Transcript
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: What's up everybody, and welcome to another episode of Scouting the Fins right here on the 3rd Brigade podcast.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're also part of the five reason sports.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're, I'm joined today by the co-host of the off-season, Maryk, Mary, Maryk, how are we doing today?
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Osama doing well happy to be here.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: I know there's people out there.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: They're probably missing coach Eric and maybe I'm not as as good looking as coach Eric, but I'm going to try and try and fill in as best as I can this week on the episode.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: So thanks for having me.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: For sure, man, great to have you on the show.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're in the off season just a week before the rookies show up for training camp two weeks before the veterans do.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to get a glimpse of what the 2026 dolphins team will look like with a brand new offensive coordinator, a brand new defensive coordinator and
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think we know Jeff Hathley so far, I think he has been a bit trusted to run the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: But I think the big question is going to be, what's the offense going to look like?
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean, you have new offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowick, Mike McDaniel's gone.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: He's out in LA, so he's no longer running the show.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Slowick runs a similar style offense, and maybe it wasn't going so well when he left the Houston Texans just a few years ago, but we're hoping he can rebound and kind of get back to what it was like during CJ Stroud's rookie year with the Houston Texans, which was a much better offense than we saw the a couple of years after that.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, we talked a lot about Bobby Slavic last season and it seemed as if most likely his emphasis was in the passing game, which took a regression, which took a big step back, but the Miami Dolphins run game took a creative step forward.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: However, it was not as explosive as we thought
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: being out for the season, to a tongue of Iowa, not being healthy and looking to have regressed.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Those two are not necessarily on the team anymore, and the load was pretty much carried by Devon H.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and they change still here, and he is, he is your, your probably your best player overall, right?
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: Not even just offense, but defensive as well.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: Certainly, your most explosive offensive weapon after Tyre Kale left, J.L.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: and Wattle left.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're looking at guys like Greg's dulcitch to make a major step forward.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: But one guy who you need to continue to progress, even past what he did last year,
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: running back in Miami and that's Devon HN.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's going to be half Devon HN because he carried the offense.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: He was the engine.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: He was the train that kept on chugging.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: But it's going to be a different offense.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a different style of a running team.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: And because the passing offense was not efficient, not explosive,
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: uh, it led to some inconsistencies, it led to a lot of inefficiencies and led to a lot of negative runs behind the line of skirmish.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: There were 91 negative runs or runs that went for zero yards in the entire 20, 25 season for the Miami Dolphins.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: And look,
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: He's the highest paid running back on the roster, one of the higher paid players for this Miami Dolphins offense and one of the most electric running backs in the NFL.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: So if you think about it, if you average it out, almost five carries per game, Devon H. and had zero or negative yards, bringing down his brushing arts total.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which is crazy.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: You mentioned that as a song because even with the 91, 0 or less yards gained, 91 plays where that happened for the Miami Dolby's Dispass season, HN still had the highest yards for Kiri across any running back in the NFL, he had 5.7 yards for Kiri.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: a whole half a yard better than the next two running backs, James Cook, and Derek Henry, both average 5.2, so imagine what those numbers could have looked like if the Miami dolphins didn't find themselves behind the chains on second and third down, as often as they did with as many negative runs as the team had.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: before we get into all the data and the numbers and the film, we kind of know which direction the dolphins are going in, right?
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: They are going to be committed to the run with a lot of draft picks, pinged on a chain, Bobby Slowick, who comes from that shenanne style of tree, ran a lot in Houston as well.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: So this is gonna be a film and data episode at Merrick.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: because you're here on scouting the fins, you're gonna be entrenched into this as well.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: And look, though framework we're establishing kind of stems and spawns from Kyle Krabs over at Lockdown Dolphins, he also did an episode about this.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: We're not gonna go super duper in-depth, just because I also did not have a lot of time to scrape even more of the data.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: He went into the motions that were part of the run game, the screen game, the tight end as well.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: most of the time what we're going to focus on is the offensive line, the running backs, how you know those negative yards it puts the offense behind the chains, right?
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I mean, Merrick, you run for zero or negative one on first down,
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's second to 11, maybe second and 12.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: We know what it looked like all looks, second and long.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be some Tikki-Taki play, which gets three or four yards, and now you're in a third and long situation, asking to it a pass.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And hopefully that's not the same case for Mouliq Willis in this 2020 season.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and, you know,
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: In years past, Tua was able to overcome those odds, you know what I mean?
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: He was one of the better quarterbacks on the third and long situations.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: But Tua were aggressive last season, Miami as a team, as a whole, as an offense for aggressive last season.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: So now they're trying to pick up the pieces and move forward and see where they can go.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: There's not a lot of high expectations for the Miami Dolphins this upcoming year.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the overunders four and a half wins and you see a lot of people taking the under of that.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: If this team is to find success, you're going to have to see progression from the offensive line, you're going to have to get an immediate contribution from their first first round pick in Kate and Proctor.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: He slots in at left guard there.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: This team is going to have to get better.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: Jonah Savaya Naya going over to the right side.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to have to play better on his natural side.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: And if those things can happen while you add in the athleticism and the mobility of
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: surprise people and this offensive line is crazy as it sounds could possibly surprise people as well, but you know, as we're about to get into, some people are going to need to have to put it in a little bit better work a little bit better effort here.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: So we already established there were 91 total zero or negative run place.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: 50 of them, which is about 55% of that total one for negative yards.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: 41 of them were zero yards game.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: You had a negative 91.58 EPA.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: The worst single game was against New England week 18.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: the worst week by count was week seven against Cleveland.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: We all remember that game.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: That was kind of a close game against Cleveland.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: I do want to preface by saying, based on the data we scraped where the run was going,
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of the data itself, and again, we'll look at the film for this to back it up if the data backs this up or not.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: The most responsible lineman on those negative runs where the area or the gap was Patrick Paul.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: Now keep in mind, this does not take into account tight ends or wide receivers just yet.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: The most effective running back was, of course, Devon H. 49 out of 91 plays, 54% of the sample was for Devon H. The most dangerous direction where this was the worst average was towards the right tackle, Austin Jackson, Larry Borough.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, think about that right hand side.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: And we talked about it a lot, Merrick on Scouting the Fins and Dredd precarious, and I know we talked about in the Thurance precarious Discord,
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: that right tackle situation was, you know, just not good.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: That was the strong side where the run could have been with Austin Jackson, but he got hurt, Cole Strange, who was the right guard for him most of the season.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: And then,
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: you know, the tight ends, they could not block that well no matter who motion whether it was dulcic, Julian Hill, even Alec Engled, who's no longer on the team.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, the most dangers down was third down, running on third down.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: You take all of that.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you see what we saw a lot with our eyes and the data kind of backs it up, but we'll see where the data
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you mentioned Patrick Paul there, but Patrick Paul, he was healthy, he played the entire season.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: Austin Jackson was not, he got hurt.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: So we do want to clarify that the least amount of success that the Miami Dolphins had was on the right side of the offensive line, even if Patrick Paul was one of the more egregious offenders in this study.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, when we talk about the right side, right cool strange Larry Borm, Kyle Krebs said that cool strange was probably the worst offensive lineman for the one.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: Now he's starting in LA.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, now he's starting in LA.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: He's going back to Mike McDaniel, and I think there's a comfort ability over here, but in terms of the right side, it could be a jemory solid or type of situation, maybe Kate and Proctor.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: on the right side of the, I'm sorry, Jonah seven seven nine on the right side, but we're hoping his trajectory gets better too, Merrick.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you hope with him switching over to his natural side, you know, it was it was kind of a headscratcher why McDaniel was so adamant that Savannah and I needed to be on the left side last year But thankfully the the new guys in charge are moving him over to the right side and The hope is that that allows him to show some progression there.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and the thing is
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: Aaron Brewer could not necessarily help both sides out at the same time, right?
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: You had a weak spot in the left card with cold strange.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: You had awesome Jackson go down, you relied on your backup, swing tackle, and Larry Borham.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: Then on the left hand side, you had a rookie end, Jonas Vyneye.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: Now, necessarily, the numbers don't match up where, oh my god, Jonas 7ye's gap was the worst data over there.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: Well, if you listen to us a lot, then you watch the film with us a lot.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: the scheme dictates where the runner is going and the scheme dictates who has to block who.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not specifically the gap, it's the offensive line moving together.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: So if the runner is going towards all the way to the edge, data wise, Patrick Paul and Larry Warham are responsible for that.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: But when you take a look at the film,
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Jonas Avanaya, push back three, four yards, which was a normal occurrence.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: Or, oh my god, cool strange.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: His feet was just absolutely garbage.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: He got pushed back.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: The Von H.A.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: and had a negative five yard run.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Why are we still going towards this guy?
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was a right side call lapse and then Patrick Paul in his second year, you know, could not necessarily get the most amount of help.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: So Aaron, who were had to help more so towards the right side, but it was a total collapse.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: The tight ends, the motions, wide receivers, their skill players, they're not renowned blockers.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: They can only do so much.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: But as the failures compound, their failures also will be highlighted.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you know, looking ahead, Aaron Brewer, with all of the responsibility that he had on this offensive line, it kind of hurt his statistics in this study as well, which, you know, to be honest, when I started taking a look at that, that was a little surprising to me, especially because Aaron Brewer was second team all pro, just got the bag from John Eric Sullivan, but as you mentioned, it's not always on him.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when you talk about going up against Aaron Burr, he's not the biggest offensive line on there, right?
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: But he's the most athletic.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: He is the most mentally sound.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: And he has the most responsibility in terms of protection calls dictating where the runs can be going, right?
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: opposing defenses, opposing offensive linemen, you know, if they're getting into the agap against Miami, it could be a brewers protection call, but he's trying to help on Jonathan Savaya, Naya, Larry Borom, Cole Strange, whoever it is, or maybe the tight end when he's trying to motion and isn't picking up the block on the agap.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: So it becomes, you know, if failure on the stunt and the alignment, it becomes a coaching and communication failure, not just a block and failure.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: Everything in that scheme, and even
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: What's going to be Bobby Slow X game?
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to compound.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, yep.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, here's something you want to take a look at the film here and kind of break down some of these, some of these runs?
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think we'll do it a little bit later because we still couldn't want to go a little bit more into it, right?
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about the players, but then we also have to talk about the down in distance, too, right?
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: That's sure.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: It was first down runs, right?
- 14:53[SPEAKER_01]: 52 runs on first down that field.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, 57% of the time it feels.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: That is a chain starter.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: And what's the biggest thing there on first downs?
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, you want to allow yourself to get to a position to have a second in short or third in short after that.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to have no yards, no gain or negative yards on first down.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to put yourself behind the change.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: You want to stay on schedule.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're behind the chains, it could be your drive killer, right?
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: They had almost negative 1.17 yards on first down runs when you talk about zero and negative yard runs.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Those are the type of plays where we look back.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: Man, if they had past the ball, maybe three, four yards instead of expecting a three, four yard run, maybe the drive could have looked different, right?
- 15:46[SPEAKER_01]: Because when we talk in terms of data analysis, EPA,
- 15:52[SPEAKER_01]: what's the most explosive play?
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: What's the play that's going to get you the most yards, Mary?
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: With this team, it wasn't those first down runs, because like you said, 52 or the 91, 0 or negative yard runs were on first down.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: And that is a down when you as a team should expect to be able to run the football.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: And if those first down fillers are there, what's going to happen on second and third down.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: You have more pressure.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about on third down.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was the worst average.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: Stay lost almost two yards on third down on third downs when they were trying to run.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: And when they got stuffed there right on second downs.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: They had 23 field runs, which was almost negative one and a half yards, which is a big thing when you're talking about on second downs.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: So let's say for example, Mary, right?
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: To a or 20 words is able to throw a 5, 6 yard hitch to jail and model or a slant or they do a screen, right, or
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: He dumps it off to Devon H and they get five six yards on first on.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: That's a success.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: You're at second and five.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: The playbook is wide open for you.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: You can run the ball.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you keep defenses on is you could pass the ball again.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: Now you run the ball on second and four second and five.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: There's a breakdown.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: Aaron Broer has to help out Jonas Vinaya.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Borham misses his assignment.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_01]: Devon Hane, Ollie Gordon, Jalen Wright, they get, you know, plot back in extra three yards.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: Now you're in a third and seven.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: Now what do you do?
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, now you can't run the ball.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: Now at 37, you, unless you are, you know, way in your own end and you're just trying to play for the punt, you know, you have to throw the football there and when the defense knows what coming, what's coming, it makes you much easier to defend.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: Now we talk a lot about about the sides or the edges or the gaps, right?
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: The right side was definitely the worst.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: with Larry Borham, 18 negative to zero yard plays, right?
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: Lost a total of negative 23 yards.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: Cold strange, although he's only got six runs against him that were negative or zero, does not accurately capture what's being shown on film.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_01]: Austin Jackson, even though he didn't play a lot, he's got eight of those plays on film.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: and that was a total of native 23 arts.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: So when you take a look at the yards, precary and the yards for average, Austin Jackson, we know he was hurt and again in terms of the plays and we'll have one of them when we get into the film.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_01]: It did not look good.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, and I'm looking at this chart here, and again, Patrick Paul at the top of 26 for a total of negative 37, but if you take Borom's 18, you combine it with Austin Jackson's 18, now you're looking at 26 just on the right side there, and then go ahead and throw in Colstrange on the right side with six, and you start to see where the picture is being painted.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_01]: The thing about it too, Merrick, what kind of killed this offensive line was during camp, right?
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: The starting 2025 offensive line was built.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: What Mike McDaniel was asked was asking for it.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: And then James Daniels after five cents.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_01]: he goes down.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: Key on Smith was in there for three weeks.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: Cole Strange was not the answer.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Burham was stopped at Austin Jackson put on IR.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: They were running what McDaniel wanted, but they did not have the personnel, they did not have the offensive line that has the athletic system that had the perfect technique.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: And when you run those plays with the wrong personnel, it's a recipe for disaster.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: No matter how good you're running back is, no matter how good your coach is at, you know, drying up run schemes.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like we talk about with everything going wrong.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: Devon Hain was able, you know, to do so well.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what about are you're rookie in all E. Gordon?
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: What about your second year guy in jail and right because
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: They did not look the best either behind this offensive line compared to what we expected to camp time last year.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and when you break it down by Russia by running back, HN, you know, while he still had a negative yards average on these plays, you know, that's what the stats all about.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: He was roughly at just one yard, one yard lost on these plays.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: When you look at Ali Gordon, you look at Jalen Ray.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: Ali Gordon was a 1.9, so almost a full yard worse than HN.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_00]: Jalen Wright was a 2.42 yards loss.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: That was on 12 attempts, negative 29 yards on those 12 attempts.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: So averaging negative 2.42 when he was given the ball, that's going to have to change.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to have to get better.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: The dolphins are in search of talent somewhere on this offense.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: Clearly, they want to be a team that is able to impose their will and running the ball.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to need better production from all three running backs.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: But very specifically, anyone not named Devon HN.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_00]: HN is doing his job for the most part.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to need more from Ali Gordon and Jaila Wright.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it was a bit underwhelming for Jalen, right?
- 21:25[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's some controversy throughout the season specifically from his dad tweeting.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think I think we all remember that, right, Mary?
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, stay off the internet parents.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a good spot for you.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, with Jalen right, you know, he's more of a scrapback.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's a speedback.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: He needs that crease to hit.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: He's not either between the tackles, power guy, you can create garbage on his home.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: He's not Devon HN.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's not Ollie Gordon.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: It felt like
- 22:01[SPEAKER_01]: Whenever they put him in, he was already set up for Philadelphia, at least that was my opinion on him.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, the offensive line wasn't doing him any favors.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_00]: There was multiple instances where he's getting contacted two yards deep into the backfield and asked to make a play with all of that going on, with all of the chaos behind the line of scrimmage.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: to to find success when that's going down on a majority of these attempts.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of times, he was brought into the game when you knew the dolphins were trying to run anyway.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: So not only does the defense know it's coming, but the offensive line can't do anything about it.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: And Jalen Wright, unfortunately suffered because of that.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: We're ready to get into this film.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: You're ready to watch some bulk.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm ready.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: I tried to jump the gun ten minutes ago, but I think we're good to go now.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: Before we do that, we are gonna go to ad-break.

- 25:43[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Merck, we are back.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: So now, we can actually go ahead and talk some balls.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_01]: We can take a look at the data that we just blurt it out, you know, for a bitch down, you know, and I hope you guys were able to retain this in your book.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: And now we can take a look at not just by yards loss, but what the running game and the plays what went wrong systematically.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: First play, we're going to go ahead and take a look at this was probably the single worst yardage play in the data and let's take a look at who the running back is and most of these these worst five worst plays we're going to show you.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think any of them have Devon
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: you know, there's offensive line.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: There's a reason why he got paid ladies and gentlemen.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go ahead, watch the play.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: They're in a heavy set with Daniel Brunsco as a six offensive line.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: They go ahead and motion in Julian Hill.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: Let me see how I'm able to potentially actually
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of want to lower the speed just a little bit so you everyone's able to see and it's not super duper fast.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, here we go.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins are pretty heavy along the line of skirmish, right?
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: Technically, Merrick, how many blockers do you have?
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: Looks like you got you.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: You're starting five.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: Plus you got two tight ends and you got an angled over there on the right side as well.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: So eight.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: You got eight blockers on your side.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_01]: You have the advantage of against a New England front that has one, two, three, four on the ladder skirmish and one, two, three, four at the second level.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: So let's go ahead and see what actually happens because this is the last game of this season, okay?
- 27:43[SPEAKER_01]: This is the last game of this season.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: This was second and ten and it went for negative nine yards.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: All right, he goes ahead and tries to motion in, Alec Engle tries to do a toss and Engle completely whiffs the block right here.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no chance, no chance.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right from the get go on that one, right from the get go and guess what the data says.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: This was against Aaron Brewer for the simple fact, Ali Gordon was still nearby the A-Gap.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_01]: Data-wise, this was the responsibility on Aaron Brewer, but what it doesn't take into account is the motion on this.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I don't have the time to track and chart every single play right now, but Kyle Krabs did.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: And he explains that sometimes because of the motion, it schemes off the run.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: It brings in defenders, it brings in blockers where
- 28:50[SPEAKER_01]: that dolphins offence the line or scope position players are not in position to make the block.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: Alec Englop was he in position to make the block?
- 28:58[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go ahead and see who's got the leverage here, Merit.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, you can see you can see the defender coming in from New England on the right side of the line there.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: He gets the hand off.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's pitched.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_01]: Alec and we have to not have the leverage and look at the offensive line from the starting to where the ball lands in Ali Gordon's hands, cool strange.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: He's only got one hand on the defensive line, man.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: Daniel Brunsky was trying to get up to the second level.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's got no one to block right now.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Borham, he's losing his battle.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: He does not have his two feet set.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Jonas Avenue, you can say he has his man.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: Aaron Bruir wins and he's getting right up to the second level.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: And then Alec Engold misses whiffs.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: If he had that made that block, maybe all in Gordon could have turned out one or two, but there's no winning against this player right here.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just, it's multiple failures on one play, which allow this to happen.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: If one guy is unable to do their job, you can get a talented back to overcome that.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_00]: But when you've got multiple positions, multiple spots on the line that are failing you, you know, you'd have to be superhuman to gain any yards on a play like this.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: Here, we'll head over to the very next play right here.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_01]: All right, this play was credited as a run to Greg Dulcice.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: This is at the goal line.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: This is a third and four in the Dolphins own end zone.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: Week 17 against the Tampa Bay Buck and Ears Quinoa versus starting.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_01]: Greg Dolcech, the Dolphins Titan, takes the snap basically on a swing screen, swing run pass right here.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's a design carry to the right side of the ball.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_01]: If we talk about Lyme in itself, Austin Jackson is responsible for the right hand side.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: Cedric Wilson, when he was in Lyme in 2022, he was a decent blocker.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_01]: But it begins as rushers, again, slime backers, not really.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: Cedric Wilson's assignment is any wide receiver right here that he can help out and chip into this run play.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_01]: He does not do that and that leaves Austin Jackson as the loan man to make his block as the loan guy to win the leverage.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm not I'm not seeing it on the screen here who's some that way we're supposed to along the New England play here.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: There we go.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: There we go.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: That's my apologies.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_01]: We have it now.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: So, now you're able to see the plane, okay?
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: You see where Sergeant Goulson is lined up.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: He's very close to the offensive line.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: He's inside the hashes right there.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_01]: The ball is also inside the hashes, but it's towards the left-hand side of the field.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_01]: You take a look, it looks like 11 personnel with two wide receivers and a tight end of on 18 as a running back.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: We're able to see, more so on the left hand side, there's more defenders compared to the right hand side.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: However, on the second level, you have more defenders, which is where you're gonna need help and support on the right hand side.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: We'll go ahead and run the play.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Devon HN is motioning out so that way you have an equal amount of defenders on both left and right hand side.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right, the play goes, what do we say about Cedric Wilson's assignment?
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: He's supposed to chip the wide and wide edged rusher right that it which is, I think he a son, redic or a yada, deabi.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is a son, redic number five, right here.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't chip him, he doesn't get the leverage.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think Austin Jackson has enough space to make that block?
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, not looking like it.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: And oh, just like that, just like that.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: See how easy it is for a play to fail if your skill position players are not doing their job and your offensive line is not put in the right situation.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: Was this the right play call on third and four at the end zone arguably and I can make a very good argument.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't think this was a correct play call.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_00]: Do I put this up against Austin Jackson?
- 33:43[SPEAKER_01]: No, not really.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of fault the play call and said Rick Wilson not making his block right here.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean, just by the personnel on the field at week 17, second to last game, everybody's hurt.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: No tool on the field.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_00]: You got said you're Wilson out there.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then the screen goes to Dolcech.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, if you're trying to win football games, this is probably not the best way to go about it.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, no.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: Here we go.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_01]: We are gonna head over to the third plate right here.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: This is where Allie Gordon runs for negative four yards on a third and one.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: This is the second quarter.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins are at, I want to say the 25 or 30 yard line right here.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, they're at the 33 yard line right here.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_01]: 00 in the second quarter.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins are potentially in position to score a field goal or a touchdown.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: Once again, this is a third and one.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: You should be able to convert a third and one right here.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, you're gonna see Joseph and I are right here.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: I love card.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_01]: Not sure if you guys remember the play from this game, my images needed one yard right here.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: Technically, this is a power plate.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_01]: All you go on is supposed to run right behind Jonas Avaniah right here off the power concept.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_01]: Jonas Avaniah's assignment right here is the three technique right here.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, just that's shaded right over his,
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: left shoulder.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_01]: He's able to fire off the line, but his pad level is a bit too high and we'll go ahead and run the play.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_01]: Let me make sure this is, uh, yeah, the speed is correct.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: Here we go.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: You can see Jonas Avanaya is not the low man and technically neither is Patrick Paul.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: Aaron Brewer is lower
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: The whole strange is not.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_01]: So you have one, two, three guys who do not have the low man leverage.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: And what's the saying, Mary, do you tell me who's something?
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: The low man always wins, that there it is.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: The low man always wins.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: And technically what this play and what this play suppose to do is
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: Ali Gordon supports it just run straight up right up the middle in power.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's supposed to get a hole open up so that way you can get one yard.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: That does not happen.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_01]: Instead, because Patrick Paul has to help out Jonah Savanaya, Aaron Brewer has to help out Cole Strange right here.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't happen and it leaves these edges, these gaps for the linebackers to blitz freely
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_00]: See again, no chance.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: No chance right here.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: All right, this has opened, this has opened right here.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: He has nowhere to go up the middle.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_01]: This defender is coming in, Patrick Queen is coming in, Ollie Gordon is trying to cut back and doesn't get anything wrapped up immediately.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like this is the play right here that defines what went wrong with the Miami Dolphins offense.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_01]: So interior offense align in 2025.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean, look where they're at on the field here.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: This hurts field goal positioning.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: This also takes you out of an opportunity to possibly go forward on fourth down if you want to.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 37:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you can't lose four yards on a third and one when you're near the red zone.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't quite in the red zone there, but they were near the red zone.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: You just, you have no options at that point.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: Now you settle for a long field goal attempt.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, well, I went to a third, fourth and five after that play.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_01]: All right, fourth worst play, week 11 against Washington, all the going goes back by negative two yards.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: And if you remember, this is a fourth and one.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins have Dan Brunskill here in as their sixth offensive line.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_01]: Usually they were successful with the sixth offensive
- 38:14[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll go ahead and run the play and we'll analyze it right here.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_01]: All right, you have Nick Westbrook Akini motioning in.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_01]: And then emotions right back out because they're trying to make sure everyone is set on the play, refs are getting a little bit involved.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_01]: But you see where the leverages on the offensive line and defensive line.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_01]: You have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 people on the offensive line, Alec Engel, as you're seven to blocker, the Commanders have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6 players on the line of Scrimmage.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: Nick Westbrook of Keene motions inside.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_01]: He stacked a little bit right next to Patrick Paul inside the hashes.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: That gives you eight people on the line of Scrimmage.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: Clearly, the leverage is there.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I like angled motions, snaps the ball, filled fourth down conversion.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and look at all those commanders right there.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_00]: Look at all of them just in the back field.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: Once again, not a chance, not a chance.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, all right, here we go.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_01]: All right, play is getting set up.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_01]: We'll take a look at the end zone angle and I feel like we'll get a phenomenal angle right here.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_01]: Again, Nick was Brooke McKinney, motioning inside the hashes, and motion ball is now.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I wanna show you guys with the motion where Alec Engled went inside.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: Number 25 right here, also motion as well to get leverage inside to make sure no one else gets in there.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: not necessarily a clear picture of who's winning the leverage battle, but you can tell right off the bat, the entire dolphin's offensive line is already sinking in motion, and they're shifting towards the left hand side.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_01]: All right, here we go.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, no one has gotten through.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_01]: Patrick Paul looks to help out Jonas Avenue right there.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, not Patrick Paul.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_01]: His match of helps out cold strange right on the right hand side.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_01]: He's climbing up to the second level.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Borham, one on one, Dan Brunskill, does now win his leverage right here.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_01]: Up against number 94, Doran Payne.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: Alec Engold, he's in position to win his leverage against number 98 right here.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_01]: And look at cold strange.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_01]: He's already getting pushed back right here.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: Not sure if you're able to see clearly, but he's a yard already from number 97, from Javan Hargrave.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: Hargrave runs the swim move on strange.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: Strange has his feet sideways instead of straight.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: He's already losing the leverage.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: Number 99 right here on Washington, who's going up against Jonas Ivana.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_01]: Ivana is also pushed back by a yard.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_01]: And the pocket and the run
- 41:34[SPEAKER_00]: nothing.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing he can do.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: That play was doomed from the start.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Error Brewer does what he has to do to help out.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_01]: cool strange, but strange does not do his job properly.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_01]: He helped to drive the nose tackle, but the nose, but cool strange did not get into a proper lever.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: The nose tackle was able to hold the line of scrimmage, but then he uses the swim move and then the pocket is also collapsing because if he take a look on the right hand side one more time, Dan Brunskill loses.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: Dan Bronnski also loses his leverage.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: So you got one, two, three.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: You have Larry Borham, Cole Strange, Dan Bronnskial.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_01]: Completely losing their leverage.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: One second into the play, and all they were in as well.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that's a, that's a tough defensive line to be going against, you know, a lot of really, really solid really quality players there, but still you have to do better than that in this type of situation and this correct me, if I'm wrong, but this was a close game between the dolphins in the command of this, this could have changed the outcome of of the game.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, it, it honestly could have and I do think, I think the dolphins, yeah, this was fourth quarter.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_01]: with the minute and 44 seconds left.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think the dolphins, I gotta take a look back again, and I don't remember, right?
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they won that game, did they?
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't believe so.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't think they won that game.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, they did win the game.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, they won the game, they won 16 at 13.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: Over time, right, over time in Madrid as well.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's right in Madrid.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, they could have kept it all right here.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: They could have won the game right here.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I remember that one being a tight one in the end, and I think wasn't there a defense of play by Jack Jones that sealed it?
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think he picked off and they had to feel good to win the game.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it was a, it was a hairy one.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_00]: They could have closed it out in regulation, but they ended up, you know, as they often do, making us sweat it out.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, hopefully they don't have too many sweat-and-out games, uh, as otherwise it's it's gonna get very, very, very, very fast.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: All right, last play, we'll go ahead and it is a run with Devon HN here.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, first and 10, week 10, up against Buffalo, Devon HN is going on a right tackle run.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_01]: You have Dan Brunskill helping out Larry Borham and
- 44:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you this, Dan and Brunskill primarily was on the right side of the offensive line because Colestrange and Larry Borem could not block on the right side for anything, and I'll tell you that, for sure.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_01]: So in this play, we got Joey Bosa right here, who takes down Devon Hane for a four yard loss.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_01]: So you have leverage by three people, three offensive linemen up against number 96, Joey
- 44:55[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, anderson, I'm not too familiar.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_01]: But then you, with the motion right here, where Alec Indo Engold goes inside, you get number 27 tra-davius white, I believe, who's that player tra-davius white also motions in to make it four people on the right hand side.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_01]: So, you have one thing going up against you.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_01]: The motion where Alec Engold from there, brings in an extra blocker.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, he does, but Joey Bosa comes clean.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely clean right here.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: Let's take a look.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he swims across Dan Brunskill.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: Brunskill does not get his man.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Borham now has to pick up Joey Bosa.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: We go ahead slow it down, pause, whoop.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's like Joey Bosa just teleports.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: And Dan Brunskill and Larry Borham aren't even paying attention.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_01]: He comes unblocked for yards.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: Dunzo, yeah, you get nothing there.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely nothing there.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then guess what else happens?
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: Cold strange gets beat.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_01]: Jonas survived Nile also gets beat.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: So A chain had nowhere to cut back, even if he had space to cut back.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you look at the rest of that play over there, especially with what Engel did, if Boram is able to not let Bosa cross his face like that, that's a gain right there.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's a solid gain for A-chan and who knows, he makes a couple guys miss it could have been a house call.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_00]: As it was, the dolphins did win this game as well, so we're finishing up on somewhat of a positive note here, 30 to 30 times.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely would have been, but these are these are the margins in the NFL.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_00]: These are the margins, you know, and maybe the Dolphins won that game, but there were plenty more other examples throughout the season where the offensive line failed, which caused the running back to fail, which caused the offense to fail, Mike McDaniel couldn't scheme around it, and this team couldn't overcome with everything that they they faced last year with injuries to
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: they were not able to overcome all of the negative plays that they incurred throughout the season and you saw five examples there and those are the types of things that will need to be better from both the offensive line and the running backs and the play called a play design.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_00]: If this team is to find success in this upcoming season as a team that's going to be focusing on
- 47:30[SPEAKER_00]: The run game focusing on imposing their will against opposing defenses.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: They are going to need better play from everyone all around and it starts up front with that offensive line Yeah, and Now we have to think about this forward Right everything we just went through the 91 plays the Lyman now being accountable the five worst plays in 2025 Not what's being done about 2026, Merrick
- 47:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, first things first is you, you, Jonas of I9 to the right side, you draft Cate and Proctor to slot in at left guard, Cole Strange, like we mentioned, off to LA.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_00]: So already more investments in an offensive line that outside of Aaron Brewer, who was just a second team all pro and just got the bag, is made up of nothing but first and second rounders at the position, Patrick Paul second rounder, Cate and Proctor first rounder.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_00]: uh... Jonas of i9 a second rounder in in Austin Jackson was a was a first rounder in twenty twenty you know the same year they they they drafted to a tongue of i love so you have investments in this offensive line between money and draft picks it's time for them to show up time for them to play well
- 48:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think with the combination of Kate and Proctor and with Bobby Sloaks scheme, I think we'll see a little bit more powerful schemes with how big Kate and Proctor is, right?
- 48:50[SPEAKER_01]: He can squat 850 pounds, 530,000 defense press, 32 and a half inch vertical at 352 pounds.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that is an enormous
- 49:00[SPEAKER_01]: left-hand side.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think Aaron Brewer will have to worry.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully he does not have to worry about the left-hand side.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the play design changes a little bit to where instead of Jonah survive, not on the left side, you have Caden Proctor where Aaron Brewer doesn't have to focus on the back side three technique.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_01]: The combo responsibility shifts, right?
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then when
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: Bobby Slowick is going to do it a little bit on the outside, more so towards the left hand side, right?
- 49:34[SPEAKER_01]: The plays where Patrick Paul was responsible on the left side if he has help with catering proctor, you know, those two massive mountain of human beings.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_01]: They should be able to get their hands on, they should be able to have their leverage.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: Bobby Slavic's quote quote from a practice in OTs, right?
- 49:53[SPEAKER_01]: He said this himself, word for word.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_01]: Patch Paul and Cadenproctor clearing lanes for Ollie Gordon on consecutive planes.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to try and see that in training camp, which kicks off on August 1st.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: So it's coming up.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_00]: it is coming up.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_00]: So I think you also got to kind of look at that right side.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_00]: And one of the major things that could help this offensive line and fingers and toes crossed on this one, it hasn't happened recently, but they need Austin Jackson to stay healthy, right?
- 50:26[SPEAKER_00]: Larry Borms gone.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's not here anymore.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's not with the Miami Dolphins.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_00]: Austin Jackson's back from injury for how long.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_00]: we don't know.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, your guess is as good as mine on that one.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think anyone can predict that.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_00]: But again, we keep going back to it.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_00]: Join us via Naya now on the right side.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_00]: If he can if he can play like the player, the dolphins thought they were getting when they traded up to get him in the second round, uh, you know, not this past draft, but the the year before.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_00]: And Austin Jackson can pull a rabbit out of the hat and stay healthy for the entirety of the season.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to see a lot better play from the right side of this offensive line.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, they also drafted a backup guard in DJ Campbell as well.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_01]: He primarily also played, I believe on the right hand side too, so you can slot in from their if Jonas of I night goes down or Austin Jackson goes down and they have to do a backup swing tackle situation where DJ Campbell plays on the left side, seven eyes stays on the right hand side and
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: Cainer Proctor goes towards the right tackle so that way at least the ends are covered.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_01]: So they have a little bit of flexibility, a little bit of swings there as well.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_01]: DJ Campbell as you know, primarily a guard guy, very, very powerful guy.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_01]: So if they wanted to on the left hand side run a bit more power, more inside, they have some flexibility where DJ Campbell is a big and heavy guy.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_01]: But I think we're missing the biggest thing here, Merrick.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_01]: We have to talk about the passing game, the play action leverage, which this scheme has.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_01]: They don't have to atunga by a lower anymore.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it goes to an income's maliquillus, and you couldn't be talking about two players who are any more different than to a and Malik, you know, and I mean, obviously to a chunk of a lower, wasn't a mobile guy.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I'm breaking any news there, you know?
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: Every time to a tucked to the ball and ran, we all held our collective breath.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't something you wanted to see, you know, as such, he wasn't an effective runner, but you get Malik Willis in there and the threat of his legs alone should help this entire offense should help the Russian rushing average as well when he does have some design runs and when he just takes off and makes things happen.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: So Malik Willis,
- 52:51[SPEAKER_00]: becoming the leader of this offense and the guy who who is is in charge of moving the change for the Miami Dolphins, I think that's going to help the team overall as a whole, but I think it's going to greatly help this running game and they're not going to be able to
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, with Malik Willis's legs as a threat, right?
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: It is a little bit scary.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_01]: We know Malik Willis can handle the ball, can run the ball, he did a lot at Liberty when things were going wrong.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't asked to do it a lie in Green Bay because Green Bay had a pretty good offensive line and a really good running back.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully that offensive line is the same like mine as this year, which would be a phenomenal situation.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_01]: uh, in the run game and Devon HN, at least in the run game.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we should be stop watching the yards for carry for Devon HN.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think we know that, you know, he can get, done, he can get stuff done in the run game.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's how much they can decrease those negatives to zero yards.
- 53:59[SPEAKER_01]: to be put in situations where they can be successful where instead of them being behind the sticks, they're able to get ahead of the sticks.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_01]: They're gaining five to six yards on first down.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_01]: They're able to convert on second downs where they're not in a lot of third and short situations where it's like, okay, this can go one of two ways.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_01]: And hopefully, I mean, Merrick,
- 54:24[SPEAKER_01]: The offense should be a different operation compared to Mike McDaniels.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_00]: yeah it should look a lot different if it doesn't look a lot different we've got some bigger problems considering we just revamped the entire team the entire coaching staff and and the guy picking the groceries as well in John Eric Sullivan so uh you don't like you said if you could take that that number of zero or negative yard runs from 91 and you can decrease it by even as much as 40 percent you know
- 54:56[SPEAKER_00]: And that's through the addition of Malik Willis along with reinforcements to that offensive line.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_00]: If you can get that closer to maybe 50 runs that are 0 or negative yards, I think this is going to be a better looking offense.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_00]: At least in that regard.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now is it going to translate to wins probably not this defense isn't going to be too helpful this upcoming season, at least if you're going by what the experts are saying heading into the year.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a difficult year for the Miami Dolphins.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a difficult year for us as fans.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_00]: But you've got to be looking at the smaller things, the details, right?
- 55:33[SPEAKER_00]: Not just the overall picture, did we win games that we make the playoffs?
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: Is there development?
- 55:38[SPEAKER_00]: Are we seeing players step it up?
- 55:41[SPEAKER_00]: Is there a foundation that can be built this year that they can build on next off season when they have some cap space, when they have some money to spend?
- 55:49[SPEAKER_00]: and they have additional draft picks.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think, you know, this year will be a struggle next year.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you see them competing for one of those wild card spots.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_00]: But I think in year three, if all goes right, you should be seeing the Miami Dolphins back in contention for the AFCE title.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully winning a playoff game for the first time in well over a quarter century at this point.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm 26.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_01]: The last time the Miami Dolphins won a playoff game was 25
- 56:17[SPEAKER_01]: when the dolphins are doing well and they're in the playoffs, they have a really, really good run game.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_01]: And again, if the dolphins can lay the foundation and if they can improve, it's most likely because of what we talked about today.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_01]: So this is going to be important to track throughout the season.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_01]: So hoping instead of 91 negative runs to zero runs, it's like 40 to 50.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_01]: That would be a major improvement for the Miami Dolphins, but as always, there are other factors to consider.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_01]: Stick with us here on Scouting Defense, right here on the 3x Preparary podcast network, also part of the five reasons sports network, as always, y'all, fins up.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_01]: Peace.
