- 2:19Speaker 3: going to get to some other things in the news.
- 2:21Speaker 3: And of course, one of the big stories around these
- 2:23Speaker 3: parts late yesterday afternoon, story broke of the death of
- 2:26Speaker 3: Tom McGhee, legendary broadcaster, legendary anchor person WCHS Television no
- 2:32Speaker 3: relation and WWK TV thirteen. We'll get into that, come
- 2:36Speaker 3: it up a little bit later on as well. And TJ.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Meadows will join us a little bit later on the
- 2:43Speaker 3: show to preview talk line, and he's got some breaking
- 2:45Speaker 3: news and we've talked in the past about the possibility.
- 2:50Speaker 3: You know, the Republican Party has their gathering this weekend
- 2:53Speaker 3: in Morgantown, State GOP, and there has been they've made
- 2:57Speaker 3: a change within the last couple of years where it's
- 3:00Speaker 3: could not vote in the primary, and they switch that
- 3:03Speaker 3: around to that so independence can't vote. There's been some
- 3:05Speaker 3: talk that that may be taken up and that they
- 3:08Speaker 3: may revert back to that.
- 3:10Speaker 4: TJ.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Meadows is reporting that is apparently not going to happen
- 3:13Speaker 3: at the State GOP convention this weekend. So we'll talk
- 3:15Speaker 3: to TJ and to Tom Sussman about that. Let's bring
- 3:18Speaker 3: it our good friend now, the legendary, semi legendary, almost
- 3:22Speaker 3: world famous, semi retired JK the DJ.
- 3:25Speaker 4: What's happening to Dave?
- 3:26Speaker 3: How you doing?
- 3:27Speaker 6: Man?
- 3:27Speaker 4: Hanging in there?
- 3:28Speaker 3: First time you've been here in our new studio.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yeah, it's lovely, very nice.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, we like it. We like it. That's genuine
- 3:34Speaker 3: imitation brick. Okay, So don't scoff at it. By retro fests. Yeah, baby,
- 3:39Speaker 3: it's going on this weekend city Center, Slack Positive, Downtown Charleston.
- 3:43Speaker 3: How many years you've been doing this?
- 3:44Speaker 7: Now?
- 3:44Speaker 3: This is year four, year four? All right, So tell
- 3:47Speaker 3: us what retrofest is.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Well, it's a celebration of old stuff, all right, Me
- 3:51Speaker 4: and you you know, and we fit right in. We're
- 3:52Speaker 4: in that demographic and of course retro meets something different
- 3:56Speaker 4: to just about everybody you talk to, so we can
- 3:58Speaker 4: kind of broaden the the appeal there as far as
- 4:01Speaker 4: music goes, and played it just about anybody at any time,
- 4:04Speaker 4: throughout the course of the day. Got great bands. We've
- 4:07Speaker 4: got Hair Supply going to be the headliner in the
- 4:10Speaker 4: evening from eight until.
- 4:11Speaker 3: About our guys and Hair Supply Greater.
- 4:13Speaker 4: What oh their spectacular official look the Part, Sound Apart Everything,
- 4:17Speaker 4: official party band of our sister station ninety eight seven,
- 4:20Speaker 4: The Mouth and Wild, a wonderful classic rock which almost
- 4:22Speaker 4: assures you Steve Animal is going to be there somewhere.
- 4:24Speaker 3: He's their their manager, Slash roady slash, a little bit
- 4:27Speaker 3: of everything. But I mean, I mean, the guy's in hairsply,
- 4:29Speaker 3: They've played Regatta, They've played all the big events around here,
- 4:32Speaker 3: Marty Graw whatever. They're fantastic.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Yeah, they travel. They get all over the place too, man,
- 4:37Speaker 4: all over the Eastern Sea wards.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah, and then they could play even more. It's just
- 4:40Speaker 3: that they all have full time jobs, which is so
- 4:42Speaker 3: anti rock and roll. You know, it's so anti rock
- 4:45Speaker 3: and roll. Guys, Come on, it's two establishment, Yeah, exactly.
- 4:48Speaker 4: So talk about some of the other groups you got played, well,
- 4:50Speaker 4: We've got we've got Lee Dean coming in here to
- 4:53Speaker 4: do his h his Frank Sinatra and his Elvis thing.
- 4:56Speaker 3: No, Lee very well, former co worker of mine.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yeah, right, okay, and Analog We will be there as well.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Analog Boy, Yeah, yeah, we don't know much about them,
- 5:04Speaker 4: but if you guys go to our our Retrofest page
- 5:07Speaker 4: you can learn a lot more about Analog Boy for sure.
- 5:09Speaker 4: And of course I'll be playing music in between the
- 5:12Speaker 4: band sets, and we'll have other performers there as well
- 5:16Speaker 4: as stilt walkers. Who else do we have there? We
- 5:18Speaker 4: have a Cosmic Wonderling. We have Joey Step, you know, comic.
- 5:23Speaker 4: He's a lot of fun to hang around with. He'll
- 5:25Speaker 4: be working the crowd and on stage. So Retrofest starting
- 5:28Speaker 4: at eleven am until about ten pm on Saturday. And
- 5:31Speaker 4: this stuff is free, Yeah, absolutely, except for the beer.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Well you had to pay for the beer, understood. What
- 5:38Speaker 4: else goes on with I mean other than just the music?
- 5:41Speaker 3: What else you got?
- 5:42Speaker 4: Well, like I said, we've got the the aerial list.
- 5:45Speaker 4: She calls herself Cosmic Wonderland. She puts on the heck
- 5:48Speaker 4: of a show. She also worked with us on July
- 5:50Speaker 4: fourth there at Slack Plaza and stilt walkers as well
- 5:54Speaker 4: as Joey Step comedian. He's a magician and comedian.
- 5:58Speaker 3: What kind of mender's a guy? I should have praise
- 6:00Speaker 3: that better. Yeah, no worries, No worries.
- 6:01Speaker 4: What kind of vendors, Well, we've got a broad selection
- 6:04Speaker 4: of crafts vendors, also food and beverage, and we might
- 6:09Speaker 4: even have some classic automobiles here that day.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Sweet And it's Alt City Center slack Plaza on Saturday.
- 6:16Speaker 3: And there's no charge, like you said, unless you take
- 6:18Speaker 3: part in, unless you partake of the food vendors or
- 6:21Speaker 3: the drink or whatever. Just to come out, listen to
- 6:23Speaker 3: the music, take in whatever else you get to. It's
- 6:26Speaker 3: all free of charge.
- 6:26Speaker 8: Right.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Yeah. We have plenty of stuff for the kids to do,
- 6:28Speaker 4: so it's a it's a nice, fun family event all
- 6:31Speaker 4: day long slack Plaza.
- 6:32Speaker 3: What was it that made you decide to want to
- 6:34Speaker 3: do this a few years ago?
- 6:35Speaker 4: Well, I just thought it'd be cool to have a
- 6:38Speaker 4: little festival of our own. Try to raise some money
- 6:40Speaker 4: for a good cause. We're trying to raise money for
- 6:43Speaker 4: scholarships for inner city kids. Okay, yeah, and also try
- 6:46Speaker 4: to get some money together maybe for music lessons, dance lessons,
- 6:49Speaker 4: singing lessons and things like that. We're trying to put
- 6:52Speaker 4: something together with the city. We're still waiting to hear
- 6:54Speaker 4: back from them about doing something at the rec centers,
- 6:57Speaker 4: which I was raised on as a kid. I was
- 7:00Speaker 4: in the Deep East End, spent a lot of time
- 7:02Speaker 4: at Roosevelt playing basketball, and also Knaw City rec Center. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:07Speaker 4: also the King Center.
- 7:09Speaker 9: So here the thing.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Here's the thing about retro you know, Joe, and I
- 7:12Speaker 3: think you and I talked about this last year when
- 7:14Speaker 3: you were on the show, probably the years before that
- 7:15Speaker 3: as well, is that, as you said at the top,
- 7:18Speaker 3: it means different things to different people. And I've had
- 7:22Speaker 3: this discussion a lot with people of various age groups.
- 7:27Speaker 3: One of my favorite people in the world is my
- 7:28Speaker 3: next door neighbor who's a little bit older than what
- 7:30Speaker 3: you and I are, and he's talking about, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 3: to him classic music, he said, well, it's from the
- 7:36Speaker 3: nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties. Well, okay, you and I
- 7:39Speaker 3: are both the kids of the eighties. That's retro to us.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Here's what people don't want to think about it. And
- 7:44Speaker 3: I talk about this all the time on the air.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Truly retro right now in the definition from a marketing standpoint,
- 7:50Speaker 3: two thousand and four, oh right, two thousand and five,
- 7:53Speaker 3: Snoop Dog is retro, Yes, yes, Nirvana is ten years
- 7:57Speaker 3: beyond retro, right, so that early two thousands music. Nobody
- 8:02Speaker 3: of our age wants to think that that's classic.
- 8:05Speaker 10: Now.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Yeah, we got to work that in for sure. And
- 8:08Speaker 4: that's no denying.
- 8:08Speaker 3: That's what you got to do because you have people,
- 8:10Speaker 3: I mean, I've been down there when you do this,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you got people of all ages. You get people from
- 8:13Speaker 3: their seventies and their eighties, but you also got people,
- 8:16Speaker 3: you know, you got kids down there as well, so
- 8:17Speaker 3: you got to kind of please everybody.
- 8:19Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Amen, that's a true story.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Why why is it that you think things that are
- 8:23Speaker 3: retro are so popular because it's just people wanting to
- 8:27Speaker 3: relive their glory days and want to think about the
- 8:29Speaker 3: good old days.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, nostalgia. Man, everybody's got nostalgic memories that bring
- 8:35Speaker 4: back fond memories from their childhood or even adolescent years,
- 8:40Speaker 4: even early adult years too.
- 8:42Speaker 3: So you know, I love to hear people that'll say, well,
- 8:44Speaker 3: the music of my generation was the best, and we
- 8:46Speaker 3: all think that. You and I were in the green
- 8:48Speaker 3: room talking about hair supply and talking about eighties music,
- 8:52Speaker 3: and here's the thing, even though you know, I was
- 8:53Speaker 3: a kid that grew up in the seventies and eighties
- 8:55Speaker 3: got into radio of the late nineteen eighties. Some of
- 8:58Speaker 3: the eighties music is really crap. But that's okay, it's okay,
- 9:01Speaker 3: it's just in our mind it's the best music ever.
- 9:04Speaker 3: And I'm sure that people that are fans of the
- 9:05Speaker 3: seventies music, sixties music, nineties two that they all say
- 9:08Speaker 3: the same thing.
- 9:09Speaker 4: But it can't all be good. Tim We speak about
- 9:11Speaker 4: Debbie Gibson for a moment.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Hey, easy, now, easy, undebt. I was playing that's Debbie
- 9:16Speaker 3: Gibson stuff when it was new on record. That stuff
- 9:19Speaker 3: was literally on record on record. Talk about you a
- 9:22Speaker 3: little bit, JK. You're kind of a legend around these parts.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Well, I'm famous on my street. Everybody knows me there.
- 9:29Speaker 3: It's probably because of a warrant or something. But you've
- 9:32Speaker 3: played just about every bar, festival, every dance in the
- 9:38Speaker 3: Kanaal Valley for a few years.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Now.
- 9:41Speaker 4: I do it. I can't, Yeah, I do it. I can't.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Why do you enjoyed it so much?
- 9:44Speaker 8: Man?
- 9:44Speaker 4: Let me tell you something. I remember retreating into my
- 9:47Speaker 4: bedroom with a pair of headphones and a little record
- 9:49Speaker 4: player and just zoning out to the kind of music
- 9:52Speaker 4: that I was listening to back when I was a child,
- 9:54Speaker 4: and I was like, man, this is taking me to
- 9:57Speaker 4: a different location. It was an escape for me to
- 9:59Speaker 4: listen to music felt great and I was like, man,
- 10:02Speaker 4: this is easy to get hooked on, you know. So
- 10:04Speaker 4: and the rest of it, I guess you could say, yeah, exactly.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Unlike other things, people can get that done, especially people
- 10:09Speaker 3: to do what we do for a living. So, but
- 10:12Speaker 3: you also did radio.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, on and off for the better part of
- 10:16Speaker 4: fifteen years at WVS.
- 10:19Speaker 3: We don't speak of them on me.
- 10:20Speaker 4: That's right.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I'm kidding. I'm kidd kN We're all friends behind the scenes.
- 10:24Speaker 3: We're just competitors, you know, in the real world. I'm
- 10:26Speaker 3: kidding about that. And of course we got a mutual
- 10:29Speaker 3: friend and my big brother and semi agent Burke Allen.
- 10:32Speaker 3: And yeah, I actually had Burke on the midday show
- 10:34Speaker 3: yesterday talking about conspiracy theories.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 10:38Speaker 3: The conspiracy theory with Burke is is how does he
- 10:41Speaker 3: still have the same wardrobe that he had twenty to
- 10:43Speaker 3: thirty years ago.
- 10:45Speaker 4: He's a smart guy, he's thrifty.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, that's one way to put it. That's
- 10:50Speaker 3: a nice way to say cheap.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I welcomed him to the Charleston radio market. We were
- 10:55Speaker 4: doing an event. I was in sales at that time,
- 10:57Speaker 4: also on air part time, and were holding a live
- 11:01Speaker 4: event at where Charleston Blueprint is now. That was the
- 11:05Speaker 4: Ritz Nightclub. Did you know that?
- 11:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, I mean I wasn't in in Charleston the time,
- 11:10Speaker 3: but I'm been unfamiliar with the name.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Yeah, of course. He stepped in the door, didn't even
- 11:13Speaker 4: have a chance to talk to him, got right up
- 11:15Speaker 4: on stage and hosted the Dating Game, which is a
- 11:18Speaker 4: one o two promotion for that night at the Ritz,
- 11:20Speaker 4: and he come over and sat with me during the
- 11:22Speaker 4: breaks and said, Hey, I'm Burke, I'm Joe. And that's
- 11:25Speaker 4: when the relationship.
- 11:26Speaker 3: He'd been doing radio on Huntington at the time for years. Yeah,
- 11:29Speaker 3: he was in He was in Logan too, Yeah, of course.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:31Speaker 3: And then he's been I used to be able to
- 11:34Speaker 3: do his exay was he saw Lake City, Orlando, Vegas.
- 11:40Speaker 3: He just couldn't keep a job in Northern Virginia. That's
- 11:43Speaker 3: how he's doing now. He's doing the you know, the
- 11:45Speaker 3: management thing of manager of Landau and Homer Hickham and
- 11:48Speaker 3: dreaming clients. What a gig. He does well for himself.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Where were some of the places that aren't around here
- 11:55Speaker 3: aren't around here anymore that you used to play? Well
- 11:57Speaker 3: Tops and Logan? Okay, speaking of Logan, I really loved
- 12:00Speaker 3: that bar. Good times.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Let's see your Spanky's on the boulevard downtown where Venos
- 12:06Speaker 4: is now. That was a good time. There was a
- 12:08Speaker 4: bar where Jimmy Johns is on the corner of Capitol
- 12:12Speaker 4: and Virginia Streets. Yeah, it didn't last long. Gosha did
- 12:17Speaker 4: bar one oh one, which at the time was Cheers
- 12:20Speaker 4: mul Dunes, which is where the Rock City Cake is now.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Did you know there was a bar in there? Well
- 12:26Speaker 4: you Banana Joe's probably at least I also did Banana Joe's.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Oh my gosh. You'd think i'd have bags under my
- 12:32Speaker 4: eyes from all that, wouldn't you. And guess what I do?
- 12:35Speaker 3: And you did that and you're only thirty five years old.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm sticking with that.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Yeah. And you also told me off the air that
- 12:44Speaker 3: they used to do karaoke at Bennegans.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's correct. Yeah, yeah, oh man, that place
- 12:48Speaker 4: used to rock too. They did a happy hour thing
- 12:50Speaker 4: from the beginning of the show all the way through
- 12:52Speaker 4: the end of the show. Place was packed with college kids.
- 12:54Speaker 4: We had a great time, had a little dance floor,
- 12:57Speaker 4: We're always able to fill it up. And there was
- 12:59Speaker 4: always a line of people. I'm talking thirty five or
- 13:01Speaker 4: forty people that wanted to sing every show in there,
- 13:04Speaker 4: and you'd have to wait two hours to get your turn.
- 13:06Speaker 4: It was a lot of fun.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Isn't an amazing that the more alcohol you consume, the
- 13:10Speaker 3: better you're singing gets.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Yes, and the worse your hearing gets and so the
- 13:14Speaker 4: two go hand in hand.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Right, Let's get back to retro Fest. Give us all
- 13:17Speaker 3: the to tails because you and I can sit here
- 13:19Speaker 3: and do this all day. Let's get back to retro
- 13:21Speaker 3: We should sometime at retro Fest get back to it.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Yeah Yeah, City Center slack Plausa starting at eleven am.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I'll be spending the tunes for the first hour or so.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Lee Dean comes on after that, and of course we'll
- 13:31Speaker 4: have our live music all throughout the course of the day,
- 13:33Speaker 4: and I'll be playing music in between the band breaks,
- 13:36Speaker 4: tons of eats, lots of treats. Looking forward to maybe
- 13:39Speaker 4: getting a few classic automobiles on Summer Street all shuckers
- 13:43Speaker 4: will be there. I'm going to hit the oysters for sure.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Yes, Oh, you guys are gonna have a great time
- 13:47Speaker 3: for grab stuff mushrooms. Trust me how to get the
- 13:49Speaker 3: crab stuff mushrooms? Guy in the thanks for the tip.
- 13:52Speaker 3: The crab stuff mushrooms. Perhaps I hope that hell they
- 13:54Speaker 3: have those on the food truck. And again, obviously you've
- 13:57Speaker 3: got to pay for the food and drink, as you said,
- 13:58Speaker 3: But just to come out and do people need to
- 14:00Speaker 3: bring chairs and things.
- 14:01Speaker 4: That would be very helpful. Yes, and maybe even an
- 14:04Speaker 4: umbrella of some type to shade yourself because it's going
- 14:06Speaker 4: to be pretty hot on Saturday and hopefully the rain
- 14:09Speaker 4: will hold off. Amen figures crossed.
- 14:11Speaker 3: But again, if you want to come out and just
- 14:12Speaker 3: enjoy the music and the retro vibe, all of that's
- 14:16Speaker 3: free of charge, absolutely, But if you want to have
- 14:18Speaker 3: a drink or you want to eat something, you'll have
- 14:20Speaker 3: to pay for that, obviously. The legendary JK the DJ,
- 14:23Speaker 3: glad to be here.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Thank you, Dave.
- 14:24Speaker 3: All right, we'll see it's Saturday, it's night man twenty one.

- 17:18Speaker 3: He's talking about the death of Tom McGee yesterday. Your
- 17:21Speaker 3: memories or thoughts to tomicgee.
- 17:22Speaker 10: Yeah, he was just a really good anchor. Didn't really
- 17:25Speaker 10: personally know him, but came to respect him, and I
- 17:28Speaker 10: always looked forward to the news and did a great job.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Yeah, he came here from a CNN and he was
- 17:36Speaker 3: a WCCHS television no relation and also WWK TV later
- 17:40Speaker 3: went on to become an attorney. And everybody around Charleston.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Here's what I found in the last seventeen eighteen hours
- 17:47Speaker 3: since we learned of his passing age seventy eight I
- 17:49Speaker 3: think it was, and he died in hospice care. Everybody
- 17:53Speaker 3: around Charleston seems to have a Tom McGee story.
- 17:57Speaker 10: I don't have one. You know, moved here from Backley
- 18:01Speaker 10: and just really respected the way that he anchored the news,
- 18:05Speaker 10: and it was just a quality journalist. And you could
- 18:09Speaker 10: tell the CNN training was there.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Oh he I mean, and he just looked the part.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean did he not? He just he
- 18:14Speaker 3: just looked the I mean he had that anchorman you know,
- 18:17Speaker 3: which somebody talked about Ron Burgundy, you know, in that
- 18:20Speaker 3: whole movie. But I mean, he just that's if you
- 18:23Speaker 3: looked up, you know, anchor person of the nineteen seventies, eighties,
- 18:27Speaker 3: and that was Tom. Tom McGee had the look. I
- 18:29Speaker 3: want to ask you about this. I wanted to get
- 18:32Speaker 3: into this. TJ. Meadows is putting on Axent on social media.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Multiple sources say there will not be a push this
- 18:39Speaker 3: Saturday to reopen the West Virginia Republican primaries boils down,
- 18:43Speaker 3: according to TJ to parliamentary and procedural issues. Your thoughts
- 18:47Speaker 3: on that not called BS calling BS on UTJ if
- 18:51Speaker 3: you're listening.
- 18:51Speaker 10: I talked to some folks within the Republican Party probably
- 18:54Speaker 10: a week ago, and their feeling is that they just
- 18:58Speaker 10: want Republicans voting on Republicans in the primary, get back
- 19:02Speaker 10: the way it used to be, kind of the way
- 19:04Speaker 10: the Democrats were when they were the majority party. There
- 19:06Speaker 10: are some that believe that there are too many moderates
- 19:09Speaker 10: in the Republican Party and they want it to become
- 19:12Speaker 10: more conservative.
- 19:13Speaker 12: And so go.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Ahead and call it what the people in the party
- 19:16Speaker 3: call it. They call them rhinos.
- 19:18Speaker 10: Them I call them Scott's shrinking Republicans. Those are the
- 19:21Speaker 10: old Republicans. And and so, I mean, each party has
- 19:25Speaker 10: the right to figure out their destiny and if you
- 19:27Speaker 10: get the majority of the votes, but I think there's
- 19:29Speaker 10: a move and a belief that the Republican Party in
- 19:31Speaker 10: West Virginia is not conservative enough and they want to
- 19:34Speaker 10: make it more conservative. Okay, I mean you asked me
- 19:38Speaker 10: what my impression was. I'm not going to OpenD. I
- 19:41Speaker 10: think there's a risk though when you do that, because
- 19:44Speaker 10: there are conservatives in West Virginia in terms of economic conservatives,
- 19:47Speaker 10: they're not social conservatives. And if you do take it
- 19:50Speaker 10: too far to the right, then then does it come
- 19:54Speaker 10: to a time when more moderate Democrats can get elected?
- 19:58Speaker 10: And I think they that is a situation. I think
- 20:01Speaker 10: a two party system in this state would be great.
- 20:04Speaker 10: I look, you know, we have some business interests in Ohio,
- 20:08Speaker 10: and I see where they have competition. The Republicans, you know,
- 20:11Speaker 10: dominate a lot of it, but there's competition, and I
- 20:14Speaker 10: think at the end of the day, the product for
- 20:17Speaker 10: the voters is much better if you have a little
- 20:20Speaker 10: competition for ideas well.
- 20:23Speaker 3: And I was talking to somebody the other day, good
- 20:24Speaker 3: friend of mine, who is a politico if you will,
- 20:27Speaker 3: in southern West Virginia, and he is he's a registered
- 20:31Speaker 3: Republican and he is one but former Democrat, as almost
- 20:35Speaker 3: everyone in southern West Virginia is these days. You know,
- 20:37Speaker 3: former Democrats. And look, I've told my story before. I
- 20:40Speaker 3: registered to vote when I was in high school and
- 20:43Speaker 3: I registered as a Democrat because in Logan County, if
- 20:45Speaker 3: you weren't a Democrat, you had no one to vote for,
- 20:47Speaker 3: especially at that time, and everybody was a I mean
- 20:51Speaker 3: everybody was a Democrat. There were no Republicans. But getting
- 20:54Speaker 3: back to my friend, I mean, he said he considers
- 20:57Speaker 3: it to be political suicide for the Republican Party in
- 20:59Speaker 3: this southern part of West Virginia and that they're going
- 21:01Speaker 3: to lose a whole lot of votes in the south. Now,
- 21:03Speaker 3: it could be argued maybe there aren't a lot of
- 21:05Speaker 3: votes in southern West Virginia one way or the other.
- 21:07Speaker 10: Your thoughts, well, I think where they run the risk
- 21:10Speaker 10: is more in the eastern Panhandle because as you see
- 21:12Speaker 10: more and more folks from Washington, d C. And northern
- 21:16Speaker 10: Virginia move into the Panhandle and they're making that move
- 21:19Speaker 10: and in the northern part of Virginia is a moderate
- 21:23Speaker 10: to liberal area. I think that's more of an issue
- 21:26Speaker 10: there if you go so far to the right than
- 21:29Speaker 10: do you alienate it. But that's a balance that that
- 21:32Speaker 10: party is going to have to make. And I think
- 21:34Speaker 10: that we need a little bit of we need a
- 21:37Speaker 10: little bit of competition for ideas well.
- 21:39Speaker 3: And I liked your point at the beginning of the segment.
- 21:41Speaker 3: And again we're talking with Tom Sussman. It's their party.
- 21:44Speaker 3: They can make the rules. Yeah, I mean absolutely have
- 21:46Speaker 3: one hunder percent.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I don't fall them.
- 21:47Speaker 10: I mean the Democrats. If you'd ask the Democrats in
- 21:51Speaker 10: nineteen seventies to an independent vote in the Democratic primary,
- 21:54Speaker 10: they would have laughed in the faith.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Well. And but how many independents were there though in
- 21:58Speaker 3: the nineteen seventies.
- 21:59Speaker 10: But they didn't want to take a chance to open
- 22:01Speaker 10: it up. And when Republicans started talking about open primaries
- 22:04Speaker 10: before they took control of the legislature, it kind of
- 22:06Speaker 10: goes so, you know that the Republicans wanted to have
- 22:10Speaker 10: judicial elections be nonpartisan. Now that they're in the majority,
- 22:14Speaker 10: of you hear Republicans say, oh, now we need to
- 22:15Speaker 10: make a partisan you know. So it's it's kind of
- 22:18Speaker 10: whose goat's getting gord?
- 22:19Speaker 3: I guess write that downstep, But whose goats getting gord?

- 22:37Speaker 3: says a move to attempt to reopen the primary will
- 22:40Speaker 3: fail spectacularly at the GOP meeting on Saturday. The votes
- 22:43Speaker 3: simply aren't there.
- 22:44Speaker 10: That's yeah, and so what do we do. We just
- 22:46Speaker 10: blame it on parliamentary procedure.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Yeah, oh, so you think that's what they're They're just
- 22:50Speaker 3: gonna blame it on there.
- 22:51Speaker 10: You go say, wow, it's parliamentary procedure. That's the public
- 22:53Speaker 10: percent of it. I guarantee you if Governor Morrissey and
- 22:57Speaker 10: the leadership and the Republican Party wanted it open on
- 23:00Speaker 10: a way to suspend the rules, just like they did
- 23:01Speaker 10: at the legislature.
- 23:02Speaker 3: There are three that we know of, three folks that
- 23:06Speaker 3: are going to be casting their hat in the in
- 23:09Speaker 3: the ring for the Republican leadership. When I interviewed all
- 23:12Speaker 3: three of them on Metro News Midday at one point
- 23:15Speaker 3: last week so on, and I don't know why. For
- 23:17Speaker 3: some reason, TJ. Meadows was walking in the studio here.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Did you know he called BS on what you said?
- 23:24Speaker 3: I'm going to start a fight, Like now, I'm not
- 23:26Speaker 3: turning your microphone on. I'm not turning your microphone on.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I'm kidding. Mister Meadows is here, but he's just doing this.
- 23:32Speaker 3: This is where he get gets his hair and makeup done.
- 23:35Speaker 10: That's when you turn to camp. They don't turn to cameras.
- 23:37Speaker 4: I knew.
- 23:37Speaker 10: Is there's something wrong?
- 23:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, yes, yes, yes, all right, But I interviewed
- 23:44Speaker 3: the three folks that are vying for the chairmanship last week.
- 23:49Speaker 3: I interviewed him on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Immediately on
- 23:54Speaker 3: the Saturday that Matt Harridge announced because he's a member
- 23:57Speaker 3: of the Morrisey administration, he announced that he was not
- 24:00Speaker 3: he was stepping down. I mean that announcement hit at
- 24:04Speaker 3: noon on a Saturday afternoon, and within like ten to
- 24:07Speaker 3: fifteen minutes, Senator Justice had a statement out endorsing Delegate
- 24:11Speaker 3: Josh Holstein out of Boone County.
- 24:13Speaker 10: Yeah, that was kind of interesting. I did talk to
- 24:15Speaker 10: a car party chair the other day in County chair
- 24:19Speaker 10: and they said they want to move away from elected
- 24:21Speaker 10: officials as being party chair. So I don't know where
- 24:25Speaker 10: that goes, and I guess a lot of it's going
- 24:27Speaker 10: to be what does the governor want and what does
- 24:30Speaker 10: Senator Justice want and Senator Capito and do they control
- 24:34Speaker 10: those votes?
- 24:35Speaker 3: And here's what I think, And it's a good point
- 24:36Speaker 3: that you bring up, Tom, because I think sometimes people
- 24:40Speaker 3: forget what an influence that the people on top have
- 24:44Speaker 3: on the state parties, whether it's Republican or Democrat. And
- 24:48Speaker 3: trust me, a lot of those folks that are going
- 24:50Speaker 3: to be casting ballots in Morgantown this weekend decided and
- 24:52Speaker 3: whether it's for a chair or anything else they're deciding on.
- 24:55Speaker 3: They got Shelley Moore, Capito, they got Jim Justice, they
- 24:58Speaker 3: got Riley Moore, and they got Carol Miller in the
- 25:00Speaker 3: back of their mind.
- 25:01Speaker 10: Well, and they have the governorment the governor too. Yeah,
- 25:05Speaker 10: you don't want to be a sitting governor and find
- 25:07Speaker 10: yourself adverse with the state party chair. So how do
- 25:12Speaker 10: you avoid that? You make sure your person gets to
- 25:15Speaker 10: be the chair. Well, you know, Jim Justice is talking
- 25:17Speaker 10: about coming back and running for governor. I keep hearing that.
- 25:19Speaker 10: I keep hearing that rumor, And so maybe he wants
- 25:22Speaker 10: his own chair so that then he can control that.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Is that a legitimate thing though, that we hear that
- 25:27Speaker 3: Governor Justice is going to come back and run forget.
- 25:29Speaker 10: We heard that with Joe Manchin. You know, when you're
- 25:31Speaker 10: a governor, you're one of one. When you go to
- 25:33Speaker 10: d C, you're one of one hundred. It's kind of
- 25:35Speaker 10: frustrating your low man on the totem pole.
- 25:38Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 25:39Speaker 10: Uh, there's definitely, you know, not a great lot of
- 25:42Speaker 10: love between the current governor and Senator Justice.
- 25:45Speaker 3: So, I mean that's pretty evident. I mean, when I've
- 25:47Speaker 3: been able to do what I've been able to, I
- 25:49Speaker 3: had heard some some scuttle, if you will, mister Sussman,
- 25:53Speaker 3: that first lady Denise Morrissey might at one time have
- 25:56Speaker 3: been interested in running for Republican Party chair. Now I
- 25:59Speaker 3: don't know, I get that from some pretty reliable sources.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Understanding that's not a thing. Now, did you hear those
- 26:04Speaker 3: some things?
- 26:05Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
- 26:05Speaker 10: But yet in those situations you hear a lot.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Yeah, well, a lot of a lot of things are
- 26:11Speaker 3: put out there by the people that are interested, you know,
- 26:13Speaker 3: straw man, you know kind of stuff. So, going back
- 26:16Speaker 3: to the Jim Justice situation, I said, with all due
- 26:20Speaker 3: respect to Senator Justice from the very from the very beginning,
- 26:24Speaker 3: that it didn't seem to me like he was a
- 26:26Speaker 3: good fit in DC. And what I mean by that,
- 26:28Speaker 3: I'm not saying he couldn't do the job or anything
- 26:30Speaker 3: like that. I'm just saying Jim Justice is literally and
- 26:33Speaker 3: figuratively a larger than life character, you know, and he
- 26:36Speaker 3: likes to be the star and there's Look, there's nothing
- 26:40Speaker 3: wrong with that. A lot of a lot of Republicans
- 26:43Speaker 3: and Democrats that did great things had that same ego.
- 26:46Speaker 3: That's fine. And when you go to d C, I mean,
- 26:50Speaker 3: you know he's just another he's just another guy.
- 26:52Speaker 10: Well, but Governor Justice, I say, is really good on
- 26:55Speaker 10: the inner personal discussion, the one on one discussion, meeting
- 26:59Speaker 10: and working with people. I mean, he had people support
- 27:03Speaker 10: him and his elections here that you would go, really,
- 27:06Speaker 10: they're supporting a Republican for governor some of the education
- 27:09Speaker 10: groups and whatnot. So I think that it's a little
- 27:12Speaker 10: too early. I would suggest to you that with his
- 27:15Speaker 10: with his demeanor and the way he works with people
- 27:18Speaker 10: and gets to know people, let's give him a year
- 27:21Speaker 10: and see where he comes out. As with any of
- 27:23Speaker 10: those senators, because a lot of times people get elected
- 27:25Speaker 10: to a congressional or a legislative branch, and you go,
- 27:28Speaker 10: I don't see how they're going to survive. And the
- 27:30Speaker 10: next thing you know, they're pulling the strings.
- 27:32Speaker 3: What do you make Tom of this battle between the
- 27:37Speaker 3: Morris administration and the State school Board? We go to court,
- 27:41Speaker 3: I mean we know that well.
- 27:42Speaker 10: I think the State school Board looks at the legislation
- 27:45Speaker 10: that's there and they say, this is the rules. We
- 27:48Speaker 10: got to follow the rules. Executive orders are nice, but
- 27:52Speaker 10: they're not the law, and so I think you have
- 27:55Speaker 10: to follow the law. I think what the Secretary of
- 27:57Speaker 10: State did, which I thought was smart by not accepting
- 28:00Speaker 10: those rules, will then facilitate a quick hearing on does
- 28:07Speaker 10: the legislature then have the power to to to rule
- 28:11Speaker 10: on on the rules? In terms of the vaccines, I
- 28:14Speaker 10: think it's pretty clear. I think that that law that's
- 28:18Speaker 10: out there right now that requires mandatory school aid vaccines stands.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Why do you think Morsey Governor Morsey Tom is so
- 28:26Speaker 3: adamant about this?
- 28:27Speaker 4: Is it?
- 28:28Speaker 3: Is it about the vaccines or is it about the
- 28:31Speaker 3: principles behind it? I mean, it could be any other topic.
- 28:34Speaker 3: It's just that he wants to be the one in charge.
- 28:36Speaker 10: I don't know, there's his base for the large part
- 28:41Speaker 10: is anti vaccine, and I think that he's carrying that message,
- 28:46Speaker 10: although my personal feeling is it's a it's an anti
- 28:49Speaker 10: health message. It's not make America healthy again, it's make
- 28:53Speaker 10: West Virginia sicker again if you do away with school
- 28:56Speaker 10: age vaccines, which I'm sure that'll get your texting going
- 29:00Speaker 10: from Mike Stewart.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Pick it on the guy.
- 29:04Speaker 10: He's not even here, man, Well, I guarantee you maybe
- 29:06Speaker 10: he's listening. Yeah, possible, but but no, I mean so,
- 29:10Speaker 10: I think that's where that is the whole question. You know,
- 29:13Speaker 10: the legislature and the governor have a real hard time
- 29:15Speaker 10: with the fact that the constitution sets forth that the
- 29:19Speaker 10: state school board is a separate constitutional arm of government
- 29:23Speaker 10: in West Virginia to protect education. Yeah, in the old
- 29:26Speaker 10: day's education was very political, and I think people wanted
- 29:29Speaker 10: to take it away from the politics. And the voters
- 29:33Speaker 10: have spoken twice on that, so I think that, but
- 29:37Speaker 10: they still they want to have control.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Tom Susman, It's always a pleasure to have you on
- 29:41Speaker 3: a showdown. I also wanted to ask you because I
- 29:44Speaker 3: know you're very involved in things, believe it or not,
- 29:47Speaker 3: outside politics, and we had you scheduled to be on
- 29:52Speaker 3: the midday show yesterday, but we had some breaking news
- 29:53Speaker 3: out of Clarksburg with a water main breake, and so

- 34:43Speaker 3: politics anymore, so I don't know Texan why the Republicans
- 34:47Speaker 3: who have historically professed their loyalty and adherence to the
- 34:50Speaker 3: constitution always challenge and try to go against its rules
- 34:54Speaker 3: and laws. So I'm not really quite sure what that
- 34:56Speaker 3: is referring to, but okay, U Matt Sutton is here,
- 35:01Speaker 3: chief of staff for mayor. A good one. How are
- 35:02Speaker 3: you doing, buddy?
- 35:03Speaker 11: Doing good pal.
- 35:04Speaker 14: It's it's been a crazy a couple of weeks. Last
- 35:06Speaker 14: week was Charleston Public Courts tennis tournament. So it's always
- 35:10Speaker 14: a good community event and a great reminder to me
- 35:12Speaker 14: that I'm not thirty years old anymore. So they say, yeah,
- 35:16Speaker 14: I get off the court at eleven o'clock at night
- 35:17Speaker 14: and they're like, okay, you won. You get to play
- 35:19Speaker 14: the next match at eight o'clock in the morning. And
- 35:20Speaker 14: I'm like, yeah, sure, and my body's like, nah, man,
- 35:22Speaker 14: that's not gonna work.
- 35:23Speaker 3: It's like you're like eight o'clock in the morning, like
- 35:25Speaker 3: this year, eight o'clock in the morning.
- 35:27Speaker 7: Like.
- 35:28Speaker 14: So now it's always it's always a fun event at
- 35:30Speaker 14: West Virginia State runs it. My good friends Andrea cutting
- 35:33Speaker 14: Him and Sydney Prince put on a great tournament. So
- 35:34Speaker 14: you know that it's a couple hundred people, a lot
- 35:37Speaker 14: of hip folks from actually come down from Kentucky, and
- 35:39Speaker 14: come over from Ohio. We had a couple and it's
- 35:42Speaker 14: getting younger, which is great too. So it's a good
- 35:44Speaker 14: community event that paired with TBT. We got Multifest coming up.
- 35:47Speaker 14: It's just you know, summer in Charleston doesn't stop now.
- 35:49Speaker 3: So let's let's talk about TVT We got the championship
- 35:52Speaker 3: in the West Virginia Regional tonight. It'll be Best Virginia
- 35:56Speaker 3: in that event and they're playing for the championship night
- 35:59Speaker 3: seven o'clock to see him Convention Center.
- 36:01Speaker 11: Yeah, it's exciting.
- 36:01Speaker 14: I mean I think you know when we when we
- 36:03Speaker 14: get the TBT in town and we get the drawers,
- 36:06Speaker 14: and we always look for that, you know, WVU Marshall game. Right,
- 36:09Speaker 14: that's what we that's what we aim for and hope
- 36:11Speaker 14: that we can get because that's when we have our
- 36:14Speaker 14: biggest crowd. I mean, you know, no matter what team
- 36:16Speaker 14: you cheer for, or even if you're just a basketball fan,
- 36:18Speaker 14: it's really enjoyable to watch. So not only do we
- 36:20Speaker 14: get that, but then we also get one of them
- 36:22Speaker 14: in the finals. It works out just absolutely perfect. So
- 36:25Speaker 14: best of luck to Best Virginia tonight. I will say
- 36:27Speaker 14: that there was a thing on Facebook John Flowers or Twitter,
- 36:31Speaker 14: I guess posted something about the mayor cheering for heard
- 36:35Speaker 14: that she was wearing a different colored shirt. He said
- 36:37Speaker 14: she was wearing green, but she wasn't. She was wearing AWWA.
- 36:40Speaker 14: She was cheering for both teams.
- 36:41Speaker 3: But wanted she got a kid at Marshall and a
- 36:45Speaker 3: kid at WV.
- 36:46Speaker 14: Yeah, I think that that John decided that be a
- 36:48Speaker 14: good way for him to get some likes, so he
- 36:49Speaker 14: decided to point out the mayor. But she's got a
- 36:51Speaker 14: kid in both schools and has always read it for
- 36:53Speaker 14: both schools, so it's always weird. She was there as
- 36:55Speaker 14: a neutral party cheering on the event. But it's always
- 36:58Speaker 14: it's all in good fun. And we know what John
- 37:00Speaker 14: all on good fun. He came out to regatta and
- 37:02Speaker 14: him and Kevin Jones and John Elmore got to come
- 37:03Speaker 14: out and get the crowd ready during the regatta for TBT,
- 37:07Speaker 14: So it's always always.
- 37:08Speaker 11: Fun that way, and it's just a it really is
- 37:10Speaker 11: a fun event.
- 37:12Speaker 14: And to be able to announce the WVU Wick Forest
- 37:14Speaker 14: Game coming in December right before TVT kicked off was
- 37:16Speaker 14: actually another huge, a huge announcement for the cv B
- 37:19Speaker 14: in the coliseum, So h It really is having those
- 37:22Speaker 14: relationships with those schools. You know, we have the game
- 37:24Speaker 14: over at Gomar Park, which is always awesome, and of
- 37:27Speaker 14: course we haven't had a WVU Marshall basketball game in
- 37:29Speaker 14: a long time, but I know that you know we're
- 37:30Speaker 14: ready to host when they're ready to play.
- 37:32Speaker 3: So it's are you listening?
- 37:34Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 37:34Speaker 3: Are you listening? Well, I'm gonna leave, Yeah, I'm gonna
- 37:37Speaker 3: leave my thoughts on that alone. You can, honestly though,
- 37:41Speaker 3: you can support both schools. People have a tendency to
- 37:43Speaker 3: forget that. I mean, I'm a Marshall should but I mean,
- 37:47Speaker 3: other than when they play WVU, I'm all about WVU.
- 37:50Speaker 3: You can actually do both. But Dave Allen Schilling five
- 37:52Speaker 3: Any Live is brought to you part by Morgan Morgan.
- 37:54Speaker 3: If you're injured, hired Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury
- 37:57Speaker 3: law firm. All right, so TBT snide, but I get
- 37:59Speaker 3: some other stuff I want to talk to you about.
- 38:01Speaker 3: There was a story in the papers when we lead
- 38:03Speaker 3: story as matter of fact in the local gazette mail
- 38:07Speaker 3: about water leaks and mold hitting the YWCA, And of
- 38:11Speaker 3: course we're talking about the exact name is the Sojourners
- 38:13Speaker 3: shelter for homeless women and families. What's going on here, man.
- 38:17Speaker 14: Yeah, So the Sojourner Shelter that YWCA runs, first of all,
- 38:21Speaker 14: is the one of we have a lot of important programs,
- 38:24Speaker 14: but this is one of the most important programs we
- 38:25Speaker 14: have in our city. It helps domestic exposed women in
- 38:29Speaker 14: domestic abuse situations and as our women's homeless shelter, So
- 38:33Speaker 14: it is an extremely important program in our city. And
- 38:37Speaker 14: it is inside a city building, So the city owns
- 38:39Speaker 14: the building that Sojourners is in. And you know, just
- 38:42Speaker 14: like every other building, it gets old. We've you know,
- 38:44Speaker 14: we've got a roof we've got to repair. There was
- 38:46Speaker 14: some long standing issues in a shower that we weren't
- 38:48Speaker 14: made aware of that ended up. You know, we all
- 38:50Speaker 14: have that issue with a shower or plumbing. If you
- 38:52Speaker 14: don't take care of it when it first starts, it's
- 38:53Speaker 14: going to become something a whole lot bigger.
- 38:55Speaker 11: So it became a bigger issue.
- 38:57Speaker 14: But working with contract is to get those problems fixed
- 39:01Speaker 14: and working with the YWCA, I will say, you know,
- 39:03Speaker 14: the YWCA is in our new leadership, and there was
- 39:05Speaker 14: a little bit of a gap between you know, you
- 39:08Speaker 14: know Dev Weinstein ran the wife for years and you
- 39:10Speaker 14: know between that and the new leader and Sonia, you know,
- 39:14Speaker 14: there was some not communication going on and things that
- 39:16Speaker 14: that kind of went under which which happens, right, I mean,
- 39:18Speaker 14: it happens, and some things that go and we all
- 39:21Speaker 14: know that any issue that deals with water, as we're
- 39:23Speaker 14: all dealing with this summer is springing this summer. Any
- 39:25Speaker 14: issue deals with water, if it's not addressed immediately, will
- 39:27Speaker 14: become a problem that you've got to deal with. So
- 39:29Speaker 14: we're working with them really closely to deal with that
- 39:31Speaker 14: problem right now, you know, I don't you know, we
- 39:35Speaker 14: have a lot of great contractors, and shout out to
- 39:36Speaker 14: all of them who are willing to come out and
- 39:38Speaker 14: help us on the fly.
- 39:39Speaker 11: But fixing the shower problems and then we've got.
- 39:41Speaker 14: The roof, which I believe the bids do today, and
- 39:43Speaker 14: then if we get good bidders, well we'll get in
- 39:45Speaker 14: front of city council. But working with them really hard
- 39:47Speaker 14: to make sure that that that place gets, you know,
- 39:49Speaker 14: the upgrades that it needs, and then that they get
- 39:52Speaker 14: their general maintenance plan put together because really with anything else,
- 39:55Speaker 14: you know, just just a little bit of oversight and
- 39:57Speaker 14: you can avoid major problems, because we do want folks
- 40:00Speaker 14: in there not only to be comfortable, to be safe
- 40:03Speaker 14: and to you know, in one of the worst times
- 40:05Speaker 14: their lives, to have a place that they can rely
- 40:07Speaker 14: on and be in and and the why does an
- 40:08Speaker 14: amazing job run the program. And it's got a few
- 40:10Speaker 14: issues we got to fix in the building and make
- 40:12Speaker 14: sure that we can keep people safe and comfortable while
- 40:14Speaker 14: they're helping to get back on their feet.
- 40:16Speaker 3: And they do a fantastic job there, all amazing as
- 40:19Speaker 3: you said, at that time, when people are in there,
- 40:22Speaker 3: they ain't exactly at their as you said, their best
- 40:24Speaker 3: point in their life.
- 40:25Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean, I think it's it is something that
- 40:26Speaker 14: our care team relies upon, it's something that the Trust
- 40:29Speaker 14: and Police department allies upon.
- 40:31Speaker 11: They are a first phone call in a lot of situations.
- 40:33Speaker 14: And their staff have an amazing staff of social workers
- 40:36Speaker 14: and professionals who help who help women in need, and
- 40:40Speaker 14: you know, it is one of those things that is
- 40:42Speaker 14: a critical program in our city. And you know, just
- 40:44Speaker 14: working with them to clean up some long standing problems
- 40:46Speaker 14: and make sure we can get back everybody back to
- 40:49Speaker 14: where they need to be. And I think it's worked
- 40:50Speaker 14: out really well. We've got a good communication plan that's
- 40:53Speaker 14: been put in place, and we've got a good maintenance
- 40:55Speaker 14: plan for that building and for other buildings they have
- 40:58Speaker 14: that's been put in place. And feel good about moving forward,
- 41:01Speaker 14: just fixing some problems.

- 41:19Speaker 3: dominating the new cycle over the last you know, twelve
- 41:22Speaker 3: to twenty hours or so. That was the death of
- 41:24Speaker 3: Tom McGee, you know, longtime anchor person WC. It just television,
- 41:27Speaker 3: no relation and WWK later went on to become an attorney.
- 41:32Speaker 3: You being a Charleston guy, I mean you knew Toma Gee?
- 41:36Speaker 14: Well yeah, I mean you everybody all grew up watching Tom,
- 41:38Speaker 14: and I grew up watching Tom and then I was
- 41:40Speaker 14: lucky enough as when I got in my professional career
- 41:42Speaker 14: to get to work with him Motor announced. I think
- 41:45Speaker 14: it was winning What's going to c W Let's Seeah,
- 41:47Speaker 14: So I got to work with him when he was
- 41:49Speaker 14: doing that, and you know, just a genuinely nice guy.
- 41:52Speaker 14: And it's always it's always. You know, people meet you,
- 41:55Speaker 14: Dave and your personality on the radio, and you're in
- 41:57Speaker 14: a personality in person, you tend to be the same
- 41:59Speaker 14: person for people don't know you out there, and Tom
- 42:01Speaker 14: was the exact same way like some folks. Some folks
- 42:03Speaker 14: are one way on TV in another way in person.
- 42:05Speaker 14: Tom was just jovial, nice and always willing to crack
- 42:09Speaker 14: a joke. And you know, I think it was our
- 42:11Speaker 14: buddy Tony parents, you know that referred to him as
- 42:13Speaker 14: the original Ron Burgundy.
- 42:14Speaker 11: And I think that was kind of right. I mean,
- 42:15Speaker 11: that was that was Tom.
- 42:16Speaker 14: He was larger than life, and he was large and
- 42:18Speaker 14: as a kid, when you got to meet him or
- 42:20Speaker 14: see him, you really felt like you were meeting a celebrity.
- 42:22Speaker 11: Because you were because he was he was. He was
- 42:24Speaker 11: our guy.
- 42:25Speaker 14: And and uh, it was sad, sad of his passing,
- 42:29Speaker 14: but you know, especially time like this where now everybody
- 42:32Speaker 14: gets to relive all of those memories and all those stories.
- 42:34Speaker 14: It's it's it's fun to it's fun to hear everybody
- 42:36Speaker 14: talk about how great Tom was.
- 42:38Speaker 3: I had a texture. So the first memory I have
- 42:40Speaker 3: of Tom McGee who six out when he was dressed
- 42:42Speaker 3: as Santa and arrived at the Town Center. It came
- 42:44Speaker 3: down the escalator at Center Court that was pre Starbucks,
- 42:48Speaker 3: and he let us sing along of Alabama's Angels among
- 42:50Speaker 3: Us or pray God be with his family Rest in peace.
- 42:52Speaker 13: Tom.
- 42:53Speaker 11: Yeah, I could tell you know. We I grew up
- 42:54Speaker 11: in St.
- 42:55Speaker 14: Anthony's Church over on the West Side and huge fish
- 42:57Speaker 14: dinners every Friday night during Lent, and you know we
- 43:00Speaker 14: have politicians would come through, and people would come through
- 43:02Speaker 14: and everybody just kind of sit there and introduce them.
- 43:04Speaker 14: When Tom walked through the door, everybody stood up want
- 43:06Speaker 14: to meet him, like it was just one of those
- 43:07Speaker 14: guys where I can always remember that like you could
- 43:09Speaker 14: you could a State Center could walk in and people
- 43:12Speaker 14: would kind of go, oh, look who that is. When
- 43:13Speaker 14: Tom walked in, everybody stood up to go meet him
- 43:16Speaker 14: because he was just larger than life and he was
- 43:18Speaker 14: a great, a great West Virginia and great Charlestonian.
- 43:21Speaker 11: So he will definitely be missed. But it is fun
- 43:24Speaker 11: listening to people tell the stories.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Well, and I think too, We'll say this. I'll let
- 43:27Speaker 3: you go. I think too. You got to understand the
- 43:30Speaker 3: time frame. I mean, I grew up in a time
- 43:33Speaker 3: in the seventies and eighties. We you know, we didn't
- 43:36Speaker 3: get cable television until like I was in junior high.
- 43:40Speaker 3: You know, back it was called junior High. That should
- 43:42Speaker 3: tell you something, right there. So we had primarily three
- 43:44Speaker 3: eight thirteen, you know, a couple of other TVs, couple
- 43:47Speaker 3: of little channels here and there, and so the people
- 43:49Speaker 3: that you saw on TV, the Tom McGee's or the others,
- 43:52Speaker 3: that's that was that was the news because you didn't
- 43:55Speaker 3: have all of these different outlets everybody and people didn't
- 43:57Speaker 3: have X, they didn't have YouTube TV or whatever, and
- 44:00Speaker 3: you got your local channels and that's where you got
- 44:02Speaker 3: your news. And whether it was a Tom McGee or
- 44:04Speaker 3: Tony Cavalier. Bob Brunner is another one. Mister Brunner is
- 44:07Speaker 3: always going to be on the show tomorrow. I had
- 44:09Speaker 3: already scheduled to have Bob Brunner come on the show tomorrow.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Just that was the news and when you met those people.
- 44:14Speaker 3: I mean it was like you said, it's like meeting
- 44:16Speaker 3: somebody larger than life. And Tom McGee was one of
- 44:18Speaker 3: those people.
- 44:19Speaker 14: Yeah, and he just carried himself that way too. And
- 44:20Speaker 14: I mean I think it was to your point. You know,
- 44:21Speaker 14: we didn't have CNN anchors or Fox News anchors. We
- 44:23Speaker 14: didn't have those people in our lives. We had our
- 44:25Speaker 14: local news anchors and they were the most trusted source
- 44:27Speaker 14: we had. But Tom not only was a trusted source,
- 44:30Speaker 14: but he was also just a great person and somebody
- 44:32Speaker 14: who was pleasant, pleasant and fun to be around.
- 44:34Speaker 3: So Matt Sutton, I appreciate you being here, BAMSA, thanks

- 48:16Speaker 3: Tex says, while many people in the city complained about
- 48:18Speaker 3: the homeless and people in crisis, the services we provide
- 48:20Speaker 3: them are substandard, despite the best efforts of the carrying

- 48:42Speaker 11: Agreed.
- 48:43Speaker 3: There's been a lot of the news really over the
- 48:44Speaker 3: last couple of years about the Dunbar Police Department. Aaron
- 48:48Speaker 3: Parker has got a story post at wv metronews dot com.
- 48:51Speaker 3: Police chief in Dunbar, John Garton says the officer that
- 48:54Speaker 3: had been named in multiple lawsuits has handed in his resignation.
- 48:58Speaker 3: Officer Zachary Winners served with the department for five years,
- 49:01Speaker 3: and in that time he was named in two lawsuits,
- 49:05Speaker 3: one of which ended with the death of a suspect
- 49:08Speaker 3: and combined with two lawsuits, cost the city around two
- 49:11Speaker 3: and a half million dollars, according to aaronstorywv Metronews dot com. Now,
- 49:16Speaker 3: there's been a video circulating around social media of a
- 49:20Speaker 3: police cruiser crashing in Raleigh County and reportedly Officer Winners
- 49:25Speaker 3: was at the wheel. Anyway, Officer Winners has resided and
- 49:30Speaker 3: this police situation over all in Dunbar, at least in
- 49:33Speaker 3: the service, has been a mess. Hopefully they'll be able
- 49:35Speaker 3: to get that straightened out for the people of Dunbar.
- 49:37Speaker 3: Coming up later today Metro News Midday powered by Selango Law.
- 49:41Speaker 3: On the show today, we're going to continue to talk
- 49:42Speaker 3: about menus in the schools this fall and how the
- 49:44Speaker 3: school systems are adapting to the changes and acted by
- 49:47Speaker 3: the legislature. We'll get into that story. We'll continue to
- 49:50Speaker 3: talk about the passing of Tom McGee. Mark Martin, legendary
- 49:53Speaker 3: sports broadcaster who worked alongside Tom, was going to join us.
- 49:56Speaker 3: It's Metro News Midday with thirteen News in Tonight, Life
- 49:58Speaker 3: Anchor Amanda Baron and Me coming up in today, brought
- 50:00Speaker 3: to you by a Selango Law. As I mentioned earlier
- 50:03Speaker 3: speaking of legendary broadcasters, he always fascinating. Bob Brunner is
- 50:06Speaker 3: going to join me on the show tomorrow as his delegate,
- 50:09Speaker 3: Dan of Ferrell. That is coming up on tomorrow's show.
- 50:15Speaker 3: What is the update on the Epstein files, Well, there
- 50:17Speaker 3: is no update. That's the update. Sorry, there is no update.
- 50:22Speaker 3: One other thing about Tom mcgainn. I'll bring TJ. Meadows
- 50:25Speaker 3: in here. I did not know Tom McGee personally. Our
- 50:29Speaker 3: paths never crossed, although I certainly was aware of his
- 50:32Speaker 3: work at WCCHS Television no relation and WWK. Of course,
- 50:37Speaker 3: he later went on to become an attorney and he
- 50:40Speaker 3: died at the age of seventy eight in hospice care.
- 50:42Speaker 3: He was He was quite the character from what I've
- 50:46Speaker 3: been told, and his demons, of course were well known.
- 50:50Speaker 3: But he just looked the part, as we said earlier,
- 50:53Speaker 3: of a polished, big city anchor person. And he just
- 50:57Speaker 3: looked as I said earlier, I think if you looked up,
- 51:00Speaker 3: you know television anchor person, especially at that time, you're
- 51:03Speaker 3: gonna see Tom McGee's picture. Absolutely, he came here from
- 51:07Speaker 3: CNN and he'd worked at various places in Birmingham. I
- 51:10Speaker 3: think it was one of the places he worked. So
- 51:12Speaker 3: it's certainly a loss for the broadcasting community here in
- 51:15Speaker 3: West Virginia.
- 51:15Speaker 5: TJ.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Meadows is here and you and I were talking. Some
- 51:19Speaker 3: of our conversation were on there. Someone was off the
- 51:21Speaker 3: air with Matt Sutton about growing up and seeing Tom
- 51:24Speaker 3: McGee on television. I mean, that was just that was
- 51:27Speaker 3: like the standard man. He and Bob Brunner is going
- 51:30Speaker 3: to be on the show tomorrow. I'm more of a
- 51:31Speaker 3: Brunner guy because it's more of my generation. I'm a
- 51:34Speaker 3: little bit older than you are. But that's that was
- 51:38Speaker 3: the news to us as a child of the eighties.
- 51:41Speaker 3: Six o'clock it was Tom McGee, Mary Seu Jackson are
- 51:44Speaker 3: very own Dave weekly on sports. I mean, that was
- 51:47Speaker 3: the staple in the Greater Kanawa Valley southern West Virginia
- 51:50Speaker 3: for the most part, that's who you watched. And he
- 51:54Speaker 3: was a household name. Everyone knew Tom. And it was
- 51:56Speaker 3: an era where we didn't have all of these other outlooks.
- 52:00Speaker 3: We didn't have social media, the Internet was not there yet,
- 52:03Speaker 3: and that was a fixation for local television. Everybody knew
- 52:08Speaker 3: the guy. And you see, you see Tom mcghe it's
- 52:11Speaker 3: Tom McGee, you know, you know what I mean, it's
- 52:13Speaker 3: a big deal. He was and I don't mean this
- 52:15Speaker 3: pejority of it. He was our Ron Burgundy. I don't
- 52:18Speaker 3: want to throw another name out there too, and that's
- 52:19Speaker 3: Bob Smith. Bob Smith of course was WWK and then
- 52:23Speaker 3: later at wsa Z. Bob Smith. You see him from
- 52:25Speaker 3: time to time as a spokesperson for Victory, Toyota and Bob.
- 52:30Speaker 3: Quick story about Bob. Bob's broadcast career started at the
- 52:34Speaker 3: radio station where I spent twenty years doing mornings WVW
- 52:38Speaker 3: and logan. Interesting. He came down from Cincinnati. I know
- 52:40Speaker 3: Jimmy Buffett song he came down from but he did.
- 52:43Speaker 3: He was out of Cincinnati and he went to work
- 52:45Speaker 3: at at WVW and worked there for a few years.
- 52:49Speaker 3: That's where he got That was his first, his first broadcasting.
- 52:52Speaker 3: He's the first gig. Learn something every something else that
- 52:54Speaker 3: you may not know. Now that's a trivia thing. I'll
- 52:56Speaker 3: save it for later. Okay, go ahead to the show.
- 52:59Speaker 3: What's on show today?
- 53:00Speaker 6: Buddy Mike mckinna, our buddy from the Washington Times joins
- 53:03Speaker 6: us at ten oh six. He's got a new commentary out.
- 53:05Speaker 6: We'll discuss that. Danny Jones joins us to remember Tom McGee.
- 53:09Speaker 6: Jared Halpern on All Things Trump at eleven o six
- 53:11Speaker 6: from DC. Interesting story. Bill Steinbeck of Wellsburg will join
- 53:16Speaker 6: He'll join us. The police chief from Welsburg.
- 53:18Speaker 3: All right, gotta go see you tomorrow too, Then have fun.
- 53:20Speaker 3: I love somebody.
- 53:33Speaker 2: One four point five Cross Lanes, WVRC Media Station.
- 53:39Speaker 11: We're proud to live here too,
