- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everybody. It's Adam Kaplan here for Inside the Birds.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And that man you see to my left in zoom
- 0:15Speaker 1: Land is Greg co self from NFL. And it's Vault,
- 0:18Speaker 1: by the way, wearing a button down shirt. Now, Greg,
- 0:21Speaker 1: you know you don't need to get dressed up for
- 0:22Speaker 1: the show. You know that. Look at me.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Somebody needs to bring some class to the operation.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Apparently, yeah, apparently I was in the memo that most
- 0:30Speaker 1: are sent out. But so on today's show, because we've
- 0:33Speaker 1: had Greg nine head coaching changes, right, we have eight
- 0:37Speaker 1: if you filled. John Harball's going to be the Giants
- 0:39Speaker 1: head coach. But we know the Eagles need their coordinator.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They let Kevin Mitula go out of that role. But
- 0:45Speaker 1: the bottom line is, there are only so many good
- 0:47Speaker 1: ones to go around, and let's talk about the ones
- 0:50Speaker 1: we know of called plays before who are going to
- 0:52Speaker 1: be in demand. And let's get started with a guy
- 0:55Speaker 1: I am a huge fan of never met Todd Monkin,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but this guy's pretty good. What are your thoughts on
- 0:59Speaker 1: Todd Mankin's scheme? Well, let me just say one thing
- 1:01Speaker 1: as far as head coaching.
- 1:03Speaker 2: To me, the balance for an organization is, are you
- 1:08Speaker 2: looking for a guy who's a CEO type. Obviously that's
- 1:11Speaker 2: what John Harball is. I'm not suggesting he doesn't know
- 1:14Speaker 2: anything about offens or defense, but clearly he's a CEO
- 1:16Speaker 2: type and be very successful in that role versus someone
- 1:21Speaker 2: who's a great play caller, whether with a great scheme,
- 1:24Speaker 2: whether it be offense or defense. Because automatically those guys
- 1:29Speaker 2: are not necessarily great head coaches. Sometimes they are. I mean,
- 1:32Speaker 2: look at Mike McDonald in Seattle. He's turned out to
- 1:35Speaker 2: be a terrific head coach. But it doesn't always work.
- 1:38Speaker 2: As you know, you've been doing this a long time,
- 1:40Speaker 2: just like I have. Just because someone might be able
- 1:42Speaker 2: to put together a great outfensive scheme and call plays
- 1:45Speaker 2: doesn't automatically mean they're a great head coach. So, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: organizations have to really try to find that balance, you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: because it's very easy to look at a guy and say, man,
- 1:54Speaker 2: that guy's a great play caller. That's a whole different
- 1:57Speaker 2: deal than being a head lead.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Kase shaw MCA is obviously brilliant, right. He was
- 2:02Speaker 1: thirty one thirty two when he became a head coach,
- 2:04Speaker 1: which was just seen as are you serious? And obviously
- 2:07Speaker 1: you got to give Kevin Demoff for the Rams and
- 2:12Speaker 1: uh kranky stan krounky credit. I mean, it's just an
- 2:15Speaker 1: unbelievable hind and you never know, really know, like and
- 2:18Speaker 1: you don't know that thing good.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Now I was gonna say you don't know. You can
- 2:22Speaker 2: obviously you go through a process in which you feel
- 2:25Speaker 2: that you have a very good idea, but you don't know.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And look, as you know, whether it's players or coaches,
- 2:32Speaker 2: if things are going well, everything's wonderful. It's what happens
- 2:34Speaker 2: when things aren't going well, and that invariably happens during
- 2:38Speaker 2: the NFL season.
- 2:39Speaker 1: All right, So the guy who's going to bring up
- 2:40Speaker 1: either time you.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Mentioned if you want to go back to him, well will.
- 2:43Speaker 1: But one thing I do want to mention on your
- 2:44Speaker 1: point about it's kind of like I've always said, North Turner,
- 2:47Speaker 1: who is brilliant right as a coordinator, just legendary love norv.
- 2:51Speaker 1: But not everyone is a successful head coach. It's some success,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but someone happened with the Raiders and you got fired some.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But the line is, each situation is different and the
- 3:03Speaker 1: circumstances are different. So that brings us to Todd Monkin.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Todd Monkin Greg everywhere he's been, like the work he
- 3:09Speaker 1: did with Lamar Jackson will get to a new tape study. Sure,
- 3:12Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher brought this up, but I totally forgot when
- 3:16Speaker 1: Ry Fitzpatrick went off. He had a great three quarters
- 3:18Speaker 1: of a season for the Buccaneers. Monkett and with the
- 3:20Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Bucks was his OC under Derg Cutter. So
- 3:24Speaker 1: let's talk about your You're watching Todd Monkin and his
- 3:27Speaker 1: work over the years.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Well, I think one of the things that you like
- 3:30Speaker 2: about Todd Monkin is he's shown that he can deal
- 3:34Speaker 2: with a lot of different personnel packages and different concepts
- 3:38Speaker 2: based on those different personnel packages. So he's not limited.
- 3:42Speaker 2: In other words, you don't say that's a Todd Monkin
- 3:44Speaker 2: offense and that's it. You know, he's shown he can
- 3:46Speaker 2: do a lot of different things. Look what he's done
- 3:48Speaker 2: in Baltimore or where he ended up going back because Lamar
- 3:52Speaker 2: was clearly comfortable with this where he went back to
- 3:54Speaker 2: playing a lot out of twenty one personnel and twenty
- 3:57Speaker 2: two personnel and playing Patrick Ricard. But yet he he's
- 4:00Speaker 2: also very very good out of eleven personnel with three
- 4:02Speaker 2: wide receivers. So you know, there's not just one thing
- 4:06Speaker 2: you say. When you look at Todd Monkin, he can
- 4:08Speaker 2: mix and match and be very effective. So he has
- 4:11Speaker 2: an expansive thought process as far as the use of personnel,
- 4:16Speaker 2: the use of formations, the use of motion. There's a
- 4:18Speaker 2: lot there that allows him to be expansive in how
- 4:22Speaker 2: he goes about attacking modern day NFL defenses.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So, Greg, on that point, there's a very good chance
- 4:30Speaker 1: he goes with John Harball to the Giants. Okay, and
- 4:34Speaker 1: we know Giant fans are watching. This shows more about
- 4:36Speaker 1: the spectrum of all the opening. So Lick Davis coming
- 4:39Speaker 1: back from the ACL you know about Slayton and other talent,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and with Jackson Dart, we got to talk about it.
- 4:44Speaker 1: You've seen his tape a lot. How do you think
- 4:46Speaker 1: market to fit in here?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I think it fits well. You know, Dark to me
- 4:50Speaker 2: is a quarterback and obviously, well we hope Scativa will
- 4:52Speaker 2: be back. You know, who knows that it was a
- 4:54Speaker 2: bad injury, but let's assume he's back. You know, they're
- 4:56Speaker 2: a team that can line up in different personnel packages
- 5:00Speaker 2: and be effective in all of them. They can have
- 5:02Speaker 2: a strong inside run game with scatabow they can line
- 5:05Speaker 2: up with three wide receivers. They've got tight ends. They've
- 5:08Speaker 2: got And again I don't know who's a free agent
- 5:10Speaker 2: and who's not. You know that better than I, So
- 5:11Speaker 2: I'm only speaking about the players that were there this year.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You know, maybe some guys a free agent and won't
- 5:16Speaker 2: be there. But all I'm saying is, assuming Bellinger and
- 5:19Speaker 2: Deo Johnson are there, they can line up in twelve
- 5:21Speaker 2: personnel with two tight ends. So there's a lot of
- 5:24Speaker 2: pieces there for the giants that fit. How Todd Monkin
- 5:28Speaker 2: with his multiple concepts, can run an offense, and you know,
- 5:32Speaker 2: you certainly want to put Dart in the gun and
- 5:34Speaker 2: allow him to use his running ability. Maybe not as
- 5:37Speaker 2: much as he did this year, but I mean it's
- 5:39Speaker 2: certainly a factor as you put together an offensive scheme.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And of course he's very much used to that from
- 5:45Speaker 2: playing it at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin. So you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: there's a lot of pieces in place that would allow
- 5:52Speaker 2: Todd Monkin to run that expansive offense that I mentioned.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Another guy, now, he's got head coaching interviews, he's got
- 5:59Speaker 1: teams are interested in him as at OC. That would
- 6:01Speaker 1: be Mike McDaniel, the former Dolphins head coach. So if
- 6:05Speaker 1: he gets hired as an OC, greg, what can you expect?
- 6:09Speaker 2: Yeah, do you know Mike McDaniel at all? I know
- 6:12Speaker 2: he's brilliant.
- 6:13Speaker 1: No, he's very I find I've been around him at
- 6:15Speaker 1: like owner's meetings. He's he's different. He's very friendly, he's
- 6:20Speaker 1: very smart, good.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I had an opportunity at an event a number of
- 6:23Speaker 2: years ago to really spend meaningful time with him and
- 6:25Speaker 2: talk to him. The guys are savant. I mean, you
- 6:28Speaker 2: talk to him, it's like talking you know. He talks
- 6:30Speaker 2: about the game like he's splitting the at him. I mean,
- 6:33Speaker 2: he's one of those guys you know, and and and
- 6:35Speaker 2: you try to keep up. It's like, oh my god,
- 6:38Speaker 2: you know. And and normally when I talk to coaches,
- 6:40Speaker 2: I know exactly what they're talking about, even when they
- 6:42Speaker 2: go into the weeds. With him, I felt like I
- 6:45Speaker 2: needed a glossary. I mean it was it was crazy.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And he's such a nice guy, that's the thing. He's
- 6:49Speaker 2: such a nice guy. But yeah, but the point is,
- 6:52Speaker 2: is the big question to me with Mike McDaniel, because
- 6:56Speaker 2: he's so much from the Shanahan tree, and even in
- 6:59Speaker 2: Miami was essentially a version of the Shanahan tree. And
- 7:04Speaker 2: again I'm sure he did things that weren't you know,
- 7:08Speaker 2: if you're not there, you don't know exactly all the
- 7:10Speaker 2: tweaks and all that. But for the most part, he
- 7:12Speaker 2: ran because of the quarterback in Miami. He essentially ran
- 7:16Speaker 2: a timing rhythm pass game with a very multiple run game,
- 7:20Speaker 2: and he is known as the run game guy, you know.
- 7:23Speaker 2: So the question is, depending on where he goes, does
- 7:27Speaker 2: he have to run that offense or because he's so
- 7:30Speaker 2: intelligent as he through the years, you know, really studied
- 7:34Speaker 2: other offenses and depending on you know, who the quarterback is,
- 7:38Speaker 2: because not every quarterback can run that style of offense.
- 7:42Speaker 2: You know, that's a specific style of offense that is
- 7:45Speaker 2: very timing rhythm based in the past game, some quarterbacks
- 7:48Speaker 2: can do that, as Tua that was his game. That's
- 7:53Speaker 2: you know, obviously when you're with Shanahan, we know Purdy
- 7:55Speaker 2: can do that. There's certain guys who can do it,
- 7:57Speaker 2: but not everybody can. So the question with Mike mcdan
- 8:00Speaker 2: know is does he has he gone beyond that in
- 8:04Speaker 2: just his study as he's you know, in in off seasons,
- 8:07Speaker 2: and if he goes somewhere where the quarterback is not
- 8:09Speaker 2: exactly that guy. And I'm not saying he's going to
- 8:11Speaker 2: be the Eagles coordinator, but let's assume that that happened.
- 8:15Speaker 2: You know, Jalen Hurts is not exactly that guy. He
- 8:18Speaker 2: has his own set of his own skill set trades,
- 8:21Speaker 2: but he's not that guy. So now that you run,
- 8:24Speaker 2: you have to run a different pass game.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You know, with two, it's interesting you talked about it
- 8:29Speaker 1: that he might have been a good fit, but when
- 8:31Speaker 1: Two would hold out of the ball and not be
- 8:33Speaker 1: sure he get hit, like that was the issue with two,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and he that's why he got bench. He's just quick, quick, quick, you.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Got And also he was not a late in the
- 8:41Speaker 2: down quarterback like if he couldn't get it out with time.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I mean, Two at his best was boy, hit that back.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Football comes out minding rhythm, really precise ball location. But
- 8:51Speaker 2: as defenses started to get a better feel for what
- 8:55Speaker 2: he could do and what he couldn't do, some of
- 8:57Speaker 2: those things got taken away and then two it gets stuck.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So you know, we'll see. But he's But the one
- 9:02Speaker 2: thing about Mike McDaniel is he truly is brilliant.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The next guy I want to talk about. I've been
- 9:08Speaker 1: a fan of as a play caller. It's not so
- 9:09Speaker 1: much as a head coach, but a guy that's going
- 9:11Speaker 1: to be in the man. I know some head coach
- 9:13Speaker 1: head coaching candidates have interested in Brian Daballs being their
- 9:17Speaker 1: potential offense coordinator. Now today Friday, he's gonna interview with
- 9:20Speaker 1: the Titans for their head coaching job. But let's just
- 9:22Speaker 1: talk about Brian dab And I know the Eagles have interest.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Several teams will probably have interested in him. God's a
- 9:27Speaker 1: good coach, but you've watched his offense, whether the Giants,
- 9:29Speaker 1: he's been in other places college football where you thought
- 9:32Speaker 1: in Brian Dables a play caller.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Brian Nables a fascinating guy to me. And I don't
- 9:36Speaker 2: know Brian Dable, but obviously he did an unbelievable job
- 9:40Speaker 2: getting Josh Allen's career started. Because, as we all know,
- 9:43Speaker 2: when Josh Allen came into the league, and yes he
- 9:45Speaker 2: was a high pick, and certainly everybody saw just the
- 9:48Speaker 2: physical trades, but he was just a wild stallion and
- 9:51Speaker 2: there were a lot of questions as to whether he
- 9:52Speaker 2: could ever become a good player because you know, at
- 9:55Speaker 2: the time he came in the league. When he threw
- 9:57Speaker 2: the ball, you know, for a lot of people, it
- 9:59Speaker 2: seemed like no one knew where it was going. And
- 10:03Speaker 2: obviously that's all changed. We don't need a big discussion
- 10:05Speaker 2: of Josh Allen, but the point is he was there
- 10:08Speaker 2: and he coached Josh Allen, and as you well know,
- 10:12Speaker 2: he coached him hard. You know, it was not a
- 10:14Speaker 2: case of hey, you're wonderful, let's you know, let's sing
- 10:17Speaker 2: come by. Ah. He coached him hard, and Josh Allen
- 10:20Speaker 2: was the kind of player you know, at that age
- 10:22Speaker 2: certainly and maybe even to this day, I don't know,
- 10:25Speaker 2: you know, we're not there that Josh was receptive to it,
- 10:28Speaker 2: and he really turned him with his scheme and into
- 10:32Speaker 2: a really good player. And I thought his scheme really
- 10:34Speaker 2: fit Josh well because there was a lot of intermediate
- 10:37Speaker 2: and vertical route concepts that Brian Dable really leaned on.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And we know Josh Allen can do that, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 2: because he can do anything really just with his pure
- 10:44Speaker 2: physical traits. You know, it's funny you mentioned Tennessee, and
- 10:47Speaker 2: who knows what Tennessee is going to do. But I
- 10:50Speaker 2: personally think that his style would fit Cam Ward, because
- 10:54Speaker 2: I think cam Ward is more like that than let's
- 10:56Speaker 2: say a Mike McDaniel, you know. So I don't know
- 10:59Speaker 2: where it goes, you know, I certainly don't have any
- 11:01Speaker 2: inside information, but I think Dable's a really interesting guy
- 11:05Speaker 2: in terms of the kind of offense that that I
- 11:08Speaker 2: think he'd ultimately like to run, you know. And again,
- 11:11Speaker 2: he's been coaching a long time, He's been around a
- 11:13Speaker 2: lot of people. He's he had stints with Nick Saban,
- 11:16Speaker 2: you know, he you know, he's a guy that's that's
- 11:18Speaker 2: This is not his first rodeo either, you know. A
- 11:21Speaker 2: tough situation with the Giants because they simply did not
- 11:23Speaker 2: have an offensive line at all, and really they had
- 11:26Speaker 2: no run, you know. I mean they had Barkley, but
- 11:28Speaker 2: Barkley was hurt a lot, so he was just missing
- 11:31Speaker 2: people and you know, and and it was just a
- 11:35Speaker 2: really hard situation. So we'll see, you know. But I
- 11:39Speaker 2: actually like the things he does in the past game.
- 11:42Speaker 1: The next guy I want to talk about now he's
- 11:44Speaker 1: no longer with washing this Cliff Kingsbury. I know I
- 11:46Speaker 1: was told that ham Dan Quinn simply did not see
- 11:49Speaker 1: eye on the structure of the offense, but I thought
- 11:51Speaker 1: he did a great job. They rather the ball better
- 11:53Speaker 1: than I expected. Let's see wherever Cliff Kingsbury go goes.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I know he's definitely the man as an offense coordinator.
- 11:58Speaker 1: He's also getting to some head coaching looks, but what
- 12:01Speaker 1: do you think of his play call?
- 12:02Speaker 2: And so Kingsbury is one of those guys. And again
- 12:05Speaker 2: we can't. I can't speak to the personal relationship between
- 12:07Speaker 2: Kenny Quinn and Kingsbury. Yeah, either, I'm not. I wouldn't
- 12:11Speaker 2: go there anyway, That's not what I do, yep. But
- 12:13Speaker 2: you know, it's interesting how this stuff plays out over
- 12:17Speaker 2: the course of time. A year ago with Jade and Daniels,
- 12:20Speaker 2: he was a genius, you know, this year and obviously
- 12:22Speaker 2: Daniels was hurt. But obviously the offense even when Daniels played,
- 12:26Speaker 2: wasn't as good anywhere near as good as it was
- 12:28Speaker 2: a year ago. And I'm not trying to be funny,
- 12:30Speaker 2: but the way you hear people talk about him, he
- 12:32Speaker 2: must have had all the bottomy in the off season
- 12:34Speaker 2: because he became an idiot.
- 12:35Speaker 1: You know.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I always find those kinds of conversations fascinating. You know,
- 12:39Speaker 2: guy's a genius one year and then all of a sudden,
- 12:41Speaker 2: he doesn't.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Know anything, coach, you know.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think you know, one of the things
- 12:45Speaker 2: that's always impressed me about Cliff Kingsbury is he certainly
- 12:48Speaker 2: came from college as an air raid guy, spread offense.
- 12:51Speaker 2: He played in it because I believe he played for
- 12:53Speaker 2: Mike Leech so and you know, that was his background.
- 12:56Speaker 2: That's that's what he knew. But then he got to
- 12:58Speaker 2: Arizona didn't have wide receivers and he ended up playing
- 13:02Speaker 2: a lot with two tight ends, three tight ends. So
- 13:05Speaker 2: there was a clear willingness to play to what his
- 13:07Speaker 2: personnel was as opposed to saying this is my system
- 13:11Speaker 2: and we're just going to run my system. Now, I'm
- 13:14Speaker 2: sure there's more to it. And you know, I can't
- 13:16Speaker 2: speak for whether he's a good head coach bad head coach.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I certainly don't. You know, we weren't there in Washington
- 13:22Speaker 2: this year, but they had a ton of injuries. Obviously
- 13:25Speaker 2: they didn't really have wide receivers either, you know, because
- 13:28Speaker 2: McLaurin missed a lot of time. So but I remember
- 13:32Speaker 2: always thinking as I watched tape of Arizona, and you know,
- 13:36Speaker 2: Kyler Murray has his own set of issues which are
- 13:38Speaker 2: not relevant to this conversation. But I always thought that
- 13:41Speaker 2: boy Kingsbury, I just and again he doesn't need me
- 13:44Speaker 2: to say I'm impressed. I mean, who am I I'm
- 13:46Speaker 2: just some guy talking football. But the point is is
- 13:49Speaker 2: I always thought that Kingsbury did a really nice job
- 13:52Speaker 2: with playing to what his personnel was as opposed to
- 13:55Speaker 2: being wedded to a system.
- 13:58Speaker 1: So I remember, Greg, you and I have this converse.
- 14:00Speaker 1: It had to be like five years ago something like that,
- 14:02Speaker 1: where you know, he came in a lot of twelve
- 14:06Speaker 1: person excuse me, a lot eleven personnel, maybe even some ten.
- 14:08Speaker 1: And then I remember your pointing out, Hey, guess what,
- 14:10Speaker 1: he's now running a lot of twelve. Yeah, that's how
- 14:13Speaker 1: you evolved as a head coach. Is a play calling.
- 14:16Speaker 1: At some point you got to graduate to something else,
- 14:19Speaker 1: like you have to show that you could do other things.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And I thought that was Billen kings back because with
- 14:23Speaker 1: the air raid, you Titans typically don't get evolved.
- 14:26Speaker 2: No, And look, I know every year that that he
- 14:28Speaker 2: was a head coach, it seemed that they didn't play well.
- 14:30Speaker 2: He sort of mid November on and I don't know
- 14:32Speaker 2: what that means. We're not there, but a lot of people,
- 14:35Speaker 2: you know, hold that against him as a potential head
- 14:37Speaker 2: coach candidate because that, hey, look, that's the reality. They
- 14:40Speaker 2: lost games down the stretch and we don't know the
- 14:43Speaker 2: reason why, Adam, you and I were not there. But
- 14:45Speaker 2: you know, I'm sure that that's going to be if
- 14:47Speaker 2: you're interviewing him for a head coach. I would imagine
- 14:49Speaker 2: that would come up in conversation as to hey, you
- 14:52Speaker 2: played didn't one year? They started like seven and one
- 14:54Speaker 2: or eight and one, or they were phenomenal in Arizona,
- 14:57Speaker 2: I remember early and then they hit that skid late
- 15:00Speaker 2: in the season, and it seemed to happen, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 2: in multiple seasons, and you know, if you're going to
- 15:04Speaker 2: hire him as a head coach, that would be something
- 15:06Speaker 2: you'd have to work through and try to get a
- 15:08Speaker 2: feel for why, have him explain why he thought it happened,
- 15:12Speaker 2: and you know, if you're in that situation, I would
- 15:13Speaker 2: assume obviously I'm not being interviewed for a head coaching job,
- 15:16Speaker 2: but I would assume that an owner at a GM
- 15:18Speaker 2: wouldn't want to hear excuses. They wouldn't want to hear, well,
- 15:21Speaker 2: guys were injured, because you know what, guys get injured
- 15:24Speaker 2: every year.
- 15:24Speaker 3: You know, you you never know everything happen. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:28Speaker 3: exactly exactly. Last guy is interfered for a lot of
- 15:31Speaker 3: head coaching jobs. He just unfortunately was let go by
- 15:34Speaker 3: the Cleveland Browns. It's Kevin Stefanski. Yeah, what do you
- 15:37Speaker 3: think of his structure and offensive now.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Kevin Stefanski is, as you well know, is very respected
- 15:43Speaker 2: around the league as an offensive guy, which is why
- 15:45Speaker 2: he's still in the mix for head coaching positions, even
- 15:48Speaker 2: though the record with the Browns is certainly over the
- 15:51Speaker 2: recent year has not been great. My sense of Kevin
- 15:55Speaker 2: Stefanski is in an ideal world, you know, and again
- 15:58Speaker 2: now it gets down to what you're personnelities. But in
- 16:01Speaker 2: an ideal world, I think he'd like to play with
- 16:04Speaker 2: the quarterback under center, have the run game be the foundation,
- 16:07Speaker 2: have an O line that can you know, remember a
- 16:10Speaker 2: few years ago, you know, this was before Chubb had
- 16:12Speaker 2: the major injury, where they ran the ball exceptionally well.
- 16:15Speaker 2: They had the really good old line. They had those
- 16:17Speaker 2: two guards that were really really good. Wyatt Teller was
- 16:22Speaker 2: a phenomenal puller in their run game. He's still in Cleveland, obviously,
- 16:26Speaker 2: and he's been hurt a lot, but you know, and
- 16:28Speaker 2: I think he'd liked the past game to work off that.
- 16:31Speaker 2: And I think he's comfortable playing with multiple personnel packages,
- 16:35Speaker 2: whether it's twelve even thirteen eleven. I think he's comfortable
- 16:39Speaker 2: with a lot of different packages personnel formations. But I
- 16:44Speaker 2: think at his core, he'd liked to start with a
- 16:47Speaker 2: run game that in a sense dictates how defenses are
- 16:51Speaker 2: going to play you because all coaches, Adam, what they're
- 16:54Speaker 2: trying to do is they're trying to get the defense
- 16:57Speaker 2: in a situation that's somewhat what predictable, you know, where
- 17:01Speaker 2: there's minimal variants in what the defense does, and therefore
- 17:06Speaker 2: you know how you can attack it, because you know,
- 17:09Speaker 2: if you start getting into situations where the defense is
- 17:12Speaker 2: going to do multiple things, then you know that then
- 17:15Speaker 2: the defense has the tactical advantage. So you want to
- 17:18Speaker 2: be in a situation, particularly in normal down in distance, okay,
- 17:21Speaker 2: where the defense has as little variants as possible, because
- 17:25Speaker 2: then you know how to attack what they do.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So I know with Kevin's career it's West Coast based. Yeah,
- 17:32Speaker 1: it was gonna he was gonna be Ironically, the Giants
- 17:34Speaker 1: offensive corner, but the Giants blocks using the Vikings blocked him,
- 17:37Speaker 1: which turned out to be a good thing because he
- 17:38Speaker 1: would later become the Browns side coach. But he was
- 17:40Speaker 1: gonna go with Pat Sherman and the Giants he got blocked.
- 17:42Speaker 1: He coached on Gary Kubiak, so he's got his roots
- 17:45Speaker 1: are West Coast. He starts and see that's why I
- 17:48Speaker 1: mentioned it.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And I'm glad you mentioned Kubak started in a row
- 17:50Speaker 2: because that's what Kubiak was.
- 17:52Speaker 1: And wide zone actually ran into Kevin many years ago
- 17:55Speaker 1: because when I go to training camps, I asked coaches, hey,
- 17:57Speaker 1: what's your background? What are your court blaze that he
- 17:59Speaker 1: loved the wide zone, So yeah, there you go. So
- 18:03Speaker 1: a lot of you know what I love about this
- 18:05Speaker 1: group of five. You've got Manka, it's got diversity in
- 18:09Speaker 1: terms of a scheme. You mentioned McDaniel has showing the
- 18:12Speaker 1: willness to change some things up to Fanski clearly his
- 18:15Speaker 1: added stuff, gay ball. You mention a lot of different
- 18:18Speaker 1: things and Kingsbary's evov where he got criticized heavily, like okay,
- 18:23Speaker 1: enough for the air raid and he evolves. So it's
- 18:25Speaker 1: a good job by those guys.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 21:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and look, the game is ever changing. It's cyclical,
- 21:56Speaker 2: you know, there's and you have to be able, you know.
- 22:01Speaker 2: And again, you know what I do, and I think
- 22:02Speaker 2: people listening know what I do. I just sit and
- 22:04Speaker 2: watch tape and you see a lot of different things,
- 22:06Speaker 2: and you know, no matter what side of the ball
- 22:08Speaker 2: you're on, I think you have to be able to evolve.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You have to be able to you know, obviously everyone
- 22:14Speaker 2: has a core philosophy. You have because you have to
- 22:16Speaker 2: start somewhere. Yeah, you know, it's not a pope prit
- 22:19Speaker 2: Let's throw stuff against the wall and see what works.
- 22:22Speaker 2: You have to have a core philosophy. But within that philosophy,
- 22:25Speaker 2: you have to have the ability to adjust based on
- 22:28Speaker 2: your personnel at any given moment and the opponents you're facing.
- 22:33Speaker 2: You know, there's there's all kinds of things that go
- 22:35Speaker 2: into how you not only your core philosophy which you're
- 22:38Speaker 2: putting in starting in OTA's mini camps through training camp,
- 22:41Speaker 2: but within that philosophy has to be a mechanism for
- 22:45Speaker 2: adjustment and change based on injuries to your people and
- 22:49Speaker 2: opponents that you play during the season. So sure, if
- 22:52Speaker 2: you can't do that, it's going to be hard.
- 22:55Speaker 1: One more thing for so, I know, a big thing
- 22:58Speaker 1: for you is the NFL Matchup Show on esp And
- 23:00Speaker 1: what do you got there? What kind of concepts are
- 23:02Speaker 1: we going to see?
- 23:03Speaker 2: It's a great time of year. It's a great time
- 23:05Speaker 2: of year because you know, there's only four games this week,
- 23:07Speaker 2: so for each game has a full segment to it
- 23:10Speaker 2: because we have four segments in the show, and believe me,
- 23:12Speaker 2: we could do a full segment, We could do a
- 23:14Speaker 2: whole show on each game. But you know, it's great
- 23:17Speaker 2: when you get an opportunity to talk in a little
- 23:19Speaker 2: more detail about a specific matchup, you know, so uh,
- 23:23Speaker 2: you know, And that's what I love about this time
- 23:25Speaker 2: of year is really trying to think about the matchups,
- 23:28Speaker 2: the specific nature of matchups as opposed to very often
- 23:31Speaker 2: during the season. You know, you do a lot more
- 23:33Speaker 2: about what are the strengths of a given team, like,
- 23:35Speaker 2: you know, because you can always do film pieces at
- 23:37Speaker 2: him on what a team's foundation is. Like, let's say,
- 23:40Speaker 2: what their route concepts are, you know, foundational route concepts.
- 23:44Speaker 2: A defensive coach, what their their blitz concepts? You know,
- 23:47Speaker 2: their main blitz concepts are now with the Matchup show,
- 23:50Speaker 2: we really try to focus on the matchups per se.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So it's to me. I enjoy that a lot.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking forward to this weekend's game. So you know,
- 23:58Speaker 1: the the NFL's version, the Final Four. There are four
- 24:01Speaker 1: games there teams and yeah, it's separation Saturday Sunday. All right,
- 24:05Speaker 1: I know, I can't wait a wee. You got the
- 24:07Speaker 1: college stuff that's coming up. We got all such a
- 24:09Speaker 1: great sports here. All right, Greg, there you have it
- 24:12Speaker 1: for Greg Cosal. I'm Madam Kaplan. We'll see you next time.
