- 0:02Speaker 1: This is Teddy Tea Pod with Cabinet You guys, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: am so excited to be joining you this week on
- 0:14Speaker 1: Teddy Tea Pod with Dr Tanya Altman. We are all
- 0:17Speaker 1: feeling all kinds of ways these days, from excited to
- 0:22Speaker 1: stress to brain fog, and we have questions about the
- 0:26Speaker 1: vaccine and COVID and our kids and when will life
- 0:28Speaker 1: go back to, you know, in quotes normal. So I
- 0:32Speaker 1: am grateful to bring on Dr Tanya Altman. She is
- 0:35Speaker 1: a U c l A trained pediatrician and a working mom.
- 0:38Speaker 1: She's incredible. You can find her info at Dr Tanya
- 0:43Speaker 1: dot com. Our most popular tea pods are always when
- 0:46Speaker 1: we open it up to the listeners questions, because it's
- 0:50Speaker 1: the questions we all have that just kind of stew
- 0:53Speaker 1: in our own brain. We overthink where we really just
- 0:55Speaker 1: need a professional's help. So thank you so much for
- 0:58Speaker 1: joining us, and we have just we're gonna flood you
- 1:01Speaker 1: with questions. Is that all right? Definitely? I'm ready hit me, okay, perfect?
- 1:05Speaker 1: First one for those who are going vaccine shopping, is
- 1:09Speaker 1: there a vaccination you suggest over the other? So I
- 1:13Speaker 1: know this sounds cliche because you hear it all the
- 1:15Speaker 1: time on the news media from Dr Fauci and everyone.
- 1:18Speaker 1: But really, the first shot you can get is the
- 1:21Speaker 1: best one for you. We really want to get to
- 1:24Speaker 1: hurt immunity. We want to get back to more normal life.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So I want everyone to get vaccinated as soon as
- 1:29Speaker 1: it's their turn. And I really feel that all three
- 1:33Speaker 1: vaccines that are currently available right now in the United
- 1:36Speaker 1: States are safe and effective. I love that. And people, are,
- 1:41Speaker 1: you know, still so afraid? When do you think people
- 1:44Speaker 1: will be in the clear? I did? I did quotes.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I know you guys can't actually see me, but in
- 1:49Speaker 1: the clear, So you mean in the clear to get
- 1:52Speaker 1: back to normal life? Yes, gee, well, um, that's um
- 1:57Speaker 1: a great question, and I wish I had a soball
- 2:00Speaker 1: the answer for sure. I think in Southern California, where
- 2:03Speaker 1: we're both based, things are getting a lot better right now,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and I hope that we will have a little more
- 2:09Speaker 1: normal of a summer. I'm even hoping that I can
- 2:11Speaker 1: have my son's bar mitzpoh with a gathering in our
- 2:13Speaker 1: backyard this summer in southern California. But I have to
- 2:16Speaker 1: say that the reason why Dr Lensky in the CDC
- 2:20Speaker 1: is cautioning everyone to still be careful and not travel
- 2:23Speaker 1: is because there are states where numbers are going up
- 2:26Speaker 1: right now and they are headed to see really unfortunate
- 2:29Speaker 1: situations like we did back in January here in southern California.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So it's gonna depend on where you live in the country.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I think how normal of a summer you will have,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and for kids going to summer camp and kids going
- 2:40Speaker 1: back to school, we're still gonna have some restrictions even
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the fall um, such as masking and distancing, but
- 2:47Speaker 1: it hopefully will be a lot better than it is
- 2:49Speaker 1: right now, and every week and every month we will
- 2:52Speaker 1: get back to a little more of a normal type
- 2:54Speaker 1: of life. Since you brought up masking, is double masking
- 2:59Speaker 1: more active than one mask? Is there a certain mask
- 3:02Speaker 1: you should really be wearing? So for kids, I think
- 3:05Speaker 1: whichever mask they like to wear and they will properly
- 3:08Speaker 1: wear that covers their nose and mouth tightly is fine. Um.
- 3:13Speaker 1: For adults, I think we know that the more layers
- 3:16Speaker 1: the better, right, So if you have a simple to
- 3:19Speaker 1: ply cloth mask and there's not a filter insert, then
- 3:21Speaker 1: I would probably put a surgical mask on first and
- 3:24Speaker 1: then your decorative mask on top. But if you have
- 3:26Speaker 1: a high quality mask that fits properly, that has two
- 3:29Speaker 1: or three layers with an insert a filter, then I
- 3:32Speaker 1: think that is fine to wear. Um. I've been double vaccinated,
- 3:36Speaker 1: so I'm fully vaccinated. It's been more than two months
- 3:39Speaker 1: since my second vaccine, so I've loosened up a little
- 3:42Speaker 1: bit on my mask requirements. Now if i'm you know,
- 3:44Speaker 1: out and about, I might wear you know, a more
- 3:46Speaker 1: fun um just simple to ply cloth mask with a
- 3:50Speaker 1: filter insert. Whereas before I wore my N ninety five
- 3:53Speaker 1: and face shield everywhere. That's what I was gonna ask
- 3:56Speaker 1: about the face shields because I know at the kids
- 3:58Speaker 1: school and stuff like that, though was um, they would
- 4:01Speaker 1: prefer a regular mask. So but I do see some
- 4:05Speaker 1: people out that are just in the shields. Are those
- 4:08Speaker 1: even effective? You know? Shields alone, um, without a mask
- 4:13Speaker 1: are not are not that much. I mean it's a
- 4:15Speaker 1: little layer of protection because you could catch some of
- 4:18Speaker 1: those larger droplets. You know, someone can't really spit on you,
- 4:21Speaker 1: but don't forget some of the smaller particles can fly
- 4:24Speaker 1: out the sides, so you really need to cover your
- 4:26Speaker 1: mouth and nose. Um. Now, there are some cases, such
- 4:30Speaker 1: as the speech therapists in my office. You know, in
- 4:33Speaker 1: certain instances she might just wear a face shield and
- 4:35Speaker 1: stand six feet away from her student or client because
- 4:38Speaker 1: they need to see her lips move um and for
- 4:41Speaker 1: hearing impaired people that might be the only option we have,
- 4:44Speaker 1: but for most people, you really need a mask covering
- 4:47Speaker 1: your nose and mouth. And then one of the most
- 4:50Speaker 1: asked questions that I got is can we please talk
- 4:52Speaker 1: about why once we're vaccinated we still need to wear
- 4:56Speaker 1: the mask. That's a great question. So you know, I
- 5:00Speaker 1: actually have not done a lot different since I've been vaccinated,
- 5:03Speaker 1: other than maybe you know, not go as um not
- 5:06Speaker 1: where my n ninety fives as much since they are
- 5:08Speaker 1: so uncomfortable and wear more regular masks. The reason we
- 5:12Speaker 1: all still need to mask is because even though the
- 5:14Speaker 1: vaccines are very effective and new data shows that it's
- 5:18Speaker 1: a lot less likely that a vaccinated person can actually
- 5:21Speaker 1: catch the virus, be asymptomatic and transmit it, there is
- 5:25Speaker 1: still a small risk there. So instill we until we
- 5:28Speaker 1: really reach hert immunity, which means we have around se
- 5:32Speaker 1: percent of people in our community that either have had
- 5:35Speaker 1: the vaccine or have had COVID and have antibodies. We
- 5:38Speaker 1: really all need to still practice all the public health
- 5:41Speaker 1: measures because otherwise we're gonna keep seeing cases floating around.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So it's gonna be a little bit of time before
- 5:47Speaker 1: we say, okay, we don't need the masks anymore if
- 5:50Speaker 1: you've already been vaccinated, makes sense. And then how come
- 5:54Speaker 1: we're seeing more for the second dose. How come it
- 5:58Speaker 1: seems to be that people are getting that get maderna
- 6:01Speaker 1: are having a stronger reaction than fiser or is that
- 6:05Speaker 1: just one of those like rumors out there that really
- 6:08Speaker 1: isn't true. You know, I think with the second dose
- 6:12Speaker 1: of the vaccine, and it has to do with when
- 6:14Speaker 1: the first dose of the vaccine is the first time
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know your body is gonna make and see these
- 6:19Speaker 1: spike proteins and start making antibody response. So with the
- 6:23Speaker 1: second shot of the vaccine, just like when people who
- 6:26Speaker 1: have had covid or vaccinated, when you already have circulating antibodies,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you do tend to see a little more of an
- 6:31Speaker 1: immune response. So that's why you might feel a little
- 6:34Speaker 1: more of this um of the side effects and immune
- 6:37Speaker 1: response in your body. It's not dangerous, but it can
- 6:40Speaker 1: be uncomfortable if you have you know, fever, chills, aches,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and pains um and I kind of feel that I'm
- 6:47Speaker 1: seeing at the same with my patients. And you know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I'm a pediatrician, but when I say patients, I mean
- 6:51Speaker 1: the parents and the grandparents. I talk to them and
- 6:54Speaker 1: help them out, you know, just as much as I
- 6:56Speaker 1: do my own patients. I feel like it's across the
- 6:58Speaker 1: board with all the vacs scenes um and more so
- 7:01Speaker 1: in people that have had COVID in the past, or
- 7:03Speaker 1: it's the second dose again, because their body has already
- 7:06Speaker 1: seen this spike protein and has some antibody circulating already.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So I know it's a bummer and a little uncomfortable
- 7:12Speaker 1: that you might have to stay home for a day
- 7:13Speaker 1: or two unrest, but I think it is well worth
- 7:15Speaker 1: it in the long run to get that higher level
- 7:18Speaker 1: of protection that the vaccine produces that we know natural
- 7:21Speaker 1: infection with COVID cannot provide. And for those that get
- 7:26Speaker 1: like either the pain in the arm or actually having
- 7:28Speaker 1: stronger symptoms, do you recommend an advil or tail in
- 7:32Speaker 1: all or doesn't make a difference. So I think if
- 7:35Speaker 1: you need, if you're uncomfortable and you need to take something,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I think you can take ibuprofen or a set of
- 7:41Speaker 1: menafit um. Now, when I got my vaccine back in December,
- 7:45Speaker 1: I was one of the first. Back then that was
- 7:47Speaker 1: before they said, hey, hold off on ibuprofen in a
- 7:49Speaker 1: set of menapin until you need it in your body
- 7:51Speaker 1: mounts and immune response. So I actually took a be
- 7:54Speaker 1: proven around the clock um any symptoms because I didn't
- 7:57Speaker 1: want to be uncomfortable and I had to go to work,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and I still mounted a full immune response because I
- 8:02Speaker 1: did blood work to show that. So I do think
- 8:04Speaker 1: with them with the more recent data, I recommend that
- 8:07Speaker 1: people wait until they start feeling uncomfortable, and then if
- 8:10Speaker 1: you're so uncomfortable that you need it, go ahead and
- 8:12Speaker 1: take either one. Some doctors are preferring a sina menafin
- 8:16Speaker 1: over I do profen, I don't really have a preference.
- 8:19Speaker 1: If you need it, I don't want you to be uncomfortable.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Makes sense? And then what would you say to women
- 8:25Speaker 1: who are pregnant, would you wait to get the vaccine
- 8:27Speaker 1: or would you get it wild pregnant. So of course
- 8:30Speaker 1: you should always talk to your own O beguine um
- 8:33Speaker 1: when you're making this decision. But I do feel that
- 8:36Speaker 1: enough pregnant women have gotten the vaccine. Now, pregnant women
- 8:39Speaker 1: were not included in the initial studies because unfortunately we
- 8:42Speaker 1: can't do studies very often on pregnant women, but enough
- 8:46Speaker 1: got pregnant while they got the vaccine. UM. There have
- 8:49Speaker 1: been thousands of healthcare providers that chose to get the
- 8:52Speaker 1: vaccine when they were pregnant UM and the data shows
- 8:56Speaker 1: that it is safe and effective for pregnant women and
- 8:58Speaker 1: breastfeeding women based on what we know so far. And
- 9:02Speaker 1: also we are seeing antibodies in the babies, so that
- 9:06Speaker 1: actually means that it would not only protect you, but
- 9:08Speaker 1: also protect your baby when they are born for a
- 9:11Speaker 1: little bit of time until they are old enough to
- 9:13Speaker 1: hopefully get their own vaccine, which next year we may
- 9:17Speaker 1: be giving COVID vaccines to six month old and older.
- 9:21Speaker 1: So talk to your own doctor. But I would get
- 9:23Speaker 1: it myself if I were pregnant or breastfeeding. So when
- 9:36Speaker 1: do you think kids will start getting vaccinated? And do
- 9:38Speaker 1: you think they're going to make that a requirement in
- 9:40Speaker 1: the schools. So fires are just released their data for
- 9:44Speaker 1: kids twelve through fifteen, and it did show that the
- 9:46Speaker 1: vaccine was a hundred percent effective um and that it
- 9:50Speaker 1: was well tolerated, which is amazing UM. And I think
- 9:54Speaker 1: that's what you know. We're gonna see with Maderna in
- 9:56Speaker 1: the next few weeks when they released their data as well.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So then what they do is something called age d escalation,
- 10:02Speaker 1: where they keep going down lower on the kids ages.
- 10:05Speaker 1: So Fiser is now in their trials for kids age
- 10:08Speaker 1: UM six through eleven, and then after that they will
- 10:12Speaker 1: go down to the younger ones. Even so, I am
- 10:15Speaker 1: very hopeful that by the fall the vaccine will be
- 10:18Speaker 1: available for everyone twelve and up. So that means middle
- 10:21Speaker 1: school and high schoolers will be able to get vaccinated
- 10:24Speaker 1: by the fall UM. And by older boys right now
- 10:27Speaker 1: are twelve and sorry, thirteen and fifteen. They keep they
- 10:31Speaker 1: keep growing. I forget, oh they are. My younger one
- 10:33Speaker 1: is six, so I think my two older boys will
- 10:36Speaker 1: be able to get their vaccine by fall, which is amazing.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I'm hoping even by July so we can go on vacation.
- 10:41Speaker 1: But my six year old the younger kids may not
- 10:43Speaker 1: be until next year UM in terms of will it
- 10:46Speaker 1: be required for schools so usually so the way it
- 10:49Speaker 1: works is right now, the COVID vaccines have something called
- 10:52Speaker 1: an Emergency Youth Authorization eu A. It's gonna take some
- 10:56Speaker 1: time before they get official FDA approval of BACCCENE really
- 11:00Speaker 1: can't be mandated by a state until it's FDA approved,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and historically all vaccine mandates have come from the state level,
- 11:08Speaker 1: not from the school. So I think, although I would
- 11:11Speaker 1: love nothing more than to have all kids vaccinated, I
- 11:14Speaker 1: think it's gonna be another full year before states start
- 11:16Speaker 1: considering should it be mandated for school because I know
- 11:20Speaker 1: in the past for like different summer camps and stuff
- 11:23Speaker 1: like that, not I mean, obviously not the COVID vaccine,
- 11:26Speaker 1: but they've had us go to our pediatrician make sure
- 11:29Speaker 1: that it's filled out, that they're up to date on
- 11:31Speaker 1: their vaccinations, or they can't go to the particular camp.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Like do you think that that is in the few,
- 11:36Speaker 1: maybe not schools, but camps. Do you think that type
- 11:39Speaker 1: of thing is gonna start to rotate over as well?
- 11:41Speaker 1: And potentially could I mean I've been talking to a
- 11:44Speaker 1: lot of summer camps across the country, and some camps
- 11:47Speaker 1: are deciding should we make it a requirement for our
- 11:50Speaker 1: counselors and faculty to get the vaccine um to that
- 11:55Speaker 1: give another level protect, layer of protection for the kids. Um,
- 11:58Speaker 1: I don't think it can be mandated. Hell, it's available
- 12:00Speaker 1: for that specific age group, so I think it is
- 12:03Speaker 1: gonna bury. Um. You know, public schools have to wait
- 12:06Speaker 1: for state guidance. Independent and private schools can make their
- 12:10Speaker 1: own rules. But then again it gets to the whole
- 12:13Speaker 1: you know, like, do you want to mandate it if
- 12:15Speaker 1: it's not yet FDA approved. I think I think it's
- 12:19Speaker 1: gonna be a little bit, a little bit longer before
- 12:22Speaker 1: it is an official mandate. I have heard some colleges
- 12:25Speaker 1: that are gonna be mandating it for the fall, especially
- 12:27Speaker 1: for kids living in the dorms. Right, So you could say,
- 12:30Speaker 1: if you're gonna live in the dorms, it's mandated. If
- 12:32Speaker 1: you're gonna live off campus, we strongly, um, we strongly
- 12:36Speaker 1: encourage it. Um or we expect you to get it,
- 12:39Speaker 1: but they don't want to specifically mandate it yet. Right.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And I actually I my daughter, my one year old,
- 12:46Speaker 1: she had her check up recently, and I she anytime
- 12:49Speaker 1: we go anywhere, it's either she's going to the doctor.
- 12:52Speaker 1: She also has one of those DOC bands, so like
- 12:54Speaker 1: she has stranger danger because she's like you're either taking
- 12:57Speaker 1: me get a shot or to get my helmet adjusted.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Like where are we going? So I asked her, I said, listen,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I saw that, like my gyms and those types of
- 13:04Speaker 1: places are starting to open up. Like what should I?
- 13:07Speaker 1: I'm feeling bad because any time that Dove sees anybody,
- 13:10Speaker 1: she gets scared. She despises being in the car like
- 13:14Speaker 1: she's a complete, you know, quarantine baby. Like should I
- 13:18Speaker 1: be starting to do those things? And she said, listen,
- 13:21Speaker 1: I think you should wait until after spring break see
- 13:26Speaker 1: what happens with the new variant, and know that because
- 13:30Speaker 1: Dove has her siblings, she is having enough stimulation, so
- 13:34Speaker 1: you don't need to have any mom guilt about the
- 13:36Speaker 1: amount of things that she's doing outside of the house.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But what are your thoughts on that? Because I know
- 13:40Speaker 1: there's a lot of us that are just like, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 1: the way I used to take my older kids when
- 13:44Speaker 1: they were babies out to lunch with me every day,
- 13:46Speaker 1: you know, like we did things. And my husband and
- 13:49Speaker 1: I were talking, we've never once gone out to eat
- 13:51Speaker 1: with yeah, you know, and honestly, with the third child
- 13:55Speaker 1: that often happens anyway, right in non COVID times because
- 13:58Speaker 1: it's harder to take three kids anywhere. I mean, I
- 14:01Speaker 1: think it is gonna be a little bit of a
- 14:03Speaker 1: transition for these kids that haven't been out and about
- 14:06Speaker 1: around other people. That said, she is getting so much
- 14:09Speaker 1: love and stimulation from you guys at home, from the
- 14:11Speaker 1: other siblings. I know my six year old has never
- 14:14Speaker 1: had as much contact with his older brothers. Right. I
- 14:17Speaker 1: make them play with them every day, and when I
- 14:20Speaker 1: get home, I also make sure that I really spend
- 14:22Speaker 1: time with him, so I think they will readjust pretty quickly.
- 14:26Speaker 1: That said, you don't have to go from doing nothing
- 14:28Speaker 1: to like, Okay, we're going to an indoor gym class.
- 14:30Speaker 1: What about a park play date with a family, you know,
- 14:33Speaker 1: with one child around her age, right where the kids
- 14:36Speaker 1: are outdoors and playing a little distance, because anything outdoors
- 14:40Speaker 1: is safer than indoors, and especially if the parents have
- 14:43Speaker 1: been vaccinated and the older kids wear masks. So I
- 14:46Speaker 1: think there might be some ways where you could do
- 14:48Speaker 1: a little bit safer interactions so that way she does
- 14:50Speaker 1: get to see kids a little bit. But I don't
- 14:52Speaker 1: think it's absolutely necessary. There's nothing wrong with waiting a
- 14:55Speaker 1: few more months and then starting play dates with her,
- 14:58Speaker 1: But I agree that going to an indoor or play
- 15:00Speaker 1: Jim with a bunch of unmasked one year olds does
- 15:04Speaker 1: make me a little nervous right now, even though our
- 15:07Speaker 1: community rate is really low right now in the areas
- 15:10Speaker 1: that we live in, which is amazing. UM, I would
- 15:13Speaker 1: still hold off on that a little longer. And while
- 15:17Speaker 1: we were just talking, Kyle Richards just texted me and
- 15:20Speaker 1: she's like, Hey, can you please ask Dr Tanya which
- 15:23Speaker 1: is the best vaccine if you have anaphylactic allergies example penicillin,
- 15:28Speaker 1: bees horses, et cetera. Report factor. I have had to
- 15:33Speaker 1: go off topic to ask real quick cause I cannot
- 15:35Speaker 1: forget definitely, so there there really isn't a lot of
- 15:39Speaker 1: data on that. UM. That said, people with severe anaphylactic
- 15:43Speaker 1: allergies have gotten all three vaccines and done fine. Usually
- 15:48Speaker 1: your doctor will say I want you to take your
- 15:50Speaker 1: eppy pen with you. I want you to take Zurchech
- 15:52Speaker 1: with you, UM and let them know, and they're gonna
- 15:55Speaker 1: watch you for probably a half an hour instead of
- 15:57Speaker 1: fifteen minutes after your shot in case you have any
- 16:00Speaker 1: sort of reaction, then you're gonna immediately take that Zrchech.
- 16:04Speaker 1: You know, take your EpiPen if you need it. Um.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I have had doctor friends that have serious anaphylactic reaction
- 16:10Speaker 1: that went to the hospital to get their vaccine with
- 16:13Speaker 1: all of that, and they all did fine. But I
- 16:15Speaker 1: want you to check with your own doctor. UM. I
- 16:18Speaker 1: still think there's a way to safely get you the vaccine.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I just want you to be watched a little bit
- 16:22Speaker 1: more and have all of that medication with you that
- 16:25Speaker 1: you would take if you got that be sting or
- 16:27Speaker 1: had that anaphylactic reaction. And then the next thing is supplements, vitamins.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Is there something you should be taking as a household
- 16:36Speaker 1: that's going to keep you extra protected, Like what's best
- 16:39Speaker 1: for kids, what's best for adults? Like in general, regardless
- 16:42Speaker 1: of COVID or not sure. So I have to tell
- 16:45Speaker 1: you Teddy that, UM. You know, I'm really into nutrition
- 16:48Speaker 1: and supplements and overall wellness. I have a little bit
- 16:50Speaker 1: more of an integrative practice here at Calabas's Pediatric's Wellness Center.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So I do recommend supplements depending on my family's diet
- 17:00Speaker 1: and lifestyle, because it is better to get your nutrition
- 17:03Speaker 1: from food. That said, I find that many kids aren't
- 17:07Speaker 1: getting enough vitamin D in their diet, and so that's
- 17:09Speaker 1: why vitamin D is recommended pretty much for everybody UM
- 17:13Speaker 1: during COVID and doing during cold and flu season. I
- 17:16Speaker 1: have in some cases recommended that my patients take extra
- 17:19Speaker 1: vitamin C extra zinc UM. For my patients that maybe
- 17:23Speaker 1: have some issues UM focusing and concentrating at school, like
- 17:27Speaker 1: maybe a d h D type symptoms, trouble sleeping, anxiety,
- 17:30Speaker 1: or depression, then I'll often use Omega's or magnesium. So
- 17:34Speaker 1: it really depends on the family that I'm dealing with.
- 17:39Speaker 1: That said, the other thing to remember is that supplements
- 17:42Speaker 1: are not f d a M approved or cleared in
- 17:45Speaker 1: our country. In our country, and I recently had a
- 17:48Speaker 1: case with an adult patient UM that had some liver issues,
- 17:53Speaker 1: probably from a contaminated supplement, so I am very cautious UM.
- 17:58Speaker 1: More recently, I'm more cautious about supplements in my patients
- 18:02Speaker 1: UM until we get some oversight here in the United
- 18:05Speaker 1: States or UM. I've been talking to the Clean Label
- 18:08Speaker 1: Project as well about testing certain vitamins and supplements that
- 18:10Speaker 1: I do like to use in my practice. So I
- 18:14Speaker 1: would say, UM, in many cases, I do recommend supplements
- 18:17Speaker 1: for my families, but talk to your own pedatriction of course,
- 18:20Speaker 1: because it's important that they know you know what your
- 18:22Speaker 1: child and what you are on. And why do you
- 18:34Speaker 1: think you know, most of us have more brain fog
- 18:37Speaker 1: since this is all started than than before, Like I've
- 18:42Speaker 1: me personally, even from my own clients myself, just in general.
- 18:46Speaker 1: You know, some days you wake up and you feel
- 18:48Speaker 1: good and you feel present, and then just some days
- 18:50Speaker 1: you really feel like you're just pushing through the fog
- 18:52Speaker 1: to get through. Why do you think that is? Yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 1: you know, I think there's several reasons, right, I mean,
- 18:58Speaker 1: a lot of us are indoors more, I mean luckily
- 19:00Speaker 1: now in southern California, whether whether it's beautiful, So I
- 19:03Speaker 1: let everybody know you need to be outdoors every day
- 19:05Speaker 1: for at least an hour, even those kids that are
- 19:07Speaker 1: on zoom school all day long. Make sure you're geting
- 19:10Speaker 1: enough sleep. I think COVID has added extra stress to
- 19:13Speaker 1: all of our lives. I know, you know, I don't
- 19:15Speaker 1: sleep as well as I used to. Um. I think
- 19:18Speaker 1: we're also worried about everything and trying to be cautious
- 19:21Speaker 1: and not do the wrong thing and not accidentally get
- 19:24Speaker 1: exposed and bring COVID at home so I think it's
- 19:26Speaker 1: just a combination of we all are leading much more stressful,
- 19:30Speaker 1: anxious lives right now. UM, and that is just really
- 19:34Speaker 1: taking a wear and tear on all of our mental health.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Which is why you know, making sure that you are
- 19:41Speaker 1: in a good place, that you're spending time, you know,
- 19:43Speaker 1: for yourself as a mom, because if you're foggy and
- 19:47Speaker 1: stressed and exhausted, you you can't take care of the kids, right,
- 19:50Speaker 1: So it's important to make sure that you take care
- 19:52Speaker 1: of yourself first, and UM, to teach your kids you
- 19:56Speaker 1: know that, UM, sleep and nutrition and stress reduction and
- 20:00Speaker 1: being mindful and sitting outdoors every day and exercising is
- 20:02Speaker 1: so important for their overall well being and those are
- 20:06Speaker 1: those are tools that will really help them as they
- 20:07Speaker 1: get older. I love the outdoors an hour a day
- 20:10Speaker 1: because it really is a game change. I know, like
- 20:13Speaker 1: when I have sunshine, even just to go on a walk,
- 20:16Speaker 1: have a little sunshine, immediately I can like just take
- 20:20Speaker 1: that breath. Um. The next one is on drinking, and
- 20:24Speaker 1: this one comes from Lisa Arenna. How much vodka is
- 20:27Speaker 1: too much vodka? But I mean not just vodka, but
- 20:30Speaker 1: you hear really about a lot of people these days,
- 20:33Speaker 1: they're like, you know, I'm just having a glass of
- 20:35Speaker 1: wine a night to take the edge off or whatever
- 20:37Speaker 1: it may be. What do you think is too much?
- 20:42Speaker 1: So that's a great question. I'm sure that my level
- 20:44Speaker 1: of vodka is different from Lisa's level of vodka. Right,
- 20:47Speaker 1: we can handle every night. Um. So I think again
- 20:50Speaker 1: it goes back to sort of your overall health and
- 20:53Speaker 1: well being and how much you can tolerate. So if
- 20:55Speaker 1: you're a healthy person in your doctor feels that a
- 20:58Speaker 1: glass of wine every night or a few times a
- 21:00Speaker 1: week is fine, then I think that's okay. I would
- 21:03Speaker 1: defer to your to your doctor. But if you find
- 21:06Speaker 1: that you're waking up tired in the morning, that you
- 21:08Speaker 1: can't focus, you can't concentrate, you know, you're just really
- 21:11Speaker 1: run down, I would probably take a cleanse break and
- 21:14Speaker 1: maybe go off of the drinking for you know, a
- 21:16Speaker 1: little while, and try to really focus on nutrition and wellness. Um,
- 21:20Speaker 1: and then when you're feeling back to yourself, then maybe
- 21:23Speaker 1: you can add in the occasional, you know, once in
- 21:25Speaker 1: a while drink of alcohol. And people's favorite question to
- 21:30Speaker 1: ask me is like, if you're trying to be healthy,
- 21:32Speaker 1: what alcohol do you drink And for me, I'm like,
- 21:35Speaker 1: I don't choose to drink alcohol because I'm trying to
- 21:37Speaker 1: be healthy and so I'm gonna have a drink at
- 21:39Speaker 1: something that I like. But what do you think would
- 21:42Speaker 1: is the most I know? You know, for a while
- 21:44Speaker 1: it was I always heard red wine is you know,
- 21:47Speaker 1: the best for the heartet of it, and then I
- 21:49Speaker 1: heard actually it's two cup you know, Like, so what
- 21:51Speaker 1: are your thoughts? So I still think the data and
- 21:54Speaker 1: research would show that red wine is the best for
- 21:57Speaker 1: your heart, it's the best for your cholesterol. Um. Again,
- 22:01Speaker 1: you can talk to your own doctor about that. I
- 22:03Speaker 1: think you know, for some people, hard alcohol is harder
- 22:05Speaker 1: for their liver and for them to you know, metabolize.
- 22:09Speaker 1: So um. I know plenty of the parents and grandparents
- 22:12Speaker 1: in my practice, especially if they've had COVID, if they
- 22:14Speaker 1: have liver issues, they're sticking with that red wine. But again,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I think it's whatever you are used to and whatever
- 22:20Speaker 1: sort of helps you out. Um. As a pediatrician, I
- 22:24Speaker 1: don't often recommend alcohol or he's on a very often,
- 22:29Speaker 1: so I would say as little as you need for
- 22:31Speaker 1: that effect that you want is probably the best solution. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:37Speaker 1: I guess that's the information we all need to hear. Sorry,
- 22:40Speaker 1: I can't say, hey, do three shots of this every day?
- 22:45Speaker 1: You're like what? And then another Okay, this one keeps
- 22:48Speaker 1: coming in about babies, and I haven't noticed this to
- 22:51Speaker 1: be true. I maybe it is, But have you noticed
- 22:55Speaker 1: that babies that have formula have more digestive issues that
- 22:59Speaker 1: baby used to have breast milk. So that's a good question,
- 23:04Speaker 1: and um, often the answer is yes. Now, it's sort
- 23:08Speaker 1: of a multifactorial response, right. We know that breast milk
- 23:12Speaker 1: is the easiest to digest, it's the best for baby,
- 23:16Speaker 1: but also breast milk feeds the good gut bacteria that
- 23:20Speaker 1: and and it's the bad gut bacteria that usually causes
- 23:23Speaker 1: the colic, this tummy issues, the gas, the fussiness. So therefore,
- 23:28Speaker 1: the most ideal situation to have a happy baby with
- 23:31Speaker 1: better digestion and less colic would be um having a
- 23:35Speaker 1: good good gut microbiome, which would mean a normal vaginal
- 23:38Speaker 1: delivery where the mom's um good gut bacteria goes on
- 23:42Speaker 1: to colonize the baby, or supplementing with activated being fantas,
- 23:47Speaker 1: which is the good gut bacteria that research has shown
- 23:50Speaker 1: that babies need for long term health, for their immune
- 23:54Speaker 1: development and for their digestion UM, and then the breast
- 23:58Speaker 1: milk to feed that good gut back area. That would
- 24:00Speaker 1: really be the ideal situation. Now that's not possible for everybody,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and that's okay. So if I have a formula fed
- 24:07Speaker 1: baby that's cology, I might still give them the vivo
- 24:10Speaker 1: probiotic that I recommend because I do feel like that's
- 24:13Speaker 1: the one with the most research behind it. UM, I
- 24:16Speaker 1: might choose a formula that's more hypoallergenic. I think there's
- 24:18Speaker 1: a lot of different factors that come into play. So
- 24:21Speaker 1: and that's sort of what pediatricians are trained to do.
- 24:23Speaker 1: So talk to your pediatriction let them sort of evaluate
- 24:26Speaker 1: your baby if these symptoms are normal or not, if
- 24:29Speaker 1: you need to change what your baby is feeding at
- 24:32Speaker 1: in a probiotic or another type of medication. UM. But yes,
- 24:36Speaker 1: M the So the short answer is yes, historically breastfed
- 24:40Speaker 1: babies do better than formula fed babies in terms of
- 24:42Speaker 1: gut issues. And what about once you transition to you know,
- 24:47Speaker 1: from either breast milk or um formula, do you recommend
- 24:51Speaker 1: like an organic hoal milk or an oat milk or
- 24:54Speaker 1: an almond milk or do you think to each his own?
- 24:57Speaker 1: You know? Sure? So I'm actually a big dairy person
- 25:00Speaker 1: for kids because I do think that dairy um has
- 25:04Speaker 1: the best form of calcium in vitamin D for growing kids,
- 25:07Speaker 1: and there is a lot of data that shows that
- 25:09Speaker 1: kids raised on milk alternatives don't grow quite as well.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Now that said, if my families come to me and
- 25:15Speaker 1: say we're vegan, we drink oat milk, we drink whatever
- 25:18Speaker 1: type of milk it is, I'll say that's fine, let
- 25:21Speaker 1: me see the ingredients because I want to make sure
- 25:23Speaker 1: I supplement their diet with other things that they need.
- 25:26Speaker 1: So um, So, if you're asking me and your family
- 25:29Speaker 1: is fine with dairy, and you guys tolerate dairy, okay,
- 25:31Speaker 1: I would prefer transitioning to an organic whole milk dairy.
- 25:35Speaker 1: But if you want something else, I will work with
- 25:37Speaker 1: my families on the way to get all that proper
- 25:39Speaker 1: nutrition into their kids diet that they need. And I
- 25:42Speaker 1: know that you um have to you have to go soon.
- 25:46Speaker 1: So in clothing, is there anything like that I have
- 25:49Speaker 1: an asked that you think is something that everybody needs
- 25:52Speaker 1: to know, needs to do, needs to hear in this moment.
- 25:56Speaker 1: You know, I think I keep hearing from so many
- 25:58Speaker 1: families just how um hard it's been during COVID right
- 26:03Speaker 1: to be home with their kids, to not be able
- 26:05Speaker 1: to do all their normal activities. And I just want
- 26:07Speaker 1: to remind everyone that this is time that you can
- 26:10Speaker 1: never get back with your family, right, and so if
- 26:13Speaker 1: you really try to make the most of it. And
- 26:15Speaker 1: I know it's exhausting and crazy, right, you know, I
- 26:17Speaker 1: have three kids too, and a husband at home who's
- 26:20Speaker 1: working from home right now. Luckily I get to leave
- 26:23Speaker 1: every day. I think that's what's what saved us a
- 26:24Speaker 1: little bit. Um. But you know, this will end and
- 26:28Speaker 1: your kids are gonna look back and all they're gonna
- 26:30Speaker 1: remember from COVID is how safe they felt at home
- 26:34Speaker 1: with mom and dad or whatever your family unit is,
- 26:36Speaker 1: and all that amazing extra time they spent with you,
- 26:40Speaker 1: and all the experiences that you had as a family.
- 26:44Speaker 1: So as much as you can really try to make
- 26:45Speaker 1: this a safe, fun time for them, that's what they're
- 26:48Speaker 1: gonna take out of this. If you don't expose them
- 26:51Speaker 1: to the stress and the worry about not having enough
- 26:53Speaker 1: toilet paper, they're not going to remember that stuff. So
- 26:57Speaker 1: I think, although I know it's it's very hard for
- 27:00Speaker 1: so many, I think there are ways to sort of
- 27:01Speaker 1: spin this that when we look back ten years from now,
- 27:04Speaker 1: our kids will say, well, remember that year where we
- 27:07Speaker 1: spent at home and we couldn't go on vacation and
- 27:10Speaker 1: we camped in a tent in the family room, and
- 27:13Speaker 1: you know, we ordered our groceries and some days we
- 27:16Speaker 1: had to like make dinner with whatever was in the cupboard.
- 27:19Speaker 1: And how fun was that time? You know? So I
- 27:22Speaker 1: would say, just try to make it enjoyable for your
- 27:25Speaker 1: kids and support them and love them and they will
- 27:28Speaker 1: be fine. Oh. Such good advice and true, so true.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us, and I hope
- 27:35Speaker 1: to see you again soon. Thanks Teddy, I hope to
