- 0:00Right now, we welcome into the program our pal Jeff Legwald of ESPN covering
- 0:05the Broncos and anything else that is notable and again, Jeff, uh,
- 0:09I'll I'll just go ahead and say this as a precursor station. We don't
- 0:14need to talk about anything that happened in college basketball over the weekend. Okay,
- 0:19we refused to discuss it. Yeah, I had told a friend of
- 0:24mine they were going to lose by thirty and it came almost to fruition.
- 0:30Yeah, thirty. I mean we could go thirty minutes not talking about it,
- 0:34Jeff, we could go the the you know they have thirty questions without
- 0:38Nate and jumping in, you know, the ligne. I went fifty minutes
- 0:42of real time without scoring. They did, really they did? Yes,
- 0:46kind of like you at a bar back in the day. Hey, yeah,
- 0:50that's four hours. Okay, Leggy, let's gave you the punch out.
- 0:55Did you like that? That was good? That was good? Yes,
- 1:00Enrico Palazzo, All right, Leggy, What what's the deal with Calvin
- 1:04throck Morton? Besides having the best name that I have ever seen on the
- 1:08back of a football, Jersey, tell us about Calvin throck Morton. Have
- 1:12you known many moons in your time? Yeah, it might be the first,
- 1:17but uh, you know, again a shock of shocks, the Broncos
- 1:21sign or re sign a player with New Orleans Saints roots. You know,
- 1:26I think that's like seven now in the in the off season. So again
- 1:32that you know, uh, it's like a sequel of sorts for for Sean
- 1:38Payton. And you know, this shows where they are in free agency because
- 1:42of where they are financially against the cap and all of those things, because
- 1:47you know, here's another free agent that's a very specific signing to uh to
- 1:53fit what they need, uh, you know, in terms of depth,
- 1:57and and another free agent signing who started half his career games, you know,
- 2:01a little more than half of his career games. So this is this
- 2:06is where they're at right now. They're trying to make very specific uh signings
- 2:12that they can afford and that that fit what they do and have enough experience
- 2:17uh to be there if if they need them. And you know, again,
- 2:22this was a thin team when before they even did all these financial gymnastics,
- 2:28and you know they're trying to address that the best they can and with
- 2:31with limited draft capital. Yeah, jeff it seems as though the Broncos are
- 2:37really betting on the value of familiarity while paying less money to football players that
- 2:45are out there. I don't even know if you can quantify this or or
- 2:50qualify it, but if anybody can, I know you can. What is
- 2:53the value of that for a team that is in this spot right now?
- 3:00What is the value of Sean Payton going and getting his guys? Does it
- 3:04make the Broncos better? You know, I don't. Again, their their
- 3:08talent level won't be what it was last year. Maybe the incoming are not
- 3:14matching the outgoing right now in terms of experience. Now, maybe they get
- 3:17a career year from one or two of these guys and then we're we're framing
- 3:23it differently. But right now, on paper, uh, you know,
- 3:28the incoming players are not as talented is the ones that left. And I
- 3:34think you know, they're trying to sort of cut the developmental corner that you
- 3:38would have if you had sort of a homegrown, draft built team. They're
- 3:44sort of trying to create a big, you know, piece of the pie
- 3:47chart that's quote unquote homegrown just somewhere else. You know a lot of former
- 3:53Saints who know what he wants and what he's looking for and you know,
- 3:59within enough experience to be productive guys if they're thrown in there. But I
- 4:04think Brandon Jones is really the only free agent you know, that they've they've
- 4:10sort of signed and maybe you know in the defensive line, but you know,
- 4:15I think Jones is really the only guy they've signed who they look at
- 4:19as unquestioned starter level in all of this. And you know that that just
- 4:26shows you where they're at. And again, it's part of the price tag
- 4:30of the decisions they've made. And you know, we don't know if they're
- 4:33right or wrong yet. We just don't. But you know they're they need
- 4:38all of these guys to play at the the absolute highest level they've been at
- 4:43for this to work. Oh, Jeffrey, Jeffrey, Jeffrey. All right,
- 4:49where are we at with the quarterback shuffle? I'm starting to see more
- 4:51reports as to you know, maybe Jayden Daniels is becoming number two. A
- 4:56couple of guys on your very network have suggested maybe he's I gonna supplant Caleb
- 5:00Williams' number one. Drake May's rising and falling. What do you make of
- 5:05all this? As far as these top three quarterbacks, and and who do
- 5:11you think Like with JJ McCarthy, we've we've talked a ton about him.
- 5:15You seem to buy the hype that he'll be in the top ten after this
- 5:17run. But what do you think is going on with the top three,
- 5:19Because again I continue to see stories and I think Daniel lask Orlowsky's leading the
- 5:25charge of Daniels possibly being number two and may sneak into number one. I
- 5:30think Daniels is the clear number two when you talk to people around the league,
- 5:33and you know, as always, uh, well we'll never know the
- 5:39exact number, but there are teams that have him as QB one, So
- 5:44uh, you always have to temper draft talk with you know, what's being
- 5:48said out in the media and then what's actually happening in the in the war
- 5:54rooms as it were. You know, the draft boards never matched the public
- 6:00hype on players. You know, the quarterbacks haven't moved that much on the
- 6:05board. It's just they're going to get overdrafted by where they are on the
- 6:12boards. That's just a fact. So that always makes talking about them difficult
- 6:17because no team's going to select a quarterback at three and say, yeah,
- 6:21we had them at twenty six on our board, but that potentially can happen,
- 6:28certainly in this draft. And you know, I know plenty of teams
- 6:32that have only two or three first round grades on the quarterbacks no matter how
- 6:38they stack them. But they're never going to say that publicly because that's just
- 6:42not the kind of information they get out. So it's hard to discuss.
- 6:46I mean, this quarterback class is being mock draft as if it's one of
- 6:50the best in history, and I just think that's a difficult concept to wrap
- 6:57our heads around that. I don't think the talent level of this quarterback class
- 7:02is that much different than any of the last you know, eight or nine
- 7:06quarterback classes. So Leggie and again we continue to sort of live in this
- 7:11world where, all right, the Broncos going to draft up to go and
- 7:14find the quarterback of their supposed dreams or not. I want to get your
- 7:18take out of conversation Andy and I had last week. He run the show.
- 7:21Okay, so we know the Broncos desperately need an upgrade at quarterback after
- 7:26quarterback right now? What position group needs an upgrade on this team the most?
- 7:34I think the two that stick out at me are corner and edge rusher.
- 7:42You know, I think they need explosiveness at both of those positions.
- 7:46They have players they can certainly play and start in games and function, but
- 7:53they need explosiveness at those two positions and tight end. Those would be the
- 7:58three we're I think the the talent explosive. This quotient needs to go way
- 8:03up, especially tight end in this offense. You know, a tight end
- 8:09and a running back have always been important parts of the passing game for him
- 8:13in this offense, and they have not gotten that kind of production from who
- 8:18they have on the roster, and the offense won't be what it was in
- 8:24New Orleans until they do. Jeff, as far as now until the draft,
- 8:31do you think they're done? Because look, quite honestly, anythink what
- 8:35is his name? Throckmorton. I didn't see rock Morton entering our lives either.
- 8:39I think they'll be kind of quiet. Are we gonna see? And
- 8:43you've laid it out in the first answer tonight that you know this is the
- 8:46section of the they're stopping. They're shopping in the dollars section if you will.
- 8:50Free agency right now? Do you think we may see a couple guys
- 8:52added post draft? Do you think they're gonna draft and just kind of see
- 8:56what happened, Well, that would be where the veteran quarter comes from post
- 9:01draft. Possibly. Well, I think they want to. You know,
- 9:05there's no reason to jump in on any of the unsigned quarterbacks right now because
- 9:09I think they're going to be unsigned. Most or all of them will remain
- 9:15unsigned because they're going to want the best situation possible and you're not going to
- 9:20know the best situation possible if you're a quarterback or is agent until after the
- 9:24draft. So I think it'll be quiet on the quarterback front unless they just
- 9:28get the deal they with the guy they simply feel like they can't pass up.
- 9:33But they've been very public about saying another veteran is coming in at some
- 9:37point. So you know, the list is the list, so they you
- 9:43know, they know what they have to deal with. But I think they
- 9:46do want to see where they end up after the draft. But they're showing
- 9:50you a little bit what they think of the draft board by who they've targeted
- 9:56with some of these free agent depth signings. You know, most people don't
- 10:00think there are a lot of interior linemen. So that's that's today's signing.
- 10:05That's you know, that's that's dealing with that fact maybe you don't get a
- 10:09guy in the middle rounds or you don't feel like there's anybody worth taking in
- 10:16the middle rounds as if you lock in your board the way they are,
- 10:18I mean, they're they're at the point now, or they're going to bring
- 10:22all their scouts in and and do the reports, you know, one last
- 10:26time from the area scouts this week, and that'll that'll get them pretty far
- 10:31down the line as to to some of their final draft board situations. So
- 10:37that this is where they're at right now. And I think they'd like to
- 10:39see, especially a quarterback, what what unfolds in front of them, And
- 10:46you know, we we probably don't know what they think of a guy like
- 10:50Spencer Ratler, you know, Spencer Rattler and Michael Pratt from Tulane. Are
- 10:54those two guys they feel like they like and could they get them in the
- 10:58third, you know, or get into the late second and get those guys.
- 11:03That's the kind of answers they need to see what level of veteran quarterback
- 11:07you know, they would bring in after that, we're getting drafted with Jeff
- 11:11Legwald here, he joins, us on the ramos Law Hotline car accident.
- 11:15You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney ramos Law dot com. Jess.
- 11:20Being a draft boards, I want to get a little bit of insight into
- 11:22what you're thinking on the top one hundred. Do you have a favorite non
- 11:26quarterback in this draft right now? Oh? Yes, I have two.
- 11:35Actually I'll go three because I love the two receivers Marvin Harrison Junior and Malik
- 11:43Neighbors. Those are those are instant pros. You know, welcome to the
- 11:50show, have a nice day at the Pro Bowl type guys. And brock
- 11:54Virus. I just think I think it's been a long time since we've seen
- 11:58a college tight end coming in so pro ready for the modern pro game.
- 12:05And the tight end, I mean, he is a matchup problem no matter
- 12:07where you put him. I mean they have Georgia's run him out of the
- 12:11backfield even and I just think he's one of the most I think those three
- 12:16guys might be the most phenomenal athletes on the board. But you know,
- 12:22we're all talking about quarterbacks because that's how it is. But the top three
- 12:28receivers on this draft board might be the top three players in the draft.
- 12:33I love hearing Brock Bowers. Love hearing that, Leggy. I hope they
- 12:37could get him at twelve. I would not have a problem, as you
- 12:41well know, looking for a quarterback another time. If you can get up
- 12:45Rock Bowers, Jeff, what is there a player on this roster they'd be
- 12:50willing to part with? And you and I are an agreement on patzer Tansel,
- 12:54let's just take him out of the discussion. Is there a guy you
- 12:56think they'd be willing to part with that could bring him a second round pick?
- 12:58Because you know, is this time here. I try to explain it
- 13:01to people. I've seen it over and over again. Draft pick people treat
- 13:05their draft teams, Pea treat their draft picks like it's like it's gold,
- 13:09sometimes to the point where it almost makes me laugh. I'd rather have an
- 13:11experienced player sometimes than the draft pick. I think these people clutch onto like
- 13:16it's some sort of hidden you know, map to the hidden treasure or whatever.
- 13:20But do you do you knowing that maybe fans over value what a guy
- 13:24could go for. Who could they truly play? And I bring this up
- 13:28because if they hadn't trade, if they don't, if they take Bowers at
- 13:31twelve. Well, then the most likely scenario to pick up a second is
- 13:35gone because you're not trading down right, you're taking Bowers. Is there a
- 13:37guy they could trade that could bring him a second round pick? Yeah,
- 13:41that's uh, that's a high value. I mean, that's gonna take.
- 13:46That's gonna take a frontline guy at this point. I mean, you look
- 13:48at what, uh you know the Bears got for justin Fields. You look
- 13:52at some of the trades, You're not seeing that ton of value uh popping
- 13:58up. So uh, I don't think they would pass on any deal they
- 14:01thought was good, though, I will say that I don't think, you
- 14:07know, I think Sir Tan's as close to and off limits as they have
- 14:11because they've made no secret that they want to sign him to a long term
- 14:15deal and have discussed it. But I don't think they would pass up on
- 14:20anything they considered good value. You know, that added up to being a
- 14:26move they would make. So I don't think there's anything they won't look at
- 14:30in that regard. But to get it too, it's gonna be really hard,
- 14:33just because you're probably gonna have to trade that twelfth pick and go down
- 14:39to get it, you know, as sort of the part of the combination.
- 14:43But even that, you know, a late one and a three.
- 14:46Maybe the math how it works out to pend of how far down you're going.
- 14:50Serious question, is there a guy on this roster that would fetch a
- 14:54second round pick? I mean, stain would get you a first maybe two
- 14:58of them. That's that's what we've talked about, that the talent level on
- 15:05this They put themselves in a box with so much change over the last I
- 15:11think the bill. The short answer is the bill came due this year on
- 15:15all front financial, talent depth chart, you know everything, the bill of
- 15:22switching coaches and quarterbacks and even the owner and the GM over the last seven
- 15:28eight years. The bill came due this year on all fronts, and they're
- 15:35just gonna have to do the best they can to get through it. Jeff
- 15:39Lagweld, everybody, ESPN doing the best he can every time he comes on
- 15:43the Craigman and Lyndall Show. Leg you will talk to you Friday. Thanks
- 15:46buddy, Thanks Bella's take care
