Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now let's get de Vincent mcavinie in the UK for us,
- 0:02Speaker 1: then some good morning, good morning. Now over in the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ival Office, we've heard Mertz meeting with Trump. Did anything
- 0:08Speaker 1: come of the meeting?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yes, Fredrich Mertz, the new Chancellor of Germany, made that
- 0:14Speaker 2: path that some leaders have fallen down on to the
- 0:17Speaker 2: Oval Office in recent months. It seems to have gone
- 0:21Speaker 2: off the public side pretty much without a hitch. He
- 0:23Speaker 2: presented Donald Trump with a gift, which was his German
- 0:27Speaker 2: grandfather's original birth certificate, which seemed to go down quite
- 0:30Speaker 2: well with the President. When it came to their meeting.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I mean, we were told that he had sort of
- 0:36Speaker 2: gamed out scenarios. He would have likely have talked to
- 0:39Speaker 2: Mark Carney and Keir Starmer, the Canadian and British prime
- 0:41Speaker 2: ministers who had successful visits, not so much the South
- 0:45Speaker 2: African president, and of course Vladimir Zelenski. The questions, though,
- 0:49Speaker 2: seem to have highlighted some of the rift, particularly when
- 0:52Speaker 2: it comes to Ukraine. Germany a big support of Ukraine.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It's thought, with some strategic ambiguity at the moment they
- 0:59Speaker 2: won't confirm this. Germany has given permission to Ukraine to
- 1:03Speaker 2: use long range missiles that they're provising to strike further
- 1:06Speaker 2: into Russia. But Donald Trump is essentially saying, you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's like he's compared in this meeting to two children
- 1:13Speaker 2: fighting in a park. He had a two hour long
- 1:15Speaker 2: conversation with Vladimir Putin and he said that you've got
- 1:19Speaker 2: to let them fight for a while, and he thinks
- 1:21Speaker 2: he knows when will be the right moment to step in,
- 1:23Speaker 2: but won't say what that is. So they're now meeting
- 1:25Speaker 2: behind closed doors. Of course, Germany trying to get a
- 1:28Speaker 2: deal like the UK has to get out of these tariffs.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Their manufacturing industry hit very hard. But they are just
- 1:35Speaker 2: part of the EU when it comes to that, so
- 1:37Speaker 2: they're part of a kind of multi pronged approach.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Interesting and Vincent well have today. That's Vincent Mecha any
