- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to a DM podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We'll try to keep it as nice as we can,
- 0:05Speaker 2: but you might hear the occasional swear word in No
- 0:07Speaker 2: Dribble Don't tell Mom. Hello, and welcome to No Dribble,
- 0:22Speaker 2: the podcast where we talk about netball and we talk
- 0:24Speaker 2: about a whole lot of other things. This one is
- 0:26Speaker 2: like a moon landing for us. Here we are in
- 0:29Speaker 2: three parts of Australia doing the recording for the first time,
- 0:32Speaker 2: with none of us in the same room. So who
- 0:34Speaker 2: knows how this is going to go? Who knows whether
- 0:36Speaker 2: the moon landing was really staged or not. No, it wasn't.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Let's not be ridiculous, but let's get down to business. Hello,
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm Catherine Cox in Sydney.
- 0:44Speaker 3: And I'm Liz Ellis. I'm Bungelin Country. There you go, there's.
- 0:48Speaker 4: One for you.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Oh that's fantastic.
- 0:50Speaker 4: I'm at home.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm in ex Mouth. I don't think I could
- 0:54Speaker 2: be any further away from you guys and still be
- 0:56Speaker 2: in the same country. I'm up near ninglu so exciting.
- 1:01Speaker 1: When's the big adventure swimming with the whale sharks? It is?
- 1:05Speaker 2: It is? And Manta rays and all sorts of other
- 1:08Speaker 2: fabulous stuff. I had a massive adventure yesterday in Perth, though,
- 1:11Speaker 2: but we will get to that shortly when we're talking
- 1:14Speaker 2: about some netble. But how's everyone's week been good?
- 1:17Speaker 1: And do you know the best part of my week
- 1:19Speaker 1: was watching Elizabeth That'll just come out of retirement yesterday
- 1:22Speaker 1: and play a firll on the game of netball in
- 1:25Speaker 1: seventeen years. And there was even some heckling coming from
- 1:29Speaker 1: the Swift's head coach brianiy Akle during the game. Are
- 1:32Speaker 1: you feeling this morning, Elizabeth?
- 1:33Speaker 3: I'm surprisingly okay. I really did expect to be very
- 1:36Speaker 3: sore and funny, I was so scared, so I got
- 1:38Speaker 3: called in very late for the There was a off
- 1:43Speaker 3: court all stars match and it was really cool. It
- 1:45Speaker 3: was some of the senior executives from Sun Call, who
- 1:49Speaker 3: obviously the major sponsor, and they had pulled in a
- 1:51Speaker 3: lot of women from all different fields. There was a
- 1:53Speaker 3: woman who's truck driver, woman who runs by from the bush.
- 1:58Speaker 3: There was some obviously some executives. Son called Jian Rooney
- 2:01Speaker 3: former Sweem was there. Sam Squires, who's a journalist was there,
- 2:04Speaker 3: and we basically played netball against each other in the
- 2:08Speaker 3: lead up to the Swifts five Birds game and Stacy West,
- 2:11Speaker 3: who's the CEO of Netball Australia, was supposed to play
- 2:14Speaker 3: but she came down with the flute, so she stayed
- 2:16Speaker 3: at home and she rang me on Saturday and said,
- 2:18Speaker 3: can you please please please go out? And we had
- 2:22Speaker 3: gone to Sydney for the weekend because it was a
- 2:24Speaker 3: Swift's heritage round, so we were just there as sort of,
- 2:27Speaker 3: you know a bit of a family holiday and we're
- 2:29Speaker 3: supposed to do the bridge climb yesterday morning, but the
- 2:32Speaker 3: weather turned pretty horrible on it, so we can it
- 2:34Speaker 3: And I said to Stacy, can go out. But I
- 2:36Speaker 3: said to Matthew I was seeking of doing it, and
- 2:38Speaker 3: he was like, just don't injure yourself.
- 2:40Speaker 4: It's really cared about.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And I thought that was all I cared about until
- 2:44Speaker 3: I walked over the white line and got the fever
- 2:46Speaker 3: and you know, the whistle went and it was like,
- 2:51Speaker 3: oh my goodness. I just forgot about getting injured, and
- 2:55Speaker 3: forgot that I was fifty one, and forgot I how
- 2:57Speaker 3: to play netball for seventeen years, and I was great fun.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I just had a smile on my daughter.
- 3:02Speaker 4: The whole time. I forgot how much fun it is
- 3:03Speaker 4: to play.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Did you go back into captain made? Yeah?
- 3:06Speaker 3: I did. Actually I ran the warm up and I
- 3:08Speaker 3: when did the toss, I was like, oh, Greta Buena
- 3:11Speaker 3: was our coach. She was too busy just having fun.
- 3:14Speaker 3: It was this serious, this is back at netball.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And I loved the halftime. I interviewed Lise and she
- 3:21Speaker 1: was sweating like a pig, like she was blowing like.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Like a pig.
- 3:28Speaker 3: But yeah, all the support I had on the sideline
- 3:30Speaker 3: was great. So Briani was heckling me. She was sitting
- 3:33Speaker 3: just near my husband and my kids who were heckling
- 3:35Speaker 3: me all that. My little boy was like, go mom,
- 3:38Speaker 3: go mom. Everyone's like, Mom, throw shoulder passes, which is
- 3:41Speaker 3: exactly what I tell her every Saturday when I'm coming.
- 3:46Speaker 3: No love. It was great fun and there was some
- 3:48Speaker 3: super shots. Yeah, but I actually started off playing goalkeeper
- 3:52Speaker 3: and loved it. And then Gretel, in what I found
- 3:55Speaker 3: only think was an act of revenge, put me in
- 3:58Speaker 3: goal shoot so I can see how hard and let
- 4:01Speaker 3: me just say I practiced my rebounding skills a lot.
- 4:05Speaker 1: She did. I can vouch for that. The funniest thing though,
- 4:07Speaker 1: after the game is I was talking to Lizza's daughter
- 4:10Speaker 1: Evelyn and said, now, what did you make of mum's game?
- 4:13Speaker 1: What advice would you give her? Do you think? And
- 4:15Speaker 1: she looked at me like the list is long, Catherine,
- 4:18Speaker 1: I don't have the time. I said, okay, if you
- 4:20Speaker 1: have to prioritize one thing, what would it be? And
- 4:23Speaker 1: she said footwork. Yeah, she slowed up a little bit,
- 4:29Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Then no, my fitness is okay with this because I
- 4:34Speaker 3: was playing goalkeeper and goal shooter. I mean, I didn't
- 4:36Speaker 3: realize how much you don't move when you play goal shooter.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I'll stop it.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Did you have an alisbander?
- 4:43Speaker 1: No? But I had scrunched She had a scrunchy on.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I got a photo on social media.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I had myigh performance hair.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Actually Evelyn did my hair before we went out, so
- 4:53Speaker 3: she gave me a high performance Plenty tail and I
- 4:55Speaker 3: put a scrunch in from the Mighty Balmain Wolverines one
- 4:58Speaker 3: of the ladies on the court that was her netball team,
- 5:01Speaker 3: and then I switched to a swift scrutchy during in postmatch.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Lady just on that on the high performance hair. I'm
- 5:08Speaker 1: so distracted now by everything that we talk about. So
- 5:11Speaker 1: in the middle of the broadcast yesterday, there's a team huddle,
- 5:14Speaker 1: We've got the cameras in it, and there's a shot
- 5:16Speaker 1: of the back of the girl's heads sitting at the
- 5:18Speaker 1: bench and it was Sarah Clown next to Maddie Turner
- 5:21Speaker 1: and their ponytails were so good. I found myself with
- 5:24Speaker 1: my phone up in the middle of the broadcasting photos
- 5:28Speaker 1: of their hair so I could show you that's funny.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Doppened new Katherine Cox Well, she got sacked because she
- 5:34Speaker 3: got distracted by no Google podcast.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So what's Heritage Round?
- 5:44Speaker 3: So Heritage Round is when the Swifts wear yellow, they
- 5:46Speaker 3: go back to the old yellow dress, which is what
- 5:48Speaker 3: we wore. We wore the yellow dress for twelve years,
- 5:51Speaker 3: but the Swifts have been wearing the red dress now
- 5:52Speaker 3: for sixteen years. I always think of the red dresses
- 5:54Speaker 3: really you but they've been read longer than they were yellow.
- 5:58Speaker 3: But it's a really lovely thing and it really came
- 5:59Speaker 3: out about with Briani Akle taking up the coaching job
- 6:02Speaker 3: at the Swifts. She was very keen that the players
- 6:04Speaker 3: understood where they had come from, so that they could
- 6:06Speaker 3: know where they were going and I thought when she started,
- 6:09Speaker 3: I was so grateful, as were all of us, that
- 6:11Speaker 3: she was recognizing.
- 6:13Speaker 4: What had gone before and she had been part of that.
- 6:15Speaker 3: So yesterday was the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of
- 6:18Speaker 3: about two thousand and four premiership. So you know, they
- 6:21Speaker 3: got us all into a function and they had all
- 6:23Speaker 3: the part like havend Pass players there, Katrina Wagg who
- 6:26Speaker 3: was the first captain and player number one for the Swifts.
- 6:28Speaker 3: She was there, Mary McCormick, Sharon Hill right through until
- 6:33Speaker 3: you know that sort of our age group and some
- 6:36Speaker 3: younger players.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So it's just so goot me and your age group.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Right through until.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Our maturity levels. And it's great to see everybody. And
- 6:48Speaker 3: what I love is that all our partners get there
- 6:51Speaker 3: and they're all so excited about seeing each other. And
- 6:54Speaker 3: you know, the back when when we were playing the boys,
- 6:59Speaker 3: I used to go at half time before winning. They
- 7:01Speaker 3: had the chop Wedge club, so they go up to
- 7:02Speaker 3: the back of the stadium and buy chop wedges if
- 7:05Speaker 3: we're winning at halftime, so it was just some little thing.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Right now, of course they go, I'm going to be
- 7:10Speaker 3: using their walking sticks. But like it's just so lovely
- 7:14Speaker 3: to say everybody. And then I won't tell too many stories.
- 7:17Speaker 3: But after the game we all went out to a
- 7:20Speaker 3: pub nearby and all the kids were there, and Harper
- 7:23Speaker 3: and my kids and Brian's kids and Ali Broadbeat's kids
- 7:27Speaker 3: and everyone's kids were just all talking and it's so lovely.
- 7:30Speaker 4: It's such a beautiful community.
- 7:32Speaker 3: And we got to watch the Swifts fantastic.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It was a win win. But also on other news,
- 7:36Speaker 1: who else has been very very clever this week? Oh yeah, Carolyn?
- 7:41Speaker 1: Can you tell us about your fabulous book and where
- 7:45Speaker 1: it's ended up? Please?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Ah? Thanks? So I had a book come out last
- 7:50Speaker 2: year orb we only want What's Best and this week
- 7:52Speaker 2: very exciting. It's been long listed for an award which
- 7:55Speaker 2: is about Australian women crime running. Thank you, thank you.
- 8:00Speaker 4: That's a great read. You're so clever.
- 8:02Speaker 1: So how do we can we vote? Can we influence?
- 8:04Speaker 1: How do we get involved in this?
- 8:06Speaker 4: No?
- 8:07Speaker 2: Only the members of the Sisters in Crime Association can
- 8:11Speaker 2: vote for the Reader's Choice Awards, So this is actually
- 8:13Speaker 2: you know, the beauty of this is that I don't
- 8:15Speaker 2: know the judges, they don't know me, so it's very
- 8:18Speaker 2: nice to have the book acknowledged amongst some other really
- 8:22Speaker 2: fabulous writers and books and the like, and it has
- 8:25Speaker 2: to go from here to a shortlist and then from
- 8:27Speaker 2: the shortlist to the winner. So this is nothing more
- 8:30Speaker 2: than what it is at the moment. But it's actually
- 8:32Speaker 2: a really lovely feeling to have the book acknowledged by
- 8:34Speaker 2: people who don't don't even know me, who've just read it.
- 8:36Speaker 2: When yeah, that's good and they enjoyed it.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Kay, well we'll put the details on social so everybody
- 8:41Speaker 1: can see it.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great, thank you. We should read it.
- 8:44Speaker 4: I read.
- 8:44Speaker 3: It's a cracking read. Although I can hear your voice
- 8:46Speaker 3: all the way through it. I feel like, Catherine, I
- 8:51Speaker 3: should be allowed to vote because we may or may
- 8:53Speaker 3: not have committed some petty crimes in our time.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Where can we get the book? Speaking of petty crimes,
- 8:59Speaker 1: I'm going to go on stick one under my shirt.
- 9:01Speaker 2: No, you know you're going to pay for it still
- 9:02Speaker 2: on book Topia, or you can get it on Kindle
- 9:05Speaker 2: or audible, Okay, on it.
- 9:08Speaker 3: So do you know what, Catherine, That makes you the
- 9:10Speaker 3: only member of this podcast that has written book.
- 9:12Speaker 4: So I would like for you to write a book please.
- 9:14Speaker 1: That's not happening. I could do a children's book that's
- 9:16Speaker 1: about my attentions.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Man, but apparently children's books are really hard to write.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Did you contribute to Lizza's book? I had a story
- 9:24Speaker 2: in Lizzer's book about when I went insane trying to
- 9:27Speaker 2: have my second child and just was looking at all
- 9:30Speaker 2: of the loopy advice anywhere, desperate to fall prey.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Remind Liz people of your book and what it was about,
- 9:37Speaker 1: because that might sound carol story just then. Well, Liza's
- 9:43Speaker 1: book was a cookbook, Turkey based cookbook, No.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Oh God, the Mine.
- 9:50Speaker 3: No. My book was called if at First you Don't conceive,
- 9:53Speaker 3: and it's your friendly guard to tackling infertility. So I'm
- 9:55Speaker 3: pretty sure you can still get at places. I think
- 9:57Speaker 3: just about a reading fertility clinic, or every fertility clinic
- 10:00Speaker 3: has a copy of one. But I really did lean
- 10:02Speaker 3: heavily on my friends and family and network to give
- 10:05Speaker 3: me their or talk to me about their fertility stories.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And I was very grateful because lots of people time
- 10:10Speaker 3: with things that were very personal to them. And I
- 10:12Speaker 3: had a great conversation with Carolyn about what she did
- 10:17Speaker 3: when she was trying to fall pregnant, which was.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I was at an event and it was a literary event,
- 10:23Speaker 2: and I met a woman there. She has nothing to
- 10:25Speaker 2: do with conception. She's not a doctor. She was at
- 10:28Speaker 2: that stage a literary agent. And I don't know how
- 10:31Speaker 2: we ended up talking about how I was having trouble
- 10:33Speaker 2: falling pregnant, and like you, Liz, it was secondary in fertility.
- 10:36Speaker 2: So first time around it was easy, so I went, yeah,
- 10:38Speaker 2: no problem, this is going to be fine. Second time
- 10:40Speaker 2: much more difficult. But anyway, this woman sort of looked
- 10:43Speaker 2: at me and then gestured down towards my pelvic region
- 10:46Speaker 2: and said, yes, I see you need to draw some
- 10:49Speaker 2: energy down here. You should start hula hooping and go
- 10:53Speaker 2: and get some red or orange underwear and that will
- 10:57Speaker 2: draw the energy.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so clearly insane. And about a week later I
- 11:04Speaker 2: bought myself an underplane.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Now, seriously, did that work well?
- 11:11Speaker 2: I have another child. No, it was quite some time afterwards.
- 11:14Speaker 2: So no, I don't think that the hula hooping, which
- 11:17Speaker 2: I'm no good at anyway, but the red underpants were
- 11:19Speaker 2: very nice and served me well for several years. But no,
- 11:24Speaker 2: I don't think that that was the trick. Cool it's
- 11:27Speaker 2: a product of the insanity that you have, isn't it
- 11:29Speaker 2: when you're trying to go through this and your body
- 11:31Speaker 2: is not doing what you want it to do.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Have you still got the hula hoop? Is it hanging
- 11:35Speaker 1: on the wall next to the family photo.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I don't know where the hula hoop's gone. At some
- 11:39Speaker 2: stage and renovation, my husband sensibly threw it out because it.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Was not seeing you hula hooping and your red undies
- 11:45Speaker 1: in the middle of the loungeero.
- 11:46Speaker 2: But enough about my uterus. You guys talking then about
- 11:55Speaker 2: what a fabulous experience you had catching up with your
- 11:58Speaker 2: old teammates and the like on the weekend. I don't
- 12:00Speaker 2: know whether you saw. Nat Medhurst has had an article
- 12:03Speaker 2: out recently in Code Sports talking about retirement and the
- 12:06Speaker 2: transition to a life post netball, and she surveyed a
- 12:10Speaker 2: bunch of former netballers about the player transition support and
- 12:15Speaker 2: that that experience. And I just thought it would be
- 12:17Speaker 2: really interesting to hear from you both about your decisions
- 12:21Speaker 2: to retire and the difficulties that you face then or otherwise.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Whether this brought up anything for.
- 12:29Speaker 3: You, well, the hardest part of my retirement was selling
- 12:32Speaker 3: Catherine that I was going to retire.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So she lickered me up good and then she broke
- 12:39Speaker 1: the news.
- 12:42Speaker 4: That is not a lie.
- 12:43Speaker 3: So I had made the decision at the start of
- 12:46Speaker 3: two thousand and seven that that was going to be
- 12:48Speaker 3: my last year, but I'd also decided that I wasn't
- 12:50Speaker 3: going to make it public. I was just going to
- 12:52Speaker 3: tell if you select paper on the thought, well, I
- 12:54Speaker 3: can't keep it from my bestie.
- 12:55Speaker 4: So I thought, I'll take.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Catherine out to lunch and I'll break the news. It
- 13:00Speaker 3: was well before the season started, so we went to
- 13:03Speaker 3: a really nice place in Sydney and by the harbor,
- 13:05Speaker 3: and we ordered a glass of champagne and I said.
- 13:07Speaker 4: We said cheer.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Did you think she was going to propose kas No, no,
- 13:11Speaker 2: this was not our first Red Hot dates.
- 13:16Speaker 4: This was back then in the off season. So we
- 13:19Speaker 4: did cheers.
- 13:20Speaker 3: And there's been a lot of talk about the move
- 13:23Speaker 3: to A and Z Championships and Catherine said something about it,
- 13:25Speaker 3: and I said, oh, well, actually, I just wanted to
- 13:27Speaker 3: tell you that I'm not playing this year. I thought
- 13:28Speaker 3: i'd have to get this out early. She goes this
- 13:30Speaker 3: year and I was like, no, you're not, and you said.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yes you are. No, I'm not This went on and
- 13:37Speaker 1: on for a very long time.
- 13:39Speaker 3: For a very long time, so unbeknownst to me at
- 13:41Speaker 3: the time, Catherine, who needs to go to the toilet,
- 13:44Speaker 3: often ducked off and left a voicemail message for Matthews
- 13:47Speaker 3: and it was a long, mong n dog Matthew, I
- 13:50Speaker 3: can't leave. You're letting her retire, And it was like, really,
- 13:53Speaker 3: it was unhappy, but it was well reasoned and you
- 13:57Speaker 3: sounded normal, right, So we go back and we keep
- 14:00Speaker 3: going and having lunch, and anyway, the lunch lunch turned
- 14:02Speaker 3: very long because Catherine was very well with the news
- 14:05Speaker 3: and I wasn't coping very well breaking the news to her.
- 14:08Speaker 3: So the first message to Matthew was at about half
- 14:10Speaker 3: past one. The second message was about four pm and it.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Was I can't believe.
- 14:19Speaker 3: The last message was at about eight pm, and the
- 14:21Speaker 3: last message was so that was in all honestly, that
- 14:29Speaker 3: was the hardest part.
- 14:30Speaker 4: So I knew telling Catherine was hard.
- 14:32Speaker 3: But I approached my retirement really methodically, and I decided
- 14:36Speaker 3: that I was going to set things up so I
- 14:37Speaker 3: wasn't retiring in my mind from netball. I was retiring
- 14:40Speaker 3: to heap of other different things. And I booked a
- 14:43Speaker 3: heap of travel, and I'd set up a few roles
- 14:46Speaker 3: on boards and some commentary work, and it sort of
- 14:49Speaker 3: gave me something to look forward to. But I was
- 14:51Speaker 3: really fortunate in that I got to retire the way
- 14:54Speaker 3: I wanted and we won that World Cup, and I
- 14:57Speaker 3: had already decided that was it.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Whether we won or lost the World Cup.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I'd had to go away and get very comfortable with
- 15:02Speaker 3: the fact that if we didn't win, was I going
- 15:04Speaker 3: to be okay with walking away?
- 15:05Speaker 4: And I don't know what that would have looked like.
- 15:07Speaker 3: And then the other thing that I did was after
- 15:09Speaker 3: I got some advice from a sports scientist about all
- 15:12Speaker 3: physiologists about when I finished, not going cold turkey on
- 15:16Speaker 3: my training straight away because you lose all those endorphins.
- 15:18Speaker 3: And I trained myself down over about six months to
- 15:21Speaker 3: end up with what looked like the exercise program of
- 15:24Speaker 3: a normal human.
- 15:25Speaker 4: And so I didn't go cold turkey.
- 15:27Speaker 3: And so I'm going to say my transition into retirement
- 15:30Speaker 3: was very planned, and it was made easier by the
- 15:33Speaker 3: fact that I'd had this great fairy tale finish. But
- 15:36Speaker 3: I read NAT's article and went, if you don't get
- 15:38Speaker 3: what like that fairy tyl finish. Retiring is a very
- 15:41Speaker 3: very different beast, and I know people from a lot
- 15:44Speaker 3: of other different sports sort.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Of struggle with this as well, you know.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I know, for example, people who went to the Sydney
- 15:49Speaker 3: Olympics and were rock stars for two weeks and then
- 15:52Speaker 3: really struggled after that when the Olympic circus moved on
- 15:56Speaker 3: and they were on the spotlight. So retirement is really difficult,
- 15:59Speaker 3: and I don't know there's a perfect way to do it,
- 16:01Speaker 3: but I think sports can get better in how they
- 16:03Speaker 3: help athletes do it.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Can you imagine your poor husband if you didn't win
- 16:07Speaker 1: that World Cup?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Do you know what he cried at the end of
- 16:09Speaker 3: the World Cup? And he was sitting next to my
- 16:11Speaker 3: sister and she said, you must be so proud. He said, no,
- 16:13Speaker 3: I just knew she lost. It was going to be
- 16:15Speaker 3: a long life together.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Truth true.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Yeah, so, but Catherine knew had a bit of a
- 16:23Speaker 3: different sort of approach or experience with your retirement too,
- 16:27Speaker 3: even though you did get a great finish.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I had the fairy tale as well, but I
- 16:31Speaker 1: think because it was a little bit further after yours,
- 16:33Speaker 1: most of the teams at that point had well being offices,
- 16:36Speaker 1: as they were called, a well being people, and so
- 16:38Speaker 1: I knew that my retirement was in the next three
- 16:42Speaker 1: or four years. It wasn't going to happen straight away,
- 16:44Speaker 1: but I knew it was coming, and so I had
- 16:45Speaker 1: started discussions with our wellbeing person about, you know, what
- 16:49Speaker 1: my retirement might look like. What did I want to do.
- 16:52Speaker 1: And I didn't really know what I was going to do,
- 16:54Speaker 1: but I wanted to walk away from the sport that
- 16:57Speaker 1: I did know. I didn't want to do anything to
- 16:59Speaker 1: do with the sport because that had taken up too
- 17:00Speaker 1: much of my life already. And I remember her just saying,
- 17:05Speaker 1: just be smart about this time. You've got left with
- 17:08Speaker 1: connections and people that are around the sport and people
- 17:11Speaker 1: that you may want to call upon when you do
- 17:14Speaker 1: make the decision to retire. Anyway, it was not till
- 17:17Speaker 1: I was with the Vixens, and I distinctly remember one
- 17:20Speaker 1: training session. We had to finish the session with fifty
- 17:23Speaker 1: shots in a row before you could stop. You couldn't
- 17:25Speaker 1: miss a shot. You had to have a defender on you.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So we'd already done our two hour training session. We
- 17:30Speaker 1: had to go to a post with a defender. I
- 17:32Speaker 1: got to forty seven shots on the first go, and
- 17:34Speaker 1: then I was with Joe Weston and she hit my
- 17:36Speaker 1: arm and I missed the shot and I thought, that's fine,
- 17:39Speaker 1: that's the way it is. I'll start again. And then
- 17:41Speaker 1: I could not get it. It took me forever, and
- 17:45Speaker 1: I got so frustrated when I finally did finish it. However,
- 17:49Speaker 1: long later, I kicked the netball across two courts and
- 17:53Speaker 1: I was like, I'm done. It was like that, It
- 17:57Speaker 1: just was. It used to be a challenge for me,
- 17:59Speaker 1: that sort of stuff, and he's to love it. And
- 18:01Speaker 1: that day I was so angry and I hated life,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and I'm like, I'm done. And I literally told Samoe
- 18:07Speaker 1: mckinness that week that I think I'm done at the
- 18:10Speaker 1: end of this season. So it was pretty clear cut.
- 18:12Speaker 1: But that was beautiful because then I just got the
- 18:14Speaker 1: rest of the season just to chill and relax and
- 18:16Speaker 1: enjoy playing without any stresses, and got the fairy tale
- 18:19Speaker 1: ending as well. So we were both very lucky because
- 18:21Speaker 1: I appreciate that doesn't happen for a lot of people. Yeah.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I mean, other players get dropped and that's the end of.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Their career, were injured, Yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Injured, and now that it's your profession as well, I
- 18:30Speaker 3: think there's that really difficult overlay. Like if it's your
- 18:33Speaker 3: job and you suddenly lose your job because you've fallen
- 18:36Speaker 3: out of form or you're injured or whatever happens, you
- 18:39Speaker 3: don't get a new contract.
- 18:40Speaker 4: I think that would be so difficult.
- 18:43Speaker 2: And Kas, what happened to you? What did you do
- 18:45Speaker 2: immediately after retirement?
- 18:46Speaker 1: No, we'll see. This is the problem, isn't it? Because
- 18:48Speaker 1: I said I didn't want to do I didn't want
- 18:50Speaker 1: to do anything to do with netball. But as soon
- 18:52Speaker 1: as you announce and you say the words I'm retiring,
- 18:55Speaker 1: the sport wants to keep you because they know there's
- 18:58Speaker 1: that level of expertise. So I ended up coaching, and
- 19:02Speaker 1: I also ended up in commentary, but only because Liz
- 19:05Speaker 1: and Keiley DeVry, who was an ex teammate and was
- 19:08Speaker 1: with Channel Night at the time, forced me to. Because
- 19:10Speaker 1: they just kept saying, you'll be so good at it,
- 19:12Speaker 1: You've got to do it, You'll be so good at it,
- 19:14Speaker 1: and I was just.
- 19:15Speaker 4: I don't want to do it.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I think I'll be terrible. I'm so scared of all
- 19:18Speaker 1: that stuff. And yeah, thank you guys, because it's the
- 19:21Speaker 1: best job in the world.
- 19:22Speaker 2: And who are you coaching with?
- 19:24Speaker 1: I was coaching stately one with Hills District. So I
- 19:27Speaker 1: went back to my original club, my original association, and
- 19:30Speaker 1: did some coaching with him for the four years. But
- 19:32Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. I'm good when it's game day
- 19:35Speaker 1: doing training sessions. Oh so hard, so hard.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Oh you're under eight. Seem to have a good time.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Yeah, well you can play horses and jockeys for an
- 19:44Speaker 1: hour and they don't care.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I also don't get better if I do that.
- 19:53Speaker 2: I did something very brave yesterday.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Oh what did you do?
- 19:57Speaker 2: I went into the Fires of Mordor, which is obviously
- 20:00Speaker 2: rac Arena with the Fever fans dressed in a Giant's
- 20:04Speaker 2: T shirt. It was so great. That arena is so
- 20:08Speaker 2: fantastic and the Fever fans everyone there is in the
- 20:12Speaker 2: team merch and it's all the new team merch. They're
- 20:15Speaker 2: right behind the team. It was just it was so exciting.
- 20:19Speaker 2: That stadium is fabulous and the Giants brought it. It
- 20:22Speaker 2: was great. There were maybe twenty of us in the
- 20:25Speaker 2: stadium wearing orange and we did our bit. We were
- 20:29Speaker 2: allowed Giants fans, but I had such a great time
- 20:33Speaker 2: with the Dribblers, both online and in the stadium. So
- 20:36Speaker 2: Jeannett O'Brien was with the Giants family and friends across
- 20:41Speaker 2: the other side of the stadium and we had a
- 20:42Speaker 2: beautiful moment waving at one another. And if you jump
- 20:47Speaker 2: on our Facebook page you can see a lot of
- 20:49Speaker 2: images of people taking photos of me, Katherine wearing my hat.
- 20:53Speaker 1: You know, it was the best thing ever. Our Dribblers
- 20:57Speaker 1: are brilliant the amount of photos that were coming through
- 21:01Speaker 1: of Spotto, Caroline in the crowd. But then they were
- 21:05Speaker 1: also watching the telecasts. They were watching the broadcast and
- 21:08Speaker 1: taking photos of you behind the bench when it came
- 21:11Speaker 1: onto the screen. So they were going to all lengths
- 21:13Speaker 1: to capture you in your dorky hat.
- 21:17Speaker 3: So just a little recap for those that don't know.
- 21:19Speaker 3: If you want the whole story, jump onto last week's podcast.
- 21:21Speaker 3: But the recap is that last week Catherine bullied Carolyne
- 21:25Speaker 3: into wearing not just an orange shirt at the Fever game,
- 21:29Speaker 3: but a multicolored cat with an orange propeller on top.
- 21:33Speaker 1: What she had to stand out and it worked.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Something that was really fabulous is that my son's friends
- 21:39Speaker 2: were also watching the broadcast together. I just want to
- 21:45Speaker 2: say hello to Tanya Orchard, who was sitting behind me,
- 21:48Speaker 2: and I didn't get to say hello to her, and
- 21:50Speaker 2: I didn't hear her as we're walking past, but my
- 21:52Speaker 2: daughter said she thought she might have heard someone calling out.
- 21:54Speaker 2: So sorry, Tanya, I would love to have met you,
- 21:56Speaker 2: but at that stage I was dragging my sad and
- 21:59Speaker 2: sorry are sound the stadium? But no, it was great.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I'm not a Giant, this is my first time in
- 22:05Speaker 2: a Giant's T shirt. But you know, I think if
- 22:06Speaker 2: you go to a game where your own team isn't playing,
- 22:09Speaker 2: you should always support the underdog. But man, they weren't
- 22:12Speaker 2: playing like underdogs yesterday. That was It was a really
- 22:15Speaker 2: exciting game right till the very last. The Fever are
- 22:19Speaker 2: much better at the Mexican Wave than the Swifts fans,
- 22:22Speaker 2: so that's another thing that we can work on next year. Swifties,
- 22:27Speaker 2: you committed and probably need to be committed. Well, thank
- 22:33Speaker 2: you for the challenge because that now obviously allows me
- 22:36Speaker 2: to find something that I can make you do at
- 22:38Speaker 2: some stage, and I'm working on that. Lizbuths, it was
- 22:43Speaker 2: in another exciting weekend in Netbule.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Yeah, how some of the games on the weekend honestly
- 22:48Speaker 1: just when you think they can't get any better and
- 22:50Speaker 1: so close to finals. So one of the first games
- 22:54Speaker 1: of the round was the Mavericks and the Lightning. The
- 22:57Speaker 1: MAVs got a win up a buy one which puts
- 23:00Speaker 1: them now on equal points to the Lightning, so they
- 23:03Speaker 1: are going to have a real crack at that fourth spot.
- 23:06Speaker 1: And then the Five Birds without Danelle wall On their
- 23:09Speaker 1: superstar a one point win as well over the New
- 23:12Speaker 1: South Wales Swifts in Sydney.
- 23:14Speaker 2: What is going on? And next week we've got Lightning
- 23:18Speaker 2: v Five Birds, which I just think is going to
- 23:20Speaker 2: be an insanely good match, so exciting.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm doing that game that's in Brisbane. I'm
- 23:25Speaker 1: very excited to get up there for that one because
- 23:28Speaker 1: not only is it a derby, but it's going to
- 23:30Speaker 1: be really important for both of those sides for their
- 23:33Speaker 1: finals chances. So it's been a brilliant round.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I don't know who to support in the finals. I mean,
- 23:38Speaker 2: obviously we don't have all four locked in yet, but
- 23:43Speaker 2: it's going to be tricky. I've got to find a
- 23:44Speaker 2: team to get behind. But then as soon as I
- 23:46Speaker 2: get behind a team they will lose, because that's what's
- 23:49Speaker 2: going on with me at the moment as a Queens
- 23:51Speaker 2: and State of Origin supporter. My husband is a Paramatta supporter.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I'm the Swift supporter. I supported the Giants yesterday. I
- 23:58Speaker 2: am the kiss of death in sport in twenty twenty four.
- 24:01Speaker 2: So it's your.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Favorite color, Maybe work backwards. Don't think about the team
- 24:06Speaker 1: and how are you going to destroy their chances of
- 24:08Speaker 1: success this season?
- 24:10Speaker 3: Do you think color is a good thing or should you? Like,
- 24:13Speaker 3: are there sort of some Netbull qualities that you want
- 24:15Speaker 3: to make your decision on. I'm just trying to figure
- 24:17Speaker 3: out how we help you.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You should go on mascots because you're all about the mascot.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I should go on mascots. Actually yeah, yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Maybe you should do Who would win a fight between
- 24:28Speaker 3: between the mascots?
- 24:29Speaker 2: Okay, I like that. I'm going to I'm going to
- 24:31Speaker 2: take this one on notice and come back to you
- 24:35Speaker 2: next week because quite clearly, well I think it might
- 24:37Speaker 2: have to be the MAVs. If the MAVs are in,
- 24:39Speaker 2: because it's like they weren't even a team this time
- 24:41Speaker 2: last year, so too, if they can get themselves into
- 24:44Speaker 2: the finals, that is amazing.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And that unicorn would stab anybody's eyes out too, so
- 24:50Speaker 1: it would probably win. You're right, smart, smart, smart Carolyn.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Obviously you're away this week and next week you're missing
- 24:57Speaker 1: Swift's run home. What are you doing with the think
- 25:00Speaker 1: it's for next week?
- 25:01Speaker 2: Well, look, this is a good question because I have
- 25:03Speaker 2: four members tickets that are really good seats, and there's
- 25:07Speaker 2: just not enough netball left for us to be able
- 25:09Speaker 2: to waste good seats at a Super Netball game. So
- 25:12Speaker 2: I was thinking that I might actually give them away
- 25:15Speaker 2: to a dribbler. So it's the Swift's Thunderbirds game, which
- 25:18Speaker 2: is a Grand final rematch on Sunday at four o'clock
- 25:21Speaker 2: in Sydney. Now there's no grand prize package here, there's
- 25:25Speaker 2: no airfares, there's no accommodation, there's no parking voucher, there's
- 25:28Speaker 2: not even a bottle of water that comes with these.
- 25:30Speaker 2: But I do have these four really good seats that
- 25:32Speaker 2: I would just be thrilled to see a dribbler go to.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Whether you're supporting the Thunderbirds, whether you're supporting the Swifts,
- 25:38Speaker 2: whether you just want to go and watch some good netball,
- 25:40Speaker 2: I don't care why don't we do something on the
- 25:43Speaker 2: Instagram on Thursday. Yep, Record Dribblers, take a look at that.
- 25:49Speaker 2: I don't know what we're going to do, but we'll
- 25:50Speaker 2: put something up on Thursday. And if you want to
- 25:53Speaker 2: go and sit in my hot seats for the Swift
- 25:56Speaker 2: Thunderbirds game this Sunday at four o'clock, jump on board
- 26:00Speaker 2: that on the Instagram and someone will get them, and
- 26:03Speaker 2: then someone should be sending us some photos. The classic
- 26:06Speaker 2: photo from that seat is if you have a can
- 26:08Speaker 2: of Gin and Tonic and you stand and you put
- 26:11Speaker 2: your back to the court and show that you have
- 26:13Speaker 2: your can of gin tone. But I would like to
- 26:15Speaker 2: see your artistic interpretation of how you use.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I will say one thing. At least one of the
- 26:22Speaker 1: four people must have a scrunchy in their hair, and
- 26:25Speaker 1: that must be in the photo.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Oh interesting, Okay, all.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Right, yep. See, if you get the free tickets, you've
- 26:31Speaker 1: got to suck it up and wear a scrunchy. It's
- 26:34Speaker 1: not worth it, is it? People? Oh, you should have
- 26:36Speaker 1: given Julie Fitzgerald hers. Actually, now we think about it.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I should have. I did give her a shout, but
- 26:41Speaker 2: she didn't hear me.
- 26:42Speaker 1: She chose not to because she saw what you were wearing.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Who's the widow in the Yeah, don't look directly at her?
- 26:49Speaker 1: Back away slowly, okay.
- 26:52Speaker 2: So Julie Fitzgerald would obviously be eligible to get a
- 26:55Speaker 2: hand crafted no dribble scrunchy because she is a WindMan
- 27:00Speaker 2: with our wings winner and that's the only way to
- 27:02Speaker 2: get it. We have most states and territories in Australia represented.
- 27:06Speaker 2: We do not have a representative from act NT or Tasmania.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I'm interested to know whether this week's nomination covers one
- 27:14Speaker 2: of those states or whether we're going back to a
- 27:16Speaker 2: state that we've already covered. Kat.
- 27:18Speaker 4: We have got one from one.
- 27:24Speaker 1: See how my voicement all high and excited. This is
- 27:27Speaker 1: from Kathy McDonald. She says, firstly, loving your podcast and
- 27:31Speaker 1: we love you Kathy, so that works well. My nomination
- 27:34Speaker 1: is for Jules Ferlin, a life member of Tigers Netball Club.
- 27:38Speaker 1: She's played coached at Umpied for many years and is
- 27:41Speaker 1: an essential component of our club and has produced two
- 27:45Speaker 1: beautiful girls who also play coach and umpire. There you go,
- 27:50Speaker 1: Thank you Keathy for the nomination. Darwin Tech.
- 27:55Speaker 2: So that's the Nightcliff tigers. I think I used to
- 27:57Speaker 2: live in Darwin far not very far from night people
- 28:00Speaker 2: lived in Fanny Bay Jewels, which is not that far
- 28:03Speaker 2: from you. If you'll your plate for the night. Yeah,
- 28:07Speaker 2: I want you to know that. To get from the
- 28:10Speaker 2: city into fanny May you drive along dick Ward Drive,
- 28:12Speaker 2: which I think is terrific.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Wow, they have no fertility issues in that place.
- 28:17Speaker 2: They well, Jewels, you are the wind beneath our wings.
- 28:21Speaker 2: And thank you for everything that you do for the game.
- 28:24Speaker 2: And I'm sorry, Kathy, I forgot who nominated Jewels.
- 28:27Speaker 1: It was Kathy McDonald.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Thanks Kathy. Yeah, we've just finished saying we love you,
- 28:31Speaker 2: and then I forgot your name, Kathy. But please it
- 28:33Speaker 2: is sincere.
- 28:34Speaker 1: It's fleeting. But sincere.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Back to Catherine's love life.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Dear, there's not enough hours in the day to talk
- 28:46Speaker 1: about that, ladies. Let's move on.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Well, you know, I've got to get out and see
- 28:50Speaker 2: part of Western Australia.
- 28:52Speaker 4: So when do you swim with the sharks? Whale sharks?
- 28:54Speaker 2: Tomorrow is swimming with whale shark Day and it's very
- 28:58Speaker 2: lovely sort of. When I came inside a couple of
- 29:00Speaker 2: hours ago and it was only nine o'clock in the morning.
- 29:02Speaker 2: It was twenty two degrees so beautiful. I've gone and
- 29:05Speaker 2: touched the water in x Mouth Golf and that was
- 29:08Speaker 2: It's a lovely temperature. So yeah, doing that, and then
- 29:10Speaker 2: we'll head down the head down the coast and I
- 29:13Speaker 2: think next week I will be recording from Durian Bay.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Has anyone been eaten by a whale shark?
- 29:18Speaker 2: I just know they're like krill suckers, so they're actually fish.
- 29:23Speaker 2: They are the largest fish in the world, aren't they.
- 29:26Speaker 2: They are neither whale nor shark. I don't think.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Do you know we did that whale shark swim a
- 29:31Speaker 3: couple of years ago, And I'm glad to hear that
- 29:34Speaker 3: the weather's good because when I had a booked, and
- 29:36Speaker 3: I booked well before we left home, twelve months in advance,
- 29:39Speaker 3: and we've got a phone call the day before saying
- 29:41Speaker 3: the waves were too big and they weren't going to
- 29:42Speaker 3: take us out, and they had no bookings for another month.
- 29:45Speaker 3: They had nothing, So as you can imagine, I went
- 29:48Speaker 3: into total meltdown mode and I rang every booking operator
- 29:52Speaker 3: and I finally jagged just one a week later. So
- 29:54Speaker 3: we just stayed around for the week. But I was
- 29:57Speaker 3: so excited. When you go to jump in and you're
- 29:59Speaker 3: in the oce open ocean, right, you can't see the
- 30:01Speaker 3: bottom in the open land, you can't see eything. But
- 30:05Speaker 3: I was so excited that I forgot I had children.
- 30:08Speaker 3: So I just jumped in and swam to the one shark.
- 30:11Speaker 4: We got back on.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Board, and Matthew goes, don't worry me.
- 30:15Speaker 4: I just looked after the kids.
- 30:17Speaker 2: I was like, oh, what a saint. You know, if
- 30:22Speaker 2: Matthew had long hair, we would give him a scrunchy. Actually,
- 30:25Speaker 2: what we do need, Liz, is a photo of those
- 30:27Speaker 2: sock protectors, because we're going to make some.
- 30:30Speaker 4: No dribble sock protectors.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my goodness.
- 30:33Speaker 1: I mean, what can't we do? We need to think
- 30:35Speaker 1: of other things we can turn.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Into make make scrunches.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I think, is well, what we can't do?
- 30:42Speaker 3: I do wonder if the next thing we take on,
- 30:44Speaker 3: like with masts and sewing obs, maybe we do some
- 30:48Speaker 3: crocheting or something.
- 30:49Speaker 4: We do some no dribble crochet.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I'm checking out when that happens.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Just I've been knitting a marine scarf for about fifteen
- 30:56Speaker 2: years and I just I'm hopeless at it.
- 30:58Speaker 1: What's the hold up?
