.
- 2:56They all want to get to this point in their journey
- 2:59where decisions feel easy or success feels certain
- 3:03or where their expertise eliminates all the doubt
- 3:07because they feel like they have so much doubt
- 3:09and so much stress at the beginning.
- 3:10What if I can just get to the point
- 3:12where I can handle any problem with absolute confidence?
- 3:16But there is actually, this is a fallacy, this doesn't exist
- 3:20and there is a hidden cost to deep expertise
- 3:23that nobody actually talks about.
- 3:24It's one that becomes a little bit more apparent
- 3:27the more successful you become.
- 3:28So the more you learn about building companies,
- 3:31the more you learn about building the business
- 3:33or the more expertise you gain as an entrepreneur,
- 3:36the harder the decisions get.
- 3:38The more you understand of your market
- 3:41and your circumstances, the less certain you feel.
- 3:44And counterintuitively, this growing uncertainty
- 3:47isn't a sign that you're doing anything wrong.
- 3:50It's actually evidence that you're evolving
- 3:52into the kind of entrepreneur or operator
- 3:55that builds lasting companies
- 3:58because most people think expertise brings clarity, they're wrong.
- 4:02But first, let me tell you a story.
- 4:03So last month, I sat with three founders
- 4:06at a private dinner in Miami, combined valuation,
- 4:08probably over three billion at this point
- 4:10but they weren't talking about their success.
- 4:12Instead, they were sharing something way more intimate,
- 4:14way more interesting.
- 4:15How much more uncertain they feel now
- 4:19than when they started?
- 4:20And one of them said something that really stopped me cold.
- 4:22The more I learn about building companies,
- 4:24the less confident I am about every decision.
- 4:27Five years ago, I thought I knew everything.
- 4:29Now I see a thousand ways each choice could go rock.
- 4:33And this isn't just about founders and entrepreneurs.
- 4:36This pattern shows up everywhere
- 4:38once you start looking for it.
- 4:39The senior engineer who takes longer to ship code
- 4:43because they can see all the edge cases
- 4:45or the experienced investor
- 4:46who feels less certain about deals
- 4:48because they've seen how many ways things can fail.
- 4:51Or the veteran CEO who spends more time on decisions
- 4:54because they understand the ripple effects.
- 4:56But what makes this fascinating
- 4:58is this increasing uncertainty
- 5:00isn't a bug in your development.
- 5:02It's a feature of true expertise.
- 5:05Even for a second, think back to your own journey.
- 5:07So remember when you were first starting
- 5:09and decisions felt super simple,
- 5:11you felt like you knew everything.
- 5:13The solutions seem so obvious.
- 5:15You can make all these choices pretty quickly
- 5:17without seeing all the complexities behind each choice.
- 5:21But that wasn't because you were better than
- 5:24it was because you were blind what you didn't know.
- 5:26So let's talk about this.
- 5:28What happens at this fundamental level?
- 5:30What's happening here?
- 5:30Every level of expertise you gain
- 5:33doesn't just add new knowledge.
- 5:35It multiplies the variables that you can see
- 5:37or the interactions that you can spot
- 5:39and the complexity that you can comprehend.
- 5:41So this is how it breaks down.
- 5:42When you're a beginner,
- 5:43say you see five variables.
- 5:45You consider 10 to 15 different outcomes
- 5:47or interactions and you feel pretty confident
- 5:49in your decision making
- 5:50because the scope seems manageable.
- 5:52Then you become an intermediate.
- 5:53So you see 15 different variables.
- 5:55You consider 50 to 100 different interactions
- 5:57with each one of these variables
- 5:59and then you start feeling the weight of complexity.
- 6:01Then you become an expert.
- 6:03You start to see 50 different variables
- 6:05and you have to consider a thousand
- 6:07potential interactions and outcomes.
- 6:09And then you start to understand the true scope
- 6:11of uncertainty.
- 6:12But where it gets really interesting is
- 6:14the fact that as you gain true expertise,
- 6:17your brain develops two capabilities
- 6:20at different rates,
- 6:21which is what really causes the imposter syndrome
- 6:24and the stress.
- 6:24So your brain, as you gain as a practice,
- 6:27your brain develops your ability to solve problems
- 6:29and your ability to see problems.
- 6:31So solve problems and see problems.
- 6:34But the second one, it grows faster, much faster.
- 6:37Think about it like this.
- 6:38There's a little bit of an awareness gap
- 6:40that's forming right now.
- 6:41So at two years in,
- 6:42you can spot 100 potential issues.
- 6:44But you can solve 85 years in,
- 6:46you can spot 500 potential issues,
- 6:48but you can solve 300.
- 6:5010 years in, you can spot a thousand issues,
- 6:53but you can solve 600.
- 6:54You can always solve more issues
- 6:56than when you first started,
- 6:57but you can spot a lot more issues as well.
- 7:00Because your ability to solve problems
- 7:02grows at a different rate
- 7:03than your ability to see problems.
- 7:05This creates an expert's burden.
- 7:08When your awareness of the complexity grows faster
- 7:10than your ability to handle it.
- 7:12Now, why is this especially brutal
- 7:15for high performing individuals, entrepreneurs?
- 7:17Everybody who's listening to the show right now.
- 7:19Your success depends on decisive action,
- 7:22but your expertise reveals exactly
- 7:24why everything could go wrong.
- 7:26So the more you learn,
- 7:28the heavier each decision becomes.
- 7:30Think about what happens
- 7:31as you gain true expertise.
- 7:32At first, you operate with this beginner's confidence.
- 7:36The beautiful state
- 7:37where decisions feel clear
- 7:38because you can't see their complexity.
- 7:40Your ignorance becomes your superpower
- 7:42and you move fast precisely
- 7:44because you don't know what could break.
- 7:45And something shifts.
- 7:46As your knowledge deepens,
- 7:48you start seeing systems
- 7:49instead of isolated decisions.
- 7:51Every choice reveals it's 100 potential consequences.
- 7:55What you used to take days now takes weeks.
- 7:57And it's not because you're slower.
- 7:58It's because you can see more clearly what's at stake.
- 8:01So there are three phases to this.
- 8:04The first comes the confidence phase.
- 8:06That's when you are first starting out,
- 8:08you know, just enough to act decisively.
- 8:10Everything feels clear
- 8:11because your vision is still simple.
- 8:12Then you hit the crisis phase
- 8:14where you're rapidly expanding knowledge.
- 8:16It shows you just how much could go wrong
- 8:18and your confidence decreases
- 8:20as your awareness increases.
- 8:22And each decision feels heavier
- 8:24because you can see it's full implications.
- 8:26But if you push through,
- 8:28if you push through this crisis phase,
- 8:31that's when you reach the integration phase.
- 8:33This is where expertise becomes power.
- 8:36You learn to operate with uncertainty
- 8:38rather than despite it.
- 8:40Your doubt transforms from a burden
- 8:42into highly sophisticated judgment.
- 8:45And the same awareness that makes decisions harder
- 8:47also makes them better
- 8:48because at the end of the day,
- 8:49your uncertainty isn't a weakness.
- 8:51It's your evolved understanding
- 8:54expressing itself.
- 8:56Now most people run from uncertainty
- 8:58which totally makes sense.
- 8:59They feel like it's this weakness.
- 9:01It's a proof that you don't know enough.
- 9:03But I want to reframe that idea.
- 9:06I want to reframe uncertainty.
- 9:08Your growing certainty isn't a flaw.
- 9:10It is truly evidence
- 9:11of your expanding expertise.
- 9:12I want you to think about it like this.
- 9:14When you first start anything,
- 9:15certainty comes cheap.
- 9:16You haven't seen enough fail to doubt your decisions.
- 9:18You haven't watched enough strategies
- 9:20crumble to question your assumptions.
- 9:21And to be honest,
- 9:22when you're first starting out,
- 9:23your confidence really flows from this limited view.
- 9:26But then something shifts.
- 9:27As your expertise deepens,
- 9:28you begin seeing layers that others miss.
- 9:30Every decision starts to reveal some complexities.
- 9:32Every strategy starts to show hidden weaknesses
- 9:35at what looked simple becomes sophisticated.
- 9:38And this is why the truly elite entrepreneurs
- 9:42and operators,
- 9:43I just want to take a second
- 9:44and thank Cornbread Ham for supporting today's episode.

- 10:52So if you if you peel back the layers,
- 10:54I'm not talking about when they show up into a podcast.
- 10:57If you peel back the layers,
- 10:59sometimes you will realize
- 11:01that they sound the least certain
- 11:04not because they're confused or weak.
- 11:06They're just aware of what others can't see.
- 11:09In a pivotal 2009 paper
- 11:11that was called Conditions for Intuitive Expertise
- 11:14that was published in American Psychologists,
- 11:17Daniel Cannonman and Gary Klein studied
- 11:19when expert intuition can be trusted.
- 11:21And instead of just asserting
- 11:23that more expertise leads to better decisions,
- 11:26he found something much more nuanced.
- 11:28So expertise only develops effectively
- 11:31in environments with clear feedback
- 11:33and opportunities to practice.
- 11:35Now think about what this means for decision making.
- 11:37Expertise isn't about accumulating knowledge.
- 11:40It's about developing sophisticated pattern recognition
- 11:44through repeated exposure and clear feedback loops.
- 11:47When those conditions exist,
- 11:49experts can process complex scenarios
- 11:51rapidly in ways that novices can't match.
- 11:54And this translates directly to business.
- 11:56True expertise doesn't mean simpler decisions.
- 11:58It means better ways of navigating complexity.
- 12:01Can men and clients found that the best performers
- 12:04aren't those who are the most certain,
- 12:06but those who can effectively hold
- 12:08multiple competing scenarios in mind
- 12:12while still taking decisive action.
- 12:14This explains something crucial about your journey.
- 12:16Your growing uncertainty isn't a flaw.
- 12:18It's a natural result of developing true expertise.
- 12:22As your pattern recognition deepens,
- 12:24you see more variables, more connections,
- 12:26and more potential outcomes than ever before.
- 12:29Your uncertainty isn't your enemy, it's your edge.
- 12:32But what makes this journey so challenging
- 12:34is that as your expertise grows,
- 12:36you start carrying weights that others can't even see.
- 12:40Every past failure becomes a lesson
- 12:42that complicates future decisions.
- 12:43And every success shows you how many things
- 12:46had to go right for to work out.
- 12:47And every experience adds another layer of nuance to consider.
- 12:51It's like trying to sprint while carrying an invisible backpack
- 12:54that gets heavier with each step.
- 12:56And this creates a unique kind of pressure
- 12:58because your team wants clear answers,
- 13:00but you see endless nuance,
- 13:02investors want confident projections,
- 13:04but you see countless variables,
- 13:06the market wants decisive action,
- 13:08but you see all these intricate dependencies.
- 13:10And the real kicker is that the more successful you become,
- 13:12the more this intensifies.
- 13:14Why?
- 13:15Because bigger decisions, higher stakes,
- 13:17more complex systems, and larger ripple effects.
- 13:20But where it gets interesting
- 13:22is at some point something shifts.
- 13:24You stop fighting the complexity.
- 13:26You evolve, you start using it.
- 13:28Your uncertainty becomes a tool
- 13:30rather than a burden.
- 13:31Remember that study?
- 13:32This is when you hit expertise.
- 13:34This happens when you realize that being less certain
- 13:36makes you more accurate and seeing more problems
- 13:39helps you build better solutions.
- 13:41Understanding complexity leads to simpler strategies
- 13:44and your doubt is actually sophisticated,
- 13:47pattern recognition.
- 13:48Most people never grasp what really happens
- 13:51as you gain deep expertise.
- 13:52They think the goal is to eliminate uncertainty.
- 13:55To become so knowledgeable,
- 13:56a doubt disappears.
- 13:57They're looking at it backwards.
- 13:59True expertise doesn't mean eliminating uncertainty.
- 14:02It transforms it.
- 14:03The same awareness that makes you pause
- 14:05before decisions also lets you spot
- 14:07opportunities others miss.
- 14:09Your slower pace is never going to be the weakness.
- 14:11It's the foundation of systems that actually scale.
- 14:14You think about how your mind evolves
- 14:16as expertise deepens.
- 14:17First comes pattern recognition.
- 14:19You start to see rhymes in the chaos,
- 14:22market shifts, whisper to you before they're so obvious.
- 14:24Team dynamics reveal themselves
- 14:26and subtle signals that others miss completely.
- 14:28Then you develop strategic depth
- 14:30so you stop thinking in simple steps
- 14:32and you start seeing entire systems.
- 14:34Each decision reveals its ripple effects.
- 14:37You map implications that others can't even imagine.
- 14:40And finally, you have nuanced execution.
- 14:43You move not just with speed but with precision.
- 14:46Every action considers scale
- 14:48and every choice leaves room for adaptation.
- 14:51Because the best operators,
- 14:52the best entrepreneurs, the best founders,
- 14:54the best people in the world
- 14:56at what they do, they don't fight their doubt.
- 14:58They leverage it.
- 14:59Their uncertainty becomes a lens
- 15:01that reveals opportunities
- 15:02and their awareness of complexity
- 15:04becomes their strategic advantage.
- 15:06And this is why true expertise
- 15:07often feels like this paradox.
- 15:09The more you know, the more questions you have.
- 15:11The deeper your understanding,
- 15:12the greater your uncertainty.
- 15:13But that's exactly what makes it valuable.
- 15:15Because while others rush the judgment,
- 15:18you see a full picture.
- 15:19When others chase certainty,
- 15:20you navigate with this sophistication.
- 15:23And when other people follow formulas,
- 15:25you move with nuance.
- 15:26Your doubt isn't your weakness.
- 15:27It's your evolved understanding,
- 15:29expressing itself,
- 15:30and that's what I want you to understand.
- 15:32So going forward,
- 15:33this is what changes everything.
- 15:34The moment you realize
- 15:35that you're increasing uncertainty
- 15:37is not a weakness.
- 15:38It is your evolved understanding,
- 15:40expressing itself.
- 15:41This shifts how you make decisions,
- 15:43how you lead teams,
- 15:44how you build systems,
- 15:45how you navigate complexity.
- 15:47Because the truth about expertise
- 15:49is that it's never about having all the answers.
- 15:51It's about having sophistication
- 15:53to ask better questions.
- 15:55Not about being certain.
- 15:56It's about being capable
- 15:58despite uncertainty.
- 15:59And that's sophisticated uncertainty.
- 16:01That's your superpower.
- 16:03Use it.
