- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are
- 0:22Speaker 1: the most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor
- 0:29Speaker 1: where you stand with on X. On the subject of wind,
- 0:39Speaker 1: we've been talking about what it's very tall people, how
- 0:41Speaker 1: windy it is? You honest, so they don't think that
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm just, you know, strudlin. It's the windiest I think
- 0:46Speaker 1: I've ever seen it since I've moved to Montana five
- 0:49Speaker 1: years ago. It's so windy that Jana's got reports from
- 0:52Speaker 1: an eighty mile winds and oh yeah, over in big
- 0:55Speaker 1: timber rancher ship working cattle ship and cattle and he
- 0:59Speaker 1: says his eye are swollen from all the small particles
- 1:03Speaker 1: that have been blown into his eyeballs the last two
- 1:05Speaker 1: days that windy. I thought my windows might implode towards me.
- 1:10Speaker 1: This morning as I was making coffee, it was so
- 1:12Speaker 1: windy and the glass was flexing. Extremely windy. We have
- 1:16Speaker 1: a Halloween. It's so windy that that doesn't matter. There's
- 1:19Speaker 1: a Halloween decoration that I had to get up and
- 1:21Speaker 1: remove in the middle of the night. Bahm, but um oh,
- 1:26Speaker 1: here here's the way playing. How windy it is my
- 1:28Speaker 1: neighbors wheelbarrow which I don't know exactly where he stores
- 1:32Speaker 1: it on his property, but it was at least a
- 1:35Speaker 1: hundred yards from his house. It hit the wheel barrel
- 1:38Speaker 1: had just been blown across the landscape. This is it's
- 1:43Speaker 1: pretty windy. I got two windy things I want to
- 1:45Speaker 1: tell so, for the first time ever, my my beloved
- 1:48Speaker 1: sister in law say something. I need a viro is here.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Thank you, Steve be my favorite. Uh probably I like
- 1:58Speaker 1: you more n I like you more than my brother,
- 2:02Speaker 1: Like if I had to choose the tree, my brother
- 2:05Speaker 1: and my sister in law. You have two brothers and
- 2:07Speaker 1: two sisters in laws, and I'm talking about this one,
- 2:09Speaker 1: this one in particular. I'm just trying to I'm just
- 2:11Speaker 1: trying to lay it on Thick that when he is
- 2:13Speaker 1: married to yeah one, he's married to my brother Matt,
- 2:16Speaker 1: but like or more than him, which supposed to an
- 2:18Speaker 1: awkward position because originally, I don't know, I never told
- 2:22Speaker 1: you this. I was originally not skeptical of you. But
- 2:28Speaker 1: but I was sussing you out, Oh, because I care
- 2:33Speaker 1: about my brother a great deal and so you know
- 2:36Speaker 1: I love him to death. Would you find out in
- 2:38Speaker 1: your sussing, oh, that I liked you? But initially right initially,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I like, I wouldn't take him, saying like, oh, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 1: I whatever have a girl Friendily might get married. I
- 2:50Speaker 1: don't take that. Is I wouldn't take that. It's like,
- 2:52Speaker 1: oh gosh, can't wait to meet this wonderful person. My
- 2:57Speaker 1: head would go, what's wrong? Went like like, um, I
- 3:04Speaker 1: got her number. Now I'm gonna find out skepticism. He's like,
- 3:11Speaker 1: do them wrong? I don't know, just because injured skeptical,
- 3:16Speaker 1: Like I was skeptical. But then now you know you
- 3:19Speaker 1: really wanted me over, Like I love you so much,
- 3:22Speaker 1: so so kind, I love you so much. You do.
- 3:25Speaker 1: You such a great job at being a brother. You
- 3:27Speaker 1: do a great job being my brother's wife. But I'll
- 3:31Speaker 1: point out, you guys don't live together. It's a secret. Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 1: you guys live long happy marriage. You guys live nine
- 3:38Speaker 1: hours apart. Yes, it's just like a commune. It's like
- 3:42Speaker 1: a long it with no we have to immediate plans
- 3:45Speaker 1: to remedy the situation. Not even looking at it as
- 3:47Speaker 1: something that should be remedied. Absolutely not. Uh do when
- 3:52Speaker 1: we get a little older, like someday you haven't ruled
- 3:57Speaker 1: remedy makes it sound like there's like it's a problem
- 4:00Speaker 1: and there's something wrong and so yeah, So I was
- 4:01Speaker 1: trying to say, it's like it's not like a thing
- 4:03Speaker 1: that they're like stuck in and wish they weren't. You
- 4:07Speaker 1: just don't live together. Just don't live together. I think
- 4:09Speaker 1: a lot of people it probably wish. Yeah, when we
- 4:13Speaker 1: need assisted living, help assist each other, and we might
- 4:19Speaker 1: as well just have one person do it. It's cheaper. Well,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you just start to love each other so much that
- 4:24Speaker 1: you can't be that far apart anymore. You need more
- 4:28Speaker 1: time together. We got a lot of love right now.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I don't know. I wanta tell you my windy story
- 4:32Speaker 1: though this is very windy. I thought your brother's house
- 4:35Speaker 1: was going to blow away. Well, that's why, that's what
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'm getting it. I'm trying to just this is a
- 4:38Speaker 1: prolonged set up for a story about windy nous. The
- 4:41Speaker 1: first time I took my wife two my brother's house
- 4:46Speaker 1: a mile city. Um, she'd never been a mile city,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and I think she's just had like she's pregnant. We
- 4:55Speaker 1: had one baby and she's pregning with another baby. Either way,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I take her there and I don't know what and
- 5:02Speaker 1: I didn't know, but there's like a there's there's a
- 5:05Speaker 1: tornado coming. But I didn't know there's a tornado coming.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So we get to Mile City and we're gonna go fishing,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and our friend d was there as well, and so
- 5:16Speaker 1: Katie's like, well, I was gonna hang out and catch
- 5:17Speaker 1: up with Dan and we'll hang out in the house
- 5:19Speaker 1: and you guys all go fishing. So we started down
- 5:21Speaker 1: the road to go fishing, and also like a tornado
- 5:23Speaker 1: hits and uh blows trees, Like we couldn't even get
- 5:28Speaker 1: anywhere down. We couldn't get down the road because like
- 5:30Speaker 1: cotton woods are blown down the road. A chunk of
- 5:32Speaker 1: Matt's roof blows off his house. WHOA. She's like huddled
- 5:39Speaker 1: in the door frame and and she's like never been
- 5:42Speaker 1: to this talent her life. She's only been here like
- 5:43Speaker 1: thirty minutes, and she's thinking, my god, displaces Windy. You know.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Unbeknownst to any of us, it was like and his
- 5:51Speaker 1: door frames probably aren't the sturdiest of door frames. No,
- 5:54Speaker 1: it's like the kind of house that they haul in on.
- 5:56Speaker 1: It's the kind of house they hauling in on a trailer. Yes, yes, yes, yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 1: uh yeah. She's like, no, one, I can't picture how
- 6:03Speaker 1: windy it is here. But I was like arrived during
- 6:05Speaker 1: a tornado. Um yesterday we I was out with my
- 6:11Speaker 1: wife and kids and we ran um ran aground. Two
- 6:17Speaker 1: days ago, ran our jetboat aground. And I blame the
- 6:20Speaker 1: wind for this because like when you're you can run
- 6:23Speaker 1: a jetboat and inches of water, you know, but you
- 6:25Speaker 1: kind of rely when you're picking your course. You kind
- 6:27Speaker 1: of rely on the way the water looks. You're looking
- 6:31Speaker 1: for deep water shallow water. And the wind was so severe.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Two things. The wind was so severe that it interrupted
- 6:37Speaker 1: the surface activity on the river and made everything look
- 6:41Speaker 1: different because the wind's blown up current and made and
- 6:45Speaker 1: made it so you couldn't like read the river right.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And I was trying to buy a fishing license for
- 6:50Speaker 1: my wife, and I was convinced that she already had one.
- 6:52Speaker 1: She was convinced she didn't have one. So we're on
- 6:55Speaker 1: the phone. I'm trying to drive the boat down a
- 6:57Speaker 1: very shallow river and be on the phone like, no,
- 7:00Speaker 1: hit that button. No, it's your birthday, you know, I
- 7:03Speaker 1: know you go. And also just dead, I mean like
- 7:10Speaker 1: ran aground but nobody got thrown. No one got thrown.
- 7:15Speaker 1: That's good. It was kind of like bamn. Yeah, everybody
- 7:20Speaker 1: had to get out dragging the boat around. It was
- 7:24Speaker 1: just a gravel bar. Yeah, it ran up on a
- 7:26Speaker 1: gravel bar. Scared the hell out everybody. It was bad.
- 7:31Speaker 1: And then um, yeah, it's like generally horrible fishing. A dude.
- 7:38Speaker 1: A dude gave us a walleye, so we want up
- 7:40Speaker 1: with two because the guy gave us one. So dude
- 7:43Speaker 1: had caught one and didn't want to clean it, gave
- 7:45Speaker 1: us that wall and then we caught our own and
- 7:47Speaker 1: went home with two walleye. That's it. It's a very
- 7:50Speaker 1: windy day. Camped out for the night. Big Doings, also
- 7:54Speaker 1: joined by Casey Snyder. Thank you thanks for having me
- 7:57Speaker 1: spelled real weird. Hey, you know it's the American version
- 8:00Speaker 1: of a German name, so s and I that strong
- 8:04Speaker 1: German I rather than a y, which I think is
- 8:06Speaker 1: Dutch technically. Yeah, and you're you're currently to give people
- 8:10Speaker 1: your tell people what you're up to. So I am
- 8:11Speaker 1: in the state legislature back home in Utah. So I
- 8:14Speaker 1: am from Cash Valley represent the fifth District, the Fighting
- 8:17Speaker 1: Five as we like to call it, a state legislature
- 8:20Speaker 1: and uh last session, this last spring session, we ran
- 8:23Speaker 1: a bill to mend our state constitution to add the
- 8:26Speaker 1: right to hunting fish in our state and joined a
- 8:28Speaker 1: bunch of states, including this one, and UH make sure
- 8:31Speaker 1: that that right, that opportunity is always protected in Utah.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So that's what I'm here to talk to you about today. Yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and you're super involved in one year an egg. Yep,
- 8:39Speaker 1: we have we we farm, we ranch, we we kind
- 8:42Speaker 1: of dabble in everything. I am a man of many hats,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I would say, including that John Deer when you got
- 8:48Speaker 1: on right now, absolutely all the way, green, all the way.
- 8:52Speaker 1: But yeah, so we we farm and ranch and then
- 8:54Speaker 1: um in the legislature and also working on a PhD
- 8:57Speaker 1: and fire forestry and fire to State University. That's sort
- 9:01Speaker 1: of one of those ongoing things. But that dovetails in
- 9:05Speaker 1: with In the summertime, we have a local department and
- 9:08Speaker 1: I usually will go out for a couple of months,
- 9:11Speaker 1: a couple of weeks and UH fight fire including this summer.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So there's what's your what are you looking at? So
- 9:17Speaker 1: we're looking at basically better ways to predict fire in
- 9:21Speaker 1: our state. So I'm working on a fire atlas which
- 9:24Speaker 1: would say, hey, when does this type of vegetation burn?
- 9:27Speaker 1: How often and how big do the fires usually go?
- 9:29Speaker 1: So basic baseline data stuff, and then we're going to
- 9:33Speaker 1: look at some other topics relative to management to private
- 9:38Speaker 1: lands in the state of Utah burn more often than
- 9:40Speaker 1: federal lands are bigger, those types of just just basic questions.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Let's see what's going on down there on a longer scale.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So we'll see. It's one of those we're five years in.
- 9:49Speaker 1: We'll hopefully one day they'll call me doctor, but we'll see. So,
- 9:54Speaker 1: just just to recap, you're in your like in your
- 9:57Speaker 1: state legislature, legislature yep. And you guys are in farming.
- 10:02Speaker 1: You help operate a family ranch and you fight fires.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Summertimes are busy at my house, and you're like enrolled
- 10:10Speaker 1: in an academic program yep. Ye. If you don't sleep,
- 10:15Speaker 1: you can get a lot done. I'll just say it.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Just stay up a lot. You know, caffeine, you know what.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Surprised and jealous Steve A. Little bit man. Uh yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 1: I do. I would keep you because with with that array,
- 10:29Speaker 1: if something's not interesting that day, just do something, Just
- 10:31Speaker 1: work on a different thing. Yeah yeah, And I could
- 10:33Speaker 1: tell people what I am that day rather than you know.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Uh so maybe today I'll be the firefighter and tomorrow
- 10:39Speaker 1: I'll be the farmer. You know. Also keeping it keeping
- 10:41Speaker 1: it light, keep it flexible. You know what's surprised me
- 10:44Speaker 1: recently about the fires. Um. I want to point out
- 10:47Speaker 1: a commonality between two and or two guests here. My
- 10:50Speaker 1: sister in law wanted to there's a lot of differences
- 10:52Speaker 1: and a lot of commonalities that I want to point out.
- 10:54Speaker 1: You guys both are in livestock in some respects, Like
- 10:58Speaker 1: you guys have a large horse heard whine I wanted
- 11:00Speaker 1: to lives on UM lives on a guess ranch over Missoula,
- 11:06Speaker 1: And you guys keep a shipload of horses. Yes, And
- 11:11Speaker 1: so I was. I was talking to Casey earlier. I
- 11:14Speaker 1: was curious about his crazy management and and you guys
- 11:18Speaker 1: are in the cattle business. UM, and you guys both
- 11:24Speaker 1: like our fire obsessed because it could come into like
- 11:28Speaker 1: wipe out, because it could come wipe the program out. Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 1: I think obsessed as I'll take that as a compliment.
- 11:35Speaker 1: We'll say that's a good thing. Are meant is a
- 11:36Speaker 1: good thing? Oh, it's a courage man, like I learned.
- 11:39Speaker 1: The thing that I didn't know recently is we had
- 11:42Speaker 1: a big fire right here and we had friends lose
- 11:45Speaker 1: their homes and stuff. And for a minute we were
- 11:47Speaker 1: kind of on stand by and see if we had
- 11:49Speaker 1: to evacuate, and it was close to a hiking trail,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and I'm running around telling everybody, just no way that
- 11:55Speaker 1: someone flicked a cigarette. That's there was no weather that
- 11:59Speaker 1: I learned that it a lightning strike confessed or in
- 12:05Speaker 1: the ground or in a tree. It was weeks, wasn't it.
- 12:09Speaker 1: They think that it was a lightning strike from weeks earlier. Like,
- 12:13Speaker 1: how the hell does that happen? We've had that happened
- 12:15Speaker 1: on our place with burning in the fall and in
- 12:18Speaker 1: the winter and then it just goes to the duff
- 12:21Speaker 1: and goes to the roots and then blows up in
- 12:24Speaker 1: March April with spring wind like burning brush and suddenly
- 12:31Speaker 1: there's instant flame and burning. I mean, Casey knows this. Yeah,
- 12:35Speaker 1: it happens all the time. You can have fires at
- 12:37Speaker 1: the last all winter under under the snow, wake up
- 12:39Speaker 1: in the spring out there it is again really because
- 12:44Speaker 1: this is like in plain sight, man, that it must
- 12:46Speaker 1: have just been living in this tree and then erupted
- 12:49Speaker 1: out of the ground. One time I might have talked
- 12:52Speaker 1: about this for but I can't remember. But one time
- 12:55Speaker 1: we were camping hunting elk and we started a fire
- 13:00Speaker 1: and it was that like on a ridge top with
- 13:02Speaker 1: a lot of white bark pine, there's that deep deep duff,
- 13:05Speaker 1: you know, and you'd like dig down that ship you
- 13:07Speaker 1: never quite hit like mineral soil, but you try to whatever,
- 13:11Speaker 1: make a fire. And we made a fire, put it out,
- 13:16Speaker 1: like thoroughly put it out, I thought. A couple of
- 13:20Speaker 1: days later, still up hunting, I'm like, that's so weird
- 13:24Speaker 1: that there's some dudes camped and that weird ass spot
- 13:28Speaker 1: where we are camped because it's not like a camp spot,
- 13:31Speaker 1: because I see smoke rising up, and I'm watching the
- 13:35Speaker 1: smoke and like become more aware of the smoke and
- 13:38Speaker 1: more turning around in my head, like what are the
- 13:39Speaker 1: odds of two people would camp there and make a
- 13:41Speaker 1: fire and eventually wander up there and sure enough, man,
- 13:46Speaker 1: it had burned down in the pine Duff and popped
- 13:48Speaker 1: up ten ft away, and then we had to go
- 13:53Speaker 1: in there and just excavate the whole. We had to
- 13:55Speaker 1: take like an evening off hunting and excavate the whole
- 13:59Speaker 1: damn area, trying to put all of our fires out. Yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 1: you know some of that stuff. I was on a fire,
- 14:05Speaker 1: the Rice Ridge fire over in Seeley Lake three or
- 14:07Speaker 1: four years ago, and we had I don't know, six
- 14:10Speaker 1: pumps in series that we're just running and you'd wake
- 14:12Speaker 1: up in the morning and you'd spray water on it
- 14:14Speaker 1: pretty much all day and go home. Next morning you'd
- 14:17Speaker 1: come up and it'd be smoldering again. That Duff's. Once
- 14:20Speaker 1: it's got heat, and especially some of this country, it
- 14:23Speaker 1: it'll go a long time. So you know, maybe that
- 14:25Speaker 1: fire is still burning. Maybe there have you been up
- 14:27Speaker 1: there lately to check to see if that campfires all
- 14:29Speaker 1: the ways, It has been about twenty years, so I hope,
- 14:31Speaker 1: I hope by now it's all well. We had another
- 14:33Speaker 1: we had another one that similar thing. It wasn't the
- 14:36Speaker 1: snow and it's tunneled away from us. And then the
- 14:40Speaker 1: reason you can see it is it got like steamy
- 14:43Speaker 1: over in other areas where the fire traveled underground through
- 14:46Speaker 1: the Duff and then started melting up patches of snow
- 14:50Speaker 1: too combust. I've learned a lot of lessons since then. Uh,
- 14:56Speaker 1: is this your first term doing the state. I'm coming
- 15:00Speaker 1: out of my first term running for my second. So
- 15:03Speaker 1: you got a win coming up here, you know, the
- 15:05Speaker 1: fingers crossed. We'll see how it goes. And then how
- 15:09Speaker 1: did it come to be? Like, tell people what the
- 15:11Speaker 1: program you're involved in or the bill you're trying to
- 15:13Speaker 1: do with the right to hunt and fish? Like, what's
- 15:16Speaker 1: that all about? So you know, if I'm not doing
- 15:19Speaker 1: everything else, I guess you should say I'm hunting and fishing,
- 15:23Speaker 1: and that is a big part of who I am.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And you know, we were We've been going back and
- 15:27Speaker 1: forth on setting this up. I was up at Elk
- 15:29Speaker 1: camp all last week and happy not to respond to
- 15:32Speaker 1: any emails or phone calls. Now, did you get a note?
- 15:35Speaker 1: I did you a little five by six bulls? Utah,
- 15:40Speaker 1: It is a lot easier to get them with your rifle.
- 15:42Speaker 1: We'll just say that. But it's it's dark timber up there,
- 15:45Speaker 1: you know, in public land hunt. So it was I'm
- 15:48Speaker 1: happy to have that, you know, that done, But that
- 15:52Speaker 1: that's something I've grown up and done my whole life,
- 15:55Speaker 1: and um when I I'm currently the head of us
- 15:58Speaker 1: what's called the Hunting and Fish and Caucus in our
- 16:00Speaker 1: state legislature, and we've sort of been looking at how
- 16:04Speaker 1: do we preserve this legacy, this opportunity into the future.
- 16:07Speaker 1: We don't know what tomorrow is gonna bring. We don't
- 16:09Speaker 1: know what kind of pressures are going to be on
- 16:10Speaker 1: our sport going forward. So if we could codify now
- 16:13Speaker 1: when support is high for these types of activities, for
- 16:17Speaker 1: hunting and fishing, we could put that in our constitution.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Maybe down the road, if perceptions change or public opinion shifts,
- 16:23Speaker 1: there's at least a higher threshold before those sort of
- 16:26Speaker 1: activities could be eliminated or curtailed. So that was sort
- 16:30Speaker 1: of the thinking behind things. But you know, it's common
- 16:32Speaker 1: for people to say that, Um, I don't. People always
- 16:35Speaker 1: say it's a privilege. It's like a part of like
- 16:37Speaker 1: what they teach and hunter safety and stuff. But I
- 16:40Speaker 1: think that's the balance, Right, it's a a right. I
- 16:44Speaker 1: think the privilege comes in it can be revoked. Right,
- 16:47Speaker 1: you don't follow the rules, you're not up to two
- 16:51Speaker 1: current statute and doing things the right way. Yeah, you can,
- 16:54Speaker 1: that can be eliminated. But at a fundamental level, that
- 16:57Speaker 1: fundamental right level, the opportunity to followed a law and
- 17:00Speaker 1: to harvest something with your own hands. That's what we're
- 17:03Speaker 1: trying to protect. Everything else is subject to statute right
- 17:07Speaker 1: and to limitation by the Division Wildlife Resources or our
- 17:10Speaker 1: state legislature. But to be always guaranteed that if you're
- 17:15Speaker 1: following the law, you can go hunt or fish for
- 17:19Speaker 1: something in our state. That's that was the genesis and
- 17:21Speaker 1: the impetus behind the whole thing. How many states have
- 17:24Speaker 1: the protection I believe right now, and you know some
- 17:27Speaker 1: of this goes back, uh clear back into the founding.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So there are states back east, I believe it's Connecticut
- 17:33Speaker 1: if I remember right, or Vermont, um, they're you know,
- 17:37Speaker 1: right as they're putting their state constitution together, boom, it
- 17:40Speaker 1: was in there the right to hunt and fish. And
- 17:43Speaker 1: so we're we're kind of keeping up a lot of
- 17:45Speaker 1: the states around us have it. You guys have it
- 17:47Speaker 1: here Idaho, even California has the right to fish. Now
- 17:51Speaker 1: they've you know, really they didn't get the they parsed
- 17:54Speaker 1: it out, you know, so and seriously that's dead serious,
- 17:57Speaker 1: and that's maybe some of the concern that we had
- 17:58Speaker 1: when we ran it. You know, like they're already starting
- 18:01Speaker 1: to say, maybe this isn't they were in the right
- 18:02Speaker 1: to fish, You have a right to fish, but you
- 18:05Speaker 1: don't have a right to hunt in California. So you know,
- 18:09Speaker 1: so bow fishing is that in that gray area, right, Like,
- 18:13Speaker 1: I don't know how that all works, so anyway, but yeah,
- 18:16Speaker 1: so we're just you know, following great ideas and hopefully
- 18:20Speaker 1: adding it to our state constitution. Voters have to obviously
- 18:24Speaker 1: adopt it, so it has to be simple majority, simple majority.
- 18:28Speaker 1: State legislature has to support it with two thirds. So
- 18:30Speaker 1: it passed in the House and Senate in our legislature
- 18:33Speaker 1: with a two thirds majority, and now it'll go to
- 18:35Speaker 1: the people and it just has to you know, plus one. Okay,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I got a whole bunch of questions. But oh so,
- 18:43Speaker 1: why it didn't pass unanimously? No, what was the argument
- 18:48Speaker 1: against passing it so that it was unnecessary? Like what? Yes, yeah,
- 18:52Speaker 1: I mean fundamentally, it's like, well, of course that's always
- 18:55Speaker 1: going to be something. Why we don't need to elevate
- 18:57Speaker 1: it to the level of a constitutional amendment? And you know,
- 19:01Speaker 1: I sort of make the argument that you do, and
- 19:03Speaker 1: and history and our state would prove so. Um. I
- 19:07Speaker 1: don't know if you've talked about it here, but in
- 19:09Speaker 1: Colorado right now, there's obviously a there is a proposition
- 19:13Speaker 1: to add wolves, to reintroduce wolves going on in the
- 19:16Speaker 1: state of Colorado, which has been made a moot point
- 19:21Speaker 1: because they've since then, well they've been haggling over this.
- 19:24Speaker 1: The wolves just showed up on their own. Yeah, so
- 19:26Speaker 1: they're there now. But see, in our state, you can't
- 19:30Speaker 1: buy a proposition without a two thirds majority make decisions
- 19:34Speaker 1: relative to wildlife. So we passed a constitutional amendment that
- 19:38Speaker 1: set that threshold. This is in the early two thousands.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And when that ran through, everyone's like, well, this is crazy.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Who would you who even cares? Right? Why would you
- 19:45Speaker 1: want this to happen? And it was sort of this
- 19:47Speaker 1: argument that it was unnecessary. You fast forward twenty years
- 19:51Speaker 1: and you look across the state line and you're like, huh, well,
- 19:53Speaker 1: let's they're kind of doing that now. You mean that
- 19:55Speaker 1: that people are putting like a very simple wildlife management
- 19:59Speaker 1: to decision that would normally be made by agencies appointed
- 20:03Speaker 1: to make those kind of decisions. They're putting it like
- 20:05Speaker 1: to a simple Gayer nay vote, taken science out of it,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and and totally basing wildlife management on public opinion. And
- 20:13Speaker 1: that was again sort of seen as unnecessary. And so
- 20:17Speaker 1: you look at this amendment with that as context, and
- 20:20Speaker 1: you can say, you know, it's nice just to have
- 20:23Speaker 1: this as a safeguard when you've got public opinion on
- 20:25Speaker 1: your side, and it's nice to be able to guarantee
- 20:28Speaker 1: in our state that right to hunting fish because the
- 20:31Speaker 1: majority of our population supports it. Now, we don't know
- 20:35Speaker 1: where it will be ten thirty years from now. Has
- 20:37Speaker 1: there any state ever tried to run one of these
- 20:39Speaker 1: and lost? I think they have. Yeah, But I believe
- 20:43Speaker 1: that if we've all the states where it's past with
- 20:45Speaker 1: clear majorities, there's there hasn't been any problems. And right
- 20:49Speaker 1: now there there hasn't been any big pushback. All the
- 20:52Speaker 1: major hook and bullet groups in our state are supporting
- 20:54Speaker 1: us right now, and there's not any opposition to things.
- 20:57Speaker 1: So I'm hoping we're gonna you know, smooth sale and
- 21:00Speaker 1: everything will be good. But you know, I don't know,
- 21:03Speaker 1: there's not there's no organized opposition to right to hunting fish. No,
- 21:07Speaker 1: And again any of the any of the concern comes
- 21:10Speaker 1: down to why do we need to do this and
- 21:12Speaker 1: why are we doing now? And that's you know, that's
- 21:15Speaker 1: a pretty good argument that that's beautible. So see how
- 21:18Speaker 1: it goes. I'm optimistic we're gonna get it passed through
- 21:22Speaker 1: and uh and I'm you know, one of those people
- 21:25Speaker 1: that's going to benefit from it. So can you can
- 21:29Speaker 1: you try to identify a like what would be a
- 21:34Speaker 1: thing that this could prevent from happening, Like, like what
- 21:37Speaker 1: would be an issue if you look at other states
- 21:40Speaker 1: or some kind of other rule that's come down, what
- 21:42Speaker 1: would be something that this would be beneficial in protecting from.
- 21:45Speaker 1: So one of the provisions is that's added to there.
- 21:48Speaker 1: So we sort of put a box around this. Right,
- 21:50Speaker 1: we say subject to state rules and a few other things.
- 21:53Speaker 1: But one of the things that we we guarantee in
- 21:56Speaker 1: this is that hunting and fishing will be the primary
- 21:59Speaker 1: tool for managing wildlife populations. So if you look in
- 22:02Speaker 1: back East in particular, where you've got high density of
- 22:06Speaker 1: white tailed deer for example, um, they're basically paying state
- 22:11Speaker 1: agencies sometimes at night, sometimes with other means to to
- 22:15Speaker 1: eliminate deer because they've got so many. Our amendment says
- 22:19Speaker 1: hunting and fishing would do that. So if not only
- 22:22Speaker 1: do you have the right to take, but you're saying
- 22:24Speaker 1: the North American model is fundamental to this and hunters
- 22:27Speaker 1: and anglers are always going to be the primary ones
- 22:29Speaker 1: playing a role in how wildlife are managed in our state.
- 22:32Speaker 1: So that's, for example, one real specific and nuanced thing
- 22:35Speaker 1: that hopefully this will protect against going forward. Why don't
- 22:40Speaker 1: you guys roll trapping into that, uh, because we believe
- 22:45Speaker 1: that that's covered under the statute. So it's harvest take game,
- 22:48Speaker 1: you know, and I think that's covered without sort of
- 22:53Speaker 1: the bigger fight that always occurs over that. I I
- 22:57Speaker 1: out of odd No, I think if you're if you're
- 23:02Speaker 1: harvesting wildlife, it's covered, right, And there's always that public perception.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Public opinion drives everything. And while I love to trap,
- 23:12Speaker 1: that's something I grip doing mostly bobcats and beavers, there
- 23:15Speaker 1: is a pretty strong anti sentiment with that. So if
- 23:18Speaker 1: you can cover that and preserve that right with basically harvest,
- 23:23Speaker 1: why have the fight. I mean, there's enough fighting in
- 23:25Speaker 1: politics as it is, So if we can we can
- 23:28Speaker 1: achieve the same objective without sticking into somebody's eye. Let's
- 23:31Speaker 1: do that calling it out now, would it prevent Let's
- 23:34Speaker 1: just say, if you're following in the tracks of California,
- 23:39Speaker 1: like they've lost the right or ability to use hounds, right, Yeah,
- 23:43Speaker 1: So when it's when something like that comes up, when
- 23:46Speaker 1: they're like, well you can still hunt, but you can't
- 23:48Speaker 1: do it this way anymore. How does that work? You know,
- 23:50Speaker 1: I'm I'm that's still that honestly, that discretion still applies. Like,
- 23:55Speaker 1: so we're not eliminating the divisions making rules and regulations.
- 23:59Speaker 1: That's it's all subject to that. But what it would
- 24:01Speaker 1: say is maybe you can't use dogs or you know,
- 24:04Speaker 1: there's already rules over dogs or bait or whatever on
- 24:07Speaker 1: different bears and lions. But the ability, it would what
- 24:10Speaker 1: it would guarantee is that you could still harvest bear
- 24:13Speaker 1: right as long as populations are such and you meet
- 24:16Speaker 1: objectives and all those types of things. So it's that's
- 24:18Speaker 1: the root of it that there will always be that debate,
- 24:22Speaker 1: and I think it's necessary, imprudent right about means and methods.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I think that's a natural part of of our sport.
- 24:29Speaker 1: And I think that has to be part of it.
- 24:31Speaker 1: But what we're trying to do is is prevent it
- 24:34Speaker 1: from being eliminated wholly as an option, which is that
- 24:39Speaker 1: that's what people argue when they argue the death by
- 24:42Speaker 1: a thousand cuts. Yeah thing, I mean, everybody likes to
- 24:46Speaker 1: poke fun at California when it comes to death by
- 24:49Speaker 1: a thousands because it's easy, right, it's it is easy
- 24:51Speaker 1: to poke fun at calf. Yeah. I had a guy,
- 24:53Speaker 1: like a very high ranking it's a national hobby to
- 24:56Speaker 1: pull fund of California that's going. But yeah, I had
- 24:59Speaker 1: a very high ranking person in California's Wildlife department predict
- 25:04Speaker 1: to me. And he made this prediction a long time ago,
- 25:07Speaker 1: years ago. He predicted me. He said, uh, we will
- 25:12Speaker 1: lose bow hunting next through referendum. And he put it
- 25:18Speaker 1: that he said, I think in twenty five years it'll
- 25:22Speaker 1: all be gone. M h. If you look at in California,
- 25:29Speaker 1: they did like method to take stuff on mountain lions, okay,
- 25:34Speaker 1: but eventually just got rid of mountain lion any mountain
- 25:38Speaker 1: lion harvest at all by hunters. It's all done now
- 25:41Speaker 1: by it's all done on by the state. I mean,
- 25:43Speaker 1: there's still there's still under damage permits killing several hundred
- 25:46Speaker 1: of a year. They're still killing the same amount. The
- 25:50Speaker 1: state and agents are killing about as many as hunters
- 25:54Speaker 1: used to, but they removed methods before eventually getting round
- 25:59Speaker 1: to the thing in trapping, like got rid of trapping
- 26:05Speaker 1: and then went to a thing to be that you
- 26:07Speaker 1: can't sell for mhm. So what I'd be more interested
- 26:12Speaker 1: in is like a piece of protection um or. I
- 26:15Speaker 1: wish that that the protections you could measure more against
- 26:20Speaker 1: the death by a thousand cuts thing. H One frustration
- 26:24Speaker 1: I have with conservation groups, especially once a frustration I
- 26:28Speaker 1: have with conservation groups to focus on um habitat issues UH,
- 26:34Speaker 1: which are very important access issues, is they oftentimes don't
- 26:39Speaker 1: like to get embroiled in the method of take arguments.
- 26:44Speaker 1: So a couple of years ago, there was a thing
- 26:46Speaker 1: in this state that was talk about like death by
- 26:49Speaker 1: thousand cuts, like the level of specificity. It was no trapping,
- 26:55Speaker 1: not no trapping, but no trapping on public land mhmm.
- 27:00Speaker 1: To try to narrow it down to like a little
- 27:02Speaker 1: thing that you think you could get They're like, what's
- 27:06Speaker 1: the what's something we could get away with? They got
- 27:08Speaker 1: clappered they got clapped, didn't pass it, but it was
- 27:12Speaker 1: like so fine tuned to try to make some progress
- 27:16Speaker 1: towards getting rid of hunting, trapping whatever. In Maine, it
- 27:24Speaker 1: was there's a thing a couple of years ago in Maine,
- 27:26Speaker 1: I think it was getting rid of bait for bears,
- 27:29Speaker 1: getting rid of hounds for bears, and people would point out, well,
- 27:36Speaker 1: that's the only way people like in in thick flat country,
- 27:39Speaker 1: that's the only way people get bears. So you're effectively
- 27:43Speaker 1: ending nine of the bear harvest. But you're not coming
- 27:46Speaker 1: out and saying that you're trying to make it an
- 27:48Speaker 1: issue about dogs and bait. But we see what you're
- 27:51Speaker 1: really driving after. So it would be cool if to
- 27:54Speaker 1: protect if you if we can make protections that helped
- 27:58Speaker 1: also prevent the like just whittling away at people's stuff.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I've never heard in California that the thing has gone
- 28:07Speaker 1: anywhere to like band bowl hunting. But this guy had
- 28:09Speaker 1: it laid out like how it would be approached, how
- 28:11Speaker 1: it would be one well, and I think that goes
- 28:14Speaker 1: to the broader point. As hunters and anglers, we've got
- 28:18Speaker 1: to be involved, right, Like, there's at my level, there
- 28:21Speaker 1: is literally only so much I can do, and we've
- 28:24Speaker 1: I think we've done that and sort of set the
- 28:26Speaker 1: table and set a pretty high threshold instead of pretty
- 28:29Speaker 1: strong burden of proof. But if you if you like
- 28:32Speaker 1: to hunting fish and you're not involved in the political process,
- 28:36Speaker 1: it's gonna be involved for you without you. And so
- 28:39Speaker 1: that's sort of I think, I know we're kind of
- 28:41Speaker 1: coming off topic a little bit here, but if if
- 28:44Speaker 1: you appreciate these opportunities, you better support them the whole way,
- 28:49Speaker 1: and that's through initiatives, that's the ballot box. Heck, if
- 28:51Speaker 1: you like to hunting fish, maybe you ought to even
- 28:54Speaker 1: run for office. You know what ruins hunting and fishing
- 28:56Speaker 1: for me? Political service? Yeah, it's it's not getting ready
- 29:00Speaker 1: for the legislative session in January really screws up my
- 29:03Speaker 1: duck hunt. I'm not gonna lie, but you know, I
- 29:07Speaker 1: believe in this stuff and it's important to me, and
- 29:09Speaker 1: I'm willing to step up. And I think is as
- 29:11Speaker 1: folks like to do that, we've got to be willing
- 29:13Speaker 1: to make that sacrifice on the front end so that
- 29:16Speaker 1: this legacy and this heritage is there for our kids.
- 29:29Speaker 1: When the state's go to do the right to hunt
- 29:31Speaker 1: fishing thing. Is there like a is there like a plan?
- 29:36Speaker 1: Like it's a little package they send you to do
- 29:38Speaker 1: it in your own state. I mean, how did it
- 29:40Speaker 1: come to be that that that came on your radar? Well, so,
- 29:43Speaker 1: actually I had a buddy that um had done some
- 29:47Speaker 1: research work as part of a master's degree, was just
- 29:50Speaker 1: sort of compiling data. He's like, hey, we don't have
- 29:52Speaker 1: one of these. This ought to be a good thing,
- 29:54Speaker 1: you know. And then I started reaching out to the
- 29:56Speaker 1: various conservation groups and said, hey, what do you think
- 29:58Speaker 1: about this? And know everybody jumped up and down. You
- 30:02Speaker 1: you want to hear a really interesting committee hearing on
- 30:04Speaker 1: politics is largely boring unless somebody says something stupid. I
- 30:08Speaker 1: think that's sort of the norm. But in our legislature
- 30:11Speaker 1: and the committee where this bill was presented, when we
- 30:14Speaker 1: put this forth, we had like half the room in tears.
- 30:17Speaker 1: It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my
- 30:19Speaker 1: whole political career. The chairman is crying saying I'm going
- 30:22Speaker 1: to protect this opportunity for my daughter, like this is amazing,
- 30:26Speaker 1: for real tears. Like I'm like I'm sitting there presenting
- 30:29Speaker 1: on my bill and thinking all I think I got
- 30:31Speaker 1: pretty strong support in here because he's crying, and he's crying,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and everybody's telling stories about the bull that came off
- 30:38Speaker 1: the mountain, you know, and their daughter's first deer and
- 30:40Speaker 1: those types of things. So, uh, you know that it
- 30:44Speaker 1: was a good idea that obviously had a lot of
- 30:46Speaker 1: support and a lot of political and emotional support, and
- 30:49Speaker 1: we've run the whole way with it. So has have
- 30:51Speaker 1: you gotten any well articulated, um, like, any well articulated
- 30:57Speaker 1: opposition to it? No? Now, I mean there there are
- 31:01Speaker 1: opinions out there, and I would say that the um
- 31:05Speaker 1: when folks are saying is this really necessary? I mean,
- 31:07Speaker 1: I they use good words and correct grammar, so I
- 31:10Speaker 1: think you could classify it as well articulated. I just
- 31:12Speaker 1: don't think it's compelling, and that maybe that's the difference.
- 31:16Speaker 1: So I think we're gonna be okay, you know, fingers crossed,
- 31:18Speaker 1: hopefully the voters in the state of util make the
- 31:20Speaker 1: right choice. Are those folks. Are those opinions coming from
- 31:24Speaker 1: people like our groups like Peter or is it just
- 31:27Speaker 1: random people that are actually saying, oh really, why why? Now?
- 31:31Speaker 1: I think it's more random. Yeah, you know, even um,
- 31:35Speaker 1: some of our large groups made society and and Peter
- 31:38Speaker 1: like you mentioned that maybe would sort of be a
- 31:41Speaker 1: catalyst for opposition. They they've largely said no, it's you know,
- 31:46Speaker 1: not a big deal, so at least publicly, And that's
- 31:49Speaker 1: how they're behaving so far. And you know, our ballots
- 31:51Speaker 1: are coming out this week and back home, I'm assuming
- 31:54Speaker 1: that you guys are getting yours here too for mail
- 31:56Speaker 1: and so and oh man, uh, you know, so we're
- 32:00Speaker 1: only what a couple of weeks a couple three weeks
- 32:03Speaker 1: before the election, So I think, you know, I think
- 32:06Speaker 1: we're going to be okay, but you never know. So well,
- 32:08Speaker 1: that's why I am so happy to be here today,
- 32:11Speaker 1: and hopefully all the listeners in Utah will be convinced
- 32:14Speaker 1: by the compelling argument that I have made on this podcast.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Well yeah, I think you probably we're gonna lose it,
- 32:19Speaker 1: but now you're gonna win. We'll shocking up to media. R.
- 32:24Speaker 1: What exactly does it say? It's I mean, I can't
- 32:28Speaker 1: gurgitate it verbatim because it's fairly long, but it's basically
- 32:31Speaker 1: the right to hunt fish will be preserved subject to
- 32:33Speaker 1: da da da da da da dada. And when you
- 32:35Speaker 1: go into when you normally going to do a referendum
- 32:37Speaker 1: thing like I'm always guilty of. I'm actually gonna touch
- 32:40Speaker 1: on this later because I have to talk about my
- 32:43Speaker 1: sister in law way needed more. But um, I'm guilty of.
- 32:46Speaker 1: As I get down to the to the tail end
- 32:49Speaker 1: of my ballot, I'm finding out about the things I
- 32:54Speaker 1: wasn't aware of, Like I'm like home at what I
- 32:58Speaker 1: have that feeling a lot. It'll be like, uh, what
- 33:01Speaker 1: do they call? Uh like some new like very complex
- 33:06Speaker 1: like tobacco taxation issue? Right, that's how can there be
- 33:16Speaker 1: twenty levies that I have to think about right now? Yeah?
- 33:18Speaker 1: And I'm torn between m I always get torn between. Um.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I could sit it out because which is really the
- 33:25Speaker 1: responsible thing to do because I have no idea what
- 33:28Speaker 1: it is talking about. Or I could try to like
- 33:31Speaker 1: read real quick and make like a snap judgment in
- 33:34Speaker 1: order to weigh in. But I feel like I'm just
- 33:36Speaker 1: not educated on the issue. And then they have these
- 33:41Speaker 1: ballot supplements, right, and the each side gets to like
- 33:45Speaker 1: agree on a pro con and it's sort of like
- 33:50Speaker 1: everybody agrees that it's a fair synopsis of the issue.
- 33:55Speaker 1: What did you guys have to go through that process,
- 33:57Speaker 1: like what's the what's the what's the the why not
- 34:00Speaker 1: in the ballot supplement? Yeah, so maybe we're not as
- 34:04Speaker 1: cordial back home, Like I I got to present my opinion,
- 34:07Speaker 1: they got to present theirs, but we didn't like compare
- 34:09Speaker 1: notes and song. But they're always very I feel that
- 34:13Speaker 1: they're um, they're very I should say that they're very measured.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Like it seems like someone is in there because you
- 34:20Speaker 1: wouldn't be able to be in there, like you know
- 34:21Speaker 1: those little flyers you get for candidates. He loves China
- 34:24Speaker 1: and hates America, right, like that wouldn't be in that
- 34:28Speaker 1: wouldn't be in the They would find another way to
- 34:31Speaker 1: articulate it. You know. He hates babies. Yeah, no, I
- 34:35Speaker 1: we have that same thing, you know. And I do
- 34:37Speaker 1: need to say I am grateful that you didn't have
- 34:40Speaker 1: like a third method, which is like any menimighty mole.
- 34:42Speaker 1: So that's you know, that means you are and I
- 34:46Speaker 1: might be killed. I might, but the last time I
- 34:50Speaker 1: chose c H. I don't want to be predictable. Yeah
- 34:53Speaker 1: you know, so I we'll just pretend that you're you know,
- 34:57Speaker 1: A and B or your only options. But um, we
- 34:59Speaker 1: do have that as a smidget. But I'm I'm hoping,
- 35:02Speaker 1: like before this podcast, you probably didn't know anything about
- 35:06Speaker 1: this hunt right and hunting fish in the state of Utah.
- 35:09Speaker 1: But what what does your heart tell you? You know what,
- 35:12Speaker 1: what do you believe? And I'm hoping that there's that
- 35:14Speaker 1: little moment in time in the in the ballot box
- 35:17Speaker 1: or at the kitchen table when you're filling your circles
- 35:19Speaker 1: there it's just a feel good, you know what, boom,
- 35:23Speaker 1: and we're gonna go with that. That's my hope. There
- 35:25Speaker 1: is going to be obviously this and some other sort
- 35:27Speaker 1: of orchestrated like here's get out the vote and let's
- 35:30Speaker 1: make sure we're supporting this, But at a fundamental level
- 35:32Speaker 1: in my state, that's something I think we still cherish,
- 35:35Speaker 1: that heritage, that opportunity. So I think that's going to
- 35:38Speaker 1: pick up people, you know, or we roll the dice
- 35:41Speaker 1: with a P or C. So anyway, well, we'll see
- 35:45Speaker 1: how it goes. Do you are are you a career politician?
- 35:47Speaker 1: Were you gonna say something? I was just gonna so
- 35:49Speaker 1: the language is really clear on your ballot right, what's
- 35:51Speaker 1: is there a number associated with us? Like we need
- 35:53Speaker 1: to advertise this gosh, I think we're g so like
- 35:57Speaker 1: we're down to the whole yeah, yeah, yeah, yea yeah.
- 36:02Speaker 1: So it's like, you know, I shot for a and
- 36:04Speaker 1: I didn't get it, but there's four or five on
- 36:05Speaker 1: the ballot um otherwise um, But yeah, I I before
- 36:10Speaker 1: a sleepy voter or for Steve Um cruising through to
- 36:15Speaker 1: the bottom of his ballot. The language is very clear.
- 36:18Speaker 1: This is the right hunting fish boom and you'll see that.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Hunt it down, hunt it down, and and love America
- 36:24Speaker 1: and the great State of Utah and support that amendment.
- 36:27Speaker 1: That's kind of what we're going for. What else throws
- 36:29Speaker 1: me on the ballots is when you get down to
- 36:30Speaker 1: the part where you're like voting for a judge but
- 36:32Speaker 1: it doesn't seem as anyone running against him. I'm always
- 36:36Speaker 1: torn too, because I'm like, there there's anybody running against them.
- 36:41Speaker 1: You might as will make them feel good and write
- 36:42Speaker 1: there named out see. But here's here's the thing. At
- 36:45Speaker 1: that point, it you're not responsible like all those people
- 36:49Speaker 1: who were who could have ran for judge and didn't.
- 36:53Speaker 1: That's where the blame is. So you just go with
- 36:55Speaker 1: what you've got before you that that whole who's screwed up?
- 36:58Speaker 1: Isn't you in the ballot box that point, it's whoever
- 37:01Speaker 1: you know didn't step up and run, or or maybe
- 37:04Speaker 1: it really is just a good judge. Don't don't, don't
- 37:07Speaker 1: harbor any guilt on that. That's all I'm trying to say.
- 37:09Speaker 1: But he's so just like, has such an impeccable career
- 37:12Speaker 1: he or she that there's just no one could even
- 37:13Speaker 1: remotely challenge. Yeah, that one, that one's not on you
- 37:16Speaker 1: just go with it. Just go with it. Do you
- 37:17Speaker 1: do you imagine you're gonna become a career politician? Oh, man,
- 37:20Speaker 1: I hope not. Everybody. Don't do the false modesty, false
- 37:24Speaker 1: bashful ship. Every politician says that. I'll tell you one
- 37:28Speaker 1: that didn't, though. I think I remember we had Wyoming's
- 37:32Speaker 1: former governor we talked about a minute ago. Matt Meat
- 37:34Speaker 1: was on the show once and he was turning out
- 37:37Speaker 1: as governor and I was like, so, what are you
- 37:39Speaker 1: gonna do next? He's like nothing, I'm done doing politics.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, come on, this is like a
- 37:43Speaker 1: it'll be like a week and you'll be But I
- 37:46Speaker 1: think he actually meant it like he quit. He's done,
- 37:50Speaker 1: unless he pops up. But I mean I was, like
- 37:52Speaker 1: I thought it was he was doing the old like
- 37:54Speaker 1: you know, act like keeping a secret or whatever. But
- 37:58Speaker 1: it seems like he just full um stop, he's done.
- 38:03Speaker 1: That's my dream, you know. I want my if if
- 38:06Speaker 1: my place could be fully productive in my ranch running,
- 38:10Speaker 1: that's what I want at the end of all this. Like,
- 38:13Speaker 1: so my wife and I bought our place. It's not inherited.
- 38:15Speaker 1: We didn't come we both grew up in it, but
- 38:17Speaker 1: bought our own place. Uh, that to me is more important,
- 38:20Speaker 1: you know. And I've got a couple of people off man,
- 38:22Speaker 1: oh man, it's it's Uh. I think I like to gamble,
- 38:27Speaker 1: but I don't really gamble is not really legal. It's
- 38:29Speaker 1: not legal in the state of Utah. So I think
- 38:31Speaker 1: farming sort of supplements that itch. Uh. But yeah, so
- 38:35Speaker 1: that that's for me, the big thing, you know, I'm
- 38:37Speaker 1: happy to serve. I actually before I ran for office,
- 38:41Speaker 1: I I made the poor life decisions of working as
- 38:44Speaker 1: a staffer in politics. So I worked in d C
- 38:46Speaker 1: for a little while and when this seat that I
- 38:49Speaker 1: currently hold came open, it was like, well, I think
- 38:51Speaker 1: I could help out. I kind of have been through
- 38:53Speaker 1: this mess before maybe I can do a few things,
- 38:56Speaker 1: but I you know, I'd like to do a few
- 38:58Speaker 1: terms and then if there's something else whatever, But my
- 39:01Speaker 1: preference would be farming, hunting, and fishing, because this really
- 39:05Speaker 1: screws up with the things that I like to do.
- 39:08Speaker 1: How many, how many of how many of you are there?
- 39:09Speaker 1: How many people around the state in what the state?
- 39:16Speaker 1: So like, there's only one, Casey Snyder, if that's what
- 39:19Speaker 1: you're asking, there's only one. Only put in national terms
- 39:22Speaker 1: real quick first, since the people understand or help me
- 39:25Speaker 1: and the listener to understand, like we all know that,
- 39:28Speaker 1: you know, we have whatever three hundred and sixty four
- 39:31Speaker 1: whatever the hell it is. Congress congressman congresswomen in washingtond c.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Represent the country, and we have a hundred senators to
- 39:38Speaker 1: from each state. You could have a state like all
- 39:41Speaker 1: states get to a lot of states. You might only
- 39:43Speaker 1: have one representative, or the state might like like you
- 39:46Speaker 1: have twenty depending on population and land mass, I think,
- 39:50Speaker 1: But then you have your state version, right, and it's
- 39:53Speaker 1: a way different job. It's way better. I can go
- 39:57Speaker 1: home at night and I only have to do this
- 39:58Speaker 1: for a couple of months. Yeah, And but I didn't
- 40:01Speaker 1: realize it's it's like it's not quite but like it's
- 40:04Speaker 1: almost sort of a voluntary Yeah, like you guys aren't
- 40:07Speaker 1: like breaking it in. I only get paid January, February
- 40:11Speaker 1: and part of March when I'm there, and so everything
- 40:13Speaker 1: else is sort of on my my dime. Uh. And
- 40:16Speaker 1: even then when you're down there, it's like, you know,
- 40:19Speaker 1: I probably can stay home and make more money. But yeah,
- 40:21Speaker 1: it's kind of a pure form of politics the state
- 40:24Speaker 1: the to serve at the state level. But but I
- 40:27Speaker 1: actually think that's a good thing, you know, so so
- 40:31Speaker 1: it puts the it changes the incentives. Right, So maybe
- 40:34Speaker 1: in d C. If if I'm gonna go make a
- 40:36Speaker 1: hundred fifty k, heck, y'all'll run for Congress, right or
- 40:38Speaker 1: I'll be a senator. And you don't see what happens
- 40:41Speaker 1: in the legislature where in our capital when you're making
- 40:43Speaker 1: like ten or twelve thousand dollars a year and you
- 40:46Speaker 1: got to do this, I bet this takes at least
- 40:48Speaker 1: thirty hours a week for me, Like you're gonna do
- 40:51Speaker 1: it because you legitimately feel like it's service, you know,
- 40:55Speaker 1: like I'm not getting rich and and frankly, I doubt
- 40:58Speaker 1: I'm going anywhere after this. So it's it's literally a
- 41:02Speaker 1: chance for me to go and say, hey, neighbors, what's
- 41:05Speaker 1: important to you? How can I how can I impact
- 41:07Speaker 1: this in a positive way? You know? And and I
- 41:09Speaker 1: think that trickles down like how much look at a
- 41:12Speaker 1: county commissioner, look at a mayor, look at a city councilperson,
- 41:15Speaker 1: right like those you're looking at a county commissioner. And
- 41:17Speaker 1: see that's what I'm saying, Like, that's that service, right
- 41:20Speaker 1: like and and and and proof of that is? What? What?
- 41:23Speaker 1: What's your incentive at the end of this. No, it's
- 41:25Speaker 1: like I feel like I can make a positive impact
- 41:27Speaker 1: on my community. I'm gonna step up and do my time. Uh.
- 41:30Speaker 1: At the end of this, nobody's gonna know my name.
- 41:32Speaker 1: I I call down the city offices. I represent about
- 41:35Speaker 1: seven towns in my little valley, how many about thand
- 41:41Speaker 1: decent size. But I'll call the city of Hey and
- 41:45Speaker 1: they all love me, I'm sure. Uh. But see, I'll
- 41:48Speaker 1: call the city office and I'll say, Hey, this is
- 41:49Speaker 1: Casey Snyder. I'd like to rent a room for the
- 41:52Speaker 1: afternoon to have a town hall or you know, just
- 41:54Speaker 1: talk to some people and they'll be like, Okay, who
- 41:57Speaker 1: are you and that's you know, that's a that is perfect.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I love that because then it's like, oh yeah, yeah,
- 42:03Speaker 1: you know what, I'm nobody, but can I borrow the
- 42:05Speaker 1: room for the night. So do you get um, do
- 42:08Speaker 1: you get people in your constituency or super piste at
- 42:11Speaker 1: the all time? Um? Well, there are people. Clearly they're
- 42:17Speaker 1: not a majority because I'm still here right but but yeah,
- 42:20Speaker 1: I I I actually have a file um in my inbox.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Were like, people are super creative when they they're insulting you,
- 42:30Speaker 1: like some people, it's it is amazing. I'm like, gosh,
- 42:33Speaker 1: I wish I was that smart when I was mad.
- 42:34Speaker 1: I file it away and I read it back to myself,
- 42:37Speaker 1: you know, like I'm like, gosh that whenever I'm really
- 42:40Speaker 1: pissed at somebody, I'm gonna use this. I'm gonna use
- 42:43Speaker 1: email a and all the phrases that were thrown at me.
- 42:46Speaker 1: That's that's so. Yeah. Yeah, I I tork a few
- 42:49Speaker 1: people off shore. I think it's part of the deal.
- 42:51Speaker 1: And you get you get dragged into stuff um that
- 42:55Speaker 1: you probably don't have any background in though. Uh yeah,
- 43:00Speaker 1: you know, I think there's look, I I know where
- 43:02Speaker 1: my lane is. Like if you ask me about cows
- 43:05Speaker 1: or hunt and fishing or you know, natural resources generally, yeah,
- 43:08Speaker 1: I think I can articulate an answer, but you know,
- 43:10Speaker 1: you put me on some of these social issues and
- 43:12Speaker 1: like urban housing, it's like, uh, I live on a farm.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Like how am I supposed to know what good state
- 43:19Speaker 1: policy is for high density housing? You know? So, yeah
- 43:23Speaker 1: that happens. What are you do in those cases? You know,
- 43:25Speaker 1: I call an expert, you know what? What Like you
- 43:28Speaker 1: find a constituent who's got background in it. You know,
- 43:31Speaker 1: you you do your research and you hope you make
- 43:33Speaker 1: an educated and informed decision when it's your time to vote.
- 43:36Speaker 1: The one thing with the legislature or in city government
- 43:38Speaker 1: or county government, any form is like you gotta vote
- 43:42Speaker 1: like it's yes or no on this and and you
- 43:45Speaker 1: may not be all the way prepared, but you know
- 43:47Speaker 1: you can't chicken out like put up or shut up
- 43:51Speaker 1: kind of a deal. You're there? Yeah, Well, everybody other
- 43:52Speaker 1: people in an exact same situation. You could have someone
- 43:55Speaker 1: in your state, someone coming out of a maybe has
- 43:57Speaker 1: a background in urban development and the weighing and on
- 44:00Speaker 1: egg issues, and no one would no one like thinks
- 44:03Speaker 1: the question right? Well, you know, I think all of
- 44:07Speaker 1: us have a good sense for Uh well, I'm I
- 44:11Speaker 1: grew up in agriculture, so I have a master's degree
- 44:14Speaker 1: in bol I don't know if I can say it
- 44:16Speaker 1: on the podcast. Um so yeah, but I think everybody
- 44:21Speaker 1: kind of knows, right, Like if you're an expert matter
- 44:24Speaker 1: and you you get somebody from downtown telling you how
- 44:26Speaker 1: to you know, commenting on an agg bill, like somebody
- 44:30Speaker 1: with a John Deer hat might step up and say,
- 44:32Speaker 1: all right, folks, let's let's tell it taste straight. And
- 44:35Speaker 1: you know, the same thing happens on my end if
- 44:36Speaker 1: I'm totally out left field on something I have no
- 44:39Speaker 1: business or no idea waiting into like somebody's gonna call
- 44:42Speaker 1: you out. And so that's the balance, like make informed decision,
- 44:45Speaker 1: make come up, do your homework, be educated on an issue.
- 44:49Speaker 1: But no, I'll just make crap up Like that's that's
- 44:51Speaker 1: poor policy. Do you think there's any um, what do
- 44:55Speaker 1: you think would happen if someone try to do a
- 44:57Speaker 1: right to hunt and fish bill for the US man?
- 45:02Speaker 1: I don't know. Listen, I bet I can't picture if
- 45:04Speaker 1: it would. I bet it wouldn't pass. You know what
- 45:09Speaker 1: the I don't know. The most wonderful thing about being
- 45:12Speaker 1: in the state legislature is I don't really care what
- 45:15Speaker 1: happens in DC, you know, like that world is so
- 45:20Speaker 1: screwed up an upside down right now, Like I don't uh,
- 45:24Speaker 1: I don't know. You know what's going to pass. So
- 45:26Speaker 1: the right to hunting fish in the state of Utah,
- 45:28Speaker 1: that's what's going to happen there coming up in a
- 45:30Speaker 1: few days, thirty days whatever, thirty four days just right
- 45:33Speaker 1: around the corner. I had this guy telling us one time,
- 45:36Speaker 1: there's this this historian, Um, I'm friends with the studies
- 45:40Speaker 1: like demographics and perceptions of hunting and the way hunting
- 45:44Speaker 1: gets covered in media and newspapers and things, and and
- 45:48Speaker 1: he was explaining to me that depending on how you
- 45:51Speaker 1: word it, Okay, you can word it approval of hunting
- 45:56Speaker 1: and fishing two Americans in a way that there's overwhelm
- 46:00Speaker 1: laming approval m. So basically to the effect of if
- 46:04Speaker 1: you go to Americans and you say, um, do you
- 46:07Speaker 1: support like regulated hunting and fishing and formed by you know,
- 46:16Speaker 1: biological input about wherever? Okay, and really sup it up
- 46:22Speaker 1: lay the whole thing out. Support of hunting actually is
- 46:26Speaker 1: higher now than it wasn't the eighties. The minute you
- 46:31Speaker 1: put any particular to it, it starts to fall apart. Well,
- 46:35Speaker 1: any like any little deep if the minute you add
- 46:38Speaker 1: a detail like um, you know whatever, you go like,
- 46:42Speaker 1: do you support you know, hunting deer or the boat. Also,
- 46:46Speaker 1: it's just like it just goes off like people sort
- 46:50Speaker 1: of they're like, yeah, I get it at a high level,
- 46:52Speaker 1: I get it, but don't I don't. I don't like
- 46:54Speaker 1: the little nitty gritty's. I don't like like things that
- 46:58Speaker 1: spell out like what exactly I'm saying I support? Why
- 47:02Speaker 1: don't we have this conversation before I ran my memy?
- 47:05Speaker 1: You know, like, how do how do I know if
- 47:07Speaker 1: through the eyes of history this is I wrote the
- 47:09Speaker 1: right thing down on the belt. We should have talked
- 47:11Speaker 1: before I know I went to all that. I think
- 47:13Speaker 1: you should have gone crazy crazy strip because in your
- 47:17Speaker 1: state yet strike while the iron's high, and like you
- 47:21Speaker 1: have a state that has that, Like it's very I
- 47:25Speaker 1: would from a distance, I would say it's like very supportive. Yeah,
- 47:28Speaker 1: we're red. We're very supportive of hunting and fishing rights,
- 47:32Speaker 1: very supportive of gun rights, right, So I would be
- 47:35Speaker 1: doing crazy stuff right now to lock it in, and
- 47:38Speaker 1: I'd be like, I'd have a trapping bill man. You know,
- 47:42Speaker 1: I the legislative session is starting here at the end
- 47:46Speaker 1: of January. If you want to talk about anything to
- 47:48Speaker 1: move down there and run many what do you guys make?
- 47:52Speaker 1: You know, you might want to take a lot of
- 47:54Speaker 1: zeros off of that, but you'll, you know, go with that.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Uh again, how many state legislator legists? Why can't I
- 48:02Speaker 1: say this word where it's a legislator legist. I'm a
- 48:05Speaker 1: legislator serving in the legislat churches? Yeah, so how many
- 48:10Speaker 1: of us are there? And I think they're hunting for
- 48:13Speaker 1: so on that senators and and representative. So I'm I'm
- 48:17Speaker 1: just a lowly representative. I'm not a you know, a
- 48:20Speaker 1: mighty senator like they across the hall over there. But
- 48:23Speaker 1: you know, in your terms up, you just finished your
- 48:25Speaker 1: first term. Yep, did anybody challenge you in the first time?
- 48:29Speaker 1: So I had an opponent in so I'm a Republican.
- 48:33Speaker 1: I had a Democratic opponent. Um, I have another Democratic
- 48:38Speaker 1: opponent this fall. Um. The Galhorana gets me last last
- 48:43Speaker 1: fall is she's awesome she's a really great lady. She's
- 48:46Speaker 1: actually the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor our ticket. Um,
- 48:51Speaker 1: you guys ain't going to smear you guys, you know,
- 48:54Speaker 1: and you can't paign for she probably you know, it's
- 48:59Speaker 1: a toss up hood on a better job. Clearly we
- 49:01Speaker 1: believe a different things. She's a lot nicer than I am,
- 49:03Speaker 1: I'm sure, um, but we had a great race. I
- 49:08Speaker 1: I won about the vote down there. So we're my
- 49:12Speaker 1: little part of the world's very conservative. Um, I have
- 49:16Speaker 1: another lady who's running against me this year, and I
- 49:19Speaker 1: you know, I'm I'm optimistic will be okay. But either way,
- 49:22Speaker 1: I the way I like to do things back home
- 49:25Speaker 1: and in Cash Valley where I'm from, is you know,
- 49:27Speaker 1: we look, we've got to get along. And I clearly
- 49:30Speaker 1: have a set of things I believe in. But I
- 49:32Speaker 1: think there's there's good people and good ideas in the
- 49:35Speaker 1: whole world and I I I feel like, um, one
- 49:38Speaker 1: of the things that I did in my last race.
- 49:39Speaker 1: So I don't know if you want to go off
- 49:40Speaker 1: on this tangent. It's a little bit of a tangent. No,
- 49:43Speaker 1: if it has to do with um. Uh, this is
- 49:47Speaker 1: like to Get out the Vote episode. Yeah, let's just yeah,
- 49:49Speaker 1: let's go. And it has to do with how part
- 49:51Speaker 1: is in politics has rippen the country part. But then
- 49:54Speaker 1: someone can point to an area where it's not. That's great, Okay,
- 49:56Speaker 1: we'll go with that, where the world's where the whole
- 49:58Speaker 1: country is not gonna burn alive. And you know, so
- 50:01Speaker 1: one of the things that was really important to me
- 50:02Speaker 1: was that it's you know, in the face of what
- 50:04Speaker 1: I think is, uh, we should all be embarrassed about
- 50:09Speaker 1: where the state of our current national politics are. We
- 50:11Speaker 1: should all legitimately be embarrassed. And so when I ran
- 50:15Speaker 1: last session, I actually wrote an editorial that basically said this,
- 50:19Speaker 1: the person running against me is a great person. And
- 50:22Speaker 1: you look at all the stuff that she's done. She's
- 50:24Speaker 1: done a fabulous job. She she pushed for some propositions
- 50:27Speaker 1: that passed, and they were they were um fundamentally motivated
- 50:31Speaker 1: because she lost. It was on healthcare, and she lost
- 50:33Speaker 1: her mother to cancer and watched that happen and watched
- 50:36Speaker 1: all the money she had to spend. So she was
- 50:38Speaker 1: advocating from a real position, and she did a really
- 50:41Speaker 1: good job. And we may have differed on the particulars,
- 50:43Speaker 1: but she was sincere in her beliefs, and that's what
- 50:45Speaker 1: I articulated, and I said, look, we are She's a
- 50:48Speaker 1: good person. We just have a different, fundamental different view
- 50:51Speaker 1: on some key issues, and that's the difference. And like,
- 50:54Speaker 1: why can't we just talk about these differences or or
- 50:58Speaker 1: heaven forbid, find ways to weigh through those differences in
- 51:01Speaker 1: a way that's going to be beneficial to our to
- 51:03Speaker 1: our whole community, you know. And that's I feel like
- 51:07Speaker 1: we've stepped up and done that in our little part
- 51:08Speaker 1: of the world. I don't believe at a fundamental level
- 51:11Speaker 1: politics has to be a zero sum game. I think
- 51:14Speaker 1: we let it be that way, and I think we're
- 51:16Speaker 1: letting national leaders create this narrative that it's us against them,
- 51:21Speaker 1: and I don't think it has to be that way.
- 51:23Speaker 1: I think you can literally stand on your principles and say, look,
- 51:27Speaker 1: this person, I do not disagree or I do not
- 51:29Speaker 1: agree with them on all these issues. There's probably a
- 51:32Speaker 1: whole bunch we do, there's probably whole bunch of we don't,
- 51:34Speaker 1: but that doesn't change who they are as a person.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I think we've got to get past where we're at now.
- 51:38Speaker 1: So if you're getting out to vote, or you're supporting
- 51:40Speaker 1: a candidate or whatever you're doing. Like, let's in your
- 51:43Speaker 1: own neighborhood, in your own way, and you know, county
- 51:45Speaker 1: council or whatever you're doing. I let's push that debate.
- 51:49Speaker 1: That that's a ground swell I'd like to see is
- 51:52Speaker 1: where we start treating each other like Americans, like people
- 51:56Speaker 1: and just have debates about issues, not about right now,
- 51:59Speaker 1: all we do is have it's about who we are.
- 52:01Speaker 1: It's a waste of everybody's time. I have a six
- 52:05Speaker 1: year old in a six month old, so little little guys.
- 52:09Speaker 1: The thing I've been a little bit struggling um in
- 52:12Speaker 1: conversation with my kids is if you're like I might
- 52:18Speaker 1: be dismissive about a viewpoint that someone else would hold
- 52:23Speaker 1: in conversation and they pick up on it. Uh. I
- 52:27Speaker 1: now am oftentimes like when something some issue comes up,
- 52:32Speaker 1: I'm oftentimes trying to explain to them, like that person
- 52:37Speaker 1: believes what they believe with the same level of passion
- 52:43Speaker 1: that like you believe what you believe, Like you have
- 52:47Speaker 1: to try to get into this mindset of like when
- 52:49Speaker 1: you don't agree with someone, they're coming from something that
- 52:52Speaker 1: feels is real to them and it's not and you
- 52:56Speaker 1: can't always just have it be that they're dumb and wrong, right, right,
- 53:01Speaker 1: And it's a way bigger thing than that. They're like
- 53:04Speaker 1: they're dumb and wrong, and they're telling you something that
- 53:06Speaker 1: fundamentally they know. They would tell you they know inside note. Yeah,
- 53:12Speaker 1: and they thought that they've approached every possible way and
- 53:15Speaker 1: have come to this decision. Yeah. Weirdly we got into
- 53:20Speaker 1: this most recently around and this was like I almost
- 53:23Speaker 1: hesitate to bring this up. I'll fill this out. We
- 53:25Speaker 1: don't need to talk about it. We're talking about the
- 53:27Speaker 1: nine eleven hijackers to get to like to get into um,
- 53:36Speaker 1: if if you had somehow been able to like converse
- 53:41Speaker 1: with those individuals, their articulation of what they thought they
- 53:45Speaker 1: were doing and what they thought they were trying to accomplish,
- 53:48Speaker 1: wouldn't even you wouldn't even be able to approach it,
- 53:51Speaker 1: but they would have something that they would tell you
- 53:54Speaker 1: that they had arrived at and like the key and
- 53:56Speaker 1: even understanding something that's just like an absolute what we
- 54:00Speaker 1: would argue is like absolutely evil, absolutely wrong, the antithesis
- 54:04Speaker 1: of everything we believe in, everything we stand for. There
- 54:08Speaker 1: would still be deep down there some like explanation that
- 54:13Speaker 1: that person held, and you're never gonna combat it or
- 54:18Speaker 1: understand it without like taking the time to like like
- 54:21Speaker 1: to try to at least understand where someone's coming from.
- 54:24Speaker 1: If not, it's just like you do, you don't, you
- 54:26Speaker 1: wind up with a sort of a superficial understanding of
- 54:29Speaker 1: even the people you disagree with, like with me, Like like,
- 54:32Speaker 1: for instance, if I'm uh in an engagement with someone
- 54:36Speaker 1: who let's say it's someone who opposes the right to
- 54:38Speaker 1: hunt and fish, you know, how would I ever be
- 54:41Speaker 1: equipped two combat that? If I did never asked like
- 54:50Speaker 1: what exactly, I'm like, Oh, they just don't want us
- 54:54Speaker 1: to have fun? Right, are you really gonna get anywhere? Well?
- 54:59Speaker 1: And I think it's how much easier it is to
- 55:01Speaker 1: say you're evil or you're bad. I mean extreme examples aside,
- 55:06Speaker 1: let's just that was a horrible example. We'll go into
- 55:09Speaker 1: a narrow space about how do you get fishing? Yeah,
- 55:11Speaker 1: I want to talk about my example. Oh, man, I know,
- 55:14Speaker 1: I want to go deep. I say, it's a horrible example.
- 55:17Speaker 1: It's an extreme example. But I think in that case
- 55:19Speaker 1: being I like it came up through I don't want
- 55:22Speaker 1: to bory with how the subject came up at dinner.
- 55:25Speaker 1: This is what's your kids? They because they know about
- 55:29Speaker 1: to the site. Well, it's my ten year old, they know. Man,
- 55:33Speaker 1: there sounds like they're pretty well informed kids. Well, I
- 55:36Speaker 1: mean the older one knows that that was the thing
- 55:38Speaker 1: that I mean at this point, like people know that
- 55:40Speaker 1: that happened one day. And uh, it's an extreme example.
- 55:44Speaker 1: But it's like with kids, you sometimes have to have
- 55:46Speaker 1: extreme examples. It came up, yeah, and it's it's a
- 55:49Speaker 1: lot easier to just say this. You know this this
- 55:54Speaker 1: person they disagree with my right to hunting fish. They're
- 55:57Speaker 1: they're dumb, they're evil, they're stupid. You know, like how
- 55:59Speaker 1: am I cheesier? Is that to say? Then? You know,
- 56:02Speaker 1: they have an opinion, and it's probably based on experience
- 56:05Speaker 1: or fundamental belief in whatever they believe in. And you know,
- 56:09Speaker 1: I mean some of this stuff. Majority rules, right, that's
- 56:12Speaker 1: kind of the the are how our systems taken take
- 56:15Speaker 1: shape and how it runs anyway, so wins and so
- 56:19Speaker 1: can have a strong opinion and they're probably gonna lose
- 56:22Speaker 1: to the majority, right, Like that's just that's the sad
- 56:24Speaker 1: part of politics. But the other side of that is
- 56:26Speaker 1: and how you debate and how you engage, that's the
- 56:29Speaker 1: part you can control. You can still advocate strongly for
- 56:32Speaker 1: your position, whatever it is, and push for your belief
- 56:34Speaker 1: whatever it is, but you don't have to do it
- 56:37Speaker 1: at the expense of somebody else's opinions. And that's I
- 56:40Speaker 1: think where we should all shift fundamentally as a as
- 56:43Speaker 1: a country. But a body day sent me a text
- 56:46Speaker 1: exchange he was having with someone from Peter and I'm
- 56:51Speaker 1: reading through the tax exchange and it winds up towards
- 56:54Speaker 1: the end it takes on this tone of like really
- 56:57Speaker 1: we're talking about the same thing, like surprising how much
- 57:01Speaker 1: we sort of care about the you know, like that
- 57:04Speaker 1: from engagement that would be like okay, now, uh what exactly,
- 57:10Speaker 1: like what's the problem right, you know, instead of like
- 57:14Speaker 1: not not all the you know, just like a debate.
- 57:17Speaker 1: I run it all time, Like when you hear from people,
- 57:20Speaker 1: if if we get notes, some people who are just mad, right,
- 57:24Speaker 1: they're just mad. Oftentimes even opening up, even creating the
- 57:32Speaker 1: feeling that there's a conversation people get, the stress level
- 57:39Speaker 1: goes down in correspondence with people, I believe, you know
- 57:44Speaker 1: what one of my favorite things to do is so
- 57:46Speaker 1: if I get a really let's let's say I get
- 57:48Speaker 1: an email that's really is is nasty and mean but
- 57:53Speaker 1: not creative, right, so I can't file it away to
- 57:55Speaker 1: use later. But it's just I could tell these people
- 57:57Speaker 1: are torked off at me. I will find them in
- 58:00Speaker 1: a creepy way, right, but like with the Google or whatever,
- 58:03Speaker 1: use use the white pages. I will go and find
- 58:06Speaker 1: out where they live and I'll just knock on the
- 58:09Speaker 1: door and be like, Hi, I'm Casey Snyders. We've actually
- 58:13Speaker 1: never met in person before, but we've you know, had
- 58:16Speaker 1: correspondence through email. Let me hear your concern and I've
- 58:20Speaker 1: had You would be shocked, like the most angry, ardent
- 58:24Speaker 1: person through whatever form of communication. When you're there face
- 58:27Speaker 1: to face and just being like, tell me what's on
- 58:29Speaker 1: your mind, they'll go and and half the time it's
- 58:32Speaker 1: like looking down at their feet and like, you know,
- 58:34Speaker 1: I was just a little upset and it was late
- 58:36Speaker 1: at night, you know, and whatever. But it's just that conversation.
- 58:38Speaker 1: It's just talkative people. You figure it out. That stuff
- 58:42Speaker 1: does give me hope, man, Yeah, I should that when
- 58:45Speaker 1: all this whatever this is, COVID has made it bad too.
- 58:53Speaker 1: Everybody's cooped inside going crazy, so your mind runs away
- 58:57Speaker 1: with you. Man, I'll talk about it the r day.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Is that all I hear about is how we're all
- 59:03Speaker 1: going to kill each other and hate each other. But
- 59:06Speaker 1: then when I go about my day, I just have
- 59:10Speaker 1: like really like positive and like I understand, like how
- 59:14Speaker 1: could I still be getting away with having really positive interactions?
- 59:18Speaker 1: I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Like I just
- 59:22Speaker 1: go through, like I just run into people. I don't
- 59:24Speaker 1: know if something due at the boat launched, I'm like, hey,
- 59:27Speaker 1: he's like, hey, you want a wall? Yeah? Man, how
- 59:33Speaker 1: is that possible? He'll get there, get We didn't even
- 59:36Speaker 1: like fight about anything, you know. I think politics is terrible.
- 59:41Speaker 1: People are good fundamentally, and I think we'll get there.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Let the cameras come off of whatever is happening over there.
- 59:47Speaker 1: That's why I say, I don't even care about that.
- 59:49Speaker 1: I'll just focus on what I could control back home.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Let the cameras come off. I think fundamentally we all
- 59:55Speaker 1: like each other, even if we're like really really mad
- 59:58Speaker 1: at each other right now, That's what I think. Anyway,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: we'll see. I could be wrong. I was reading. I
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: can't remember who it was a person in healthcare policy
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: predicting that one COVID ends. I don't know if they're
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: just saying this because we still thinking, but there's gonna
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: be sort of this, uh that, this sort of collective
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: hug and niceness. Let's go with that, man, let's go.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know, but I like it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: I like it. You know, we had a little glimmer
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: that back home, so our cases were pretty low, and
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: our county decided to have the County Fair, you know,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: and it was just we're still going to go forward
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: with it, and in person, yeah, yeah, we still we
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: in Cash County. We still had the fair and the
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: rodeo and everything else. And there was no spike, you know,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: at the end of it, everything, no changes, no changes science. Yeah,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: we we didn't let the carneys in, so you know
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that there was no fairs stuff, so that was a change.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: But like it was the fair. I love the fair.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: It felt like I wanted I walked around the fair.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I'm like, just the fact that we had the fair,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: I kind of want to give people a hug, just
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: be like, you know what, it's so good to see.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: It was like kind of normal, So I think you're
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I think your health, budd He's right. You know, if
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: if my little fair was any indication about like peace
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: and love because we had a little bit of normalcy,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: I think let's go with that. Let's say he's gonna
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: be right. I fear that we'll forget how to do it,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: like how do you do it? Like how do you
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: go like that, We'll forget like how to just go
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: be around people, forget how to enjoy a live concert. Yeah,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: like like that you'd go into a bar and I'd
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: be like, why is this dude like breathing on me?
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Or you know, like I don't like I don't even
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: go into places, you know what I mean? Like I
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: don't do like extra stuff. I do the things that
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I deem kind of necessary, but I don't do um.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I don't do a lot of like extra exposure stuff
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: because I don't want to have to go. I don't
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: want to have to have someone call me and tell
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: me I got a lay low for two weeks in
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: my house. That's like what I'm worried about. You'll be
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: all right, You'll be all right. It's like, I mean,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: you know, the cliches ride a bike, right, like I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: think it's a lot easier just to be nice than
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: it is to ride a bike. I think you'll be
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: all right. I think you won't. You'll that fist bump
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: will come right back, like, you'll be beyond all right.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: You'll do it with so much more exubera. It's like
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: if you hadn't rant a bike for two years and
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: you get on and you're like, oh, this is fun.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Pedal pedal, pedal, stand up. Yeah, Like it feels so
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: good to have this drunken man spitting into my face.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I don't know where you're going when when this COVID
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: thing is over, you might be a different places, alright,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: So turn our attention now to the I don't know
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: if you realize this is a very bipart Is it
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: a fair because wan It is um uh county commissioner
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: who's a d But that's a county commissioner. So I
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: think different states to you, guys aren't in competition with
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: one another. But think Casey and I have. Yeah, I
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: think our values probably aligned. I would tell I want
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I want to tell everybody couple things because here's my
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: primary issue with I. I approaches different ways with Wanita
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: is upcoming election one was that I would just tell people,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: because it's in Missoula County, how many people live in
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Missoula County. Our census hasn't been done of a hundred
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: nineteen thousand. Maybe it's a sizeable constituency, second largest county
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: in Montana. We're kind of a big deal. Billings and
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: number one, I thought about taking this two different approaches.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I was gonna tell people it doesn't matter anything about
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: any detail about wine, it doesn't matter. Just go down
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: the ballot, get to the bottom mid probably mid range.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: I do know where they're putting it down way low.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Go down there, look for Juanita, look for Vero, vote Vero,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: use alliteration, vote Vero. Go down to the bottom, find Vero,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: and just check it. Under the assumption that most people
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: who vote in Missoula County aren't getting that far on
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: the ballot. Nothing to gives Missoula. But I just know
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: from my own habits. I often, like I said, I
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: peter her out towards the end, Like you get there,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: it's like, oh my god, the president, senators, like you're
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: all excited, and then you know a lot of people
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: just kind of leave it off. Right, What do you
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: think of this strategy, so I wanted to do where
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I just told people to go find Juanita. The details
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: didn't matter, nothing about her mattered. Just find her as
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: a favorite to me, vote vero, check the box. But
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: then I came around and I thought that I wanted
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: to share like greater detail, fantastic one. Eeda lives in
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: I don't know what you call your house, I need
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: to lives where you She lives on the ranch where
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: she was born. That's that I was a month old.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: My my folks were working on another ranch for a
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: year before they came back to the ranch. But your
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: grandfather lived there and my great grandfather. Okay, so she
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: lives where her great grandfather lived, all right on the
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: county yep Okay, same county. She lives where her great
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: grandfather lived. Her grandfather lives. And you were born on
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: some other ranch but then moved there for a month.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: And you live in kind of like a like a
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: ca I don't know what the hell? What do you?
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: What do you tell people? You live in my great
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: grandmother's banks, my great grandmother's cabin with a lot of bats. Yeah,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: not far from Rice Ridge. Where you where you were
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: in City Lake? Wanna is her property, which it's like
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Wan need his family, like Holy owns the property. But
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: the property where you live, UM is in the black
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: man is your program. It is one of one of
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: the early early block management. My grandfather was was part
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: of of bringing that to the western part of the state.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Because I think block management, Yanna, you can check this.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I think block management started on the eastern side first
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: in Montana, but came over to the west side. So
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: my my, my grant, we had problems. The story goes,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: oral tradition goes, we had problems with people cutting our fences,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: trust passing, shooting horses, what have you driving around causing
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: health you know. Um. And my grandfather decided to take
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: some of that management into his own hands. And so
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: he was running around with his mother's purse gun and
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: his in his glove, like shooting at people he thought
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: were we're trust passing or we're hunting, not how he
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: wanted them to be hunting, which is problematic. So with
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: a how up of a neighbor who is a little
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: more of a statesman, UM and working with our game warden,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: UM figure out that this is better too involve the
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: public and to have this block management program where people
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: are a little more investing because it's walking only too.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: So if you're walking in, you're not driving. It's a
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: different type of hunter. I don't hunt or fish. What
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: I mean you don't fish? Oh okay, well I fished
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: with many times. Well I need to when fishing likes
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: to uh dispatch the fish. Yeah, because I don't. I
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: don't want to. I'd rather die quickly. Man. You watch
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: we're gonna go off here. You watch a little perch
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: that's been like frozen for like four hours suddenly come
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: to life and your sink as you're scaling it. Yeah,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: there's a bad Yeah, not good. She doesn't like if
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: you thought fishing people like fishing. The boat and it's
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: flopping around in her mind would be like if you
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: had a deer flopping around in your car, put it out,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: put it out of it. You got to put it out. Yeah,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: you're the mercy killer, undersells her hunting and fishing credentials.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: I am. I'm constantly reminded that I'm not from a
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: fishing culture as well, from both these two and and
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: and and my nephew reminds me of that because I
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: I don't. I don't have the feel, you know, the
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: hook goes all the way into the fish, like in
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: its guts. Before I decided, before you're aware of this,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: before you're aware of the fishes presence on the other
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: end of your line, So you're but so yeah, so
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: back to the block management. It was just this really
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: beautiful arrangement where you'd have fish, wildlife and parks and
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: er and game more and do the management of the folks.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: My grandfather wasn't running around trying to shoot at people.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: People were respecting the landscape, respecting um the access and
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: uh not tearing fences. And of course there's also some
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: self policing going on too, which was really great because
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: you have other hunters out there. They're watching there are
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: other hunters you know, and make sure everyone's following the
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: rules and so um so we've had a lot of
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: success with our block management program. We don't have to
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: um you know, it's it's open to the public. You
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: don't have to tell us, you don't have to get permission,
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: you don't have to call us or sign up or
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: any of that. It's it's I mean, you have to
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: park with appropriate places, but you don't have to sign
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: you have to sign in. I guess no not, there's
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: no sign in black management just for people to understand
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: black management. It's a horrible name. God bless who ever
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: came up with it, But black manage it's a public
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: access program. It's like one of those names that no
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: one would ever know what you're talking about. Well, you
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: look at like the icon. There's there's a you know,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: a hunter with a rifle shaking hands with our great
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: icon icon speaks at all the rancher shaking hands at
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: a hunter. But yeah, black manages a public access program.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: So point being, you live in a place that is
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: that on a black management you, Um, when you got
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: married to my brother, you got married to my brother
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: within sight of the bones of your grandfather intentionally, yes,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: buried in the family plot. It's not a plot to pasture.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: But like a pile of rocks, yes, yes, we put
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: a pilot rocks on top of him. Yes, like right
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: there on the property. And oftentimes I know that my
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: wife told me this. You never told me this. But oftentimes,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: when you have a decision to make, is it true
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: that you go out ship? Yeah, don't talk about this, No,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: someone just a couple of days ago, is that you
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: know ed Robertson from Mountain Prairie. Anyways, it was asking
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: me the same thing. But yes, I do. Your wife
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: is very observant. I wanted it goes out to visit
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: the bones of her grandfather when she needs to make
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: a decision. Yes, and even when my brothers off hunting
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: on their anniversary, wanted to get dressed in her wedding
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: dress and goes out and sits on the rock where
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: she married my brother by herself. To be fair, his
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: brother's only missed one anniversary this year. This year we've
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: we celebrate, you know, our anniversary, put the dress on,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: get the same bouquet, some champagne, We take our vows
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: and and friends whoever's around, we stomp out to our
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: wedding rock and you know, reevaluate our vows and uh, yeah,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: that's great. And this year COVID and uh it was
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: like goats mount I don't know, some some hunting season issue.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: So my husband couldn't be there with me, so I
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: was at the rock by myself. I knew it was
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: going to happen. But yeah, yeah, point being I think
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: all that I'm only bring this out like I'm not
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: even to get into um how generous you are and
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: how well, no, now that, but how um you're a
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: wonderful aunt to my kids without any fanfare. Doesn't like kids,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: kind of lets the kids understand that she doesn't like them,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: but within that they love her because they know there's
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: no bullshit like that's a mean lady. But I like
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: her because she takes me horsebriding, gives me snacks. I
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: could tell that she's got like a like you know, yeah,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: there's a threshold there. She's cool about it. I get it.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: I love her more for it. A wonderful aunt, like
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: I think you're a great aunt. That's that's really kind
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: of you. A thing I'm pointing out all this um,
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: your generosity, compassion. Let me tell you this is my
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: favorite wanting to story. I need to get talking about
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: when you got your car crash is just making you uncomfortable? Well,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I'm I'm I'm crashing the guy. Okay, a guy destroys
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: waned his car. He turns out he doesn't even have
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: a driver's license. There has no insurance or something has
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: no insurance. No insurance. I'm on the phone with Juanita
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: being like, well, how are were you going to go
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: about sticking it to him, right, what are you gonna
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: do to go after him to get your money out
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: of him? She has interrupted our call because he's calling
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: her because she had called him to check in on
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: him and make sure he's okay. Yeah, that was I've
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: never been in a car accident before. She took pity
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: on the dude that killed her car. Yeah, but it
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: was super icy Rhodes Highway two hundred, all three of
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: you know what, um, super icy roads, and this pickup
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: truck just slid right into my face. Um it was, yeah,
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: And then she made it her responsibility to pursue to
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: make sure he was all right. I'd never been in
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: a car accident before. I mean, this is my home road,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: and um yeah, um, I couldn't get out of my car.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: I had to like crawl it through the windows. And
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: everything's dark. You know. I was worried, you know, it's
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: pitch black. I was worried that, um, someone's gonna hit
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: my car, which is black and very small on a
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: dark highway. And got out of my car, and then
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: I was wondering where I was supposed to go because
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: someone's gonna hit my car. And I was worried that
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: I was gonna get hit again. Um, someone came and
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: pick me up. And then we turned around to go
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: find the guy who hit me because I wanted to
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: make sure that they were okay. And uh the first
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: thing we did was when we saw each other, we
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: gave each other a big hug. And I value that
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: so much, not just because now we're talking and we're
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: in COVID, this is it just happened almost a year ago,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: but uh yeah. And then he worked up in Seeley Lake.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: He yeah, and he was telling me he didn't have insurance,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: and I was like, dude, keep quiet because there's other
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: people around. But we were just so grateful both of
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: us were okay and and uh yeah, and I didn't.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: I know he had stuff going on and tough gig,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: and I was, I have insurance, he doesn't, and I'm not.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I mean, he's gonna go get insurance. I don't. I
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: don't need to say I can tell you one thing
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna do. Yeah, we we and we we kept
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: in touch, but there was no need to wreck his
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: life and mean, man, he's my neighbor. Like yeah, point being,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: I think when I just want to implore people, and
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: this is the only this is only of the three
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: hundred how many million people are in America right now,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: sixties some. I was just gonna say, read at three
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: several hundred million individuals in America, one thirty thousand of them,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: we'll encounter your name on the ballot. Vote Vara, And
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not getting into the I don't even
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: know what the hell the issues are in your county.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: I don't really care. But I know that, um, in
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: terms of how you conduct your life and the connection
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: you have to the land where you live and your
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: compassion for the landscape and the people around you, I
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: have a feeling, I'm saying this to the voters out there,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: I have a feeling that you will take your responsibilities
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: seriously and do well by the individuals who put their
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: faith in you to make good decisions. You're gonna make
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: me christ. Yeah. So when you go to vote, go down,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: and like that's your person. Nothing to say bad about
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: the person running against you, But that is who I
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: want if I was living in that damn county, That's
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: what I wanted from my county commissioner. That's that's well said.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: And um, I can't I can't disagree with you, and
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: I think it's like what case he was saying earlier,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: we're talking about our local politics. It's it's not what
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: you hear at the national level, like our our local issues.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I mean, this is just this is community members looking
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: out for each other. This is the decisions we make,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: is to make our community better place to live and
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: raise our kids. I don't even have kids, but I
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: care deeply about all of your kids and kids and
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: yeah that we have here. It sounds so corny, but um,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: so corny, but cares about kids in the way that
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: going out fishing, she would say, Um, what are these
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: little people supposed to eat all day? No one has
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: considered this something like that. Yeah, that's that's fair. Also, selfishly,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: I like to eat, and so I was wondering what
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I was going to be eating too. So yeah, no,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: it's um. And Casey alluded to this earlier. This is
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: an honor and it's a huge responsibility. Case is not
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: doing this for money. Um, and uh, it is just
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: a it's a it's an honor. And when you really
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: love a place, and I you know, you love Utah
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: and I love Montana and even more Missoula County. The
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: more I learned about it. Um, it's uh, yeah, it's
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: an honor to be asked. So I was appointed and
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: then UM, so now I have to run to finish
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: two get another term. Um and uh yeah, when you
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: feel ready and folks believe in you and like like
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: you've said, UM, yeah, it's it's pretty exciting to take
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: that step. Yeah. I think it's helpful to you to
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: talk about right now, just to have a couple I
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: wanted to have a couple of people in um who
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: have issues, but just in some way help bring up
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: the idea that like the people involved in politics and
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: like when you go to vote that um, thankfully, there's
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: just it's individual like it's individual Americans. Uh, for the
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: most part, I would venture to guess individual Americans who
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: are hoping to like do a good job. Absolutely absolutely yep.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: So on November three, whatever day after the election, you
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: can do it right now, and when are in flames,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: when our cities are in flames, we'll look back on
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: this conversation today and try to remember there there are
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: some there's good folks out there working for us, and
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: I think it's important to remember that. And again, it's
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: it's it's local like forget about the national noise and
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: and remember the yeah the action rubber meets the road
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: locally and county commissioner. Honestly, I don't think it really
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: matters what party were from. I mean, it's we deal
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: with such a broad range and whether it's someone complaining
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: about neighbors dogs versus like our you know, what's the
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: correct pavement recipe, um to to our budget? You know, Um,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: it's a it's a broad broad range. Yeah. I follow
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: along on Instagram. It seems like when you post some
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: stuff about being a commissioner, you're always like off doing
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: like things that you probably never thought you'd be learning about. Right,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: But workings of a county it's fantastic and and it's
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: weirdly like the ranch. You know. It's like the ranch,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: you know, it's this amazing place. Your ranch probably the
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: same thing. It's like there's never enough you know, JB.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: Weld and duct tape and bailing twine to like hold
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: the place together. But somehow it works. And Missoula County
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: it's amazing staff and amazing engage citizens who who really care,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: and um that's what that's what makes it special. Um,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: So I'm I'm man and we've got some crazy challenges
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: to deal with because we're a large county in a
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: complicated county. Um and yeah, we have urban Missoula, which
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: is very different from a largely like rural the rest
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: of the county. I mean you spent time up and
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: see the lakes. Yeah, it's um, there's some tension there.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: And but that's why I yeah, I think that this
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: particular commission of which I'm part of, I think we
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: represent that tension well in in a in a positive way.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Um and uh yeah, I think we can demonstrate some
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: can do and even a little joy, which isn't a
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: word you hear and politics at all. Well, I wanna
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: um again, thank you guys both for coming on. I
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: wanted to zero Missoula County Commission. This is your first
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: up as you got appointed. Now you gotta go win. Yeah,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: this wasn't on my radar at all. I mean, Casey,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: you've been you've been in the scene for a while.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: This was this came out of left field for me.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: It makes a series of poor decisions and then you
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: end up with a bad opportunity and oh yeah you
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: gonna are you gonna be governor? No? No, no, I
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: like where I live. Yeah, that's right. At a certain point,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: you gotta go somewhere. Yeah, if you won't move to
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: live with my brother, I'd be dismayed to become a politician.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: I was like, well, that's better than my brother. And
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Casey Snyder, who's up for re election. Is the a
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: term limit where you're at tell people your district it's
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: House District five, Cash Valley, cash Valley from the Mountain
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: Man era cash. Absolutely, yeah. Jim Bridger loved it. And
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I live in Paradise, which is aptly named you know,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: so so you can do two boats here because you
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: can find Casey Snyder fifth district, so all five you
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: or thirty thousand fighting five and that and that spread
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: out community. And then also in Utah, go find your
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: right to hunting fish thing and vote. It's yes, correct, correct, Yes,
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: you want yes, you want to be able to hunt
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: and fish. And if you're in one of the majority.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: The majority of states doesn't have such protections. So I
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: hope that other people will be inspired to um with
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: their free time, get that rolling in the other states,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: and I look forward to a national version. There's a
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: movement starting right here right now. I can feel it.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Right to hunt, fishing trap right right, and run hound
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: dogs right. What was the other things, Yeah, archery, hunting bears,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: bait bears, chase lions. All right, Thanks guys, I appreciate
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: you coming out. This is the bipartisant get out vote issue.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: We've introduced you to a Democrat, we've introduced you to Republican.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: If it wasn't for COVID, I'd make you guys hug.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: That'd be like they did a fist bump. Boom, they
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: did a fist bump there. It is partisanship ripping a
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: part of America right here on our podcast studio. Thanks everybody,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: Thank you,
