- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Dan Hurley
- 0:04Speaker 1: with me, I'm Mike Crispiano. We get together pretty much
- 0:07Speaker 1: every week throughout the season. It's a long run. Begins
- 0:10Speaker 1: in November and that's where we are as Yukon is
- 0:13Speaker 1: two and oh coach, Uh, these first couple of games.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I know, you know, there's no perfection in any sport
- 0:19Speaker 1: that I've ever heard of. But do you try to
- 0:21Speaker 1: be perfect with your team, with your guys or what's
- 0:24Speaker 1: the take on your approach in these early games?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean this, you know, I mean the standards
- 0:31Speaker 2: are you know, uh, you know high for how you
- 0:33Speaker 2: want to play. I don't know. Obviously, playing a perfect
- 0:37Speaker 2: game is as good as we've played the last couple
- 0:40Speaker 2: of years. As there's no there's no such thing. You know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: you're looking for growth, you're looking for you know, development,
- 0:47Speaker 2: You're trying to find out who's going to be able
- 0:50Speaker 2: to fill what type of role and who's stepping up.
- 0:52Speaker 2: And yeah, I mean to expect the games to be
- 0:55Speaker 2: played perfectly opening night. Yeah, that's not an expect.
- 1:01Speaker 1: You're scoring in the nineties, you're giving up in the fifties,
- 1:03Speaker 1: you're winning by thirty plus. I mean, you can't really
- 1:07Speaker 1: how much can you ask for from the team in
- 1:10Speaker 1: these early November games as you, I guess, assess it
- 1:13Speaker 1: when the game's over.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I think things that are reasonable is you could apply
- 1:19Speaker 2: the techniques that we teach, that you could look like
- 1:22Speaker 2: you have a grasp of the tactics in our style
- 1:25Speaker 2: of play, that you're going to play incredibly hard, and
- 1:28Speaker 2: that you're going to play with play with a lot
- 1:31Speaker 2: of force and a lot of enthusiasm, and just I
- 1:33Speaker 2: think what you're looking for is just that people look
- 1:36Speaker 2: like they understand how we're trying to play and how
- 1:41Speaker 2: hard we play when we play.
- 1:44Speaker 1: You got some, obviously the returning guys who have won
- 1:46Speaker 1: a couple of championships Hassandiera and Alex Caravan and Samson
- 1:51Speaker 1: Johnson and those guys know what it takes. Obviously. Now
- 1:56Speaker 1: you've got some new players, guys who came from other programs.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Are they understanding is Aiden Mahoney getting what you know
- 2:04Speaker 1: the standard has to be? And Tess Reid guys that
- 2:07Speaker 1: have been in other schools and had success, but now
- 2:10Speaker 1: they're playing at this level where you know you're asking
- 2:13Speaker 1: for the ultimate really every time they step on the court.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Mike, we need we need whether you're
- 2:21Speaker 2: a freshman uh trying to you know, earn a role
- 2:25Speaker 2: or play a big role, or you're you know, those
- 2:28Speaker 2: transfers from you know, from Michigan and Saint Mary's. You know,
- 2:33Speaker 2: we can't afford for them to to not play the
- 2:37Speaker 2: way that we play at Yukon. You know, we could
- 2:40Speaker 2: ill afford, you know, for Tarrists to do the things
- 2:43Speaker 2: that he was doing you know at Michigan, at his position.
- 2:47Speaker 2: You know what we need him being a Yukon front
- 2:50Speaker 2: court player the way you know that are front court
- 2:53Speaker 2: players play great screeners, rim protectors, you know, warriors, great rebounders.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You know, people that you know could understand, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 2: the complexities of how we play basketball. And to expect
- 3:08Speaker 2: those guys to be uh, you know on point both
- 3:11Speaker 2: he and Aiden uh after Game two at this point
- 3:15Speaker 2: would be an unfair expectation. You know. It just it
- 3:20Speaker 2: takes some time here, especially to acclimate to uh, you know,
- 3:24Speaker 2: to the demands and riggers of the program and uh
- 3:28Speaker 2: and to the standards. But you know, we need them
- 3:31Speaker 2: to uh, you know, we need them to learn quickly
- 3:35Speaker 2: because the season is underway.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it certainly is. And Terras you know, six ' ten,
- 3:42Speaker 1: two sixty. I'm not making comparisons here, but his body wise,
- 3:47Speaker 1: he kind of reminds me of Andre Drummon a little bit.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And Andrea tremendous rebound has had a pretty darn good
- 3:52Speaker 1: NBA career only one year at Yukon. Uh, when you're
- 3:57Speaker 1: a center and you're that kind of size, should you
- 4:00Speaker 1: be a guy that expects to dominate the boards. I
- 4:03Speaker 1: know that it's an ongoing process and Yukon's always, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: been a really good rebounding team in these last couple
- 4:08Speaker 1: of years. But is that what you're hoping for from him?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean there's a lot of things you're hoping for.
- 4:13Speaker 2: You know. Tarris has got, uh, just a lot of
- 4:16Speaker 2: physical tools, and I think he's yeah, he's he's he's
- 4:21Speaker 2: got in a live personality, you know. But there's things
- 4:26Speaker 2: like you know, hitting people first when shot goes up,
- 4:31Speaker 2: or hitting people on screens, uh violently, and then and
- 4:38Speaker 2: then attacking rebounds like your life depends on it with
- 4:41Speaker 2: two hands, you know. And then it's you know, it's
- 4:44Speaker 2: finding yourself uh from a defensive standpoint, you know, not
- 4:49Speaker 2: being underneath the rim as guards are or are attacking
- 4:54Speaker 2: to rim, being a big presence and protecting the rim.
- 4:57Speaker 2: There's you know, catching it when you have deep position,
- 5:01Speaker 2: just turning and scoring and not dribbling the ball, uh,
- 5:04Speaker 2: where guards now will come down and swipe at it
- 5:07Speaker 2: or you get fouled and now you've got to make
- 5:09Speaker 2: two free throws. So I just think there's a you know, there,
- 5:13Speaker 2: there's an identity you know that that the Tarris has
- 5:16Speaker 2: got to develop in terms of the things that he
- 5:19Speaker 2: should focus on being good at. And uh, a lot
- 5:22Speaker 2: of them are fundamental things like like grabbing the ball
- 5:25Speaker 2: with two hands and and uh, playing for position and
- 5:29Speaker 2: being a great screener and rebounder.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Dan Hurley Willis and the Ukon men's basketball coaches show, Hey, Dan,
- 5:35Speaker 1: he looks like a good free throw shooter. I like
- 5:37Speaker 1: his form is his rotation. Uh, and I think he's
- 5:40Speaker 1: going to go to the line quite a bit this year.
- 5:42Speaker 2: It seems like, Yeah, I think, uh, well, you know,
- 5:46Speaker 2: we're I think we're hopeful there he uh you know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: he depractices it, you know, diligently, and yeah, he doesn't
- 5:56Speaker 2: have he's got good mechanics. And I think it's a
- 5:59Speaker 2: matter of of of of just uh, you know, continued
- 6:03Speaker 2: continued practice, and he's going to get fouled a lot,
- 6:06Speaker 2: so it's important that he makes them.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's good news actually, because that puts you
- 6:11Speaker 1: in the bonus and the double bonus and getting free
- 6:14Speaker 1: points at the at the line of this season. On Folds,
- 6:17Speaker 1: Dan Hurley with us, the Yukon Mets Basketball Coaches Show
- 6:20Speaker 1: continues in a moment on lear Field,
