- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean.
- 0:13Here it is, Monday. It's the 11th of the 11th.
- 0:18And if it's 11:00, you should press pause and have a minute of
- 0:21silence because today is Remembrance Day, the 11th of
- 0:23November, where we remember the sacrifice of all those men and
- 0:27women who went out there and fought for our freedom so that
- 0:31we can enjoy our lives, feel free to pursue the things that
- 0:36our heart leads us to. What an amazing thing.
- 0:39Yes, that is today, 11:00. I will be at the Cenotaph in
- 0:43Hobart leading the service there as chaplain.
- 0:46What an honour for me. But it is not 11:00 right now.
- 0:51So we are going to talk through, read through this chapter.
- 0:55And this chapter is a tricky one, one that people find a bit
- 0:59tricky because it's the first time in the New Testament when
- 1:03God strikes people down dead and it feels very Old Testament.
- 1:08But as this new church begins to grow, God wants them to be very
- 1:12clear that the God that they worship is not some impotent
- 1:18idol that is being worshipped or some made up God.
- 1:21No, this is the living God, the God of the people of Israel who
- 1:25took them out of the land of Egypt and indeed raised Jesus
- 1:30from the dead. So that is why God shows his
- 1:34power in this way. And one thing that I'm sure that
- 1:36you may have picked up about God is that he does not deal well
- 1:40with hypocrisy. So let us read this chapter
- 1:44together. Acts chapter 5.
- 1:57But there was a certain man named Ananias who with his wife
- 2:01Sapphira, sold some property. He brought part of the money to
- 2:05the apostles, claiming it was the full amount.
- 2:08With his wife's consent, he kept the rest.
- 2:12Then Peter said, Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your
- 2:17heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit and
- 2:21you kept some money for yourself.
- 2:23The property was yours to sell or not sell as you wished, and
- 2:27after selling it, the money was also yours to give away.
- 2:30How could you do a thing like this?
- 2:33You weren't lying to us, but to God.
- 2:37As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and
- 2:41died. Everyone who heard about it was
- 2:43terrified. Then some young men got up,
- 2:46wrapped him in a sheet and took him out and buried him.
- 2:50About 3 hours later, his wife came in.
- 2:53Not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, Was this the
- 2:57price you and your husband received for your land?
- 3:00Yes, she replied. That was the price, and Peter
- 3:04said, how could the two of you even think of conspiring to test
- 3:09the spirit of the Lord like this?
- 3:11The young men who buried your husband are just outside the
- 3:14door, and they will carry you out too.
- 3:17Instantly she fell to the floor and died.
- 3:21When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they
- 3:24carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
- 3:27Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else.
- 3:31They heard about what had happened.
- 3:34The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and
- 3:37wonders among the people, and all the believers were meeting
- 3:40regularly at the temple in the area known as Solomon's
- 3:44Colonnade, but no one else dared to join them.
- 3:47Even though all the people had a high regard for them, yet more
- 3:51and more people believed and were brought to the Lord.
- 3:55Crowds of both men and women. As a result of the apostles
- 3:59work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and
- 4:02mats so that Peter's shadow might fall across some of them
- 4:06as he went by. Crowds came from the villages
- 4:09around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil
- 4:13spirits, and they were all healed.
- 4:17The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees,
- 4:20were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and
- 4:24put them in the public gaol. But an Angel of the Lord came at
- 4:27night, opened the gates of the gaol and brought them out.
- 4:31Then he told them, Go to the temple and give the people this
- 4:36message of life. So at Daybreak the apostles
- 4:39entered the temple, as they were told, and immediately began
- 4:42teaching. When the high priest and his
- 4:45officials arrived, they convened the High Council, the full
- 4:49assembly of the elders of Israel.
- 4:51Then they sent to the apostles to be brought from the gaol for
- 4:54trial. But when the temple guards went
- 4:57to the gaol, the men were gone. So they returned to the council
- 5:01and reported it. The gaol was securely locked,
- 5:05with the guards standing outside, but when we opened the
- 5:07gates, no one was there. When the captain of the temple
- 5:11guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed,
- 5:15wondering where it would all end.
- 5:18Then someone arrived with startling news.
- 5:21The men you put in gaol are standing in the temple teaching
- 5:25the people. The captain went with his temple
- 5:28guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence,
- 5:32for they were afraid the people would stone them.
- 5:35Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where
- 5:39the high priest confronted them. We gave you strict orders, never
- 5:44again to teach in this man's name, he said.
- 5:48Instead you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching
- 5:52about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death.
- 5:57But Peter and the apostles replied, we must obey God rather
- 6:02than any human authority. The God of our ancestors raised
- 6:06Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a
- 6:09cross. Then God put him in the place of
- 6:13honour at his right hand as Prince and Saviour.
- 6:17He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their
- 6:20sins and be forgiven. We are witnesses of these
- 6:24things, and so was the Holy Spirit who is given by God to
- 6:28those who obey Him. When they heard this, the High
- 6:32Council was furious and decided to kill them.
- 6:36But one member, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert in
- 6:40religious law and respected by all the people, stood up and
- 6:44ordered that the men be sent outside the council chamber for
- 6:47a while. Then he said to his colleagues,
- 6:50Men of Israel, take care what you are planning to do with
- 6:55these men. Some time ago there was that
- 6:59fellow Theodus, who pretended to be someone great.
- 7:03About 400 others joined him, but he was killed and all his
- 7:08followers went their various ways.
- 7:10The whole movement came to nothing after him.
- 7:14At the time of the census there was Judas of Galilee.
- 7:18He got people to follow him, but he was killed too, and all his
- 7:22followers were scattered. So my advice is, leave these men
- 7:27alone. Let them go.
- 7:30If they are planning and doing these things merely on their
- 7:33own, it will soon be overthrown. But if it is from God, you will
- 7:38not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves
- 7:42fighting against God. The others accepted his advice.
- 7:48They called in the apostles and had them flogged.
- 7:50Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of
- 7:53Jesus, and they let them go. The apostles left the high
- 7:58Council, rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer
- 8:02disgrace for the name of Jesus. And every day in the temple and
- 8:07from house to house, they continued to teach and preach
- 8:11this message. Jesus is the Messiah.
- 8:26Well, Jesus, following that logic, here we are 2000 years
- 8:30on, I think it's fair to say you are no passing fad.
- 8:34You are the Son of the living God.
- 8:36You are the Messiah. You are our Saviour and we
- 8:42worship you here in this modern world, 2000 years after those
- 8:48apostles first started spreading the word.
- 8:51Our Lord, your church stretches from horizon to horizon.
- 8:55Your love and Your grace fill the earth, and we just want to
- 9:00tell the world about it. Thank you for that incredible
- 9:05gift you give us that you have given countless generations of
- 9:08people through the ages. And here we are, Your beloved
- 9:13children, living in your fatherly and loving embrace.
- 9:18We love you, our Father. We are grateful for you and we
- 9:22praise you all in the loving name of Jesus, Amen.
