- 0:00Speaker 1: But as we know, hundreds of Territorians will be able
- 0:02Speaker 1: to become teachers, nurses and engineers for free, with more
- 0:06Speaker 1: than eight hundred places allocated to Charles Darwin University. So
- 0:11Speaker 1: the eight hundred and thirty one places representing more than
- 0:14Speaker 1: twenty nine million dollars in funding a part of twenty
- 0:17Speaker 1: thousand places allocated to universities across Australia ahead of the
- 0:21Speaker 1: Albanese government's first budget tomorrow.
- 0:24Speaker 2: So in total across the.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Nation there's going to be four thousand and thirty six places.
- 0:30Speaker 1: They've been allocated to education, two thousand, six hundred to nursing,
- 0:34Speaker 1: twy two hundred and seventy five to information technology, two thousand,
- 0:39Speaker 1: seven hundred and forty to health, and one thousand, seven
- 0:42Speaker 1: hundred and thirty eight to engineering. Now the Member four
- 0:46Speaker 1: will the Member for Solomon, Luke Gosling joins me on
- 0:49Speaker 1: the line right now to tell us more.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Good morning to you.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Luke, Hi Katie, how are you?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Good now, Good to have you on the show.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Obviously a massive announcement when you talk about this, twenty
- 0:59Speaker 1: nine nine million dollars in funding and eight hundred and
- 1:03Speaker 1: thirty one places for the Northern territory when it comes
- 1:06Speaker 1: to UNI. Look why has the government decided to go
- 1:09Speaker 1: down this path.
- 1:12Speaker 3: It was part of our election campaign commitments to around
- 1:16Speaker 3: Australia to help more people into TAFE with many many
- 1:25Speaker 3: thousands of hundreds of thousands of positions around the country,
- 1:29Speaker 3: but also university and we've got eight hundred and thirty
- 1:33Speaker 3: one additional UNI places at CDU free free training for teachers, nurses,
- 1:41Speaker 3: engineers and IT people and the rest will be in
- 1:46Speaker 3: areas of a skilled worker need. And really really happy
- 1:53Speaker 3: that we've been able to announce this in the lead
- 1:55Speaker 3: up to the budget tomorrow.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So how exactly is it going to work? Will the
- 2:01Speaker 1: cost of their entire degree be covered by the federal government.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It's going to provide extra places for pre funded places
- 2:09Speaker 3: for people studying bachelor and sub bachelor courses, the sub bachelor,
- 2:16Speaker 3: the diplomas and so forth, which is going to be
- 2:20Speaker 3: grateful for people and makes it more accessible, this higher
- 2:24Speaker 3: education more accessible. What's not in the announcement of today though,
- 2:28Speaker 3: is the tape training, the vocational training, which is essential
- 2:34Speaker 3: because we've got the skill shortages that everyone is well
- 2:38Speaker 3: aware of and this will train up territorians for those jobs,
- 2:42Speaker 3: and there'll be people coming in the state as well,
- 2:45Speaker 3: and we'll link them up with the jobs that will
- 2:47Speaker 3: come from the extra infrastructure that's been funded in tomorrow's
- 2:50Speaker 3: budget as well, and that bodes well for sustainable development
- 2:55Speaker 3: of our population and not just in Darwin and Palmerston
- 3:00Speaker 3: down the track as well.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And so so there are going to be tape places
- 3:04Speaker 1: as well when it comes to that side of things.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it wasn't part of today's announcement that that's separate,
- 3:13Speaker 3: but CDU are doing a lot of work on their
- 3:16Speaker 3: tafe sector and there's the marine and aviation sectors in particular,
- 3:23Speaker 3: but all through our economy there's a massive need for
- 3:26Speaker 3: more trained up territorians. So and making it free just
- 3:32Speaker 3: makes it more accessible and of course with the increased
- 3:35Speaker 3: cost of living, it means that it's going to allow
- 3:39Speaker 3: Territorians to get ahead and it's an investment in our future.
- 3:42Speaker 3: And eight hundred and thirty one places is massive and
- 3:46Speaker 3: twenty nine million dollar injection into our university and we've
- 3:50Speaker 3: got the campus coming along well in the city. It
- 3:53Speaker 3: just bodes well for the future.
- 3:55Speaker 1: So eight hundred and thirty one places. Sorry, I'm just
- 3:57Speaker 1: trying to wrap my head around it. So that's for
- 3:59Speaker 1: the UNI to But then is there additional ones when
- 4:02Speaker 1: it comes to your apprenticeships and that kind of thing
- 4:05Speaker 1: or traineeships?
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yep, yeah, thousand, a thousand of those thousands, one thousands. Yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 3: So if I can talk about it at another time,
- 4:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 1: That's all right, No, no, all good. I'm just trying
- 4:20Speaker 1: to wrap my head around it. So we'll make sure
- 4:22Speaker 1: we pin you down about that later in the week.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Then once that detail comes out. But looke, just with
- 4:27Speaker 1: these just to go back to, you know, to how
- 4:29Speaker 1: it's all going to work. So obviously it means there's
- 4:31Speaker 1: eight hundred and thirty one additional places.
- 4:34Speaker 2: It is really aimed at, you.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Know, people who maybe come from regional and remote areas,
- 4:39Speaker 1: indigenous students, poorer background. So does it mean that they
- 4:43Speaker 1: won't they're not going to have to pay for those
- 4:45Speaker 1: UNI degrees.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, they're for there are free places, additional places funded
- 4:52Speaker 3: by the Commonwealth yep. And it's it's really significant, and
- 4:59Speaker 3: it's on top of the infrastructure funding that we announced
- 5:04Speaker 3: last week was part of the election campaign that we're
- 5:07Speaker 3: committing to that's two point five billion in those logistic hubs,
- 5:12Speaker 3: the roads and the middle arms development. We obviously are
- 5:16Speaker 3: going to need a lot more people. Everyone's aware of that.
- 5:18Speaker 3: We're putting extra resources in the Department of Immigration where
- 5:21Speaker 3: we need skilled workers in the meantime. But this means
- 5:25Speaker 3: that in terms of TAFE vocational education training at CDU,
- 5:31Speaker 3: but also the sub bachelor and bachelor courses, the whole
- 5:35Speaker 3: range of schools courses that we need. This is a
- 5:39Speaker 3: really significant investment into those.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it most certainly is, and like you've touched on there,
- 5:43Speaker 1: it's no doubt going to help with the skill shortage
- 5:46Speaker 1: in the long term, but like you've also touched on,
- 5:49Speaker 1: there does need to be some work in the short term.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Can we expect some further announcements in the coming days
- 5:54Speaker 1: when it comes to short term.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, there would be detailed in the budget the extra
- 6:01Speaker 3: resources that are going into the Department of Immigration. I
- 6:04Speaker 3: spoke with the Minister this morning. Obviously we're not the
- 6:07Speaker 3: only regional area of Australia that's really struggling, So the
- 6:11Speaker 3: message from business is loud and clear. We've got record
- 6:14Speaker 3: low unemployment, but we also recognize that we've got a
- 6:19Speaker 3: lot of territorians that are unemployed that can be employed
- 6:23Speaker 3: given the right support and you touched on that Cody
- 6:27Speaker 3: where these places whether they be take and I'll articulate
- 6:31Speaker 3: that later, but also in at CDU, we want to
- 6:35Speaker 3: make sure that people living in the regions and the
- 6:37Speaker 3: remote areas of the territory get the school education that
- 6:41Speaker 3: they need to get to a position where they can
- 6:43Speaker 3: take on some of this training for the jobs that
- 6:47Speaker 3: we're going to have here increasingly in the territory, particularly
- 6:49Speaker 3: when it comes to renewables and in all sectors really
- 6:54Speaker 3: across the economy.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Now, Luke, I know that we've been told to prepare
- 6:58Speaker 1: for a frugal federal budget. In some ways, some people
- 7:03Speaker 1: maybe saying that it doesn't sound like it, or it
- 7:06Speaker 1: doesn't sound as though the government's really tightening the purse
- 7:08Speaker 1: strings based on some of the announcement that we've already
- 7:11Speaker 1: had for the Northern territory.
- 7:12Speaker 2: What would you say to those people.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Well, I'm really proud that this The work we've already
- 7:20Speaker 3: done in increasing lower wages people on the minimum wage,
- 7:26Speaker 3: for example, is helpful for those people struggling with the
- 7:29Speaker 3: cost of living, but also productivity enhancing work that will
- 7:33Speaker 3: be reflected in this budget is the cheaper childcare from
- 7:36Speaker 3: first July next year, which will help families cheaper medicines
- 7:40Speaker 3: that we've already announced, but also the extended paid print
- 7:44Speaker 3: will leave just mean that young families are going to
- 7:46Speaker 3: get more of a hand and that's really important. But overall,
- 7:50Speaker 3: there has been some projects that have been been thankfully,
- 7:55Speaker 3: I haven't heard of any from the Northern Territory. We'll
- 7:57Speaker 3: wait and see for tomorrow. But around the country there
- 8:00Speaker 3: have been some projects. There were really a bit of
- 8:02Speaker 3: pork barreling and some coalition seats that we're axed, but
- 8:06Speaker 3: we've looked at them across the board and saying where
- 8:09Speaker 3: the infrastructure spending makes sense and where is it going
- 8:12Speaker 3: to enhance our economy and if there was a wasteful
- 8:16Speaker 3: pork barrowing exercise, people will see in the budget where
- 8:21Speaker 3: some of those projects have been acted well.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Luke Gosling, the Member for Solomon, no doubt we'll have
- 8:26Speaker 1: some further detail tomorrow night when that budget is handed down.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Hopefully we'll be able to catch up with someone from
- 8:32Speaker 1: the federal government to find out a bit more detail
- 8:34Speaker 1: and what it means for the Northern Territory.
- 8:37Speaker 2: On Wednesday,
