Latest / Foul Territory / State of the Padres w/Darren Smith
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk Padres right now, and we'll talk Giants too,
- 0:10Speaker 1: since they're matching up with them at the moment. Darren
- 0:12Speaker 1: Smith is joining us. You can hear them all over
- 0:15Speaker 1: the scene in San Diego and of course part of
- 0:17Speaker 1: Friar territory along with Marty Caswell. Darren, great to have
- 0:20Speaker 1: you on, man, appreciate the time, and let's just start
- 0:23Speaker 1: with a nice and simple state of the Padres.
- 0:25Speaker 2: After about a week of baseball, your thoughts not great?
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yeah, not exactly out of the gates firing here like
- 0:33Speaker 3: people had hoped. With a new manager and an emphasis
- 0:37Speaker 3: on wanting to change the dynamic of how you approached
- 0:41Speaker 3: hitting the baseball, it's not been good at all.
- 0:44Speaker 2: It's one and four.
- 0:46Speaker 3: You lose a couple of games where you expect Nick
- 0:48Speaker 3: Pavetta and Michael King. Right, if you're gonna have a
- 0:51Speaker 3: rotation where you have Walker Bueller and Harman Marquees, you
- 0:55Speaker 3: probably want to feel pretty good about the games where
- 0:58Speaker 3: you're pitching the front of the road. That didn't quite
- 1:01Speaker 3: work out against the Detroit Tigers. So one and four,
- 1:04Speaker 3: the team has only hit two home runs. They are
- 1:07Speaker 3: for what this is worth through five games, thirtieth and slugging,
- 1:10Speaker 3: which is kind of reminiscent of twenty twenty five.
- 1:13Speaker 2: So it's not good.
- 1:14Speaker 3: And they are staring down the barrel of a sweep
- 1:17Speaker 3: today this afternoon at Peco Park to the San Francisco
- 1:19Speaker 3: Giants who have woken up in San Diego after a
- 1:22Speaker 3: miserable start in their home ballpark.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Other than that, everything's great.
- 1:26Speaker 4: It sounds like a blast, sounds like sunny San Diego.
- 1:28Speaker 4: I mean sounds like you know what, Darren. It sounds
- 1:29Speaker 4: like you're in Philadelphia right now. It doesn't sound like
- 1:32Speaker 4: you're in Sandy. Everyone's always happy in San Diego. I
- 1:35Speaker 4: thought you're clearly in Philadelphia with Crats, not San Diego.
- 1:38Speaker 4: My question is, is Vitello's there? He got his first
- 1:41Speaker 4: two wins. Craig Salmon is the manager of the Padres,
- 1:44Speaker 4: and we had Jim Bowden on yesterday saying how he
- 1:46Speaker 4: thinks both of them looked over match. Is that the
- 1:49Speaker 4: feeling you're getting from Padres people. I haven't really I'm
- 1:52Speaker 4: not gonna lie. I haven't watched a ton of the
- 1:54Speaker 4: Padres so far this year because you know, ten pm
- 1:57Speaker 4: is way past my bedtime most of the time. Is
- 2:00Speaker 4: not the case, because I like Craig and I think
- 2:03Speaker 4: he's a good guy and he'll be a good manager.
- 2:05Speaker 4: But you know, jump into this with really no experiences.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Tough.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think everybody likes Craig. I don't
- 2:10Speaker 3: know anybody who would ever say anything bad about Craig Stammon.
- 2:13Speaker 3: But you know, it's not what we're talking about here.
- 2:15Speaker 3: We're talking about him being the manager of a big
- 2:17Speaker 3: league club, especially when you've interviewed other high profile names
- 2:21Speaker 3: and it's not gone well, and today's you know, it's
- 2:24Speaker 3: an interesting day to talk about it. You know, I
- 2:26Speaker 3: don't know that there was anything that was really obvious
- 2:29Speaker 3: about stamman managing through the first couple of games. Maybe
- 2:33Speaker 3: a question about leaving Jeremiah Estrata in a little bit longer.
- 2:38Speaker 3: In game number two of the series, he ended up
- 2:41Speaker 3: walking three straight batters, and you know, the Tigers, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 3: opened up a can in the eighth inning of the
- 2:47Speaker 3: second game of the season. But you know, the question
- 2:49Speaker 3: is whether or not you use Mason Miller for more
- 2:51Speaker 3: than three outs. He said, that's just not something that
- 2:53Speaker 3: we're going to do. Early on in the season, we
- 2:55Speaker 3: decided that before the game Okay, fine, you can live
- 2:57Speaker 3: with that. But you know, as we're talking today and
- 3:00Speaker 3: I mentioned the potteris and the Giants are playing a
- 3:02Speaker 3: little later on, they had their worst game aesthetically of
- 3:07Speaker 3: the season.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Didn't look good.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Guys not throwing to the right bases, balls dropping between outfielders.
- 3:14Speaker 3: There was some really questionable decision making about how long
- 3:18Speaker 3: they left Kyle Hart, a relief pitcher in the game who.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Ended up getting touched up.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I thought he was asked about that and he had
- 3:27Speaker 3: to answer questions about that in the postgame press conference.
- 3:30Speaker 3: His lineup decision, I think is starting to raise an
- 3:34Speaker 3: eyebrow or two.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Again, it's so early. It sounds sort of stupid to say.
- 3:37Speaker 3: This, But when Ramon Loriano is your hottest hitter and
- 3:41Speaker 3: you sit him on the bench for some nebulous statistics
- 3:44Speaker 3: so that you can put Castellanos and Andrew Hart in there,
- 3:48Speaker 3: and it doesn't work, I think you're gonna have people
- 3:51Speaker 3: asking you're under a microscope. You know, you are a
- 3:54Speaker 3: guy like Jim Boden said, like you guys have talked about,
- 3:56Speaker 3: like we've talked about here, you are under a microscope
- 3:59Speaker 3: because you know this was not a conventional decision or
- 4:03Speaker 3: somebody who you know had made the rounds interviewing for
- 4:06Speaker 3: these managerial gigs, so you know, there should be a
- 4:08Speaker 3: little bit of a brighter spotlight for him trying to
- 4:11Speaker 3: to prove why he was the choice over some other candidates,
- 4:15Speaker 3: you know. And today's one of those days now where
- 4:17Speaker 3: you're you're looking again and like Tatisa's back in the
- 4:20Speaker 3: leadoff spot and cronin Worth's drop back down, and he's
- 4:23Speaker 3: done some things differently again and it's you know, just
- 4:26Speaker 3: game six of the season. So I would say he's
- 4:30Speaker 3: he's not really done anything that's been incredibly damning, but
- 4:35Speaker 3: it's it's certainly not he has not made the case.
- 4:39Speaker 3: You know, he has not exactly shown a ton to
- 4:43Speaker 3: support the decision that was made to hire him in
- 4:46Speaker 3: the first place, which you know, again was like as
- 4:48Speaker 3: unconventional as it possibly could be.
- 4:52Speaker 5: So when you're looking under a microscope, what are they
- 4:55Speaker 5: looking for? Are people looking for, oh, he did that wrong?
- 5:00Speaker 5: Because if that's the case, you're always going to find
- 5:02Speaker 5: something like what has he done right in the sense
- 5:05Speaker 5: of how this team is going to succeed over one
- 5:08Speaker 5: hundred and sixty two games, Because last I checked he
- 5:12Speaker 5: ain't got no slug Craig stan Stamman's slugging in his
- 5:16Speaker 5: career was pretty brutal, and I'm pretty sure as a
- 5:20Speaker 5: manager he can't do any of it. And unless something
- 5:23Speaker 5: like that changes, is this team more than just a
- 5:26Speaker 5: five hundred team?
- 5:29Speaker 3: Hard to make that prediction today, especially when we haven't
- 5:34Speaker 3: seen any evidence that Walker Bueller and you know, Harmon
- 5:37Speaker 3: Marquez or are you know, definitely going to stick around
- 5:42Speaker 3: as the fourth and fifth starters or are they just
- 5:45Speaker 3: seat fillers until whenever it is that Joe Musgrove returns
- 5:49Speaker 3: and you can get Griffin Channing healthy whenever that might be.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Is that what the situation is there? So yeah, I
- 5:57Speaker 3: mean I think, you know, the thing that I've been
- 5:59Speaker 3: thinking about is you do want to be you know,
- 6:02Speaker 3: you don't want to be ridiculous here and talk about
- 6:05Speaker 3: you know, how this is anything is definitive, right, This
- 6:08Speaker 3: isn't indelible how they've come out of the gates. You know,
- 6:12Speaker 3: Fernando Tatis Junior Manum Chelda, they don't have a home
- 6:14Speaker 3: run between them, right, So is that going to continue?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Obviously it's not. But they were not a good slugging
- 6:20Speaker 3: team last year. And that was a big point of emphasis.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You know, they were twenty second in slugging in twenty
- 6:25Speaker 3: twenty five, and they were twentieth twenty eighth in home
- 6:28Speaker 3: runs hit. So as much as you say, okay, wipe
- 6:31Speaker 3: the slate clean and start all over again in twenty
- 6:33Speaker 3: twenty six, you know, it's not up to us just
- 6:36Speaker 3: to say automatically, Okay, we believe that you're going to
- 6:38Speaker 3: be a different team. It's up to them to prove
- 6:39Speaker 3: that they're going to be a different team. And so
- 6:41Speaker 3: they haven't done that. So you know, when you replace
- 6:43Speaker 3: a manager, whether people like Mike Schulter or not, the
- 6:46Speaker 3: fact of the matter is he did win ninety games
- 6:48Speaker 3: last year, and he won ninety three games the previous season,
- 6:51Speaker 3: you know, so he had a way of winning even
- 6:55Speaker 3: with some of these deficiencies that have shown themselves early on.
- 6:58Speaker 3: And you know, I I don't know what it is
- 7:01Speaker 3: that we expect to see. Maybe Craig Stammon was brought
- 7:03Speaker 3: in here because he's a little less volatile than Mike Schuldt. Well,
- 7:06Speaker 3: I think a lot of people would take the volatility
- 7:08Speaker 3: of Mike Schildt, which mostly happened behind the scenes, if
- 7:12Speaker 3: it meant that you were in the high eighties or
- 7:14Speaker 3: in the nineties when it came to wins, and you know,
- 7:16Speaker 3: to have one of your worst starts in recent memory
- 7:18Speaker 3: here with this new manager and seeing some of the
- 7:21Speaker 3: same flaws that people pointed out over the last year
- 7:25Speaker 3: or two, I don't know that it is building any
- 7:27Speaker 3: confidence whatsoever in the decision making the part Craig Stammon there,
- 7:32Speaker 3: so you know, I can't point to anything other than
- 7:34Speaker 3: his personality is not as abrasive, you know, as it
- 7:39Speaker 3: was when Mike Shuilt was here. And maybe people you
- 7:42Speaker 3: know whose names nobody really knows, you know, maybe their
- 7:45Speaker 3: lives are a little bit easier because they don't get
- 7:47Speaker 3: yelled at behind the scenes. But you know, is the
- 7:50Speaker 3: trade off that you're not going to win on the
- 7:53Speaker 3: same level, then, you know, again, I don't know that
- 7:56Speaker 3: that's really a trade off that people are willing to make,
- 7:58Speaker 3: because forty thousand people are filling that ballpark every single
- 8:01Speaker 3: night and it's not exactly been a ton of fun
- 8:04Speaker 3: here through the first five games of twenty twenty six.
- 8:07Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by Fox One Go

- 8:52Speaker 1: one streaming.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Now, there last thing for me on Craig, is he
- 8:56Speaker 4: making the lineup? Because you said questionable lineup decisions and
- 8:59Speaker 4: Q and that do we know that? Is that coming
- 9:03Speaker 4: from Preller? Is that coming from up above as m
- 9:06Speaker 4: Murphy calls on the Ivory Tower or does stand and
- 9:09Speaker 4: have full, you know, full power over the lineup to
- 9:13Speaker 4: make it how he wants it?
- 9:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think that's that's a good question,
- 9:18Speaker 3: and it's probably specific to Craig Stamon. You know what
- 9:20Speaker 3: I've been told in this era where so many of
- 9:22Speaker 3: the lineup decisions are coming from front offices, I've been
- 9:25Speaker 3: told that, you know, Aj Preller doesn't do that sort
- 9:28Speaker 3: of stuff. You know that the pottery's front office may
- 9:30Speaker 3: have from their research and development department. They may have
- 9:33Speaker 3: an optimized lineup that they would present, that they might suggest,
- 9:37Speaker 3: but ultimately they're going to leave autonomy to the manager. Now,
- 9:39Speaker 3: you're not going to tell Mike Schild how to fill
- 9:42Speaker 3: out the lineup card. You're not going to tell Bob
- 9:43Speaker 3: Melvin how to fill the lineup card. Then again, those
- 9:46Speaker 3: guys only lasted two years here, right, so you know
- 9:48Speaker 3: who he really knows what was going on, and whether
- 9:51Speaker 3: that was part of the you know, the perceived friction
- 9:54Speaker 3: between the coaching staff and the front office.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I don't know how it is. With Craig Staman.
- 9:58Speaker 3: It was unusual because he came in the spring training
- 10:00Speaker 3: and one of the first things that he said, and
- 10:02Speaker 3: one of the first the lick literally the first lineup
- 10:05Speaker 3: that we saw from Peoria Arizona, Fernando Tatis Junior, who
- 10:08Speaker 3: batted leadoff in one hundred and fifty games in twenty
- 10:11Speaker 3: twenty five, who was an All Star, you know, who
- 10:14Speaker 3: did some things.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Maybe not forty home runs like.
- 10:16Speaker 3: What we saw from twenty nineteen, twenty twenty, twenty twenty one.
- 10:20Speaker 2: But you know, he did some things.
- 10:21Speaker 3: He took a lot of pitches, he walked, He had
- 10:23Speaker 3: a high end base percentage, so you know, he did
- 10:25Speaker 3: a lot of things really well. And he seemed to
- 10:26Speaker 3: be a really good leadoff hitter for the pod race.
- 10:29Speaker 3: He seemed to be the obvious choice and the first lineup.
- 10:32Speaker 3: You know, now we're seeing him batting forth. Everybody's kind
- 10:34Speaker 3: of scratching their head, saying, wait, wait, what's that all about?
- 10:37Speaker 2: Uh, how do you not only remove him from.
- 10:39Speaker 3: The leadoff spot, but how is it that you have
- 10:41Speaker 3: him batting clean up here like you're not you're gonna
- 10:44Speaker 3: run the rest that you're not gonna get that guy
- 10:45Speaker 3: in a bat in the first inning. That kind of
- 10:46Speaker 3: seems bonkers, and Craig Stalmon had to stand up there
- 10:49Speaker 3: and explain it.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Why it was that he thought that that might be good.
- 10:53Speaker 3: For Fernando, And part of it was that I guess
- 10:55Speaker 3: Fernando said he didn't think he did a good job
- 10:57Speaker 3: in the leadoff spot.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Whatever I thought he was good.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I thought he seemed like the obvious choice, but then
- 11:03Speaker 3: he started mixing and matching, and maybe you're going to
- 11:05Speaker 3: see cronin Worth in there against righty's, and then you're
- 11:07Speaker 3: going to see maybe Sander Bogart's in there against lefties.
- 11:10Speaker 3: And then Tatis comes back from the World Baseball Classic
- 11:12Speaker 3: where he batted lead off, and then he goes back
- 11:15Speaker 3: into the leadoff spot, but he did it for a game,
- 11:18Speaker 3: and then he was batting second, and now he's in
- 11:20Speaker 3: there today against the rioty So it's just like, wait,
- 11:22Speaker 3: what's how are we arriving at these decisions. I don't
- 11:26Speaker 3: know if something has changed from from what I came
- 11:29Speaker 3: to understand with the Potters that these decisions were not
- 11:32Speaker 3: mandated by Aj Preller or anybody in his front office.
- 11:37Speaker 3: I don't know if that has changed or not, but
- 11:41Speaker 3: it has been a big subject, literally since the first
- 11:44Speaker 3: game of Cactus League, when people wondered why it was
- 11:48Speaker 3: that Fernando Tatis Junior was batting clean up for the Potters,
- 11:51Speaker 3: which just doesn't make any sense to anybody.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Let's also remind fans out there who don't follow the
- 11:56Speaker 5: Padres as much that Craig Stammon was in that front
- 12:00Speaker 5: office and these ideas didn't just like poof out of
- 12:04Speaker 5: the middle of nowhere. So moving on, that microscope will continue,
- 12:08Speaker 5: and it will continue with is exact quote, Craig Stammonds
- 12:11Speaker 5: exact quote. I'd like to see us finish the game
- 12:15Speaker 5: with no challenges left, or at least challenge a little
- 12:18Speaker 5: bit more. Do you agree with him? But it does
- 12:21Speaker 5: also shed light on the fact that maybe this conversation
- 12:26Speaker 5: wasn't necessarily talked enough about, with the fact that they
- 12:29Speaker 5: had a lot of guys gone for the WBC on
- 12:33Speaker 5: this roster.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I think, yeah, I think that that answer is in
- 12:37Speaker 3: response to something that happened the other night with Fernando
- 12:40Speaker 3: Tatis Junior where he came to bat in the ninth
- 12:43Speaker 3: inning and at least, you know, according to the you know,
- 12:46Speaker 3: the television k box that you see out there on
- 12:49Speaker 3: the screen, it was a pitch that that certainly looked
- 12:51Speaker 3: like it should have been challenged, and the potteries had
- 12:53Speaker 3: a challenge and Fernando, who who had challenged to pitch
- 12:57Speaker 3: the previous day, didn't get it overturned. And we talked
- 13:00Speaker 3: a little bit about this yesterday that that maybe he
- 13:03Speaker 3: had that in the back of his mind, or maybe
- 13:05Speaker 3: because it was at the top of the zone. It
- 13:06Speaker 3: seems like there's this idea that that pitches towards the
- 13:09Speaker 3: top of the zone are a little bit harder for
- 13:11Speaker 3: the hitters to identify.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I don't know, you know, if that's one hundred percent accurate.
- 13:15Speaker 3: But just a theory that you see out there, and
- 13:18Speaker 3: you know, in a game where where you're you're only
- 13:21Speaker 3: you know, you're struggling to score runs to begin with.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I mean, the Potteries have only scored twelve times. They
- 13:25Speaker 3: haven't scored more than three runs in any game this year,
- 13:29Speaker 3: and you're you're kind of you know, it becomes a
- 13:31Speaker 3: little bit of a referendum, like, well, what's going on here?
- 13:33Speaker 2: Are they engaged with this? Do they know what's going on?
- 13:36Speaker 3: And it's probably unfair to say that Fernando Tatis Junior
- 13:39Speaker 3: is just not paying attention, you know, in the ninth
- 13:41Speaker 3: inning of a game where you know it's a save situation,
- 13:45Speaker 3: especially then because Jackson Merrill goes on to head a
- 13:47Speaker 3: two run homer and you're starting to now think in
- 13:49Speaker 3: your mind, well, you know, what could this have been?
- 13:52Speaker 3: But I think that's you know, they've had six overturns.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I don't know how many actual challenges. Forgive me for
- 13:57Speaker 3: not having that, but I know they've had six overturns
- 14:00Speaker 3: and their catchers have done a pretty good job. Luise Campusano,
- 14:03Speaker 3: who you know, was playing here after playing last season
- 14:06Speaker 3: in Triple A where he was accustomed to the system, Yeah,
- 14:08Speaker 3: he's brought a little bit of knowledge to you know,
- 14:11Speaker 3: how it works and how it operated in Triple A
- 14:13Speaker 3: last year.
- 14:14Speaker 2: So that's been a good thing. But but yeah, like it.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Was just weird because you know, I don't know that
- 14:18Speaker 3: it's fair to say, you know that this is a
- 14:21Speaker 3: mistake or a mental mistake for Fernando because he was
- 14:25Speaker 3: at the World Baseball Classic and maybe he didn't have
- 14:27Speaker 3: a ton of experience with it, or maybe he was
- 14:30Speaker 3: thinking about the previous challenge that didn't get overturned.
- 14:33Speaker 2: But yeah, like you don't get to take them.
- 14:35Speaker 3: With you, you know, like you got kind of use them,
- 14:38Speaker 3: especially when the game is on the line. So it
- 14:41Speaker 3: felt like it was a missed opportunity, you know, it
- 14:43Speaker 3: felt like it was a missed opportunity two nights ago
- 14:46Speaker 3: for the potteris in Fernando in particular and Yeah, people
- 14:49Speaker 3: were wondering, and so I think that's what Craig Stammond was.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Responding to, is is them.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Trying to feel their way through this, especially when they
- 14:55Speaker 3: have had players who didn't stick around like Fernando and
- 14:58Speaker 3: Many Machado for the WB.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Same seeing it for the last two games. What do
- 15:02Speaker 5: you feel like you're seeing from the Giants from a
- 15:05Speaker 5: standpoint of they're in the same division as the Padres.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Obviously the record isn't that much better than the Padres,
- 15:13Speaker 5: but you know, early on, what is it that you're
- 15:15Speaker 5: seeing from that team lineup or rotation wise.
- 15:21Speaker 3: I'm seeing a team that looks like it's relieved to
- 15:23Speaker 3: be through the first series of the year and all
- 15:25Speaker 3: the nonsense that came with Netflix and an off day
- 15:28Speaker 3: and then the second day and just like hey, sometimes,
- 15:32Speaker 3: as you all know, like sometimes just getting changing atmosphere
- 15:37Speaker 3: is you know, it's a it's a comfortable place to
- 15:40Speaker 3: be for certain guys. Maybe that's what's going to happen
- 15:42Speaker 3: to the Pottery's they're on the way to Boston and
- 15:44Speaker 3: Pittsburgh here over their next couple of series.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't.
- 15:48Speaker 3: I mean, I think Beata's pretty good. I think Chapman's
- 15:50Speaker 3: always really good. A Damas is pretty good.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You know.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I think they have a lineup that that you know,
- 15:55Speaker 3: you look at. They have an ace you know, and
- 15:57Speaker 3: logan web that you you know, you certainly like. Yeah,
- 16:00Speaker 3: I mean I think that they have some guys, especially
- 16:02Speaker 3: at the front of the rotation, that you look and think, yeah,
- 16:05Speaker 3: that could be pretty good. So yeah, I don't you know,
- 16:09Speaker 3: I didn't think they were gonna just completely melt down
- 16:11Speaker 3: to start the season, but they got a little bit
- 16:14Speaker 3: of pop.
- 16:14Speaker 2: You know. A Rise isn't hitting.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Maybe that's one of those WB things that we're always
- 16:18Speaker 3: WBC things that we're we're referencing here about the guys
- 16:20Speaker 3: that played in that tournament. Not quite you know, hitting
- 16:24Speaker 3: the ground running, I guess. But it's an interesting team,
- 16:27Speaker 3: you know, always it is good. Do I think it's
- 16:29Speaker 3: a team that is obviously going to be better positioned
- 16:31Speaker 3: in the West to you know, to to finish second
- 16:35Speaker 3: behind the Dodgers. I think that's probably premature, but at
- 16:39Speaker 3: least for a game when you look at a lineup
- 16:42Speaker 3: and you see guys like Bata and Chapman and a
- 16:43Speaker 3: Damis and you know, then there's a rise maybe.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Batting in the middle of it.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it looks like it's it's definitely improved
- 16:51Speaker 3: from where it was a year ago.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I just don't know.
- 16:53Speaker 3: I don't know enough about this manager. You know, I
- 16:55Speaker 3: don't know enough about this manager, and you know, some
- 16:58Speaker 3: of the stuff that's been said, I know, social media
- 17:00Speaker 3: clipse certainly have made him appear to be completely out
- 17:02Speaker 3: of his depth. But you know, maybe that's just social
- 17:05Speaker 3: media clips. You know, maybe maybe the you know, maybe
- 17:08Speaker 3: the reality isn't isn't as dramatic as it would appear
- 17:11Speaker 3: to be on social.

- 18:14Speaker 5: This is the microscope series because Tony Vitello is also
- 18:17Speaker 5: under microscope, kind of like Craig is under microscope. Last
- 18:21Speaker 5: one that's not under microscope, it doesn't even fit under
- 18:23Speaker 5: a telescope is the valuation that the possible sale number
- 18:30Speaker 5: that came out was three point five billion dollars. Is
- 18:35Speaker 5: this just an unbelievable case of a team saying, you
- 18:40Speaker 5: know what, I don't care what other people say about
- 18:42Speaker 5: this market. We're gonna build this team to be followed
- 18:46Speaker 5: and loved in this city. And then the valuation goes
- 18:50Speaker 5: through the roof like it's obviously it's a success if
- 18:53Speaker 5: that number even gets close to that number for the
- 18:55Speaker 5: San Diego Padres. But seeing it, I felt this way,
- 19:01Speaker 5: did you think that number would be that high as
- 19:04Speaker 5: what we're hearing right now.
- 19:06Speaker 3: No, I mean I thought I was starting to talk
- 19:09Speaker 3: about what it would be like a two and a
- 19:10Speaker 3: half billion, Like, Wow, what an amazing success story. This
- 19:13Speaker 3: thing was sold in twenty twelve for eight hundred million
- 19:15Speaker 3: dollars and now it's going to get sold for two
- 19:18Speaker 3: point five billion.
- 19:19Speaker 2: That's incredible.
- 19:20Speaker 3: So to add another billion dollars on top of that
- 19:23Speaker 3: and make it the high sale price in Major League
- 19:25Speaker 3: Baseball history, I would be lying if I said I
- 19:27Speaker 3: was prepared for that for the pod Rays, especially for
- 19:31Speaker 3: a team that you know, doesn't have a lockdown television
- 19:33Speaker 3: deal or one of these teams that's kind of caught
- 19:35Speaker 3: in between from the regional sports network collapses and waiting
- 19:39Speaker 3: for Major League Baseball to try to get everything under
- 19:41Speaker 3: one roof.
- 19:42Speaker 2: They're least deal.
- 19:43Speaker 3: You know, Peco Park doesn't come with the team, They
- 19:45Speaker 3: don't own the stadium. So yeah, and it's an incredible thing.
- 19:49Speaker 3: And you know what I think it is is I
- 19:50Speaker 3: just mentioned forty thousand plus every single game thus far
- 19:53Speaker 3: to start season, tickets have been capped here in San Diego.
- 19:57Speaker 3: People love this team, and you know, for as much
- 20:00Speaker 3: as pottery fans hate the Dodgers and will definitely give
- 20:04Speaker 3: me some grief for being on the same show as
- 20:05Speaker 3: Max Muncy. But you know, the Dodgers inspired the Pottery's
- 20:09Speaker 3: to spend money, and I think that the Pottery spending
- 20:12Speaker 3: money has proven to this fan base whether they've had
- 20:15Speaker 3: the type of results that are commensurate with the amount
- 20:18Speaker 3: of money that's been spent. I think, you know that
- 20:20Speaker 3: the Pottery is spending money and not just crying about
- 20:23Speaker 3: how the Dodgers are just oh my goodness, what are
- 20:25Speaker 3: we supposed to do?
- 20:26Speaker 2: We can't compete. It's brought out a really good version
- 20:29Speaker 2: of the Potterys.
- 20:30Speaker 3: I think it's been a great example for teams all
- 20:31Speaker 3: across Major League Baseball that you can do it in
- 20:33Speaker 3: a market like San Diego. So, you know, I think
- 20:36Speaker 3: from that standpoint, you know, you can't walk across the
- 20:39Speaker 3: street in town without seeing somebody wearing some Potrey gear.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I mentioned the ticket prices or you know, it's incredible.
- 20:46Speaker 2: What it is that's happening.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Forty thousand plus every single night Pecko Park is making
- 20:51Speaker 3: money hand over fist. You know, I think it's been
- 20:54Speaker 3: a great success story. I think that should be really
- 20:56Speaker 3: the moral of the story here is that the Potterys
- 20:59Speaker 3: and Peter Siler infested in this team in a way
- 21:02Speaker 3: that a lot of people thought was kind of irresponsible
- 21:05Speaker 3: and unsustainable and all these words that were used, and
- 21:08Speaker 3: that family is going to walk away with an awful
- 21:11Speaker 3: lot more money than I think they would have if
- 21:13Speaker 3: they had tried one of these more boring and pragmatic
- 21:16Speaker 3: approaches that we see in a lot of other markets
- 21:18Speaker 3: around baseball.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Hey, Darren, imagine when how much of pods are going
- 21:21Speaker 4: to be worth after they get a salary cut?
- 21:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean probably, you know, but I mean, ain't
- 21:28Speaker 3: having a kids, so they better sell now.
- 21:31Speaker 2: No, I don't think it will either.
- 21:32Speaker 3: And you know again, I mean you even like you
- 21:34Speaker 3: hear guys like Maddy Machado talking about like, hey, like
- 21:37Speaker 3: you know, I mean, why did we turn off the
- 21:39Speaker 3: spigot here? Like we were spending a lot of money too,
- 21:41Speaker 3: Like we should be still in that kind of game. So,
- 21:44Speaker 3: you know, they had a strategy, and they had a
- 21:46Speaker 3: general manager and a president of baseball operations who could
- 21:49Speaker 3: execute the strategy really well, and he worked hand in
- 21:51Speaker 3: glove with the previous owner. I mean, that's the next
- 21:53Speaker 3: big question here is whether or not the president of
- 21:56Speaker 3: baseball operations is going to be compatible with the next owner,
- 21:59Speaker 3: whoever it be, and whatever it is that that might happen.
- 22:02Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean I kind of laugh at all
- 22:05Speaker 3: this because I do. I think that the Dodgers and
- 22:07Speaker 3: the way they spent you know, it inspired the Potterys
- 22:10Speaker 3: to do something that you know, they've proven that that
- 22:13Speaker 3: they can do and they're going to get rewarded for it.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Though it's not you know, it's unsatisfying because you know
- 22:19Speaker 3: it comes following the death of a beloved owner here
- 22:22Speaker 3: in town. But you know, listen, this is a business, right,
- 22:25Speaker 3: It's what we're told over and over and over again.
- 22:27Speaker 3: And the San Diego Potters are going to sell for
- 22:28Speaker 3: over three billion dollars, like you know, seems like a
- 22:31Speaker 3: pretty good deal to me.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Yeah, they're putting on a damn show every now. Like
- 22:36Speaker 1: you mentioned, I mean, that is a fun experience at
- 22:39Speaker 1: the ballpark. It's a packed experience at the ballpark. And
- 22:42Speaker 1: even if you have forty thousand times one hundred bucks
- 22:45Speaker 1: per head, that's four million dollars per night. You do
- 22:48Speaker 1: that over eighty games, even that's three hundred I think
- 22:51Speaker 1: mid three hundreds mils, so just to give you an
- 22:53Speaker 1: idea of how much money you can make just on
- 22:55Speaker 1: the ballpark experience alone. And trust me, there're some people
- 22:58Speaker 1: spending a lot more than one hundred bucks. So anyway,
- 23:00Speaker 1: Darren here the man, thank you so much for joining us.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Really good insight always on the padres. Love listening to
- 23:05Speaker 1: you and Marty on Friar Territory and everything else you do.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Appreciate you, man.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I appreciate you. Guys. Have a good one.
