- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:05Happy hump day. We've officially hit the middle
- 0:07of the week and I'm really hoping that this episode helps
- 0:11reset your focus and can carry you throughout the rest of the
- 0:16week study. But today we will be continuing
- 0:19through Matthew. We're going to be in chapter 15.
- 0:22And as much as I wish I had time to read the entire passage, I am
- 0:27just going to read parts that I truly want to emphasize to you
- 0:32all, but also want to encourage you go back, read it all the way
- 0:37through on your own. Because I do believe God wants
- 0:40to open your eyes to see things specifically that are for you.
- 0:45And He always meets us personally in His words.
- 0:48So I am going to start in verse one.
- 0:52This is Jesus teaching about inner purity.
- 0:55Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from
- 0:59Jerusalem and asked, why do your disciples break the tradition of
- 1:03the elders? They don't wash their hands
- 1:05before they eat. Jesus replied.
- 1:08And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your
- 1:11tradition? OK, I'm going to skip over it
- 1:13says Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your
- 1:17tradition, you hypocrites. Isaiah was right when he
- 1:21prophesied about you. These people honor me with their
- 1:24lips, but their hearts are far from me.
- 1:27They worship me in vain. Their teachings are merely human
- 1:32rules. And then he says, what comes out
- 1:35of their mouth, that is what defiles them, and then I'm going
- 1:38to get to the end of it. Are you still so dull?
- 1:42Jesus asked them. Don't you see that whatever
- 1:45enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the
- 1:48body? But the things that come out of
- 1:51a person's mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.
- 1:55For out of the heart comes evil thoughts.
- 1:57Murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false
- 2:01testimony, slander. These are what defile a person.
- 2:06But eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.
- 2:10OK, so in this chapter, the Pharisees and the Jewish
- 2:13teachers, they are confronting Jesus.
- 2:16They are so extremely focused on what the law says in the
- 2:21tradition and outward obedience. But The thing is that over time,
- 2:26their devotion to this tradition, it turns into
- 2:29legalism, and they're so committed to maintaining these
- 2:34ritualistic things that they lose sight of why they were even
- 2:39created and what the purpose is. And so this is what Jesus is
- 2:43bringing back-to-back to us. It's not about what you do for
- 2:48God, it's about what God did for you.
- 2:51And I'm going to say that again so that it really sticks because
- 2:54it's so important. It's not about what you do for
- 2:58God, it's about what God did for you.
- 3:01And I believe that when you understand this, it completely
- 3:04reframes how you view faith. So let's go into traditions.
- 3:10The purpose, things like church and communion and Bible studies,
- 3:14they are awesome things. They're good, they're meant to
- 3:17guide us, but they do not replace a relationship.
- 3:21They help us understand God's law more fully so that we can
- 3:25better love Him and serve Him and obey Him.
- 3:28But they are meant to be a way to express gratitude to our holy
- 3:34God. They're not a way to earn
- 3:36approval or our salvation. And the thing with the Pharisees
- 3:40is that they follow the traditions as the end goal
- 3:44instead of allowing them to point toward the heart of God.
- 3:49So Jesus, he is not afraid to call them out.
- 3:52He calls them hypocrites. And The thing is, they knew a
- 3:57lot about God, but they didn't actually know him personally.
- 4:02And this is something that I relate to and is a part of my
- 4:06own testimony because I grew up in a Christian household.
- 4:11Praise God. I'm so thankful for that.
- 4:13And I got to go to church and go to Sunday school, but I didn't
- 4:17truly pursue a personal relationship with God until much
- 4:21later. And I wish I had done it so much
- 4:25earlier. I was more concerned with doing
- 4:27all the right things than seeing Jesus rightly and letting my
- 4:33worship and things that I was doing be out of a pure heart and
- 4:37pure motives. And so if that's where you are
- 4:39today, I just want to say, don't wait because you have an
- 4:44invitation and an offer on the table into a true, real
- 4:48relationship with God right now. And Jesus is making it clear in
- 4:53this passage that God cares so much more about the condition of
- 4:57our hearts than what our outward image looks like.
- 5:00So I want to ask you right now reflect on this, How healthy is
- 5:05your heart? Just like we go to physical
- 5:08checkups with the doctor and we do this yearly, we need to
- 5:12examine our hearts regularly. And frankly, we need to do it
- 5:17daily because what you're feeding your heart, it matters.
- 5:21And what you take in through your eyes and through your ears,
- 5:25that is what is coming out of your heart and it shows up in
- 5:30your life. And we're often so careful about
- 5:33what we put in our bodies physically.
- 5:36So much of our world today is taking a deeper look into what
- 5:40are the foods we're eating, the oils.
- 5:42I'm sure y'all have heard about all of that.
- 5:44But we should care even more about what we're feeding our
- 5:49hearts. Because y'all, that's what
- 5:51impacts us forever. It directly translates into our
- 5:56eternity. So Jesus, it's not that he's not
- 6:00saying external things make us unclean.
- 6:02It's what comes from within. It's what we're thinking about
- 6:06and what we're speaking. That's what shows what's
- 6:09happening in our hearts. And when we're consistently
- 6:12watching things or listening, listening to things that are
- 6:16unholy, this produces unholy actions.
- 6:20It might seem like not a lot at first, but it is a slippery
- 6:26slope to go down. And personally, I noticed such a
- 6:29major difference when I started analyzing and paying attention
- 6:34to the music that I listened to and the shows I was watching.
- 6:38I used to think of this was so extreme.
- 6:41I had heard people say like, yeah, I cut out all secular
- 6:44music. And in my head I was like, OK,
- 6:47yeah, that's not for me. I was like a Top T Swift
- 6:51listener. And not throwing shade on her,
- 6:54but when I did start paying attention to OK, this is the
- 6:59song I'm listening to. Or like I'm watching a show that
- 7:03is maybe not honoring the Lord. Like my emotions changed and so
- 7:09did my cravings and my desires. And God is in the business of
- 7:12transforming us from the inside out.
- 7:15So when his Spirit is daily at work and you sanctifying you,
- 7:19that is just a fancy term for setting you apart.
- 7:22You naturally grow, attract less attracted to worldly things.
- 7:26And this is kind of similar to like how your body might react
- 7:31to super sugary unhealthy foods. Like personally, my body rejects
- 7:36it. Your habits begin to change when
- 7:39you let Him transform you. So my challenge for us today is
- 7:44instead of obsessing over perfectly keeping all the rules
- 7:50and the traditions, let your focus be more on knowing your
- 7:54perfect Savior more intimately. Because when the heart is
- 7:58changed, then your life and the way you just live your
- 8:02day-to-day, that will follow. So I want to pray over us.
- 8:07Dear God, we ask you to give us a stronger conviction and a
- 8:13clearer conscience. Would you expose things in our
- 8:16lives that are unclean and are just dishonouring you?
- 8:22Lord, we need your strength to resist the desires of our flesh
- 8:27and help us pursue godliness in our day-to-day lives.
- 8:32Would you help us better understand your heart, Father,
- 8:36so that we can grow to reflect Jesus more clearly?
- 8:41Lord, we want our lives to be set apart for You as Your holy
- 8:45and blameless and pure children. We want to naturally point
- 8:50others to Jesus, so keep us from being distracted from all of the
- 8:56rules and the regulations. May they be upheld as a natural
- 9:02response to who you are. And would you grow our desire to
- 9:06truly know you as our perfect Savior.
- 9:10We pray this all in your holy name, Jesus.
- 9:12Amen. OK, so that is today's episode
- 9:17and I hope that it spoke to you. And I'm praying for you guys,
- 9:22for every single person listening.
- 9:24And I'm so excited for recording tomorrow.
- 9:27See y'all later.
