- 0:00Our number 2 welcome back Miller in Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 0:03Radio Network. Bill Seals momentarily.
- 0:05Rob Doster field is 68 in about 20 minutes.
- 0:09Let's just clear something up from our number one is there is
- 0:11a little breaking news. Michael Malone, former head
- 0:13coach of the Denver Nuggets when they won a championship in 23, I
- 0:18think 23. He has been named the new head
- 0:22coach in North Carolina. His daughter plays volleyball
- 0:25there, so he'd been around the program.
- 0:27Apparently they love the fact that his relationship with the
- 0:31Joker, with Yokich, Yokich agent is the same agent that got all
- 0:35those guys to Illinois, okay. And they think that that might
- 0:38open up a pathway to more of the European players making their
- 0:42way to North Carolina. So a lot of positives, but the
- 0:46North Carolina job has been filled.
- 0:49Last time he was a college coach and assistant with the Jaspers
- 0:52Manhattan back in 2001. And he's been in the pros since
- 0:56then. He's been in the pros since
- 0:57then. Since he lost his was was he on
- 0:59ESPN? Recently, yes.
- 1:01Yeah, I think so. He's been around there.
- 1:02I was shocked though. His age.
- 1:04How old? 54 I thought he was like in his
- 1:0760s. I I would thought the same
- 1:08thing. Yeah, because he's been around
- 1:10the NBA for a long time. 54 so that was probably the biggest
- 1:13well the surprise that he was named had coach a guy that's not
- 1:16even coaching. But secondly, yeah, I thought he
- 1:18was a little bit older than that.
- 1:20And that connection you meant though mentioned over the when?
- 1:23You connect those dots, you know, it's funny, not funny.
- 1:26It's this guy obviously has some pretty good sources, The guy for
- 1:29The Athletic. I read the piece this morning
- 1:32about, you know, where North Carolina's AT and who are the
- 1:34names out there buying tenant. Vanderbilt has an $11 million
- 1:37buyout, so that's not going to be easy.
- 1:40TJ was mentioned again. Obviously, Billy Donovan was at
- 1:44the top of the list, but they mentioned Malone in the piece
- 1:47and that's the first time I'd seen that connected.
- 1:49So maybe something was percolating there.
- 1:52Let's get the Iowa State. They got some good news
- 1:54basketball wise in the men's program this morning.
- 1:57Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com. He joins us.
- 2:00Jamarian Bateman made it official.
- 2:02He's coming back. Bill Seals, let's start there.
- 2:04Good news for T JS crew. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07He was one that had told a number of us in the the locker
- 2:11room after the after the loss to Tennessee that he was coming
- 2:15back. So not necessarily breaking
- 2:18news, I think for for those on all of the probably the
- 2:21respective boards of our, you know, media beat members and
- 2:25stuff. So Bateman was one Killian
- 2:28Torre, Blake Buchanan. I I think it's looking good for
- 2:32that returning. Well, everybody thought
- 2:34returning nucleus of players. I think all signs are are pretty
- 2:38positive there so far. You know, Kate Kelderman was one
- 2:42that is, is going to is actually in the portal.
- 2:46He's in as a grad transfer. So he was unable to to kind of
- 2:49beat the rush. Well, we'll we'll be able to
- 2:52beat the rush. It opens at midnight tonight
- 2:54after the championship game. So he's in as a grad transfer
- 2:58and say it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up at you and I and I
- 3:02think that'd be a nice move for him and obviously open up some
- 3:05playing time for him and and help Coach Green kind of get
- 3:10that culture set up there in Cedar Falls.
- 3:13Always enjoyed watching Kate at the high school level, and even
- 3:15last year at the end of the season, he was put in there in a
- 3:17couple of big spots and big moments for that squad.
- 3:20I think, yeah, an absolutely great fit for Kelderman.
- 3:23So what 6 scholarships often, Bill, can you just kind of set
- 3:26the blueprint here kind of what they're going to be looking for,
- 3:29what type of players, position groups and and maybe where the
- 3:32most of their money is going to be spent like if you're looking
- 3:34at the big ticket items. So just set up the blueprint of
- 3:37what this men's basketball offseason and the portals going
- 3:39to look like. Yeah, I had that.
- 3:42I had something up trend on my site last week kind of taking a
- 3:46deep dive into that 2627 roster. As you mentioned the the
- 3:51openings right now, they had five seniors exhaust their
- 3:54eligibility, one so far in the portal with Kelderman.
- 3:59That's a total of 6. Still don't really know Milan
- 4:03Moshilovich, if he's going to, if he's going to go through this
- 4:06whole draft process, pull himself out, I think he's kind
- 4:11of the wild card right now. But at least initially at this
- 4:15point, 6 openings scholarship wise, they've got a a class of 4
- 4:20coming in, freshman and Jackson Kiss, Christian Wiggins, Yusuf
- 4:25Gray and Dorian Ronaldo, Komlan Gray, I think that injury
- 4:31suffered A torn labrum in his shoulder late in his senior
- 4:36year. So I almost wonder with him if
- 4:38he might, they might be overly cautious with him and get him a
- 4:43red shirt as a freshman. So that leaves three and I think
- 4:46each of those three with Kiss Wiggins, Ronaldo comb when I
- 4:50think those all three of those guys come in with high
- 4:52aspirations and certainly guys looking to impact that game
- 4:57night rotation is freshman. I'm I'm really getting some
- 5:02chilly and Torre vibes with Ronaldo comb when I think we're
- 5:06beyond that. You know that the French
- 5:09Connection there with him. He's been competing at a high
- 5:13level with that Nike EYBEL like the Scholastic League this year
- 5:19for Spire Academy. He's been on national TVA lot.
- 5:23He was over the weekend. I think it was on ESPNU they
- 5:27were playing. So I'm getting some serious
- 5:30positive vibes on him on his 610.
- 5:33I think they'll put some put some weight on him, some L BS
- 5:36over the offseason program and I think he's someone that to
- 5:41really look out for. I'm I'm I'm really optimistic
- 5:44about him. And you know, Jackson kiss is a
- 5:47guy too. You look at his his frame
- 5:496768230 kind of that Joshua Jefferson type of build.
- 5:55And I think he's kind of a Jack of all trade trades.
- 5:58He can, he can shoot the ball well from outside.
- 6:01I think he also is a guy that can play with his back to the
- 6:04basket and post up inside. So anyway, I'm that freshman, I
- 6:09think that reviews very positive on that one.
- 6:12As far as you asked with the portal, what I'm hearing so far
- 6:16is, is, is 2 and it's probably the two obvious spots.
- 6:21You would think as you look at who left, they're going to
- 6:24target a point guard and they're going to target a power forward,
- 6:28someone in the Lipsy and Jefferson mold.
- 6:30I know I don't think that a huge surprise there.
- 6:33You know, Trevi and Carson out of West Des Moines Valley, he
- 6:37hit the portal. I think being a, a West Des
- 6:39Moines Valley guy, you know, eyebrows raised right away with
- 6:43him entering. I think that would be a a good
- 6:46fit perhaps. And then you look at any number
- 6:50of guys at at that four man position.
- 6:54But with, you know, with the portal opening at midnight
- 6:56tonight, I think that we'll start seeing some names pop out.
- 7:00So, you know, it seems like the national guy is on on 3/24, 7:00
- 7:05and all of them do a great job, I think covering the portal and
- 7:09the agents talk to all those guys too.
- 7:11It seems like the agents control this transfer portal process
- 7:16even more. And you'll, you'll see Iowa
- 7:18State link to quite a few more guys as we move forward here in
- 7:23the in the next week or two and you'll start seeing these guys
- 7:26get on campus for visits. What about Rancic's son at
- 7:30Colorado? Big kid.
- 7:31He's a four, I think. What about him is?
- 7:34Can you connect some dots there or no?
- 7:36Well, I, I, I, I certainly would like to.
- 7:39I mean, we, we all watched what Martine did with you, Stacy,
- 7:44several, several years ago. You know, Martine's an exec in
- 7:48the NBA now and a huge basketball family.
- 7:54You know, when when Colorado was in Ames earlier this season, I
- 7:58had a little conversation with Steve Barnes as well.
- 8:01He was an assistant under you Stacy.
- 8:03And, and Barnes is a guy who's kept in touch with that ranchic
- 8:07family over the years. And he happened to have tickets
- 8:10for Sebastian from Sebastian that night.
- 8:14So but yeah, you mean you you look a little closer though.
- 8:18And and really beyond the family connection, I'm not sure there's
- 8:21a whole lot of ties to him to Iowa State anymore.
- 8:24But I'll tell you what, for a guy that's what six 10611
- 8:29They're they're looking to replace some scoring, a lot of
- 8:33scoring inside with Joshua Jefferson.
- 8:37Even Mulder, Eric Mulder didn't contribute a whole lot, but
- 8:40that's a big man scholarship that's come open from him as
- 8:43well. So I think it makes a lot of
- 8:45sense. But you know, we'll we'll see
- 8:48defensively if if they kind of like it as they do a dive into
- 8:52his tape, if they like what they see there.
- 8:54But that'd be, I think that a lot of Cyclones fans could get
- 8:57on board with with that one. One guy coming back down, Plato,
- 9:01we saw spurts, right? Just those moments like you, you
- 9:04can see it and maybe the game slowing down a little bit going
- 9:07into his sophomore year, how big of a jump do you anticipate it's
- 9:10going to take work? I understand all that part of
- 9:12it. But when you look at played,
- 9:14it's certainly like the the molding that you can do with a
- 9:16guy like that at 6 foot 11. Well, and I, I think the way
- 9:20Iowa State plays next season too, they're going to need more
- 9:23from him offensively. You know, we, we saw what he
- 9:26could do defensively and that's only going to get better with
- 9:29the, with the, the weight room, the strength and, and.
- 9:36There goes Bill. We'll reconnect with Bill Seals.
- 9:39Here's Bill. I don't know if you can hear us.
- 9:41We have lost you. We're hanging up and redialing
- 9:44you. So we'll get back to Bill Seals.
- 9:46Coming up, more on Iowa State. Just want to pick his brain.
- 9:49I don't think that this was going to be the case, but I'm
- 9:51going to ask Bill, I mean, is there a Jefferson got paid a lot
- 9:55of money last year to come back to Iowa State.
- 9:57Is that money still going to be available?
- 9:59Are they going to allocate it differently?
- 10:01Are they going to go for a big name?
- 10:02Let's get to Bill Seals. Bill, you're in the middle of
- 10:05your answer and for whatever reason you cut out, so finish
- 10:08your point please. Yeah, as far as as far as play
- 10:11to goes, I think there's a lot more offensively for him that's
- 10:15still untapped. And really it they didn't need a
- 10:18whole lot from him, a whole lot of diversity and a whole lot of
- 10:23offense from him. They got it from from Taman from
- 10:27Joshua Milan, but I think with with Dom, there's a there's a
- 10:32whole lot more to his game that we haven't seen yet.
- 10:35He's got a smooth outside shot. He didn't really shoot much from
- 10:39the outside. It was mainly kind of a a back
- 10:42to the basket post up and and crash the boards rim run kind of
- 10:47guy. But I think you'll see more out
- 10:49of him offensively. So he he's another one Tran.
- 10:52I I agree. I think that him coming back is
- 10:56going to be a huge, huge deal. He's another one confirmed he
- 10:59will be returning as well. Just in kind of in those close
- 11:03quarters in the locker room after the Tennessee game.
- 11:06Jefferson was paid handsomely and then deservedly so.
- 11:10I'm not sure where that ranks nationally, but there's a
- 11:13seemingly a big pool of money, and I'm just going to assume
- 11:17that that money is still going to be there for this year.
- 11:19Will they go after a big name, do you think, Bill, or will they
- 11:22try and, you know, spread that, spread that money out over a
- 11:25couple of players? Well, I think that that they're
- 11:29they're not needing, they're not needing to go after a whole lot
- 11:32of guys in the portal. As I mentioned with the at least
- 11:352 is kind of what I've heard stands to reason.
- 11:40Milan coming back senior year, he's going to get a nice raise
- 11:44as well as those other guys in the the other guys in the in the
- 11:47rotation, Killian, Bateman, Plato, Buchanan, they'll take
- 11:52care of them. I'm sure that they'll get a
- 11:53little bit of a bump and then, you know, it almost makes you
- 11:56wonder too. Obviously T JS already said he's
- 11:59coming back. He's committed for the long
- 12:01term, but behind the scenes, maybe there's some lobbying
- 12:06there for from TJ to get a little bit of a bump team wise
- 12:10and in Rev sharing and what they're going to have to spend
- 12:14moving forward and, you know, in the end of this offseason.
- 12:17So maybe a little bump in that as well to to kind of go out and
- 12:21and they're going to need some scoring.
- 12:23And these these aren't just going to be like situational
- 12:27guys and, you know, filling out a rotation.
- 12:29We need an an eighth guy or a ninth guy.
- 12:33These these are going to be impact type of players in the
- 12:35portal they're going after. I think so they they will
- 12:38command you would think they would command a premium in in in
- 12:43what they're going to collect and Rev share.
- 12:45Tim Buckley is one of the two assistant coaches that need to
- 12:48be hired. He comes in, been all over the
- 12:50place and obviously a well known name.
- 12:52He was with us at UNLV. What can you tell us about
- 12:55Buckley and what his role is going to be here with the two
- 12:57new assistants they needed? Yeah, I think defensive
- 13:01background is one thing that really stands out to me about
- 13:05him. He played at Cincinnati.
- 13:08They, you know, they were a team obviously gave Iowa State some
- 13:12fits this season, knocked off the Cyclones and even before
- 13:16that he was at South Carolina and that was a South Carolina
- 13:20team. I believe that 2324 team that
- 13:24led the SEC in scoring defense, held teams.
- 13:27I believe it was 66.4 points per game was the total.
- 13:31So I, I think it is most recent stops as an assistant coach.
- 13:36It's been it's been that a guy comes from the defensive teams
- 13:42and I think that lends itself and Jr. was one of the top Jr.
- 13:45Blount was one of the top defensive guys under TJ.
- 13:49They'll replace that with another veteran with Buckley and
- 13:53I think that it's good. He's been a head coach as well.
- 13:56He's been, it was a Division One head coach at Ball State for
- 14:00looked like 7 seasons. So yeah, a lot, a lot of
- 14:03experience, a lot of experience at A at a high level.
- 14:07And and I think he's kind of fits that mold.
- 14:10You know, maybe maybe that well, the defensive chops that Blount
- 14:13had, but then also, well, Kyle Green, he he was also a
- 14:19defensive coach as well out of the architect of that.
- 14:21But I think you look at Buckley, you look at Kyle Green and kind
- 14:25of the same mold, the guys that are that, you know, veterans in
- 14:28the profession and and had been at this a long time.
- 14:32Bill Seals joining us football, TC anymore basketball.
- 14:35Dan McCartney was in Ames over the weekend hanging out I
- 14:40talking to Rogers, talking to the team.
- 14:42It's it's great to see McCartney, who meant so much to
- 14:45this program really, you know, turned it around after
- 14:47languishing. And that's what it was doing for
- 14:50the old timers out there to have to remind him of that.
- 14:52But it wasn't always good news when it came to Iowa State
- 14:55football. But McCartney turned it around.
- 14:57Obviously, he's still very well thought of in Ames and holds the
- 15:01program very close and by. And by the way, for you, if you
- 15:04missed it, if you're an Iowa State fan, Dan McCartney was on
- 15:06with Heather and Alec this morning on their show.
- 15:08You can find the podcast and listen to that if you're if
- 15:12you're so desire. But really good piece there
- 15:14apparently. But your thoughts on McCartney
- 15:15being back in town? Well, I think it's a shrewd move
- 15:19for a new head coach and Jimmy Rogers, you know, granted that
- 15:23Jimmy has spent a lot of time certainly at at South Dakota
- 15:28State was a head coach, spent some time in the Midwest.
- 15:31But coming coming into Iowa State after a year at Washington
- 15:35State, he he did bring a couple bring in a couple of in state
- 15:39guys to his coaching staff. I think that was a good move and
- 15:43in manage and managed who was the safeties coach?
- 15:49And then Seth Hesner sees a Mason City guy coming in as the
- 15:54tight ends coach. So they've got a couple of guys
- 15:57on this staff within state ties, but always a shrewd move though.
- 16:01And and then and to bring him in for the coaches clinic and and
- 16:05get Coach Mack in front of those in state guys and, and just, you
- 16:09know, remind them that Iowa State still, you know, they're
- 16:12still going to be a big time program with Matt Campbell and
- 16:16it at Penn State and they Jimmy Rogers And it was a very good
- 16:21move for for him again that to get coach Mack in.
- 16:24One guy off the board as it comes to recruiting for spring
- 16:27football, that's Landon Bloom, who commits to Penn State get
- 16:30from over on the West side of the state and is going to be
- 16:33going out there with Campbell. Is it going to take a while?
- 16:36I mean, we're kind of used to what the calendar is for
- 16:38football recruiting. And do you anticipate with
- 16:41having to grow these relationships and a lot of guys
- 16:44from outside the area that maybe the recruiting for the Class of
- 16:472027 going to take a little bit longer this year?
- 16:52And we've lost Bill again. Oh, no.
- 16:54Yeah, I've gone. Hey, how do you say this?
- 16:56Did you Declan Haling, Haying. I'm looking at him.
- 17:00He's got offers from everywhere. Arkansas.
- 17:02He's a football player, an offensive lineman.
- 17:05I think he's a central Iowa kid from Des Moines, Nebraska, Iowa
- 17:09State, Kansas, Maryland, northwestern Tennessee, Iowa, K
- 17:12State, Mizzou, Minnesota. I'll get Bill back in here, see
- 17:16if he's got any information on that.
- 17:18Then with get the Rob Doster as we will talk to Rob Field of 68,
- 17:22Field of 68 for Rob Moore on the national championship coming up
- 17:27here in about O 125 or thereabouts.
- 17:30We'll then get Trent's plays of the day.
- 17:33Decent slate of baseball tonight.
- 17:35The point spread is shifting. I don't want to say
- 17:38significantly, but when everybody moves from 7 down to 6
- 17:421/2, that kind of is a noteworthy move.
- 17:45Everybody's 6 1/2 on the championship game tonight.
- 17:47No more sevens. No more sevens and a half.
- 17:49Yeah. Declan Haying, HEY.
- 17:52Name sounds familiar? He's an offensive lineman with a
- 17:56unbelievable. Now he's a class of 28, so we're
- 17:59getting a little rid of ourselves, but my God.
- 18:02I'm not quite in football mode. Yet yeah, I know, I know.
- 18:04I don't blame. You.
- 18:05Yes, he Hying. Hying that's how you say his.
- 18:08Name. So his dad played basketball at
- 18:10you and I? OK.
- 18:11He was from New Hampton and yeah, I know the family and his
- 18:15sister. It would be Declans aunt Yeah is
- 18:20really good friends with my step sister.
- 18:21So yes know the family. Yeah, it's haying.
- 18:23Haying. Yes, is how it's pronounced.
- 18:25Yeah, Big kid plays a Des boy Christian.
- 18:26That's where he plays. Yes, Yep.
- 18:29Did you you did a game fight tomorrow And Chris, did you not?
- 18:31Nope. Maybe it was basketball.
- 18:32I don't know. I thought you.
- 18:33Not football, though. No, I haven't.
- 18:34Haven't seen them. But yeah, he's got a good offer
- 18:36list and God, I'll say, got some bloodlines.
- 18:38And I think Dad's still maybe an inch or two taller than him.
- 18:41It's close. Wow, Declan's going to probably
- 18:43pass him here. Pretty.
- 18:43Quickly, probably, yeah. He's got a couple of years,
- 18:4565280 Currently a couple of former Iowa State players in the
- 18:48portal. Omaha Palu is looking for
- 18:50another home. Yes, after two years at Wake
- 18:52Forest, had a little. Success.
- 18:54Yeah. What about what?
- 18:55What? What's your relationship with
- 18:57Kyle Green there when he was at Iowa State?
- 18:59I wonder. Oh, that's an intriguing 1.
- 19:01Just trying to, you know, connect some dots there.
- 19:04And you remember JT Rock who didn't play, Yes, Yeah, he went
- 19:07down to New Mexico. He's in the portal coming off a
- 19:106.3 rebound season. Back to the portal for team
- 19:14number. Three, he was going to be the
- 19:15guy, wasn't he? He was, well, C71, you know,
- 19:18gets your attention, right? Gets your attention, Gets your
- 19:20attention. It hasn't worked out.
- 19:23We'll see if it does. Is he a South Dakota kid?
- 19:24Was. He a Yes, that's what I thought.
- 19:26All right, Rob Doster is next. Apologies for Bill Self.
- 19:30Bill Self, Bill Seals as gremlins with his phone, but we
- 19:35got most of the stuff in with Bill Doster.
- 19:37Next. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 19:39Radio Network Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 19:42Coming up on 130. Top of the hour off the bench,
- 19:45Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain, 2 until 5:00 and then a 5:00
- 19:49pregame. What's a long pregame?
- 19:52But it starts the Westwood One coverage of the national
- 19:57championship men's basketball coming up here at 5:00, the pre
- 20:01game show starts. Speaking of that, well, we know
- 20:04it's really butting up close to your bedtime and dinner time.
- 20:08Dinner time, yes. Do you?
- 20:10No, I'll get through this. You'll get through the game,
- 20:13sure, but correct me if I'm wrong, you're not a 1 shining
- 20:17moment guy. No, I usually see it the next.
- 20:19Well, I always see it the next morning.
- 20:21Yeah, see, but you're not. No, I'm not staying up, going
- 20:23out of my way to stay up for that.
- 20:24Yeah. Is it as good as it used to be?
- 20:27I. Mean does it?
- 20:29Kind of mean more back in the I don't know.
- 20:32It's still, I get it. It's still.
- 20:33It's a part of it, sure. It's an important part, yeah.
- 20:36And a piece that I just. I enjoy it so much.
- 20:39I do, too. It's well produced.
- 20:41They went away from the traditional song for a while.
- 20:43They come back, but it just, I, I got sent 1 today from like 87.
- 20:47Did you? Yeah, 'cause Kevin Gamble showed
- 20:49up in it. So yeah, got that from a
- 20:51Hawkeye. Fred.
- 20:52It's just part of it and we'll see.
- 20:54Alvaro Fulgaris, right? You know, would think he's got
- 20:57to be a part. Has to be.
- 20:58And he knocked off the defending champion.
- 20:59The three pointer, maybe even the dunk in there against
- 21:01Nebraska. Maybe he might be in there
- 21:03twice. He could certainly the play
- 21:04against Florida, for sure, for sure.
- 21:07We'll be in there, Steve Mayerfeld from Hampton.
- 21:11I mean, that'll live forever, right?
- 21:12His feet up in the air. His one of his players, his
- 21:15kicking his feet like he's trying to get away.
- 21:17He just sure passion and joy. What year was that?
- 21:21O2 or 01/01/01. O2 No.
- 21:24O2 Yeah, 'cause. It was it O2.
- 21:26It was either O1 or O2. It was one of those years it
- 21:28was, oh, I do have a note for you.
- 21:30After Bill was mentioning Trayvion, Carson, ND State 63
- 21:36and again called a ton of his games at the high school level.
- 21:40So I had somebody mentioned to me back in January, February
- 21:46about that connection with Iowa State that they already knew
- 21:51that that was going to be something at minimum they're
- 21:53going to target. Not that they'd offer to him or
- 21:54anything like that, but. What position?
- 21:56He's a point guard or he can playoff the ball too.
- 21:59But yeah, good assist rate shot it well.
- 22:01This. Was he on those Valley
- 22:02Championship teams or one of? Them the first one.
- 22:05First one, if memory serves. Yeah, he was there for the first
- 22:08one. He's 63.
- 22:11Great defender. Well, that fits.
- 22:13Yeah, exactly like you're looking to connect dots.
- 22:16These dots have been connected, I've heard for a while.
- 22:19Doesn't mean that it's imminent or anything like that, but I
- 22:21would anticipate if I'm putting betting odds out, yeah, he is a
- 22:24prohibitive favorite. He's going to end up in Ames.
- 22:26Do you think we will hear from an Iowa State or an Iowa signee
- 22:30first? Not that it matters.
- 22:34Right. I mean because.
- 22:36Between those two schools, it's always a complication.
- 22:38Yes, I mean, I would take a guess that it would be Carson
- 22:40just because like I said, I heard this a while back that
- 22:44that that probably be the easiest one that the wheels
- 22:46already in motion, that kind of thing that that's going to
- 22:48happen. So I guess because I had that
- 22:51bit of information, I'd probably point that direction.
- 22:54And Iowa State needs a lot more guys.
- 22:56I mean they have what, 6 scholarships open bunch?
- 22:58Yeah, I think, yeah. With with Calderman now gone
- 23:00too. So I think it's up to six guys.
- 23:01So they can be a little bit maybe more freewheeling of the
- 23:05offers that they're going to be throwing out there.
- 23:06And and also probably being able to put pressure on guys too
- 23:10saying, hey, we got this many spots, this is where we're going
- 23:12to go and making that one. When we're talking about though,
- 23:15top top flight guys like those guys that are showing up in the
- 23:18top 150 list of the transfer portal, those are the guys
- 23:21probably going to take a little bit longer unless they already
- 23:24know what other nugget. 2001, by the way, for Hampton. 2005 You
- 23:31know we hear these well, no contact.
- 23:32Yep, no contact. Kenzie Hare had her no contact.
- 23:35So in the past, the past couple of years, that led us to believe
- 23:39that they already do their destiny, right, Right.
- 23:41Apparently that's not the case anymore.
- 23:43Some of them just don't. They want to do it on
- 23:44themselves, right? Just leave me alone.
- 23:46What that means is contact my agent, right?
- 23:49That's what that's to do. If we go back to our first
- 23:51conversation of the day where we think we have a handle on what
- 23:56this portal is and what we kind of know about the portal from
- 24:00our seats, and then it just changes again.
- 24:03And now this no contact order, which for the first couple of
- 24:06years they know where they're going is now I don't know where
- 24:09I'm going potentially just leave me alone.
- 24:11You deal with my agent deal who put the offers in front of me
- 24:14with my agent and then we'll decide let's just goes back to
- 24:17the semi final Michigan yes my mom didn't want me to play my
- 24:21agent didn't want me to go in Linda Borg says you know what
- 24:24the hell is he I'm going in by the way Rob Doster was scheduled
- 24:27to join us. He's doing a little something on
- 24:29his channel with the North Carolina.
- 24:31We got this funny during the break before we reached out to
- 24:34get lined him up. We got a tweet from our buddy
- 24:36Jay Scott to tweets at us all the time says always you're not
- 24:39getting Doster. He's on his, he's on his YouTube
- 24:41thing doing the doing a recap. And he was right not.
- 24:44Going to get wrong because I I see it right now on my Twitter
- 24:46feed and are you watching it? Doster and Goodman and Tyler
- 24:50Hansborough. Pretty good crew.
- 24:52Yeah, there was Hansborough's name was mentioned for a while.
- 24:55Really. Well, I mean, I think probably
- 24:57if you had to go all, you know, take far down the list if enough
- 24:59guys decide not to take the offer.
- 25:02I don't know, but I like the. I'd like to hire, on the
- 25:05surface, the fact that he's got such a great relationship with
- 25:09Yokich, Yokich's agents, the guy that's bringing all these EUR
- 25:12over the country, it does make some sense from that regard.
- 25:16So how do you see the game tonight?
- 25:17Let's you and I handle it. So we start with just the
- 25:21freight train that is Michigan. And if Michigan plays at that
- 25:24level and they knock down 8910 threes, game over.
- 25:29So I look at it the other perspective from from the Hurley
- 25:31perspective, probably most importantly, what if?
- 25:33You can get him in foul trouble, that'd be good.
- 25:35You start there absolutely and I have a feeling because well,
- 25:40back to what I first started with the three-point shooting,
- 25:43you can't let Michigan get comfortable out there.
- 25:45Yukon does a great job. They.
- 25:46Didn't let Illinois get comfortable.
- 25:47Absolutely. And Yukon, that's one thing that
- 25:49they every year under Hurley, they do a great job of running
- 25:52you off the three-point line. I think this is going to be a
- 25:55game where Yukon is going to be content to let Michigan throw it
- 26:00inside Blender, Borger not out there with Mara, with Johnson,
- 26:04with those guys. They're going to be content
- 26:06because what happens when you get a boat, bunch of post
- 26:08touches, the game slows down. It comes into that low
- 26:12possession type of game and I think that's the only path for U
- 26:15Conn. I don't think there is another
- 26:17path. They need this thing to be a
- 26:19grinder, A slugfest. Slow it down and they'll be
- 26:22content with that. You want to throw it in
- 26:23tomorrow, do it. I go back to when they played
- 26:26Purdue a couple years ago in the national championship game.
- 26:29Now that game, what did Edie have?
- 26:32He had, is it 35 or 37 something ridiculous that season that he
- 26:38was obviously incredible in that national championship game.
- 26:41However it was, we're not going to let the other Purdue guards
- 26:46be able to knock down those shots.
- 26:47And because of that, that's kind of what I point to it and I look
- 26:50at. That's a game plan.
- 26:51I'm bringing up the box score here.
- 26:52Yeah, Edie had 37 points. Good memory on you in that game.
- 26:56But they also had Kligen inside that they could go one-on-one.
- 26:59They don't have that same kind of guy in the middle or he's a
- 27:02good player, he's a nice player. He also have the connection
- 27:06where he started at Michigan. He got that angle to it too.
- 27:09Why didn't that work out? Do you Do you remember that
- 27:11story well? Was it coaching?
- 27:14Early in his career, I mean those Michigan teams.
- 27:15Were bad bad. But was it coaching that he left
- 27:17when Howard got the axe? Probably Juan Howard.
- 27:22What a mess. Did you watch any of the Fab 5
- 27:24alternate? Cash.
- 27:25I did not. I didn't.
- 27:26Either. And you know what?
- 27:27I heard good things. Did you?
- 27:28I and I wanted. To read good things I didn't
- 27:30hear. And I never did.
- 27:31Likewise. It was flip.
- 27:33Oh yeah, because half time took the kids upstairs to put them to
- 27:36bed. So oh, and that was the other
- 27:38part. So I get up there all right,
- 27:42maybe Arizona's got a little bit of run.
- 27:44All right Got the game recorded flip it on and right when we
- 27:47flip it on and get back to the our room and going to watch the
- 27:50back half of the game and are we going to start the second-half
- 27:54go right to live TV. It was 7447 at the time Oh gosh
- 27:58there it goes is that the real score?
- 28:00That's the real score. That's the real score.
- 28:02So I don't think we need to go back and watch the 1st 8
- 28:04minutes. So this one, the way things were
- 28:06deconstructed, just watch it out from there.
- 28:08But I think that's a game plan for U Conn grind it out, let
- 28:12Mari get his. If Johnson goes off, so be it.
- 28:16Don't let though, obviously the guys, like we've seen in the
- 28:21past, Mckenney, you can't let him.
- 28:22Get on. Oh, he's good players, right?
- 28:24He's a good player off the bench.
- 28:26Roddy GAIL, who hasn't shot a great this year but we know can
- 28:28shoot it some shots, Yeah. Don't let him get 3.
- 28:30He didn't make a shot against. He made a bit.
- 28:32Was it against Iowa? Yes, he did.
- 28:34Yeah, I thought so, yes. Was it a three or?
- 28:37But he did something shot against Iowa.
- 28:38Late in the. Game.
- 28:39That might be Ben Mccullum's best coaching job, staying close
- 28:42against this Michigan team. If it would have shot at him.
- 28:44A team that got to a Sweet 16 for the first time in 27 years
- 28:48and the lead 8 for the first time in 39 years.
- 28:50His best coaching job was giving them a shot against was that.
- 28:53Senior Day? Or was there one more after
- 28:55that? It was the late. 2nd to last
- 28:57game because it was Nebraska. Nebraska.
- 29:00And went to overtime in that one.
- 29:01So that's, I think the game played, the blueprint for
- 29:04Connecticut to hang around to give themselves a shot, let them
- 29:08go inside, don't let them shoot 3 pointers.
- 29:10And then you need to get something from the other end
- 29:13too. You know, solo ball.
- 29:14I thought that's about as good as solo ball.
- 29:16He's hurt, yes, yes, he's been playing injured for a while, but
- 29:19I thought he was really good against Illinois.
- 29:21But I think he's like questionable tonight.
- 29:23Oh really? Yes, it got it.
- 29:26Either re injured what it was in an ankle.
- 29:28He's questionable tonight. That's because he said he
- 29:32finished the game on adrenaline and that's the only reason he
- 29:35was in there at the end or played as many minutes as he
- 29:38did. Mullins was great in the first
- 29:40half, yeah. Did nothing until very late in
- 29:42the second. But then when he needed the
- 29:44shot, there was, you know, there's speculation that he's
- 29:46going, he's going pro. He's tall, could shoot, he could
- 29:50shoot. You just park him on a bench and
- 29:52let him grow up a little bit crazy because he's the right
- 29:55age, right? Absolutely.
- 29:56They love their 18 year olds. And I also look at Daddy Hurley,
- 30:00you know my affinity for Dusty May, Big Dusty May guy over
- 30:03here. Yeah.
- 30:05But Daddy Hurley as just unlikable of a figure.
- 30:08Well, you know, did you see his wife on TV a bunch over the last
- 30:11couple of days? When you find out about Danny
- 30:14Hurley the person and how useless he is, in some ways it
- 30:19reminds me of me. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:21And that that grew a. Little bit for you.
- 30:23Yeah, that's what I mean. Listening to his wife and just
- 30:26how inept he is at home because, you know, it impressed me.
- 30:30But God, he can coach basketball.
- 30:32And that's the thing, he's going to have a game plan.
- 30:34Will it work? We'll see, but it's not that
- 30:37he's going to be out coached on the sideline.
- 30:39No, there's not going to be something.
- 30:41They're going to have a plan. Will the team execute?
- 30:44We'll see about that and come back to Hurley.
- 30:47And now what's the record? It's asinine 18.
- 30:50Against the spread it's ridiculous. 18 and one.
- 30:52You're right. Last 19 games in the tournament.
- 30:5418 and one against the spread. 18 and one, yeah.
- 30:58It just, it's ridiculous. It is.
- 31:00It is completely. So for that reason, you're
- 31:03snapping up the and again, the number's gone down.
- 31:05It's now 6 1/2 if you want, and seven, you snooze, you lose.
- 31:08Is it still, still 6 1/2? There's been no buy back.
- 31:11It's all six and a halfs everywhere.
- 31:12Yet the betting public is on Michigan.
- 31:15I saw that a little bit earlier. Let's take a re look at that.
- 31:19Overall, 70% of the money and 59% of the tickets are on this.
- 31:23But let's individualize things and let's go to our friends at
- 31:26Circa and see the betting splits there also with the caveat,
- 31:31Derek Stevens, a Michigan guy, they get a lot of business from
- 31:35Michigan clientele, 69% of the money and 58% of the bets there
- 31:40also. So basically what we're kind of
- 31:41seeing on the board also at Circa, no one has a sharp book,
- 31:46but the public is on the Wolverines.
- 31:48Yeah, I'll be grabbing the points in this one.
- 31:50Will you play the total or anything like that?
- 31:52Nothing total wise. For for UConn to win the game,
- 31:55what do they what does the score need to be if they let Michigan
- 31:58get to what they're cooked 75? Yeah, that, that's a good, I
- 32:02think cut off point anything I was going to say like low 70s.
- 32:06Hold them to 75, you're in the game.
- 32:08Can't win a game 8582 No no. I don't think so either.
- 32:12I think they got to hold them under 75 to win the game because
- 32:16again, it comes down to possessions and they're going to
- 32:18slow things down. 1 clock, hopefully make Michigan do the
- 32:21same kind of thing. Can we get a good?
- 32:23Game. I was just thinking this exact
- 32:24same thing as you were because Saturday, especially the the
- 32:29late game, we had such high expectations.
- 32:32It was going to be a classic. We're going to watch this game
- 32:34and talk about this game for years to come.
- 32:36It was awful. It was awful.
- 32:38Go Peter game. And even.
- 32:41It was about the one Wildcat that did.
- 32:42Friday night, the South Carolina UConn game wasn't.
- 32:45Good. No, it was terrible.
- 32:47It was physical and it was a tough watch.
- 32:49The Texas USLA game, it was relatively close, wasn't a fun
- 32:53watch. The best game we got was UConn,
- 32:57Illinois. And are you going to be bouncing
- 32:59your grandkids on your knee talking about that one?
- 33:00No, I'm not. Absolutely.
- 33:02There won't be grandkids, sadly. No, come on, Kale's going to get
- 33:05going. That's my only hope.
- 33:06Kale's going to get going here. Yeah, he's got a Mary is Better
- 33:10half. Well, she graduates from
- 33:11medical. Well, she's going to be a vet.
- 33:13So this is yours. They're coming, by the way, for
- 33:16my last day and I'm so pumped up about.
- 33:17Awesome. How about my son and his gal?
- 33:20They're kale. Yes, vegetable.
- 33:23And his gal, Sage. Well, look at that.
- 33:27Yeah. Good connection.
- 33:28Oh, they. Are I like him a lot, you know,
- 33:30And I like her a lot. They're very fun to hang out
- 33:32with when we're out there. And yeah, get her done.
- 33:35We need to see Papa Kenny over. There I would love it but but
- 33:38guessing there's some probably some some school yes that's
- 33:42student loans to get through. But I hope it happens.
- 33:44I hope I'm bouncing my grandkid on my.
- 33:46Knee, but not talking about Illinois.
- 33:48I had a run right 80 to 1. So here's what I did.
- 33:51I bet 200 on Yukon. Yep.
- 33:52So I cashed there. OK, I got some, put some money
- 33:55in my in my account. And then I bet a whole bunch of
- 33:58I've got Yukon and I've got Michigan to the Carolina
- 34:00Hurricanes, to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars and
- 34:04Colorado Avalanche. Well, we have a little time here
- 34:06and I know there are people like myself that is getting ready to
- 34:10turn the page and get ready for our next sports that we talk
- 34:13about a ton. So give me, give me your hockey
- 34:16time. As to how many teams can win the
- 34:18Stanley Cup? Yeah, give me give me that list
- 34:20of teams that can win it all because this is the way my
- 34:26simple non hockey brain looks at it.
- 34:27Yeah, they all can because we've seen it happen in the past and
- 34:30that's just how I see hockey. But the teams that are playing.
- 34:33Don't like the way Colorado's playing.
- 34:35They've got the best record in the league.
- 34:36I don't like the way they're going to the playoffs.
- 34:38I do like the way Dallas and I do like the way Minnesota.
- 34:42We're going to talk a lot to Joe O'Donnell in the weeks ahead.
- 34:44Absolutely, because I think he's going to be working for a while
- 34:48out of the West. I see three teams and it's the
- 34:50three teams in the Central. I don't like anybody.
- 34:52I don't like Vegas, I don't like Anaheim.
- 34:55I think there are ways away yet. I think it's Minnesota, Colorado
- 34:59and Dallas in the East. Buffalo is a team that they
- 35:03never make the playoffs. They're the laughingstock of the
- 35:06league. They got the best record in the
- 35:07East. At least they did going into
- 35:08the. Weekend they had the longest
- 35:12streak out of the major 4, the New York Jets and now The Jets
- 35:15have the longest drought of not making the playoffs.
- 35:18Buffalo and The Jets that were tied with the the longest mark.
- 35:21They're in, and yeah, they are. They're two points behind the
- 35:25Lightning. Are they 2 points and they might
- 35:27play each other tonight? Oh really?
- 35:28I think. Pretty important one there.
- 35:30And the Canadians also with 100 points on the season.
- 35:33Yeah, I can't see it. I mean, I hope I don't like
- 35:34Canadian team wins, but I've got Tampa.
- 35:36Carolina is the two teams out of the East.
- 35:40Now Dallas and Minnesota are going to have to play in the
- 35:42first round. They are and this stupid, stupid
- 35:44structure that they had. And there's one thing that also
- 35:47stuck out when you you mentioned that because you've said this a
- 35:50lot the last five years. I can't, I can't bet.
- 35:53Vegas, no. And what do we see?
- 35:55Yeah, what? Do they got there twice?
- 35:57Three types. They won it in 2018 and they've
- 36:01been there. I just like, I'm not going to
- 36:04bet Vegas. Even though they made a coaching
- 36:05change late, the Islanders made one yesterday.
- 36:08With five games left in the years they're making a they're
- 36:11firing their head coach to bring in a new one.
- 36:13We'll see where it goes. I can't wait.
- 36:15I'll love the Stanley Cup in the quest for it.
- 36:17I get into sixteen wins, baby. It takes takes me a while to get
- 36:21here. We got the Minnesota angle that
- 36:23helps I. Think they've got a legitimate
- 36:25chance, Trent, I really do. Speaking of that, you know many
- 36:27people in the hockey circle. What happened over in eastern
- 36:30Iowa? Did you hear?
- 36:32Team left. Yes, and one year hiatus is what
- 36:35they're hoping. For they're not coming back, no,
- 36:38I doubt. And so that's the is the AA,
- 36:41yes, the AA equivalent? Exactly.
- 36:44The Highlanders. Yep.
- 36:45So did you hear anything more no about it?
- 36:48I didn't, other than the fact that I mean.
- 36:50Market too small to support it, just nobody supported it.
- 36:53I don't know the answer. Because I know when you consider
- 36:56Cedar Rapids, IA city, the corridor as it's called over
- 36:58there, the Cedar Rapids USHL team.
- 37:02Does pretty well. They do well and they just never
- 37:05could get attendance away from that.
- 37:06I wonder if that was an angle behind it and the hockey fans in
- 37:09that market kind of dug. Not enough to, yeah, not enough
- 37:12to to go around for two franchises is my guess.
- 37:15But yeah, yeah, I saw that. It was about what, a month ago,
- 37:17I think they announced that that the Highlanders are on hiatus.
- 37:22We'll see if they come back. We'll come back with trends,
- 37:24plays of the day. Off a good weekend.
- 37:27I saw that, yes, you had a nice weekend.
- 37:29You're actually you're actually hitting now.
- 37:31What's the team total for care for UConn tonight?
- 37:34Great question. Let me bring it back up here.
- 37:37You can't pick stats. Here we go, more lines.
- 37:42Team totals high 60s got to be high low right around 70. 69
- 37:481/2. Is it really?
- 37:49And Michigan is 76 1/2, so right around that number we were
- 37:52talking about. So right at that one.
- 37:55What you like Yukon over? No, no team totals.
- 37:59I bet them like twice a year. They're never right.
- 38:02I always feel like I have a great angle.
- 38:04You come up with these ones that you just don't wager on very
- 38:07often. That just falls by the wait
- 38:09side. All right, that's next.
- 38:11Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:14Condon, welcome back our final segment, Trent's plays of the
- 38:16day momentarily. Let's get Rob Doster in here.
- 38:19He's been very busy, but he wants to give us a couple of
- 38:22minutes on the natty. We understand.
- 38:23First of all, just your thoughts on the Malone Higher, real quick
- 38:27on that before we get your take on the national championship
- 38:29game tonight. Rob, you say I'm you say I'm
- 38:32very busy right now. I wasn't very busy.
- 38:34The Monday is usually the slowest day, championship Monday
- 38:36and then boom, out of nowhere, Michael Malone.
- 38:39You know, I think Carolina had this plan.
- 38:42They're like, let me see how I can ruin Rob's parents on on
- 38:47Chet and Ken's show. Let me see how we can mess this
- 38:50up for those guys. Now, look, I I like it.
- 38:53I actually like it a lot, pending the staff, if they get
- 38:56the right staff in place that knows how to navigate this world
- 38:59that we're in, in this era of college basketball.
- 39:02I think that he is a guy that can just coach ball.
- 39:05He won the NBA championship when Alice Caravan was still in
- 39:09college. Think about that.
- 39:11The Duke can coach, get the staff in place to be able to
- 39:14give him the players he needs, and they'll be they'll be
- 39:16winning games again soon. Some talk about euro connections
- 39:19too. I mean connecting dots.
- 39:20Does that make a little sense? After what we saw from Illinois,
- 39:23that those euro connections with the Joker going together and
- 39:26that potentially could also be a fit with Malone.
- 39:29Look, all I'm saying is that Nicola Yokich hasn't used up his
- 39:33college eligibility. So you never know.
- 39:34You never know. Just follow a lawsuit.
- 39:36You never know. Let's go back before we go
- 39:39forward. Obviously, we all thought it was
- 39:41going to be a classic game. Michigan and Arizona promised to
- 39:44be that, clearly didn't get that.
- 39:47Were you shocked at the result? Yes, yeah.
- 39:51I thought I literally predicted on our show that Jayden Bradley
- 39:54was going to hit a game winner with less than 3 seconds left,
- 39:57and they're down by 30 at one point in the second-half.
- 40:00So a little bit of a buzzkill. That's the way that it played
- 40:02out. But I think that what we're
- 40:04learning in this tournament is that maybe Michigan lost some
- 40:07games because they were just bored.
- 40:09I think it might have been that simple so.
- 40:12Yeah, man, Michigan's a buzz saw.
- 40:13And I say all that to say, UConn tonight.
- 40:16Roll skis. UConn by a million.
- 40:18You're a Yukon guy, though. We've got a neat letter audience
- 40:21also know that also on top of it, I.
- 40:23Think it's going to be a good game?
- 40:24What's the game plan tonight? Here's what's going to happen,
- 40:27all right? If UConn wins, this is what's
- 40:29going to happen. They're going to control tempo.
- 40:31They'll have 5 or fewer turnovers.
- 40:33They're going to make 12 or more threes.
- 40:36Michigan's going to make 5 or fewer threes.
- 40:38Yukon will win the glass and they're going to keep the the
- 40:41Wolverines out of transition. If UConn wins, the final score
- 40:44of this game is going to be 68 to 64 or something like that.
- 40:47If Michigan wins, they're going to put up 95 points and win by
- 40:5030. If Michigan does complete that
- 40:53and does it by putting 90 up on Danny Hurley squad here, where
- 40:57do we rank them? I know it's quick.
- 40:58I know it's very, very early to do that.
- 41:01Where does mission go in the pantheon of certainly recent
- 41:04champions that we've seen? I mean, they're up there.
- 41:08I think that they're in the same conversation with like 2024
- 41:11UConn, 2018 Villanova was a juggernaut, 2009 Carolina with
- 41:17Tyler Hansboro. I still think, and you guys tell
- 41:20me this is insane. I still think that last year's
- 41:23Duke and 2015 Kentucky have to be in the conversations for the
- 41:27greatest basketball teams that we've seen.
- 41:30But they you can't put them in the conversation for the teams
- 41:32that have achieved the most. And that's the other problem.
- 41:34Michigan, they didn't win the Big 10 tournament.
- 41:35Those other teams won their conference tournament as well.
- 41:37Yep. Good stuff, Rob.
- 41:39We'll let you go. Thanks for giving us a couple of
- 41:40minutes, brother. Appreciate it.
- 41:42Jay, anytime that you want breaking news, just just just
- 41:46schedule you. Yeah, schedule me on the show.
- 41:48All right? Good.
- 41:49Sorry about that fellas. Thank you.
- 41:50No worries anytime. Good to hear from you.
- 41:52Matt Norland, you're seeing this tweet.
- 41:54Why this Malone thing's picked up speed.
- 41:56You know who turned them down, which got the ball of the wheels
- 41:59in motion. With that, they wanted to meet
- 42:00with Ben McCollum yesterday. McCollum said no.
- 42:04This is from Matt Norlander. UNC hoped to meet with McCollum
- 42:08in person Sunday for a proper interview, but he passed on that
- 42:11invitation to stay at Iowa. Malone's candidacy picked up
- 42:15speed as names were removed. Wow, how about that?
- 42:20McCollum said No thank you, North.
- 42:22Carolina. To North Carolina.
- 42:24Not A&T. Nope, not Campbell.
- 42:26Nope. How about that?
- 42:28That's. It's got to make Hawkeye
- 42:30feedings have to pretty good. Absolutely make their Wallace
- 42:34feel pretty good. Who are you betting?
- 42:36Let's do it, we got. We have Matt Noorlander
- 42:38tomorrow. We do.
- 42:39He will join us at 1:30 tomorrow as long as there's no breaking
- 42:43news. Let's hope that's not the case.
- 42:451 Baseball play for tonight. Gonna play the Tigers against my
- 42:48twins. Plus, what are you?
- 42:50Gonna bet against your twins most games most days.
- 42:53The price will get ridiculous after a while, but yeah, that
- 42:56bullpen's so bad tonight. Connecticut.
- 42:59There was a 7 out there in the market.
- 43:01Grand was this morning. Yep, and two player props for
- 43:04tonight. Gimme Johnson over 12 1/2 points
- 43:07for the Wolverines tonight. We'll jump aboard on that one
- 43:10and demere over a half. Three pointer makes a three-week
- 43:14cash they were laying -190 but couple of player props and a
- 43:18title pick along with fading the Twins.
- 43:20Enjoy the game. Let's root for a good one.
- 43:23We'll talk about it tomorrow. Off the bench next Miller and
- 43:25Condon noon to two Iowa Sports Radio Network.
