- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Shaw.
- 0:02Speaker 1: I believe Terris Reed Junior will join us in the
- 0:04Speaker 1: next two segments. The women back at it Wednesday, they
- 0:07Speaker 1: take on Fairly Dickinson at Gampbell the celebration of not
- 0:10Speaker 1: only forty years of Gino Arima and Chris Daly, but
- 0:13Speaker 1: a chance to break the all time wins record in
- 0:16Speaker 1: college basketball. Debbie joined me for that broadcast at six
- 0:19Speaker 1: thirty on Wednesday night here on the Yukon Sports Network.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Speaking of Gino, I know you two have a quite
- 0:25Speaker 1: the relationship and I want to mention something, run something
- 0:28Speaker 1: by you first. I saw this. Gino mention this the
- 0:32Speaker 1: night of your first championship game against San Diego State.
- 0:35Speaker 1: He mentioned it to you being the worst night of
- 0:37Speaker 1: your life potentially, because if you'll win, you're gonna want more,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and if you lose, you're gonna do everything that takes
- 0:42Speaker 1: in your power to get your team back. Well, if
- 0:44Speaker 1: not only if you won one, you've won two, but
- 0:47Speaker 1: what's that like you now that you've won two, in
- 0:49Speaker 1: the hunger to keep doing it over and over and
- 0:52Speaker 1: over again, like he's been chasing it for the last
- 0:54Speaker 1: thirty years.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean what was it like when he told
- 0:56Speaker 2: me that, Bob, And when he told me that, I
- 0:58Speaker 2: was like, why are you telling me that? For the
- 1:00Speaker 2: most part, you've only been telling me like good stuff
- 1:03Speaker 2: that I could use that's been helpful, and what you're
- 1:05Speaker 2: telling me right now is like totally not going to
- 1:07Speaker 2: be helpful.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:11Speaker 2: But I mean, yeah, I mean it's uh. I would
- 1:13Speaker 2: say the part of it that you know, it's just
- 1:17Speaker 2: it's this weird dilemma that you have because like what's
- 1:21Speaker 2: made coaches like Geno so incredible and the best coaches
- 1:27Speaker 2: who they are, is that they do it. They do
- 1:31Speaker 2: it because they do what they do because there's a
- 1:33Speaker 2: sense of purpose that comes with helping the people around you,
- 1:39Speaker 2: young people, the staff members that Geno has had, the people,
- 1:42Speaker 2: the lives that he's impacted as a coach, and the
- 1:45Speaker 2: lives you get to impact as a coach. Is is
- 1:47Speaker 2: what it's. It's the good part. It's the part that
- 1:51Speaker 2: uh that fills your soul. It makes you feel whole
- 1:55Speaker 2: as a human being. So you have that part of it,
- 1:58Speaker 2: But then you do there's a you do get haunted
- 2:03Speaker 2: by the success and the experience of being a national
- 2:07Speaker 2: champion and what that feels like to reach the pinnacle. Uh,
- 2:13Speaker 2: the the elation, the sense of accomplishment that being the
- 2:17Speaker 2: best in the best in the world at what you do,
- 2:20Speaker 2: because uh, I don't think that we would lose to
- 2:23Speaker 2: a university in Spain or or a college in Brazil.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You know, so like you were the when you win
- 2:32Speaker 2: a national championship on the men's and the women's side,
- 2:33Speaker 2: you have the best in the world of what you
- 2:35Speaker 2: do and you just can't imagine the season ending in
- 2:38Speaker 2: any other way once you've experienced that. So I get it.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I'm in a small club of people that could get
- 2:47Speaker 2: what cheat I was talking about.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, Exis and O's wise, I know you
- 2:52Speaker 1: run some very intricate stuff. What Kamani and Luke and
- 2:55Speaker 1: you and Tom put up with, you know, put together
- 2:58Speaker 1: is really good. But I imagine when you've watched Gino runs
- 3:01Speaker 1: a lot of his stuff in your time there, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 1: watching his team practice or even just watching games on television,
- 3:06Speaker 1: are they kind of similar to what you're trying to do?
- 3:09Speaker 2: They are. I think a lot of the concepts are similar.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I would say, what what moved me when when we
- 3:16Speaker 2: weren't good. Uh, and we weren't where we are within
- 3:20Speaker 2: the last two years, two and a half years, as
- 3:23Speaker 2: it started to kind of you know kick in, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 2: on the on on the team that that that lost
- 3:29Speaker 2: to New Mexico State, that actually was a pretty good team,
- 3:32Speaker 2: a five seed in the tournament. Was just the ball movement,
- 3:37Speaker 2: I think, the the commitment to, you know, getting that
- 3:40Speaker 2: ball moving. I think from watching them play and going
- 3:44Speaker 2: over and watching practice and and seeing the like the
- 3:47Speaker 2: the off the ball movement, the the off the ball movement,
- 3:52Speaker 2: the player movement, the ball movement, like the high assists,
- 3:56Speaker 2: the low turnovers. It had an impact on the way
- 3:59Speaker 2: that that we went about playing offense. Obviously, you have
- 4:03Speaker 2: all these different motivations that you use and inspirations, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: from watching all levels of basketball, men's, Women's EuroLeague, WNBA,
- 4:12Speaker 2: NBA Division two NIA. You look for great ideas anyway
- 4:16Speaker 2: anywhere you can find them, but like watching them play
- 4:19Speaker 2: efficiently offensively, ball movement pace, that had an influence on
- 4:26Speaker 2: the way that we teached offense.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Okay, let's step over to your new class. A freshman
- 4:32Speaker 1: that'll be coming in next year. Darius Adams six '
- 4:35Speaker 1: five big guard out of New Jersey, Jacob Furpey out
- 4:38Speaker 1: of Australia sixty six two ten. I believe his nickname
- 4:40Speaker 1: is Tazzi. I like that Brayln Mullins six ' five
- 4:44Speaker 1: out of Indiana. You've got three big guards there, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: then a seven footer from Germany, Erica Raiba. This sounds
- 4:50Speaker 1: like a pretty good class from what I understand.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, high end talent, you know, Bob, high
- 4:56Speaker 2: end talent, and you know, I think, you know, talent
- 5:01Speaker 2: along the lines of you know, the the Jordan Hawkins,
- 5:05Speaker 2: the the Donovan Klingen, the Steph Castle, you know, the
- 5:10Speaker 2: Adamis Sinog. I mean, just like guys that are ready
- 5:12Speaker 2: to come in and and help you right away with
- 5:16Speaker 2: with with early entry NBA level talent across the board.
- 5:21Speaker 2: You know, the big guards that we had great success
- 5:24Speaker 2: with that complement each other. I think Braylan and and
- 5:29Speaker 2: Darius are going to be awesome in the back court together.
- 5:34Speaker 2: You know, Firth, it fits fits us like a glove.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I think he's got a potential cam spencer like comp
- 5:42Speaker 2: is uh Is. It would be perfect for him, I
- 5:46Speaker 2: think in terms of what he could become. Uh and
- 5:49Speaker 2: then Eric Uh you know Eric's offenses. It's uh, there
- 5:53Speaker 2: hasn't been many any offensive players that are coming into college.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Uh with his skill set. He's a he's a scorer,
- 6:01Speaker 2: he's a three point shooter. He's a guy that could
- 6:03Speaker 2: face up, post up, pass handle. You know, we're gonna
- 6:07Speaker 2: help him become an impact defender, maybe rebound this position
- 6:12Speaker 2: even with more ferocity. But this guy is a he's
- 6:15Speaker 2: a weapon on offense as a center. So you know,
- 6:18Speaker 2: we lost so much high end talent the last couple
- 6:20Speaker 2: of years here we really needed, uh, this infusion of
- 6:24Speaker 2: talent coming in.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's good that you're not doing it through
- 6:28Speaker 1: the portal like the old fashioned way. That's that sounds awesome. Finally,
- 6:31Speaker 1: East Texas A and M tomorrow night, they're just coming
- 6:33Speaker 1: off with one over Southern game that had nine tighs,
- 6:36Speaker 1: seven lead changes. They got the game winner with a
- 6:38Speaker 1: minute to go that it was blocked steel block to
- 6:41Speaker 1: close it out. What do you have you seen from
- 6:43Speaker 1: the line so far?
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they play a unique defense which you
- 6:48Speaker 2: don't see a lot. They're gonna switch everything on the
- 6:51Speaker 2: ball and off the ball one through five. So you know,
- 6:54Speaker 2: that's a unique thing that you rarely if ever see, uh,
- 6:59Speaker 2: you know in the college game here, so you know,
- 7:02Speaker 2: a true switching man to man defense. Uh, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 2: really athletic, really aggressive team. And uh, you know, we
- 7:11Speaker 2: we've obviously got to take care of business. You know,
- 7:14Speaker 2: we're looking to play you know, bulletproof basketball here. You know,
- 7:18Speaker 2: we're looking to you know, shut people out from a
- 7:21Speaker 2: defensive standpoint. You know, let's keep a team under thirty
- 7:24Speaker 2: five percent from the field. Let's shoot over fifty percent
- 7:26Speaker 2: from the field at our end. Let's dominate the backboard,
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, let's be high assist, low turnover, and let's
- 7:32Speaker 2: go out and handle our business.
- 7:33Speaker 1: All right, Let's get it done. Six thirty on the
- 7:35Speaker 1: radio tomorrow night, Mike and a way to have the call.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Dan A pleasure.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Thank you, Bob, you man. Appreciate you, brother
- 7:40Speaker 1: You bet you Summing up next, it's Terrace Reed Junior,
- 7:43Speaker 1: as the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show continues in a
- 7:46Speaker 1: minute here on Learfield
