Latest / BREAK/FIX the Motorsports & Vehicle Enthusiast Variety Show / BYD, MG and Vento: Chinese EVs Invading Mexico
Transcript
- 0:00John Summers is the motoring historian.
- 0:02He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into
- 0:06a fairly inept sports bike rider.
- 0:08Hailing from California, he collects cars and bikes built with plenty of
- 0:12cheap and fast, and not much reliable.
- 0:15On his show, he gets together with various co hosts to talk about new
- 0:18and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, and motoring travel.
- 0:34Good day, good morning, good afternoon.
- 0:36It is John Summers, the motoring historian.
- 0:39Went to Mexico over Christmas and the New Year.
- 0:43Didn't intend to have any sort of, you know, it wasn't like a motoring
- 0:46focused trip or anything like that.
- 0:48But whilst I was there, There were interesting cars.
- 0:51So I thought I'd put together this sort of, you know, motorcycles of Mexico.
- 0:56I was originally going to call it, but really what's more interesting
- 0:59is a number of Chinese EVs that there are in, in, in Mexico.
- 1:04And, and I guess, uh, my podcast bros.
- 1:08We're talking about the number of BYDs there are on the street, uh, on the
- 1:12streets of Dubai, where, where they are.
- 1:15And, uh, that set me thinking there weren't so many in Puerto Vallarta
- 1:19where we stayed, but there were a lot of Chinese EVs in Mexico city.
- 1:24Yeah.
- 1:25So, uh, the invasion of the Chinese it's, it's really here.
- 1:28Um, I guess my, my first thought of it was when we were standing in
- 1:32immigration before we even, um, went into the country, there was a Giliad.
- 1:37And, uh, my first thought of translating the money was, uh,
- 1:41it was under 600, 000 pesos.
- 1:44And I was like, what the devil is that in, in meaningful money?
- 1:48Well, under 25 grand us.
- 1:50So in other words, those.
- 1:53Domestic OEM makers who, uh, who won't sell you a car for less than 40 grand.
- 2:00These guys, they're selling you a car for 20 grand, 25.
- 2:04It was like, this was like a RAV4 ish CRV kind of affair.
- 2:08It looked like a last generation RAV4, frankly.
- 2:12So, this is my note, you know, the invasion is well underway.
- 2:16So, we rode in BYD cabs.
- 2:18This is build your dreams.
- 2:20That's what it stands for.
- 2:21Now, I should say I first heard of them when they came to
- 2:24San Francisco with the buses.
- 2:26The bus company was BYD.
- 2:28Then probably two or three years ago, they bought a spot on Peter
- 2:33Hay Hill for pebble beach week.
- 2:35So, you know, if you come to pebble beach, as you walk down the hill,
- 2:38before you get in the show, usually the carmakers like, you know, my back or.
- 2:43Bentley or Bugatti.
- 2:44They might have a spot there.
- 2:45We'll be wide deeded as well.
- 2:47Just to be like, Hey, we're building cars.
- 2:50I had some chewing gum.
- 2:51I remember.
- 2:52That they gave away.
- 2:53Not very tasty gum, but I didn't hold that against BYD.
- 3:06So I guess the headline about these BYD cabs is that one of the cabs we
- 3:12rode in had 200, 000 kilometers on it.
- 3:17And it was wearing it, you know, like a taxi cab would, you know,
- 3:20it looked like it had done 200, it looked like he'd done plenty of
- 3:23miles, but it was still together.
- 3:25The panel fit was there.
- 3:26It was, you know, it was walking and talking like a Nissan or a
- 3:30Toyota might look at that's really the headlight here that the Mexican
- 3:34market used to be all about Nissan's.
- 3:37Didn't it?
- 3:37I remember going there 20 years ago when you couldn't move for two The Nissan
- 3:42Sentra, which they had badged there as the Tazuruti, as you are you, like
- 3:48everything was that, and they, they loved the stick shift ones, not the
- 3:51automatics because they lasted longer.
- 3:53You know, that was why.
- 3:54And I remember asking a cabbie why Nissan, not Toyota.
- 3:58And he was like, Toyota is for the personal car, but Nissan is the work car.
- 4:02I always, uh, always remember him saying that.
- 4:04Well, anyway, The Centras, there are Centras there.
- 4:07And a couple of the cabs we rode in were Centras and stick shift Centras,
- 4:12but yeah, a lot of these, a lot of these BYDs complete model range, like
- 4:17a little, like, you know, like Fiesta sized one and like a sort of, you
- 4:23know, Ford C Max sized one, you know, and a sort of RAV4 CRV sized one.
- 4:32They seem to be a complete.
- 4:33Model range for, uh, for, for BYD.
- 4:37Now, look, you're not going to mistake it for a new Audi in
- 4:40terms of build quality or design.
- 4:43If you were Nissan, you would be absolutely quaking in your boots.
- 4:50Uh, how good these, these products are.
- 4:53Uh, the, the BYD SUV, particularly, it had the feel of a Kia about it.
- 4:59You know, the, the design was exciting as well as it.
- 5:03Visibly, as well as you being aware that it was, you know, a, a very, a
- 5:07very well priced product, the little BYD SUV, uh, the little BYD, like car sized
- 5:14thing, it has like a little Chevron in the, in it's like hip line, you know,
- 5:20are you looking at it being like alpha one, five, nine, eat your heart out?
- 5:23No.
- 5:24Is it a lot more design flair than I was expecting from a
- 5:29first generation Chinese maker.
- 5:32Oh, absolutely.
- 5:33I looked for the panel fit to be bad.
- 5:36It wasn't, there was a pink, a sort of movie pink.
- 5:39One of these little BYDs as well.
- 5:41I mean, not my choice, but in that kind of nail polish hue that makes
- 5:46that car, I must have that one for certain people, usually women.
- 5:52Young women, I'm not knocking them for it.
- 5:54You know, I'm just saying this is a niche, well designed, well considered product.
- 5:59So Nissan must be craking in their boots.
- 6:01And I guess they are because in this last couple of weeks, we had the
- 6:04announcement of the merger with Honda.
- 6:07And I did read one particular headline that was the CEO of Honda struggles
- 6:13to explain benefit of Nissan merger.
- 6:17And if you think of it from Honda's perspective, what exactly is the benefit?
- 6:20Well, I'm going to answer that question.
- 6:22I think it's size.
- 6:23I think it's not letting a fellow Japanese company fail, but I think
- 6:27it's size as well, that I think they recognize that Honda are too
- 6:31small to survive on their own.
- 6:33So, you know, they need the kind of economies of scale that Stellantis and
- 6:39Fiat and Citroen and Vauxhall have been, uh, have been trying to, to establish.
- 6:43But.
- 6:44My God, it's bleak for Stellantis, isn't it?
- 6:46But let's not drill on that.
- 6:48Let's, let's focus on, on where we were, um, in, in Mexico city there, because
- 6:53it was not just BYDs, it was MG as well.
- 6:57So MG2 appear to have a complete model range or if not a complete model range.
- 7:03They seem to be doing little sedans, little premium coupe sedans, and
- 7:10that sort of ubiquitous BMW X1 RAV4 kind of size, little, uh, little SUV.
- 7:18So we had a ride in, in a Mazda in an MG5 cab, and it was nice, you know,
- 7:25sort of, you know, I put in a Vauxhall or five year old Toyota kind of way.
- 7:31So not like compelling design or anything like that, but just a whole
- 7:35lot nicer than you were expecting you to thought this was a Suzuki or a five
- 7:39year old Toyota, not something that's a first generation offering from a, from
- 7:44a Chinese maker, this, so this MG4.
- 7:46For MG5 we were in, it was leatherish, it did nicely on the motorway.
- 7:53We drove on this like raised section of freeway across Mexico city.
- 7:58And it was, it was handy along there.
- 8:01Um, as I say, you know, you're not looking at them being like, this
- 8:04is the best design I've ever seen.
- 8:06But what you are saying is, is that you were just in the market for a nice car.
- 8:10If this was 20 percent less than anything else on the market,
- 8:13you would definitely buy it.
- 8:14That's what we're saying.
- 8:15It's the old Kia Skoda value proposition going on here.
- 8:20Cecil Kimber must be.
- 8:22Absolutely spinning in his grave.
- 8:25But who knows the notion of MGs being all over Mexico that
- 8:31might really appeal to him.
- 8:33Mightn't it?
- 8:33The notion that Morris is long forgotten, but MG survives across
- 8:39the world associated with these, this new dynamic, vibrant brand.
- 8:44But you say, doesn't an MG have to be a sports car?
- 8:48No, it has to be sporting.
- 8:50And I think anything electric is sporting to drive, isn't it?
- 8:54It's got Vim and Verve and all of that.
- 8:57Ah, but it has to be a two seater sports car.
- 8:59Yeah, a lot of MGs were, but magnets weren't.
- 9:03YBs, wasn't it?
- 9:04The YB that prewar looking sedan that they did that everyone
- 9:08said drove really, really well.
- 9:10Everyone of my dad's age said drove really well.
- 9:13Yeah, you know, I'm like, um, I'm not completely weirded out by MG and
- 9:20I was quite enjoying, you know, the thought of, of, of Cecil Kimber and,
- 9:25and his badge, his Oxycontin badge.
- 9:28Being, you know, high above Mexico city there as, as, uh, as
- 9:32a sports bikers weaved amongst us.
- 9:48So I put design panel fit interior fit and finish again, really good.
- 9:53It was for the BYD.
- 9:54I didn't talk about the BYD cab.
- 9:57It had one of these like suicide doors in, in, in the middle.
- 10:00So it's very easy to get in and out of the parts of the interior were
- 10:04white and they had discolored, but mostly it was holding up really well.
- 10:09It was like holding up like a Toyota would at 200, 000 miles, not like a
- 10:13Vauxhall would at 200, 000 miles or 200, 000 kilometers, which is what like 120,
- 10:19000 miles, 125, something like that.
- 10:22Either way it is, it looked used, but not tired.
- 10:24000 miles, not like 120 or 200, 000 kilometers.
- 10:30As, uh, as this guy was, uh, was wearing, there were some great West
- 10:34motors knocking around in Mexico city.
- 10:38Um, I didn't experience them sadly, but I just like saw them from, from afar.
- 10:44So, the cabs that I rode in were current generation Sentras, or what we get here
- 10:51as, uh, as Versas, not the, not the Nissan Note, the model up from that Nissan
- 10:57Versa, it's like a de contented version of probably what you get in Europe, but
- 11:01anyway, they were stick shift, um, also had, um, Um, a couple of cab rides in
- 11:07Chevy Sparks, or they do a like a facelift of the Chevy Spark or the Chevy Beat.
- 11:13Anyway, each of these things was a stick.
- 11:15Each of them was wearing more than 200, 000 kilometers, and they
- 11:19look way worse than the BYD did.
- 11:21They, they really look like they, they couldn't, they couldn't do it.
- 11:23They, they weren't able to wear it.
- 11:25The lower mile ones, uh, you, you know, there were a few, you know, clearly
- 11:29250 is pushing it 120 K's and, and the things feels not like a new car, but
- 11:36it feels not like the kind of car that.
- 11:39Would in no way in hell pass an MOT because of course that is the thing.
- 11:43It makes me laugh.
- 11:44I follow these YouTubers and they're like, Oh, you know, we feel more
- 11:48comfortable MOT in our cars, even though we don't legally have to do it.
- 11:52I'm like, you know, buddy Mexico, you're sitting in the cab coming
- 11:56from the airport and you're watching the car next to you on the freeway.
- 12:00And as the slowing down, the wheels just wobbling.
- 12:03backwards and forwards, because obviously the tie rod and the suspension
- 12:07and all those rubber components are just completely shot away.
- 12:10I mean, it's just, uh, yeah, you need to spend some time south of the border
- 12:14a little bit to really see how the, how the other side live when it comes
- 12:18to, uh, when it comes to beta cars.
- 12:21So I guess because I was like looking at the cars and because we'd ridden in the
- 12:24MG, I started looking more closely at the bikes that were scattered curbside there.
- 12:31So there's very few BMWs, there's a couple of them, and actually on our way
- 12:36out to the airport, right as we were leaving, we passed a big Triumph showroom.
- 12:41But that's not what's like today.
- 12:43Parked up lurking on the streets.
- 12:45Now I didn't really delve too closely into the mopeds.
- 12:48I'm not going to talk about the mopeds, but, but there are scads of them and scads
- 12:53of, uh, of EV ones and things as well.
- 12:56But I'm going to focus mostly on the motorcycles.
- 12:59Um, these were, these are mostly.
- 13:02Poxy sub 250 cc affairs, which is a bit tragic.
- 13:06You know, I have to say when I got back to my garage here in California, I like
- 13:11surveyed my like liter bikes here and was just like, so relieved I've been able to
- 13:17get ahold of these things whilst I can, because these bikes that we're looking at
- 13:22in Mexico, they have all the like fronting and maxing of a, of a sports bike.
- 13:27But, but really, you know, it's all in this sort of modern,
- 13:31faintly pathetic rapper, but, but kind of interesting anyway.
- 13:34Right.
- 13:34So pathetic in comparison to a 20 year old jigsaw, but nonetheless a
- 13:40motorcycle and, and kind of cool.
- 13:43So, so look like most of what they've got is knockoffs of Honda CG one, two fives.
- 13:49So this is like your basic one, two, five CC motorcycle.
- 13:53Like if you're in England, like the thing that you did, you CBT on.
- 13:56But these things, they have front drum brakes.
- 14:00A lot of them drum brakes at the front.
- 14:03I mean, I was just, and these, and some of these bikes, they're like brand new.
- 14:06They're still making these things.
- 14:08I can't remember the maker.
- 14:09One of the makers was this company Vento, who I'm going to talk about
- 14:13more, uh, more in, in, in just a moment.
- 14:16So Vento make them.
- 14:18Um, and it was actually Vento who I was looking at most closely because
- 14:21they do this, uh, Ducati brand.
- 14:24Rip off, um, which I think is called the ripper or the scorcher or something.
- 14:29And then they do, uh, uh, sort of a previous KTM super Duke kind of rip
- 14:35off little bite, but what it is, is instead of the CG one, two, five, this
- 14:39is like contented up, it looks better.
- 14:42It's got like drum breaks.
- 14:43It's got better tires.
- 14:45You know, you can tell this is a contented up bike, even if it might seem a bit.
- 14:50You know, poxy you might be used to as an American or, uh, or a European.
- 14:56So these guys, Vento, blew my mind, right?
- 14:59I wikied them up, based in San Diego, sell more motorcycles in Mexico last year
- 15:07than Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki.
- 15:11Put together, put together.
- 15:14So no wonder they were all over the place.
- 15:16Right.
- 15:16And you know, if you're living in Mexico city, I mean, the life expectancy
- 15:20on these bikes has got to be under five years before they've just got
- 15:24the bejesus kicked out of them.
- 15:26I mean, it's just, it's like motorcycles, Jim, but not as we know them.
- 15:31It's life, Jim, but as we know it, that was, was what I was, uh, was, was, was
- 15:36thinking anyway, this is other brands, CF moto, and they seem to do some rip off of
- 15:42the BMW GS at the same kind of like high mud guard and asymmetrical headlight.
- 15:49But it was all done on like a sort of, you know, two thirds scale.
- 15:52It was like a, uh, GS.
- 15:55Like for sort of play size then you look at it and you're like hang on
- 15:58a minute bloody potholes on this road You know, maybe you do need
- 16:02a knockoff adventure bike, right?
- 16:04I was cynical at first and then I was like, you know, well, maybe this is kind
- 16:07of cool Anyway, i'll let you be the judge.
- 16:09I took some pictures Or sub 250 or with these LCD displays,
- 16:15which is like weird to me.
- 16:16I mean, cause so few of my bikes have LCD displays, but I guess the youngest
- 16:21bike I have is like a 2005, isn't it?
- 16:24So, you know, it's so that's 20 years old now, isn't it?
- 16:27So I wrote here.
- 16:29If you've not looked at real examples, the copies seem to
- 16:33measure up and that's right.
- 16:35It's like, you look at this Vento Scorcher on the other side of
- 16:38the street and you think, well, that's a stylish little thing.
- 16:41It's only when you get a bit closer, you're like, oh yeah,
- 16:43it's a ripoff of a Ducati.
- 16:44That's why it looks like that or an Impredia, right?
- 16:47But that's why it has that like, oh, but you know, if you're not thinking
- 16:51that, if you're just like looking at in comparison to these CG 125s and, you
- 16:56know, no name mopeds, You know, EV mopeds.
- 17:00Yeah.
- 17:00You know, so yeah, so that was interesting.
- 17:02So what I should say, and I'll include a picture of this was outside the hotel.
- 17:06I did see a bike that was a Suzuki and it was badged as a Gixxer.
- 17:11Literally it was a Suzuki Gixxer.
- 17:14Not a GSX R250, but a Suzuki Gixxer.
- 17:19What an odd little piece it was.
- 17:22It made me all the more glad that I have the Gixxers here.
- 17:25It may have fed into the fact that I just wrote a letter
- 17:28home to my family, Chris Smith.
- 17:29I'm going to send it to them.
- 17:30Letter home to my family for 2024 and in it, I said, I'm not
- 17:33going to buy any more jigsaws.
- 17:35Then that very day I got stump tangled up in a auction and I've just bought a third
- 17:4089 1100, which I'm going to go and pick up in Santa Monica at the end of next week.
- 17:47It's an affliction, isn't it?
- 17:48It was only 1, 300 or something.
- 17:51I mean, scandalous.
- 17:52The bite's got to be worth at least three times that.
- 18:06This one's come from England.
- 18:08So we'll have to see if I can get hold of an English plate for it or something.
- 18:11So
- 18:23we're in that ride on the MG in the MG.
- 18:26Did see just one jigsaw.
- 18:28I said that there were sports bikes filtering past a bunch of guys
- 18:31on Italian bikes that was like, obviously out for a weekend ride.
- 18:35And one guy was on a sort of 05, 06, that kind of age, 750 red and black 750.
- 18:43It was the most desirable vehicle I saw in the time that I was in Mexico.
- 18:47Cause there were more valuable cars there, but that was the only thing I
- 18:51looked at and thought, Ooh, I want that.
- 18:53Makes you realize how lucky you are in California, really.
- 19:11What I wrote was, I'm more bemused than horror stricken.
- 19:16I mean, we knew it was coming, right?
- 19:17But I'm bemused by the speed of this Chinese invasion.
- 19:21I think the motorcycle show and indeed what happened to the
- 19:24British motorcycle industry shows how devastating it's going to be.
- 19:28These Volkswagen layoffs, they're just the beginning.
- 19:31You know, is there going to be a Renault?
- 19:33Is there going to be a Nissan?
- 19:35Is there going to be a Volkswagen, you know, in the year 2035, there's
- 19:40going to have to be a lot of upping competitiveness if we're to take on.
- 19:46Because it's not just BYD, right?
- 19:48It's also guys like Vento.
- 19:50Who were rebadging, they're a domestic maker.
- 19:53That's an American maker with American sales and marketing.
- 19:57Those people who design those bikes, they know what an Aprilia Tuono looks like.
- 20:01They know what's cool about a KTM Duke.
- 20:04You know, they know that I could see that.
- 20:07That's why it's worth doing this pod and talking about it.
- 20:09But the BYDs in some ways, they were more terrifying than the Ventos
- 20:14because it's good design and they can clearly wear the mileage like that.
- 20:19Cab that had 200, 000 kilometers on it.
- 20:21I mean, that was like, wow, like, no wonder Nissan are terrified.
- 20:28No wonder, um, as a sales manager of mine used to say, panic well,
- 20:32panic early and panic well.
- 20:34And I feel like that's perhaps what, what Nissan are trying to do.
- 20:39So yeah, should I be horror stricken?
- 20:41No, cause it's been coming for a long time.
- 20:44You know, am I sad if BMW go bust?
- 20:46Well, yeah, but are they really making anything that I really love now?
- 20:51You know, not in comparison to what they were making 25 years ago.
- 20:54I mean, just stop and think about what they were making even in 2010, you know,
- 20:59when they had the cojones to be making a sedan with a formula one inspired.
- 21:04V10 that revved to nine grand.
- 21:07I mean, that was what they used to be doing.
- 21:09And now, you know, I, I, I don't know.
- 21:12I, I, uh, you know, that Neue Klasse that I learned about recently, that
- 21:16BMW dynamic lighting design that I, I learned about just recently.
- 21:21You know, there's definitely still good ideas, but I don't know, maybe the whole.
- 21:26ethos of car design at the moment is less interesting than it used to be.
- 21:31Maybe the whole fact that people are focused on the screen and
- 21:35it grows out of the screen.
- 21:36I, I, I don't know.
- 21:37I mean, you know, I find myself saying, talking about these EVs, they all seem
- 21:41to kind of drive pretty similarly.
- 21:43And, you know, so I, I'm not sure.
- 21:45Maybe that's why I'm more bemused rather than horror stricken at it.
- 21:49Maybe the.
- 21:50Maybe my horrors expressed itself in the purchase of yet another GSX R,
- 21:54which I really don't need, but probably won't be able to bring myself to
- 21:58sell after I've spent loads of money putting tires and chains and all the
- 22:02other shit that it needs onto it.
- 22:18So let's conclude that the bikes, whatever, it's a totally different
- 22:21market from Europe and the US.
- 22:23So, you know.
- 22:23India has their Bajaj, you know, Mexico has their CG125 knockoffs with drum
- 22:30brakes, you know, it's fine, isn't it?
- 22:32We've got our Gixxers and, you know, you can still buy a Velocette KTT
- 22:37in the auctions if you want to.
- 22:39So no harm, no foul.
- 22:40The bikes.
- 22:42But the cars, the full model ranges, the fact that they're not
- 22:46just coming, you know, it's not just bloody Lada with one model.
- 22:50No, they've like got, and it's not just, you know, the Riva with the big grill
- 22:55and the, no, they've done the SUV and the small and the large and the hybrid and
- 23:00their pure EV, you know, they are coming.
- 23:02With an, and it's not just BYD, it's, it's MG, it's great war motors.
- 23:10This other brand that I forget the name of that we saw when we
- 23:13were down in Puerto Vallarta.
- 23:14So it's many players and, and I just wonder what the second generation
- 23:21players are going to look like.
- 23:22And what I mean by that is that the car that took us to the airport.
- 23:26And when we were leaving Puerto Vallarta was some Chinese brand
- 23:30that I'd never heard of before.
- 23:33It was like on my wife's Uber and she was like, it's a whatever.
- 23:35And I was like, what's that?
- 23:37She went, it's red.
- 23:38And I was looking and I was like, is it a Nissan Sentra?
- 23:40And she went, no, but the number plate was right.
- 23:42Well, it turns out it was some rebranded Nissan Sentra.
- 23:46It looked like a Nissan Sentra, but it wasn't batched as a Nissan Sentra.
- 23:50So that's right.
- 23:51They are these.
- 23:53Chinese, the, the, the Chinese products that are coming are in
- 23:58all shapes and flavors, and they're going to meet all market points.
- 24:04It's Teimu taking on Amazon.
- 24:07Ooh, it's a thing, guys, and it's coming very soon.
- 24:11So what's that going to look like in a decade?
- 24:13Well, I mean, I'm, I'm brooding on it.
- 24:16I'm reminded of, of those Chevy Corollas, those Toyota Corollas that
- 24:24were rebadged as Chevys in the 1990s.
- 24:27Or you might remember the Mitsubishi Mighty Maxis that were
- 24:32repackaged as like Dodge Ram 50s.
- 24:36You know, so in order to get access to the domestic market, the Japanese
- 24:41allowed their products to be rebranded and sold by the domestic makers.
- 24:46And that's what I think we're likely to see happening.
- 24:48In other words, are BYD going to come here as BYD?
- 24:52Yeah, but they're also going to come here as BYD.
- 24:55BYD, but we're in a Chrysler badge, so they sell better in domestic makers and
- 25:00Chrysler are going to be happy to take 10 percent of margin or whatever it is.
- 25:05They can make just in the hope that they can survive.
- 25:08I think that's, what's going to look like in, in the years to come.
- 25:12On that rather depressing note.
- 25:14Thank you.
- 25:14Drive through.
