- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. It's the podcast for the
- 0:07Speaker 1: time poor parent who just wants answers.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Now, Hey, Kylie, I'm going to share a story just
- 0:12Speaker 2: now that might be a bit embarrassing for you.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Are you going to incriminate me?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Maybe just a little bit, And I'm going to make
- 0:16Speaker 2: myself look really good at the same time.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Oh, they're the best stories, aren't they. Hanns what I think?
- 0:22Speaker 2: My name's doctor Justin Colson, the author of all these
- 0:24Speaker 2: books about how to make your families and relationships happier.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm not sure if it's going to work today here
- 0:29Speaker 2: with Kylie wife co host Mum to our six kids.
- 0:33Speaker 2: So we bought a new car a little, oh maybe
- 0:35Speaker 2: about a year and a half ago, two years ago,
- 0:38Speaker 2: because we've got a big family. It was a brand
- 0:39Speaker 2: new key a Carnival. First time we've ever bought a
- 0:41Speaker 2: new car in ever ever and not sponsored by the
- 0:45Speaker 2: way hashtag not sponsored. But gosh, we love that car.
- 0:49Speaker 2: What a fantastic car. If you've got a big family.
- 0:51Speaker 3: You know what I love about it the most?
- 0:52Speaker 2: In need event, go for it? What do you love
- 0:53Speaker 2: about it the most?
- 0:54Speaker 1: It's got all of these senses, so it tells you
- 0:56Speaker 1: when there's things that are.
- 0:58Speaker 3: In the way you seeing, you can't.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You can't, like, you can't have an accident in a
- 1:03Speaker 1: car like that.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Do you do?
- 1:04Speaker 2: You know what story I'm going to tell?
- 1:05Speaker 3: What story? Are you going to tell about the accident
- 1:07Speaker 3: that you had? What accident I've had an accident?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, So we had the car for just a couple
- 1:12Speaker 2: of months at most, and so our garage is always
- 1:15Speaker 2: pretty full of stuff, and therefore when we turn the
- 1:18Speaker 2: car on, all the sensors go bbbby bip all the time.
- 1:23Speaker 2: So Kylie gets into the car and the sensors start
- 1:27Speaker 2: going as you would probably expect. She pops into a
- 1:31Speaker 2: reverse and begins reversing. The door was open, but there
- 1:34Speaker 2: was a car parked, a car parked behind the Keya.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Our Let's face it, it was a small car.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Our teenage daughter drives a sedan, a full sized family sedan.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Now you're making it sound really bad. It's much smaller
- 1:49Speaker 3: than the Kia.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Anything's much smaller than the Keya unless it's a semi trailer.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Kylie reverses the car didn't bother because all the senses
- 1:57Speaker 2: are going off and they always do.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Didn't bother?
- 1:59Speaker 2: To actually check the three hundred and sixty degree camera
- 2:03Speaker 2: that is displayed on the.
- 2:04Speaker 1: The care has the best camera ever on Like I
- 2:06Speaker 1: am incriminating myself here, The care has the best camera
- 2:10Speaker 1: I've ever seen.
- 2:11Speaker 2: On this eight inch color display that shows you everything
- 2:14Speaker 2: that's happening around the car.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Well, it only works if you look at the camera.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I wasn't looking at the camera.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Every obstacle that's there reversed tobol first right into the sedan.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So luckily, luckily your sedan slumper bar it's plastic, and
- 2:33Speaker 1: it bounce back.
- 2:34Speaker 2: It sustained all of the damage and it still hasn't
- 2:37Speaker 2: been fixed nearly two years later. But I remember you
- 2:41Speaker 2: came to my office and I was on a call.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I couldn't be disturbed, but I knew that things weren't good.
- 2:46Speaker 2: And then you grabbed a piece of paper and wrote, I.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Crashed the car. Just crashed the car.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And then ran off crying. So I obviously got off
- 2:57Speaker 2: the call as quickly as I could walk into the garage,
- 2:58Speaker 2: saw it and was like, oh gosh. And then I
- 3:01Speaker 2: remembered the lesson that I want to emphasize now. And
- 3:03Speaker 2: we've talked about it on the podcast. Before, but I
- 3:05Speaker 2: remembered the lesson and it was an important one. People matter, things, don't.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Well, I'm glad that I taught you that lesson.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well, you gave me an opportunity to practice the lesson.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And I remember specifically what I said to you. Do
- 3:19Speaker 2: you remember what I said? No? I said two things.
- 3:22Speaker 2: First of all, I said, I love you. I said, Kylie,
- 3:25Speaker 2: you're feeling really awful right now, aren't you? And you nodded,
- 3:28Speaker 2: and I was like, and I love you. And then
- 3:31Speaker 2: I continued, and I think I was a little bit cheeky.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I said something along the lines of, isn't it horrible
- 3:36Speaker 2: when we ignore those warning beeps and forget to look
- 3:38Speaker 2: at the big color screen that show says what's behind us?
- 3:43Speaker 2: And then you started crying again.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Well, I think there's another lesson that comes out of
- 3:47Speaker 3: that as well.
- 3:47Speaker 2: We did hug and you took it.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Humor helps. Humor does well, it does.
- 3:51Speaker 2: So what's the challenge for our families today to help
- 3:53Speaker 2: their families to be happier to crash the car?
- 3:57Speaker 3: That's definitely a good tip.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Challenge accepted. Do you have another one?
- 4:01Speaker 3: I do.
- 4:04Speaker 1: When things go wrong today and inevitably, at some point,
- 4:07Speaker 1: something will, something will be in our path and it
- 4:10Speaker 1: will challenge us. Find the opportunity to remember that people matter,
- 4:16Speaker 1: things don't.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And then give your kids a great big hug and
- 4:18Speaker 2: say I love you more than I love that really
- 4:20Speaker 2: expensive thing that you're smashed, and we can work that out.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Let's just make sure you're okay first. We really hope
- 4:26Speaker 2: you enjoyed this tip. Short, sweet, simple, and a bit
- 4:29Speaker 2: of fun. The Happy Families podcast is produced by Justin
