Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, brother? It's Sean Mackin from Yellowcard. We got
- 0:03Speaker 1: the new deluxe version of Better Days available now. Thanks
- 0:06Speaker 1: for having me.
- 0:08Speaker 2: No worries, Sean. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Yeah, man. My pleasure.
- 0:12Speaker 2: So as you say, bro, Yellowcard today released the deluxe
- 0:16Speaker 2: version of your 2025 album, Better Days. So how are
- 0:19Speaker 2: you feeling, man? It must be a busy period for
- 0:21Speaker 2: you right now.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Couldn't be happier. Greatest time for Yellowcard ever. Um, People
- 0:30Speaker 1: loving our band, loving the violin. Us as musicians, as friends,
- 0:36Speaker 1: are getting along better than ever. We've been to Australia
- 0:40Speaker 1: multiple times in the last 12 months. So again, it's just,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I mean, I couldn't really complain about something. If I did,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I don't know if anyone would listen, but things are
- 0:51Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Cheers, man. Better Days, the original album, was a massive
- 0:57Speaker 2: success for the band, man, obviously. Is a deluxe version
- 1:00Speaker 2: a byproduct of that or is it always going to happen?
- 1:04Speaker 1: I think what happens in this Yellow Card timeline is
- 1:08Speaker 1: when we open the floodgates after seven years of not
- 1:12Speaker 1: being a band and bearing the pain of losing your
- 1:17Speaker 1: first love and your first business, once you open that
- 1:20Speaker 1: back up, I think you know, you get more than
- 1:24Speaker 1: you think, right? You got, you got to peel back
- 1:28Speaker 1: the layers and the, the sorrow and the pain and
- 1:32Speaker 1: the love and the life. And so much happens, you know, we,
- 1:36Speaker 1: we forget that as the days go by, sometimes they
- 1:40Speaker 1: feel slow, but over the years, so much happens and
- 1:45Speaker 1: we wrote more material than one record. So we wanted
- 1:48Speaker 1: to make sure that if you're a real yellow card
- 1:51Speaker 1: fan and you love our band and you want to,
- 1:54Speaker 1: you know, see what that feels like, or, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 1: see what we were going through. We wrote more than the,
- 1:59Speaker 1: you know, the first original 10 songs for better days. And,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and we want people to, you know, if they're, they
- 2:04Speaker 1: want to, we're in a consumption place in music and
- 2:08Speaker 1: content and everything. And so we're going to make sure
- 2:10Speaker 1: that our fans know that we love them and, and
- 2:13Speaker 1: give them a, a peek inside and see what the
- 2:16Speaker 1: yellow card machine has cooking up. And we put out the,
- 2:19Speaker 1: what we thought was the best product. And over the
- 2:22Speaker 1: last year we kept refining it. We want to make
- 2:24Speaker 1: sure that you guys had everything that we had. So that's,
- 2:28Speaker 1: that's what this deluxe is all about. Yeah. Nice.
- 2:31Speaker 2: That album had like over 65 million streams and earned
- 2:34Speaker 2: yellow card. Your first number one for Emma. So someone
- 2:38Speaker 2: who was involved with making it, like why the hell
- 2:41Speaker 2: was it so popular?
- 2:45Speaker 1: I don't know. I've been asking, I want all of
- 2:47Speaker 1: our other records to be popular. I mean, maybe Travis
- 2:52Speaker 1: Barker had something to do with it. I don't know. So, yeah,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I think, you know, if you ask me, you know, the,
- 3:01Speaker 1: the hard work and the luck and the right time
- 3:03Speaker 1: and the right place. And there's a 20 year reunion
- 3:07Speaker 1: of ocean Avenue mixed in with, you know, the reuniting
- 3:11Speaker 1: of the band and, and people, people, you know, after
- 3:15Speaker 1: the coronavirus, you know, pandemic, wanting to go back and
- 3:19Speaker 1: see some music and feel alive. I think there's enough
- 3:22Speaker 1: reason right there for us all to get together and celebrate.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So I'm just happy that, you know, we were able
- 3:30Speaker 1: to celebrate, you know, the history of our band together after,
- 3:34Speaker 1: you know, what we've been through, the ups and the downs.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And on the backside of that came Better Days. And,
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know, what a perfect time you know, title track to,
- 3:44Speaker 1: to get it started. And, and like you had mentioned,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you know, not only one, but, but two number one
- 3:49Speaker 1: songs and millions of listens. And again, just a heart
- 3:53Speaker 1: full of gratitude and love.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Take us back to like, as a band, you'd finished
- 3:57Speaker 2: recording it. It was all sort of ready coming out.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Like you obviously were happy with it, but did you
- 4:03Speaker 2: have any inkling that it was going to be that
- 4:05Speaker 2: special to people?
- 4:07Speaker 1: No, not a chance. And that never happens. And, I
- 4:11Speaker 1: don't think I'm the best barometer for character of music.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I still listen to some of the same things I
- 4:20Speaker 1: was listening to when we were driving the van and
- 4:24Speaker 1: trying to make it in the early Ocean Avenue days.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I love when the album's done and it's not out
- 4:32Speaker 1: for mass consumption and I'm in this safety bubble of like,
- 4:37Speaker 1: this is my little precious album. And I knew that
- 4:41Speaker 1: it was great. And I knew that it felt very
- 4:44Speaker 1: much kind of like 2003. Like, I hope people like
- 4:48Speaker 1: this as much as I like it. And it felt
- 4:51Speaker 1: like a refined version of Yellow Card, but still very
- 4:53Speaker 1: authentic to us. And I can't, you know, thank our
- 4:57Speaker 1: fans enough for going out and getting it. And, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: every time I create something, I want it to feel
- 5:03Speaker 1: great and be great and be special for our fans.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But this was different. I think Travis had a lot
- 5:07Speaker 1: to do with it.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And today you're also releasing a single Hell With Me,
- 5:12Speaker 2: which is the band's second collaboration with Steve Aoki. So
- 5:16Speaker 2: tell us a bit more about that song and your
- 5:17Speaker 2: history with Steve.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know if he likes us more or
- 5:21Speaker 1: we like him more, but it's great working with him.
- 5:24Speaker 1: It's just one of those things where you have an
- 5:27Speaker 1: artist that reaches out and artistically is kind of in
- 5:32Speaker 1: the same place, just in a different, you know, multiverse.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And he's wants to be around music all the time.
- 5:39Speaker 1: He wants to be, he's focused on his performance. He's
- 5:42Speaker 1: focused on himself and, and he just reaches a different audience. He,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and we're a fan of what he does. And, um,
- 5:49Speaker 1: you know, he's a fan of us. And, and so
- 5:52Speaker 1: the original collaboration for his remix of ocean Avenue came
- 5:57Speaker 1: out with this song, uh, hell with me. And he
- 6:00Speaker 1: just showed us an idea that he had. And he
- 6:02Speaker 1: was like, Hey man, I don't know if this, make
- 6:05Speaker 1: sense for us or make sense for you, but I'd
- 6:07Speaker 1: love to work on this song. And we were sending
- 6:09Speaker 1: tracks back and forth and end up, you know, becoming
- 6:12Speaker 1: a real live song. So it's just an honor to
- 6:16Speaker 1: work with such a great artist and, you know, have
- 6:19Speaker 1: our fans and our friends that listen to Steve and
- 6:22Speaker 1: listen to Yellowcard and hopefully listen to a song that
- 6:25Speaker 1: kind of came out of that world together. But, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 1: it's not that farfetched that people listen to different genres
- 6:33Speaker 1: of music. It doesn't have to be one specific box
- 6:36Speaker 1: or style of music anymore. And I think you hear,
- 6:40Speaker 1: you know, both worlds in this song. Yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Nice. And there's a lot of electronic and heavy pop
- 6:46Speaker 2: elements prominent across the new tracks, especially on hell with me.
- 6:49Speaker 2: So what was the creative process like blending traditional violin
- 6:53Speaker 2: into an EDM sort of leaning soundscape? Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I mean, I think, you know, I have different colors
- 7:00Speaker 1: that I paint with, with the violin. I, you know, you,
- 7:05Speaker 1: I always thought that I was a lead guitar player
- 7:07Speaker 1: trapped in a violinist body and, and melody and harmony
- 7:11Speaker 1: and rhythm and counterpoint and all those things. It's just
- 7:14Speaker 1: nice to be able to do it, you know, with
- 7:16Speaker 1: a violin and, and, um, there, there's just a sound
- 7:20Speaker 1: that is authentic to yellow card, authentic to our fans.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think that's how they envision the violin. I don't, um,
- 7:27Speaker 1: I do a lot of different techniques and a lot
- 7:31Speaker 1: of different sounds, um, And sometimes it's too much where
- 7:36Speaker 1: it doesn't sound like a violin anymore, and that doesn't
- 7:38Speaker 1: really hit either. So we want to be able to
- 7:41Speaker 1: blend that genuine yellow card sound with any type of
- 7:47Speaker 1: sort of soundscape, and hopefully it feels genuinely like yellow card.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I think that's the universe that we want to play in. Ryan?
- 7:57Speaker 2: There's also the brand new version of Bedroom Posters featuring
- 8:01Speaker 2: Good Charlotte, which went gangbusters, man. How did that specific
- 8:04Speaker 2: collaboration come together? And what was it like reimagining that
- 8:07Speaker 2: track with those guys?
- 8:10Speaker 1: Well, we had the honor of playing in this faraway
- 8:15Speaker 1: land called Australia with our friends in Good Charlotte. And
- 8:18Speaker 1: it really just kind of came from being together and
- 8:21Speaker 1: being around our friends again. Um, we had talked about
- 8:24Speaker 1: releasing the song bedroom posters as a single to kind
- 8:29Speaker 1: of follow up with better days and the label, they
- 8:32Speaker 1: were very, um, set on, on that song. They're like,
- 8:37Speaker 1: it's streaming well, everyone sings it. We love it. We just,
- 8:41Speaker 1: we don't, we released it as a pre-release track. That
- 8:44Speaker 1: was one of the early tracks that were like, Hey,
- 8:46Speaker 1: check out, you know, what's going on. We did Honestly, I,
- 8:50Speaker 1: obviously the forbidden punk beat and cut time, tempo, Travis
- 8:55Speaker 1: doing his thing, violin in the intro, like it was
- 8:58Speaker 1: just a really nice, genuine start to the release of
- 9:01Speaker 1: the album. Better Days comes out, everyone loves it. And
- 9:04Speaker 1: so we just needed to do something different and special
- 9:08Speaker 1: and really lining up with the tour that we did
- 9:10Speaker 1: in Australia with Good Charlotte. We asked Joel, we said, hey,
- 9:14Speaker 1: Is there any world where you would like to sing
- 9:16Speaker 1: and collaborate on the song and kind of feature? We
- 9:18Speaker 1: really want to push this to the next level. And Joel,
- 9:22Speaker 1: I mean, in traditional Good Charlotte fashion, I don't know
- 9:25Speaker 1: if you've ever met those guys or if anyone ever
- 9:28Speaker 1: talks about how wonderful they are, but everything is true.
- 9:31Speaker 1: He jumped right on it. He sent us tracks. I mean,
- 9:34Speaker 1: it felt like it was the next day. It was
- 9:36Speaker 1: within the week. And he was genuinely excited. He put his...
- 9:41Speaker 1: His Joel Madden coolness, the art that he has and
- 9:47Speaker 1: the experience that he's had over the years, he added
- 9:50Speaker 1: that to our song and it really just took it
- 9:53Speaker 1: to the next place. And that's what music is supposed
- 9:58Speaker 1: to be like. That's what it was like. when we
- 10:00Speaker 1: were starting and we were doing tours together and we're
- 10:04Speaker 1: on Warped Tour and you're with your friends. And it
- 10:06Speaker 1: just felt like that again. And it might've been 2024,
- 10:09Speaker 1: but it felt like it was 2003. It's awesome. And
- 10:12Speaker 1: hats off to Joel for going above and beyond and
- 10:15Speaker 1: all the good Charlotte guys for taking care of us.
- 10:17Speaker 1: We're actually about to embark um they're taking us to
- 10:20Speaker 1: europe so we're gonna do some shows in november in
- 10:23Speaker 1: europe so it's just it's been a big global world
- 10:27Speaker 1: tour for us and them and and again hats off
- 10:30Speaker 1: to to joel for making something that we care about
- 10:33Speaker 1: special yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Very nice man and The original Better Days album already
- 10:38Speaker 2: featured massive names like Avril Lavigne and Matt Skiba, but
- 10:41Speaker 2: on the Deluxe one, you've got an expanded roster of
- 10:44Speaker 2: guest artists. How do you feel that those diverse external
- 10:48Speaker 2: voices helped reshape the overarching story of Yellow Vaxx, sorry,
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yellow Vaxx Comeback era?
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, you know, how to explain the
- 10:59Speaker 1: highs of the Better Days and the Better Days Deluxe
- 11:02Speaker 1: and all of the collaborations. we have such amazing friends
- 11:06Speaker 1: in the music business and in our, the older era
- 11:10Speaker 1: of yellow card, we hadn't been able to really capitalize
- 11:16Speaker 1: on collaborations with our friends. And, and I say capitalize
- 11:21Speaker 1: because it's, it's always felt like a missed opportunity where,
- 11:25Speaker 1: you know, we couldn't get in the studio at the
- 11:28Speaker 1: same time, or, you know, there was a, a label
- 11:31Speaker 1: that intervened and said, Hey, maybe this isn't the right
- 11:33Speaker 1: look for us right now or whatever. And again, I
- 11:37Speaker 1: don't know if it's just the presence of Travis and
- 11:41Speaker 1: blink 182 and, you know, Hey, we, we tell people
- 11:45Speaker 1: it's Sean from yellow card. We'd love for you to
- 11:47Speaker 1: sing on our record. And before it was like a
- 11:50Speaker 1: him and a ha. And now it's like, Oh, are
- 11:52Speaker 1: you doing that record with Travis? We'd love to, you know,
- 11:54Speaker 1: I mean, it's, it's great. Whatever, whatever the reason is,
- 11:57Speaker 1: is it happened? And it feels special. I mean, like
- 12:01Speaker 1: you had mentioned the song with Avril Lavigne, like it just,
- 12:04Speaker 1: she is a star and she just adds so much
- 12:08Speaker 1: to that song. And I've been a closet, not a closet,
- 12:12Speaker 1: but an outwardly outlying trio fan for, you know, most
- 12:16Speaker 1: of my life and, you know, good Charlotte. And, and again,
- 12:20Speaker 1: the thing, the thing that's crazy about all of this
- 12:23Speaker 1: is they're all so special and, But the most amazing
- 12:27Speaker 1: thing is Travis is a generational talent. Travis Barker played
- 12:31Speaker 1: drums for my band for every single song. We were
- 12:35Speaker 1: writing songs together. We'd ask him about a part. He'd
- 12:39Speaker 1: play this part. We'd be like, hey, man, that feels great.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And he'd be like, oh, I have an idea. And
- 12:44Speaker 1: it was like he was playing drums for his own
- 12:46Speaker 1: band or as if he was in Yellowcard and I
- 12:49Speaker 1: don't want to lose track of the fact that he
- 12:52Speaker 1: is so good and he was so present for us.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And it just, that part shouldn't get lost. That should,
- 12:58Speaker 1: that's like a highlight of my life.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Do you think that'll continue moving forward over the next album?
- 13:05Speaker 1: I hope so. If you talk, if you talk to him,
- 13:10Speaker 1: make sure you put in a good word for you.
- 13:14Speaker 2: I will indeed.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Back to the violin a little bit too bro like
- 13:19Speaker 2: the deluxe edition features a better day is a sleep
- 13:22Speaker 2: version so when transforming like a high energy anthem track
- 13:26Speaker 2: like that into a stripped back sort of more ambient
- 13:28Speaker 2: version like how does your role change like the violin
- 13:31Speaker 2: enough to take on a little bit more of a
- 13:33Speaker 2: heavier emotional feeling wouldn't it yeah.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I mean that's kind of where i shine i think
- 13:38Speaker 1: early yellow card days in the i don't want to
- 13:41Speaker 1: date us but the late 1900s early 2000s the um
- 13:45Speaker 1: you know, that's where I got my start in the band.
- 13:48Speaker 1: You know, you pair some acoustic guitars and some emotional
- 13:53Speaker 1: acoustic moments with strings or violin. I think that's really
- 13:57Speaker 1: where I shine. And so we're able to bring that live.
- 14:02Speaker 1: You know, I know I'm a lunatic and I jump
- 14:03Speaker 1: around and, you know, I'm hyped up because if you
- 14:06Speaker 1: look around the room, there's not many violinists doing what
- 14:09Speaker 1: I do. So, but in that setting, in that classical
- 14:14Speaker 1: sort of, sleepy emotional place it's it's it's the best
- 14:18Speaker 1: part for the violin.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Ryan's mentioned like before Andrew that the demo phase for
- 14:26Speaker 2: Calvary Drive started as a simple weekend experiment before it
- 14:29Speaker 2: snowballed into the full album so looking back man like
- 14:33Speaker 2: do you remember the exact moment during that weekend when
- 14:35Speaker 2: you sort of went wow this is really going to
- 14:38Speaker 2: happen a new Yellowcard album is coming.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I mean, it kind of wasn't right away. I mean,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I think we wrote, you know, just to peel the
- 14:48Speaker 1: curtain back a little bit, we wrote Calvary Drive and
- 14:53Speaker 1: Barely Alive in like the same day. Or it was like,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you know, one right after the other. And those are
- 15:01Speaker 1: the two songs that really sparked the Better Days thing.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And I think it's funny because Calvary Drive was just
- 15:12Speaker 1: so fresh and so kind of pop punk. And it
- 15:16Speaker 1: was just very classic yellow card. I think we wrote
- 15:22Speaker 1: five or six different versions of that song. We're like,
- 15:24Speaker 1: is this right? Is this cool enough? Is this this
- 15:27Speaker 1: or whatever? And I think it was just an authentic
- 15:30Speaker 1: look at our band. And if it I mean, it
- 15:34Speaker 1: wasn't even just for us. It was, you know, we
- 15:37Speaker 1: had interest from record labels and multiple people in the
- 15:41Speaker 1: industry were like, man, this is special. You guys are back.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And it, we knew that it was the tip of
- 15:47Speaker 1: the iceberg. There was more to go. It just was
- 15:50Speaker 1: fun to get back together and do it again. And,
- 15:53Speaker 1: you know, I had already mentioned, we took seven years
- 15:58Speaker 1: off and we We're apart for so long, and it
- 16:02Speaker 1: just felt great to get back and do a song
- 16:05Speaker 1: like Calvary Drive and Barely Alive. It turned into Better Days,
- 16:08Speaker 1: and it's one of the most incredible musical moments of
- 16:13Speaker 1: our lives after everything that we've done and been through.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I couldn't imagine that it got bigger.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Cool man and the um as a digital exclusive release
- 16:23Speaker 2: like the better days deluxe gives fans instant access to
- 16:26Speaker 2: the definitive version of this year man but you've been
- 16:29Speaker 2: in the music industry a long time like how do
- 16:30Speaker 2: you think the the shifting landscapes of streaming and immediate
- 16:34Speaker 2: fan feedback have changed the way you approach bonus content today.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Yeah i mean i i don't think i what i
- 16:41Speaker 1: do is is much different i i think you know
- 16:44Speaker 1: i'm not in charge of the record label i collaborate
- 16:47Speaker 1: with and with the band but I think it's great
- 16:52Speaker 1: that the fans have power and presence and they show
- 16:56Speaker 1: up wherever they show up, right? I can't command people
- 17:00Speaker 1: to do anything and people vote with their feet or
- 17:02Speaker 1: they vote with streaming or they vote by buying an
- 17:06Speaker 1: album on iTunes or even a vinyl. And I think
- 17:09Speaker 1: that that's great. And however they do it in consumer band,
- 17:12Speaker 1: we're grateful for it. And it gives us instant insight
- 17:17Speaker 1: and how we can be there for our fans as well.
- 17:19Speaker 1: And so, you know, there's, there's opportunity in the place
- 17:24Speaker 1: where we get to write music and continue to do it.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And if there's another way that is better for the fans,
- 17:31Speaker 1: then we should look into that because the reality is,
- 17:34Speaker 1: is wherever they show up, if they want to listen
- 17:36Speaker 1: to our band, I want to be there for them.
- 17:39Speaker 1: So it's, it's a, it's a great tool and it's,
- 17:41Speaker 1: it's part of our music business. And, if I had
- 17:44Speaker 1: the power to command it and I would go back
- 17:46Speaker 1: to compact discs and, and traveling around and driving with
- 17:50Speaker 1: it with a disc man. But right now it's, it's great.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Whatever's great for our fans is great for us. Yeah.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Nice. Yeah. Take us back in time a bit, bro. Like,
- 17:57Speaker 2: do you remember the first time you heard one of
- 17:59Speaker 2: your songs played on the radio? What song was it?
- 18:02Speaker 2: And where were you? Yeah.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Uh, way away. I think we were on tour somewhere.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I just remember being in the front seat of our,
- 18:10Speaker 1: First van, Ryan and I traded our first cars in
- 18:13Speaker 1: for our first van. It was a Ford Econoline E150.
- 18:18Speaker 1: It had the slider door on the side. And Ryan
- 18:22Speaker 1: put a system in there. We had the kicker sub
- 18:24Speaker 1: in the back. And we built out like a futon
- 18:28Speaker 1: that was raised up so we could put our gear
- 18:30Speaker 1: and our luggage underneath. And we were in between gigs
- 18:34Speaker 1: kind of pulling into a truck stop or after a
- 18:37Speaker 1: concert somewhere. And he and I were in the front seat.
- 18:41Speaker 1: And we just caught it on a radio station. And
- 18:44Speaker 1: I was like, I'd had, we had heard the song
- 18:49Speaker 1: so much from, we had this Capitol pre-release disc that
- 18:53Speaker 1: was like numbered, you know, had the burner number on it.
- 18:56Speaker 1: So it's like, you couldn't, you know, scan it and
- 18:59Speaker 1: put it on the internet. And I just thought that
- 19:02Speaker 1: we were listening to the CD and then this, the
- 19:05Speaker 1: radio DJ was talking over it. And I was like,
- 19:07Speaker 1: this is really happening. I couldn't, I couldn't believe it.
- 19:10Speaker 1: that we're just in the wild hearing our songs on
- 19:13Speaker 1: the radio. So that was 2003. And here we are
- 19:17Speaker 1: a couple of years later, still hearing songs on the radio.
- 19:20Speaker 1: It's pretty cool.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Fantastic, man. Well, thanks very much for your time, Sean.
- 19:24Speaker 2: The digital version of Better Days Deluxe is out now
- 19:27Speaker 2: via Better Noise Music, mate. So all the best with it.
- 19:30Speaker 2: I know it's going to kick ass and we'll see
- 19:31Speaker 2: you next time you come out.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Yeah, brother. Appreciate it. Can't wait to come back.
