- 0:44the city of Charleston. Thanks so much for tuning in this morning. Welcoming
- 0:46into the studio this morning. It is the fourth Tuesday of the month.
- 0:50That means we welcome to the studio. Doctor Stephen garib is here from Green
- 0:52Dentil Group and doctor Carson Henley as well. Good morning, doctor Stephen,
- 0:55How you doing this morning? Doing well? How by yourself. I'm doing
- 0:56well, doctor Carson. How are you. It's a beautiful day. It
- 0:59is beautiful day. Let me make sure that you're oh there, let's try
- 1:02putting it actually in there we go. It is a beautiful day. It's
- 1:04a beautiful day. It's nice to see both of you. I missed the
- 1:08show the last time that that you guys were on. I was on vacation
- 1:11and they get a chance to talk to you. So I I'm glad that
- 1:14I'm here this morning and for us to have our boys. That's right.
- 1:18There you go. We're backing down summer traeing you guys. Pretty good,
- 1:19Everything going all right? Yeah, well every summer we do something right,
- 1:25we go somewhere. Yes, that's right. We want to bring up what
- 1:27we just did. Yeah, day, for sure, it's a great,
- 1:30great time to talk about it. We generally just about all of our doctors
- 1:34go and attend another one of our continuity education events that we like to go
- 1:40to, and that just wrapped up this past weekend for the West Virginia Dental
- 1:42Association. Nice and it's hosted every year at the Greenbrier, which in a
- 1:47bad place to go. And I had had some nice, nice educational events
- 1:53there in social events, so it was a it was a great time of
- 1:56learning and kind of growing and networking with colleagues and dentistry and learned how to
- 2:01protect my back a little bit more. That was a nice session that we
- 2:06had there as well as as well as enhancing the patient experience, which is
- 2:08something that we wanted to talk about a little bit today, is is how
- 2:12when patients come in to our offices, how what they can expect and and
- 2:16how we can and best serve and treat them. So that's what the weekend
- 2:20was really about there and and allowing us to again learn more in developing our
- 2:30profession and also I have a good time with friends there. We were also
- 2:34throw in a big birthday party for my dad. It was gratieth birthday,
- 2:38so we oh, well, happy birth celebrate that a couple of weeks back,
- 2:42but we celebrated this past weekend. So so yeah, eventful weekend and
- 2:46we're back at it, that's right. And on Thursday, I'm a delegate
- 2:49of the West Virginia Dental Association, one of four for our society here in
- 2:53the canov Valley, and so we got to speak with members of the board
- 2:58of dentistry things are on the horizon. We got to speak with other notaries,
- 3:02that's not the right word. People that are notorious, people that are
- 3:06famous, people that change the important people, that's right. And so it
- 3:12was a good time to you know, talk about They were like signing stuff,
- 3:15you know, all kinds of notaries. All right, they brought their
- 3:16seals. It was all official, and so yeah, I think that was
- 3:20a good time to kind of uh not just learn something, but also try
- 3:24to enact change for our our industry, but also for the public in a
- 3:30positive way. And I really enjoyed Friday's lecture with doctor Mark Hymen. Yes,
- 3:34yes, I remember laughing out loud multiple times when no one else was
- 3:38like that was funny. Why are you all laughing? You guys are on
- 3:40the same comedy wavelength. Oh yes, okay, but you got me get
- 3:45in all in all earnestness here and folks that have listened to this program for
- 3:49a long time as Grieve Dental Group has been on here. The one thing
- 3:52that I always like to talk about and you guys and you guys uh u
- 3:55in communication do this, but I like talking about the continuing education what you
- 3:59do in the end industrying things along those lines, because it does partly down
- 4:01the line into better patient experience and things like that. I mean, being
- 4:05a patient, I experienced that. I mean it's it's as pleasant as it
- 4:09can be. To go to a doctor's office. Is about as pleasant as
- 4:11it could be to go there. The the handoff from the HI genis to
- 4:15the doctor and the check out, everything is very flows, very nicely,
- 4:19and you and you feel that experience from the technology to the customer or the
- 4:23patient interactions and everything else. You really feel that care and that attention.
- 4:27I can that's an honest assessment. Well, that's good to hear. That's
- 4:30that's what we strive for for sure. Just speaking with the patient yesterday,
- 4:33he's like, yeah, my son loves coming in here. He's like,
- 4:34you know, we get to lay back in a nice comfortable chair that massages
- 4:40some and watching TV. Here's it, watch TV or whatever. It's fun.
- 4:45It's like, yeah, you get the relax here a little bit.
- 4:46And so so, yeah, we try to make your journey to the dental
- 4:49office as enjoyable as possible. Let me get the information out there. If
- 4:53you have any questions, of course, you can give us a call about
- 4:54your dental hygiene, maybe that of a loved one. You have a procedure

- 5:01it, you want to see how modern technology takes a look at it,

- 5:28Group near you, sort of like a part More store if you're looking for
- 5:33it. One of the things we wanted to talk about this morning, and
- 5:35we encourage your phone calls if you have any questions at all. In regard
- 5:38to this three zerre a four three four five fifty eight fifty eight is a
- 5:41patient experience and new patient experience coming into the doctor's office. You know a
- 5:45lot of this a lot of the time. One of the things that one
- 5:47of the great things that you do, doctor greeb and from experiencing, and
- 5:50I'll talk about this, is you walk a patient through the expectations upon the
- 5:56appointment. So if you come in for an evaluation or you check up whatever
- 5:59my being, there's a further action needs to be taken. You do a
- 6:01great job of laying out the options and also explaining exactly what it's going to
- 6:04mean. It's going to take x amount, it's going to take this so
- 6:06long, it's going to take that long. I ran across a Reddit thread
- 6:10of all things last night looking into dentistry stuff because I'm always looking for inspiration.
- 6:13I didn't really find anything all that much to talk about it. E
- 6:15step for a thread that was somebody talking about having an implant put in and
- 6:19they were struggling with the time that it was taking the implant for each of
- 6:24the steps of the implant from when they started and it's still not ready.
- 6:27It's still not ready. It's still not ready. And I'm thinking to myself,
- 6:29because they were explaining the steps they gone through, I was like,
- 6:30well, I'm familiar with all these steps. This is what you know and
- 6:33doing the show with the doctors, this is what they tell us about.
- 6:36I wonder why this patient is so upset. And as I'm reading, the
- 6:41doctor never really communicated to her what the steps were going to be, what
- 6:45the lengths of the steps was going to be, what each of it detailed.
- 6:47So to her it was way more difficult, and she's like, I
- 6:49should just had the thing pulled. I had no idea it was going to
- 6:51be so hard. And that all comes from just a lack of communication that
- 6:55the doctor. That the process wasn't necessarily wrong, it's just she had no
- 6:58idea. She thought she would go in one day and you know, a
- 7:00week later have a new implant put in, and that everything was good.
- 7:03She just had the wrong expectation. That's the truth. Yeah, I mean
- 7:06that's something that we try to inform our patients about. Definitely, especially with
- 7:11an implant, speaking of that, but just really on anything, the idea
- 7:14is and it frustrates sometimes new patients. They say, I want to come
- 7:17in, just get a cleaning and you know, see what's wrong, Like,
- 7:20well, okay, well let's we need we need to go through our
- 7:23typical steps and procedures to avoid these issues and to better inform the patients and
- 7:29to treat them with the utmost best care that we can. But it always
- 7:33starts with a new patient consultation so we can assess their situation, let them
- 7:39know what type of cleaning they're gonna need, and we can schedule that appropriate
- 7:43amount of time. So when a new patient first comes in, they're going
- 7:46to of course be greeted on the phone when they first call by one of
- 7:50our great receptionists and get them on the schedule, find a good time for
- 7:55them to come in to meet the doctor to get the kind of baseline strays
- 8:00that are needed, and an examination to see exactly what's going on in their
- 8:05mouth that needs to be treated or what type of cleaning to be to be
- 8:09done as well, So they'll come in, we'll assess their paradontal health,
- 8:13their their gum health, what type of cleaning again we want to bring them
- 8:16back for as well as any what we call restorative needs, anything to fix
- 8:20the teeth, you know, anything that's that's bothering them. We want to
- 8:24hear from from those patients what their main concerns are, anything that we can
- 8:28do to help them out, or if they're interested in just keep their mouth
- 8:33the way that it is as healthy as it is and we can help them
- 8:35partner with them to do that, or if they have other issues that they
- 8:41that they want specifically addressed, of course we can address those for them as
- 8:45well. But then what we do is we develop what we call a treatment
- 8:48plan, a plan of action for their dental health, and we try to
- 8:52line that out with the steps that are going to be taken next and the
- 8:56next appointments and the length of time that's going to be and what types of
- 9:03things to expect when they when they come in. And that's as doctor Henley
- 9:07and I were saying, you know, each each procedure has a whole different
- 9:11set of appointments and expectations and steps to the procedure. So so we try
- 9:18to go through those with them to answering those questions and to you know,
- 9:22set aside any any concerns that they may have. And I think the thing
- 9:26that you said that was very important is we ask what do you want because
- 9:31what the patient wants, we need to know what that is so that we
- 9:33can actually perform that action. At the same time, if what they want
- 9:37doesn't align with what is not only possible but is right for the patient.
- 9:43If the patient comes in and says, I just want white teeth, I
- 9:46want some whitening, and they have rampant gun disease, that we could hurt
- 9:50the patient. And so we have to set expectations not only just to listen
- 9:56and ask what they want, but also kind of make sure they know what
- 9:58they need and kind of present it in a way that, yes, we
- 10:01will take care of what you want, but what you need is this.
- 10:03Usually that does align, but sometimes we have to separate that and kind of
- 10:07talk through that. And I think what's funny about the expectations about certain appointments
- 10:13or certain procedures is that sometimes a filling can take five minutes. I've had
- 10:18fillings take in hour just because something didn't go right. After redo it Like,
- 10:22it's funny how you have these expectations. They don't always go right.
- 10:26But as long as you walk through the patient about what you expect to happen,
- 10:31they understand that things can change in the middle of the procedure or maybe
- 10:35that filling that you plan to do. All of a sudden you see something
- 10:39else on another tooth. You take a photo, you show the patient,
- 10:41they go, oh, what's that. I'm like, oh, that's another
- 10:43cavity we need you to fix. You know, let's take care of that
- 10:46today as well, like, oh yeah, okay, for sure. So
- 10:48things can change, but setting that expectation, making sure you know what they
- 10:50want and then knowing what they need and aligning those two is very important.
- 10:54That's what doctor Mark Himon kept saying, Right, that's right, that's what
- 10:56they want exactly right. So yeah, well, don't want a patient to
- 11:00come in and not have their primary concerns addressed, you know. That's that's
- 11:03a big issue, and that that is a common complaint. A lot of
- 11:07times we have patients come in and they come from other offices that say,
- 11:11you know, I went in there and I wanted this one tooth fixed that
- 11:15has been bothering me forever, and we seem to never get around to it.
- 11:18We had other things to be done, and there is some lack of
- 11:22communication there most likely. So we try to be upfront with them and ask
- 11:26them, you know, how we can help them achieve their goals first,
- 11:30and then we have to go through a series of you know, kind of
- 11:33co discovery with them to say, you know, we'll hear are the main
- 11:37issues that you love that word discovery. That's good because patients want to be
- 11:41informed, you know. And what's great now with the technologies that we have
- 11:46that we always talk about with the digital X rays, that we can put
- 11:48up the big X ray as big as the computer screen and we can show
- 11:52them what's going on in their mouth. It's it's a big game changer.
- 11:56Then when before you know, I'm old enough to remember, we're practicing with
- 12:01very small little X rays that that no one can really see except for the
- 12:03light. You see the shadow, this shadow, trust me, there's a
- 12:07lot of that. Well my tooth doesn't hurt. I'm like, well,
- 12:11you can't tell. But this X ray shows that it's really close to being
- 12:15a root canal type of things. So now we can we can better educate
- 12:18the patients uh in real time. And and also our our scanners that we
- 12:22have are fantastic that that scan the mouth and and show the patients their entire
- 12:28mouth and real color on the screen. That we can talk about different issues
- 12:33and many times like wow, that that tooth looks like that, Like,
- 12:35yeah, that that doesn't look very good. Let's let's do something about it
- 12:39before it really turns into a big problem. So it's a lot of patient
- 12:43education and and and figuring it out together. I feel that going back to
- 12:48the the sort of the analogy that I opened up with in reading the social
- 12:52media thread, I kind of feel like that the person that was struggling on
- 12:56the other end, it may have been a case where where commute where the
- 13:00information wasn't shared with and what is much more likely is they didn't find the
- 13:03proper wavelength to communicate on. You know, the doctor was probably trying to
- 13:07share the correct information with him and but just wasn't speaking the language of the
- 13:09patient. There was some kind of miscommunication there, which again is what you
- 13:13guys are talking about, is exactly what you guys try so hard not to
- 13:16do. You go through code discovery for example, you know, you do
- 13:20all of these things to make sure that you're taking care of the patient as
- 13:22well. If a patient is coming to you and you know, maybe they've
- 13:26had as far as they know, decent dental hygiene most of their life,
- 13:28but they've never actually gone to a dentist on a regular basis. Maybe they've
- 13:31only gone when they've had a problem or something like that before. What should
- 13:35a patient get prepared for for coming in for the first time. We talked
- 13:37a little bit about some of the general experiences that are going to have,
- 13:39but somebody, you know, Virgin Territory basically coming in for the first time,
- 13:43to have you as a doctor, to have regular visits and stuff like
- 13:46that. What's the expectation of the patient there? Yeah, sure, Well,
- 13:50first off, I think people need to understand that there's gonna be a
- 13:52lot of paperwork, but everything that we do in our practices, we want
- 13:56to make it easier. So now all our forums are actually and we actually
- 14:01send them some paper copies or send them some PDFs or I forget how it's
- 14:05done, but we can do it digitally and then you can send back to
- 14:09us, because we have to make sure we're doing things legally full stop anyway.
- 14:13But then the first time you walk in, you should expect smiling faces,
- 14:16right, you should expect a smile through the phone. Whenever you're making
- 14:20your first appointment. You should you should expect smiles whenever you walk in the
- 14:24door, not only from the front office, but from the assistance to the
- 14:28doctors. Hopefully we're having good day. Just came. We're always having a
- 14:30good day, and they always uh. And in my office specifically, I
- 14:35think doctor Stephen also has an area where you can get a coffee, you
- 14:37can get a drink. I have water bottles for patients. I even have
- 14:41fancy water. I call it fancy water and sparkling and some yeah is it
- 14:46Lacroix's okay, look and so that's right translated. So I want to make
- 14:54sure that people know that it's going to be comfortable or at least as comfortable
- 14:58as we can make it whenever you first come in. And then we will
- 15:00greet you at the door to come into one of our operatories. And then
- 15:03from there it's kind of greeting them, making sure they're comfortable in the chair
- 15:07in the operatory chair. That's what we call the room where we do the
- 15:11work. It's called an operatory. And then I have blankets. You blankets
- 15:15as well in your office? Sure, yeah. So I have one patient
- 15:18that comes in and goes, where's my blanket, and so like we know
- 15:20to have a blanket ready for him, and he goes, y'all are the
- 15:24best. I love y'all were like a blanket. He goes, Yes,
- 15:28you kind of find that thing that people enjoy. You know. Some some
- 15:31people walk in and take out three water bottles. You're like, sure,
- 15:33go ahead, you know, and that's that's kind of what they want,
- 15:35you know that they feel like they, you know, need to be quenched.
- 15:39So that's kind of the entrance. But then beyond that, is there
- 15:43more to discuss about as one thing that we can also go into. Dale
- 15:48brought up a good point. Someone that maybe has been out of the dental
- 15:52game for a long time. You know, what do you what do you
- 15:54expect there is of course, we want to be as hospitable as possible to
- 15:58bring them in and make them comfortable, but then we're also going to provide
- 16:02them the best care that we can. And that's if you have someone that
- 16:06comes in that that has a specific tooth issue, they only want to address
- 16:10that one issue, maybe to have a tooth extracted. Yes we can accomplish
- 16:12that. But when we bring a pit new patient in to say, you
- 16:17know, hey, I've been out of the dental game for a while,
- 16:19let's get re established. We're going to get do a very thorough job of
- 16:25collecting information, and that begins with the foundation of the patient's patient's gum health,
- 16:30and that's what we're going to have that first examination to assess their current
- 16:34gum condition, because if they have a very detrimental gum condition, if they
- 16:41have a lot of gum disease, periodomical disease, and they want to,
- 16:45you know, build some nice looking fillings or veneers on teeth that are compromised,
- 16:49that's not the right thing to do, and in anyone's you know scenario,
- 16:55it's not going to give them a long term success. So we need
- 16:56to start with the foundation and make sure that we have their gum situation properly
- 17:03assessed and then scheduled to treat that. But at the same time, we're
- 17:07going to go through and look at the teeth themselves, look at the soft
- 17:11tissue, look at the rest of their tongue and cheeks, and make sure
- 17:15there are no lumps or bumps that are concerning to us. Of course,
- 17:18so do an oral cancer examination. We'll also then examine every tooth for health,
- 17:26for cosmetics, and for alignment to make sure that they're not chronically kind
- 17:33of biting sideways on a tooth that's going to cause them a big issue.
- 17:34So there are a lot of different things that go into it, but that
- 17:38comprehensive examination, there's a lot that goes into it. But you're also not
- 17:42going to be there for four hours, so we try to make it as
- 17:47efficient and concise as possible, and then they can expect further communication about that.
- 17:52So we'll go through all of the kind of data gathering there at that
- 17:56appointment, and then we'll develop that treatment plan we talked about early so they
- 18:00can leave the expectations or for them to leave with a concrete path forward for
- 18:07their for their good du for their good dental health. For some people,
- 18:10that's as simple as okay, hey, we're come bringing you back for good
- 18:12cleaning, and that's you know, that's all that you need right now.
- 18:15Other people, it's a it's going to be a multi month process to get
- 18:19them to where we need them to be and they want to be. And
- 18:23then sometimes when patients come in and maybe there's a change in the schedule,
- 18:27it can be as quick as you know what you need a simple cleaning,
- 18:32routine cleaning, and we have an opening right now we can put into to
- 18:36do it and take care of it today. So that's give we have a
- 18:38little flexibility there many times to make that happen as well. And again by
- 18:44experience, I know that all that's to be true, you know. One
- 18:45of the things. We'll go to the break here in just a second,
- 18:47and this this is going to walk somewhat philosophical, maybe, but I was
- 18:49thinking about this when I was driving in this morning, and for me,
- 18:52I think it's true, and I think maybe for a lot of patients out
- 18:53there that there's a there's a part of this. I would use my primary
- 18:57physician as an example. At first, I've shopped around basically my entire life
- 19:02looking for a primary physician. I mean I've had ones that's been fine,
- 19:06ones that have you know, done their job or whatever it is, but
- 19:07nobody that I've really connected with, you know, necessarily you know, a
- 19:11very business like transaction, not that it has to be more than that,
- 19:14but not one that I felt like we were one to say wavelength. Well,
- 19:17for the last several years here in Charleston, I found somebody who I
- 19:18have a really good relationship with. I feel like we have a nice dialogue
- 19:22when I go then and the thing is when I leave the office, even
- 19:26if you know not much was done just to yearly check up, you get
- 19:29blood work, whatever, Everything's fine when I leave the office because we've discussed
- 19:33so much and because we've covered every angle and she kind of knows me and
- 19:37asks questions that I know that are from listening to me from in the past
- 19:40and things like that. When I leave, even if I'm not doing anything
- 19:44else, I feel better for days afterwards. It's like I have that confidence
- 19:47for this one thing in my life. I sat here for a minute and
- 19:49had a conversation with somebody where I wasn't guessing. I wasn't you know,
- 19:52like I was being informed and making informed decisions. And it feels good,
- 19:56you know, to have information being provided to you from an expert telling you,
- 20:00you know, here's your options, or here's what you need to do,
- 20:02here's what this means. And then I have this Now I can make
- 20:04decisions because I'm not guessing. You know, it's not something where you know,
- 20:08I'm just well, I'll just do the less of two evils or whatever.
- 20:11It is, like I have affirmative information that I can act on,
- 20:14and I feel the same way when I leave the dentist office. When I
- 20:15go see you, I have all the information from even if we don't do
- 20:18it anything else it was just a cleaning or anything else. I feel like
- 20:21we got the full check up, we had the full discussion, you know,
- 20:22my history, and I leave there thinking that it was basically a full
- 20:26service, Like I just almost visited a friend. We had our conversation,
- 20:30put everything to rest, and I feel better after leaving. And it's not
- 20:33every appointment with a medical professional that I leave feeling that way. You know.
- 20:38Sometimes you feel like you just got it done, you know, like
- 20:41hey, check it off the list, you know. But when you can
- 20:44really find that connection with with your with your healthcare provider, it makes a
- 20:48big difference in your care and also probably in your relationship with your health care
- 20:52provider, I have to imagine. Yeah, And that reminds me recently as
- 20:55a patient that we're going through some pretty extensive procedures. And he was just
- 21:00concerned through the kind of the temporary phase, even though we discussed things a
- 21:06lot, you know, and and gone through you know, what to expect
- 21:08in the timeline timelines, and he was just feeling uneasy about it and called
- 21:14the office, you know, a little concerned, and one of my police
- 21:17said, you know, he's you know, he's man, he's kind of
- 21:18worked up. So I said, you know, I've got on the phone.
- 21:22I said, come on and let's talk about this a little bit more.
- 21:25And we just came in and just had a discussion and went through again
- 21:27the steps of you know, where we're going, because it was a complex,
- 21:30uh series of procedures and steps that we needed to to kind of work
- 21:36our way through and uh and at the end of the appointment, I mean,
- 21:38that was it. He was just so relieved and we didn't do anything,
- 21:42but we just revisited the whole plan and we said, you know,
- 21:47hey, we've we've got this figured out. Any issues that come up,
- 21:49we're going to figure it out. And like you said, he left and
- 21:53was just he felt good about it after the fact, when he was very
- 21:56concerned at first, because you know, when you're dealing with some people think
- 22:03it's as simple things. I just it's just a tooth or this or that.
- 22:06But when when you're going through the process and you start you know,
- 22:11maybe Google searching some things that you freak out, you know, or what
- 22:15people are doing now using AI, you know, to diagnose their problems,
- 22:18you know. So there's a lot of a lot of things that can can
- 22:22really spook a patient for sure, and so for for us, we say,
- 22:26you know, just come in, let's talk it over and we'll figure
- 22:29it out together. And as you said, whether something is is accomplished that
- 22:33they or not physically, mentally, you have that peace of mind. It
- 22:37makes all the difference in the world. And it's amazing to me that I
- 22:40was well into my fourth decade on this planet before I found relationships like that,
- 22:42and uh for my uh, for my healthcare, it's pretty amazing.

- 25:15morning at three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Three zero
- 25:18four, three four five fifty eight fifty eight, I guess called this morning
- 25:19if you have any questions at all about your dental hygiene about we're talking a
- 25:22little bit of this morning about the patient experience and for for newer patients from
- 25:26maybe folks that have been out of the dental hygiene game for a little while,
- 25:30what you can expect and things along those lines. Kind of a question
- 25:33along those same lines we talked about, like you know, people that maybe
- 25:36haven't gone to a to a dentist in a while. You know, in
- 25:41this area, that's something that you probably have to overcome a little bit.
- 25:44I mean, it's just the numbers are the numbers, you know, and
- 25:45in our region generally, dental hygiene isn't as common, I guess as it
- 25:51is in some areas. You know. I was reading this the other day
- 25:53too, and I think my generation has some some fault with this for whatever
- 25:56reason, Gen X, which is the smallest generation by far of the quote
- 26:00unquote generations that are around right now. Apparently because of the way we were
- 26:04raised, the whole latchkey kid thing and stuff like that, Apparently we push
- 26:08our kids to the doctors much less than than other generations. Like it's something
- 26:14from our parents' where you know, you were just taught to, you know,
- 26:17live with it. You know, your mouth bleeding now, as long
- 26:18as you're not dying, you're fine, you know, suck it up,
- 26:19go outside, you know whatever that the memes or whatever is today. But
- 26:23overcoming some of those barriers with people that are that are doctor shy in general
- 26:27or shy of dental hygiene in general, because for whatever reason they're not used
- 26:32to they never got over the the uh nervousness of somebody poking around in their
- 26:37mouth. It seems completely normal once you've been to the dentist your whole life,
- 26:38But if you haven't had that experience your whole life, it seems strange
- 26:41even as an adult, it can be weird, for sure. Yeah,
- 26:44even as adults. So those that's piece of the education part that you have
- 26:47to do with your patients is in some places, like with my daughter Essie,
- 26:51you know, I had to go through this, so I even asked
- 26:52you guys advice on different things to do to get her broken into, you
- 26:56know, getting used to people poking around in her mouth and getting used to
- 26:57these things. And I took that advice. Worked. It's worked, but
- 27:00it's been a process to like introduce her to these things. And she's a
- 27:03kid, so it's to be expected. That's okay. But if I never
- 27:07did those things and she never went through the process to go to the dentist
- 27:11and she became a teenager and suddenly had to go to the dentist, she's
- 27:15not going to be conditioned to properly understand what's going on. That's the truth.
- 27:18That's that's a good point, and that's a very uh big reason to
- 27:22start early with your children to get them I mean, now, the American
- 27:26Dental Association recommends that you get a child in to the dentist when they get
- 27:32their first tooth, and kids get their first teeth pretty early, so some
- 27:34are born with them and some you know, about six months or so,
- 27:37you're going to start getting them used to that process. It doesn't mean,
- 27:41you know, coming in and having them sit for an hour long appointment,
- 27:44but they're gonna get used to the to the to the environment that yeah,
- 27:51and which are people no good? That was, oh, for sure,
- 27:55that's right. But but yeah, it's it's a different experience that it's best
- 28:03when children are exposed to earlier. And then then you don't turn you know,
- 28:07you don't turn around and have an eighteen year old that's never been to
- 28:10the dentist and right, you know, scared to death of it. For
- 28:11sure, there's got to be folks, And this was us And this is
- 28:14the reason I bring it up, because we had to do a lot of
- 28:17work to overcome this. But when our kid was born, it just coincided
- 28:22perfectly with the onset of the COVID pandemic. You know, when she needed
- 28:26to start going to doctors and stuff for the first time, for hardcore stuff.
- 28:30You know, she was getting her regular checkups and everything, but when
- 28:32she needed to start going to the dentists and start doing all that, it
- 28:33was right in the middle of COVID when you couldn't go to these places or
- 28:37it was like a pain in the rear to even try to go, and
- 28:40it's like, why am I taking a kid that barely doesn't have any teeth
- 28:41at the dentists at test point when you have to go through all this stuff
- 28:44to get there. And so there's probably a whole lot of kids out there
- 28:47around that age that that also went through that, you know, that that
- 28:51didn't get that normal integration that they might get from their parents because they couldn't
- 28:55at the time. And hopefully we've come to the point where we were getting
- 28:57past some of those struggles, but I know there's a lot of people well
- 29:00that are still shy about going to the doctor's offices and things like that out
- 29:02there, and that's something that we need to overcome still because you've got to
- 29:04get people into to take care of their dental hygiene. I mean, that's
- 29:07something that we know. And as as more and more is revealed about the
- 29:11relationship of the body and the different medical fields overlap, I mean, dental
- 29:17hygiene is a big part of that, oh for sure. And I think
- 29:19it is important to say whenever a kid comes in it's less important for the
- 29:23dentists to see the kid, and more important for the dentists to talk to
- 29:26the parents. Yeah. Yeah, that makes the parents are the ones that
- 29:29are taking care of the kid, because someone who's six months old is unable
- 29:33to understand or COMPREHENDI you're not lecturing the baby. Now, listen here,
- 29:36your little baby, your gumm you little gummy fane car you suck your thumbs
- 29:41what that out of your mouth? And look me in the eye when I'm
- 29:42talking to you. Exactly. Yeah, my girls never listened to me even
- 29:45now they still don't anyway. And I think the second thing is, yes,
- 29:49you need to condition them, very important to condition them, but you
- 29:53can actually harm them, not harm them, but harm their attitude towards dentist
- 29:57if you do harm them. And so there are times when I have a
- 30:00young a young patient and they are not having it that day, and I
- 30:04go, you know, I don't want to make a scar in their life,
- 30:07a memory that sets in stone where they go. Dnnis bad, you
- 30:11know, going to the dentist. The environment is bad. So I always
- 30:14like to end on a good note no matter what. Now if there's important
- 30:18work that needs to be done, and I will refer immediately. But if
- 30:19I don't see anything we took a quick cursory look, you'll be like,
- 30:22hey, we did something, we made improvements. It's always about those baby
- 30:26steps literally because there are babies, but baby steps to make them kind of
- 30:30be comfortable with the environment. So it is good to get them in,
- 30:34but you also don't want to get them in and force them to like us.
- 30:37They will like us eventually. It is a good way of saying it's
- 30:41the it's a slow exposure type of thing sometimes with some individuals, but yeah,
- 30:45we're happy to do that as well. And setting those expectations are very
- 30:51important. And we're talking seem to be talking about children and the dentists,
- 30:56but that goes back to the parents right as well. You know, being
- 30:59sure to show them, tell them what to expect, you know, rehearse
- 31:03things. And that's something that my wife is a hygienist and had a lot
- 31:07of good training in and when our children were starting to get to that age.
- 31:11You know, I'm a dentist, but you know they're they even needed
- 31:15to practice a little bit on how to how to behave in the dental office.
- 31:18So sitting them down at home and practicing with a with a spoon,
- 31:22you know, with children that might be a little bit fearful. Just giving
- 31:25them, you know, something to expect, what to expect when they get
- 31:27in there is very very important and beneficial for sure. How about somebody that's
- 31:32coming that's relocating to West Virginia and they're obviously they're looking around to get their
- 31:37dentists. They're coming to your office for the first time. They decide they're
- 31:40going to come Greeve Dental Group. Anything special that person should be aware of
- 31:42for the first time as a veteran of going to the dental office, that
- 31:47might be a little different at at degree Dental Group. Well, people coming
- 31:51from out from outside of the area and it's just West Virginia hospitality that need
- 31:55to be used to, you know, that's it's a whole different and the
- 31:56act all don't know where they're from, right, But yeah, it really
- 32:02is amazing people coming from other areas, what the differences in treatment and what
- 32:09they expect. It can be kind of shocking to us many times, but
- 32:15it's generally a more laid back, comfortable type of environment that they're not used
- 32:22to. If you think about larger cities, many times dental offices are closer
- 32:27to hospitals and they're just a lot of volume coming through there. And think
- 32:31about a typical medical office experience can be quite sterile and not personal. So
- 32:39that's kind of the opposite of what we do in our offices and make it
- 32:44a whole more welcoming, hospitable environment basically. And then also the fact that
- 32:52many times we can do in our offices most of the treatment that patients need,
- 32:59because if someone's coming from a larger metropolitan area, there are there many
- 33:05times it seems like a dentist on every corner and then a specialist on every
- 33:07other corner, right right, So what happens is that you go to the
- 33:10dentist for your cleanings and maybe some fillings, but then you get sent somewhere
- 33:15else to do anything else and uh. And we try to do everything at
- 33:20the highest quality level possible within our offices to keep our patients from running around
- 33:25and they that's one of the biggest compliments, the most frequent compliments that we
- 33:31receive is that, Wow, I mean I don't have to go here or
- 33:35there for that, this or that, and and we're happy to treat them
- 33:38there under the same roof having lived around a little bit with the different experiences.
- 33:43I've always kind of equated when I've when I've come to greeb Dental Group,
- 33:46you get sort of the country doctor Viob but with the modern conveniences of
- 33:52like a metropolitan area or something. Yeah, I'll think that because I mean
- 33:55that, let's let's generally how it feels. You have the friendliness when you're
- 33:59going to go see you know, doctor Smith down by the down by the
- 34:01gas station, you know, around the corner from the farm or whatever.
- 34:04You know, who's opener makes a house calls still to the stay. I
- 34:09probably should have I probably should have done that. You're absolutely, you're right,
- 34:14But you know, there is I mean, that's the type of service
- 34:16that that folks may be coming from certain communities are used to. But also
- 34:20maybe some of the detriment there is you don't have maybe a lot of the
- 34:23technology that's available at another place. You have somebody that's that's a great steward
- 34:27of their of their patient base, but maybe doesn't have the ability to get
- 34:30some of the technological advancements that's come along. And then you go to a
- 34:34super metropolitan area and you maybe get a more sterile experience where sure they have
- 34:38everything that you could possibly need, but you just get go from one place,
- 34:40like you talked about, one place to another to another, and you
- 34:43never get to really know anybody. Maybe you get the job done, but
- 34:45you can't remember anybody's name. You get the best of both worlds to coming
- 34:49to gree Dental Group. You get somebody that knows your name and you talk
- 34:51to that has the personal care, but you also have world class care that
- 34:54can that's right at your fingertips. That's a great I mean, it's a
- 34:58great position to be in. On I was sitting in a in a CE
- 35:01course, a continuing education course not maybe a year ago, and there was
- 35:06someone from Texas, my home state, that came in was was lecturing us,
- 35:09and I forget where and when, but he was talking about implants and
- 35:13how to place them and all this stuff, and come to find out at
- 35:15the end he goes, oh, well, here's my specialist that places all
- 35:17of them for me. And I'm like, you don't even place them your
- 35:20something of your lecture And I was like, can I teach you because I
- 35:22placed them? It felt kind of this disingenuous, I guess in a way,
- 35:28but I think the way I describe our offices, write this down doctor
- 35:31Steven extremely professional yet informal, informal, very nice. Once I said it
- 35:38wasn't that great, but you know it still coun worksmith that a little bit
- 35:42more. But you know, we get we get the point. But that's
- 35:45that's something that we definitely strive for, is that you know, that patient
- 35:47connection and as well as top notch care. And that's something that being a
- 35:54a lot of most of our dentists are West Virginia trained dentists aside from this
- 36:00doctor Henley guy, but I mean he does have trained him into our waist,
- 36:06that's right, but no, practically speaking. That's another characteristic of WVU
- 36:13dental grads is that we are very broadly trained because WVU is the only dental
- 36:19school in the state. You go out to California and there fifteen, you
- 36:22know, and there are in other states, you know, many many dental
- 36:25schools, and they are trained more for the academic side. In at WVU.
- 36:31Classically, from day one, we've been training dentists to be able to
- 36:36be dropped in rural Preston County and be able to do everything you know,
- 36:42right there. And that's something that being involved with organized dentistry is Doctor Henley
- 36:46and I are have been. We know from other dentists and other dental schools
- 36:52that they are not that they don't have that broad of a base of clinical
- 36:57training. So that's something that we really take of manage up in our offices
- 37:00too. Man. That that is great information and great insights from doctor Greeb.
