- 1:15Speaker 2: I'm doing well, Jeff. Congraduation on thirteen years.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Man, that's awesome.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I hope I'm still kicking in about thirteen years doing
- 1:21Speaker 2: this stuff, So I own much appreciation to you on
- 1:25Speaker 2: that street. And I didn't even notice until we got
- 1:27Speaker 2: on man that actually I'm wear in a Phillies sweatshirts.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I don't know if it was fate or not. It
- 1:31Speaker 2: was not designed.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Oh I noticed, my friend, I absolutely noticed that. I
- 1:34Speaker 1: was gonna mention it right off the bat. I'm glad
- 1:36Speaker 1: that you did rightfully, so coming on a PST podcast
- 1:40Speaker 1: show here, a Philly sports podcast show, wearing some awesome
- 1:44Speaker 1: Phillies gear, I appreciate that.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But I also, man, I appreciate what you and again
- 1:51Speaker 1: your co host Joe dal Leone have been talking about
- 1:53Speaker 1: on your pod and just the overall analysis that you've
- 1:56Speaker 1: all been doing over at eight of is E Sports
- 1:58Speaker 1: with regard to the NFL. So to get this conversation started,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I actually want to go back a couple days ago
- 2:05Speaker 1: about something you tweeted out and I was gonna ask
- 2:08Speaker 1: you about this, Ryan, because I saw your tweet. I've
- 2:12Speaker 1: been thinking about this and I knew we had to
- 2:14Speaker 1: start off the conversation about this. That tweet was quote
- 2:18Speaker 1: your yearly reminder that testing numbers don't matter if they
- 2:22Speaker 1: don't show up on film. And honestly, I think a
- 2:26Speaker 1: lot of folks who follow the NFL Draft and a
- 2:28Speaker 1: lot of these prospects, folks just still don't understand that
- 2:32Speaker 1: concept after all these years, some folks will look at
- 2:36Speaker 1: the numbers and say, oh, man, this guy tested so well.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I mean he's got to be drafted high, not necessarily,
- 2:41Speaker 1: So can you talk about this in more details so
- 2:44Speaker 1: folks can understand that film really does matter so much
- 2:48Speaker 1: during the draft evaluation process, and at times I think
- 2:52Speaker 1: it might actually matter more than the actual testing numbers.
- 2:54Speaker 3: So get us started here, buddy.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Well, it's your process as an evaluator, and people have
- 3:01Speaker 2: different processes. Some people are very data driven, some people
- 3:04Speaker 2: are film based. Some people are a mixture of the two. Yeah,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I like to and I always am fully candid on this.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I'm a film guy that uses information outside to be
- 3:15Speaker 2: able to verify my opinions on things or to make
- 3:18Speaker 2: me go back and cross check things.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 3:20Speaker 2: So, for an instance of a testing number, like let's
- 3:23Speaker 2: say a forty yard dash time, I'm gonna use like
- 3:25Speaker 2: a wide receiver that I think is a speed store
- 3:27Speaker 2: on film. I think, as you know, great qualities is
- 3:29Speaker 2: a deep threat potential on the next level if they
- 3:33Speaker 2: go to the combine of their protain and they run fast. Well,
- 3:36Speaker 2: I'm I'm not bumping a grade or anything that just
- 3:38Speaker 2: verifies what I saw on film. It's like, yes, that
- 3:40Speaker 2: was it, right, that's another checking of the box. We're
- 3:43Speaker 2: good there, right. Like some people and I actually don't
- 3:46Speaker 2: have anything against this, but this is in my process.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Some people like weight grades in terms of like they
- 3:50Speaker 2: get bumps for like athletic testing. I don't personally do
- 3:53Speaker 2: that because again, in my opinion, if I already great
- 3:56Speaker 2: at the player for being fast, I'm not going to
- 3:57Speaker 2: count that twice like he's fasked good checkpoint. But the
- 4:01Speaker 2: other problem that happens is that if you great a
- 4:04Speaker 2: guy and let's say you think he's a four to
- 4:05Speaker 2: three athlete, and then he goes to the combine of
- 4:07Speaker 2: the protae runs four or five flat, you're like, man,
- 4:08Speaker 2: that doesn't check out what I saw on film. So
- 4:11Speaker 2: that's where and I was a teacher in a former life,
- 4:14Speaker 2: that's where like you need to go check your work, right,
- 4:16Speaker 2: like you need to go back to the drawing boards
- 4:18Speaker 2: and make sure that you saw what you think you
- 4:21Speaker 2: saw on film. And there's some guys, and this is
- 4:23Speaker 2: from a historical perspective, some guys are bad testers. Some
- 4:27Speaker 2: guys are great testers. And sometimes that's what I honestly
- 4:30Speaker 2: does that matter.
- 4:31Speaker 1: That is absolutely what I was hoping that you would say,
- 4:34Speaker 1: because it happens, you know, it just happens in this
- 4:37Speaker 1: world in general, whether seriously, whether it's academia or whether
- 4:40Speaker 1: it's in the sports world. Some people just don't test
- 4:42Speaker 1: very well, but when you put them in a particular
- 4:44Speaker 1: life situation, they're going to excel.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I think that's an important aspect of this.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Well, when I was when I was a teacher, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: not to go like too far off off the beaten
- 4:53Speaker 2: path here, but like when I was a teacher, you
- 4:55Speaker 2: quickly found out that people learn in different ways, and
- 4:59Speaker 2: they also are able to articulate their ideas in much
- 5:02Speaker 2: different ways as well. Like some people you could sit
- 5:04Speaker 2: down some students, you could sit down and say, tell
- 5:07Speaker 2: me what you're seeing on this problem and explain your process,
- 5:11Speaker 2: and they can explain it, but they can't practically sit
- 5:13Speaker 2: down and do it. Like they're just not visual people
- 5:16Speaker 2: or they're not just they're not the people that are
- 5:18Speaker 2: just gonna be able to create a problems and solve
- 5:21Speaker 2: it from step one to step six, but they understand
- 5:24Speaker 2: what they're trying to do, right, So all those things
- 5:26Speaker 2: are kind of correlated to the process because ultimately, and
- 5:31Speaker 2: it was actually a conversation I was having with Joe
- 5:33Speaker 2: on the podcast that kind of got me start on
- 5:35Speaker 2: this because I had seen in the universe, like this
- 5:38Speaker 2: particular offensive guard. Not gonna throw his name out there
- 5:40Speaker 2: because I don't want to disparage the guy at all, Right,
- 5:42Speaker 2: but everyone's talking about him being a great athlete and
- 5:45Speaker 2: moving really well laterally because he tested well, like his
- 5:48Speaker 2: explosiveness stuff was off the charts, but when you watch
- 5:51Speaker 2: the film, it's not there, Like, it's just not there.
- 5:54Speaker 2: He is a little bit of a slower plotter. Some
- 5:56Speaker 2: guys again just test really well, but it's not practical
- 6:01Speaker 2: to their game as an NFL athlete, and they can't
- 6:03Speaker 2: do it when the bullets are firing more than anything, right,
- 6:06Speaker 2: So they don't have reactionary skills. They don't have those
- 6:08Speaker 2: things to be able to tangibly create it on the field.
- 6:11Speaker 2: So at the end of the day, there's always exceptions
- 6:14Speaker 2: to every rule. But the rule for me has always
- 6:16Speaker 2: been first and foremost, is it on film. If it's
- 6:20Speaker 2: not on film, it probably will never be on film.
- 6:23Speaker 2: If it is on film in little instances, then maybe
- 6:26Speaker 2: there's some things that are stopping it from being a
- 6:28Speaker 2: play to play two to play three from a play
- 6:31Speaker 2: to play sequencing perspective. But regardless, if you don't see
- 6:34Speaker 2: it on film at all, it's probably not there. So
- 6:36Speaker 2: I really don't care about what the testing says in
- 6:38Speaker 2: that type of scenario.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Yeah, look, film is so important, folks, and you know,
- 6:42Speaker 1: Ryan just really drove that home with us here. And
- 6:45Speaker 1: i'd also like to as we're continuing on with this
- 6:48Speaker 1: evaluation process here, and I'd like to get into the
- 6:51Speaker 1: scouting aspects more as we were just talking about the
- 6:54Speaker 1: film versus testing numbers, and I'd love to know how
- 6:58Speaker 1: much weight the interview and personality evaluations actually carry with
- 7:04Speaker 1: these prospects. You know, when coaches and scouts have seen
- 7:07Speaker 1: the film and they know what the analytics are, I
- 7:11Speaker 1: wonder how high up a team's draft board or how
- 7:15Speaker 1: low a player can rise or fall based on the
- 7:17Speaker 1: interviews and personality evaluation. So that's another part of the
- 7:21Speaker 1: scouting process. What are your thoughts here?
- 7:24Speaker 2: It's becoming even more important than maybe it even once was,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and it's always been important, but now that we have
- 7:29Speaker 2: like the GPS tracking stuff where we cannot do a
- 7:32Speaker 2: lot of the testing before guys even test, and a
- 7:35Speaker 2: lot of the background of the strength conditioning and talking
- 7:38Speaker 2: about that type of stuff. It's easier to project an
- 7:41Speaker 2: athlete to whether they can stick on the NFL level
- 7:45Speaker 2: or stick on the professional level. In general, it's harder
- 7:48Speaker 2: to predict a person right, like it is much harder.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Because that's the one thing and that's why I always
- 7:52Speaker 2: push back on the data people to a degree, is
- 7:56Speaker 2: that we are still greating human beings, right and we
- 7:59Speaker 2: need as much if on these humans as possible because
- 8:02Speaker 2: as we know, there are some people that make great
- 8:04Speaker 2: decisions both on and off the field. There are some
- 8:06Speaker 2: that make great decisions on the field and not off
- 8:08Speaker 2: the field, and those people that don't do well on either.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Like that just is the world we live in. So
- 8:13Speaker 2: these players, I mean, first and foremost, they're gonna go
- 8:16Speaker 2: to the combine or they're gonna go on the thirty visit.
- 8:19Speaker 2: They're gonna go, and the medical stabs are gonna poke
- 8:23Speaker 2: and prod these players to understand not only short term
- 8:26Speaker 2: but long term, is this a player that can even
- 8:28Speaker 2: get to a second contract. That's why you always hear
- 8:30Speaker 2: like those medical red flags on some of these players
- 8:32Speaker 2: that you just don't can't project long term to being
- 8:34Speaker 2: an asset to your team, like you just don't know
- 8:36Speaker 2: if their body's gonna hold up. But then the other side,
- 8:39Speaker 2: and probably the more important side, and unfortunately I know
- 8:41Speaker 2: that James Pierce Junior thing is still ongoing. And you know,
- 8:44Speaker 2: you don't want to be definitive while a process is going,
- 8:47Speaker 2: especially when legality is a part of the conversation. But
- 8:50Speaker 2: when a player has some character red flags, that is
- 8:55Speaker 2: a telltale sign that you need to do as much
- 8:57Speaker 2: deep dive into that player as possible. Because these scoutings
- 9:00Speaker 2: are not only talking about this one to one and
- 9:02Speaker 2: getting as much information as possible from these campus visits
- 9:05Speaker 2: and talking at people on the road and all this
- 9:07Speaker 2: type of stuff. I mean a lot of these teams,
- 9:09Speaker 2: I would say most of the teams, at least some
- 9:11Speaker 2: teams I've talked to in this process, they have like
- 9:14Speaker 2: private investigators. They're just doing as much dirt and try
- 9:17Speaker 2: and find as much information on these players as possible.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Because Jeffley, I think I think we lose sight of
- 9:22Speaker 2: this sometimes.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Man.
- 9:23Speaker 2: The NFL is a business. We know that, but you
- 9:25Speaker 2: also need to understand that they're investing millions of dollars
- 9:28Speaker 2: into these players, man, Like, I don't blame them for
- 9:31Speaker 2: wanting as much information as possible. Yeah, and knowing if
- 9:33Speaker 2: this person has a good body, where they're going to
- 9:36Speaker 2: be able to be a long term asset. And two
- 9:39Speaker 2: are they going to be a positive member of this team?
- 9:41Speaker 2: Do they have those character red flags? Do they have
- 9:44Speaker 2: leadership hang ups? Like all these things kind of do
- 9:47Speaker 2: really bake into this conversation. So to answer your point
- 9:50Speaker 2: as much as I can, it is a pivotal part,
- 9:53Speaker 2: I would say personally, if like or dividing this up
- 9:55Speaker 2: into a pie, the eye in the sky is number one.
- 9:57Speaker 2: We talked about that already the film, I would say,
- 9:59Speaker 2: though even more than athletic testing or what they did
- 10:02Speaker 2: at either the Senior Bowl or the Shrine or whatever,
- 10:05Speaker 2: that character is the second biggest part of that pie. Man.
- 10:08Speaker 2: You need to make sure that you're investing into a
- 10:09Speaker 2: good person and a good leader to be a part
- 10:11Speaker 2: and be an asset free organization.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Absolutely, And look, there are gonna be some guys in
- 10:15Speaker 1: this NFL draft, in the twenty twenty six NFL Draft
- 10:19Speaker 1: that are gonna work out for some teams, not work
- 10:21Speaker 1: out for some teams, whether it's because of physical health,
- 10:23Speaker 1: whether it's because of mental health, and overall it's just
- 10:26Speaker 1: gonna be, I think, a pretty fascinating draft in general.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So let's get into that. And it's going to a
- 10:31Speaker 1: two part question here for you, because you know a
- 10:34Speaker 1: lot of us that want to dive into the NFL
- 10:36Speaker 1: Draft and have been now for.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Several several weeks.
- 10:39Speaker 1: We're looking at certain players and we see certain film
- 10:42Speaker 1: and we say, you know what, this guy may be
- 10:44Speaker 1: a little overrated. This guy may be a little underrated
- 10:48Speaker 1: in terms of the particular position that they're at. So
- 10:51Speaker 1: start us off here. I mean, you've been watching a
- 10:53Speaker 1: lot of film again, been watching you and you're co
- 10:55Speaker 1: host Joe de Leone on your podcast talking about certain
- 10:59Speaker 1: towns by position. Let's start off with who you believe
- 11:03Speaker 1: might actually be one of the most overrated first round
- 11:07Speaker 1: talents in this draft? And could it be because of
- 11:09Speaker 1: what we you know, have been talking about already. What
- 11:12Speaker 1: are your thoughts here?
- 11:14Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's been the same guy for me
- 11:16Speaker 2: on this question pretty consistently. I think there's a couple
- 11:18Speaker 2: other that do kind of fit this label as well,
- 11:21Speaker 2: but it's Caden Proctor from Alabama graphicsive tackle, and it
- 11:25Speaker 2: just has been I I have And this happens every year, Jeff, Like,
- 11:29Speaker 2: there's players that we know are going to go higher
- 11:31Speaker 2: than where we have them graded, and we go back
- 11:34Speaker 2: and we watch them again. And Caden Proctor is a
- 11:36Speaker 2: very interesting situation where I have gone back to watch
- 11:39Speaker 2: him twice outside of my initial view, and so I've
- 11:42Speaker 2: watched him three different times, four plus games apiece, and
- 11:46Speaker 2: at this point I probably have watched just about every
- 11:48Speaker 2: one of his games outside of like the lower level
- 11:50Speaker 2: competition this past year because I just don't get it. Yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 2: I just don't. I mean, I understand the fascination first,
- 11:59Speaker 2: Like from the first jump point, he is almost six
- 12:01Speaker 2: foot seven, he's three undred and fifty one pounds, he's
- 12:03Speaker 2: a very explosive athlete. Like those things are cool, right,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and they're unteachables and they matter absolutely. But when we're
- 12:10Speaker 2: talking about an offensive tackle in the NFL level, there
- 12:12Speaker 2: are a couple of things that are paramount for me
- 12:14Speaker 2: as an evaluator, and one of them, a big one
- 12:17Speaker 2: is flexibility. And part of the flexibility is not only
- 12:19Speaker 2: being able to bend, but it's being able to have
- 12:22Speaker 2: the body contortion to be able to change direction and
- 12:26Speaker 2: to match inside counters and just to just generally recover
- 12:30Speaker 2: as an athlete. And I just don't see it with
- 12:32Speaker 2: Caden Procter. Man, Like, when he has his outside shoulder threatens,
- 12:37Speaker 2: he has a very tough time being able to recover
- 12:39Speaker 2: and to protect his inside shoulder to be able to
- 12:41Speaker 2: redirect in space. I think a team's going to draft
- 12:44Speaker 2: him to be an offensive tackle, and I have a
- 12:47Speaker 2: lot of hesitation for me. He is very much Mackay
- 12:50Speaker 2: Beckton ish right where it's like, yeah, Mackai ended up
- 12:54Speaker 2: being a real good player for the Eagles one year
- 12:55Speaker 2: as a guard. Yeah, because you cut down on the
- 12:57Speaker 2: space and you let him be a monster, right, Like,
- 13:00Speaker 2: let him just be physical. That is what I think
- 13:03Speaker 2: Caden Proctor can do on the next level. But unfortunately
- 13:07Speaker 2: in this is the world we live in, and I
- 13:08Speaker 2: think that I think it would have been Todd mcshade
- 13:10Speaker 2: that may have said it on his show, and I
- 13:13Speaker 2: had went back and talked to some people around the
- 13:14Speaker 2: league that I know just to like verify things, because
- 13:16Speaker 2: like you never take things word for word for people
- 13:18Speaker 2: in terms of like there's always context, right, and there's
- 13:22Speaker 2: always you want to do your own homework in those situations.
- 13:25Speaker 2: But Todd it basically said, like there is some heats
- 13:28Speaker 2: to a Caden Proctor being in the top ten in
- 13:31Speaker 2: this draft in Cleveland. Browns at six is like one
- 13:33Speaker 2: that he's heard, and I did my digging on it,
- 13:36Speaker 2: and I think that there is some validity. So what
- 13:38Speaker 2: Todd McShay said in terms of I think that most
- 13:40Speaker 2: people have been mocking this young man in the late
- 13:43Speaker 2: twenties to early thirties, and I think there's a possibility
- 13:46Speaker 2: he's going to go top fifteen, if not top ten,
- 13:49Speaker 2: And in that reality, we are just we are projecting
- 13:52Speaker 2: way too much. And this is this is one of
- 13:54Speaker 2: the folds of evaluation. I knew that Caden Proctor was
- 13:57Speaker 2: going to be one of these guys even before Todd
- 13:59Speaker 2: McShay did it, because there are checkpoints that people look
- 14:02Speaker 2: at and they over emphasize. He is a three year starter,
- 14:05Speaker 2: that is six seven, three point fifty one, it was
- 14:07Speaker 2: a former five star recruit. Those things together make guys
- 14:11Speaker 2: be over over value on the NFL level, and we're
- 14:15Speaker 2: we're looking past the flaws that are on film and
- 14:18Speaker 2: we're looking at him and saying well, he's a five
- 14:20Speaker 2: star for a reason. Well, he was a three year
- 14:21Speaker 2: star Alabama for a reason. Well, all these things right,
- 14:24Speaker 2: and there is again a world where I think he
- 14:26Speaker 2: becomes a good player a la a McKai Beckton. But
- 14:29Speaker 2: there's also a situation that we think we're gonna put
- 14:32Speaker 2: him in where we're all gonna look back and say, man,
- 14:35Speaker 2: that was on film in Alabama, those flaws and we
- 14:37Speaker 2: chose to ignore it for X Y or Z reason
- 14:39Speaker 2: some of us.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Anyway, it's gonna be interesting to see where he falls
- 14:42Speaker 1: for sure. And folks, we are gonna take a break here,
- 14:45Speaker 1: but when we get back, we've got more draft talk
- 14:47Speaker 1: and we're gonna get into a Ryan's underrated underrated first
- 14:52Speaker 1: round pick as well.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Stick with us. We're gonna be back in just a bit.
- 14:58Speaker 1: All right, We're back with our good b Ryan Roberts
- 15:01Speaker 1: from A to Z Sports. Check out all their workover
- 15:04Speaker 1: at eight es sports dot com and also best pod
- 15:07Speaker 1: available NFL Draft podcast. Uh let let's let's keep with
- 15:12Speaker 1: the conversation in terms of underrated draft prospects. The most
- 15:16Speaker 1: underrated draft prospect you think in the first round we
- 15:19Speaker 1: did overrated rate before the break who's the underrated guy?
- 15:22Speaker 1: Do you think of the first round here?
- 15:25Speaker 2: If it's okay, I would like to mention two guys
- 15:27Speaker 2: who are absolutely conversed. Yeah, absolutely, because I think one
- 15:31Speaker 2: is just strictly based upon what I think he is.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I think he's gonna go a little later, and I
- 15:35Speaker 2: understand why he's gonna go a little bit later, But
- 15:37Speaker 2: that's Shrmad McCoy from Tennessee, the talented cornerback. He's gone
- 15:41Speaker 2: through a lot over the last year. He got hurt
- 15:43Speaker 2: last spring towards acl miss the entire twenty twenty five season,
- 15:47Speaker 2: chose not to work out at the Combine. So a
- 15:49Speaker 2: lot of people have just been like, hey, man, we
- 15:51Speaker 2: know that on the field in twenty twenty four Tennessee
- 15:54Speaker 2: you were elites. Yeah, you were a tremendous, tremendous player,
- 15:57Speaker 2: but we just haven't seen you right, and like availability matter.
- 16:00Speaker 2: But then he goes to the Pro day and he
- 16:02Speaker 2: runs like I think it was between four three seven
- 16:05Speaker 2: and four three to nine. Most teams had him, Matt
- 16:07Speaker 2: and he had thirty eight inch vert and he had
- 16:08Speaker 2: ten to seven broad and you look good in the
- 16:10Speaker 2: position drills. And I think that even though he had
- 16:13Speaker 2: that great showing, there's still gonna be some teams that
- 16:15Speaker 2: are a little bit hesitant just because we haven't seen
- 16:18Speaker 2: him on a football field and over a year at
- 16:20Speaker 2: this point, so some people are gonna be very hesitant
- 16:22Speaker 2: on that. So a team I think is gonna get
- 16:24Speaker 2: him between like pick twelve and pick twenty, probably somewhere
- 16:29Speaker 2: in that ballpark. And I personally think he's a top
- 16:31Speaker 2: five player in this class when he's healthy, Like I
- 16:33Speaker 2: just do so value. I think you're gonna find value there.
- 16:37Speaker 2: The other guy that I think, I'm not certain is
- 16:39Speaker 2: a first round pick, but I think he could end
- 16:41Speaker 2: up being a first round pick, which is why I
- 16:42Speaker 2: wanted to mention the second guy here. But Chris Johnson
- 16:45Speaker 2: from San Diego State, who's another corner. I have now
- 16:49Speaker 2: gone through this process and I am at the point
- 16:51Speaker 2: where I'm just like, why isn't Chris Johnson a consensus
- 16:54Speaker 2: first round pick?
- 16:55Speaker 3: Like what?
- 16:55Speaker 2: And he's like in the thirties on the consensus board,
- 16:58Speaker 2: which makes to account all the media, so like he's
- 17:00Speaker 2: well liked.
- 17:01Speaker 3: But do you think it is? Yes, it is?
- 17:04Speaker 2: Well, I think one it's the G five label that's
- 17:07Speaker 2: on him.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:07Speaker 2: He went to San Diego State. So like Kenny Rise
- 17:09Speaker 2: the occasion, but when I'm looking at him, I say,
- 17:12Speaker 2: you went to the Senior Bowl. You looked like you belonged.
- 17:15Speaker 2: You went to the combine, you ran four to four flat,
- 17:17Speaker 2: you jumped like thirty nine inches or whatever it was.
- 17:20Speaker 2: You tested exceptionally well, you had multi years of really
- 17:23Speaker 2: good film and the twenty twenty five film was phenomenal
- 17:25Speaker 2: at San Diego State. And you actually had a couple
- 17:27Speaker 2: of your best games against the better competition that you
- 17:29Speaker 2: played at San Diego State. So he has continued as
- 17:31Speaker 2: Chuck Boxes and the thing that sold me on him most,
- 17:35Speaker 2: and we talked about the character and the football IQ
- 17:38Speaker 2: and the personality all that type of stuff he is in.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I think I've been the six or seven combines at
- 17:45Speaker 2: this point, and I didn't mean to do the six
- 17:47Speaker 2: sixty seventh thing. I'm sorry. I didn't actually didn't need
- 17:49Speaker 2: to do that on this podcast.
- 17:50Speaker 3: But all right, I've been tired with it over the
- 17:53Speaker 3: past year.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Yes, I know you have kids, so like you get it. Yeah,
- 17:58Speaker 2: I have kids too, and yes they overuse it very much. Yes,
- 18:02Speaker 2: but so I've been I've been to quite a few
- 18:03Speaker 2: comments at this point, and I would say that I
- 18:06Speaker 2: don't think I've ever been as impressed by a young
- 18:09Speaker 2: man interviewing in my time there. I just don't think
- 18:12Speaker 2: I have. And I've done hundreds of like one off
- 18:16Speaker 2: interviews on YouTube channels in the past two right, So,
- 18:19Speaker 2: like such an articulate dude and so well spoken, and
- 18:23Speaker 2: how he was able to explain his identification on the
- 18:28Speaker 2: back ends and his responsibilities and how his recognition changes
- 18:32Speaker 2: throughout depending on what is I see and everything. I
- 18:35Speaker 2: was so impressed. And then I went back and luckily
- 18:37Speaker 2: I do have some people that I know around the
- 18:38Speaker 2: san Ustate program, and I asked them, like, tell me
- 18:41Speaker 2: about Chris Johnson, like just please tell me about him,
- 18:43Speaker 2: And they did not say a single bad word about him,
- 18:45Speaker 2: like just sung his praises. And then I talked to
- 18:48Speaker 2: a couple of scouts that I know around the NFL,
- 18:49Speaker 2: and I'm like, hey, character report on this kid. What
- 18:51Speaker 2: you got one of the cleanest character reports ever, Like
- 18:55Speaker 2: just great kid, gives back to the community, loves ball
- 18:59Speaker 2: like all these So I'm again looking at great film,
- 19:03Speaker 2: great athletes, really well spoken, great character. I think this
- 19:07Speaker 2: kid's gonna go in the first round, Like I just do.
- 19:09Speaker 2: And I think that some people are gonna watch him
- 19:11Speaker 2: go in the first round. They're gonna be like, oh
- 19:13Speaker 2: my god, a corner from San Diego State. Yeah, and
- 19:15Speaker 2: we're gonna forget that. Just a couple of years ago,
- 19:17Speaker 2: we got a corner from Toledo who's been an All pro.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Like that doesn't matter anymore, man, Like it just doesn't
- 19:22Speaker 2: matter exactly.
- 19:23Speaker 3: And we're gonna have another.
- 19:24Speaker 2: We're gonna have another Toledo, Toledo defensive back in the
- 19:27Speaker 2: first round, most likely in this test too, So like
- 19:29Speaker 2: it just it just doesn't matter. So Chris Johnson, I
- 19:32Speaker 2: think I mocked into the Dallas Cowboys that picked twenty
- 19:35Speaker 2: the other day.
- 19:35Speaker 3: And I don't I don't.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Feel I know, I'm sorry, man, but I jev I
- 19:40Speaker 2: did it though, and I didn't feel dirty, you know,
- 19:42Speaker 2: like I didn't feel like I was doing it just
- 19:43Speaker 2: to create a conversation. Like I was like, you know what,
- 19:46Speaker 2: and we haven't done our cornerback show on best spot available.
- 19:48Speaker 2: But Chris Johnson is gonna be my CB three in
- 19:50Speaker 2: this class. Like he is right after McCoy, right after Delane.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Chris Johnson is the guy. So yeah, I love Chris Johnson,
- 19:56Speaker 2: San Diego State. He's one of my favorite players that
- 19:57Speaker 2: I've ever evaluated, to be honest.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah, Look, the Philadelphia Eagles. You know we're a Philadelphia
- 20:03Speaker 1: sports podcast. You know, the Philadelphia Eagles are gonna need,
- 20:05Speaker 1: I believe, some help on the defensive side of the
- 20:07Speaker 1: ball in terms of developing young talent over the course
- 20:10Speaker 1: of these next few years.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Chris Johnson, I would love it if the Eagles would
- 20:14Speaker 3: take him.
- 20:16Speaker 1: In their twenty what is twenty three to twenty four.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I'm forgetting me twenty three, yeah, three, And look, I
- 20:22Speaker 1: would love it if they could get Chris Johnson. But
- 20:24Speaker 1: I also think when it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and I know there are a lot of other NFL
- 20:28Speaker 1: teams as well that need to have some depth on
- 20:30Speaker 1: the defensive line. Look, I love a guy like Caden MacDonald.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I mean, he is one of the best run defenders
- 20:37Speaker 1: in this class. And if he's there, yeah, I think
- 20:40Speaker 1: the Eagles should absolutely draft him as well. There's a
- 20:42Speaker 1: lot of good defensive talent. I think that the Philadelphia
- 20:45Speaker 1: Eagles in general can take other teams as well right
- 20:48Speaker 1: around that you know, twenty's late twenty as picks as well.
- 20:53Speaker 1: What are your thoughts, Ryan on the top defensive tackles
- 20:56Speaker 1: in this draft class this year and how would you
- 20:58Speaker 1: assess the tackles in the class overall.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I think if you need a pure nose tackle type,
- 21:06Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of value in this class.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And he just mentioned Katie McDonald's he is the best
- 21:10Speaker 2: nose tackle in this class. The guy that could you're
- 21:12Speaker 2: just gonna line up, you know, zero or a shade
- 21:14Speaker 2: or a one. You're just gonna tell him to beat
- 21:16Speaker 2: the you know what out of in front of him,
- 21:17Speaker 2: Like that's just what he does. And there's a lot
- 21:19Speaker 2: of those guys man like Lee Hunter out of Texas Tech,
- 21:22Speaker 2: you're gonna go down to like late day two, day three,
- 21:25Speaker 2: to Dante Corleone out of Cincinnati, Chris McClellan out of Missouri. Like,
- 21:29Speaker 2: there's a lot of those nose tackle types in this
- 21:31Speaker 2: class where you're just like value from round one to
- 21:34Speaker 2: round four because nose tackles do sometimes fall a little bit,
- 21:38Speaker 2: especially if they don't have a ton of pass rush
- 21:40Speaker 2: up side.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So, but in the twenty twenty sixth group, if you
- 21:42Speaker 2: need a nose a guy that's just gonna be a
- 21:44Speaker 2: brute and do a lot of the dirty work. There's
- 21:46Speaker 2: a lot of guys to choose from the three tech
- 21:50Speaker 2: penetrator types. Not a great class for that, Like you're
- 21:53Speaker 2: not gonna find a You're not gonna find a Jaalen
- 21:55Speaker 2: Carter in this class, and you're not gonna find anybody
- 21:57Speaker 2: in like that vein either, like a guy that's a
- 21:59Speaker 2: true penetrate type. You're just because even the guys that
- 22:02Speaker 2: you do have that are like that to have some
- 22:04Speaker 2: question marks, like a Peter Woods out of Clemson in
- 22:07Speaker 2: terms of like why his production dipped from twenty twenty
- 22:09Speaker 2: four to twenty twenty five. There's always gonna be value
- 22:12Speaker 2: of like a Caleb Proctor from Southeastern Louisiana somewhere in
- 22:16Speaker 2: the in the mid rounds, and guys like Grayson Holton
- 22:19Speaker 2: out of Oklahoma, Like there's no value to be found
- 22:21Speaker 2: in those penetrators, but there's just not a lot of
- 22:23Speaker 2: a lot of them in this class. So if you
- 22:25Speaker 2: want a guy that's gonna be able to split a
- 22:26Speaker 2: gap and make a play in the backfield, it's probably
- 22:29Speaker 2: not the class for you to find value. But if
- 22:31Speaker 2: you just want to pure nose tackle type, there's a
- 22:32Speaker 2: lot of guys from rounds one to four that I
- 22:34Speaker 2: think are going to be able to come in and
- 22:35Speaker 2: play at least in some type of role in twenty
- 22:38Speaker 2: twenty six.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, all right, Well, folks, when we get back,
- 22:40Speaker 1: we got more Eagles talk as it pertains to the
- 22:43Speaker 1: NFL Draft. We're gonna take one more break here when
- 22:46Speaker 1: we get back, more NFL Draft talk with Ryan Roberts
- 22:49Speaker 1: from A to ZA Sports.
- 22:50Speaker 3: We're gonna take that break. Now.
- 22:51Speaker 1: We'll be back in just a bit. All right, let's
- 22:55Speaker 1: dive now into some some Philadelphia Eagles talk ause it
- 22:59Speaker 1: pertains to the draft, because there was something interesting that
- 23:01Speaker 1: you would tweet it out. Love following you on Twitter.
- 23:03Speaker 1: By the way, by the way, why don't you get
- 23:05Speaker 1: out some socials here? I forgot to let you do
- 23:07Speaker 1: your promos at the beginning of the show here, Oh
- 23:09Speaker 1: my gosh, right, get get out some promos, buddy.
- 23:14Speaker 2: It's it's it's really only Twitter for me at rise
- 23:16Speaker 2: and drafts. On Twitter's where like my my biggest following
- 23:19Speaker 2: is and you can follow the pot at best pot
- 23:21Speaker 2: available on YouTube. I'm on TikTok and Instagram. But like
- 23:26Speaker 2: it's like I think, I think it's R and D
- 23:28Speaker 2: scouting for both. Like I barely go on those those platforms.
- 23:31Speaker 2: To be honest with you, I know I probably should
- 23:33Speaker 2: be better at my job, but yeah, Twitter, Twitter at
- 23:36Speaker 2: rise in draft if you want the actual content, I
- 23:38Speaker 2: suppose it.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Just gets overwhelming with all the sites. It just gets
- 23:42Speaker 3: like and then there's so many.
- 23:43Speaker 2: It's someone so many in my site was like, you
- 23:45Speaker 2: need to start doing blue Sky more because it's general general,
- 23:48Speaker 2: like it's gradually growing. And I'm like, okay, so I'm
- 23:51Speaker 2: on blue Sky and I have like five hundred followers
- 23:54Speaker 2: or something. I'm like, all right, there you go. There's
- 23:55Speaker 2: blue Sky.
- 23:56Speaker 3: There you go, there you go.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Well look, I was looking at and as I see
- 24:00Speaker 1: your Twitter posts come up on my feed, you recently
- 24:05Speaker 1: tweeted out an indication that the Eagles may trade up
- 24:08Speaker 1: at the top of the second round. I thought it
- 24:12Speaker 1: was interesting. So what's giving you those vibes and feelings
- 24:15Speaker 1: when looking at the Eagles in this draft that they
- 24:17Speaker 1: may do something like that.
- 24:18Speaker 3: What are your thoughts?
- 24:20Speaker 2: I mean, Howie Roseman's obviously a great general manager, and
- 24:24Speaker 2: I think that he's a person that is also willing
- 24:27Speaker 2: to be aggressive, like we've seen aggressive this throughout drafts
- 24:30Speaker 2: in general. Like I remember when they remember when they
- 24:33Speaker 2: traded out for DeVonta Smith and for a second, I
- 24:34Speaker 2: thought it was gonna be Michael Parsons and they drafted DeVante
- 24:37Speaker 2: Smith and then they're aggressive and they're okay with taking
- 24:39Speaker 2: guys that maybe have some question marks like a Jaalen Carter.
- 24:43Speaker 2: So like, I just think that and how he is
- 24:46Speaker 2: traded back a lot too, because he likes to recoup
- 24:48Speaker 2: value and all those types of things as well. But like,
- 24:50Speaker 2: I just don't I think he's a very unpredictable general manager, right,
- 24:54Speaker 2: Like I think that he's a guy that is no
- 24:55Speaker 2: problem being aggressive moving up when he needs to be.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I also think that he is a guy that like
- 25:00Speaker 2: to move back and be able to recoup his mounth
- 25:01Speaker 2: pitch picks because he's a he's he's a general manager
- 25:04Speaker 2: that he understands manipulation. And I kind of it's so
- 25:08Speaker 2: curious sometimes where I'm like, I don't even know why
- 25:10Speaker 2: teams do business with him sometimes because I feel like
- 25:13Speaker 2: he always gets the value against them, you know, like
- 25:15Speaker 2: some of these trades. Man, I'm just like, especially when
- 25:18Speaker 2: he does like player trades, I'm like man, how did.
- 25:20Speaker 3: He get that much back?
- 25:21Speaker 2: That's that's crazy to me, you know, or how much?
- 25:23Speaker 2: How did he not have to pay anything for that?
- 25:25Speaker 2: And then you you know, the cap cap manipulation that
- 25:28Speaker 2: he does always is top notch and everything. So I
- 25:31Speaker 2: just in a in a class that's a little bit
- 25:33Speaker 2: of a wild card. I think the Philadelphia Eagles could
- 25:35Speaker 2: be one of those teams where it's like a team
- 25:37Speaker 2: that could potentially be on the move one way or
- 25:39Speaker 2: the other. Like they're one team that just kind of
- 25:41Speaker 2: strikes me for whatever reason, because they also do have
- 25:43Speaker 2: and this can go into more deeper conversation, I guess
- 25:46Speaker 2: they also have more needs than I think people realize
- 25:49Speaker 2: absolutely on this team like they do. I mean because
- 25:52Speaker 2: wide receiver depending on the A. J. Brown situation after
- 25:56Speaker 2: July get to that and all that type of stuff,
- 25:59Speaker 2: So like what's gonna happen with with AJ Brown? And
- 26:01Speaker 2: then you have an edge need obviously as well. You
- 26:05Speaker 2: need to kind of get some younger talent there. And
- 26:07Speaker 2: you have a safety need, you have a corner two need,
- 26:09Speaker 2: like you, you have some needs on this Eagles team.
- 26:11Speaker 2: It's still obviously a great roster comparatively to most other
- 26:14Speaker 2: teams in the NFL and then there's a lot of
- 26:16Speaker 2: upper echelon roster, but they do. And I mean that's
- 26:18Speaker 2: not even accounting, Like I feel gotta keep mocking a
- 26:21Speaker 2: right tackle to throw out the Eagles even though they're
- 26:23Speaker 2: gonna play in twenty twenty six, because it's like when
- 26:25Speaker 2: is Lane When is Lane Johnson gonna hang it up?
- 26:27Speaker 2: You know, and then you're off the landon Dickerson stuff,
- 26:30Speaker 2: where like his body's starting to break down, Like there's
- 26:32Speaker 2: there's needs on this team to be filled.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Man, there's needs absolutely. Well, look, you mentioned the AJ
- 26:38Speaker 1: Brown situation, and honestly, it's not It's not something we've
- 26:41Speaker 1: talked a lot about on this show because there's a
- 26:43Speaker 1: lot of noise within the world of Philly sports talk radio,
- 26:47Speaker 1: some of the TV personalities, all the crap going on
- 26:49Speaker 1: with Jalen Hurts right now. It's it's there's a lot
- 26:52Speaker 1: of ridiculousness out there. But I did find it interesting
- 26:56Speaker 1: that you and your co host uh again are friend
- 26:59Speaker 1: of the Padjo da Le uploaded a recent mock draft
- 27:02Speaker 1: over at Best Pod Available and over at a to
- 27:05Speaker 1: Za Sports, and you specifically had the Eagles taking wide
- 27:09Speaker 1: receiver Casey Concepcion from Texas A and M because of
- 27:14Speaker 1: the whole AJ Brown situation. So I'm are you sticking
- 27:18Speaker 1: with that or are you feeling like the Eagles take
- 27:20Speaker 1: a wide receiver in the first round because of this situation?
- 27:25Speaker 3: Your thoughts to close us.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Out here on this, buddy, Well, I think I think
- 27:29Speaker 2: that what they do in the first two rounds of
- 27:32Speaker 2: this draft are going to tell us the story of
- 27:34Speaker 2: what's gonna happen with AJ Brown tip or hat, because
- 27:37Speaker 2: they have to write, like, I mean, DeVante Smith is
- 27:39Speaker 2: obviously a great football player, right, and he's gonna do
- 27:43Speaker 2: his stuff that he's always done. Arguably a number one
- 27:45Speaker 2: outside puably a number one yeah, you know, yeah, arguably
- 27:48Speaker 2: number one outside of him. Though, if you don't have
- 27:50Speaker 2: a J. Brown, it's like, what do we have exactly
- 27:54Speaker 2: to be excited about? So I think that they need
- 27:56Speaker 2: to invest early if the AJ Brown saga is ending
- 27:59Speaker 2: the soft season. And I am I'm I'm. I live
- 28:03Speaker 2: in South Jersey, so I listen to WIP and and
- 28:07Speaker 2: all these radio stations, and I WAT and I listen
- 28:10Speaker 2: to people that are supposedly a lot more plugged in
- 28:13Speaker 2: and all this type of stuff. And I keep hearing,
- 28:15Speaker 2: and I keep hearing, and I keep hearing, and obviously
- 28:17Speaker 2: I followed the aj Brown stuff over the last I mean,
- 28:19Speaker 2: this isn't a new thing, like this has been a
- 28:21Speaker 2: thing for years. You know, It's just ya for whatever reason,
- 28:24Speaker 2: he is just seems very unhappy a lot. He seems
- 28:27Speaker 2: to have a little bit of a beef with the quarterback.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Like it's just it's it's there, right, So at some
- 28:33Speaker 2: point it's gonna end. I don't know if it's gonna
- 28:35Speaker 2: be this offseason for sure, but like it's going to
- 28:37Speaker 2: end at some point, like it is, right, And I
- 28:40Speaker 2: think then and there's a lot of smoke out there
- 28:42Speaker 2: with like the New England Patriots, and I think the
- 28:45Speaker 2: Rams were involved in a minute. But like obviously later
- 28:48Speaker 2: this offseason, it's gonna be much easier to trade and
- 28:51Speaker 2: do all that type of stuff. And I am mentally
- 28:54Speaker 2: preparing myself. And this is not insider trade. I don't
- 28:57Speaker 2: know if he's gonna get traded for sure, but I
- 29:00Speaker 2: do think that there is a whole lot of smoke, man,
- 29:02Speaker 2: and it's been smoking now for a couple of years,
- 29:04Speaker 2: and I think that there's gonna be a point where
- 29:06Speaker 2: there's probably a breaking point with the AJ Brown situation,
- 29:09Speaker 2: and it could happen this offseason, and in that particular
- 29:12Speaker 2: mock I looked at it and said, Casey Conceptsio was
- 29:15Speaker 2: on the board, Who's a very different player than AJ Brown.
- 29:18Speaker 2: AJ is you know, AJ six one two twenty something
- 29:22Speaker 2: physical after the catch, while Casey's a much different player
- 29:25Speaker 2: at you know, five eleven and one hundred and ninety
- 29:28Speaker 2: six to two hundred pounds. He does a lot of
- 29:30Speaker 2: the same things that AJ also does do well though
- 29:33Speaker 2: in terms of after the catch, he just does it differently,
- 29:35Speaker 2: like he's not physical after the catch. He's a really
- 29:37Speaker 2: good space player after the catch, can make guys missing
- 29:40Speaker 2: tight quarters like that type of stuff. So in my mind,
- 29:43Speaker 2: I was trying because in reality, if Chris Bell from
- 29:46Speaker 2: Louisville wasn't hurts like, that would be my guy. Where
- 29:48Speaker 2: I'm like, you know, twenty three, that might be Chris
- 29:50Speaker 2: Bell spot but with him coming back from the ACL
- 29:52Speaker 2: tear and maybe not being available for the beginning part
- 29:54Speaker 2: of the beginning of season, I looked at Casey Conceptsyo
- 29:57Speaker 2: and I'm like, I'm gonna try to recreate some of
- 29:59Speaker 2: what AJ does in a different package, right, because I
- 30:03Speaker 2: just think that the value was there. And then also
- 30:05Speaker 2: even if if AJ does play for another year, let's
- 30:08Speaker 2: say I do think of an offense that has Casey
- 30:12Speaker 2: Conceptsion working out of the slots, and then you also
- 30:15Speaker 2: have those two guys outside and you can mix the
- 30:17Speaker 2: match skill sets in and out with both of them. Right,
- 30:19Speaker 2: So I actually think that it could be a nice
- 30:21Speaker 2: short term fix for wide receiver three, and then eventually
- 30:25Speaker 2: he is your wide receiver two and we'll see what
- 30:28Speaker 2: happens with his development after that. So yeah, it's definitely
- 30:30Speaker 2: to help yourself in case the AJ Brown stuff does
- 30:34Speaker 2: go south. But again, like the breaking point I think
- 30:37Speaker 2: is gonna happen somewhere, and I think that the value
- 30:39Speaker 2: there for Casey conception because I asked another question on
- 30:41Speaker 2: Twitter the other day, Jeff, because I've watched a ton
- 30:43Speaker 2: of Casey conceptsi on. Yeah, a ton of them, because
- 30:45Speaker 2: he has like he's like drop percentages too high, and
- 30:49Speaker 2: like there's some stuff about him that makes him an
- 30:50Speaker 2: imperfect prospect obviously, but I have yet to find a game,
- 30:54Speaker 2: and I even watch the LSU game and I thought
- 30:56Speaker 2: Manswort Delaine had a battle with him, right, like they
- 30:58Speaker 2: were battle back and forth. But every of these draft
- 31:01Speaker 2: eligible corners that I keep hearing about, like in the
- 31:04Speaker 2: first round and like Brandon CIEs from from South Carolina
- 31:08Speaker 2: and a couple other guys, I'm like, is there any
- 31:11Speaker 2: draft eligible cornerback this year that had a good game
- 31:13Speaker 2: against Casey Concepcion? Like it was? There one like I was.
- 31:17Speaker 2: He's just opened constantly. So I think that he would
- 31:20Speaker 2: be a nice weapon for Jalen Hurts regardless of the
- 31:22Speaker 2: AJ Brown situation. But also I think if the AG
- 31:24Speaker 2: Brown situation does come to an end, I think that
- 31:27Speaker 2: he is a guy that can plug and play and
- 31:28Speaker 2: be able to give you some offense that you desperately
- 31:30Speaker 2: need after the catch.
