- 0:12Speaker 1: M Return to Glory Podcast, September four. It's Akron Week.
- 0:24Speaker 1: The Zips, Hunter Zarbadiki, Austin Rose, Dakota Free Tag, the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Big Mighty Actors Zips come to Memorial Stadium after a
- 0:34Speaker 1: ten zero shutout loss at home to Wyoming last week.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Big scared here.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I honestly, I was just telling you before I got on,
- 0:46Speaker 3: I was like, I didn't realize that the Zips we
- 0:49Speaker 3: were this bad. I say that we probably gotta you know,
- 0:53Speaker 3: lose or barely squeaked by a wind.
- 0:55Speaker 2: But I feel all right. This week feels better than
- 1:01Speaker 2: last week.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Hey, this is this is my team.
- 1:04Speaker 5: I played multiple dynasty seasons within a college football on
- 1:06Speaker 5: the video game, and let me tell you, they suck.
- 1:13Speaker 4: And it's not it's not me that sucks, it's them.
- 1:18Speaker 1: You sure about that?
- 1:20Speaker 6: Yeah? Uh, the Zips of Akron just I don't know, Austoin,
- 1:31Speaker 6: to your point, I don't think they're very good.
- 1:35Speaker 1: We've had some teams come in here from the MAC
- 1:38Speaker 1: Northern Illinois beat US a few years ago. Even some
- 1:43Speaker 1: lower level or FCS teams come in that you know,
- 1:48Speaker 1: you might have a little bit of cause of concern.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I don't. I don't have any here yet is one
- 1:54Speaker 1: hundred percent chance to win an option? Or do we
- 1:58Speaker 1: save that for next week?
- 2:02Speaker 4: Uh? Good, next week's team beat Acron.
- 2:07Speaker 1: This that's I mean, yeah, what what? What? What way
- 2:13Speaker 1: you do? I again, overlooking a team is never good.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I know there are obvious teams obviously prepping and doing
- 2:20Speaker 1: Accron stuff this week. I mean, I think you would
- 2:23Speaker 1: be anyways, but jokingly said, focus on Michigan this week.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Oklahoma plays Michigan. Nebraska doesn't for a couple of weeks,
- 2:31Speaker 1: but should be preparing for Michigan. That's obviously an extreme,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but there are a lot of things I think that
- 2:42Speaker 1: the coaching staff, specifically after hearing the coordinators talk on Tuesday,
- 2:48Speaker 1: that they want to work on and focus on before
- 2:52Speaker 1: we get specifically into Accron stuff. We're a week from
- 2:59Speaker 1: the Cincinnati win, and I'm stealing this topic a little
- 3:05Speaker 1: bit from the Nick Bob podcast, which is one I
- 3:08Speaker 1: really enjoy listening to. The general consensus thoughts from the fans.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Was what, there's a little bit of not quite the
- 3:23Speaker 3: sky has falling, but there's a little panic online. I mean,
- 3:28Speaker 3: people were pretty critical of the win, at least when
- 3:33Speaker 3: I from when I was reading them like the you know,
- 3:36Speaker 3: the substacks and the subreddit that that level of fan Now,
- 3:42Speaker 3: I don't know, but you know, the World Herald is
- 3:44Speaker 3: putting out or what kind of But I never really
- 3:47Speaker 3: trust the World Herald to have a good pulse on
- 3:48Speaker 3: what the fans are feeling, because they they're a little
- 3:50Speaker 3: puff piec at times. But there was a lot of
- 3:57Speaker 3: there is a little bit of like, oh like Yllan
- 4:00Speaker 3: Rayla sucks, a lot of a lot of critiques of
- 4:04Speaker 3: Dylan Royla, a lot of and I mean, we talked
- 4:08Speaker 3: about some of our concerns with the defensive line and stuff,
- 4:11Speaker 3: but I don't I felt we weren't as sky is
- 4:14Speaker 3: falling as as kind of what seems like online. Now,
- 4:18Speaker 3: obviously the people online are going to be the near
- 4:21Speaker 3: extremes that are posting and commenting, so I can see that.
- 4:25Speaker 3: But that's what I saw. I don't know what you
- 4:27Speaker 3: guys saw.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I yeah, I saw a lot of we sucked, like
- 4:33Speaker 5: we're terrible, But it's like, I barely I barely saw
- 4:37Speaker 5: any anyone like pumped about the wind online.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I don't think I saw anyone. There were a couple
- 4:42Speaker 2: of people.
- 4:43Speaker 3: There are a couple of people like hey, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 3: like they respond to someone and be like, well, we
- 4:48Speaker 3: you know, we got the win.
- 4:50Speaker 5: But it's it's like at the fans completely forgot the
- 4:54Speaker 5: last seven years.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was like.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Okay, and in the one score they've lost all of
- 5:02Speaker 5: them with ruled most of them. It's like you finally,
- 5:06Speaker 5: you finally got that monkey after back is a one
- 5:09Speaker 5: score game against it And who knows made Sencinna's given
- 5:13Speaker 5: me be good?
- 5:13Speaker 4: I don't think so, but you never know.
- 5:17Speaker 5: And seeing all these other teams that sucked Week one,
- 5:19Speaker 5: all you want to do is get out of Week
- 5:20Speaker 5: one with a win.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that, guys, I think it's spot on. And to
- 5:26Speaker 1: add to that what you said back about Cincinnati, we
- 5:29Speaker 1: don't know, and the fans and people like, I think
- 5:36Speaker 1: people are relieved that we want I mean, if we
- 5:38Speaker 1: would have lost place would have exploded Nebraska Nation. But
- 5:44Speaker 1: I do think that people were disappointed and relieved that
- 5:47Speaker 1: we won. But overall came out of the game man
- 5:53Speaker 1: wanting a lot more and regardless of the opponent. And
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'll say that fans, media, media included. I mean, you know,
- 6:03Speaker 1: we had our list of things as well. Why why
- 6:07Speaker 1: is that? I mean, have fans have the meatia. I
- 6:13Speaker 1: think the really good point that Nick Maiden, I'll repeat
- 6:16Speaker 1: it here because I loved it. It's because we know
- 6:21Speaker 1: what a successful program is at Nebraska. It's a whole
- 6:27Speaker 1: expectation thing, and we love talking about expectations here on
- 6:30Speaker 1: the podcast, especially a lot of these older fans. We
- 6:35Speaker 1: know what really good programs are supposed to do. To
- 6:42Speaker 1: Cincinnati now, they would say they realize we're not there,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but they want to be there, and they know what
- 6:48Speaker 1: it should look like. And when you hear comments from coaches,
- 6:53Speaker 1: media players, whoever else that may indicate that we are
- 7:00Speaker 1: there or getting close to there, we just put in
- 7:04Speaker 1: a picture of our minds what that game should look like.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And so I think, and then the flip flop of
- 7:11Speaker 1: that is Nebraska basketball right where we don't know what
- 7:16Speaker 1: it looks like.
- 7:17Speaker 2: We have not worn success right, any form of success
- 7:21Speaker 2: is like what like.
- 7:23Speaker 1: When we win a game, it's great. When when we
- 7:26Speaker 1: are in the bubble talk to go to the NCTATE Tournament,
- 7:31Speaker 1: it's great. Where can you imagine if a if a
- 7:35Speaker 1: Kansas or a Duke or North Carolina, Well, North Carolina
- 7:39Speaker 1: kind of was there a couple few years ago was
- 7:41Speaker 1: in our shoes in basketball hotly cow winning by six
- 7:46Speaker 1: to Wake Forest would be the end of the world
- 7:49Speaker 1: to them, you know, but you know we played Wake Forest,
- 7:54Speaker 1: we beat them. Hell yeah, we beat a power of
- 7:56Speaker 1: five school, no matter how. So it's just a matter
- 7:59Speaker 1: of expectations and perspective and that's where de Braska football
- 8:03Speaker 1: has been it always will be, at least for the
- 8:06Speaker 1: next several years until the older generation that watched it
- 8:11Speaker 1: starts to die off, unfortunately. But you know what I mean,
- 8:14Speaker 1: it's just it's it's an expectation thing that only Nebraska fans,
- 8:22Speaker 1: not only but that's how we're thinking about it.
- 8:26Speaker 3: When you hear, I mean, to another extreme Alabama fans,
- 8:32Speaker 3: their sky's falling. They lost by a touchdown to a
- 8:35Speaker 3: team that was you know, thirteen and or yeah, thirteen
- 8:39Speaker 3: and oh two years ago, twelve and oh, I guess
- 8:41Speaker 3: the bowl game. But they're already talking like man looking
- 8:45Speaker 3: at the buyout for Kalin de Boyer.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 8:48Speaker 3: They lost what three games last year, then they lose
- 8:51Speaker 3: Week one this year and they're like, we're you know,
- 8:55Speaker 3: we're garbage, and we're like, man, we would we have
- 8:57Speaker 3: taken nine to three and a heartbeat. We would have
- 8:59Speaker 3: taken a seven point close loss to Florida State as
- 9:03Speaker 3: a home opener.
- 9:05Speaker 2: We were have taken that.
- 9:06Speaker 4: You know, So I don't.
- 9:12Speaker 5: I don't think this guy's falling a much in Lincoln
- 9:13Speaker 5: as in Tuscalusave. But but uh, do people forget Nebraska
- 9:20Speaker 5: just made their first ball game in seven years? And
- 9:23Speaker 5: do they forget the Northwestern game Week one? Do they
- 9:26Speaker 5: forget the Illinois game Week one?
- 9:29Speaker 1: I do. I don't say they forget it, but I
- 9:31Speaker 1: just think there's a there's a level of in the reset.
- 9:35Speaker 1: There's there's a there's a level of expectation and a
- 9:37Speaker 1: level of a mindset that everybody has in the state.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And I'm including ourselves in this too of where things
- 9:46Speaker 1: should go and the the part that feeds into it.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And I'm not saying there's a right or wrong wrong
- 9:54Speaker 1: way to do this. And this is where I'm gonna
- 9:57Speaker 1: transition into Matt rule hand and setting the expectations a
- 10:04Speaker 1: little bit. How many awesome things did we hear this
- 10:10Speaker 1: off season about a running back depth and our defensive
- 10:17Speaker 1: line being fine? And you know it's not. It's not
- 10:21Speaker 1: gonna be a big drop off replacing and I said
- 10:24Speaker 1: it too, like I thought our defensive line would be
- 10:28Speaker 1: pretty decent. You know, I think all of those things,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and you know, it starts coming from the coach and
- 10:34Speaker 1: the players. There was no negative talk, and it's this
- 10:40Speaker 1: is the year. This is year three, Matt rule. This
- 10:42Speaker 1: is gonna be all pretty and awesome.
- 10:49Speaker 3: I will say, to the defense of Matt Ruhle and
- 10:53Speaker 3: the internal hype produced you're not gonna come out and
- 10:57Speaker 3: be like a running back depth sucks. Okay, so you're
- 11:02Speaker 3: can't do that.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But it's been so positive, right and so so I agree,
- 11:06Speaker 1: so that this is this is what's interesting. So you're
- 11:11Speaker 1: not you're not gonna obviously come out and shun players.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Not At probably this point, Warrior, the.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Transfer portal is still there's still you know, like there's
- 11:20Speaker 3: still time for people to leave.
- 11:22Speaker 2: So it's like, I got you have to fluff a
- 11:23Speaker 2: couple fluff a couple.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Of feathers, you know, just to make sure people feel
- 11:28Speaker 3: good about themselves. And they're not going to hop in
- 11:29Speaker 3: the transfer portal even though it's like, well, you're a
- 11:31Speaker 3: third string running back and you're not that good yet,
- 11:34Speaker 3: Like we'll get you there, but but you can't jump
- 11:37Speaker 3: ship to go to Acorn and start for Acron yet correct.
- 11:41Speaker 1: So here's where I also think you have varying levels
- 11:47Speaker 1: of fans and media. The media kind of has mentioned
- 11:51Speaker 1: a lot of the problems that we saw in that
- 11:54Speaker 1: first game that that we weren't allowed to run away
- 11:59Speaker 1: with it. The casual fan that maybe doesn't follow along
- 12:05Speaker 1: to a lot of stuff, and it's just hearing general
- 12:09Speaker 1: comments of really year three, uh explosive in the second year,
- 12:16Speaker 1: like they're gonna look at this game and go, what
- 12:19Speaker 1: was that? But a lot of the stuff that we
- 12:22Speaker 1: saw was a little bit concerning. The one piece that
- 12:25Speaker 1: was maybe surprising to people was the non explosive, non
- 12:30Speaker 1: down the field aggressive offense that was maybe expected that
- 12:36Speaker 1: maybe was a surprise. But overall, your your casual fans
- 12:41Speaker 1: are the ones that we're talking about, and then you're
- 12:42Speaker 1: you're more informed fans too maybe look at this game
- 12:46Speaker 1: and see a little bit different side of it. But
- 12:48Speaker 1: even even them, there's question marks on what we saw.
- 12:52Speaker 1: But I think all of that is what was formed
- 12:55Speaker 1: from the offseason, which I'm saying this like it's a
- 12:58Speaker 1: new thing for Nebraska fans, it's not.
- 13:00Speaker 3: It's it was the national media also got a sniff
- 13:04Speaker 3: like the Matt Rule Year three sneaky pick for the
- 13:08Speaker 3: playoffs that became a very popular thing as Week one
- 13:12Speaker 3: the week zero approaches, Like you look at Nebraska's schedule,
- 13:15Speaker 3: you know they're and I just saw a thing that
- 13:18Speaker 3: you know, we had.
- 13:19Speaker 2: It was I don't remember if it was ESPN came out,
- 13:22Speaker 2: but we seven point eight percent chance to make the playoffs.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Like it's.
- 13:29Speaker 3: There.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Everyone other people outside of Nebraska were also, So that's
- 13:32Speaker 2: when you kind of sort of be like, oh, well,
- 13:34Speaker 2: maybe it's not just Nebraska hype. Maybe it's not just
- 13:36Speaker 2: the offseason kool aid. Maybe there's something to it. But
- 13:41Speaker 2: I think they also weren't.
- 13:42Speaker 1: But those national people, I also don't think are going
- 13:46Speaker 1: to look at this and go change your expectation because
- 13:49Speaker 1: of this one game.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I agree.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I mean, you know, Nebraska fans' minds change, but those
- 13:55Speaker 1: national people, they don't. They don't. They didn't watch. Some
- 13:59Speaker 1: of them do maybe watch play by play, but they're.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Looking at a lot of them probably watched the highlights.
- 14:04Speaker 3: They looked at the box and were like, wow, Dylan
- 14:06Speaker 3: Royola had seventy five plus percent past completion and they
- 14:10Speaker 3: dominated time of possession and they gave up seventeen points,
- 14:13Speaker 3: but they held them to you know, three points in
- 14:15Speaker 3: the first half, and.
- 14:18Speaker 1: You know, and they found a way to win. In
- 14:20Speaker 1: the rand scheme of things, they're still in line with
- 14:22Speaker 1: whatever prediction that the neutral sight.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree well, and and you know, we also
- 14:31Speaker 3: talked we'll probably get to the Dana Holgers and stuff,
- 14:35Speaker 3: but Dana Holgerson and his press conference talked about it
- 14:37Speaker 3: like I expected us to be more explosive, have bigger plays.
- 14:41Speaker 3: And Dylan Roola had to come out and say, like,
- 14:44Speaker 3: you know, I was just doing with the offense, but
- 14:46Speaker 3: the defense.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Has given us and that's what they were giving us.
- 14:49Speaker 5: So that's going to say right there, since that's what
- 14:51Speaker 5: since NAT's given you, you weren't.
- 14:53Speaker 4: They were not laying Nebraska deep at all.
- 14:58Speaker 3: We were moving them all. Well, we just didn't execute
- 15:01Speaker 3: in the red zone. But we moved the ball well.
- 15:03Speaker 3: But by the time we got to the red zone,
- 15:04Speaker 3: we just didn't.
- 15:07Speaker 2: We just didn't.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Yeah, same same dumb penalties are killing in the red zone.
- 15:13Speaker 5: That's probably people matter about too, and not finishing drives.
- 15:18Speaker 5: It's the it's the d line, and the line got
- 15:22Speaker 5: better towards the end of the game. That D line
- 15:24Speaker 5: and O line. I think people are most worried about,
- 15:26Speaker 5: especially the D line.
- 15:29Speaker 1: The line I'm not I'm I'm not concerned. I think
- 15:33Speaker 1: that left tackle spot, you know, figuring out who's in
- 15:38Speaker 1: there for a big game.
- 15:40Speaker 4: But see the field the game.
- 15:43Speaker 1: So funny. What's funny though, Dak he actually graded the
- 15:48Speaker 1: best out of those three defensive or left tackles.
- 15:52Speaker 2: He had the worst time penalty.
- 15:54Speaker 1: He did have the worst time, but he's he's still
- 15:58Speaker 1: listed as an oar on the depth chart with the
- 15:59Speaker 1: other two like they're still going to figure that out.
- 16:04Speaker 1: So that that that the obviously the offensive line.
- 16:06Speaker 4: But so.
- 16:09Speaker 1: The comment of the Cincinnati the way they played us,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and I thought about this a little more, and this
- 16:16Speaker 1: is let's just just go, let's take a big step
- 16:18Speaker 1: back and go any sport. It doesn't have to be
- 16:23Speaker 1: a sport, but sports are easier to think about it
- 16:25Speaker 1: this way. You have a designed system, a designed an
- 16:31Speaker 1: idea of what you want to do for an offense.
- 16:37Speaker 1: And we're going to go the extreme of the Scott
- 16:40Speaker 1: Frost comment they last week, Big ten, the Big ten
- 16:47Speaker 1: is going to adjust to us because of what we're
- 16:49Speaker 1: gonna do.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Okay.
- 16:51Speaker 1: So there's there's the extreme and obviously we sit somewhere
- 16:54Speaker 1: in the middle, and then there's there's a flip flop
- 16:57Speaker 1: of literally running everything based off of what the other
- 17:02Speaker 1: team gives you. I think the frustration in the explosive
- 17:07Speaker 1: offense and is why are we just sitting in a
- 17:12Speaker 1: Cincinnati's hand? Why why can't we go make a play
- 17:15Speaker 1: even though they're in this three to two shell giving
- 17:18Speaker 1: it stuff underneath? Why can't we still have an explosive
- 17:21Speaker 1: play that they have to adjust to us? And if
- 17:25Speaker 1: they're in this three to two shell and not putting
- 17:29Speaker 1: guys in the box, why can't we have a run
- 17:31Speaker 1: play that breaks off for sixty five yards because that's
- 17:34Speaker 1: what we do, and now they got to bring extra
- 17:37Speaker 1: guys in the box to now we can make an
- 17:39Speaker 1: explosive play down the field. So there's a fine line
- 17:44Speaker 1: of saying, okay, well, that's all they're given us. It's
- 17:46Speaker 1: all they are given us, that's what we had to take. Well,
- 17:49Speaker 1: why not make them adjust to us, because when they
- 17:51Speaker 1: look at us, they probably weren't going, well, that's what
- 17:54Speaker 1: they're good, you know what I mean. There's a fine
- 17:56Speaker 1: line of adjustment. So like that, I'm not call and
- 18:00Speaker 1: get an excuse because we heard Data and Rule say that.
- 18:03Speaker 1: But at the same time, that's what That's where the
- 18:06Speaker 1: frustration sets in for the Husker fans is no, like,
- 18:10Speaker 1: why don't why can't we?
- 18:12Speaker 3: Right, our offensive line is good enough to dominate the
- 18:15Speaker 3: line of scrimmage that forces their hand and the changing
- 18:17Speaker 3: their plan, but we're not there yet.
- 18:20Speaker 2: That's why No, you.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Know and that and that, and that's why that again,
- 18:25Speaker 1: we're not scott for us as it before we even
- 18:27Speaker 1: play a game, they're gonna just us well. As a coach,
- 18:33Speaker 1: that's the imperfect world, right, the perfect world is a
- 18:35Speaker 1: coach you can go out and run anything you want
- 18:38Speaker 1: and you don't give it. Now, you're obviously going to
- 18:40Speaker 1: prepare and still scout and tweak things based on what
- 18:43Speaker 1: the other team's running, but you're gonna run your stuff
- 18:48Speaker 1: because you can, and you have the better players, you
- 18:50Speaker 1: have the better talents, and they have to find a
- 18:53Speaker 1: way to stop you both ends of the ball versus
- 18:58Speaker 1: trying to tweak and figure out how to go score.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Yes, it's important to remember that when Rule's first year
- 19:05Speaker 3: he came in, He's like Okay, I have to fix
- 19:08Speaker 3: the I have to fix the offensive line, Like that's
- 19:10Speaker 3: why I have to fix Last year the offensive line
- 19:12Speaker 3: was decent. And then he's like, we have to fix
- 19:15Speaker 3: special teams. We have to fix the turnover issue. And
- 19:19Speaker 3: you know, this year we come out no turnovers. I
- 19:22Speaker 3: guess last year we kind of fixed it halfway through
- 19:24Speaker 3: and he's like, all right, we have to make our
- 19:26Speaker 3: offense a little bit better and we have to fix
- 19:29Speaker 3: special teams.
- 19:30Speaker 2: That's the number one. This year.
- 19:32Speaker 3: We come out Game one, we hit a fifty two
- 19:34Speaker 3: yard field goal, we go two for two, punting team
- 19:36Speaker 3: look good. So it's like, okay, you can see the progress.
- 19:40Speaker 3: You said to remember where we started at. I mean
- 19:42Speaker 3: it was there was a lot to fix. So Week
- 19:46Speaker 3: one I agree and reset my expectations. I mean, I
- 19:53Speaker 3: don't know about you guys, but I was like, it'll
- 19:55Speaker 3: be a good year for go eight and four. I mean,
- 19:58Speaker 3: going into the year, we kind of had what we expected,
- 20:00Speaker 3: but my my ceilings definitely dropped.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Well, when you expect you're gonna lose, I mine. Mine
- 20:10Speaker 1: hasn't changed. I'll be honest, like, I'm we're gonna be
- 20:14Speaker 1: in a lot of close games. Guys a lot of
- 20:16Speaker 1: close games. The only reason why it may have changed
- 20:17Speaker 1: and actually may have gotten up a little bit is
- 20:20Speaker 1: because I think U. C. L A And Northwestern might
- 20:22Speaker 1: be complete dog shit.
- 20:24Speaker 2: But that's true.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Things have not changed for me, just as far as
- 20:30Speaker 1: did I think maybe our offense was gonna be more explosive. Yeah,
- 20:34Speaker 1: but they still can be. They still can't, still can be,
- 20:37Speaker 1: that's the thing. Yeah.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Yeah, Like you said, change change your game plan, So
- 20:44Speaker 5: say everything runs a shell against Nebraska? Are they just
- 20:46Speaker 5: gonna not throw deep at all? Like the whole year?
- 20:52Speaker 5: It's you have to change your game plan. And and
- 20:54Speaker 5: there's on the other side of the ball. And I
- 20:57Speaker 5: don't I still don't get it. Why would thing that
- 21:00Speaker 5: throw a spot a spy on sores.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Beat the whole game?
- 21:05Speaker 5: That's all he could do was just run and they
- 21:08Speaker 5: refuse to throw on him. Change their game plan defense,
- 21:11Speaker 5: And I I just that's one part of the game
- 21:12Speaker 5: I did not get.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm like it came late, right, Some of the
- 21:22Speaker 1: stuff was designed for runs. I also think when you
- 21:25Speaker 1: have a lead like that, you're you're not obviously wanting
- 21:29Speaker 1: to give up a twelve yard run to a quarterback.
- 21:31Speaker 2: But you go to give the six year past to quarterback.
- 21:35Speaker 1: And you like you like clock ticking. But I agree,
- 21:37Speaker 1: I think. I mean, I I was pretty pleased with
- 21:40Speaker 1: the defense overall, the defensive line.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I thought, it's made you nervous.
- 21:49Speaker 1: But I yeah, I I sores bes. I mean coming
- 21:54Speaker 1: into the game and going out of the game like
- 21:57Speaker 1: he's a lot worse than what people thought he was
- 21:59Speaker 1: going to be. I thought overall, I mean, like Lakes included, right,
- 22:03Speaker 1: he was supposed to be. I think a lot better
- 22:06Speaker 1: than that too. So I don't know, I mean the
- 22:10Speaker 1: spy thing maybe.
- 22:13Speaker 5: But here's here's the other tough part about Week one
- 22:17Speaker 5: is these teams all have nine months to repair for
- 22:21Speaker 5: Like Cincinnati had nine months to prepare for Nebraska, so
- 22:25Speaker 5: they they deep dive into everything and you're almost overpaired
- 22:30Speaker 5: to play that team.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Instead of just one week.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Yeah, now we're in the one week prepper two weeks
- 22:38Speaker 1: if you have a bye week. So yeah, I mean
- 22:40Speaker 1: that's that's a good point. I think that factors into it,
- 22:45Speaker 1: and not just rest Cincinnati, but all games this weekend.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I want to circle all the way back to where
- 22:53Speaker 1: we started. We've been kind of going on tangency, which
- 22:56Speaker 1: is okay. So all of this expert all this expectation
- 23:01Speaker 1: hypet where we landed Week one general fans comments that
- 23:05Speaker 1: we all mentioned at the top. I want to talk
- 23:10Speaker 1: specifically about Matt Rule in this job as the head
- 23:17Speaker 1: coach at Nebraska, and I'm going to go in a
- 23:21Speaker 1: little rant here, so bear with me. Here's where Matt
- 23:26Speaker 1: Ruhle's job is. And we just mentioned before the show
- 23:29Speaker 1: Austin how Akron their head coach is zero C and
- 23:37Speaker 1: calling plays. A lot of head coaches not a lot.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Some call either the offense or the defense. Matt Rule,
- 23:45Speaker 1: his job as the head coach Nebraska is a CEO
- 23:51Speaker 1: and he is managing all the moving parts everything and
- 23:58Speaker 1: obviously when it comes to game management and in game stuff,
- 24:03Speaker 1: but more importantly handling all of the external stuff that's
- 24:08Speaker 1: going on in college football.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It's his job to do that. It's not really it
- 24:16Speaker 1: is his job because he's a head coach and CEO,
- 24:18Speaker 1: but it's not his job. It's to critique and really
- 24:24Speaker 1: get down to specifics of the offense and defense. That's
- 24:30Speaker 1: the coordinator's job. And while we did hear from them
- 24:36Speaker 1: in the offseason, but only a few times, and we
- 24:39Speaker 1: heard some good things, which again I think you probably
- 24:42Speaker 1: are going to say good things, but this week those
- 24:45Speaker 1: two gave some hesitation the things that we saw and
- 24:52Speaker 1: were not necessarily happy with how the game went, and
- 24:55Speaker 1: called some people out and some positions out for that rule.
- 25:00Speaker 1: His job is to manage everything at one time and
- 25:06Speaker 1: in a very new world. He's trying to do the
- 25:11Speaker 1: best he can now as a head coach, I think, well,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and maybe not all head coaches, but especially at a
- 25:19Speaker 1: head coach at Nebraska, to put a little chart on this,
- 25:23Speaker 1: it's either gonna work or it's gonna not work. Right,
- 25:28Speaker 1: not in Nebraska. Are you just gonna sit in the
- 25:30Speaker 1: middle for your whole life and go, eh, No, it's
- 25:34Speaker 1: your You're either gonna have success here and success defying Nebraska,
- 25:38Speaker 1: is gonna be competing for a college football playoff berth
- 25:40Speaker 1: every year, or is not gonna work. You're not gonna
- 25:45Speaker 1: get to that point and you're gonna get fired. So
- 25:52Speaker 1: rules doing in his mind what he thinks to get
- 25:56Speaker 1: it to work. And some of that stuff is what
- 26:03Speaker 1: we're seeing with all the hype, the expectations, the extracurricular
- 26:09Speaker 1: stuff that he's doing that in the past, this podcast
- 26:14Speaker 1: included you would go, man, just win first, just get
- 26:19Speaker 1: that stuff done, and you know what it might result in,
- 26:22Speaker 1: the wins. But if you don't win, you look like
- 26:24Speaker 1: an idiot, right, you look like a dummy for doing
- 26:28Speaker 1: all this extra stuff. And the stuff I'm mentioning recently
- 26:32Speaker 1: going on the Pat mcaf a show every week, starting
- 26:35Speaker 1: a podcast and doing his own podcast, the picture with
- 26:39Speaker 1: the Bowl in the off season, the stuff that fits
- 26:44Speaker 1: into what it's called an attention economy, which I also
- 26:47Speaker 1: stole that from the podcast, But it's an attention economy
- 26:51Speaker 1: right now. Like rule, I think understands that you want
- 26:55Speaker 1: attention drawing to your program right now, and that's why
- 26:59Speaker 1: a lot of things are For it to work, we
- 27:02Speaker 1: need to get really good talent and players here, not
- 27:06Speaker 1: just in one year, but in two years, three years,
- 27:08Speaker 1: four years. So he's seeing it as a CEO from
- 27:11Speaker 1: this big, big perspective. Now, if it doesn't work and
- 27:14Speaker 1: you're not able to execute and have the right pieces
- 27:16Speaker 1: underneath you to win games, then now you look like
- 27:20Speaker 1: a fool. And I'll defense Scott Frost a little bit here.
- 27:25Speaker 1: There's a little bit of that in Scott Frost. I
- 27:26Speaker 1: think too, and he did end up looking like a
- 27:29Speaker 1: fool because it didn't work. So that being said, I
- 27:35Speaker 1: think that's what Rule's doing, and I think he's very
- 27:37Speaker 1: aware of that that he's doing it that way. I
- 27:40Speaker 1: think he in his mind it's either going to work
- 27:42Speaker 1: this year, next year or it's not. And if it
- 27:46Speaker 1: does work, and it does click with our coordinators, with
- 27:49Speaker 1: the players that we have, then this thing is going
- 27:51Speaker 1: to get rolling. If it doesn't work, he's like, all right,
- 27:54Speaker 1: well it's not gonna work here, and it was gonna
- 27:56Speaker 1: end somehow. And is there a little bit of extra
- 27:59Speaker 1: blame on laughing stock at me for doing all this
- 28:02Speaker 1: extra crap? Who cares? Like I do? I do think?
- 28:06Speaker 1: I think? I do think it's pretty black and white
- 28:08Speaker 1: as that. As a head coach at Nebraska, it's either
- 28:10Speaker 1: gonna work or or not. You're not we saw the
- 28:12Speaker 1: bull pointing, You're not gonna sit in the middle. People
- 28:14Speaker 1: are going to get stale of it. And that's at Nebraska. Now,
- 28:17Speaker 1: you want to coach at Marshall for eighteen years, go
- 28:19Speaker 1: coach at Marshall for for eighteen years.
- 28:22Speaker 3: But anyway, that was my definitely, I definitely yes, And
- 28:27Speaker 3: Matt rule. He's been pretty upfront. He's like, I'm doing
- 28:29Speaker 3: pet McBee because we need eyes on Nebraska and we
- 28:34Speaker 3: have not been a winning program and attention you being
- 28:38Speaker 3: out there is important, and he I mean, he he's
- 28:41Speaker 3: he's up front. He's like, I'm doing the podcast for nil.
- 28:44Speaker 3: I knew pet McBee for recruiting. I did the Bold
- 28:48Speaker 3: Picture for recruiting. Like, I mean, he's straightforward with it,
- 28:53Speaker 3: and I appreciate that, and I agree, you know, he's
- 28:57Speaker 3: definitely left it up. He's like, all right, my coordinators
- 29:00Speaker 3: are I'm hiring top I'm gonna spend money on what
- 29:03Speaker 3: I believe to be top notch coordinators and they're gonna
- 29:07Speaker 3: they're gonna solve the problems. Like he's like, I'm not
- 29:09Speaker 3: gonna special teams sucks, so I'm gonna go get my deckler.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Like I'm just I'm gonna go do that because I
- 29:14Speaker 3: don't have time to fix special teams.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I have to deal with and I can't. I bet
- 29:19Speaker 2: nil Is it's just atrocious to deal with.
- 29:22Speaker 3: I can I cannot imagine trying to juggle one hundred
- 29:26Speaker 3: college kids and paying them and he's.
- 29:28Speaker 1: In charge of all of it, including still the head
- 29:31Speaker 1: coaches job on a game day.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Yep.
- 29:35Speaker 2: I you know, we were, we were.
- 29:39Speaker 3: We were critical of him at the beginning of you know,
- 29:41Speaker 3: like your peacock in a little bit before you're you know,
- 29:43Speaker 3: putting the curt for the horse. But the more I
- 29:47Speaker 3: see of just what's going on with Nil and stuff,
- 29:49Speaker 3: is like, Okay, you have to do this stuff.
- 29:52Speaker 2: You just have to.
- 29:54Speaker 3: So, And I think you're right. I think he knows that.
- 29:57Speaker 3: And he's like, if I go out in Nebraska, I'm
- 30:00Speaker 3: to go out trying to do everything I can to
- 30:01Speaker 3: make these things work.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I mean, you have to do this stuff. But I
- 30:07Speaker 1: guess my point is he's doing it to an extreme,
- 30:10Speaker 1: like not every coach is going on the Pat McAfee show.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Not you know, he's he's going to the extreme level
- 30:15Speaker 1: of it, which, again, do you have to do that?
- 30:20Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I think that's just his approach.
- 30:22Speaker 1: No, no, but yeah, yeah, that's his that's his active
- 30:25Speaker 1: approach of what he's trying to do and focus on
- 30:28Speaker 1: as the head coach at Nebraska, where you do have
- 30:33Speaker 1: a lot and we're not the only place that has this,
- 30:35Speaker 1: but you have a lot of extra eyes and I
- 30:38Speaker 1: mean all these podcasts that are out there on Nebraska
- 30:42Speaker 1: and the different media outlets that cover like you have
- 30:45Speaker 1: a lot of stuff on you, and this is his.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Active bak of doing it.
- 30:49Speaker 3: To his credit, we might have not time to that
- 30:52Speaker 3: point where we're winning all these big star recruits, but
- 30:54Speaker 3: like we're making like the top five for a lot
- 30:56Speaker 3: of you know, five star recruits, which we weren't before.
- 31:00Speaker 2: So I mean, and.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Again, it's gonna work or it's not. Like I have
- 31:05Speaker 1: that quote written down that I came to my mind,
- 31:07Speaker 1: it's either going to this way is either going to
- 31:10Speaker 1: really pay off or it's going to be a laughing
- 31:15Speaker 1: stock and you're gonna get cause it is. Everybody's expectations
- 31:18Speaker 1: are going to be so high doing this too, right,
- 31:20Speaker 1: if you're all you're doing is talking and preaching out,
- 31:24Speaker 1: a lot of this stuff works you you don't sound
- 31:26Speaker 1: like a no at all, but you're kind of educating
- 31:29Speaker 1: everybody to where this is how you want them to think,
- 31:32Speaker 1: and you're hyping everything up. You're adding expectations, so you're
- 31:35Speaker 1: getting just like the Cincinnati game when people were going
- 31:39Speaker 1: to that game, we're gonna win thirty eight seventeen, Like
- 31:44Speaker 1: eventually people are gonna get pissed that it's not exploding.
- 31:48Speaker 1: If it doesn't explode, So you're not gonna sit in
- 31:50Speaker 1: the middle with this approach. It's either gonna pay off
- 31:55Speaker 1: or if people are gonna go This guy's a blow
- 31:58Speaker 1: hard and all he does is talk and know how
- 32:00Speaker 1: to actually produce, whether what you know, whatever the record
- 32:04Speaker 1: is it we could be we could be eight and
- 32:06Speaker 1: four and people could have that thought. But but it's
- 32:11Speaker 1: either gonna work or it's not gonna work. That that's
- 32:13Speaker 1: my point here. And this is, like you said, this
- 32:16Speaker 1: is a rules approach. This is what he's doing. To
- 32:18Speaker 1: take it that way. Some people would maybe really agree
- 32:22Speaker 1: with it. Some people are gonna be very very against it.
- 32:25Speaker 5: I I get it's a new era and you got
- 32:27Speaker 5: to put your name out there. But all this McAfee
- 32:31Speaker 5: stuff and podcast crap, which I'm saying is as we're
- 32:33Speaker 5: doing a podcast, but I don't I don't like that stuff.
- 32:39Speaker 5: Go out there and win first. Like like you said
- 32:42Speaker 5: to say, he's you're five and four and he's still
- 32:44Speaker 5: in his McFee show.
- 32:46Speaker 4: No one's gonna care what he says. He's gonna like
- 32:49Speaker 4: an idiot.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Like but but that do you agree that this is
- 32:53Speaker 1: in the modern world of this attention economy that I
- 32:56Speaker 1: talked about earlier, of nil recruiting. Do you think this
- 33:01Speaker 1: is one way of attacking it?
- 33:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I see why he's doing it.
- 33:05Speaker 1: So what what I what I'm saying is I I'm
- 33:07Speaker 1: with you, Deck, that's the original way of thinking, even
- 33:10Speaker 1: for myself, for a lot of people go out and
- 33:11Speaker 1: win first. But could this, I'm gonna say on the forefront,
- 33:17Speaker 1: on the breaking edge, like, could this be the way
- 33:20Speaker 1: to actually taking the brasketball program and excel it forward?
- 33:26Speaker 1: I don't know about it or or are you just
- 33:29Speaker 1: saying nope, this is this way is not going to work.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I think it could.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And that's what And that's what I think he's trying
- 33:39Speaker 1: to do. I think he's taking a shot like this,
- 33:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna do this, and it's either gonna work or
- 33:44Speaker 1: it's not. I'm what I'm he's saying to himself, I'm
- 33:47Speaker 1: not gonna be here probably if if if we're not
- 33:50Speaker 1: if this thing doesn't explode and we're not winning nine
- 33:52Speaker 1: games in year four or five, I'm not gonna be
- 33:55Speaker 1: here anyways. Because the program is not the fans of program,
- 34:01Speaker 1: the boosters, the the board of regions that they're not
- 34:04Speaker 1: gonna want me here if I'm still winning six or
- 34:06Speaker 1: seven games in year four or five. So I'm gonna
- 34:08Speaker 1: do what I can now to make sure and you're
- 34:10Speaker 1: four or five that this thing's exploding, and if it doesn't,
- 34:15Speaker 1: regardless of whether we're winning now or not, he's he's
- 34:18Speaker 1: thinking as a CEO of his business, this is where
- 34:23Speaker 1: he wants to go. So that that's my point is
- 34:25Speaker 1: I agree that there is your way of thinking is
- 34:27Speaker 1: win first. Well shit if you if you don't do
- 34:31Speaker 1: all this stuff and you do beat Cincinnati's twenty seventeen
- 34:33Speaker 1: and you end up seven, I mean, it's a very
- 34:36Speaker 1: You're not gonna get recruits for your four or five.
- 34:42Speaker 5: There's no in between what he's doing. It's either it's
- 34:45Speaker 5: either gonna work really well or just be an absolute
- 34:48Speaker 5: shit show.
- 34:48Speaker 4: There's no in between.
- 34:51Speaker 5: He's putting all chips on table, which which I argue
- 34:54Speaker 5: what you're saying about that he's he knows he doesn't
- 34:59Speaker 5: have much time left.
- 35:01Speaker 4: To figure this out.
- 35:03Speaker 5: And I guess, I guess your threes just time to
- 35:07Speaker 5: throw it all out there.
- 35:10Speaker 1: And and this is Matt Rules quote unquote year right,
- 35:13Speaker 1: that it's supposed to happen.
- 35:15Speaker 3: This is the year he has most of the positive
- 35:16Speaker 3: hide behind him. If this year, if this, if this
- 35:19Speaker 3: year falls apart. It also becomes a narrative that Matt
- 35:23Speaker 3: Roule Nebraska can't be fixed. You know it's done, Matt rule,
- 35:30Speaker 3: the year's three magic didn't work.
- 35:33Speaker 1: This also ties into a good thing that I heard
- 35:38Speaker 1: Jackson Weeks, who's been on the show before. I'm also
- 35:42Speaker 1: getting married here and not even not even two days
- 35:46Speaker 1: one day tomorrow, rehearsal dinner tonight and uh wedding tomorrow
- 35:51Speaker 1: to con Grass there Jackson, but he he texted me this,
- 35:55Speaker 1: it's been a few weeks ago. Can the blue collar approach,
- 35:59Speaker 1: the blue collar way have success or win anymore? And
- 36:04Speaker 1: I know what he means by blue collar, but it
- 36:07Speaker 1: that the more traditional old school like Belichick. Yep, you're yep,
- 36:13Speaker 1: let's Bill Belichick with what happened against DCU. But but
- 36:17Speaker 1: the the hard nose keep your mouth shut. And I'm
- 36:21Speaker 1: not gonna say rule as a soft coach, but that
- 36:24Speaker 1: that not not doing any of the media stuff, just
- 36:30Speaker 1: working your your butt off, you know, basically selling that
- 36:33Speaker 1: to your players too, that you know we're gonna do
- 36:36Speaker 1: things behind closed doors and we're gonna work our buttop
- 36:39Speaker 1: no one else is gonna know what we're doing, but
- 36:40Speaker 1: it's gonna show. They're out in the field and in
- 36:43Speaker 1: that kind of mindset and approach, shut up and win.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Can that work anymore?
- 36:52Speaker 3: I think that their their blue collar approach will still
- 36:55Speaker 3: exist where it's hey, we're gonna I mean, that's kind
- 36:57Speaker 3: of that rules approaches. We're gonna recruit talent, we're going
- 37:00Speaker 3: to develop talent, we're going to work hard, and it's
- 37:02Speaker 3: going to show up on the field, but we're just
- 37:05Speaker 3: going to talk about it too.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's it's a revised I call it a
- 37:10Speaker 1: revised approach. I mean it's it's so the answer to
- 37:13Speaker 1: the traditional blue collar No. I think that's why Nick
- 37:18Speaker 1: Saban was getting old. But I think that's why some
- 37:19Speaker 1: of these old timer type of coaches are saying, oh
- 37:23Speaker 1: my gosh, there's so many other moving parts now that
- 37:26Speaker 1: it's the world's just changed. It's different now. And yeah,
- 37:31Speaker 1: if you want to be the old school, an old
- 37:33Speaker 1: timer and think that that way still works, well, to
- 37:36Speaker 1: go find me a coach that's really having success right now. Now.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Do I think it could maybe turn back to that
- 37:42Speaker 1: and have a little cycle in about ten years where
- 37:46Speaker 1: someone comes in and strips everything down and goes back
- 37:49Speaker 1: to that because it's not normal, and you find the
- 37:52Speaker 1: right kids and you maybe get some success out of it, maybe,
- 37:55Speaker 1: but it's going to be a lot harder to compete
- 37:57Speaker 1: with the teams that are the blue bloods and getting
- 38:01Speaker 1: all of the money and all of the recruits. So
- 38:06Speaker 1: it is it's a good question to think about. It's
- 38:08Speaker 1: just a changed world. What I think the concern right
- 38:12Speaker 1: with anybody that's talking a lot in rules done that
- 38:16Speaker 1: since he's been alive, is don't become an arrogant, know
- 38:23Speaker 1: at all, to where it's a false front or you
- 38:30Speaker 1: know you're you're not you know, you're no longer preaching
- 38:32Speaker 1: what you're actually believing in and and seeing on the
- 38:36Speaker 1: field and coaching and and you know what, that might
- 38:38Speaker 1: naturally happen if you're not winning games, But then you
- 38:41Speaker 1: start to become a fraud. Scott Frost, I mean, it's
- 38:46Speaker 1: you saw it happen there. So I think that's where
- 38:49Speaker 1: the fine line is. And you're right, Austin, right now,
- 38:51Speaker 1: it's we're gonna work our butts up and we're going
- 38:53Speaker 1: to tell people about it. That's that where it's at
- 38:56Speaker 1: is fine as long as we take that next step
- 38:59Speaker 1: and become Okay, well, whatever we're saying and we're hearing
- 39:04Speaker 1: is not matching what's happening on the field.
- 39:08Speaker 5: I'm not saying. I'm not saying go full that between
- 39:11Speaker 5: the screw they and I yell. I'm not gonna do
- 39:13Speaker 5: that or change my style at all. But I the
- 39:20Speaker 5: way he's doing it is kind of rubbing me the
- 39:22Speaker 5: wrong way a little bit. With with all this MACTV shown,
- 39:27Speaker 5: podcasting all this, it's he's putting himself out there a
- 39:30Speaker 5: little bit too much.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I think, you know what, that's us, as you know,
- 39:38Speaker 1: in our twenties doing a podcast that you know, there's
- 39:44Speaker 1: some older fans who's who's he doing that stuff for?
- 39:48Speaker 4: Though eighteen year olds?
- 39:50Speaker 1: It's not us. Yeah, and and so if the message
- 39:54Speaker 1: is getting across to it, I guess it's a little
- 39:57Speaker 1: bit for us because you do have to manage all
- 39:59Speaker 1: of that. But he's doing it. He's teaching the world
- 40:03Speaker 1: about NIL and explaining his view and opinion on it.
- 40:08Speaker 1: So it is kind of for us a little bit.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Is it going to rub us the wrong way? If
- 40:13Speaker 1: you don't get wins. Yeah, But as far as selling
- 40:17Speaker 1: to the kids that you need to come to recruit
- 40:18Speaker 1: to get to become the next level of program you
- 40:22Speaker 1: want to be, that's who he's trying to talk to.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Now.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Naturally you're going to get others to go with it.
- 40:28Speaker 4: But okay, man.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Yep, I didn't want to talk about Acron because I
- 40:35Speaker 1: don't know what there's talk about but Acron this week
- 40:40Speaker 1: thirty four and a half point favorite night game, Memorial Stadium.
- 40:47Speaker 1: I mentioned before Akron did not put up anything big
- 40:51Speaker 1: old goose egg on the scoreboard at home against Wyoming.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Here's how I want to preview Akron today, similar to
- 40:58Speaker 1: what we did Cincinnati. What do you want to see? In?
- 41:05Speaker 1: What are you going to see? And those two things
- 41:09Speaker 1: can be the same, those two things can be different.
- 41:13Speaker 1: You can obviously make some predictions here with the going
- 41:16Speaker 1: to see, but it's a game that we shouldn't most
- 41:20Speaker 1: likely will win. There's a lot of talk and not
- 41:25Speaker 1: gonna say negativity, but some things that we need to
- 41:27Speaker 1: work on that we've mentioned a lot of people have
- 41:30Speaker 1: mentioned they're very eye opening. So, dak what do you
- 41:35Speaker 1: want to see?
- 41:38Speaker 5: I want to see the d line needs to show
- 41:43Speaker 5: up this game. If they get push rounding a factor
- 41:47Speaker 5: and it's the season is going to be, it's going
- 41:50Speaker 5: to be really bad, especially going to big templay.
- 41:53Speaker 4: I want to see that.
- 41:54Speaker 5: I also want to see all this talk about oh
- 41:56Speaker 5: we wanted to air it out Morgan Cincinnati, Well, here
- 41:59Speaker 5: you go.
- 41:59Speaker 4: You're playing at air it.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Out, like don't don't hide anything back.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Now.
- 42:06Speaker 4: I hate this is gonna happen.
- 42:08Speaker 5: They're gonna go vanilla against Akron and HBU HBCU whatever
- 42:12Speaker 5: they are because they don't want to show anything. So
- 42:16Speaker 5: it probably won't be It probably won't be a full
- 42:19Speaker 5: game plan out there. But I want to see. I
- 42:23Speaker 5: want to see him put up forty to fifty points,
- 42:26Speaker 5: try some deep shots, like try try a bunch of
- 42:30Speaker 5: crap that that might not work, but like trick plays
- 42:35Speaker 5: and stuff, just try it out, see what happens.
- 42:37Speaker 1: You want to see tricks against ac.
- 42:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean try it out might as well. These
- 42:44Speaker 5: these are just like three season games basically, mm.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Hmm yeah, okay, I guess I don't know. If I
- 42:55Speaker 3: mess it and you see a trick play against Achron,
- 42:59Speaker 3: at least we should be good enough that we don't
- 43:02Speaker 3: need the trick play to have a big play against Acrid.
- 43:06Speaker 2: That would be my counter to that.
- 43:07Speaker 1: But I guess Dak wants to experiment.
- 43:10Speaker 4: Yeah, just try it the right word, but.
- 43:12Speaker 1: I wouldn't say, you know, the trick I'm talking.
- 43:24Speaker 2: What I want to see is a shutout, because why
- 43:28Speaker 2: we shut them out, and I'd.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Feel pretty I feel I feel a lot better if
- 43:32Speaker 3: we also shut them out. I mean, if we give
- 43:34Speaker 3: up a scorer here for you know, but if they
- 43:37Speaker 3: put up two touchdowns on us, I'd feel a little
- 43:40Speaker 3: a little ill. And so I don't think we will
- 43:44Speaker 3: see a shout out, but there's a chance we could
- 43:47Speaker 3: see a shout out.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I on offense, that explosiveness, back to your point, I
- 43:58Speaker 1: want to see some version of it. Now. I don't
- 44:01Speaker 1: think it's I don't think we're gonna try to get creative,
- 44:07Speaker 1: and I do think we're gonna be very vanilla. But
- 44:11Speaker 1: by being vanilla, I want to see us have some
- 44:15Speaker 1: explosive plays from that, if that makes sense. So like
- 44:22Speaker 1: running backs making guys miss and and Dana mentioned we
- 44:28Speaker 1: had six we had six guys or six missed tackles
- 44:35Speaker 1: or made six guys miss in an entire football game.
- 44:37Speaker 1: He was pissed about it. I think you want to
- 44:43Speaker 1: see more of that against a team that you think
- 44:45Speaker 1: you should be able to make guys miss. I think receivers,
- 44:49Speaker 1: you'd like to see guys go make plays after the catch.
- 44:56Speaker 1: And whether that means thro a couple of deep balls, Yeah,
- 45:00Speaker 1: maybe there is. Maybe there is a deep post that
- 45:03Speaker 1: we can hit any one of those three guys on
- 45:06Speaker 1: against Akron that that would be nice to see. I
- 45:09Speaker 1: don't think. I don't think we're gonna see that just
- 45:13Speaker 1: because I think they're going to play conservative to accred
- 45:18Speaker 1: I mean, why why why why play aggressive? And why
- 45:21Speaker 1: why change? You know, why why try to when you're
- 45:23Speaker 1: the very, very inferior opponent.
- 45:28Speaker 4: What which which way do you guys lean in these
- 45:32Speaker 4: type of games? Do you.
- 45:34Speaker 5: Do you like when they go full vanilla and not
- 45:36Speaker 5: show anything or do you want them to show a
- 45:37Speaker 5: little bit.
- 45:38Speaker 2: I want them to practice the basics. I want them
- 45:41Speaker 2: to be good at the vanilla.
- 45:42Speaker 1: I want to get better like I want the things
- 45:46Speaker 1: that did not go well in the game before, whether
- 45:50Speaker 1: you win or loss, which to me, the best way
- 45:56Speaker 1: to win against Cincinnati was how we won and in
- 46:00Speaker 1: a big picture, I think that was the best way
- 46:02Speaker 1: to win because it showed what we needed to work on.
- 46:05Speaker 1: If we would have won thirty eight to ten, everybody
- 46:10Speaker 1: would have said this team is awesome, including the players
- 46:14Speaker 1: and probably a lot of the coaches, and now you're
- 46:17Speaker 1: while while you would still find things to work on,
- 46:20Speaker 1: it wouldn't have been like this week. I think winning
- 46:22Speaker 1: how we did for this season was the absolute number
- 46:25Speaker 1: one best way to win. Like I seriously thinking about
- 46:29Speaker 1: that way now people aren't like, maybe happy the way
- 46:32Speaker 1: we won, but the for this year. Oh yeah, best
- 46:36Speaker 1: way to win because you find a way to get
- 46:40Speaker 1: better than things. So yes, I think as far as
- 46:44Speaker 1: being explosive and showing stuff like, don't I don't think
- 46:50Speaker 1: we need to go out and show stuff that we're not.
- 46:52Speaker 1: We don't want to run against Michigan against Michigan State.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I think we want to get better at for example,
- 47:00Speaker 1: our next two running backs with Mosey and Okay Nelson,
- 47:05Speaker 1: like those guys, we want them to do some better
- 47:10Speaker 1: things than Dana said. Everybody wants them to do more.
- 47:14Speaker 1: So that's what that's what you want. You don't want
- 47:16Speaker 1: Emmett to have sixty nine out of the seventy eight snaps.
- 47:20Speaker 1: You don't want that?
- 47:22Speaker 4: Yeah, So.
- 47:24Speaker 2: I mean yeah, yep.
- 47:29Speaker 3: So I guess to frame what acronym they accro in
- 47:33Speaker 3: Wyoming game last week? Was Wyoming ran four point three
- 47:38Speaker 3: yards per carry, that one guy who had twin and
- 47:40Speaker 3: carries for one hundred and thirty two yards. And they
- 47:43Speaker 3: had one receiver with eight receptions and one hundred and
- 47:44Speaker 3: ninety yards. And that was Wyoming against them. So we
- 47:50Speaker 3: should have better receivers and better running back to the
- 47:52Speaker 3: better offensive line.
- 47:54Speaker 5: But the funny part, but I didn't get shutting out,
- 47:56Speaker 5: is they're supposting an uptemple high playing offense.
- 48:00Speaker 4: That's what acron wants to be.
- 48:03Speaker 5: Well they they sure as hell wasn't no.
- 48:08Speaker 1: No, yeah, and and and regardless of the opponent, it
- 48:15Speaker 1: is a time where if you're playing, if you're playing
- 48:17Speaker 1: a Michigan this week, your your your question going into
- 48:21Speaker 1: the week isn't okay, how's Mosey and Nelson gonna look
- 48:27Speaker 1: in the backfield? Your question is do we play them
- 48:31Speaker 1: here's Michigan or this week They're gonna play and they're
- 48:35Speaker 1: gonna get their snaps. They're gonna get time to play
- 48:37Speaker 1: because you can you're gonna be able to evaluate them
- 48:40Speaker 1: and see, Okay, where are these guys at and what
- 48:42Speaker 1: what can we do to get them ready to play Michigan.
- 48:45Speaker 1: That's the beauty of these games. Same thing with the
- 48:51Speaker 1: defensive line or in the left tackle position, those concerning things.
- 48:56Speaker 1: If you go and play Michigan this week, you're going,
- 49:00Speaker 1: oh boy, are they ready? The question is are they
- 49:03Speaker 1: ready to play Michigan? Are they physically capable to hold
- 49:05Speaker 1: their own or are we just going to get pounded
- 49:07Speaker 1: up front? Now? This week we're.
- 49:09Speaker 4: Gonna be work.
- 49:10Speaker 1: We're going to be able to do a lot of things,
- 49:12Speaker 1: maybe not everything, most things that we want to do
- 49:14Speaker 1: and have success with it. But can we break that
- 49:18Speaker 1: down into a way that we can make it useful
- 49:21Speaker 1: for the Michigan game and when it comes to player personnel, technique,
- 49:26Speaker 1: scheme to help make us better for the long run.
- 49:30Speaker 1: That's what you want out of these games.
- 49:34Speaker 3: No, but I want I want to see Heinrich Harberg
- 49:37Speaker 3: on the field getting passes.
- 49:41Speaker 4: I do. I want to see more Heinrich trick plays.
- 49:45Speaker 2: That doesn't be a trick place.
- 49:46Speaker 1: It's not a trick place, a tight end ack.
- 49:48Speaker 2: I just want to see him out there.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Uh. Another thing that I think I want to see
- 49:57Speaker 1: is just continued execution from our special teams. That kind
- 50:04Speaker 1: of speaks for itself. I don't it would be awesome
- 50:08Speaker 1: to see an archie like seventy yard bomb, like I
- 50:12Speaker 1: just want to see. Well, actually I hope I don't
- 50:14Speaker 1: see him at all.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Yeah, you don't want to see on the field.
- 50:17Speaker 1: It's accurred. But just just execute like we did last week,
- 50:21Speaker 1: and we should not have any shoot yourself in the
- 50:26Speaker 1: foot mistakes on special teams again. You never should, really,
- 50:30Speaker 1: I mean the stuff that we have seen the past
- 50:32Speaker 1: several years. So just execute again. It's another game to
- 50:37Speaker 1: do that. And to be honest, a lot of the
- 50:39Speaker 1: stuff with special teams, like is it really that much
- 50:42Speaker 1: different kicking a forty five yard field goal against Acron
- 50:45Speaker 1: or just kicking a forty five gyard field goal against
- 50:47Speaker 1: Cincinnati fors Michigan. Not really, They're very, very similar. So
- 50:52Speaker 1: just continue to execute and not beat yourselves in the foot.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Maybe get some returns going, you know, maybe there's an
- 50:58Speaker 1: opportunity there that bene but just do your job and
- 51:03Speaker 1: continue to build off of that. I heard this too.
- 51:07Speaker 1: When was the last time we had back to back
- 51:08Speaker 1: special teams games where we went our special teams looks okay,
- 51:11Speaker 1: we haven't had a back to back special teams performance
- 51:14Speaker 1: in years twenty years.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, special teams would be good to see.
- 51:24Speaker 3: I want to see our defense will bottle up the
- 51:27Speaker 3: run game a little better than they did last week.
- 51:29Speaker 3: I mean, obviously the running quarterback was a different you know,
- 51:33Speaker 3: a weird fault that you don't always have to prepare for, but.
- 51:38Speaker 2: It'd be It makes me feel better about our defensive
- 51:41Speaker 2: line if we like not.
- 51:44Speaker 3: I don't mean I still look exactly like last year,
- 51:46Speaker 3: but if there's some resemblance of like, Okay, we didn't totally
- 51:49Speaker 3: forget what we did last year where we bottled everyone up.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And Ben Finlay's our quarterback, He's not a runner. He
- 51:55Speaker 1: went sixteen for thirty eight for one hundred and thirty
- 51:57Speaker 1: nine yards and a pick last week.
- 52:01Speaker 2: A lot better beans.
- 52:03Speaker 5: Yeah, So here's a here's another question. I was thinking,
- 52:09Speaker 5: what what combined score that you win by these next
- 52:13Speaker 5: two games?
- 52:13Speaker 4: Would you guys be worried or pissed about like that?
- 52:18Speaker 3: It?
- 52:20Speaker 1: I really I don't. I don't even know I if
- 52:25Speaker 1: even if we won, I guess if we won lesson.
- 52:29Speaker 2: If we don't want to buy two stories.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, Like if we win thirty to six, I'm
- 52:37Speaker 1: okay with that. Like I some people might get pissed
- 52:39Speaker 1: that we're not blowing them out, like that we're not
- 52:42Speaker 1: scoring a bunch of points.
- 52:43Speaker 3: But if we won seventeen to three, it's like, okay, yeah,
- 52:47Speaker 3: I mean we don't feel great, but it's.
- 52:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, if it if it's if it's yeah,
- 52:53Speaker 1: if it's under twenty, I would say for either one
- 52:56Speaker 1: of them, maybe Houston Christian, you go, maybe hunder twenty
- 52:59Speaker 1: five or thirty, but better than Act they could be.
- 53:03Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. I know they wont
- 53:06Speaker 1: sixty nine. Nothing gives an a I in a I
- 53:09Speaker 1: A team week one, So yeah, I that that part's
- 53:13Speaker 1: not do I do. I I think our range of
- 53:15Speaker 1: outcomes of or these games are gonna go. We're pretty
- 53:20Speaker 1: like they're probably gonna be blowouts. Obviously, if things are tight,
- 53:25Speaker 1: you still win, you still appreciate the win, but then
- 53:28Speaker 1: you're you are really mean, we've had those against several
- 53:31Speaker 1: of these teams. We really have. I just don't think that.
- 53:34Speaker 1: I don't think Akron or Houston Christian. I don't. I
- 53:38Speaker 1: don't even think they're the quality though that we've seen
- 53:40Speaker 1: of these non conference games that we've played in the
- 53:44Speaker 1: past four or five years. And that's maybe giving a
- 53:47Speaker 1: little more credit to this year's team and where we're at.
- 53:50Speaker 1: But I don't, I don't. I think a lot of
- 53:52Speaker 1: those past teams would also beat this year's acron team. Oh,
- 53:57Speaker 1: it's also mentioning too, not that it matters, but cannot
- 54:00Speaker 1: play in the postseason because their players are dumb. You
- 54:04Speaker 1: guys know that. Yep, they didn't meet the academic criteria
- 54:11Speaker 1: season events.
- 54:12Speaker 4: So it doesn't matter. They were't gonna make a bull game.
- 54:18Speaker 1: I mean maybe Wyoming, but they playing the MAC But
- 54:21Speaker 1: I don't think they probably will. But maybe they will
- 54:24Speaker 1: that that was a big preseason top and maybe they'll
- 54:27Speaker 1: play with some fire because they're you know, they're just
- 54:30Speaker 1: a bunch of not smart humans and they just go
- 54:33Speaker 1: around flying around. I don't think that's the case. I
- 54:35Speaker 1: just don't think they're primary smart.
- 54:37Speaker 5: So poor it's like two point you have to have
- 54:42Speaker 5: like a two point oh GPA for a team.
- 54:44Speaker 2: What is the GP require it?
- 54:46Speaker 4: Yeah, look looked it up real quick.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Don't I think it's also I really don't care. It's
- 54:52Speaker 1: not not good.
- 54:54Speaker 4: It's yeah, I don't.
- 54:59Speaker 5: What you honest see is you don't want Acron to
- 55:02Speaker 5: put up a lot of points at the getting shut
- 55:03Speaker 5: out at wayoming that's the main thing.
- 55:05Speaker 1: I agree that they get more than twenty, it's not
- 55:07Speaker 1: gonna be pretty.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Yeah, that's that we'd be worried. Is if on that
- 55:11Speaker 5: your offenseidet the bottom the game gonna be to worried
- 55:13Speaker 5: about either way, what it looks like the defense is
- 55:15Speaker 5: what you're gonna have your eyes on this week.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I guess dak if we win forty nine
- 55:19Speaker 1: to twenty one, like defensively, you're going in. But even
- 55:25Speaker 1: then that's still I don't know.
- 55:28Speaker 3: It's ninety percent of student athletes. Now this is just
- 55:31Speaker 3: the Gemini AI overview, so I take that as you will. Well,
- 55:35Speaker 3: ninety percent of the student athletes at the institution must
- 55:37Speaker 3: have a minimum overall grade point average necessary to graduate,
- 55:40Speaker 3: such as one point eight.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Wow.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 55:51Speaker 3: The over under was first seven and a half as
- 55:53Speaker 3: it moved at all. Who know, I have looked at
- 55:57Speaker 3: the updated SPA.
- 55:58Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Implied line seven basically.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, spreads thirty four and a half points.
- 56:08Speaker 2: Yeah, the yeah point spread.
- 56:10Speaker 5: Better better get your spread beat. Saying there might not
- 56:12Speaker 5: be a spread for next week's game. I mean you'll
- 56:15Speaker 5: be able to find one.
- 56:17Speaker 1: In today's world. You can find them. Yeah, you can
- 56:21Speaker 1: find them.
- 56:23Speaker 2: Dan Arian Bonner out for this season with the ACL tear.
- 56:26Speaker 1: We talk about that, but we can talk about that
- 56:29Speaker 1: more maybe next week. It you know, it is a
- 56:34Speaker 1: guy that we need to find people to replace. But
- 56:36Speaker 1: we're gonna we're gonna We're gonna see multiple guys this
- 56:38Speaker 1: week anyways. But we're gonna see who the people are
- 56:42Speaker 1: and who steps up.
- 56:43Speaker 3: And that's probably the most exciting part about these games
- 56:45Speaker 3: is you get to see I agree, bench guys.
- 56:48Speaker 1: The bench, the prospects, and you know what, I hope
- 56:51Speaker 1: we see t J Latif a little bit too. I
- 56:54Speaker 1: we don't want to see him at all outside of
- 56:55Speaker 1: these two games ever, but I want to see that
- 56:59Speaker 1: if something were to have happened, we might be Okay,
- 57:02Speaker 1: what things are gonna look like like, Dak big game
- 57:08Speaker 1: for your second favorite team, Oklahoma.
- 57:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I cannot wait for this. So this was just
- 57:15Speaker 5: kind I was talking about Vanilla that first game they played,
- 57:18Speaker 5: I was I walked out pissed. But they didn't show
- 57:22Speaker 5: literally anything in that first game, which which I get
- 57:24Speaker 5: why they didn't because you got Michigan coming out next week. God,
- 57:31Speaker 5: I don't know. Michigan is always scares the crap on
- 57:33Speaker 5: me because they could just run, running it into a
- 57:38Speaker 5: death who all game long. And what scares me is
- 57:41Speaker 5: it looks like Underwood they finally have a quarterback.
- 57:45Speaker 4: I still think.
- 57:46Speaker 5: I was really impressed in my tear, but god, dang Venables.
- 57:53Speaker 5: Venables needs to have an offense. Their defense looks good again.
- 57:58Speaker 5: I mean they played on wise states.
- 57:59Speaker 4: You don't know, but it's it. I'm a little bit worried.
- 58:05Speaker 1: All right, Deck, put you on the spot. Name how
- 58:07Speaker 1: many Oklahoma players you can name? Right now, go.
- 58:11Speaker 4: My tear. Yeah that's it.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 58:20Speaker 4: I did watch the full game. I did watch the
- 58:24Speaker 4: full game.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Oh use, oh use. Favored win by five and a half.
- 58:27Speaker 4: Five and a half. Yeh. I don't like that at all.
- 58:29Speaker 4: I wouldn't touch that.
- 58:31Speaker 2: I don't think I like that either.
- 58:33Speaker 1: I mean, I'm excited to I Well, it'll be during
- 58:36Speaker 1: our games, so probably won't be able to watch it,
- 58:38Speaker 1: but at least see what Michigan's made of. I mean
- 58:44Speaker 1: it's as a fan not being concerned about these next two.
- 58:48Speaker 1: You want to see what Michigan's got. So yeah, if
- 58:50Speaker 1: Oklahoma comes out and wins thirty four seventeen, your year,
- 58:55Speaker 1: that ain't gonna happen.
- 58:57Speaker 3: They could. I'm gonna give Michigan straight out those points. Yes, Wow,
- 59:05Speaker 3: Oklahoma is terrible. They've all they don its. No, they're terrible.
- 59:10Speaker 3: I don't care what they're ranking is Oklahoma's bad, but.
- 59:15Speaker 4: They finally have a quarterback I don't know.
- 59:18Speaker 5: Apparently yeah, and apparently he gambles so bad guy. But
- 59:31Speaker 5: I'll go, God, I don't I'll go thirty five thirty
- 59:36Speaker 5: one Oklahoma.
- 59:37Speaker 4: In that game.
- 59:43Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 59:44Speaker 1: I don't even know.
- 59:46Speaker 5: Yeah, that's you can't think anything away on Oklahoma.
- 59:56Speaker 2: No one's taking the points.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: You took Michigan.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Sorry, no, you yeah, you're right, I'm taking out point.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: You guys are about score prediction Nebraska actor.

- 1:00:30Speaker 4: to ten.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I do think with everything that we said, I think
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Holderson's gonna come out here. I think he's gonna try to.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I just I think he's gonna come out and try
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: to not make fans happy, but just show the team that, no,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: we can be explosive and here's why, and not really
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: take the gas off the pedal, which I think could
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: result in its bettually in the third or fourth quarter
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: a couple of late touchdowns to get us some extra points.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: I think he's going to keep it going just to
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: not not to prove a point, but just to show
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: that Nope, like we don't have to be conservative, we
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: can do this. So all right, Well we may have
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: a tailgate pod. I don't know. Oh yeah, it's a
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: little bit different now that we're on video, but we will.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: We'll see what we can work up with on on Saturday.
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: Wait one second, b lock of the Week Illinois minus
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: two and a halfgns Duke.
