- 0:00Melissa Shere Beek: I'm Melissa Beek, and welcome to Beek on Being. Almost twenty five years ago, I started a weekly column in a section of the Miami Herald highlighting topics, writing about being human, and the connective thread we all share. Also giving a special mention to people working to heal the world, coming from a place of kindness and invested in community, I covered what we all discussed in experience. I feel this podcast is a natural extension of that. This podcast is a safe place for everyone to share personal or professional perspectives, to talk openly, ask questions without fear, reconnect, to learn, and to grow.
- 0:35From silly to serious to sublime, it's all about communication and connection. We've got to keep learning, keep growing, and keep being. This is Beak on Being. And today's episode, Beek on Being sisters. Woo hoo.
- 0:52I've got my sisters here today with me. I got all my sisters with me. I'm so happy to introduce them. I've got Sam or Sammy Jo Hi. The blondie over here Oh god.
- 1:04And the baby over there, Jess
- 1:06Jessica Shere: Hi. Jessica.
- 1:09Melissa Shere Beek: So?
- 1:10Jessica Shere: Hey ho. Hey
- 1:11Melissa Shere Beek: ho. So I was talking about our relationship and there's something special about Sisters that no matter what it is. We you're picking up stuff off the couch already?
- 1:24Samantha Shere Sharpe: I thought she was wanting to
- 1:25Melissa Shere Beek: But help my hair I've always felt and you can correct me if I'm wrong. But no questions asked. We're always there for each other. We've gotten each other's Okay. And we've gone through serious shit over the years.
- 1:39But there's just this beauty in knowing that I can count on you two, and I feel like you guys feel that way about me.
- 1:45Jessica Shere: Yeah. You don't need as many friends.
- 1:48Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. So that was what I was gonna say.

- 1:59Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. They don't need anybody else.
- 2:02Melissa Shere Beek: But when people meet us and not knowing us or our family, when people meet us nowadays
- 2:07Jessica Shere: Uh-huh. They don't They
- 2:08Melissa Shere Beek: don't put us together at all.
- 2:09Jessica Shere: Not
- 2:09Melissa Shere Beek: at Like, we're three totally totally different personalities and put us together still. You do?
- 2:16Jessica Shere: I do. I think it's always the three of us. Like, when
- 2:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: we When we go to say the Shere sisters, when they hear our last name, they put us together. But seeing us and not knowing us
- 2:27Jessica Shere: But then they eventually figure it out.
- 2:29Melissa Shere Beek: When they see us together, they figure it out. But if they meet us individually, I don't think they put us together.
- 2:35Jessica Shere: Maybe not. But okay.
- 2:36Melissa Shere Beek: So I read about, like, birth order stuff. Yeah. And it says, firstborn traits. They're responsible, independent, rule followers, hard workers, reliable, and caretaker role.
- 2:49Jessica Shere: That's you.
- 2:50Samantha Shere Sharpe: Shit. I'm wondering what's the No.
- 2:51Melissa Shere Beek: The second second I see. Second born traits, adaptable, creative
- 2:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: That's true.
- 2:57Melissa Shere Beek: Sociable

- 3:29Melissa Shere Beek: Oh my god.
- 3:30Do you think birth order plays a part in our personalities?
- 3:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yes.
- 3:34Jessica Shere: Yes.
- 3:35Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yes. A 100%. Yes.
- 3:36Jessica Shere: Yeah? I actually do.
- 3:38Melissa Shere Beek: Why?
- 3:39Jessica Shere: I just think, like, the firstborn's always supposed to the responsible motherly one. The middle one, maybe gets lost in the shuffle sometimes.
- 3:50Melissa Shere Beek: I don't think she gets lost. I think she's like, I'm out doing my own shit.
- 3:52Thank you. Bye. Yeah.

- 5:00Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh my god.
- 5:01Jessica Shere: That's so cute.
- 5:01Melissa Shere Beek: My shirt says, I'm the firstborn. I follow the rules. Sam's is second born. I'm not I'm the reason there were
- 5:10Samantha Shere Sharpe: rules. There are rules.
- 5:11Melissa Shere Beek: There are rules. And wait. Third born? Jess, what did you say?
- 5:15Jessica Shere: It says, wait.
- 5:16There were rules?
- 5:17Melissa Shere Beek: And but the I was thinking, though, because you brought up, like, your parenting styles are different. Wait. You have to get the phone? No.
- 5:25No. No. I was saying your parenting styles are different because of the way you said we were raised. So I'm thinking even, you know, same parents raised us, even growing up in the house, totally different rules for me than for you all. Because you're you're shaking your head.
- 5:42Jessica Shere: I think it might Rules for you. Rules for you.
- 5:45Samantha Shere Sharpe: No rules
- 5:45Melissa Shere Beek: for No rules for Jess. No. There were rules. No. There were no rules.
- 5:49Samantha Shere Sharpe: There were rules.
- 5:50Rules, but not to the extent that I felt like I had.
- 5:54Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. So this is probably an inappropriate Who is Samantha? No. Okay.
- 6:00Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, no. No. No. Well, yes. I stole the car.
- 6:02But that's
- 6:03Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. Well, that's the best story ever because I was gonna talk about grounding. So when I was a teenager do you remember daddy had the extra the van was an extra car that we had? So he used to let me drive the van and
- 6:16Jessica Shere: do it up. Play
- 6:16Melissa Shere Beek: the music. The van that played Yeah. The Yeah. It had like 30 different
- 6:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: I love that.
- 6:20Jessica Shere: Sounds almost orange.
- 6:21Samantha Shere Sharpe: Think it every time we get to the messenger's house, I got to pick which one I got to play.
- 6:24Melissa Shere Beek: What did you play?
- 6:25Samantha Shere Sharpe: I had number 36. I don't remember. Was a
- 6:27whole set. Crazy. I don't
- 6:29know. It had that many options back then. Oh my god. Were so many options. Remember he had a sheet.
- 6:34Yeah. And you could press the number and it played whatever song it was. Oh, yeah. There was like 40 options.
- 6:39Melissa Shere Beek: When mom walked out, daddy would play the old gray mare just
- 6:42Samantha Shere Sharpe: like I just remember the joy of pulling up to the messenger's house and getting to choose whatever song I Wait.
- 6:47Jessica Shere: We drove it from our house to the messenger.
- 6:50Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Next door.
- 6:51Right next door. Next door.
- 6:52Literally next door.
- 6:53Jessica Shere: Yeah. To go to road trip.
- 6:55Melissa Shere Beek: It was. It was.
- 6:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: It was to go to school. I don't remember, but oh, that was the best.
- 6:59Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. Because there was, Remember when
- 7:00Samantha Shere Sharpe: he had Seven of us. Installed in the van? Oh, that van was the best. That The van was the remember the colors. It had a stripe on the side that was, like, air around.
- 7:08Jessica Shere: It was like orange and brown. Yes. Yes.
- 7:10Melissa Shere Beek: It was very seventies. On the side too.
- 7:12Samantha Shere Sharpe: It did. It was hot around
- 7:14Melissa Shere Beek: the side. And it had a table in the back, a little round
- 7:17Jessica Shere: table in
- 7:17Melissa Shere Beek: the back. I remember that.
- 7:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, that was the best car ever.
- 7:21We had the best car.
- 7:21The car I stole, though.
- 7:22Melissa Shere Beek: That's not no. You stole you stole the stole them. Cadillac.
- 7:26Samantha Shere Sharpe: The Cadillac. The black Caddy.
- 7:28Jessica Shere: Was it the mom's car?
- 7:29Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Was mom's, like No.
- 7:31Jessica Shere: Dad had a Mark seven. And maybe it was not
- 7:33Samantha Shere Sharpe: this was the black, big black
- 7:34Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, yeah. Caddy.
- 7:36Jessica Shere: No. Mark seven was like a
- 7:38I remember daddy wanted that.
- 7:40Samantha Shere Sharpe: Then dad also had a blue jaguar. Remember that one?
- 7:43Smelled like weed. Ghost in it.
- 7:45Jessica Shere: I don't remember that.
- 7:46Samantha Shere Sharpe: That smelled like weed. Dad, and I had no idea dad was smoking.
- 7:49Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. So this is the whole story he's gonna say about the van.
- 7:51Samantha Shere Sharpe: We really we really went sidetracked. No. No. You brought me right
- 7:54Melissa Shere Beek: back around. This is the best thing. So I had I got to drive the van. And one day, daddy knocked on the door of my bedroom, and he was screaming.
- 8:02Jessica Shere: Oh, I know the story.
- 8:03Melissa Shere Beek: He had a horrible, horrible temper, and he was screaming, screaming, how could you screaming about a joint he found underneath the front seat of the van. I had no idea what the hell he was talking about. And I was hysterical hysterical in the room crying. And I was saying, I didn't do anything. I've never tried anything.
- 8:21I don’t use drugs. Totally fear of Gd. And and I was
- 8:26like, you could take me
- 8:27to the hospital and have me blood tested. Never done any I was hysterical, hysterical. He's like, you're grounded for life and closed the door, and I'm, like, hours crying. And then, like, a really bad SNL skit, he comes back and knocks on the door, and he's hysterical laughing. He can't even keep his face straight.
- 8:44And mom's laughing behind him too. It's their fucking joint. Yeah. And then he says to me, oh, it must and he through laughter, he's saying, it must have been one of the workmen. I'm gonna have to fire him tomorrow morning.
- 8:57And they, like, laugh down the hall or whatever.
- 9:00Okay.
- 9:00Jessica Shere: Have no clue.
- 9:01Melissa Shere Beek: Ten years later no. No. No. Ten years later, I don't know.
- 9:06Mom and dad are going through closets. I don't know whose closets. There was a joint in one of them. There was a joint in one of them. And then, well, I don't it was yours.
- 9:15There was a joint in one of And
- 9:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: It was yours?
- 9:18Melissa Shere Beek: And daddy says, daddy What's it? They light it up because they say, we're not sure if this is a cigarette or a joint. I was like, you know, if I ever first of all, I looked at them like, you're the same parents who grounded me for life, and now you're just, like, lighting up to see what it is, and it wasn't mine. But and I never did it. But I was like, are you fucking kidding me?
- 9:41I would not be alive today if I tried to pull any of the crap that either of you two No.
- 9:47Jessica Shere: Got away Because I it was mine, but I didn't smoke till after high school.
- 9:51Melissa Shere Beek: No. That's what I'm saying.
- 9:52It was you were at college.
- 9:54Jessica Shere: But oh, I was? It was you came home from college. Then it was about me.
- 9:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh my god.
- 9:58Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. But the thing is is I'm saying I would never be alive were to number two. You know? That one? You wanna tell us why you were grounded?
- 10:06You were grounded. You were ground no. You don't have to tell us why you're grounded. You were also grounded for a month. But what did you do with that grounding?
- 10:13Samantha Shere Sharpe: First of all. First of Wait. Wait. I want what
- 10:15Melissa Shere Beek: did you do with that grounding?
- 10:16Samantha Shere Sharpe: Let wait. Let's take it back for a second because I don't even know why I was grounded.
- 10:22Jessica Shere: Oh, I know why.
- 10:22Melissa Shere Beek: Know why you were grounded, but we're not gonna say.
- 10:24Samantha Shere Sharpe: What did I do?
- 10:25Melissa Shere Beek: Something through the window.
- 10:27Jessica Shere: Probably let the cat in or something. No. I know it's not the cat.
- 10:30Samantha Shere Sharpe: So no boy can could slide in the window. I may have turned off the alarm, which triggered the chime of the front door so I can let a boy in.
- 10:39Jessica Shere: That could through the window.
- 10:41Melissa Shere Beek: No. I can't get through the atrium.
- 10:43You hid in mom's closet.
- 10:45Samantha Shere Sharpe: No. That's a that's a whole other story. He came through the front door, the back door, the side door. I don't know, but I could turn off the chime as every time you opened up the
- 10:53Jessica Shere: front door, know how to do You need that let me know how
- 10:56that works now.
- 10:56Melissa Shere Beek: I don't
- 10:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: know how I know. I don't know where it's I knew where it was found. Used to see Cat in through the window.
- 11:02Jessica Shere: Yes. That you did.
- 11:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: Okay. So I hate that idea. But I don't think it was the boy snuck in, but I was grounded.
- 11:09Melissa Shere Beek: And And what did you do with your grounding?
- 11:11Samantha Shere Sharpe: I didn't I didn't follow it.
- 11:14Melissa Shere Beek: What did you do?
- 11:15Jessica Shere: I decided I was leaving the house to go pick up my friend in her car at the age of 15.
- 11:19Melissa Shere Beek: Without a license.
- 11:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: Without a well, no. So the car
- 11:22Melissa Shere Beek: with a learner's for it and figure I mean, the balls to do that.
- 11:25Jessica Shere: Back then too.
- 11:27Melissa Shere Beek: My god. I would be terrified.
- 11:30Samantha Shere Sharpe: The funny thing is I had told my kids this story so many times. I was so sure one of them would have done it. No. I don't I know just, it wasn't that I didn't wanna be a rule follower, because I feel like I'm such a rule follower now.
- 11:44Melissa Shere Beek: True.
- 11:45Samantha Shere Sharpe: I just think mom's threats were just threat. Like, she wasn't ever following through. And I knew I think in my mind, I knew that I can go to dad, and dad would
- 11:55Jessica Shere: talk Just to be whatever.
- 11:56Melissa Shere Beek: And daddy let us do anything.
- 11:57Jessica Shere: Oh, he didn't care.
- 11:58Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. He was scared of mom.
- 12:00Melissa Shere Beek: Yeah. That was the thing. If you crossed a line, he had her back, not
- 12:04us.
- 12:04Jessica Shere: I remember waiting to go outside to the mailbox to get my report card. Wait. Because I didn't want mom to get to it first. I always wanted dad to get to it first. So I remember taking it out of the mailbox.
- 12:15Melissa Shere Beek: And then Did you ever alter it?
- 12:17Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, hell yeah.
- 12:18Jessica Shere: Oh, gd no.
- 12:21How do
- 12:21Melissa Shere Beek: you alter reports? I don't know. I've never tried it.
- 12:24Samantha Shere Sharpe: It wasn't tight, but I remember there were certain times where like a teacher would have to sign something or put a grade in like mom used to come make us make papers and have the teacher sign if we did the homework. I remember the teacher would like do a grade or something if it was like a numerical grade and I could with the red pen
- 12:39Melissa Shere Beek: change it. Really?
- 12:40Samantha Shere Sharpe: Oh, I would forge her signature mom's signature all the time.
- 12:43Melissa Shere Beek: Oh
- 12:43Samantha Shere Sharpe: my Maybe I'm really bad.
- 12:46Melissa Shere Beek: You're not bad.
- 12:47Samantha Shere Sharpe: I should've let all this shit out. No. You're not good.
- 12:49Melissa Shere Beek: You
- 12:50were you've listen. You had balls that none of us had. I thought that was amazing. I you did back don't then. Know
- 12:57Samantha Shere Sharpe: so I hate to say this. I was felt like I was so punished all the time. Like, I had to, like Yeah. I had to, like, be normal. Like, not be punished all the time.
- 13:06I don't know why this is ugh. I don't know where this is going.
- 13:09Melissa Shere Beek: Do you have happy, good memories?
- 13:11Jessica Shere: I do.
- 13:12Melissa Shere Beek: Okay. Good. Lay it on us.
- 13:14Jessica Shere: I just okay. Don't remember that much. We're the best.
- 13:19Samantha Shere Sharpe: We're the best block.
- 13:20Jessica Shere: Oh. I remember stories for you guys. Best block.
- 13:23Samantha Shere Sharpe: We had the best block.
- 13:24Melissa Shere Beek: Wait. What story were you gonna say? And then we'll What get back to the story? What Disney story?
- 13:28Jessica Shere: With the me bouncing on the bed.
- 13:30Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, you were a shit stirrer. We always got in trouble because of you. Yeah. But it was you who was doing it. Do you remember when we all went to Disney, and we're all in the same hotel room, and she was in the cot, and you and I were in one bed, and mom and dad were in the other bed.
- 13:42And she just kept jumping on the cot and jumping on the bed and jumping on the cot. She was causing so much shit. And then just before mom would get up to turn on the light, Jessica would go back down on the cot, and she'd be, like, faking a sleeping.
- 13:53Samantha Shere Sharpe: I could see her doing that.
- 13:53Melissa Shere Beek: And mom was yelling
- 13:54Samantha Shere Sharpe: She could at still do that right now.
- 13:55Melissa Shere Beek: She could Girl,
- 13:56Samantha Shere Sharpe: she would totally would do that right now.
- 13:58Melissa Shere Beek: She The best trick you ever pulled was like, oh, when I would come home from college, and I'd be like, oh, Sissie
- 14:05wait. Will you rub my back?
- 14:06And then I promise after you rub my back
- 14:08Jessica Shere: I would never.
- 14:08Melissa Shere Beek: I'll rub your back. And I was like, okay. That's great. And like, you'd fake a sleep after I rubbed your back. You're like, that's it.
- 14:14Samantha Shere Sharpe: And then never yeah. She would still do that and you would. I know you would.
- 14:18Jessica Shere: I’d be like, my god. I gotta go.
- 14:20Samantha Shere Sharpe: She's still the baby sister.
- 14:22Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, a 100%.
- 14:23Samantha Shere Sharpe: She would be like, tickle my arm, play with my hair.
- 14:26Jessica Shere: I would. I totally I would. I totally
- 14:29Melissa Shere Beek: And and we we indulge you.
- 14:31Jessica Shere: Yeah It it's it's easier to get through life with you too.

- 14:36Jessica Shere: You're welcome. You make it easier.
- 14:39Melissa Shere Beek: Thank you.
- 14:40Yep. Do you have, like, moments that you think back that, like, strong Impressions that really stuck with you about, like, sisterhood?
- 14:49Jessica Shere: I mean, the biggest moment for me personally was many years ago when I needed the support from you two.
- 14:56Melissa Shere Beek: Oh, yeah. Well, we love you.
- 14:58Jessica Shere: But it just reassures Yeah. You know, that you have people that support you and are there for you and will do anything for you and understand.

- 15:07Jessica Shere: That's very nice.
- 15:08Melissa Shere Beek: We love a little baby.
- 15:10And Sam?
- 15:12Samantha Shere Sharpe: Can I think what was the question?
- 15:14Melissa Shere Beek: Can you repeat the question,
- 15:15Samantha Shere Sharpe: please? Blonde.
- 15:16Melissa Shere Beek: Blonde. No. Is there any strong impression or story that stuck with you over the years about like sisterhood? Like, oh, yeah. This is this is just new.
- 15:25Jessica Shere: I love be a sisterhood. I have. Yeah. Have started. You just knew.
- 15:28Samantha Shere Sharpe: I feel like when you had Mollie and I would come to your house in Iguana, and I was just always there. And I don't know if it's from pictures and me me remembering pictures sitting on the porch when Mollie was dressed as a pumpkin. Oh, yeah.
- 15:41Melissa Shere Beek: I remember that. Like Oh, that's thirty years.
- 15:43Samantha Shere Sharpe: Yeah. So, like, that's the memories that I have. I mean, I do remember, I hate to say, when you had gotten, like, blood poisoning from a razor, and mom was like Oh. And you couldn't you couldn't go back to college, and mom was like, get your shit together
- 15:59Jessica Shere: Mom, going to to a doctor. Doctor.
- 16:00Samantha Shere Sharpe: I remember exactly where you were sitting in the playroom.
- 16:03Melissa Shere Beek: In the playroom.
- 16:03Samantha Shere Sharpe: Remember it, like, yesterday. Do you
- 16:05Melissa Shere Beek: remember what Jessica said?
- 16:06Jessica Shere: No. What did I say?
- 16:08Oh, you'll be fucking fine. No. I said
- 16:10Melissa Shere Beek: You said you you bet
- 16:11it was, like, three days. My foot was swollen. It was, like, moving up towards my knee. I couldn't walk. I couldn't put pressure on it.
- 16:17And I kept saying, somebody needs to take me somewhere because this is really bad.
- 16:21Jessica Shere: Oh, yeah.
- 16:21Melissa Shere Beek: I remember. Jessica came in the playroom because I was sitting there. They made me put, like, my
- 16:24foot in Nepsen sauce. There that bad couch in the middle of the playroom.
- 16:28Jessica Shere: Wicker couch? Yeah.
