Latest / Mommywood / Navigating Mom Guilt as An Actor
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Mommy Wood. I'm so happy to have you here as
- 0:04always. This episode is another solo
- 0:08episode, and I'm talking about mom guilt, what we all feel, but
- 0:15especially specifically actor mom guilt because it's a
- 0:19different breed. We have so many other things
- 0:22that we have to deal with, and I welcome you to join the mom
- 0:30guilt discussion. I'm going to talk about my
- 0:33experience and things that I've gone through and I hope that
- 0:39this episode helps you feel a little less alone and hopefully
- 0:46at least tell me that you can relate to some of this.
- 0:51I think, I think that mom guilt, that guilt in general for mom is
- 0:56starts with the guilt of just wanting something for yourself,
- 1:03wanting something that's just for you and feeling bad that
- 1:07like we're doing something that doesn't involve our kids.
- 1:11Which I think if we try to think about it from a child's
- 1:17perspective or when we were kids that we didn't always want our
- 1:21parents around, we don't want our parents doting on us all the
- 1:25time. Like that gets annoying.
- 1:27So I try to think of that in a way that like it's healthy for
- 1:30my kid to do things on our own and it's good as a mom to want
- 1:38things for myself. We want moms to want other
- 1:46things besides just to feed our children and pick them up from
- 1:51school and those things. I feel like it's OK to want
- 1:57things, even if that takes time away from being with your kid,
- 2:03as hard as that can be. You know, there's I feel like
- 2:10there's just so much to talk about on this topic.
- 2:13So I hope I'm not going to be full time, but but I think
- 2:20specifically if for actor moms, it's hard to to find the time.
- 2:30Like let's talk about additions. It's hard to find the time to to
- 2:35learn lines and memorize and do like a self tape when your kid
- 2:39is having a meltdown or something to be in the other
- 2:43room and hear a try. Like me trying to work on
- 2:48something and hear my kid having a hard time.
- 2:52That makes me feel bad even though I know her dad is with
- 2:55her. That makes me feel bad for not
- 2:58being there for my daughter even though I'm doing something
- 3:01proactive. And it's like why do I feel that
- 3:04way? I feel like in those situations
- 3:06it's easier for me to go somewhere else or work.
- 3:13I mean, luckily my daughter's at school now, so to work on lines
- 3:18or scenes or the things when she is already away from me, That
- 3:23way when she is home, I don't feel like I'm taking as much
- 3:29time away from her from being with her.
- 3:33So finding that time is important to me during the day
- 3:38when she's already gone from me. I think before having kids, one
- 3:46of the things I struggled with, which I've talked about is the
- 3:49idea that we need to have something stable or whatever for
- 3:55our kids. That it seems like a selfish
- 3:57pursuit to to pursue acting. And again, we need to stop using
- 4:05those terms, pursue acting. I am doing it right now and I
- 4:09need to stop. But to have a career in acting,
- 4:15which is a constant audition process that that seems like a
- 4:25selfish thing to have an unstable career when you have
- 4:29kids. I think as long as you are not
- 4:34putting yourself in such a financial place of burden where
- 4:42it's going to be like, obviously we have to have day jobs.
- 4:46If for me, the way the place I am in my career, I cannot
- 4:53sustain life from my acting paychecks.
- 4:57It's not happening right now. And that's unfortunate and I
- 5:02wish I wasn't there now that I have a child, but it is where
- 5:06I'm at. And I'm but I know that I have
- 5:09to have these other fires burning and day job and things
- 5:16that will keep us afloat that won't make me worry about where
- 5:23I am and being able to take care of my family.
- 5:27And that goes with my husband as well.
- 5:29It's a partnership and both of us being able to do that is
- 5:33really key. I think.
- 5:35I don't think it's selfish for you to show your kid that you
- 5:41are following your dreams, that you are doing something you want
- 5:44to be doing. I don't think it's selfish to
- 5:47show your kid determination, to show your kid that you don't
- 5:53give up when it gets hard. So that's where I am.
- 6:00We talk about, we talk. What am I even saying right now?
- 6:04But another way that mom guilt comes into specifically after
- 6:10mom guilt is the idea of going to work and missing a milestone
- 6:16or missing something with our kids to go on location or to be
- 6:23away from our kids because we're filming something that is really
- 6:31ludicrous if we think about it, is anybody, you know?
- 6:35Yes, of course, other parents and other industries can feel
- 6:39that way regardless of what their industry is.
- 6:42If they have to go out of town for a business trip, maybe
- 6:46they're missing the school play. I don't think we're alone in
- 6:50that. And for whatever reason, having
- 6:53it be that we're filming something makes it somehow
- 6:57selfish. I feel like I, I hear myself
- 7:02continuously bringing up that I think a lot of this actor mom
- 7:09guilt is internalized. I think if we thought of so many
- 7:14of these things from a different career perspective that it would
- 7:20sound silly. It would just it wouldn't be the
- 7:25same. Now there are things that we
- 7:29have to do that other moms don't have to deal with.
- 7:32When you have like a traditional 9 to 5 and comparing ourselves
- 7:39to people who have that and have that stability, that's just
- 7:45going to take you down a whole different path.
- 7:47I think if this entertainment of acting is the career that you
- 7:52have chosen, you shouldn't compare yourself to other moms
- 7:55that have a nine to five job or or any different career.
- 8:02You don't see like lawyers comparing themselves to doctors
- 8:07to engineers to XY and Z like it's just it'll bring you to
- 8:13that compare and despair anyway. Also, childcare isn't just
- 8:22logical, it's emotional. So the guilt around the
- 8:29logistics of having kids of like of having a babysitter, of
- 8:37having somebody else watch your kids so you can do something
- 8:41that gets emotional. Like especially I find like if
- 8:45I'm taking a class and luckily my daughter has been in school
- 8:53or with my husband, but the I so I do feel bad, but like I'm not
- 8:59there when it's my husband or she's at school where I'm like I
- 9:01could be spending time with her. I don't have to be taking this
- 9:05acting class. I could be, but we don't want to
- 9:09could on ourselves. We don't want to should on
- 9:12ourselves is what I say like and it's hard because it feels like
- 9:17it might not be paying off in that moment.
- 9:21But taking classes and doing things for yourself in the long
- 9:25run run will pay off for both you and your kid.
- 9:31Doing things for yourself as a mom is not selfish.
- 9:37Let's just repeat that to ourselves.
- 9:38Doing things for yourself as a mom is not selfish.
- 9:44And just because you can't see the benefits of things right
- 9:50away does not mean that it's not worth it.
- 9:54It doesn't mean that oh, I should have stayed with her
- 9:57because I didn't book this audition.
- 10:00I shouldn't have gone. Like if we thought that, then we
- 10:04shouldn't be in this industry at all.
- 10:08I also feel like we have to prove ourselves, like as actors,
- 10:15we feel like we have to prove ourselves that, like, we're
- 10:17still doing it and that we have to be at a certain place in our
- 10:22career when we have kids and that guilt comes in as well.
- 10:27But again, those are such internal things that we need to
- 10:31just stop our brains from saying.
- 10:34That type of talk just needs to like stop and like the same
- 10:42thing comes in with like when you're not working or you're not
- 10:46booking something. The feeling the guilt of like I
- 10:49should be doing. I should have chosen a different
- 10:52career. I should have done this to stop
- 10:55shooting on yourself. That should be this whole
- 10:57episode mom guilt. Stop shooting on yourself and
- 11:03then we talk. I have to talk about like
- 11:06explaining our careers to our children, although, you know,
- 11:10how many people really care or know that much about what their
- 11:14parents do, am I right? I mean, I don't think you need
- 11:20to explain yourself to anybody. I, I mean, explaining your
- 11:27career to your kid is definitely different, but kind of
- 11:31explaining to them why this matters to you, why it's
- 11:35important to you, why it's something that you love to do
- 11:39and share with them the little wins that you do get.
- 11:43So they can see and shall share the losses because they can see
- 11:50your determination that just because somebody says no, that
- 11:53doesn't mean you stop going for what you want.
- 11:56Now I heard myself say that and thinking as a parent to a child,
- 12:01like just because I said no ice cream, just keep asking.
- 12:04That's what I mean. But you as a parent understand
- 12:08what I mean. I think I'm just going to end it
- 12:12on the fact that guilt and gratitude can both exist in the
- 12:17same plane, feeling guilty about something, but we can also have
- 12:23the gratitude that we are able to pursue.
- 12:29I did it again that we are able to live life as an actor.
- 12:35We are able to again, show our kids this determination, the
- 12:39gratitude that we're able to be artists, be parents, show our
- 12:46kids this, have fun with our kids.
- 12:48There's so many good things that come with being an actor parent
- 12:52that other parents don't get the privilege, the joy to experience
- 12:58and to have with their kids. Our schedules are flexible.
- 13:03Get to see our kids. We get to be with our kids.
- 13:09Our schedules may not be exactly stable necessarily, but having
- 13:18the guilt of that, we can also have the gratitude of what we do
- 13:24have. I hope that that makes sense.
- 13:27Like that we're able to acknowledge the difficulty but
- 13:36also have gratitude for the joyous parts of it.
- 13:42Yes, I think that made sense. I like that.
- 13:46So, so the moral of mom guilt as an actor, actor mom guilt is we
- 13:55have to stop the self talk, the negative self talk.
- 13:59We have to stop thinking that people are.
- 14:03We just need to stop it. We just need to stop.
- 14:05We don't want to shut on ourselves.
- 14:09I feel like I rambled a lot and I do apologize for that, but I
- 14:14think this is just a good reminder of that, not having
- 14:19that negative self talk. And once you start feeling
- 14:22guilty, kind of try and assess why you feel guilty.
- 14:27Is it actually something you should feel guilty about?
- 14:30Or if this were somebody else, what would you say to them?
- 14:34How would you speak to this person or if it wasn't a job in
- 14:40another field, how would you hear it from that perspective?
- 14:46So if you're feeling any mom guilt right now, even just
- 14:50listening to this podcast, I hope that this alleviates some
- 14:54of that for you and that you know that you're not alone when
- 14:58you feel that way, but that, yeah, that you shouldn't.
- 15:06And I know I said we shouldn't shit on ourselves, but don't
- 15:08feel guilty. Don't feel bad about following
- 15:12your passion and living your life as an artist.
- 15:16And I'm going to stop there. So thank you again for being a
- 15:22part of Mommy One. It's always a pleasure.
