- 0:07The Los Angeles Dodgers faced the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park for Game 1 of a tiebreaker for the National League pennant on October 1, 1962.
- 0:17The Dodgers and Giants entered the regular season with 101 and 61 record tied for first place in the National League.
- 0:24The league decided to schedule a best of three tiebreaker series to determine which team would advance to the World Series against the Yankees.
- 0:31The Dodgers were managed by Walt Alston in his ninth season with the franchise.
- 0:35He would send Sandy Kofax to the mound to meet the Giants Billy Pierce, who had won 16 games for San Francisco in the regular season, under manager Alvin Dark.
- 0:43This audio recording is from the NBC Radio broadcast featuring alters George Kell and Al Helfer.
- 1:13The Dodgers played the game for the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:23The Dodgers played the game for the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:33The first pitch of the game was the playoff between the San Francisco Giants and the Visting Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:45The fourth playoff in the history of Major League Baseball was only one in the American League Baseball.
- 1:53That was back in 1948.
- 1:57But here, history is being made in San Francisco. Stumping out to the mound now is the little left hander Billy Pierce.
- 2:04Will set the San Francisco Ball Club for you defensively.
- 2:08Orlando Cepeda is at first base. At second base, Chuck Hiller.
- 2:14At shortstop, the very dependable Jose Pagán, who has certainly been the glue on the infield this year for the San Francisco Giants.
- 2:23At third base, a fine competitor Jim Davenport.
- 2:27Out on the left field is Harvey King. The center fielder, and need we say more, will say hey kid himself, Willie Mays.
- 2:35In right field, despite the fact he has an ailing elbow, Billy Alou.
- 2:39Behind the plate, a man who hit a home run here yesterday to help his ball club to a 2-1 victory over the Colt 45s at Bailey.
- 2:48Out of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. On the mound from Detroit, Michigan, left hander Billy Pierce.
- 2:54And the first man to step up to the plate here for the LA Dodgers will be there, scat back on the infield, so to speak.
- 3:01Shortstop, Mari Will, who has stolen 100 bases this year.
- 3:06I think earlier, if you were with us, and you heard Bob Wolfe mention the fact that the Los Angeles Dodgers have plenty of speed,
- 3:15that has been their port this year, particularly with the guys coming up to the plate right now.
- 3:21Their off field has been a speedy outfield where, on the other side of the fence, the San Francisco Giants have relied a great deal on power hitting
- 3:29to get the runs across that they have needed this year.
- 3:33Once again, let us remind you that Billy Pierce, who is getting ready to make his first pitch here,
- 3:38has won 15 ball games this year in the National League and has lost 6.
- 3:43One win and one loss with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 3:47And he's making his third start against Los Angeles.
- 3:50He beat them on August 11th in San Francisco here, 5-4.
- 3:54And he lost to the Dodgers on September 4th, 5-4, ironically enough, in Los Angeles.
- 4:00He has worked briefly in relief against the Dodgers for a total of 3 innings, and he gave up 3 hits and fan 3.
- 4:07This first start, since he beat the Cardinals right here in this ball field on September 26th.
- 4:12And now we're ready for the first pitch.
- 4:14Bailey signs for it.
- 4:16Pierce cuts it loose.
- 4:17Curveball in there for the strike.
- 4:20So everybody, this ball game is on the fire.
- 4:23Right ball A-B is coaching in first place for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 4:27Down with third, Leo de Rocher.
- 4:30Murray Wills, the right hand hitter, leans over the plate, chokes up on the handle.
- 4:33The pitch to him is a fast ball, and that's outside.
- 4:35One ball and one strike, the count on Murray Wills.
- 4:38And Bailey, the catcher calls for time and walks out in front of the plate.
- 4:42He wants to say something to his battery mate, Billy Pierce.
- 4:46They meet halfway between home plate and pitchers' mouth.
- 4:49In case you hooked up with us late, it's the San Francisco Giants playing host to the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 4:57in the playoff games that will determine who will represent the National League against the New York Yankees
- 5:04in the World Series, which begins on Thursday and will be broadcast right over the NBC network.
- 5:10Now the pitch to the plate.
- 5:12Down it comes a curveball, in there for the strike.
- 5:15One ball, just right count on Murray Wills.
- 5:18He'll be followed by second baseman Jim Gilliam, and then we'll have left fielder Tommy Davis.
- 5:23The outfield for Murray Wills has fanned slightly to left.
- 5:27The hole in the outfield is in right center.
- 5:32Pierce is ready, comes down with the next pitch, a change up that's inside over the shoe tops.
- 5:37Two balls, two strikes.
- 5:39This is a symmetrical ballpark at Candlestick in San Francisco, 330 down the lines, 375 to the right field sector,
- 5:48365 to the left field sector, 410 straight away center field to the fences.
- 5:53Curveball in off the fish to Murray Wills. That jumps his count to three and two.
- 5:58Murray Wills hitting a 299, has six home runs and 48 runs driven in.
- 6:09Stands just off the plate when he's feet pretty much together, sort of bends at the knees.
- 6:14The fidgety with that bat keeps pumping it back and forth.
- 6:17The three, two pitch to one.
- 6:18Fastball, swung on the field, foul into the stands.
- 6:21All the count is three balls and two strikes.
- 6:30Left-hander, Billy Pierce began his professional baseball career back in 1945 with Buffalo, the International League.
- 6:40Got into 15 games that year, had an under-run average of 5.42 for his first year.
- 6:46This year in this league, he is 3.71. The pitch is swung on, there's a looper, a shortstop.
- 6:51McGahn has the reins and has the ball.
- 6:57Don Murray Wills pops up with opposing shortstop for the first stop here in the top half of the first inning.
- 7:03The batter coming up now, also a switch hitter is Jim Gilliam.
- 7:07He'll be batting right-handed against the bully pairs.
- 7:10Jim Gilliam this year for the regular season hit 2.76 with four home runs and 43 runs driven in.
- 7:17He's played at second base and at third base for Los Angeles.
- 7:24Feet wide spread apart, works up on the handle of the bat.
- 7:28Billy Pierce taking his side off Mith Bailey, starts his pumping motion, then rides a pitch, soft curveball, is high on outside.
- 7:36So the count on Gilliam is one ball and no strikes.
- 7:39Jim Davenport has shadowed up at third base. Gilliam has always a threat to drop the button try to get on.
- 7:46A deal pangs straight away.
- 7:48Pierce's fastball is slugged foul off the first base side, there goes Spada over near the stands.
- 7:53He might have room for this. On the drive he makes the pass.
- 8:00Two up, two down in the top half of the first inning.
- 8:03Now this is the first playoff game of 1962.
- 8:10Here is the big gun for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tommy Davis.
- 8:15He leads the league with a percentage of 347. He leads the league in hits 227.
- 8:22He leads in RBIs with 150. He certainly has been the meal ticket for the Dodgers this year.
- 8:30He's a hand hitter standing just off the plate, feet pretty much together.
- 8:33Takes a look at the fastball and is in there for the strike.
- 8:38This guy Pierce can pull the string pretty well.
- 8:41As many of the pundits who played against him over in the American League can tell you,
- 8:46Pierce was with the Chicago White Sox for a long, long time.
- 8:50Fastball is one of them.
- 8:55Pierce had one right in off the fists.
- 8:57Tommy Davis was after it. We're in the top half of the first inning here,
- 9:01Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The bases are empty. There are two outs.
- 9:05There is no score.
- 9:09Pierce out on the mound getting a sign from his battery mate Bailey.
- 9:12Delivers the plate. Fastball outside. That's about shoulder high.
- 9:16One ball, two strike count on Tommy Davis. Should he get on,
- 9:20he'll be followed by the great big guy Frank Howard.
- 9:28Pierce is all set now.
- 9:31So is Tommy Davis.
- 9:34Pierce after having asked for a new set of signs, delivers, and his pitch is outside.
- 9:39That's ball two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 9:42Now out in center field, Willie Mays has moved a few steps over in the left center.
- 9:48He's giving Tommy Davis the alley in right center.
- 9:51375 feet up the alley in right center.
- 9:56You've heard a lot about the San Francisco wins at Candlestick Park?
- 10:00Not today.
- 10:03Thomas can be. The pitch has swung on and bowed back into the screen.
- 10:09God rides along on Tommy Davis. Two balls and two strikes.
- 10:15Pierce down to visit the Rosenberg.
- 10:18Davis taking a gander around at Leo de Rocha coaching at third base.
- 10:23Greg Malavi is coaching at first.
- 10:25Walter Austin runs his ball club from LeVenge as does Alvin Duck.
- 10:29Now the 2-2 pitch with two outs.
- 10:31Fastball swung on and popped up back to the first base.
- 10:34Salvedi's going over but Hiller cuts in behind him and calls for a fix.
- 10:40So that's all for Tommy Davis. The second baseman, Chuck Hiller, for the third out.
- 10:45Nothing across here in the top half for first inning.
- 10:48And again, off half an inning, it's the Dodgers nothing and the Giants now coming back.
- 10:53Now to the NBC Newsroom and Ed Arno.
- 10:57We interrupt the ball game for this bulletin from NBC News.
- 11:01An NAACP attorney in New Orleans has been quoted as saying,
- 11:05when Negro, a girl, is in the process of applying for entrance to the University of Mississippi,
- 11:11NBC News will interrupt the game for all important bulletins.
- 11:14Now back to Candlestick Park.
- 11:18Now we will belong into the last half of any number one of the squad's ball game
- 11:22and the San Francisco Giants. Now we'll have their first whack at it.
- 11:25They'll be facing Sandy Kofax.
- 11:29Sandy Kofax is taking them out and will set the ball club defensively behind him.
- 11:32At first base will be Lee Walls. At second base, Jim Gilliam.
- 11:36The shortstop will be Maury-Wills.
- 11:38And at third base is Andy Kerry.
- 11:41Out in left field will be Tommy Davis.
- 11:43The centerfielder is Willie Davis.
- 11:45And in right field, big Frank Howard.
- 11:47Behind the plate, Johnny Rosefield.
- 11:50And on the mound will be Sandy Kofax, who began with the Brooklyn Dodgers back in 1955.
- 11:56As a bonus, baby.
- 11:58And in seven years, in the Major League, Sandy Kofax has won 54 ball games
- 12:05and has lost 53. That was up until this year.
- 12:09And Sandy this year is 14-6. He's 2-0 with the Giants and has picked 1-0 hitters.
- 12:16Arviquin coming up to the plate now to be the first classman to face Sandy Kofax.
- 12:20Arviquin, batting at 3-0-7, has 10 home runs and 67 runs driven in.
- 12:26Arviquin is a right-hand hitter, holds a bat way down to the lob and stands deep in the plate.
- 12:30Sandy Kofax is ready. Rocks back, kicks high and delivers.
- 12:35The pass ball forward, throw at the waist for a strike.
- 12:39No ball, one strike count on Arviquin. Chuck Hiller to follow.
- 12:42And then we'll have Philly Pallou.
- 12:45The outfield for Arviquin, pushed around to the right side.
- 12:48He's after the next pitch and on the check swing, taps the ball foul down the right side.
- 12:54No ball, two strikes count now on Arviquin.
- 12:59Kofax gets a new ball to work with.
- 13:02The coach is operating here this afternoon for San Francisco, Whitey Lockman at third base, west-westerm as the coach at first.
- 13:09Kofax delivers 0-2, a soft curve ball is swung on and popped out into right field coming on as Frank Howard, he should have it.
- 13:16He does have it and there's the first stop.
- 13:19No ball, one away here in the last half of the first inning and that brings up Chuck Hiller.
- 13:25Hiller for the season left hand hitter batting at 275.
- 13:29He's hit by three home runs, he has produced 46 runs by the end.
- 13:39Hiller standing just off the plate, bends at the waist and the knees, works up on the handle of the bat.
- 13:47A soft shadow at third base comes Andy Carey playing on the rim of the infield grass.
- 13:52It's called a Hiller, can drop for fun.
- 13:56Big curve ball is up over the peak of the camp at ball one.
- 14:01The outfield for Hiller playing in just about straight away and the deepest outfielders Frank Howard in right, explains straight away in right field.
- 14:09The pitch of the plate is soft curve in there for the strike.
- 14:12One ball, one strike.
- 14:19Pull back rocks back, serves it up one, one the fast ball is swung on, there's a high pop up back for third base.
- 14:25Andy Carey looking up in the sun, flips the glasses under it as it drifts into the far ground, he makes the catch.
- 14:31And that's the second out here in the last half of the first inning.
- 14:35That brings up Philippe Ballou.
- 14:39This ain't too much of Philippe Ballou in the past few ball games simply because he's been suffering from what the doctors have diagnosed as a tennis elbow.
- 14:51One day it'll feel fine and the next day it'll be given in fits.
- 14:56But he's in the lineup today, a right hand hitter with an overly close stance standing deep at the plate.
- 15:02He takes the pitch low for ball one.
- 15:09Philippe Ballou has hit 25 runs this year, has 97 runs driven in for the ball club.
- 15:14Go back serves up to him and overhand curve ball and slam foul right down the third base side.
- 15:20One ball and one strike.
- 15:29Here at Candlestick Park the bullpen's are on the opposite sides of the dugouts.
- 15:38The Dodgers bullpen is down back a right field and the Giants bullpen down back a left field.
- 15:46Go back delivers a curve ball and that's in there at the waist first strike.
- 15:50One ball, two strikes.
- 15:53The Giants occupy the dugout on the first base side and the listing ball club in this case the Los Angeles Dodgers on the third base side.
- 16:02Go backs works one through the fastball ramp.
- 16:05Down the walk left wing line, it's in there for new bases anyway.
- 16:09Here comes the Loo into the second base and he's going to hold up there as the curve comes back in from the field with Tommy Davis.
- 16:16So Philly Ballou has gotten the first base hit in the ball game, a line shot double into the corner of left field.
- 16:24Now Philly Ballou is in scoring position at second base and Willie Mays is the batter coming up to the plate.
- 16:35Willie Mays ended the regular season in the 300 class, he's batting in 302.
- 16:41He leads the National League in home runs with 47 and has 137 runs driven in for his club this year.
- 16:49Right hand hitter, wide spread eagle stance, he's all over batter's box.
- 16:55Sandy Cole backs, Willie's work cut out for him, now checks you on her over the shoulder, comes to the plate, fastball is low.
- 17:01One ball, no strikes, count on Willie Mays.
- 17:07Willie keeps moving that wagon tongue back and forth, he's about as nervous as anybody you ever saw.
- 17:14Now he's ready, so is Cole Pax, there's a check of the runner at second, the pitch, let up fastball is high on outside.
- 17:21Two balls and no strikes, two down, last half of the first inning, the Giants is back,
- 17:27Matty Loo having doubled his on at second base and there's no score in the ball game.
- 17:34Roseborough pops that mid up as a target for Cole Pax, Sandy's ready, comes set, delivers fastball,
- 17:42this one's Cole Pax off the first base side, he'll go to the crowd out of play.
- 17:49Got a pretty good crowd here, looking on at this one, this ballpark holds 42,500 and they're still coming in.
- 18:03Hello leading out at second base now with you away here in the bottom of the first inning.
- 18:08Willie Mays always a threat at that plate, has the count of two balls and one strike.
- 18:12Cole Pax is set, kicks and throws, fastball, one on, he keeps going field, there's a well hit ball,
- 18:19and here it is, a home run for Willie Mays.
- 18:48Willie Mays has just pounded a home run over the white center field fence, scoring Billy Pallu ahead of him to put the Giants out in front of 2-0.
- 18:59Hit number two, runs one and two off Sandy Cole Pax, and the batter up at the plate now is Orlando Sepeta.
- 19:06Right hand hitter, leads back from the high inside fastball, ball one.
- 19:11Sepeta batting at 3-0-7, 34 home runs, 112 runs driven in this year.
- 19:18Cole Pax works in, pitches outside, that's ball two.
- 19:25Two balls, no strikes.
- 19:27This is in the last half of the first inning after two men were out.
- 19:32Dymus called and Jim Gilliam comes in from second base to talk to Sandy Cole Pax.
- 19:39In the last half of this first inning, Harvey Keene let it off with a fly ball to right field to Frank Howard.
- 19:44Second baseman Chuck Keller fouled out, the third baseman Andy Kerry, and then Billy Pallu came along and hit a line shot past Andy Kerry, down along the left field line for a double.
- 19:55Willie Mays followed with a blast over the right center field fence for a home run.
- 20:00Sepeta looks, the curve is outside, Cole Pax is cutting behind now, three balls and no strikes.
- 20:16Now the pitch, fastball is fouled back over the straight, so Sepeta had the green line from Whitey Lockman in third base to go for it.
- 20:26Three balls, one strike, is the count now on, is Sepeta.
- 20:40Down rides the next pitch and after it, Sepeta fouls this one back.
- 20:45The count now goes along to three and two.
- 20:59Now the three to delivery, Sepeta looks and hits one down to the right side, making it up as Lee Wall steps on first base, and that's all there is to the last half of the first inning.
- 21:09Two big runs however for the Giants on two base floors, a double followed by Willie Mays home run.
- 21:18There were no errors and there was no one left on. The score at the end of one full inning of play now, it is San Francisco 2, Los Angeles nothing.
- 21:29Let's take a look at the second inning here, this ball game being played under bright green sunlight at 75 degree temperature, very typical fall day in San Francisco.
- 21:39Billy Fiers to the mound to pitch to Frank Howard, big right hand error, adding a 3-0-1.
- 21:46Takes a hitch and he swing and takes a pitch inside of the knees for ball one.
- 21:5231 home runs for the Dodgers this year and has driven in 117 runs.
- 21:59Here's comes to end the curve ball, a slam back foul to the screen. One ball and one strike.
- 22:06Six feet seven, 250 fouls, this guy from Columbus, Ohio, star athlete at Ohio State, and has carried that talent over into the Dodger camp as one of their outfields.
- 22:21The 1-1 pitch by Billy Fiers, big soft curve and that floats in there low. Two balls and one strike.
- 22:29Billy Fiers threw everything down there at the time of his blow, gave the big fellow all the emotion he had and very little speed.
- 22:37Needless to say the outfield for Frank Howard has fanned around the left and playing plenty deep.
- 22:43Fiers fast balls, one on a man. Boy Howard cranked up on that one.
- 22:50Two balls and two strikes. We're in the top half of the second inning of this ball game with the Giants leading it to the nothing.
- 22:57By virtue of a double, followed by William A's home run with two outs in the last half.
- 23:02Ovening number one.
- 23:06There's delivers to two and the fast ball is gone.
- 23:14Well, the ball game that will be the first strikeout for Mr. Fiers, that will be his 71st this year. He came into this ball game with a total of 70.
- 23:25Lee Wall's coming up to bat now. Walls hasn't been used a great deal by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 23:33He's been their utility first baseman and will play in the outfield for them.
- 23:38The ball is handed battered. Cutting a 269. Check's up on the first pitch and takes it inside for ball one.
- 23:48Walls right hand hitter stands about three quarters deep with a speak pretty much together.
- 23:52Holds a bat way down for the knob.
- 23:54Point 57 ball games this year for Los Angeles.
- 23:58Fiers fast ball is ripped back over the screen foul.
- 24:02One ball, one strike, one out, nobody on and they cut half the second inning.
- 24:10Walls will be followed by catcher Rose Burl. Johnny Rose Burl.
- 24:22Fiers a big even size. He takes his sign from Bailey. Now works the play.
- 24:27Big soft curve ball has swung on and popped up over the infield. At shortstop, Pagan waiting for it to come down.
- 24:33It settles in the 12th ball of the second half.
- 24:39Go down and they top half of the second inning. Johnny Rose Burl will be the batter now.
- 24:44Left handed hitting catcher.
- 24:47Rose Burl batting a 255 with seven home runs and 55 runs driven in.
- 24:55Two down the bases empty top of the second. The John's leading in the ball game two to nothing.
- 25:02Rose Burl standing deep at the plate.
- 25:05Feed wide spread apart sort of bends at the waist.
- 25:08Fiers comes to him with a fast ball and this is swung on and popped foul off the third base side but that will go into the dugout.
- 25:15Out of play.
- 25:19No balls one strike. Pagan on Johnny Rose Burl.
- 25:31Fiers is all set now on the 0-1 delivery.
- 25:35Now he shakes off Bailey. Now he accepts the sign.
- 25:38Here's the 0-1 pitch. On a check swing the ball goes back and rolls away in foul ground so that'll be strike two on Rose Burl.
- 25:46He was actually trying to duck a high inside curve ball.
- 25:52No balls two strikes.
- 25:57The NBC microphones bringing you all the action from Candlestick Parker this afternoon in sunny San Francisco.
- 26:07Now the 0-2 pitch. There's the curve in there for the strike.
- 26:12Now called out on strikes to retire the strike. A check and strike out now for Billy Fiers.
- 26:17And the Dodgers go quietly here in the second inning with nothing to call.
- 26:21So score at the end of one and a half innings of play now. It is the John's two and the Dodgers have nothing.
- 26:27We pause now for station identification.
- 26:31This is WGY. I should get out today.
- 26:33Now the last half of inning number two and the first one up for the San Francisco Giants will be their third baseman, Jim Davenport.
- 26:41Here by catcher Ed Bailey who was one of the heroes of the ball game played here yesterday as he hit a home run of Houston's Flamethrower,
- 26:52Tirk Farrell.
- 26:55Then following Bailey we'll have the shortstop Jose Pican who is sitting in the number eight position for Alvin Darts Company.
- 27:02Jim Davenport a 294 hitter.
- 27:05A refined third baseman of the Giants has moved in. Standing deep with the plate with a straight away stance.
- 27:12Holds up that way down to the middle.
- 27:14Davenport has 13 home runs this year and 55 runs driven in.
- 27:18Kovacs comes to him with a pitch on the inside and that's ball one.
- 27:23Andy Carrick playing just a step up third base and close to the bag. The outfield fanned to the left and deep.
- 27:30Kovacs fast ball and sit down to the left side foul. Right fast Andy Carrick and right fast coach Wete Lockman.
- 27:38One ball one strike count on Davenport.
- 27:45Kovacs finds himself two runs behind. He's allowed a double to a low and a home run to a maze in the first inning.
- 27:51The pitch is swung on. There's a high foul ball. This one will drift out of play behind the play.
- 27:59One ball and two strikes count on Jim Davenport.
- 28:03In case you've tuned in with us late defensively the Dodgers have Lee Walls in first base. Jim Gilliam in second.
- 28:09Laurie Wills at short and Andy Carrick at third. We'll get the outfield in a moment. The pitch will play the soft curve is high.
- 28:16Got us two balls and two strikes. Jim Davenport is the batter up there.
- 28:21On the left field we have Tommy Davis, Willie Davis in center and the right field Frank Howard.
- 28:26Kovacs delivers. His pitch is way high. Almost gets away from Roseborough.
- 28:32We'll count now to Jim Davenport. Three balls and two strikes.
- 28:37Ed Bailey in the on-back circle. We'll go next.
- 28:45Davenport leaning over from the waist. Kovacs works. We threw the pitch of swung on. There's a high foul ball.
- 28:50I'm going to keep my field. There goes Davis back up against the bench. He can't get it. There's over the fence for Holmrun.
- 28:57That Holmrun blast by Jim Davenport. The third hit on the third round of Sandy Kovacs was a signal for the Los Angeles Bull Bandicoot in the outfield.
- 29:20And I'll give you just one guess as to who is up and throwing. Eddie Robuck.
- 29:35Old rubber arm down there in the bullpen for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 29:40Up with that arm from the San Francisco Giants. Ed Bailey hitting a 323. He has 17 home runs this year. The pitch to him is inside for ball one.
- 29:50Bailey has driven in 44 runs for the ball, but he has flipped the catching duties here at San Francisco this year.
- 29:57William Tom Haller. Haller on the bench. He's a left-hand hitter. Of course, Bailey catching with left-hander Kovacs going.
- 30:06Ed Bailey waggles the wood. Leans over from the waist very sharply. Kovacs works fastball. That's low. Two balls, no strikes.
- 30:21As in yesterday's affairs, and it's repeating here this afternoon, the great leveler weapon, the Holmrun, has been very much in evidence.
- 30:32Kovacs works 2-0. Bailey takes the pitches up to an ease for strike. Two balls and one strike.
- 30:39The right side of the Dodger infield deep, and that first base walls is about a step and a half off the line, playing deep.
- 30:45William plucking up the hole between first and second, back on the rim of the outfield grass.
- 30:51Crack Howard in right field, playing very deep for Bailey. Kovacs works 2-1. Let a pitch this one on, and hit into the right center field for base head.
- 31:02Right pass, Jim Gilliam. Oh, Bailey is on with a single. Hit into the right center.
- 31:09That will be hit number four, given up by Kovacs. Time is called now by Rose Burrow as he goes to the mound, along with Andy Kerry to have a talk with Sandy Kovacs.
- 31:20Down in the bullpen, Eddie Robuck is still cranking up.
- 31:34Now the conference has broken up, and Kovacs is ready to go to the next batsman, the number eight hitter in the order, making his first appearance shortstop, Jose Pacan.
- 31:44On the air, Pacan had the seven home runs, and 55 runs batted in for the Giants.
- 31:53Time is called. Here comes Leo DeRozgerotti. He's going to talk to Kovacs. This might be all for Sandy.
- 31:59Eddie Robuck has been given just about enough time to get ready.
- 32:03Jose Pacan, a 253 hitter, and a right hand hitter, is the man up at the plate, and it looks as though Kovacs is going to come out of there after having pitched one inning, and pitched two men here in the second.
- 32:19So Kovacs is coming out of there.
- 32:23He's pitched one inning, plus going to two men, Davenport and Bailey. Davenport hitting for a home run,
- 32:30and Bailey touching for a line shot single pass, Giliam in the right center field, so Kovacs is coming out.
- 32:39Eddie Robuck is coming on. Here's the fellow who battled a sore arm and went all the way down to the low minors, and fought his way back to the major leagues.
- 32:47Eddie Robuck, trudging across the diamond right now to take up the pitching chore.
- 32:53Going out of Pennsylvania, Eddie Robuck. We'll check up on Robuck's record for you.
- 33:01Robuck has pitched 111 in the third inning. There's a round of applause for Kovacs as he leaves the field.
- 33:08And while Kovacs leaves the field, we'll pause for a moment for this message from our sponsor.
- 33:26Let's get together with a glass of Schlitz.
- 33:32Let's play like dear from Schlitz.
- 33:39Let's play like dear from Schlitz.
- 33:44Let's play like dear from Schlitz.
- 34:00So let's get together with a glass of Schlitz.
- 34:06A friendly glass of Schlitz.
- 34:10The beer that made Milwaukee famous simply because it tastes so good.
- 34:14Real Guest Carina, great like dear.
- 34:21The Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, Milwaukee and other cities.
- 34:26Eddie Robuck, a 6'2", 180 pound right hander out of East Millsboro, Pennsylvania, now lives in Lakewood, California,
- 34:35has taken over the mound for Walter Alston's Los Angeles stud.
- 34:39Sandy Kovacs started this ball game and has been responsible for all of the runs so far and of course all of the base hits.
- 34:45He's given up two home runs and a double and a single.
- 34:48He gave up a two-round home run to Willie Mays in the first inning with a man aboard and two outs.
- 34:54Davenport touched him for a home run leading off the second, Bailey singled into right center field, a land shot,
- 35:01and now Macon is up there to face Eddie Robuck.
- 35:04He turns and throws to first base just to keep Bailey close.
- 35:08Robuck this year, used in relief only, has won 10 ball games and has lost one.
- 35:14He's done a magnificent job for the Dodgers.
- 35:16His record with the San Francisco Giants, one win and no defeats.
- 35:21He comes set now and then worlds and throws to first base just to keep Bailey close again.
- 35:28They are expecting Jose Pagan perhaps to punt and he carry and third base comes crawling in as Eddie Robuck comes set.
- 35:36Down comes that bitch and there is the punt, push down to third base side,
- 35:40carry's gonna hurry, he's up to the ball, close, in time for the put out of first base.
- 35:44The sacrifice works beautifully and Andy carry made a fine play of it.
- 35:48It was one of those duering you don't play.
- 35:53He had to get Natalie's bare hand or missy shot and he got it and made you play.
- 35:58He wants a five three put out if you're scoring it with this on the sacrifice.
- 36:06Bailey has moved down to second base and scoring position and the batter is Billy Pierce who was a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 36:12He's driven in five runs for the ball above this year and on 53 occasions at the plate he's walked away with 12 base hits for a percentage of 226.
- 36:22Left handed batter.
- 36:24Robuck side arms him and the pitchers inside the ball one.
- 36:29Robuck will come a lot three quarter overhand, some side arm.
- 36:34He'll throw a slider pretty well and it's the natural tendency to all of Robuck's pitches, they sink.
- 36:43Eddie checks back over the right shoulder, he had to look at the runner at second base, that's at Bailey.
- 36:49He stretches and comes set, delivers a side armor that swung on hit down to the right side, Gilliam charges, digs it out of the dirt, throws the runner out of first base as that Bailey goes over to third.
- 36:59Oh Billy Pierce is out from second to first.
- 37:02Coming up now is Harvey Keane.
- 37:07Go down and run over to third base, first and second open.
- 37:11Harvey Keane who applied the right field back in the first inning coming up for his second walk out of the second run.
- 37:17Right hand hitter.
- 37:19Score stands right now, three to nothing in favor of San Francisco, three runs on four hits.
- 37:26The LA Dodgers have yet to get a base hit off Billy Pierce.
- 37:34Robuck takes his side off him Roseborough, Bailey leaks down to third base.
- 37:39Here comes that side arm, pitch the crossfires in there for the strike.
- 37:43No balls in one strike.
- 37:46The upfield for Keane, playing him as a punch hitter to right field, giving him a lot of alley in left center.
- 37:55Gilliam has pulled over a step or two towards second and playing deep behind the back.
- 38:00Robuck's pitch, side armor swung on a miss.
- 38:03No balls, two strikes.
- 38:05Roseborough bluffs a throw down to third and Bailey wins scampering back.
- 38:10Robuck asks Roseborough for the sign again and gets it, then steps away from the hill.
- 38:19Now he's set and ready to go.
- 38:22At Bailey taking his lead at third base.
- 38:24Here's the O2 pitch, taken over but low.
- 38:28Count is one ball and two strikes.
- 38:32Chuck O'Cawman walked out in front of the plate and kicked a clod of dirt away.
- 38:38He decides to walk out in front of the plate, get that ball from Robuck and take a look at it.
- 38:47He takes it, looks at it, throws it right back out to the mound, Eddie Robuck.
- 38:53Harvey Keane is the batter here in the last half of the second inning.
- 38:55There are two outs, Eddie Bailey is at third base.
- 38:58Davenport led the inning off with a home run, hit over the left field fence.
- 39:04Bailey followed with a line shot into right center for a single.
- 39:09Moved around the third on a sacrifice and the billy pierce drowned out.
- 39:14Now Robuck is ready. The one two delivery.
- 39:17Side armor, swing on a miss.
- 39:19Push strike three and every time is the side here in the last half of inning number two.
- 39:23Robuck picking up the strike out, first strike out, they got him by Dodger pitching.
- 39:29And here in the last half of the second inning, one run, there were two base hits.
- 39:33There were no errors, one man was left on and the score at the end of two full innings of play now.
- 39:39It's the Giants three and the Los Angeles Dodgers have enough out of the mound.
- 39:44Willie Pierce has cranked up and he's just about ready to go.
- 39:47In case you tuned in with his late, we'll set the Giants for you again defensively.
- 39:51In case you were keeping score and you want to put your men in positions.
- 39:54At first base is Orlando Cepeda.
- 39:57The second baseman is Chuck Hiller at shortstop Jose Pagán.
- 40:02Third base, Jim Davenport.
- 40:04On the left field is Harvey Key.
- 40:06The center fielder, Willie Mayes.
- 40:08And in right field, Philly Pallew.
- 40:10Working the plate, the catcher Ed Bale and out on the mound is Philly Pierce.
- 40:15Pierce record of 15 and six, one and one with the Dodgers this year.
- 40:21He delivers the plate and carries swings on a pitch and hits a back foul.
- 40:24No balls, one strike.
- 40:28And to carry this year, but two home runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 40:37Had 12 runs driven in.
- 40:39Right hand hitter, that's some very severe drops.
- 40:41Swings on the pitch and pops this one back foul.
- 40:43Comes up to the second tier out of play.
- 40:49I wouldn't want to hazard a guess as to how many people are here this afternoon.
- 40:53They're going to be in the neighborhood of 39 to 40,000.
- 41:02Smart holds 40 to 5.
- 41:05Wheeler Pierce now ready to pitch to Andy Kerry.
- 41:08There's the 0-2 delivery.
- 41:10An overhand fast ball and that's blocked.
- 41:12Outside, one ball, two strikes.
- 41:18The outfield for Kerry has fanned around to the left and I'm not playing him too deep.
- 41:22However, Harvey Keene and left field playing straight away and left is the deepest outfield.
- 41:26Fast ball swung on, hit up the middle into the center field for the base hit.
- 41:30Andy Kerry is on.
- 41:33This is the first base hit of Philip Pierce.
- 41:37He had retired six men in order and has not been touched for a single.
- 41:42Wally Davis coming up to the plate.
- 41:44He's a left handed batter.
- 41:46Fleetfooted center fielder of the Dodgers hitting a 289 on the regular season.
- 41:51With 21 home runs and 85 runs batted in.
- 41:56If there is a hole in the outfield, it will be in left center.
- 42:01However, during the course of this year, I have seen this fellow drop that ball into left center field.
- 42:09Perhaps the last time when he was sort of Tommy Hawken out, maybe that's what he was trying to do.
- 42:14Top half of the third inning here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 42:18The first of the playoff games.
- 42:21And it will go the best out of three.
- 42:27Right now the Giants are out in front 3-0.
- 42:30The pitch has swung on there as they ball drilled into left field.
- 42:32Harvey Keene back for it and breves it.
- 42:35He almost missed touchdown when he started to come in.
- 42:39Had to hurl the retreat and reach up on the snare.
- 42:44Told you that this guy Davis would hit to the offensive field and he just now did it.
- 42:50And he carry holding on to first base.
- 42:52Robuck is coming up now.
- 42:54Teddy Robuck.
- 43:03Robuck is a batsman this year and he's a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 43:07Going along at 240.
- 43:12He's had three runs driven in as if no home runs.
- 43:17Right handed batter.
- 43:20He holds that bat way down the end.
- 43:23Pierce delivers to him and Robuck after hits a high fly ball.
- 43:26This one is curving foul.
- 43:28Now goes way up into the second tier off the left field side.
- 43:34When Eddie gets the good wood on that ball he can spike it for you pretty well.
- 43:40Andy Carey is still a runner at first base.
- 43:43And incidentally the first base runner the Dodgers have had all afternoon.
- 43:46They're trailing in the ball game three nothing.
- 43:49The home run has been the big weapon for the judge again this afternoon.
- 43:52Bitch curve ball.
- 43:53Swam back up the middle.
- 43:55Charging his Pagan.
- 43:56He's up for the ball.
- 43:57Shovels over to second for one off.
- 43:58Throw to first not in time.
- 44:00Nice play by Jose Pagan.
- 44:02He had to reverse himself to shovel to Hiller for the force out on Andy Carey coming in.
- 44:06He made that play.
- 44:08Andy Carey went barreling into second base to Hiller and he couldn't get the playoff to Sopeta Fastenout.
- 44:14So Robuck is on at first base on the force out of Carey at second from the shortstop to the second baseman covering.
- 44:22Robuck at first now and Murray Wills coming up to the plate.
- 44:26Murray is the lead off man for the Dodgers and starting their second batting go round.
- 44:31First inning he popped up and out on a soft one to shortstop Pagan.
- 44:40Murray a switch hitter batting right handed of course against Billy Pears.
- 44:43Moves forward at the plate and chokes up on the hand.
- 44:46Takes the pitch under the knees and that's ball one.
- 44:52Three runs on four hits.
- 44:55San Francisco Giants in his first of the playoff games. No runs but one hit for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 45:01They've had quite a tough time of it in scoring runs.
- 45:05Bits swung on slam foul at the third base side.
- 45:09One ball one strike on Murray Wills.
- 45:11Prior to this ball game the Los Angeles Dodgers had gone 21 innings without picking up a score.
- 45:18And they lost their last three ball games to the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 45:22And what a ball game it was yesterday and what a win for Kurt Simmons the veteran Latender.
- 45:26And what a home run was hit by Gene Oliver to run the national league into a tie.
- 45:32The pitch of the plate Wills swings on it loops it out into right field.
- 45:35After he's right under this Billy Pallew he should have it. He does have it.
- 45:39And that's the time of the tie.
- 45:42So when they heard it a threat by Los Angeles but that's it. No runs one hit.
- 45:47There were no errors and one man was left on.
- 45:50The score at the end of two and a half innings of play.
- 45:53It is the San Francisco Giants three and the Visting Los Angeles Dodgers nothing.
- 45:59And we'll move along now into the last half of any number three.
- 46:05We will have as the batsman for the San Francisco Giants second baseman Hiller.
- 46:11He'll be coming up for his second at bat of the day.
- 46:14However this time he will be facing Eddie Robach
- 46:18who will relieve starting pitcher Sandy Kofax in the second inning.
- 46:22I guess you've tuned in with us late. I'll just give you the scoring here in the ball game.
- 46:27Two runs were picked up by the San Francisco Giants in the first inning and it happened this way.
- 46:32And Harvey Keane let off and applied to right field for the first stop and Hiller
- 46:37then fouled out to Andy Kerry.
- 46:39Billy Pallew the right fielder of the Giants smashed a hot shot past Andy Kerry
- 46:43down into the left field corner for a double.
- 46:46He just came to the plate then and cracked one over the right center field wall
- 46:50a good shot of about 400 feet from home plate to drive in the pair.
- 46:55And the Giants then led over Sandy Kofax and the Dodgers two to nothing.
- 47:00So Pater then rolled out to first baseman Lee Wals to retire the side.
- 47:04In the second inning, it was all for Kofax.
- 47:07Robach came out of the bullpen and despite the fact that Paghan then sacrificed fairly to second
- 47:12and Piers moved him on over to third on the ground out. Still the inning was ended when Keane struck out.
- 47:17So it's three to nothing and the Giants lead it.
- 47:20They're up at bat right now and here is Hiller.
- 47:22Looks the one on the first pitch and takes it in there for the strike.
- 47:26Hiller over one having fouled out to Andy Kerry in the first inning.
- 47:32He's a show-kitter. Not a very big guy. He leans over to play.
- 47:38Holds at bat high behind his left ear. Eddie Robach, the side-wheeling right-hander
- 47:44on a relief here for the Los Angeles Dodgers has been used always in relief this year
- 47:50and he has won ten and lost one. He's won an all with San Francisco.
- 47:55He delivers, there's a side armor, drilled out the center field,
- 47:58going back forward is Davis and makes the catch. Easy chance for him and will he hold it in.
- 48:04So one out here in the bottom of the third inning and that will bring on Philly Palou
- 48:08who started all of Robach's trouble back in the first inning.
- 48:11When he hit that line shot, double to left field.
- 48:15He started off today batting at 3.15.
- 48:19Of course that double will help that batting percentage considerably.
- 48:29Philly digging in. He has an overly close stance with his left foot forward to the plate.
- 48:37First pitch is in there taking for the strike. Robach is pretty adept at cross-firing the plate.
- 48:44He throws a pretty good slider. He'll pick up the outside corner knee-high on you many times.
- 48:51Robach ready to crank up again. Better right-hander,
- 48:55bears back and pours the pitch in and it's swung on and hit down to third on a big hot carry.
- 48:59It makes his play to first base low but Walsh digs it out and that's all for Philly Palou.
- 49:06Go down in the last half of the third inning and a better coming up now is William A.
- 49:21San Francisco Sports Fager certainly did sing the praises of this guy in the morning editions.
- 49:28I guess he could have bought this town last night for 20 cents. He was the big hero.
- 49:33Sidearm pitch is behind Willie Mays. He didn't know which way to jump.
- 49:38Finally cut away from it. I guess the most surprised party was Willie.
- 49:45He was jumping around there like a plumbing go dancer.
- 49:49A little bit of all-one to him. Ball thrown behind his back.
- 49:55As long as Robach said that while they won't be digging in too much on him.
- 49:59Sidearm pitch way inside again. Right off the hips.
- 50:03Willie had to jump back from that when he took ball two.
- 50:08Two balls no strikes. Two outs. Last half of the third inning.
- 50:13There are no base runners and the Giants are leading in it three to nothing.
- 50:18These two teams met in the 59 playoff. Fury call. Pitch is into the dirt.
- 50:26Country ball three.
- 50:29Yoko Kahn and the Whippin' the Ball out to Pitch's mind.
- 50:32Missed getting it out there all together.
- 50:38Now for the three and nothing delivery on Willie Mays.
- 50:46Robach delivers it. Pitch is swung on. Goes and gets it.
- 50:51So the count now on Willie is three and one.
- 50:57Los Angeles Dodgers went into the World Series in 59 after having knocked off the San Francisco Giants.
- 51:04Pitch is hitting the left field single for Willie Mays.
- 51:10Yoko that one right through the hole with short stuff.
- 51:15That'll be number one off Robach and it'll be the fifth hit up on the board this afternoon for San Francisco.
- 51:30So as we find out what happens to Spada, you may have time for identification.
- 51:39Now the events turn out. Turn and throw to First Base is not in time. Maze is back.
- 51:46Spada came up in the first inning and retired aside by bouncing down to First Baseman Lee Walls.
- 51:52Unassisted put out for the third out. Robach cranks up. Delivers the pitch of swung on.
- 51:56As the line is short on one off, the wills are short.
- 51:59He plays a tequila and puts the force out on Willie Mays coming down.
- 52:02So that retires aside here on a 6-4 count in the last half of the number three.
- 52:08There was one hit. There was a man left off.
- 52:10And there were no errors. Score at the end of three. The Giants three. The Dodgers have nothing.
- 52:15And now for a bulletin to the NBC Newsroom and Ed Arnold.
- 52:19Here is a bulletin from NBC News. A Justice Department statement just issues.
- 52:24Just issued rather says the state troopers were withdrawn last night from the campus of the University of Mississippi
- 52:30in contradiction to the assurances given by Governor Ross Barnett.
- 52:34The department statement says 150 state troopers had been seen sitting inside their cars a half mile from the campus during the riots.
- 52:42Meanwhile at the state capitol in Jackson Barnett in a statewide radio and TV address has urged Mississippians to maintain law and order
- 52:50even though in his words our state has been invaded by federal forces.
- 52:55NBC News will interrupt the game for all important bulletins. Now back to Candlestick Park.
- 53:00Coming up to the plate for the LA Dodgers Jim Gilliam.
- 53:04Switch hitter and now for his second half back. He came up in the first inning and fouled up and away and out.
- 53:09Two first basements of pay dot.
- 53:12Billy Pierce on the mound. Makes the first pitch. There's a fastball in there for the strike.
- 53:19Billy Pierce has been very effective this afternoon.
- 53:25There's a strikeout so far. He delivers again. The curve is just outside. One ball one strike.
- 53:33Pierce has given up just one base hit to Los Angeles.
- 53:38That base hit came in the third inning. Carried the lead out of the man. Single up the middle.
- 53:44That was the extent of the hitting.
- 53:46Pierce works again. His curve ball and slammed down the shortstop.
- 53:49He's gone. Makes his play to first base and client. Well Gilliam is out of there.
- 53:58One up one down here. The top half of the fourth inning. Now to bring on Tommy Davis.
- 54:04Davis in the first inning. He went off the handle of the bat and popped it up to second baseman Hiller.
- 54:09In a very short right field. 347 hitter at game time. Nationally batting champion for 1962.
- 54:19Had 227 hits to lead the league in that department and led the league in RBIs with 150. Right hand batter.
- 54:26Pierce offers him a curve ball and it slammed out into that field. RB team flips the glasses.
- 54:31The left fielder should have it. It's an easy chance. He does have it. That's a quick mouth.
- 54:38Two down. That's the fourth man to be retired since Andy Kerry's single in the third.
- 54:44Frank Howard led off the second inning by striking up. Giving Billy Pierce his first strike out of the afternoon.
- 54:53Pierce is ready to work to this big guy. Little fall on the mound. Delivers big curve ball.
- 55:05One ball and no strikes. Top half of the fourth inning.
- 55:15NBC very happy to be on the scene here at Candlestick bringing you the action from Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 55:21Pierce's fastball is hit down off the foot of Howard Powell. Kicks out onto the diamond.
- 55:28The count is one ball and one strike on Frank Howard. Should Howard get on, first baseman Lee Walls will follow.
- 55:50Pierce gets his sound out from Ed Bailey. Starts the one-one delivery. Kicks and flows. The pitch is swung on.
- 55:58There's a tremendously high pop up over the infield. A guy on the shortstop says he'll take it and he does take it.
- 56:05That's all for the Dodgers here in the top half of the fourth inning. They go down in one, two, three order with nothing across.
- 56:13Well, this far now at the end of three and a half innings of play at Candlestick Park, it's the Giants in their own ball yard, three, and the Vesting Los Angeles Dodgers, nothing.
- 56:44With the orchestra sounding off down back of left field and the folks here at Candlestick getting into a festival, we move into the last half of the fourth inning.
- 56:54And it will be Jim Davenport to lead things off as he did in the second. This time he'll be facing Eddie Robuck and not Sandy Kofax.
- 57:02Davenport's only time at bat came in the second inning when he let off with a home run poked over the left field screen.
- 57:09He'll be followed by Ed Bailey the catcher and then we'll have the shortstop by God batting in the number eight position.
- 57:16Jim Davenport moving up to the plate now. Soft spoken Alabama, who now makes his home here in California.
- 57:25During the course of the year, we've had plenty of opportunity to talk to this guy. He's quite a competitor.
- 57:39Jim Davenport moving in. Game time, he was batting in 294.
- 57:45He's hit his 14th home run of the year with the one he hit in this ball game, running that tally up to 14.
- 57:52He's out on pitch from Robuck. The sweeper is outside. It's ball one.
- 57:58I'll be able to span to the left for Jimmy there playing deep. Absolutely no wind at all here this afternoon.
- 58:07Pitch has swung on. There's a trickler off to the left of the plate foul. One ball and one strike now on Jim Davenport.
- 58:14Ordinarily, when you visit Candlestick Park, you can expect the wind to be going off the bay and coming right at you.
- 58:22But the weather man has been most kind this afternoon and giving us summer atmosphere all the way.
- 58:29The temperature's got to be in the high 70s, perhaps in the 80s.
- 58:33There's a side on fastball that's blown outside and Davenport's caught now. It's two balls and one strike.
- 58:43I've asked several of the native folks around here. Pitch swung on. There's a foul ball hit off the third base side.
- 58:49Candlestick's two balls, two strikes. Ask of this were the type of weather that we could expect in San Francisco this time of year.
- 59:00And our producer, Hal Aspie, said, oh no. He said, we're having summer here, fella. Where you been?
- 59:07Whatever it is, it's a beautiful day in San Francisco. Here's the two-to-pitch side armor.
- 59:14Swung on and pulled foul off the first base side. That'll go to the crowd out of play.
- 59:18Two balls and two strikes on Jim Davenport. Things have settled down considerably since the hectic moments of the first couple of innings.
- 59:25We're in the bottom of the fourth here at San Francisco with the Giants leading it three to nothing on five base hits.
- 59:33Two of which have been home runs. One or two run home run hit by Willie Mays. It's 48 for the year.
- 59:39And Davenport hit one in the second. Places empty. Right now Jim swings and fouls one down the third base side.
- 59:46So he's caught us two balls and two strikes.
- 59:55That Bailey hanging around to be the next hitter. Certainly was a catcher's day, ST2, in that home run hitting department.
- 1:00:03The drama that was played out in two parts and in two acts, 450 miles apart.
- 1:00:08That Bailey hitting a home run here all over hitting one down in Dodger Town.
- 1:00:12Pitch inside. Look out, Jim. Right under the chin. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:00:20Eddie Robot, the Dodger pitcher, seems to be sighting down the barrel before he cuts it loose.
- 1:00:25Robot takes his sign from Rose Burrell. Starts to see three two motions.
- 1:00:29Delivers, pitches one on. Bell with the center field. Backboard goes Willie Davis. Sundert makes the catch.
- 1:00:36So that's all for Davenport. Hits it straight away center. One away here in the bottom of the fourth inning and that will bring on Ed Bailey.
- 1:00:49That Bailey singled on a line shot past Gilliam in the right center field when he came up in the second inning.
- 1:00:55So he's one for one this afternoon. At game time he was a 223 hitter with 17 home runs. 44 runs driven in.
- 1:01:05Left handed batter. Leans over the plate. Pitch goes, it's a soft curve. It stays high and outside.
- 1:01:13This is the same Ed Bailey who is quite a shining light for the Cincinnati Reds a couple of years back.
- 1:01:27Then rides the next pitch and Bailey takes a look at him. That costs him. One ball, one strike count.
- 1:01:34Robot rocks back, twists and throws. There's that sidearm. There's one on there's a long drive. Keep the right field.
- 1:01:45That could be. There's Howard back by the fence. He's reaching up and taking it. That guy actually reached up above the fence.
- 1:01:54At least it seems so from our NBC booth here. So he reached up above the fence to take that one.
- 1:02:00That Bailey is out. Frank Howard adding play just right. All the two outs here in the last half of the fourth inning and that will bring on shortstop Pagan.
- 1:02:09He's not a very big guy and his fellow Pagan. But he covers that short field.
- 1:02:19Eddie Robach ready to pitch to him. Bards in there right off the point of the chin. Ball one.
- 1:02:29Pagan sacrificed successfully in the second inning and moved that Bailey down the second base. So he hasn't been up officially yet.
- 1:02:41Swings on a fastball and doesn't get it. One ball and one strike.
- 1:02:48Pagan 5 feet 9 weighs about 165 pounds. He comes from Puerto Rico. Barcelona to Puerto Rico.
- 1:02:58Sidearm pitch to him is swung on. Dealed back foul. Count is one ball two strikes on Jose.
- 1:03:07He stands rather deep at the plate and away from it. He'll step into the pitches as they're made.
- 1:03:17Hitting in the number eight spot for the Giants this year. He's managed to come up with a 253 batting average.
- 1:03:2355 runs driven in and has hit seven home runs.
- 1:03:28Last half of the fourth inning there are two outs. Nobody on. And the Giants are leading it. Three to nothing on five base hits.
- 1:03:38The Dodgers have picked up just one base hit. That was Andy Kerry single up the middle back in the third inning.
- 1:03:43The runner didn't get any farther than first base. Sidearm pitch. All strike three.
- 1:03:48That's all for Pagan. He's called out on strikes here. Every time he's a side in the last half of inning number four and Robuck picks up his second strike out of the afternoon.
- 1:03:58At the end of four full innings of play they score his the Giants three and the Dodgers nothing. Now a message from our sponsor.
- 1:04:14The three of us are six. Three with quiet and just a kiss of a hug. Just like real gusto in two. Every drop of soul has a get together with us.
- 1:04:29Now the six. Real gusto in a great fight. Get that real gusto. Only six has got the hungry, creamy white collar to the very last stop.
- 1:04:51Now the other day. The walkie famous simply because it tastes so good. The Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company Milwaukee and other cities.
- 1:05:10Now helper back here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco for NBC. We have had four innings of play here at Candlestick in this first game of the playoff series.
- 1:05:21And the total is four innings of play. Three runs. Five hits. No errors for San Francisco. The Giants have left two men on and for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:05:30No runs but one hit off a tough left hander named Billy Pierce. And that was a single. No runs. One hit. No errors. They have stranded one man.
- 1:05:39Lee Walls is the batsman up at the plate right now to start the fifth. He's 0 for one. Popped the shorties first time. Takes a pitch low for Ball Wank.
- 1:05:49Lee Walls was hitting 269 at game time. Lee Spectacled right hand hitter. Pierce comes in with a curve ball and runs it right down the pipe. One ball, one strike.
- 1:06:03That's some activity going down in the bullpen now for Los Angeles. We'll check up on that man for you in a moment.
- 1:06:14There's delivers a pitch of swung on by Walls. There's a high fly ball hitting the run. And he runs it to be short right field. So Peter is back on.
- 1:06:22That's all for Walls. Adi Lo, a rather filling balloon making catch here in the top half of the penny.
- 1:06:40Down in the bullpen right hander Larry Sherry. He's up and starting the throw for Los Angeles. Larry Sherry.
- 1:06:50Johnny Roseboro the batter. He was called out on strikes in the second. He's 0 for one.
- 1:06:54Billy Pierce cranks up. The little left hander delivers and the pitch of swung on there is a drive to right field.
- 1:06:59And Lo backs up near the fence. Sure to have it. Does have it. There's the second half.
- 1:07:06Still up. Go down in the top half of any number five.
- 1:07:12Now coming up to the plate is the guy who possesses the only base hit. The Los Angeles Dodgers now own. That's Andy Carrick.
- 1:07:20Andy Singaluck the middle in the third inning. Willie Davis followed in with a line shot out through the left field or Harvey Keane.
- 1:07:27And then Andy Robock making his first appearances of batsman face. Of course Andy Carrick out at second base from short to second.
- 1:07:36The inning was ended when Wills applied to right field. Billy Pierce ready. Delivered to carry a right hand hitter.
- 1:07:43Swung on strike one.
- 1:07:51Andy's spread out in batter's box. Four and a half all the way across it.
- 1:07:57Down comes the pitch. Inside off the shootouts. One ball one strike count on Andy Carrick.
- 1:08:04Still throwing down in the. And they both end. All slender right hander.
- 1:08:11Pierce is ready. Cranks up. Delivers one and one. His fast ball of swung on.
- 1:08:15Strike two.
- 1:08:30Pierce asks for the sign again. He gets it from Bailey.
- 1:08:36Now he's ready to go.
- 1:08:40In comes the pitch. Just outside.
- 1:08:46Twenty-five scoreless innings. So far for the Los Angeles Dodgers and they haven't scored yet in this one.
- 1:08:52There are two down. Nobody on.
- 1:08:56Well if they did not score in this one it will be twenty-six straight scoreless innings.
- 1:09:01Having a rough way of it to go. Overhand fast ball. Swung on this one.
- 1:09:07Twenty-six scoreless innings.
- 1:09:11And it appears that he's under his third strike now.
- 1:09:14Oh and it's off after the inning. Nothing across for M.A.
- 1:09:19And the score at the end of four and a half innings of play remains.
- 1:09:22Drives three and the Dodgers have nothing.
- 1:09:27We'll move along now into the last half. Fitting number five.
- 1:09:30And the first batter up for San Francisco will be their pitcher Billy Fears.
- 1:09:34Eddie Robuck going back out to the mound now for Los Angeles.
- 1:09:38In case you hooked up with a slate.
- 1:09:41Sandy Kofack started this ball game and got through the first inning.
- 1:09:45Giving up two hits. A double to Billy Malu and Willie May's home run which put him behind two to nothing.
- 1:09:51And then in the second inning he was tagged immediately by the first batter up to Davenport
- 1:09:56for a home run to make the score three to nothing.
- 1:09:58He pitched with the next man Bailey and Bailey hit a rifle shot into right center for a single
- 1:10:03and that was all for Sandy. Eddie Robuck came on to put out the fire and he's been on there ever since.
- 1:10:08Robuck by the way has given up just one of the five hits that the San Francisco Giants have picked up up to this moment.
- 1:10:15Out of sea out in the mound out of drinking up getting ready to face the Giants in the last half of the state inning.
- 1:10:20Please remember that tomorrow's ball game will come to you from Dodger Stadium down in Los Angeles.
- 1:10:25We'll be with you at the same time as we were on the tap the room.
- 1:10:32And the World Series will be heard over many of these same stations starting on Thursday.
- 1:10:38And it will open in the National League Park so it means that it will open either here at San Francisco or down at Los Angeles.
- 1:10:46It all depends on how this playoff series comes up. You know it's the best out of three.
- 1:10:50I've got to win two out of the three to be crowned the champions of the National League.
- 1:10:55So it'll be a bitter battle for the next 48 hours at least to see who's going to represent the National League against the New York Yankees
- 1:11:04in the ball classic this year.
- 1:11:06Now here's Billy Pierce who rolled out to the right side to Jim Gilliam in the second inning.
- 1:11:10Robuck comes to him and the ball exit out in front of the plate. Robuck off the mound up with it.
- 1:11:15There he goes. He's throwed a first in plenty of time and that's it as far as Pierce is concerned.
- 1:11:20He grounds out from pitcher to first base.
- 1:11:24One away in the last half of the fifth inning and coming up now is Harvey Keane.
- 1:11:31Keane is starting the third batting go round for San Francisco.
- 1:11:36He's sped on right hand, air-flagged right field back in the first inning and struck out in the second.
- 1:11:44One of the two strikeout victims of Robuck.
- 1:11:51Steady Eddie on the mound as over he's heading out, twists and throws.
- 1:11:54There's that sidearm delivering it, cracks in there with strike.
- 1:11:58Oh, ball's in one strike.
- 1:12:00For Harvey Keane the outfield is shaded slightly to right field.
- 1:12:05Oh, and the outfield's in left center.
- 1:12:08He looks at another sweeper and distance low on outside and that runs his count to one ball and one strike.
- 1:12:16Robuck kicking dirt pitches the mound, gets a smooth down, picks it up to his leg and...
- 1:12:24Keane patiently waiting for him at the plate.
- 1:12:29There is no more activity now than the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:12:34Larry Sherry has gone back to sit down. Now the one-one pitch from Robuck, side armor, is taken just outside of our waistline.
- 1:12:41Two balls, one strike.
- 1:12:47Well, certainly has been an exciting race.
- 1:12:51Had the National League this year.
- 1:12:54Sidearm pitch, Keane pumps it back foul over the screen, he's got his two balls, two strikes.
- 1:13:01And it's been exciting in the National League all the way around this year.
- 1:13:05Watching two new Land Riders come into the National League,
- 1:13:10loading the schedule up to 162 games rather than the 154 game schedule we'd had previously.
- 1:13:18So this will be the first time in 162 game schedule that a playoff has been called for as the needed.
- 1:13:27They do two pitch, side arm way outside, he gets away from Roseburg, goes all the way back to the screen.
- 1:13:33Look how the three balls and two strikes on Harvey Keane.
- 1:13:36One out here on the last half of inning number five.
- 1:13:41There are no base runners and the Giants are leading it three to nothing on five base hits.
- 1:13:45We've had two home runs here this afternoon, many said a two-run home run in the first inning.
- 1:13:50They haven't bought the solo there in a second.
- 1:13:52The pitch has swung on a slow, but under the third, carry up with it, makes his play the first base in time and keeps up.
- 1:13:57Nice play by Andy Carey, he had to come in and short hop that ball.
- 1:14:05Chuck Diller, left-handed in the second baseman coming up there now.
- 1:14:10One of the most unexpected things in the National League this year was the necessity of a playoff, but it has happened.
- 1:14:21Side arm pitch to Diller, swung on and hung out into center field, got up and over to his right for it and under it is Willie Davis,
- 1:14:27makes a basket catch and that retires the side here to the fifth inning.
- 1:14:30Nice catch by Davidson Center.
- 1:14:33Nugget of Grosso in the bottom of the fifth inning and the score team to five ball into the play remains.
- 1:14:38The Giants three and the Los Angeles Dodgers have nothing.
- 1:14:42Out of the bounds, Willie Pierce, cranking up, getting ready for the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:14:49Willie Davis is being called up to the plate now by plate umpire, John Fouconn.
- 1:14:56Stan Landis was forced to fill in for Al Barlech who wasn't able to make the lane connections in time for the East Coast to get over here for the playoff.
- 1:15:08So Landis is at third base.
- 1:15:10We have Conlon behind the plate, Dusty Farkas at first and Argy Donatungly, the senior umpires in the group, working this one today.
- 1:15:17Willie Pierce now comes to the plate, pitchers one on, there's a bounding ball to first.
- 1:15:20The players up with it on a life backhand stab and raises the first win.
- 1:15:24No, Davis is out.
- 1:15:30We're going to have a batsman now up for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:15:36Now let's see who is going to come up there doing the swinging.
- 1:16:02Number 14, Ken Macmillan, right hand pitter is coming up the bat for Robott.
- 1:16:08Standing in, takes pitch in there for the strike.
- 1:16:18Slams his next pitch and there's a lane shut past seven, poor Don into the left field corner, that's in there for a face hit.
- 1:16:23He starts to dig for second base as he makes the big wide turn and first and decides he better hold on.
- 1:16:28Harvey Keene had that ball in and a big hurry.
- 1:16:32There is the second Dodger hit.
- 1:16:34Ken Macmillan batting for Robott, single to left field.
- 1:16:45I wills, comes up now, he's a lead off man.
- 1:16:48Ken Macmillan was with the Reno Ball Club last year.
- 1:16:55Oxnard, California boy, pretty good size for that.
- 1:16:58He's six three, weighs 190 pounds.
- 1:17:01I think we're going to have a runner for him also.
- 1:17:15Shortstop Trezusky, utility infielder, shortstop Trezusky is coming in to run.
- 1:17:22He's running for Macmillan, Trezusky.
- 1:17:31Not to play now as more wills, I'm the pitch tomorrow, he's in there for the strike.
- 1:17:36Dick Trezusky from Island, Pennsylvania, just taken over the position at first base, the runner at first base position.
- 1:17:45He's running for Macmillan, little batter for Eddie Robott.
- 1:17:50Down the ball fan we have Bob Bowlin getting ready for the John.
- 1:17:53A bit of a slung on there, there's a little nut pop up, back by Shortstop, Macmillan reaches up and grabs it.
- 1:17:58Trezusky holds on to first base.
- 1:18:02A wills, pops up an odd for the second time, to a supposing Shortstop, Jose Macmillan.
- 1:18:07There are two outs who are the runner at first base, on the batter at Jim Gilliam.
- 1:18:12Still of course, Jim is hitting right handed.
- 1:18:16He's a switch hitter.
- 1:18:19Billy Pierce is ready to go to work here on Jim Gilliam.
- 1:18:22He's gotten Junior Place on the foul ball to the first baseman and the ground out to Shortstop.
- 1:18:29He comes up, checks the runner Trezusky at first base, delivers the pitch, is a curve low, a ball one.
- 1:18:35Now we'll have Sherry coming on now in the Dodger cars.
- 1:18:41The last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:18:48Pitch is in tight up against Gilliam's chest, hits a handle, the batter scoots away for a strike.
- 1:18:56The count is one ball one strike on Jim.
- 1:19:00There are two outs here in the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:19:04Trezusky running for Macmillan, who batted for Robuck, is on at first base.
- 1:19:10Bowlin cracking up down on the bullpen for the Giants, where is Sherry and they bullpen for the Dodgers.
- 1:19:16We know the Dodgers are going to have a new pitcher.
- 1:19:20Pierce is ready, delivers pitching side off the base.
- 1:19:24Two balls and one strike to count on Jim Gilliam.
- 1:19:28If Gilliam gets on, that's Armie Davis, a big slugger of the Los Angeles Dodgers will be up there.
- 1:19:34Time is called, here comes Alvin Darkout on the playing field.
- 1:19:38He wants to talk to Billy Pierce and while he takes that time,
- 1:19:44let us pause right here for station identification.
- 1:19:48Come to the Go Show, the Go Show, like the Go Show by Sherby Lay for 63.
- 1:19:56Among the stars of the Go Show, the 63 Sherby Lay with the jet smooth look of luxury, plus important new easy care features.

- 1:20:14Deposits made by October 15th are in dividends from the first at Troy Savings Bank Troy.
- 1:20:20Celebrate his words of wisdom though Billy Pierce, he's gone back to the Giant Dogot.
- 1:20:26The MGMOR man has sat down now, Jim Gilliam's at their pump in the wood, he's got us two balls and one strike.
- 1:20:31Here's Texas runner Krasuski at first base and comes to the plate with a fastball and it's just a little old.
- 1:20:37That'll be ball three to Gilliam, three balls and one strike.
- 1:20:41Jim looks down at the third base to see what kind of sign Leo D'Rosier might be relaying from manager Alston.
- 1:20:53Jim leaning over the plate guarding it from behind.
- 1:20:56Now the three one pitch toy, here's cut the loose off curve outside, ball four.
- 1:21:01Well Gilliam's a sick away and becomes a base runner, that moves Krasuski down a second.
- 1:21:06And this is as far as anybody has gotten on the base pass for the Los Angeles Dodgers here at the Saercanone.
- 1:21:13So coming up to the plate now, Tommy Davis represents the tying run.
- 1:21:18The Giants are leading it three to nothing here in the got half to six inning.
- 1:21:22There are two outs, there are runners on at first and second.
- 1:21:25Tom having walked picking up the first base on balls from Pierce and that's only his 35th base on balls this year.
- 1:21:31Jim Gilliam is at first and at second base is Krasuski who is running for McMullen who batted for Eddie Robot.
- 1:21:41Davis is clocked to second base and has flagged the left so Tommy's over two this afternoon.
- 1:21:50And the third runners for Los Angeles playing it rather close to the vest.
- 1:21:55Krasuski taking it shortly, now lengthens it by a step or two.
- 1:21:59Hits the plate and swung on, drilled into right center field.
- 1:22:02Overboard is Alou, he's underpitched the gap.
- 1:22:13So the Dodgers threat goes by the boards here in the got half to six inning.
- 1:22:17No runs, there was one base that coupled with a walk, two men were left on and there were no errors.
- 1:22:22Only three men have been stranded now by the Los Angeles Dodgers in going to bat six times and they've gone 27 scoreless innings.
- 1:22:32They score at the end of five and a half innings of play, remains the Giants three and the Los Angeles Dodgers have nothing.
- 1:22:39The pitchers for tomorrow's ball game have been announced.
- 1:22:43Alvin Dark has announced his pitcher and manager Alston is still on the fence as far as his selection is concerned.
- 1:22:51Tomorrow it will be Jack Sanford going for the San Francisco Giants and he will face either Stan Williams,
- 1:23:03Rickert or perhaps Drysdale.
- 1:23:05It all depends on how this ball game comes out.
- 1:23:08But Alston may be coming back with Don Drysdale after a very short rest.
- 1:23:13Big Van Nijs right-hander has been the workhorse on the staff for the Los Angeles Dodgers this year.
- 1:23:21He's placed quite a record for himself and he's quite a commendable pitcher.
- 1:23:28Alston of course is defending right now on Larry Sherry as he sends him in.
- 1:23:35Larry Sherry.
- 1:23:39All right, and there has appeared in 57 ball games for his club this year.
- 1:23:43He's been 89 and 2-3 innings.
- 1:23:45The German run average is 3.01.
- 1:23:49Larry Sherry.
- 1:23:53Larry has saved 10 ball games for the Dodgers this year.
- 1:23:57He's second only to Bernaske in that department.
- 1:24:00Bernaske having saved 19.
- 1:24:04Larry Sherry's record is 7 wins and 3 losses.
- 1:24:097 wins and 3 losses.
- 1:24:11Sherry doing the pitching.
- 1:24:14Comes in with a pass ball and rips it in there to Billy Palu, a straight one.
- 1:24:24Roseborough signs up for the pitch.
- 1:24:26Sherry cuts it loose.
- 1:24:28That's a lot of pitch.
- 1:24:29He's inside, one ball, one straight.
- 1:24:39As far as the record with the San Francisco Giants this year is concerned, Sherry has none.
- 1:24:44He's going all with him.
- 1:24:45Pitch is swung on.
- 1:24:46There's a high-pocket in foul ground off the first base.
- 1:24:48Lee Wall is chasing.
- 1:24:49Hungry?
- 1:24:50Good habit.
- 1:24:51He has it.
- 1:24:52Oh, there's the first foul.
- 1:24:53Billy Palu fouls out the first baseman Lee Wall.
- 1:24:56Now about it coming up to the plate is William Ayers.
- 1:25:12William Ayers has been a rich starter in this ballgame.
- 1:25:14He's driven in two of the three runs the Giants now possess.
- 1:25:17He's had a home run and a single.
- 1:25:19Home run to right center field over the fence and a single left.
- 1:25:23That was back in the third and he did not get any farther than the first base, however.
- 1:25:28The pitch go-on is in there for the strike.
- 1:25:33Larry Sherry.
- 1:25:36The third pitcher to be used here this afternoon by Walter Austin.
- 1:25:42Very close.
- 1:25:43All that pitch to William Ayers, he really had to jump away from that.
- 1:25:47One ball and one straight.
- 1:25:51Larry Sherry.
- 1:25:53Los Angeles boy all the way.
- 1:25:54Born, raised there, still lives in.
- 1:25:56He lays after his next pitch and fouls it back into the screen.
- 1:26:00One ball to strike count.
- 1:26:02Old say hey.
- 1:26:04Well, they started off today batting a 302 with 47 home runs.
- 1:26:07Hittiest 48 from the first inning.
- 1:26:09Two run affairs.
- 1:26:12Giants puffed out to a two nothing lead and crossed to take a little more with a run in the second.
- 1:26:16They're leading it three to nothing.
- 1:26:20LA has picked up just two base hits.
- 1:26:22Two singles off Billy Pierce.
- 1:26:24Pitch inside off Jim White and William Ayers count now has two balls, two strikes.
- 1:26:35Manager Austin's observation last evening was a simple one.
- 1:26:39Pitch swung off the base, and the high drive hit the right field.
- 1:26:42Way back in there it goes.
- 1:26:45One of the most phenomenal balls.
- 1:27:13One of the most phenomenal ball players of our time has just hit his second home run here this afternoon.
- 1:27:18And here's Sopeta up there taking the pitch in there for a ball.
- 1:27:22In tight up against the body.
- 1:27:24Willie Mays is 49th home run to put the Giants out in front for nothing.
- 1:27:30Pitch to Sopeta is low.
- 1:27:32That's ball two.
- 1:27:35Willie Mays hit that one over the right field screen.
- 1:27:38A pretty good size poke here at Candlestick.
- 1:27:41Ball had to go about 400 feet to go over that screen as far back as it went.
- 1:27:46Sidearm pitch to Sopeta is in there for the strike.
- 1:27:49The Candlestick won.
- 1:27:52Willie Mays has driven in three of the four runs here this afternoon.
- 1:27:55He's been on a ramp, babe.
- 1:27:58The two wonderlug race.
- 1:27:59That's ball, flipped in there under the base.
- 1:28:02Three balls and one strike.
- 1:28:04With one off, Mays connected for his 49th home run of the year.
- 1:28:1047th little hit in the regular 162 game schedule two here in the playoff game.
- 1:28:17Pitch under the letters for the first place.
- 1:28:26Sopeta now has a full count.
- 1:28:28Three balls and two strikes.
- 1:28:31One out, nobody on.
- 1:28:33Boarding out being favored by the Giants.
- 1:28:35Sherry works the pitch of Slamoff.
- 1:28:37He'll keep left field as David Roog, he has left hand, and it's down.
- 1:29:04Orlando Sopeta, cracks his 35th home run of the year.
- 1:29:09Drives a five over the left field fence.
- 1:29:13That is the second hit and the second run of Larry Sherry and the Giants lead it five to nothing.
- 1:29:19Here's Jim Davenport.
- 1:29:21Sherry drives the curve on him and gets it in there for the strike.
- 1:29:26That is Orlando Sopeta's first hit this afternoon.
- 1:29:29He now has 113 runs driven in three ball clubs this year.
- 1:29:33Ron Peranoske the left hander up in the bullpen now for the Dodgers.
- 1:29:38The pitch is made to the plate inside and the count is one ball, one strike.
- 1:29:44So Alston has a left and right hander up.
- 1:29:47Now the left hander sits down, the right hander continues.
- 1:29:50Pitch is one on.
- 1:29:51Nice job, face him.
- 1:29:52Left field.
- 1:29:53Davenport plans one to left on the line.
- 1:29:57That will be hit number three given up by Sherry.
- 1:30:00Hit number eight.
- 1:30:02Washington, San Francisco as they continue to wade into the Los Angeles pitching.
- 1:30:07Got a right hander up for now for Walter Austin's company.
- 1:30:11Let's see who that is down in the bullpen.
- 1:30:20Jack Smith.
- 1:30:27Jackson at the Atlanta Boy,
- 1:30:30chunky right-hander cranking up down in the bullpen for Walder Austin.
- 1:30:36Larry, uh, Jerry's been getting his box here in the sixth inning. He came on.
- 1:30:41In the last half of the sixth inning, he can really, uh, have any robot.
- 1:30:48That's Bailey the batter, one on, one on here, down in court at first base.
- 1:30:51Jerry, check that runner. Delivers a white Bailey left-hand hitter, takes a blow with ball one.
- 1:31:03Every one of the runs that John's now possessed have been the results of home runs.
- 1:31:09There have been four of them hit here.
- 1:31:12Soft curveball, Bailey takes a blow.
- 1:31:15No balls, no straight.
- 1:31:16Willie Mays hit a two-run home run in the first inning.
- 1:31:21Here comes Leo DuRocco out to talk to Jerry. That may be all for him.
- 1:31:26Davenport followed in the second with a solo affair.
- 1:31:30Then in the sixth inning, Willie Mays with the bases empty repeated to hit his 49th home run of the year.
- 1:31:36And Orlando Sopeta balls back-to-back with him hitting his 35th.
- 1:31:40That accounted for all the runs for the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:31:43And Jerry is coming out of the ballgame.
- 1:31:46That's going to be all for him. He's pitched one third of an inning.
- 1:31:50And he goes.
- 1:31:53Coming on will be Jack Smith.
- 1:32:00Checking up on Smittyfoil.
- 1:32:06He's a 6'185 pound right-hander.
- 1:32:08He came out of Pineville, Kentucky, makes his home now in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 1:32:13And he did his pitching last year for Atlanta.
- 1:32:17He won 12 and lost 7.
- 1:32:26Let's see if memory serves me right, Lee.
- 1:32:28Killer Brew has finished out a half-48 home run this year.
- 1:32:33In the regular season in the American League,
- 1:32:35Willie Mays has now hit 49.
- 1:32:39Pretty tough customer this Mays, huh?
- 1:32:42Jack Smith is coming on. He'll be appearing in his 7th ballgame.
- 1:32:49For the LA Dodgers, he's pitched only 8 innings, however.
- 1:32:54He's given up 8 hits, 5 runs, and all 5 of them were earned.
- 1:32:59He has passed 4 men and has struck out 5.
- 1:33:01His earned run average is 5.63. He has no record.
- 1:33:06He's all and all with the league and all and all course.
- 1:33:10Whether San Francisco, John's.
- 1:33:13Please remember, this ballgame still belongs to starting pitcher Sandy Kofax,
- 1:33:17who was belted out in the second inning.
- 1:33:19While Smith warms up out there and gets ready to pitch at Bayley,
- 1:33:22now a message from our sponsor.
- 1:33:32Let's get together with the glass touch with the innings, however.
- 1:33:39He's given up 8 hits, 5 runs, and all 5 of them were earned.
- 1:33:44He has passed 4 men and has struck out 5.
- 1:33:47His earned run average is 5.63. He has no record.
- 1:33:52He's all and all with the league and all and all course.
- 1:33:57Whether San Francisco, John's.
- 1:33:59Please remember, this ballgame still belongs to starting pitcher Sandy Kofax,
- 1:34:03who was belted out in the second inning.
- 1:34:05While Smith warms up out there and gets ready to pitch at Bayley,
- 1:34:08now a message from our sponsor.
- 1:34:19Let's get together with the glass of slits.
- 1:34:24A friendly glass of slits.
- 1:34:26A beer that's going to break life's backbeat.
- 1:34:43Get that real glass of lice that has got from the creamy white collar
- 1:34:49to the very last drop.
- 1:34:50Let's get together with the glass of slits.
- 1:34:56A beer that's going to break life's backbeat.
- 1:35:06A beer that made Milwaukee famous simply because it tastes so good.
- 1:35:10Let's brew and company Milwaukee and other cities.
- 1:35:14Off with the play that's very nice.
- 1:35:16And that's Smith is taking over on the mound.
- 1:35:20He's ready to fire now on the 3-1 count.
- 1:35:22Deliver his world ball four.
- 1:35:24All that he is on moving down and forth down to second base.
- 1:35:36Coming up to the plate now will be Hozray for God.
- 1:35:38With one out runners in the first and second.
- 1:35:43A gun hitting right handed.
- 1:35:46A sacrifice done has been called out on strike so he's over one this afternoon.
- 1:35:50Little big runs of compiling in here in the bottom of a sixth inning
- 1:35:54and the Giants are leading in the ball game.
- 1:35:56Five to nothing.
- 1:35:58Jack Smith right hander comes set.
- 1:36:00Deliver his soft curve ball low and outside.
- 1:36:03Count is one ball and Hozray.
- 1:36:05The outfield despite the gap is left the hole in the outfield
- 1:36:13and right center for the guy.
- 1:36:15This has been a tough ballpark for the Dodgers this year.
- 1:36:21That's ball to the plate as well.
- 1:36:24Count is two balls and Hozray.
- 1:36:26Of the nine ball games that were played here in the regular season.
- 1:36:29Twenty two clubs.
- 1:36:30The Los Angeles Dodgers were able to win only three of them
- 1:36:35and they dropped six to San Francisco.
- 1:36:37It was just reversed down at Dodger Town.
- 1:36:43Hozray for God getting his time out.
- 1:36:45The old Carolina comment.
- 1:36:47Why do you lock them down behind first?
- 1:36:49Down behind third base.
- 1:36:51Run into first and second.
- 1:36:53Smith delivers the pitch to the second way inside.
- 1:36:55Take all away.
- 1:36:56Three balls no strike.
- 1:37:01Down and forth to runner at second base.
- 1:37:03Bailey is to run for first.
- 1:37:05One out.
- 1:37:07Third base is open.
- 1:37:10Macdon the number eight hitter in the order will be followed by
- 1:37:13pitcher Philly Fiers.
- 1:37:15Lye to nothing in favor of San Francisco.
- 1:37:17Smith delivers in there for the strike.
- 1:37:21Macdon giving a little fancy dance.
- 1:37:22Coming to bat down off the shoulder trying to distract.
- 1:37:26But he wasn't successful.
- 1:37:30Three one count.
- 1:37:37So Smith now is just one pitch away from loading them up here in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:37:45Come set now.
- 1:37:47Delivered on the three one count.
- 1:37:49The pitch is in there for strike two.
- 1:37:50Two out.
- 1:37:52Three and two.
- 1:37:54Now with one out.
- 1:37:56Down and forth.
- 1:37:58At second base and Philly at first could be on the move.
- 1:38:00We'll keep an eye on them to see how they're going to operate against this barrel chest at right hander.
- 1:38:06That field playing just about straight away for Macdonald.
- 1:38:10And they're not playing too deep.
- 1:38:12In field are normal positions.
- 1:38:14Playing at double play depth.
- 1:38:15Smith taking plenty of time.
- 1:38:17Get the sign Roseboro.
- 1:38:19There's the mid up as a target.
- 1:38:21Smith becomes set.
- 1:38:23Overhand fastball.
- 1:38:25One on a missed strike three.
- 1:38:27The runners break the foregoes down the third carry.
- 1:38:29He's got the ball waiting for the runner moving down from third that's seven points.
- 1:38:31So actually it's a double play.
- 1:38:33On on this double play.
- 1:38:35Macdon strikes out.
- 1:38:37And the throw from the catcher Roseboro down the anti-carry.
- 1:38:39He gets seven for the attempt to move into third base.
- 1:38:41And the second throw from the catcher Roseboro.
- 1:38:42He gets seven for the attempt to move into third base.
- 1:38:45So that's it here in the last half of the clinic.
- 1:38:48There was a man left on.
- 1:38:50There were two runs on two bases both home runs.
- 1:38:52Make that three bases two home runs of the single.
- 1:38:54So it's the end of six full enemies of play now.
- 1:38:57It's the Giants five.
- 1:38:59And the Los Angeles Dodgers have nothing.
- 1:39:04Frank Howard who has plenty of power.
- 1:39:07And he's demonstrated on quite a few occasions this year.
- 1:39:09Thirty one of them as a matter of fact.
- 1:39:12The whole run department.
- 1:39:15They're stepping up with the plate knocker today.
- 1:39:17He has struck out and talked the short stuff.
- 1:39:19And the ball he hit the short stuff.
- 1:39:22And that cut up in the singles he'd have a million of them.
- 1:39:24The sky high thing.
- 1:39:26He's over two.
- 1:39:28There's the fire the fastball doing.
- 1:39:29The ball is going to be a little bit of a strike.
- 1:39:39Howard waiting.
- 1:39:41Little belly bears cranks up again.
- 1:39:43There's that.
- 1:39:45Howard almost broke his back on that.
- 1:39:47He like you lose his uniform shirt and everything.
- 1:39:50He was really gone for the fence.
- 1:39:52The boys with great say he was swinging for the down.
- 1:39:53No ball two strikes on Frank Howard.
- 1:40:02There's the fastball outside.
- 1:40:04One ball two strike down.
- 1:40:06Try to get hard to go for a better.
- 1:40:08Well a giant fan.
- 1:40:10You're not sort of settled back into rather some places.
- 1:40:14They're both upside in front five and hold.
- 1:40:16There's been a new web out of the line.
- 1:40:18A little bit of a fastball.
- 1:40:26Back out number four for the bears.
- 1:40:28He's got Howard's place.
- 1:40:30One out here in the top of the seventh inning in about an hour's lead wall.
- 1:40:35Walls has popped the shortstop and has played the right field.
- 1:40:42Right hand hitter standing just off the plate.
- 1:40:44Here's tries to curve on him this time and it's outside.
- 1:40:48That's all one.
- 1:40:50Have some action down in the bullpen for the Santa was.
- 1:40:54Douglas.
- 1:40:59Walls waiting to play now for the next pitch to be cut loose.
- 1:41:03And it writes fastball swing on and slug down in the center field.
- 1:41:09Well he may talk to his wife.
- 1:41:21Down in the bullpen left hander young Pete Rickard is going for Los Angeles.
- 1:41:27He was mentioned as one of the possible starters in tomorrow's game down at Dodger State even Los Angeles.
- 1:41:33However three names were given us Williams Rickard from Drysdale.
- 1:41:35After all that will be going all out to try to stand the tide here and get his ball club into the World Series.
- 1:41:45Rose Park the plate swings on the pitch and it's a long fly ball deep to right field.
- 1:41:49Alou is drifting back under.
- 1:41:51Easily takes it into the out.
- 1:41:54All 28 innings now for the LA Dodgers without picking up a round.
- 1:41:59They go quietly here and this one's nothing to cross.
- 1:42:02I'm just going to end up fixing a half an inch of play now.
- 1:42:06It is the giant fly.
- 1:42:08The Dodgers have nothing.
- 1:42:10And we'll move along here now into the last half of inning number seven.
- 1:42:15Means we'll be taking a look at Philly Pierce.
- 1:42:18He'll be the first man up.
- 1:42:20We expected to see Pierce in the last half of the sixth inning but they gone struck out into a double play.
- 1:42:25Well it appears that's a round of applause as he steps up to the plate.
- 1:42:33Philly has put up twice, has hit a ball out of the infield.
- 1:42:36He's rolled a second and tapped back to the mile.
- 1:42:39This is over two.
- 1:42:43Smith pitches to him and there's a bounding ball off of a left-foot plate foul.
- 1:42:47Sandy Kofax began this ball game and lasted one inning and pitched the two men in the second inning.
- 1:42:52Davenport and Philly in was derried down of there for Roblox who went to next four.
- 1:42:57The pitch at the plate runs a count to one ball one strike.
- 1:43:03Sherry came on and pitched one third of an inning.
- 1:43:06Gave up two runs and three hits.
- 1:43:11The pitch swung on by Pearson, Missus, four strikes to the one ball two strikes.
- 1:43:15And Jack Smith was called upon in the sixth inning to put out the fire.
- 1:43:19He's out there pitching now.
- 1:43:22Right-hander throws a curve ball to the left hand hitter and Philly fouls it away.
- 1:43:26John stays one ball and two strikes.
- 1:43:31The defense on the inside for the Dodgers this afternoon has walls at first base.
- 1:43:36Gilliam at second. Will's at shortstop and Andy Carrion third.
- 1:43:41Smith's fast ball was outside.
- 1:43:44John has two balls and two strikes now on Philly first.
- 1:43:46Not in left field, John Davis, Willie Davis in center.
- 1:43:51Got a right field, Frank Howard.
- 1:43:53Smith works the plate to an overhand fast ball and here's strikeout.
- 1:44:00Well for young Phap, that's a second strikeout.
- 1:44:04Roblox had a pair of strikeouts.
- 1:44:07Only four times have gone down with a strikeout route here this afternoon.
- 1:44:10Coming up to the plate, not believed off man.
- 1:44:12Starting the fourth batting go round for the Giants, Harvey Key.
- 1:44:17He's gone headless today in three times up.
- 1:44:19He's slide to right. He's struck out and he's rolled out to the third baseman.
- 1:44:28Smith delivers an overhand fast ball and that's inside right off the chin point.
- 1:44:33One ball, no strikeouts.
- 1:44:34We're in the last half of the seventh here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 1:44:42Good shaded inside. Two ball, no strikeout.
- 1:44:48NBC Sports Microphones bringing you all of the action from a crowded ballpark here this afternoon.
- 1:44:55And we'll be doing the same tomorrow from Dr. Town in Los Angeles.
- 1:44:58Four home runs slammed here by the Giants power.
- 1:45:06There's a fast ball ripped across the carpet shortstop.
- 1:45:09Gilliam digs it out of the dirt, makes his play to first in plenty of time and that's all for Harvey Key.
- 1:45:15Two down here in the bottom of the seventh inning and the batter coming up now is Chuck Killer.
- 1:45:19Killer today came up in the first inning and fouled out to third baseman Kerry.
- 1:45:27Then he, since that time, has slide out twice to center field to Willie Davis.
- 1:45:34And the outfield bringing him straight away and not too deep.
- 1:45:37There's a slight wind kick up now coming out of left field.
- 1:45:40Mitch is hung on. There's a line shot to center field for the base wrap.
- 1:45:42Davis up with it, fires it back in to Gilliam and with two outs Killer is single to center.
- 1:45:50That will be it. Number one off Smith.
- 1:45:54Number nine for Tampa City Goals.
- 1:46:02Billy Pallew is the best one.
- 1:46:03Right fielder has doubled and rolled third and fouled out to first base and has scored one run.
- 1:46:12Swings on this pitch, the high popper into very short left field.
- 1:46:17Back post Murray wills the shortstop. He's got it.
- 1:46:20So that's all there is to the last half of any number seven and in the seventh go round.
- 1:46:25There was one base hit. There was a man left on. That will be the fourth left on for the Giants in going bat seven times.
- 1:46:31And scored the end of seven innings of play.
- 1:46:34The Giants five and the Los Angeles Dozers have nothing.
- 1:46:39They first man up here in the top half of the eighth inning will be Andy Kerry.
- 1:46:44He represents the start of the last third of the batting order.
- 1:46:48For Los Angeles he owns one of the two base hits. Billy Pierce was coughed up here this afternoon.
- 1:46:54I tell you this guy from Detroit has been tough.
- 1:46:56Andy Kerry hitting right handed.
- 1:47:00Kerry singled up the middle back in the third inning. Struck out a second time up. That was in the fifth.
- 1:47:07Pierce takes it on from Bailey who has gone all the way behind the plate with him.
- 1:47:12Herball, flipped in and over like one.
- 1:47:15Ortega is throwing down in the bullpen again for Los Angeles which leads us to believe that they'll hit for Smith.
- 1:47:18Here in the seventh inning. The pitch outside. One ball, one strike.
- 1:47:26The doctors have gone the seven scoreless innings today having been shot out so far on two hits by Billy Pierce.
- 1:47:32And 28 innings they have gone scoreless in play. The pitch is outside.
- 1:47:37Kerry has gone out of the right to two balls and one strike.
- 1:47:39Jaco Connell working to play here this afternoon.
- 1:47:50There's the two one pitch.
- 1:47:53And a fast ball and swung on and popped up back to the first base.
- 1:47:56The play does goes back on and it's a good one.
- 1:47:58There's the two one pitch. And a fast ball and swung on and popped up back to the first base.
- 1:48:09The play does goes back on and they grab and right field near the line and all the time.
- 1:48:13Kerry is out of there.
- 1:48:17Takes him one for three this afternoon.
- 1:48:20And we're moving along here in the top half of the eighth inning.
- 1:48:23Willie Davis is the batter.
- 1:48:25Davis hit the ball well in the third inning but hit a line shot to Harvey Keen in left field.
- 1:48:31Then in the sixth inning she rolled out the first baseman, Sopeta.
- 1:48:34Davis is over two.
- 1:48:37The Dodger bats have been strangely quiet for the past about a week or so.
- 1:48:41Kerbal is Japanese for strike.
- 1:48:56There's Crank's up and serve the pitch and it's swung on and looked it back over the screen into the top.
- 1:49:02Looks like two.
- 1:49:04It's hard to believe actually when you start to think about it.
- 1:49:07That is late as August the ninth.
- 1:49:11Los Angeles was five and a half games out in front of the East San Francisco Giants.
- 1:49:17And on September the 22nd the Giants were four back and had eight to play.
- 1:49:23It's called break three right down the line.
- 1:49:28Davis is out of there.
- 1:49:29Crank got number five with Pierce.
- 1:49:37Of course the Los Angeles Dodgers have dropped some very crucial ball games.
- 1:49:44Namely two St. Louis, both at down that St. Louis and at Dodger Town.
- 1:49:50That's the way this great game of baseball goes.
- 1:49:54That's what makes it the great game it is.
- 1:49:56You never know what's going to happen tomorrow or to be tomorrow after that.
- 1:50:03You're going to have a pinch hitter up there now going for Smith.
- 1:50:09It's Doug Camille right hand hitting catcher.
- 1:50:15Remember having seen his daddy play much fine ball at first base in the national league.
- 1:50:20Doug Camille makes high.
- 1:50:21Smith makes the top of the ball no strikes to the young dog.
- 1:50:27He's been trying to catching duties with Roseboro.
- 1:50:38He's appeared in 42 ball games for the Dodgers this year and hitting a 271 right now.
- 1:50:46Four home runs and 22 runs batted in.
- 1:50:48Takes a lot of pitch on the outside that's ball three.
- 1:50:57Doug Camille batting for Smith.
- 1:51:03Pierce was pitch right across the middle.
- 1:51:06Three balls one strike.
- 1:51:11Down in the bullpen, Ortega has been throwing it.
- 1:51:14But this ball will be he coming on to pitching the last half of the eighth inning.
- 1:51:16Pierce delivers.
- 1:51:18Camille takes that ball and that's in at the strike two.
- 1:51:22But has some activity down the bullpen also for the Giants.
- 1:51:28John Larson right hander up starting to throw.
- 1:51:32Along with the two mothers.
- 1:51:35Pierce delivers three two.
- 1:51:37Camille swings and puts it back down almost under our hand reaching like a ball.
- 1:51:40Three balls and two strikes.
- 1:51:50Alchemist climbs back in waiting for the next three two-pitch.
- 1:52:01There's that three two-pitch.
- 1:52:03Bob Lane right back off the mast of the late Emperor Jack O'Connor.
- 1:52:07Three balls two strikes.
- 1:52:12There are two outs here in the top half of the eighth inning.
- 1:52:15The bases are empty.
- 1:52:17Young Doug Camille, son of Doug Camille after batting for the LA Dodgers.
- 1:52:21Heading for pitcher Jack Smith.
- 1:52:37On comes a pitch and young Doug Zachary can wrap her file down the third base side.
- 1:52:45New ball in play to Billy Pierce.
- 1:52:47Don Larson and Stu Miller continue to crank up down in the Giants bullpen just in case Billy Pierce could falter here in the late stages.
- 1:52:56Phil Artega just about threw warming up down in the bullpen for LA.
- 1:53:00Fastball, Camille after hits a line shot up the alley in left center field.
- 1:53:04I think that's going to be in there.
- 1:53:06It's up against the fence as well he may have grabbed it.
- 1:53:08There goes Camille.
- 1:53:10It's a stand up two-bagger for young Phala.
- 1:53:11Doug Camille, son of Doug Camille after hits a line shot up the alley in left center field.
- 1:53:19That will be hit number three of fierce.
- 1:53:23Now the batter coming up will be Mari Will.
- 1:53:29You may be the runner at second with two outs here in the top half of the eighth inning.
- 1:53:34Will is just coming up for his fourth at bat.
- 1:53:37Twice he has popped the shortstop once he has flagged a right.
- 1:53:41At game time he was batting at 2.99.
- 1:53:53Mari Will is a switcher batting right handed against this lapander.
- 1:53:56Takes a cut at this pitch and grounds with the shortstop.
- 1:53:58Macon digs it out, makes his play in five and then he goes out.
- 1:54:08No round, one hit.
- 1:54:10Camille's venture double.
- 1:54:12He was the runner left on at second base.
- 1:54:15And the score at the end of seven and one half innings of play remains the Giants five.
- 1:54:20The Dodgers nothing.
- 1:54:22Now a message from our sponsor.
- 1:54:23Get together with a pair of slits.
- 1:54:31A friendly glass of slip.
- 1:54:33A little quick find and just a kiss and a half.
- 1:54:38Two points real just going to every drop of the roll.
- 1:54:43Get together with a pair of slip.
- 1:54:45A glass of slip that breaks like a tear from a slip.
- 1:54:59Get that real just a lonely slip and cut from the creamy white collar.
- 1:55:05To the very last drop.
- 1:55:07Now let's get together with a glass of slip.
- 1:55:11A friendly glass of slip.
- 1:55:13Real just going to break like a tear.
- 1:55:19Slits, the beer that made Milwaukee famous simply because it tastes so good.
- 1:55:24The Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, Milwaukee and other cities.
- 1:55:27There's got to be still more fingers.
- 1:55:29As we move into the last half day, depending here at Candlestick in San Francisco,
- 1:55:43we have a new pitcher for the LA Dodgers.
- 1:55:45A tall skinny right hander.
- 1:55:50It's coming up to take over.
- 1:55:53He's Phil Ortega from Mesa, Arizona, 6'2 and weighs about 165 for 70 pounds.
- 1:56:01Phil Ortega was with the Spokane last year and also with the Dodgers
- 1:56:07and we'll find out some this year.
- 1:56:12He'll be appearing in his 24th ball game and he's got a pretty tough customer to face here
- 1:56:17in the last half of the eighth inning.
- 1:56:19I'll give you just one guess as to who that fella is.
- 1:56:21Willie Mays.
- 1:56:24Ortega has not won a ball game this year for the Dodgers.
- 1:56:30He's lost two.
- 1:56:32He delivers to Willie Mays and the curve is low inside the ball one.
- 1:56:35Ortega has no record of any time with the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:56:43Big gangly thumb that delivers a soft curve low to Willie Mays.
- 1:56:47That's ball two.
- 1:56:48Ortega throws his elbows and arms and feet around and suddenly out of that pretzel
- 1:56:55twist comes the ball to the plate.
- 1:57:00Now he starts his motion.
- 1:57:02Comes down to over the fastball and I tie inside.
- 1:57:05That's ball three.
- 1:57:11This is pitcher number five to be used by Walder Alston here this afternoon.
- 1:57:15Coltback started it.
- 1:57:18Robux, Sherry, Smith and now Ortega.
- 1:57:20He gets a strike in this time as Willie had to take on the count of three one.
- 1:57:25Following Mays will be Sopeta and then we'll have Davenport.
- 1:57:29This has been the part of the batting order that is called the damage on the Dodger pitching here this afternoon.
- 1:57:37Ortega works three one and they pitch his high inside ball four.
- 1:57:40Ole Mays fires the heart hat away and moves off the first base.
- 1:57:46That's first base one ball is given up by Ortega and the second base on ball is down to pick up.
- 1:57:54Now here is Sopeta.
- 1:57:56Sopeta rolled out the first base to retire the side in the first inning.
- 1:57:59He forced Mays and the second base to retire the side in the third and then he came back and hit his 35th home run of solo up there in the sixth inning.
- 1:58:10Ortega delivers, they pitch his strong on there.
- 1:58:13He's on a high drive into center field.
- 1:58:16Willie Davis ought to be able to get this one.
- 1:58:19He does.
- 1:58:21Willie Mays goes back to first base.
- 1:58:23Sopeta is off.
- 1:58:25One away in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:58:26Obviously Giants are hoping that this will be the last nine they'll have to come up.
- 1:58:31They're leading it five to nothing on nine base hits.
- 1:58:34Four of which have been home run.
- 1:58:39Five for extra base blows.
- 1:58:42Counting in the double hit by Philly Pellew in the first inning.
- 1:58:45Jim Davenport has had two hits in three times up.
- 1:58:50Had a solo home run in the second inning in his 14th of the year.
- 1:58:53And then a single in the sixth of the left field.
- 1:58:58There's a throw to first.
- 1:59:00Mays back ahead of him.
- 1:59:03Ortega with one out working with Davenport in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:59:07The pitch says Mays breaks those and the second he's fielding.
- 1:59:12Ah, Willie Mays.
- 1:59:13Willie Mays field.
- 1:59:26Willie Mays leads the San Francisco Giants in the stealing department.
- 1:59:30That was his 19th.
- 1:59:32Nineteenth steal.
- 1:59:34They have 76 of them.
- 1:59:35Got his one ball no strikes on Davenport.
- 1:59:42Jim looks at this pitch and that's well outside.
- 1:59:45That's ball two.
- 1:59:50Two balls no strikes.
- 1:59:57Davenport waggling that wood back and forth.
- 2:00:00Willie Mays leads down a second base.
- 2:00:01Ortega delivers soft curve ball and way out in front of it goes Davenport and misses it.
- 2:00:06Strike one.
- 2:00:19Ortega back to visit the Rosenberg.
- 2:00:22Ron Peronowski still cranking up down in the LA Bullpen.
- 2:00:27He's about ready.
- 2:00:28He should manage the ball.
- 2:00:29He's about ready.
- 2:00:30He should manage the ball.
- 2:00:34Willie Mays at second base having walked still in second is 19th steal of the year.
- 2:00:39Down comes the pitch.
- 2:00:41Davenport ignores that the pitch is low.
- 2:00:43Ball three.
- 2:00:45Three balls and one strike.
- 2:00:52In San Francisco bats this afternoon have really been rattling that ball around the stadium.
- 2:00:56Bitch high inside ball four.
- 2:01:01Bill Ortega has a plate swinging on him as he walks through men here in the eighth inning.
- 2:01:06In between the two walks he's got the fate of the club center.
- 2:01:10Don is called and Leo DeRoch is coming out.
- 2:01:14I mean if we're going to have Peronowski.
- 2:01:19Please, Peronowski is going to be called into the Bullpen right now.
- 2:01:22Don O'Felley makes a motion down to the Bullpen and Dusty Boggess, the umpire for space, walks on out toward the Bullpen and says to Peronowski, come on you're in the ball game.
- 2:01:33He's appearing in his 68th ball game this year for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:01:38And while he makes that long walk around the Bullpen back off the right field, a message from our sponsor.
- 2:02:08We're just going to every drop.
- 2:02:11So let's get together with a fly-up-duck-slip.
- 2:02:15Perfect like ear from shit.
- 2:02:28That real custo-lake-slip has got from the creamy white collar.
- 2:02:34Through the very last drop.
- 2:02:36Now let's get together with a clap-up-slip.
- 2:02:41A friendly clap-up-slip.
- 2:02:44We're just going to great life and peace.
- 2:02:49Schlitz, the beer that made Milwaukee famous simply because it tastes so good.
- 2:02:54The Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, Milwaukee and other cities.
- 2:02:57Ron Peronowski has just completed his warmer pitches now.
- 2:03:03He's ready to go to Ed Bailey.
- 2:03:06He was called in to fish to Bay Lane with one out and two men on.
- 2:03:13So the two men on, Mays at the second, Davenport at first out of the responsive melody of Phil Ortega who has now left the ball game after having fixed one and third of an inning.
- 2:03:24Ron Peronowski with a record of 6-6 this year with the league and one-on-one with the San Francisco Giants.
- 2:03:33The left-hander comes set.
- 2:03:35Deliverers to a left-handed batter and a pitches low for ball one.
- 2:03:38Peronowski appearing in his 68th ball game.
- 2:03:41He's fixed 105 in a third innings.
- 2:03:44Has an earned run average of 2.82.
- 2:03:46Strikeout record of 67.
- 2:03:54He's started no ball games.
- 2:03:58Pitch as well to Bay Lane.
- 2:04:00Nice ball two.
- 2:04:04So Peronowski has been relieved, has been used in relief.
- 2:04:08He's been the left-handed relief artist for Los Angeles.
- 2:04:11Setting a record for a left-handed relief pitcher for them.
- 2:04:17Ed Bailey waggles that bat back and forth.
- 2:04:20Runners the first and second one out.
- 2:04:22Pitch the plate, fast ball in there for the strikeout.
- 2:04:34Bailey waiting patiently.
- 2:04:36Humps the batting.
- 2:04:37He's got a good batting.
- 2:04:41Mays leads the second base now as Peronowski comes set.
- 2:04:44Serves up a big curve ball that snaps off low and outside.
- 2:04:57The board here, candlestick box says ball three strike one.
- 2:05:02Peronowski serves with that third.
- 2:05:03Ball four.
- 2:05:07The bases have been loaded.
- 2:05:10Two pitchers have appeared here in the last half of the evening.
- 2:05:14This walk of course is Peronowski's.
- 2:05:17The two runners, Mays who had just moved over the third on that walk.
- 2:05:22Davenport who moved the second on the responsibility of the not-apart of Ortega.
- 2:05:28And Bailey of course is the responsibility of Peronowski.
- 2:05:30The number eight hitter in the order.
- 2:05:33Jose Pagdan who had gone over two is up there.
- 2:05:37He struck out in the fourth inning and struck out into a double play in the sixth inning.
- 2:05:42And had a sacrifice in the second.
- 2:05:47The bases are loaded.
- 2:05:49The pitchers hung on.
- 2:05:51Rear hold in the center field.
- 2:05:53Coming on for that ball.
- 2:05:55Here comes two runners in the score.
- 2:05:57And winding up at second is Pagdan.
- 2:06:01And the ball gets away from our will.
- 2:06:04He moves on into third as another run score.
- 2:06:12That throw that came in from center field after Jackson passed David.
- 2:06:18Howard went over and picked the ball up and wheeled it in.
- 2:06:21And Maury Wills went charging in the second base.
- 2:06:22And I believe was hit in the head or the shoulder by the thrown ball.
- 2:06:37Right now Maury Wills is getting up.
- 2:06:40The trainer is after what minister joined.
- 2:06:42Apparently he's all right.
- 2:06:43The ball passed and hit him in the head.
- 2:06:54What three runs of compiling in here to score.
- 2:06:56And it's now eight to nothing in favor of the San Francisco John.
- 2:06:59Up to the plate here at Kendall St. Clark comes Billy Pierce.
- 2:07:04Pagdan in third base.
- 2:07:06The pitch is low and outside the ball went.
- 2:07:09Infield is pulled up of course with only one out here.
- 2:07:21Down comes the pitch to Pierce and he bluffs the bun.
- 2:07:24Takes the pitch in there for the strike and he got his one ball and one strike on it.
- 2:07:27Jose Pocca on that third base.
- 2:07:29He's credited with a double taking third on the throw that was fired in to shortstop.
- 2:07:39Three runs of compiling across the plate and it's eight to nothing.
- 2:07:43Favor of the San Francisco John pitches hit down to shortstop.
- 2:07:47Wills up with the drives runner back to third.
- 2:07:48Grows the first base in time and cares about.
- 2:08:06Harvey King coming up to the plate now.
- 2:08:08Starting the fifth batting around for the Giants.
- 2:08:11They have eight runs on ten hits.
- 2:08:12The Dodgers no runs on three hits and either side has committed an error.
- 2:08:19Peronowski delivers the curve ball is outside and high.
- 2:08:28Small one.
- 2:08:30Gold the run scoring here in the inning belonged to Ortega.
- 2:08:36The other one belongs to Peronowski.
- 2:08:38The runner with third is his responsibility also.
- 2:08:45Curve ball good for the strike.
- 2:08:47Harvey King's down one ball one strike.
- 2:08:50These two ball clubs for their years worked leveled it off at nine a piece.
- 2:08:57The one one pitches in the side across the knee to count us two balls in one strike now to Harvey King.
- 2:09:03Big record continues to throw down in the bullpen for Los Angeles.
- 2:09:08Peronowski works the pitches swing on and hit out in the right field Frank Howard off.
- 2:09:17He's right should have it.
- 2:09:19He does have it and the inning is over.
- 2:09:21That's all here in the eighth inning but it was another big one for the San Francisco ball club.
- 2:09:27They picked up a turtle of three big runs in the inning.
- 2:09:29There was but one hit there were three walks.
- 2:09:33There were no errors and there was a man left off.
- 2:09:36So the score at the end of eight full innings of play now it is the Giants eight and the Los Angeles Dodgers have nothing.
- 2:09:52Didn't get him up at the plate here and they've half-halfed the ninth inning.
- 2:09:55Looks at the first pitch and it's in there for the strike.
- 2:09:59Gilliam is open to this afternoon and has walked one time.
- 2:10:05Takes it outside this time and the count is one ball one strike.
- 2:10:09If you're keeping score with us we'd like you to make a correction as we have on our score sheet.
- 2:10:15The official score has just informed us that an error is being charged to right fielder Howard.
- 2:10:21The pitch is over to Gilliam to strike two.
- 2:10:23For his throw from the outfield in the bottom of the eighth inning which allowed McDon to go on into third base.
- 2:10:36So have one error charged against Howard and the Dodgers in this ball game.
- 2:10:42The pitch is played to Gilliam as well and he's got his two balls and two strikes.
- 2:10:45Two balls and two strikes on Jim Gilliam leading things off here in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:10:54First works a fast ball and Gilliam slams it down to shortstop.
- 2:10:57McDonough still is left up with a nice big throw on the first base.
- 2:11:03Oh Gilliam is out of there on a six three count.
- 2:11:05So if you are keeping score with us this afternoon in the last half of the eighth inning make your totals read three runs on one base hit.
- 2:11:17One error and one man left on.
- 2:11:23The top of the ninth inning went off, nobody on and here is Tommy Davis.
- 2:11:28He chops a pitch and doesn't get it.
- 2:11:31Strike one.
- 2:11:32This pass has been tough this afternoon.
- 2:11:35He's given up three hits.
- 2:11:42Her ball levels the count off but a ball and a strike.
- 2:11:47There has been one extra base blow hit off Billy Pierce all afternoon.
- 2:11:51That was Doug Camilli's pinch hit double to left center when he hit for the pitcher in the eighth inning.
- 2:11:58Pierce wheels it in there and the pitch is low.
- 2:12:00That's ball two.
- 2:12:02Two balls and one strike.
- 2:12:05One away top of the ninth inning.
- 2:12:08Eight runs ten hits.
- 2:12:11And no errors for San Francisco.
- 2:12:14They have five.
- 2:12:16The Dodgers have stranded four so far.
- 2:12:18Overhand breaking stuff is high on outside.
- 2:12:20So the count is three balls and one strike now on Tommy Davis.
- 2:12:37Davis signing just off the plate.
- 2:12:40Pierce comes to him with a change up and it's slammed out into a very shallow center field.
- 2:12:45Willie May is coming on for it.
- 2:12:47He's under it now.
- 2:12:48He's still out.
- 2:12:50That's half of the ninth inning.
- 2:12:53The ball coming up now will be outward.
- 2:12:57This is the fellow who was charged with the throwing error.
- 2:13:01Bowling pick on after his double to move into third base.
- 2:13:07So bounced up and hit Mar-Wills in the head.
- 2:13:12But no damage was done.
- 2:13:14The young fellow was able to weather the storm.
- 2:13:15Here's the pitch to Howard.
- 2:13:18Fastball in there for the strike.
- 2:13:21Frank Howard has went up three times, struck out twice and caught the shortstop.
- 2:13:25He was hitting a 301 at game time.
- 2:13:28Pierce delivers aim, soft curve, inside.
- 2:13:31One ball, one strike.
- 2:13:33So Pierce is just one out of way now.
- 2:13:36I'm hanging up a shutout.
- 2:13:38And this is first of the playoff games for the 1962 National League championship.
- 2:13:46Pierce has pitched a fine ball game today.
- 2:13:48Delivers Howard takes in there for the strike.
- 2:14:09There starts his pumping motion.
- 2:14:11The ball comes in, destroyed left-hander, pitches, makes three.
- 2:14:19Had him on a fastball.
- 2:14:21That's it.
- 2:14:26Billy Pierce has been loved by his team-mates as he comes off the field.
- 2:14:30He ends up six strikeouts here this afternoon.
- 2:14:32And here are your final totals for the San Francisco victory.
- 2:14:41Eight runs on ten hits.
- 2:14:44They committed no errors and stranded five here this afternoon.
- 2:14:48And for the LA Dodgers who have now gone 30 innings without scoring.
- 2:14:54Los Angeles no runs but three base hits, two singles and a double off Billy Pierce.
- 2:14:58They committed one error, charged to right-fielder Frank Howard on a throw to the infield.
- 2:15:04And they had four men left on.
- 2:15:06The winning pitcher, of course, is Pierce going all the way to pick up that shutout win.
- 2:15:11This was his third start this year against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:15:18The losing pitcher is the starting pitcher Sandy Kofax.
- 2:15:22Sandy had a 14-6 record when he started today's ball game.
- 2:15:26And he was 2-0 with the San Francisco Giants, two wins and no losses.
- 2:15:31But he was out of there quickly in the second inning.
- 2:15:34He had given up at that time three runs on four hits.
- 2:15:38And manager Austin relieved him with steady-eighty robot.
- 2:15:42Robot pitched to next four, Sherry came on then in relief of robot and pitched to third.
- 2:15:47Jack Smith was the next pitcher on tap and he went one and two-thirds.
- 2:15:50Ortega came along then in the eighth inning and pitched only one-third of it.
- 2:15:56And Peronowski had to come in to relieve him and get the side out.
- 2:16:01So he pitched two-thirds of an inning.
- 2:16:03So six men were on the mound here this afternoon for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:16:08And when next they meet the San Francisco Giants, it will be tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock here on the coast at the Dodger Town in Los Angeles.
- 2:16:16And of course we'll be with you at the 12.45 to bring you all of the pregame activities.
- 2:16:22The final score again here for San Francisco to take the first game, all the best out of three series, played at three.
- 2:16:29It's San Francisco eight runs, ten hits, no errors, five left.
- 2:16:33Los Angeles no runs, three hits, one error, four left.
- 2:16:37The winning pitcher, Billy Pierce all the way for the shutout.
- 2:16:40The losing pitcher, Sandy Copac.
- 2:16:41Well, our express thanks this afternoon to our engineer, Don Hall, from NBC and our NBC producer, Mr. Hal Ashby.

- 2:17:24I stopped towards the sun come up and it took most of the day.

- 2:17:50I'm doing my GM dealer service department for my car's full guardian maintenance checkup.
- 2:17:55Will you sure take good care of that car?
- 2:17:58Well, a car represents a large investment.
- 2:17:59It pays to take care of it.
- 2:18:02And the trained technicians at my GM dealers are best qualified to service a GM car or truck.
- 2:18:08They have special knowledge, tools and parts to do the best job at a fair price.
- 2:18:13Well, you care thus for more than that.
- 2:18:16This is Raymond Burr speaking for the U.S. Public Health Service.
- 2:18:19I want to tell you something quite honestly.
- 2:18:22Living is a very important thing to me and I have a hunch.
- 2:18:24Living is just as important to you and your family.
- 2:18:29With that in mind, I suggest, no, I urge you to install seatbelts in your family car.
- 2:18:35Scientific research both in the laboratory and on the highway
- 2:18:40prove that in an automobile accident, the seatbelt offers protection from death or injury.
- 2:18:46It's not a point of argument. It's a matter of fact.
- 2:18:48The seatbelt is the most effective single item of safety equipment presently available.
- 2:18:54It will reduce the toll of traffic injury and death.
- 2:18:58Now, doesn't it make sense to install seatbelts in your family car?
- 2:19:02Doesn't it make sense to use them?
