- 0:07The Denver Broncos faced the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Stadium for the AFC Championship game on Sunday, January 11, 1987.
- 0:16Denver was coached by Dan Reeves and won the AFC West in 1986 under fourth-year quarterback John Elway.
- 0:23Cleveland was led by third-year coach Marty Schottenheimer.
- 0:27They were coming off a thrilling double-overtime win over the Jets in the divisional round of the playoffs a week earlier.
- 0:33This audio recording is from the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcers Mel Proctor and Dave Rowe.
- 0:48Hello everybody, Mel Proctor along with Dave Rowe speaking to you from Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio on a cold, windy afternoon.
- 0:54Temperatures in the 30s, the wind blowing out of the northwest at 17 miles per hour.
- 0:59And with a wind chill factor it feels like it's 6 degrees as the Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns swell off for the AFC Championship.
- 1:05The winner of today's game will meet the winner of the Giants Redskins game on January the 25th in the Super Bowl in Pasadena, California.
- 1:12Today's game is brought to you by Bud Light, the light beer with a first name and taste. Everything else is just a light.
- 1:18By State Farm, like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. By Ryder Truck Rental, by Mr. Goodrich, no one knows your GM car better than Mr. Goodrich.
- 1:27No one. By Everett Lighting Products, all kinds of flashlights for every kind of need.
- 1:32And by Vicks Throw Drops and new Vicks Vitamin C Drops.
- 1:36The Denver Broncos last played in the AFC title game in 1977 when they beat the Raiders to advance to the Super Bowl.
- 1:43For the Browns it will be their first appearance in an AFC Championship game.
- 1:46They last played in the title game in 1969 for the NFL Championship losing to the Minnesota Vikings.
- 1:52The Broncos won the AFC's Western Division with 11-5 mark. They beat New England in a playoff game last week 22-17 in Denver.
- 1:59And the AFC Central Division Browns finished their regular season with a 12-4 mark and one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history last week.
- 2:07They rallied from a 20-10 deficit with 4-14 left in regulation and beat the New York Jets in double overtime 23-20.
- 2:14Dave Rowe, we talked about the weather. It's cold, it's windy. How will that affect the two quarterbacks in these two teams?
- 2:19Well, both these quarterbacks have thrown in cold weather. Both these quarterbacks know what the conditions are like.
- 2:24They've experienced them all season long. But I'll tell you, this gives a lot of credibility to the fact that they should play playoff games in neutral sites in warm climates or have dome stadiums.
- 2:35Because weather is an important factor here today. The wind is whipping off that water. We've seen heavy snow, we've seen light snow, we've seen wind.
- 2:42And it's just all over the field. The wind affects wherever you are, it'll affect the passing game differently.
- 2:47The Browns are favored by roughly three points, flying before a sellout cloud of over 80,000.
- 2:52Many of them wearing dog faces and dog ears and barking and woofing. How much of a factor is the home field advantage?
- 2:58Well, if I was a visiting team and I was going to the, I guess you'd say that's the East End Zone, I would try to avoid that.
- 3:05That is amazing. That end zone, there must be 75 rows of people. They are unbelievable. They call it the dog area or whatever.
- 3:12The dog pound. The dog pound. It is an unbelievable sight. I have never in all my years of playing football seen the emotion that this crowd has.
- 3:19This is an unbelievable crowd. I just had a fantastic time just walking around listening to them.
- 3:24And we are ready to go from Cleveland as Rick Carlos tees it off to Browns, one that Tossin will receive back deep.
- 3:29For the Cleveland Browns, the dangerous Gerald McNeil, the ice cube, is the only man in the NFL this year to return a punt and a kickoff for touchdown.
- 3:36He's standing at the goal line. Carlos, the barefoot kicker. And imagine his toes are freezing in this weather.
- 3:43And here we go from Cleveland. Rick Carlos drives a high short end over end kick. It'll hit.
- 3:49Bouncing around the five yard line.
- 3:53And it's picked up and run out of bounds.
- 3:59By Herman Fondo of the Cleveland Browns.
- 4:02He thought the ball was going to go out of bounds. Waited for it. It never bounced out of bounds.
- 4:07And now that was a double-hick. He's knocked out of bounds himself at about the 19th.
- 4:12Now that's due to have the wind play the factor, Mel. The ball was actually kicked. It looked as if it was going to go out of bounds.
- 4:17It just kind of bobbled there. And he had to field it on the five yard line about a yard in from the sideline.
- 4:22The Cleveland Browns open with Kevin Mack and Ernest Beiner in the backfield. Beiner was just activated.
- 4:26He tore up an ankle in the seventh week of this season. They got two good running backs in there.
- 4:30Cozar, of course, is the quarterback for any Cozar.
- 4:33And the pitch on first down is to Mack on a sweep right. He's hit, breaks the tackle, and lunges forward to the 21 yard line.
- 4:39Brought down by Lewis Wright, the five-time Pro Bowler in his 12th year.
- 4:43On the offensive line for the Browns, Ricky Bolden is the left tackle. Cody Reisen, a Pro Bowler on the right side.
- 4:48The yards are Paul Ferentz. And Dan Fike is the right guard. Mike Babb is the center.
- 4:53The wide receivers are Reggie Langhorn and rookie Webster Slaughter. The tight end is the Wizard of Oz, Ozzy Newsom.
- 4:59Gain of one, second down and nine for the Browns, moving left to right from Cleveland Stadium.
- 5:04Webster Slaughter is wide to the left.
- 5:09And put out to the right side is Brian Brennan. He goes in motion.
- 5:12Cozar on the handoff to Kevin Mack running to his right. And he's knocked out of bounds at about the 22, a tough one-yard pickup.
- 5:19And again, it was Lewis Wright coming up from his left cornerback spot to make the tackle.
- 5:23It is so hard to get outside against this Denver Bronco defense. They play it a 34 defense.
- 5:28They play three down linemen, four linebackers. And their four linebackers are as good as any linebackers in the league.
- 5:33Very, very mobile. Not great physical specimen. Strong, but very, very quick.
- 5:38Herman Fontenot is in the backfield now for the Cleveland Browns. Langhorn is put out wide to the right.
- 5:44Brennan is wide to the left. Fontenot, a good receiver, is the lone setback.
- 5:48Third and eight for Bernie Cozar. He takes the snap, drops back to throw, getting some pressure.
- 5:53Now running to his right, throws on the run. It's almost picked off.
- 5:57Randy Robbins nearly had it and he would have been in for a touchdown if he'd caught it, but it's incomplete.
- 6:01And it was Robbins who picked off a pass and ran it in 62 yards for a touchdown the last time these teams met in 1984.
- 6:08And he really should have had that ball. He stepped right in front of the receiver. He was on the run.
- 6:12Cozar just started to step up in the pocket in the last minute, just winged the ball there.
- 6:15He never picked up the secondary reacting to it, and they were, they really dodged the bullet on that play.
- 6:20So Cleveland is unable to move on their first possession. Jeff Gossett is into punt. He has never had a punt blocked in his NFL career.
- 6:26Gerald Willehyde is standing back at the Denver 39 awaiting the kick. And it's a poor wobbly kick hitting it midfield.
- 6:33It takes a Cleveland bounce inside the Denver 45 and it will be down at the 42 yard line.
- 6:38The Broncos will have excellent field position.
- 6:42Major Everett, a special team star down there to down it, got a good roll on a 37 yard punt.
- 6:50So the Broncos begin this drive from the Denver 42.
- 6:54John Elway is the quarterback, the running back for Sandy Winder, Gerald Willehyde, the wide receiver is Vance Johnson,
- 6:59who caught a touchdown pass last week against New England, and Steve Watson.
- 7:03Orson Mobley is the tight end, although they have activated Clarence Kaye who spent the last four weeks in a drug rehabilitation program.
- 7:09Denver moving left or right. The Broncos wearing their orange jerseys, white pants, blue helmets, and 80,000 plus.
- 7:15Again to Howell, John Elway will throw on first down, guns it over the middle,
- 7:18instantly through the hands of his tight end, Orson Mobley, Eddie Johnson back in coverage.
- 7:24There were some questions of whether he would start. He's banged up with a bad knee and a bad ankle, but he is in the starting lineup.
- 7:29Yeah, he has a big job in front of him. He is outsized a lot by Orson Mobley.
- 7:33The tight end is 6'6". Eddie Johnson is going 6'1". There's a big, big match of difference there in height.
- 7:39He's got his hands full today trying to cover Orson Mobley.
- 7:42And then he's got his foot on right to the right. Vance Johnson swatted on the right side.
- 7:50Tight end Mobley is in motion left or right. Elway back to throw, getting some pressure,
- 7:54retreating a screen pass incomplete and there's a penalty marker down.
- 7:58He tried to hit Sammy Winder, but the screen never materialized and Elway was getting a lot of pressure.
- 8:03It looks like it's going to be defense and holding way downfield.
- 8:06What's happened 20 yards from the play? It was on the entire opposite side of the field.
- 8:13It's against Denver.
- 8:16By the way, the referee today is Chuck Heverling. The umpire is Gordon Wells.
- 8:21The headlinesman is Ed Merriam. The line judge is Bill Reynolds. The back judge is Ben Tompkins.
- 8:25Gary Lane is the side judge. The field judge is Johnny Greer. And Jim Tunnig is the alternate.
- 8:29And that was an interesting call. That was against Orson Mobley. He was on this side of the field.
- 8:33The near side of the field, the penalty was a screen play. The other side of the field, they called Mobley
- 8:37for downfield blocking while the pass was being thrown in every pass interference.
- 8:42Ben Plancy, a pass rushing specialist, checks in for Cleveland.
- 8:46It'll be second down and 10 now for the Broncos following the penalty from the 32-yard line.
- 8:51Offensive pass interference, number 80, number 89. A penalty will be declined. Third down.
- 9:00So they declined the penalty. It was against Orson Mobley.
- 9:04Third down. Third down and 10. No, second down.
- 9:09Well, they have moved the six. I thought we heard the referee say it was going to be third down.
- 9:13It would be third down about 20 yards. The down marker still indicates second down.
- 9:19Scoreboard read, third down. And it's beginning to snow again. The wind really whipping off Lake Erie.
- 9:25Strange sight here at Cleveland City. One of the strangest was a sailboat out on Lake Erie before the game.
- 9:30It said on the sail, it said, Go Brown. Oh, I couldn't believe coming over here, too.
- 9:34We passed the car and the guy was driving, had a football helmet on as he was driving down.
- 9:40I think, I don't know what they're doing. We're having a conference here with the officials.
- 9:44And now they're deciding, I think they're going to decide whether to take the penalty or not.
- 9:47They may change their mind on that.
- 9:51Offensive pass interference on number 89. The penalty will be accepted. It's second down.
- 9:58So they will accept the penalty on pass interference and it will be second down.
- 10:03Second down from the 32 yard line will be second and 20 now. John Elway will go for the shotgun.
- 10:08Steve Watson is in motion. And the crowd really getting loud.
- 10:13Elway retreating to throw, getting pressure from the right side, stepped up in the pocket, now going to run across to 30,
- 10:19take it out of bounds and he's chased off the 33 yard line by Chip Banks, the Pro Bowl linebacker.
- 10:24He's been a Pro Bowler for the last five seasons, making it again this year.
- 10:29And now coming into this game, one of the big questions was going to be the mobility of John Elway,
- 10:34whether that ankle that he sprained so severely last week would work for him, whether he would be hobbled.
- 10:39That time he showed he's got the mobility. He ran probably 25 yards.
- 10:43The Browns will go with six defensive backs. There's Mark Harper and Felix Reich, second of the game.
- 10:48Second down and 18 for Denver on a windy afternoon from Cleveland.
- 10:53John Elway who passed for 3485 yards during the regular season.
- 10:57Back to throw, dumps it over the middle, complete.
- 11:00To Gerald Wilhite, Wilhite running for the far sideline up and into the 49 yard line.
- 11:07Two of the Browns knocking him out of bounds, Ray Ellis and Chip Banks combining on the tackle.
- 11:12And now the wind and the snow are really beginning to pick up.
- 11:15They call Lake Squall where that wind comes off the lake and it picks up moisture.
- 11:19We're right on the edge. We can look out to see the water and the snow is pouring down here.
- 11:24Mike Horan, who averaged 49 yards to kick last week against New England, is in the putt into a driving wind and snow.
- 11:31Gerald McNeil, appropriately named, the ice cube standing back at the 10.
- 11:35He'll sit right in today. If the wind doesn't blow him away, he only weighs 147 pounds.
- 11:42It's blowing hard and the wind is really blowing right into the face of the putter Horan as he awaits the snap from Keith Bishop.
- 11:49No score from Cleveland. A wobbly snap, the left footer gets it away and it's a good kick, but the wind holds it up and it goes out of bounds at the 13 yard line.
- 11:58Great placement by Horan who's done a marvelous job since joining Denver.
- 12:02He really has. They call him the touch. He has that touch where he can drop it inside the 20 yard line.
- 12:07He has been very, very effective this year and we've got a time out with 1237 remaining in the first quarter from Cleveland.
- 12:13The Broncos and the Browns are scoreless.
- 12:15As head of this very successful company, you all know I hate yes men.
- 12:19Yes, sir.
- 12:20I want employees who aren't afraid to tell me what they think.
- 12:22Yes, sir.
- 12:23Fine. Now to save money, I want to switch from AT&T long distance to another service.
- 12:26Yes, sir.
- 12:27Then it's settled.
- 12:28Yes, sir.
- 12:29Sir.
- 12:30Willoughby.
- 12:31It would be a major mistake to replace the high quality of AT&T.
- 12:33A major mistake?
- 12:34Yes, sir.
- 12:35Won't we save a lot of money?
- 12:36Yes, sir.
- 12:37Maybe not.
- 12:37What?
- 12:38See, sir, on January 1, AT&T is lowered their out of state day and evening direct dialed rates across the board.
- 12:42Are you saying I'm wrong?
- 12:43Yes, sir.
- 12:44Quiet!
- 12:45Because on top of those price reductions, AT&T offers volume discount calling plans like Pro America and Pro State for even greater value.
- 12:51Willoughby.
- 12:51Sir.
- 12:52For proving me wrong and embarrassing me in front of all my employees, I'm going to resign, open a frozen yogurt stand and make you president of this very successful corporation.
- 13:00Willoughby.
- 13:01First of all, I want you all to know I hate yes men.
- 13:03Yes, sir.
- 13:03Yes, sir.
- 13:04AT&T Long Distance Service.
- 13:06Reliable, clear connections.
- 13:08Now at an even greater value.
- 13:09AT&T, the right choice.
- 13:11From the waves of the Pacific, through the heartland USA.
- 13:17From the old South to New England and past the long the way.
- 13:23From the Great Lakes to the Ryuk, from the mountains to the shore.
- 13:28We're your neighbor and you've made us America's favorite song.
- 13:34Yes, you're proud to say you've made us America's favorite song.
- 13:39K-Mine, the saving place.
- 13:41Mel Proctor with Dave Rowe back at Cleveland Stadium on a cold windy afternoon and obviously the weather is going to be a factor.
- 13:48These teams have never met in postseason play until today.
- 13:51Denver leads the all-time series, 8 to 3 and the Broncos have won the last seven games between these two teams.
- 13:56I think Dave, on a day without the wind, the cold, the snow, you might expect a high-scoring game with Bernie Kozar and John Elway,
- 14:03but on a day like this, who knows what to expect.
- 14:06Well, after that ball goes 10 yards, now it just starts to flutter.
- 14:08So, passing should not be a factor today, especially if the wind keeps up.
- 14:12First down for the Browns, we've got a misdrive from their 13-yard line.
- 14:15Biner and Mack are in the I-formation.
- 14:17Bernie Kozar with a play-action fake back to throw.
- 14:20They're going to blow this play dead.
- 14:21Penalty markers are down.
- 14:23Looks like the right tackle, Cody Horizon, may have moved early.
- 14:27First start, right tackle, five yards, first down.
- 14:31Horizon, who was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time, that'll set the Browns back to the nine-yard line.
- 14:36Herman Fontenot checks in. They like to use him in passing situations.
- 14:40And Ernest Biner comes out.
- 14:43Now, we are going to be able to see this game, aren't we?
- 14:45The way that snow's coming down in our spot, it's coming down hard here.
- 14:49First down and 15 from the Cleveland 9.
- 14:53Kozar back to throw from his old goal line.
- 14:55Looks to his right, guns the pass, it's caught by Ozzie Newton.
- 14:59Out of bounds at the 13-yard line.
- 15:01Lewis Wright was there in coverage, but he was juggling the pass and couldn't hold it.
- 15:06So, it's an incompletion.
- 15:07Yes, Mel, you have to have control of that ball when both feet come down.
- 15:10Whether you're inbounds or out of bounds, that's quite a story.
- 15:13They call it the completed pass.
- 15:15He bobbled the ball when he came down.
- 15:17Are you surprised, Dave, how frequently both Kozar and Elway are trying to throw
- 15:21into the weather conditions, into this wind?
- 15:24Well, neither one of them are really great running teams.
- 15:26Sammy Winder had his best day last week,
- 15:28but Cleveland has not gotten this far via the run, so they have got to pass the ball.
- 15:33Second down and 15 from the 9-yard line.
- 15:37Webster Flodder is wide to the left.
- 15:39Herman Fontenot is in motion out of the backfield.
- 15:41Kozar backpedals into the pocket, getting pressure, steps up, now running laterally.
- 15:45Heading for the far sidelines, he stumbles and he's pushed out of bounds at the 12-yard line.
- 15:50Kozar is not a very mobile quarterback.
- 15:52He averaged 0.8 yards per rush this year,
- 15:55unlike his counterpart, John Elway, who's a great scrambler.
- 15:58Yes, absolutely.
- 15:59Bernie Kozar, a lot of people say that he avoids that pressure by getting rid of the ball quickly.
- 16:05That time he just has no one to throw to.
- 16:07The wind is swirling.
- 16:08He's looking into the face of a lot of Broncos,
- 16:10especially the Bronco defense, because they move these linebackers away.
- 16:14Mecklenburg moves inside, outside.
- 16:16They just move all over the place, especially Hunley and Mecklenburg.
- 16:19Claris Weathers is in.
- 16:20He and Brian Brennan put out wide to the left side.
- 16:22Reggie Langhorn is wide to the right.
- 16:24Passing situation for Bernie Kozar.
- 16:26Fontenot is the lone setback.
- 16:28Kozar on third and 12, back to throw, setting up at the 4, fires the pass.
- 16:33He's caught at the 25-yard line by Reggie Langhorn, and he's got a first down.
- 16:37Hit immediately by Randy Robbins, San Luis Wright,
- 16:41and a big play by Kozar, getting the Browns out of the hole.
- 16:44They really did get him out of the hole.
- 16:45That was a big down.
- 16:46If he doesn't make that and the Broncos are able to hold him,
- 16:49they're going to have to punt from deep in their own territory.
- 16:51But Kozar, who threw last week for an NFL record playoff number of throws,
- 16:55has decided he's going to throw the ball today, regardless of what the weather is.
- 16:59Kozar against the Jets, completed 33 of 64 passes for 489 yards.
- 17:05The attempt, the completion, and the yardage are all NFL playoff marks.
- 17:09The
- 17:12Broncos are going to be the first to throw for the Browns at the Cleveland 25.
- 17:16No score with 1134 remaining in the first quarter.
- 17:18Three wide receivers for the Browns.
- 17:21Long count by Kozar. He'll throw again.
- 17:23Back he goes, looking to his left, guns the pass, and it's caught
- 17:26near the 40-yard line by Herman Fontenot,
- 17:29and he's wrestled down by the right quarterback, Mike Harden.
- 17:31But it's another first down for Cleveland.
- 17:33Kozar amazingly throwing with the wind, gusting the way it is.
- 17:36He's not particularly that tall a quarterback, so he needs that lane to throw in.
- 17:39That time his offensive line took the rush of Denver, just kind of spread him out,
- 17:43made him come around the outside, he stepped up in the pocket, found his receiver,
- 17:46and just drilled a bullet there.
- 17:48Webster Slatter goes wide to the left.
- 17:50Brennan and Fontenot put out wide to the right.
- 17:52First and 10 at the Cleveland 38-yard line.
- 17:54The tight end, Harry Holt shifts from the left side to the right side.
- 17:58Kevin Mack, just a low setback.
- 18:00Kozar on the handoff to Mack, starts up the middle, bounces to the outside,
- 18:03running to his right across the 40, puts his head down and drives to the 43-yard line.
- 18:07A gain of about five yards as Tom Jackson and Tony Lilly make this stop.
- 18:11We've got the two oldest linebackers in the NFL involved in this game.
- 18:14Tom Jackson, Brad Van Pelt of Cleveland, they're both 35.
- 18:17Jackson is a day older than Van Pelt.
- 18:20Well, and Jackson's quite an inspiration for the Broncos, as is Van Pelt for the Cleveland Browns.
- 18:24Both of them very vocal, emotional players, and really choose their respective defenses up.
- 18:29Second down and five from the Cleveland 43-yard line.
- 18:33Fontenot and Langhorne are wide to the left.
- 18:35Webster's slaughter is wide to the right.
- 18:40Kozar turns and hands to Kevin Mack straight ahead across the 45-50 into the Denver territory
- 18:45and tackles it to the Broncos, 42-yard line.
- 18:48Lewis Wright, Tony Lilly on the stop, Kevin Mack, the Browns leading rusher,
- 18:52zips off another first down.
- 18:55One of the concerns I had going down on the field, walking around with the footing there,
- 19:00this field has been torn up, but they rolled it, they put a lot of sand down, they painted it.
- 19:04The field looks as if it's staying in pretty good order right now.
- 19:10Mack's carried four times for 22 yards, the first down for the Browns, moving into Denver 42.
- 19:17And again it's Mack getting the call, blasting up the middle inside the 40 to the 38-yard line,
- 19:22and again a four, Carl Mecklenburg on the stop.
- 19:25He's headed for the Pro Bowl, the four-year veteran from Minnesota.
- 19:29Broncos defensively have Roulon Jones, Greg Cragen, and Andre Townsend up front.
- 19:34The linebackers in the outside, Jim Ryan and Tom Jackson.
- 19:36The inside backers are Carl Mecklenburg and Ricky Hundley.
- 19:39At the corners, Lewis Wright and Mike Harden.
- 19:41Strong safety is Steve Foley and the free safety, Dennis Smith.
- 19:44Randy Robbins is also seeing a lot of action in that spot.
- 19:46Smith missed last week's game with a bad knee.
- 19:49Now one of the things the Broncos have got to do is get that penetration up front.
- 19:52They cannot go man for man with sides because Cleveland outweighs their defensive front.
- 19:56Langhorn is wide left, Flatter is wide to the right.
- 19:59Fontano and Mack are the running backs.
- 20:01Kozlar with a play-action fake rolling to his right, being chased.
- 20:04He's hit as he unrolls, and it's deflected and falls incomplete.
- 20:07He tried to hit Herman Fontano, he couldn't hold it.
- 20:10The ball squirted into the air and was nearly picked off by Lewis Wright, and it falls incomplete.
- 20:17They really need to run the ball in this situation.
- 20:19They had third down, they had second down at about six yards to go.
- 20:22I would have kept it on the ground, especially Kevin Mack.
- 20:24Because he had such good vision into the hole, he saw the scene.
- 20:27They'll pick up big yards. They've driven this ball from their own 13th, via the ground.
- 20:31Bernie Kozlar has completed two of five passes for 26 yards so far.
- 20:35Third down and seven from the Denver 39-yard line.
- 20:39No score from Chilly Cleveland.
- 20:41Back goes Kozlar, looks over the middle, he's got Fontano at the 20.
- 20:45Inside down to the 15-yard line, another first down.
- 20:49Dennis Smith dropped him at the 15-yard line, and it'll be a first down for the Cleveland Browns, deep in Denver territory.
- 20:56And when Fontano came off the ball, he immediately was picked up by Jim Ryan, the outside linebacker from Denver, and he completely fooled him.
- 21:03He gave a little hitch fake, he went back to the middle, he was running right down the center of the field wide open, had a 10-yard lead over Jim Ryan, who was trying to cover him.
- 21:11Bernie Kozlar likes to use a lot of different receivers.
- 21:15Last week against the Jets, he threw to nine different receivers.
- 21:21First down for Cleveland, moving left or right at the Denver 15-yard line.
- 21:25Slaughter is wide to the left, Langhorn is split to the right.
- 21:32Kozlar takes the snap, hands to Kevin Mack, flashing up the middle, breaking tackles, inside the 10, down to the 9-yard line.
- 21:39Andre Townsend, the right defensive end, made the tackle.
- 21:42Kozlar really mixing his plays well, Dave.
- 21:44Very, very well. But that's a good example right there of the vision that Mack has.
- 21:48He was starting to run that play, which was designed to go off tackle.
- 21:51That's what they call about the 5-7 hole, number, generically.
- 21:54All of a sudden, he cut back over the guard, found a seam.
- 21:57Mack has got great vision, that's why they rushed.
- 21:59A couple years ago, they rushed for over a thousand yards a piece.
- 22:02Ryan Brennan is in the game now, he's wide to the right.
- 22:04Webster Slaughter is wide to the left, second down and five.
- 22:09From about the 9-yard line, Fondo is in motion.
- 22:12Kozlar gives to Mack straight ahead, he's straightened up.
- 22:16Myrulan Jones, who brings him down at the 9, a tough 1-yard pick up for Kevin Mack, who gained over a thousand yards last year.
- 22:22Both he and Ernest Biner gained over a thousand last season, but they brought in a new offensive coordinator, and Lindy and Fata, and they've emphasized the pass this year with great success.
- 22:31Well, they've been able to move the ball down the field, and if you have that balance between run and pass, you can move the ball effectively.
- 22:37That's what the Cleveland Browns did not have in the past.
- 22:39They were known as the running team power of football, but with Kozlar and his leadership ability back there, and the ability to find that open receiver, that's what you want to do, have that balance between run and pass.
- 22:48Webster Slaughter, Reggie Langhorne is put out wide to the left.
- 22:51Clarence Weathers is wide to the right side.
- 22:55Kozlar, retreating, looks to his right.
- 22:57Guns at pass is caught at the 7-yard line by Brennan with the penalty marker down, and now they're waving it off and saying it's an incomplete pass.
- 23:04They've clapped it.
- 23:06We've got a flag down.
- 23:09Holding against Denver is the preliminary education by Chuck Everland.
- 23:14That probably would bring up a first down or third down, about three would have brought up a field goal position to kick a field goal, and I believe that'll give them a first down inside the problem, inside the 5-yard line.
- 23:22Holding defense number 20.
- 23:26Half a distance to the goal.
- 23:28First down.
- 23:29Penalty against Lewis Wright, a 12-year veteran from San Jose State, so it'll be first and goal to go at the 4-yard line.
- 23:37Double-tide ends the game now, Travis Tucker and Harry Holt for Cleveland.
- 23:43Given the Browns an emotional lift to have Ernest Beiner back.
- 23:47He's a fiery, emotional type player, just a thing of fine running back and a good blocker.
- 23:51First and goal to go, and Beiner is in there with Kevin Mack.
- 23:55Flip behind Kozar.
- 24:00Fake to Mack, Kozar throwing it to the end zone, and it's dropped to the end zone.
- 24:06Harry Holt was unable to hold it.
- 24:09They don't throw to Holt very often, but that one would have been sick if he'd held on.
- 24:14Well, they faked a great running play-action pass.
- 24:16He faked into the line.
- 24:17Everybody thought that Beiner and Mack was going to get the ball.
- 24:19Harry Holt snuck off the line.
- 24:21He was wide open.
- 24:22He just, the ball kind of wobbled in that wind, and he just didn't come down with a catch.
- 24:26He should have caught that ball.
- 24:27That was a big one.
- 24:28Major Everett checks into the Browns' backfield.
- 24:30Normally he's a special-team player.
- 24:33Second down, goal to go from the 4-yard line.
- 24:35Kevin Mack and Everett are in the I-formation with Everett to lead back.
- 24:38The pitch to Mack running to his left, and he fumbles the football.
- 24:42A big pile up near the 5-yard line, and the Browns have recovered.
- 24:46Travis Tucker recovered it.
- 24:51Well, that could have been a crucial play to fumble down on the 4- or 5-yard line.
- 24:54They're going into the end zone that they like to go into towards the doghouse, I guess you'd call it.
- 24:59They call that area the dog pound.
- 25:00The dog pound.
- 25:01Well, there's a lot of dogs down there, and I'm saying that with respect to the people here in Cleveland.
- 25:05People wearing dog masks and have their faces painted, and they throw dog bones and biscuits out of the field.
- 25:11They fart.
- 25:14Third down, goal to go from the 6-yard line.
- 25:16Webster Slaughter and Reggie Langhorn go wide to the left.
- 25:19Barrett's weather is just wide to the right.
- 25:21Fontenot is the lone setback, running in motion.
- 25:24Back goes Kozar, swings it out of the backfield to Fontenot, breaks the tackle, and he is in for a touchdown!
- 25:37Herman Fontenot is hit at the 5-yard line by the strong safety Tony Lilly, broke the tackle and took it in for a touchdown.
- 25:43The Browns have the lead.
- 25:45As Fontenot came out of the backfield, he's swinging one-on-one with the coverage.
- 25:49Lilly kind of flipped a little bit, tried to dive at his leg.
- 25:52He hit Fontenot, but Fontenot was able to jump over top of him and go in for a score.
- 25:57Jeff Gossett will hold for Mark Mosley, who was the hero last week, kicking the field goal in the second overtime to give the Browns the win over the Jets.
- 26:05It's 6-0 Cleveland, and they're howling in the dog pound.
- 26:08This is the culmination of an 87-yard drive in this kind of weather.
- 26:11That's tremendous.
- 26:14While it's spotted out by Gossett, Mosley's kick is good.
- 26:19And with 5 minutes, 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter in this AFC Championship game from Cleveland, it's the Browns 7, and the Broncos nothing.
- 26:28The right parts.
- 26:30Mr. Goodran has the right replacement parts for your General Motors car.
- 26:34Parts that fit, engineered for your car by people who designed your car.
- 26:39Parts for every make and every model of virtually every GM car and light truck on the road today.
- 26:45So keep that great GM feeling with genuine GM parts.
- 26:50And Mr. Goodran, no one knows your GM car better. No one.
- 26:55Alka-Seltzer presents Rescues from Modern Living.
- 26:59Today, the coffee klats.
- 27:00The other morning, me and the girls got together at Delmas for coffee.
- 27:03She served a strudel.
- 27:04She said the recipe had been in her family for years.
- 27:06I think the strudel was.
- 27:08No wonder they call it a coffee klats.
- 27:10By the time I left, I was klatsing my head and stomach.
- 27:13When your body is feeling antisocial, send the bubbles of Alka-Seltzer to the rescue.
- 27:17Because speed is what you need to relieve your sour stomach with a headache. Fast.
- 27:21Alka-Seltzer is a Rescues.
- 27:23He was only a director.
- 27:25A moment in the NFL.
- 27:27It was the year Alma Layden resigned as Commissioner of the NFL and was replaced by Burt Bell, co-owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 27:32Bell moved the league headquarters from Chicago to the Philadelphia suburbs of Valley Kinwood.
- 27:36It was the year substitutions were limited to no more than three men at a time.
- 27:39And it was the year the NFL became a coast to coast league by allowing the Cleveland franchise to move to Los Angeles.
- 27:44It was the year that saw the formation of the rival All-American Football Conference with 18.
- 27:48That year was 1946.
- 27:50This is Jack O'Rourke.
- 27:54The Cleveland Browns drove 91 yards on 15 plays.
- 27:57Bernie Kozak completing a five-yard pass to Herman Fondo.
- 28:00And Mark Mosley's conversion has given the Browns a 7-0 lead.
- 28:03We mentioned Denver has won the last seven games between these two teams.
- 28:06Cleveland's last victory was here at Cleveland Stadium in 1974 when they won 23-21.
- 28:12Denver has won four of the five games played here.
- 28:14But the Browns lead this one 7-0 as Mosley tees it up.
- 28:17Ken Bell and Gene Lang are backseat for the Denver Broncos standing at the 10 awaiting the kick.
- 28:23More importantly, they were able to control the clock and control the tempo of the game.
- 28:27Here's Mosley's kickoff.
- 28:29High short kick into the wind will be taken by Bell at the 10 straight ahead to the 15.
- 28:33To the 20, he's nailed right there because the penalty marker dies.
- 28:37The Browns take great pride in their special team.
- 28:40D.D. Hoggard was down at a really lay a hit on Bell.
- 28:44Of course, that flag was thrown away from the ball.
- 28:46It was thrown probably 15 yards upfield.
- 28:48So it's something, some type of action that happened coming downfield.
- 28:51Either a blind, illegal block or it could have been going against the covered team
- 28:56because referee immediately threw that flag as they were running down.
- 28:59And let's pause five seconds for station identification.
- 29:0231 degrees at noon. This is 67 WMAQ Radio Chicago.
- 29:07Walking below the waist.
- 29:10Number 57, Emily Fanchi.
- 29:13Half the distance to the goal.
- 29:15Walking below the waist against Tom Jackson and the Denver Broncos and the special teams.
- 29:19And again, the Broncos will have poor field position beginning this ride at the 10 following the penalty.
- 29:24Now for Denver, they're in the dog pound, as you call it down there.
- 29:28The noise is deafening.
- 29:30Elway has got to, if he wants to do any motion, he's got to go with hands.
- 29:33They go to bring motion.
- 29:34He's got to, he's got his work cut out for coming out of that end zone.
- 29:37Dan Johnson goes wide to the right.
- 29:39Keith Sewell with a foot out wide to the left.
- 29:42First down for the Broncos at the Denver 10.
- 29:46Elway will stay on the ground with a handoff.
- 29:48This is Sammy Winder running to his left, turns the corner and he's knocked out at the 12 yard line.
- 29:55And, and for Dixon, the goal ball quarterback making the stop for the Cleveland Browns.
- 29:59He's the young man who dubs the Browns defense to the dogs.
- 30:03Boy, that's all it is in this town.
- 30:05We walked around the stadium before the game.
- 30:07It's amazing, the dog bones and dog faces, dog ears.
- 30:11It's amazing the way these people have gone to the dogs.
- 30:14Five yard pick up, second down and five from the 15 yard line.
- 30:21Steve Watson is wide to the right.
- 30:25Long step back is Sammy Winder.
- 30:26Mobley, the tight end is in motion.
- 30:28Play action fake to Winder.
- 30:29Elway with time, guns it over the middle and the pass is caught by Steve Watson and he is really tagged at the 29 yard line.
- 30:36Chris Rockins, the big hitter, is the man who stuck him at the first down for Denver.
- 30:40And for Steve Watson, he is the culmination of his and the twilight of his career, nine years coming, nine years.
- 30:45The thing that's so interesting about him, he was a free agent, came out of Temple University in Philadelphia.
- 30:50Nobody, you know, you never hear a big time wide receiver coming out of Temple University.
- 30:54Came out there and he has never missed a game since 1979.
- 30:59First half for the Broncos, moving right to left from the Denver 30.
- 31:02Cleveland leads seven to nothing.
- 31:04Will Hyde is back in the backfield along with Sammy Winder.
- 31:07Hand off to Winder straight ahead, grinding it out to the 35 yard line where Clay Matthews makes the stop.
- 31:13Defensively for Cleveland, they have Reggie Camp, Bob Golick and Carl Hirston up front.
- 31:17Four outstanding linebackers, Chip Banks and Clay Matthews.
- 31:20Eddie Johnson and Anthony Griggs at the corner, maybe two of the best in man-to-man coverage in the NFL.
- 31:25Frank Minifield and Henford Dixon.
- 31:27The strong safety is Ray Ellis and the free safety is Chris Rockins to replace the late Don Rogers.
- 31:32Second down and four for Denver from the Broncos, 36.
- 31:41Steve Sewell is in motion, Elway on the handoff to Winder, slamming to his right and doesn't get much.
- 31:46Stop at the line of scrimmage by Chip Banks, a five-year veteran from USC.
- 31:50Now as I look down the field, one of the things, the first thing I noticed was the split of the Denver Broncos.
- 31:56Their two guards are splitting up.
- 31:57Normal split between the linemen is about two feet at guard center, about a foot and a half at guard center,
- 32:03then two feet between the guard and the tackle and of course the end splits out.
- 32:06Denver is splitting Bishop, especially splitting about a yard wide, as is Mark Cooper on the other side.
- 32:12They really are splitting them wide trying to open those inside lanes.
- 32:15The Broncos send Vance Johnson and Mark Jackson into the game, third down and two.
- 32:19The Browns with six defensive back to them there, Elway from the shotgun.
- 32:23Back he goes, retreating inside the 30, looks over the middle.
- 32:28He's got a man open to complete the pass, Vance Johnson, no one near him as he turned to make his cut.
- 32:33He apparently slips and now a little scuffle breaks out between Chief Bishop and the Denver Broncos and a couple of the Browns.
- 32:40Johnson might have been able to pick up some additional yardage, but as he turned to run up field, he lost his footing.
- 32:46And we were down on the field before the game and there are some slippery areas.
- 32:49A lot of it is sand, what they do when they repair dugout areas, they put sand down.
- 32:53Procedure penalty coming up against Denver.
- 32:58I see the flag, it's way over here on the sideline.
- 33:00And the Broncos are upset, Elway along with Dave Sutter, the left tackle, are protesting.
- 33:07Illegal kick, number 70, five yards, third down.
- 33:12Illegal shift, called on Dave Sutter, the left tackle.
- 33:16Now that's an interesting call because Sutter was not in a three-point stance.
- 33:19He didn't have his hand down on the line.
- 33:21He was standing up, he did move, but that movement didn't draw anybody offside, but they called that an illegal shift.
- 33:27Penalty cost the Broncos a first down.
- 33:29Instead of having a first down, it'll be third and seven from the 33.
- 33:34Vance Johnson is wide to the right.
- 33:36Steve Watson put out to the left side.
- 33:40Shotgun for Elway.
- 33:42Back he goes, getting some pressure, hurries a pass over the middle of his incomplete midfield.
- 33:47Reggie Camp dropped John Elway in the backfield just as he got rid of it.
- 33:51He was trying to hit Gerald Willehyde, but there was no way he could complete that pass.
- 33:55Now they had a twist on up in the middle where the linemen exchanged responsibilities.
- 34:00The two tackles came inside and Camp came around them on a twist.
- 34:03And Elway was looking right down the face of Reggie Camp.
- 34:07Boy, he just barely got that ball off before.
- 34:09And when he got hit, he got hit and probably flew back about five yards after the contact.
- 34:14Mike Horan is in the front, playing the leading seven-and-nothing with a minute 44 remaining in the first quarter.
- 34:19Gerald McNeil standing at the round 25, bouncing up and down, trying to stay warm, wearing gloves on both hands.
- 34:28Horan takes the snap, gets it away.
- 34:30Another good kick, a driving spiral taken by McNeil at the 20, running to his right across the 25, 30, 35, and trips up at the 37.
- 34:38He fumbles the football, and let's see who's got it.
- 34:42It's like the Browns have recovered, and they have.
- 34:46Horan doing another magnificent job, a 47-yard kick into the wind.
- 34:51Oh, the low driving kick is the kind of kick that you want to return.
- 34:55And as Gerald McNeil, just as exuberant to get in there, he dove and just about lost the ball.
- 35:00And we've got a timeout with a minute 33 remaining in the first quarter.
- 35:03The Cleveland Browns leading the Denver Broncos, seven-and-nothing.
- 35:06Bartender. Hey, come on, that's on the nice side.
- 35:09Serve it up, Coldwell's in the heart of the nitty-gritty city.
- 35:11Ex-DJ, huh?
- 35:12Yeah, it's all a rock and roll.
- 35:13A light beer, please.
- 35:14Hey, you pick it, I'll pour it.
- 35:15All light beers are the same.
- 35:17Contrary, amigo. Bud Light's the light beer with the first name and taste.
- 35:20Okay, Bud Light then.
- 35:21By request.
- 35:23Bud Light.
- 35:24Ask for Bud Light, because everything else is just a light.
- 35:27Bartender, another Bud Light.
- 35:28Hey, I'm out of here, but take it away, something to serve.
- 35:30Hey, Friday night, day and night, me and the Brooklyners, giving Bud Light.
- 35:33And I have a book, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 35:36Now, Proctor with Dave Rowe back in Cleveland with the Browns lead seven-and-nothing,
- 35:43and this is the NFL on NBC.
- 35:453-2-1, liftoff.
- 35:51You are now entering space, office space, crafted by DNL.

- 36:13To the computer room.
- 36:15For those who command the technology, you have entered space, office space,
- 36:19crafted by DNL. Ideas in space, crafted by DNL.
- 36:23Office and work, work, work, work, offices and work is hard and you, the store, the first, the end, yeah.
- 36:34DNL office furniture company stationed downtown Chicago, Schomburg and Chicago North.
- 36:38Call 527-3636.
- 36:45Now Proctor with Dave Rowe back in Cleveland Stadium with the Browns lead the Broncos seven-and-nothing
- 36:49in this AFC championship game with a minute 33 remaining in the first quarter.
- 36:53And the Browns moving left or right to begin this drive from the 36-yard line.
- 36:57Bernie Kozar is from the state of Ohio. He's from Boardman, Ohio and was the 1981 High School Player of the Year here.
- 37:03On the handoff to Kevin Mack running to his right and he's stacked up at the 39-yard line
- 37:08by 14-year veteran Tom Jackson of the Denver Broncos.
- 37:12Now that is the set play that I would use if I was Bernie Kozar or the Cleveland Browns.
- 37:18Give that ball to Kevin Mack. See if they can pick up as long as they can pick up three or four yards on that first down.
- 37:23Keep the ball on the ground. Control it on the ground and use that pass when it's opportunistic to pick up that wide receiver.
- 37:29But control this game via the ground.
- 37:32Slatter and Brennan split wide to the left.
- 37:34Herman Fondo is in the backfield now along with Kevin Mack.
- 37:38Second down at seven from the 40. Kozar with play action.
- 37:41Back to throw, getting pressure and he throws it. It's picked off by Ricky Hundley of Denver.
- 37:45The big linebacker breaks the tackle, rumbles across the 40 and is brought down at the 35-yard line of Cleveland.
- 37:52Rulon Jones was right in Bernie Kozar's face. There's a good example of exactly what I'm saying.
- 37:57You've got second down. You've just picked up four yards on the run.
- 38:00What did you do? Drop back and go to the pass. It's kind of crazy.
- 38:03You know, the weather is a factor here. You don't force things.
- 38:06And that time he forced the ball. He threw it into coverage.
- 38:09It looked as if it was intended right for Ricky Hundley. He was right in the right position.
- 38:12And this is what Denver has done so effectively all season.
- 38:15They have turned the ball over. They have gotten those turnovers.
- 38:18And they've got 30 percent of their points are scored by turnover.
- 38:21Kozar was intercepted only ten times during the regular season.
- 38:24He threw two interceptions on consecutive passes last week against the Jets.
- 38:28Gerald Rulhide is nailed in the Denver backfield by Kip Banks.
- 38:31He got to him before he could get out on the starting blocks and drop them for a four-yard loss.
- 38:35Great play.
- 38:38Now, differently out for Denver, they know they can't run the ball and run it consistently against the Cleveland defense.
- 38:43Cleveland's got too much strength in the front seven players.
- 38:46So they're going to have to pass the ball.
- 38:48Plus, they've got a quarterback to sit back there and he can take you to death if he has the time.
- 38:51So I would look for them to go for the pass in this situation.
- 38:54The pass-rushing special with Sam Clancy, a 260-pounder from Pipps, is in the game now for Cleveland.
- 39:00Second and 14. Back goes Elway, getting some pressure.
- 39:03And he swings it out of the backfield to Sandy Winder, and he's stopped.
- 39:07At the 47-yard line.
- 39:10He's got the 43-yard line by Kip Banks.
- 39:12He's had a great first quarter, and that will bring the first period to an end here in Cleveland.
- 39:17The end of the first quarter in this AFC championship game.
- 39:20It's the Cleveland Braves 7 and the Denver Broncos nothing.
- 39:24This is Maury Levy, editor of Video Review Magazine, and we're here with Don Kobus of Samsung Electronics.
- 39:29Where are things headed in general now?
- 39:31We keep hearing so much about the yen versus the dollar, and how does that affect the won
- 39:35and the way Samsung will be selling?
- 39:38Well, the target of the yen-dollar situation was in fact the yen.
- 39:42And as a result, the price of Japanese goods will continue to rise.
- 39:46In the case of the won, we're not as much affected by the program.
- 39:49In many cases, our prices didn't go up much at all or, in fact, remain the same.
- 39:54So depending on a product-by-product basis, you're likely to find the Korean products to be still a great value.
- 40:01We're finding that more and more retailers are selecting Samsung to be a part of the product lines that they offer their customers.
- 40:07The nice part about it is you can too.
- 40:10For your nearest Samsung dealer, dial 1-800-255-2550.
- 40:16Look for Samsung, affordable electronics.
- 40:20You want service, and State Farm is there.
- 40:23Is this the number we call for service on our car insurance?
- 40:26No, that's for homeowners.
- 40:28You know, you ought to have a State Farm agent.
- 40:30Yeah, then we know who to call for everything.
- 40:32Auto, home, life, or health.
- 40:34People know State Farm agents will be there when they need help.
- 40:38That's what makes State Farm insurance such a value, service.
- 40:41As life is a neighbor
- 40:43That you can't put a price on.
- 40:45State Farm is there
- 40:49Mel Proctor with Dave Rowe back at Cleveland Stadium where the Browns lead the Denver Rockos 7-0 to begin the second quarter.
- 40:55The Browns enter this game on a roll.
- 40:57They've won six in a row, nine in the last ten, and twelve in the last fourteen.
- 41:00The Broncos, on the other hand, have gone two and two over the last four games.
- 41:04And over the last nine games, they've been a familiar pattern.
- 41:06Win one, lose one, win one, lose one.
- 41:08And they have not won consecutive games since the eighth and ninth weeks of the regular season.
- 41:12And if that holds true, of course, today they would be up for a losing choice today.
- 41:18Bronco coach Dan Reeves said he felt it was important to score first here to silence this big crowd.
- 41:23But the Browns got on the board first.
- 41:25Third and 16th for the Denver Broncos, the Cleveland 42-yard line.
- 41:29John Elway from the shotgun with four wide receivers being chased, running to his right, stopped, being chased again, breaks the tackle.
- 41:36Now firing across the grain on the run.
- 41:38It's fluttering in the wind and the pass is caught at the 35-yard line by Vance Johnson, who had to run about 15 yards coming back to the ball to catch it.
- 41:46That was an amazing play by Vance Johnson and by John Elway.
- 41:50Picture this, Vance. He's rolling to his right.
- 41:52Coming, he's almost out of bounds. He avoids two tackles.
- 41:55At the last second he sees Vance Johnson all the way across the field.
- 41:58He throws about 50 yards.
- 41:59Now we're having a few words on the field right now.
- 42:01General Willehyde is getting into it with hand prediction of Cleveland.
- 42:04But he threw that ball, probably just quickly flipped it about 50 yards across the field.
- 42:08Probably about 40 yards across the field.
- 42:10He said Vance Johnson had to come back 15 yards to catch it.
- 42:14Elway ran 30, Johnson ran 15, and the total yardage gained is seven yards.
- 42:19That would be 4,000.
- 42:22Four from 10.
- 42:24He's on the 36.
- 42:26Again, the shotgun.
- 42:28Now Elway fronted out of this position last week.
- 42:31He's going to do it again.
- 42:32Quick kick by Elway.
- 42:35The ball lands at the 15. Takes a Cleveland bounce heading toward the sidelines and is out of bounds at the 16-yard line.
- 42:42That's what he did last week. He sets up in a shotgun formation.
- 42:45Just before the snap, he takes about three steps back, takes the ball, and just punches it over the head.
- 42:49This week it worked. They're inside the 20.
- 42:51And we've got a time out with Cleveland leading Denver 7-0 in 13-55, remaining in the second quarter.
- 42:57Next.
- 42:58The doctor will see you now, Ms. Grape, in his car.
- 43:00Delta Electronics, case history number 85.
- 43:02Set the CM car with the Delco Bose Music System.
- 43:04Ah, Ms. Grape.
- 43:05Yes.
- 43:06You just want to slip into this examination gown, make yourself comfortable in the passenger seat, and tell me what's bothering you.
- 43:10Where's your doctor's certificate?
- 43:11Please, best new seatbelt.
- 43:12Where are we going?
- 43:13We're going to design the ultimate automotive music system for select GM cars.
- 43:17We have more patients, Doc.
- 43:18I know we have more patients, but I like to take care, like Delco Bose does.
- 43:21Now, open your ears and say ah.
- 43:23Ah.
- 43:24Ah.
- 43:25A warning. When you hear a Delco Music System, you'll love it too much to leave it.
- 43:29Ah.
- 43:30There must be something wrong with you.
- 43:31He's faking, Doctor.
- 43:32Just a few more hours, and I think I'll just be fine.
- 43:33Well, I'll tell you what. Why don't I put you in the trunk?
- 43:35Delco Bose sounds so real, it will change how you feel about driving.
- 43:39Sports question. What TV commentator and ex-RAM played in 11 Pro Bowl games?
- 43:45Do-it-yourself question. Who can help you do any decorating job better?
- 43:50For questions about decorating, Sherwin-Williams has the answers.
- 43:54And for paint, wall coverings, floor coverings, window treatments, Sherwin-Williams has the quality.
- 43:59So for questions about Merlin Olson, check a sports almanac. But for decorating...
- 44:04The Cleveland Browns lead the Denver Broncos 7-0.
- 44:11Cleveland's scoring at a 5-yard pass from Bernie Kozar to Herman Fontenot at the 7-18 mark of the first quarter.
- 44:18Cleveland now will start this drive from this 17-yard line.
- 44:24Difficult to get a reading on the wind. It's swirls. It changes directions.
- 44:27It's blowing hard no matter which way it's blowing.
- 44:29Making it very difficult for both quarterbacks.
- 44:32Kozar waiting the snap from Setter.
- 44:35Turns and hands to Kevin Mack running to his left.
- 44:38And he is wrestled down near the 18-yard line by Ken Woodard.
- 44:42And I'm sure that when Bernie Kozar in his young, inexperienced position went to the sideline, Marty Schottenheimer said,
- 44:49Hey listen, we're moving the ball on the ground.
- 44:51Be able to just keep it on the ground.
- 44:53As long as we pick up 3, 4, 5 yards on first down, it brings up second and 4.
- 44:57Run it again.
- 44:58Kevin Mack is carried 10 times for 37 yards. It's second and 7 for the Browns.
- 45:03At the 19-yard line.
- 45:06Brennan is wide to the right.
- 45:09Back goes Kozar. Good protection. Looks to the right.
- 45:12Throws the pass and caught by Brennan who dances out of bounds.
- 45:15At the 27-yard line.
- 45:17Brian Brennan compared to Steve Largen at Seattle. Neither has great speed.
- 45:22Both run precise pass routes. Have good hands.
- 45:25Possession receiver. And he gives the Browns a first down.
- 45:29Oh, he has very soft hands. He looks the ball in very, very well when he catches the ball.
- 45:33And that's a trademark that Largen has done for so many years.
- 45:36He looks the ball all the way into his hands.
- 45:38Never does he make that mistake trying to run before he catches the ball.
- 45:43Ozzie Newsom, puts out wide to the right.
- 45:45Along with Reggie Langhorn, Webster Slaughter.
- 45:48To the near side along with Herman Fontenot.
- 45:50Kozar with a straight drop. Again with time.
- 45:53Pumps. Looks over the middle. Lofts the pass.
- 45:55It's picked off by Jim Ryan of Denver.
- 45:57Down the far sideline to the 30. 25, 20, 15, 10.
- 46:01Knocked out of bounds at the 8-yard line.
- 46:03Cody Risen knocked him out of bounds.
- 46:05And he would have scored for the Denver Broncos.
- 46:08And this stuns this crowd of 80,000 here.
- 46:10Kozar's just making a couple mistakes.
- 46:12That time he was under a lot of pressure.
- 46:14The Broncos know that he's not a real mobile quarterback.
- 46:16So they're trying to get pressure up the cut in his face.
- 46:19Kozar brought the ball down. Looked like he was going to run.
- 46:21Last second he just flipped it out there.
- 46:23Ryan was standing right in front of his receiver.
- 46:25Took the ball, put it under his arm, and ran down the sideline.
- 46:28Ryan did not have an interception during the regular season.
- 46:31He's an 8-year veteran from William & Mary who began his Denver career on a special team.
- 46:35First and goal to go for the Broncos.
- 46:37Following an interception by Jim Ryan.
- 46:39Cleveland leads 7-0.
- 46:42Elway stays on the ground with a handoff.
- 46:44The Stanley Winder is slipping and sliding down to the 7-yard line.
- 46:48A gain of two as Chip Banks makes the stop for the Cleveland Browns.
- 46:51Now anytime you have a mobile quarterback like a John Elway who has the rushing yardage that he has,
- 46:56you always have to be very aware that he can run the bootleg.
- 46:59That time if he pulls that ball back out of the running back's belly and takes it around the side,
- 47:03he walks into the end zone.
- 47:05They have coaches high atop this stadium that see those type of things,
- 47:08and they're picking out those plays for him continually.
- 47:11Second and goal to go for the 7s.
- 47:12Steve Watson's foot thought to the right along with Mark Jackson.
- 47:15Will Hyde and Winder in the eye formation.
- 47:18Elway with a fake to Winder rolling to his right.
- 47:21Byers on the run to pass his cut.
- 47:23By Fannie Winder driven out of bounds at about the 2-yard line.
- 47:27Knocked out by Henford Dixon.
- 47:29Getting back to Kozars interceptions.
- 47:30He's already been intercepted twice.
- 47:32He had the best interception ratio in the NFL this year.
- 47:36He was intercepted only 10 times in over 500 pass attempts.
- 47:40So it's rare that he throws two and he threw two last week and they still beat the Jets.
- 47:44Well he made two critical mistakes in that first half, well so far in the first half.
- 47:49He made two poor choices.
- 47:50He tried to force the ball into great coverage.
- 47:52And Denver is known as an opportunistic defense.
- 47:55They react very quickly to the ball.
- 47:57I talked earlier about they don't have that great side.
- 47:59They just have that great ability to react quickly to the ball.
- 48:04And it looks like the Broncos will call a timeout with 12-17.
- 48:07Remaining in the second quarter here in Cleveland, the Browns lead the Broncos 7-0.
- 48:12In Japan you don't work to live, you live to work.
- 48:15Which may be why the average Japanese worker puts in almost 200 more hours a year than the average American.
- 48:22Now you could read about Japanese productivity in almost any magazine or newspaper.
- 48:27But to really understand the issue you need a publication that gives you the story behind the story.
- 48:32The Wall Street Journal.
- 48:33You see the journal relates the business world to the real world.
- 48:36For example, if you'd read on you would have learned that high Japanese productivity is causing trade conflicts with the West.
- 48:42And that the Japanese government has actually formed an agency, the Leisure Development Center, to find ways to get Japanese workers to take more time off.
- 48:50Will it work?
- 48:51Read the Wall Street Journal to find out.
- 48:53However, things do look bleak.
- 48:55It seems Leisure Development staffers are working weekends to get their work done.
- 48:59To subscribe call 800-345-8700. The Wall Street Journal. The daily diary of the American dream.

- 49:14But the price.
- 49:15Budget rent a car is going your way with Lincolns at just $39.99 a day.
- 49:20That's the price.

- 49:37Denver Broncos on the move facing a third and goal to go situation at the two yard line.
- 49:44Cleveland leading seven and nothing.
- 49:46Looks like the Broncos will be running against four or five man front.
- 49:53Cleveland is down there in the end zone and they're getting the doghouse.
- 49:58They're getting the dog yard. Whatever you want to call them. The dog area.
- 50:01You can see the dog bones lying in the end zone.
- 50:04Yeah, they're throwing them out of the end zone. They're so close to the field.
- 50:07Four man front for the Cleveland Brown.
- 50:10Bellwey from the shotgun. Third and goal.
- 50:12The inside handoff is Steve Sewell running to his left trying to turn the corner.
- 50:15Down the far sideline and knocked out a bounce short of a touchdown.
- 50:19Knocked out by Ray Ellis at the one yard line.
- 50:22Sewell who has four or five speed turned the corner and was driven out of bounds.
- 50:27A hard hit by Ellis and Denver will have to settle for a field goal attempt by Rich Carlin.
- 50:32What Sewell did that time was he out ran his blockers. He tried to get out wide.
- 50:36His blockers were blocking inside. He just ran right on by his blockers.
- 50:39He's got that great acceleration. He thought he could get to the corner and he came up short.
- 50:43I think if he had gotten behind that wall of blockers, the two guards, I think he would have gone in for a touchdown.
- 50:49This will be a 19 yard field goal attempt by Rich Carlin.
- 50:54As Jerry Kubiak holding for him, the ball is spotted down and Carlin's kick is good.
- 50:58But Denver, I'm sure unhappy at having to settle for a field goal.
- 51:01Carlin leaves the field clapping his hands. He'll settle for three points.
- 51:05And with 12.07 remaining in the second quarter, it's now Cleveland's seventh and Denver's three.
- 51:10One, three, 15, blasted, 40, short, 25, towel.
- 51:13I'll do two rows now, two in two hours, two to one.

- 52:48The Cleveland Browns lead the Denver Broncos 7 to 3. Denver picked off a pass.
- 52:52Jim Ryan intercepting Bernie Kozar. Denver drove down the one yard line with the Browns held.
- 52:58The Broncos had to settle for a field goal by Rich Carlos and it's now 7 to 3 Cleveland.
- 53:02Getting back to those dog bones.
- 53:04We'll see a run on dog bones at the stores here in Cleveland.
- 53:06It's unbelievable how many there are lying in the end zone.
- 53:09Well, they started this dog thing. They said we're going to be after you like a pack of dogs.
- 53:13And their defense has played that way. And boy, this town has reacted to that.
- 53:17Unbelievable.
- 53:18Here's Carlos kickoff. He hooks it heading toward the far sideline.
- 53:21Gerald McNeil takes it to 8 straight ahead of the 10. Cuts back at a 15, 20, 25, 30.
- 53:25Off to the 35 yard line, still driving. And finally, gang tackle and drop at the 37.
- 53:31Rick Dennison was the first Bronco to get to him.
- 53:33But a fine run back by Gerald McNeil who had a 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Pittsburgh this year.
- 53:39Now, doesn't he know you're not allowed to run that fast up in there?
- 53:42I'll tell you, he must have a tremendous amount of courage because he's running the ball up in there.
- 53:46He's just flying up. He's not looking for it. He's looking for that seam.
- 53:49And once he sees that seam, he just explodes up in there.
- 53:51He has no fear whatsoever of being hurt or anything. Just get upfield as far as you can get.
- 53:58Brown's ball, first down at the 37 yard line following that fine run back by McNeil.
- 54:03Backs in the I-formation, Biner and Kevin Mack.
- 54:08Bernie Kozler on the handoff to Mack. Bounces to the outside, running to his left.
- 54:11Bumbles the football and the Broncos indicate they've got it.
- 54:14In fact, it is picked up by Ken Woodard heading toward the end zone.
- 54:17To the 15, to the 10, to the 5, and he's into the end zone.
- 54:21The play though may have been blown dead. See if they bring it back.
- 54:26Oh boy, Roulant Jones ran in there and actually grabbed a referee and pulled him back and said,
- 54:31wait a minute, but here's Chuck Averlein.
- 54:33The ball was stumbled, was recovered by Denver. He's down by contact.
- 54:36Denver's ball, first and 10.
- 54:38It is Denver's ball, but no touchdown.
- 54:41It was recovered by one of the Broncos who was then hit by one of the Browns.
- 54:45And then after that took place, Woodard picked up the ball and ran it in for what he thought was a touchdown.
- 54:49But they'll bring it back and Denver will have the ball at the Cleveland 36.
- 54:53Well, they have the instant replay to review it and they may review it, but I didn't see any contact on the play.
- 54:59The ball kind of squirted out two or three times.
- 55:01And I did not see the contact on the play.
- 55:03Of course, they have the instant replay here in this championship game as they do in all the NFL games.
- 55:08And they may go ahead and review it. But the ball came out as soon as he got hit.
- 55:11As soon as he took the handoff. It's so important where placement is.
- 55:14The ball was bobbled. It never got to his stomach where he takes the ball.
- 55:18They picked it up and I just didn't see any contact at all.
- 55:21Well, Woodard picked it up, rolled over and got to his feet.
- 55:24He kind of collided with one of the Browns as he was in the process of picking the ball up.
- 55:27But the Browns player never really tackled it.
- 55:30You know, Mel, that instant replay that I think we're having a ruling now.
- 55:33After the replay, look.
- 55:36The ball was stumbled. Recovered by Denver.
- 55:39Down by contact. First ball, first and Denver.
- 55:43So the play stands.
- 55:46I was going to make just a quick mention.
- 55:48There were 374 instant replay viewings this year in the NFL.
- 55:52There were only 38 decisions to reverse the referee's call.
- 55:56First down for the Broncos is the Cleveland 37-yard line.
- 55:59Steve Sewell was in the backfield along with Gerald Wilhite.
- 56:03Elway on a fake reverse now straightens up the throw.
- 56:06Wants to go deep. Can't find a man open.
- 56:08Running across the 40. 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and out of bounds at about the 3-yard line.
- 56:15They faked a reverse. Elway wanted to throw deep.
- 56:18Couldn't find anyone and nearly scrambled for a touchdown.
- 56:21He's out of bounds at the 3.
- 56:23That's what he does so well.
- 56:25Quite a lot of questions this week after he severely sprained his ankle.
- 56:28And what does he do? He runs such a long distance.
- 56:30But I think Gerald Wilhite might have gotten hurt on the play.
- 56:33He hurt his shoulder last week.
- 56:35Had a slight separation. He's in obvious pain on the far sideline.
- 56:39So Elway, who ran for a touchdown last week against New England,
- 56:43runs it down to the 3-yard line and will be first and goal to go.
- 56:46And Wilhite is quite obviously in a lot of pain as he leaves the field.
- 56:52The Broncos now have Dean Lang in the backfield replacing Wilhite.
- 56:57They shift into the I-formation. First and goal to go from the 3.
- 57:01Double tight end.
- 57:03Hand off straight ahead is Lang who's hit and stopped short of the end zone.
- 57:07Dean Lang who had a big game last week against the Patriots after Wilhite got hurt.
- 57:12He carried 11 times for 44 yards against New England.
- 57:16I was surprised to see Wilhite start after suffering a shoulder separation last week.
- 57:22But he came back and started this game obviously in a lot of pain.
- 57:26And he is on the sideline. I don't think we'll see him again unless something happens to Dean Lang.
- 57:31Second down, goal to go at the 1-yard line.
- 57:34Dean Sewell lines up with a wingback on the right side.
- 57:37Elway on the handoff to Linder over the top and he can't get into the end zone.
- 57:41Stacked up in the middle of that Cleveland defensive line.
- 57:44And they are howling in the dog pound again.
- 57:47Well they tried to go right over top of the middle.
- 57:49The linebackers, what you do in that defense, you try to get your line and try to get penetration.
- 57:53Make a pile. Then the back tries to jump over top of the pile.
- 57:56And those linebackers are sitting back there.
- 57:58Chip Banks and Matthews, Greggs and Johnson.
- 58:01They are sitting back there waiting to see where the guy tries to jump.
- 58:04And then they just smash into him.
- 58:06I would look probably Denver's going to try to go wide on this play because they have been unsuccessful up the middle.
- 58:12On their last drive they had to settle for a field goal.
- 58:14A third and goal to go from the 1-yard line.
- 58:18Sewell has a wingback on the left side.
- 58:20He comes in motion.
- 58:21Elway with a play action fake looking into the end zone in trouble.
- 58:24He throws as he is hit and it is incomplete.
- 58:27He tried to hit Steve Sewell in the end zone but Clay Matthews was raped all over Elway as he threw the pass.
- 58:33And it will bring up a forced out situation.
- 58:35And let's see what Dan Rees will do here.
- 58:37Well he almost has to go for a touchdown in this situation.
- 58:40Three points is not going to help you. You will still be down.
- 58:43If he doesn't make the touchdown he at least has Cleveland backed up to their own 1-yard line.
- 58:47I think he is going to go for it.
- 58:49Oh boy and here comes Wilhite. Can you imagine that? That tells you the importance of a game.
- 58:53Gerald Wilhite is back in the game.
- 58:57He was the Broncos leading receiver this year with 64 catches.
- 59:01Fourth down, goal to go from the 1. It's a big crowd of over 80,000.
- 59:07Reacts to John Elway. Sewell is in motion.
- 59:11Elway takes the snap on the pitch to Wilhite running right.
- 59:14Dives into the end zone for a touchdown.
- 59:20What a play by Wilhite.
- 59:22He saw that end zone as just as he planted that right foot he started to leap.
- 59:26He was hit in mid-air by Chris Rockins.
- 59:28He just kind of twisted his way and when he came down he had the ball stretched out.
- 59:31And he came down in the end zone for a touchdown for the Denver Broncos.
- 59:34Wilhite who scored a touchdown during the regular season takes it in from 1-yard out.
- 59:38Denver has a lead 9-7 as Rich Carlos is back in the kick.
- 59:43With Gary Kubiak holding, Keith Bishop will center it.
- 59:46The Broncos regard him as the best kick snapper in the NFL.
- 59:49Kubiak spots it down and Carlos' kick is good.
- 59:53So it's 10-36 remaining in the second quarter.
- 59:55The Broncos have taken the lead 10-7.
- 59:57Well one of the things Dan Rees said is we've got to get this crowd out of the game.
- 1:00:01We've got to score early.
- 1:00:02They've scored on two turnovers, two big turnovers by Bernie Kozar.
- 1:00:06One of course, one was a bubble which wasn't actually his fault but yet he did not get the ball into the biners belly in a proper position.
- 1:00:14But two big turnovers result in 10 points and they have stunned the Denver Broncos.
- 1:00:17The crowd is now quiet.
- 1:00:19Coming up at halftime, Stan Martin will be along to update you on all sports.
- 1:00:23Stan will be talking to Don Crickie and Bob Crumpey who are standing by a giant stadium for the Redskins' Giants game, the NFC Championship.
- 1:00:29As part of today's doubleheader here on NBC Radio.
- 1:00:32Stan will also be chatting with Redskins' free safety Curtis Jordan.
- 1:00:35All coming up at halftime right here on the NFL on NBC.
- 1:00:40The Broncos drove 37 yards in five plays.
- 1:00:45Will Heit going over from one yard out and it's now Denver 10 and Cleveland 7.
- 1:00:50McNeil, Fontenot, drops back deep for the Cleveland Browns along with Reggie Langhorn.
- 1:00:58The Browns regard their special teams as the best in the NFL.
- 1:01:02The special teams coach is Bill Cower and they really take great pride in their special teams.
- 1:01:06With McNeil, a great runback man on both punts and kickoff.
- 1:01:10They do an outstanding job on coverage.
- 1:01:12They're third in the NFL on punt coverage.
- 1:01:15They do have a very, very effective feel of special teams.
- 1:01:18Special teams of course is a very vital part of this game.
- 1:01:23Here's a kickoff by Rich Carlos, a low line drive kick.
- 1:01:27McNeil will take it on the fly at the 6th across the 10 to the 15, 20, 25.
- 1:01:31After the 30 to the 32 yard line.
- 1:01:36Another good runback by the Ice Cube.
- 1:01:38Gerald McNeil, Joey Hackett made the stop for the Denver Broncos.
- 1:01:41McNeil is giving Cleveland excellent field position.
- 1:01:44Well the one thing you want to do now if you're Bernie Cotar is you don't want to panic.
- 1:01:47You've had a lot of things go wrong.
- 1:01:49He throws two interceptions, they fumbled the ball once, but they're not in a bad position.
- 1:01:53They are still playing good solid football and defense.
- 1:01:56They have to get their offense cranked up and he has to make everyone in that position.
- 1:02:00He has to make everyone in that huddle believe that he's the leader of this team.
- 1:02:04First down for Cleveland at the 31 yard line.
- 1:02:09Bondino and Langhorn go wide to the right.
- 1:02:12Webster Slaughter is wide to the left.
- 1:02:14Cotar will throw on first down.
- 1:02:16He swings it out of the backfield to Kevin Mack who gets a block at the 30,
- 1:02:19across the 35 and the 40 and he's got a first down out to the 42 yard line.
- 1:02:24Mike Harden, the right quarterback, made the stop.
- 1:02:26He was named the Broncos most valuable defensive player and one of the Broncos is very slow to get up.
- 1:02:32That's Jim Ryan who intercepted a pass earlier in this half.
- 1:02:36Well the one thing that the Broncos do believe is the magic of Bernie Cotar and that's a good, safe play.
- 1:02:41It's a heady play.
- 1:02:42Of course he plays a call by the coaching staff.
- 1:02:44What they want to do is get that confidence back with him.
- 1:02:47Allow him to complete two or three passes, get some success.
- 1:02:50It's a swing pass out of the backfield.
- 1:02:52It's a safe pass.
- 1:02:53If it's incomplete, it's going to fall incomplete.
- 1:02:55There's a chance or a risk of it being intercepted.
- 1:02:57So if the ball falls, he doesn't lose anything.
- 1:03:00If Mack catches it like he did, he picks up 10 yards in the first down.
- 1:03:03Safe, safe play.
- 1:03:05Bernie Cotar who led the University of Miami to a national championship in 1983.
- 1:03:09He's 12 days younger than this year's Heisman Trophy winner Vinnie Tessiverdi.
- 1:03:13And we'll take a break with the Denver Broncos leading the Cleveland Browns 10 to 7.
- 1:03:17Oh what a sweet sensation, oh this is so good, baby, what a pleasure.
- 1:03:25It's a funny sweet sensation, oh this is so good.
- 1:03:31It's a fluffy golden sunshade, I'm feeling numb.
- 1:03:35This is so good, baby, take more, I'm in love.
- 1:03:39And oh this cupcake's a few times too.
- 1:03:42Oh what a sweet sensation.
- 1:03:47The injured Denver linebacker Jim Ryan is coming off the field.
- 1:03:50This is the NFL on NBC.

- 1:04:40Call 228-5700.
- 1:04:43Then you'll see your office will run wonderfully.
- 1:04:46That's 228-5700.
- 1:04:48First and 10 for the Cleveland Browns at the 43 as Bernie Kozar lost the pass.
- 1:04:56And on the right flat complete during his final and he stopped in his tracks at the 46 yard line.
- 1:05:01Gain of three on the play as Dennis Smith made the tackle.
- 1:05:04Darren Como, a five-year runner from Arizona State, is the place he injured Jim Ryan at linebacker for the Denver Broncos.
- 1:05:10Como was the most valuable player on the special teams this year for the Bronx.
- 1:05:14It'll be second and sixth at the 47 of Cleveland.
- 1:05:17Denver leading 10-7 with 939 remaining in the first half.
- 1:05:22Webster Slaughter, a rookie from San Diego State, puts out wide to the left.
- 1:05:27They flip Biner and Reggie Langhorn wide to the right.
- 1:05:30Kevin Mack is the lone setback.
- 1:05:32Bernie Kozar backpedals, looks left, fires the Mack at the 40, gets a block across the 45-50.
- 1:05:38And deep in the Denver territory at the 45 yard line, Rulan Jones made the tackle.
- 1:05:44What a great block by Paul Farron to come out there.
- 1:05:47It's a swing pass out of there.
- 1:05:48It's like a flip screen, they call it, where the back kind of slips out of the backfield.
- 1:05:52Then your linemen, they hit, they hold for about two seconds and they flow out to the field.
- 1:05:57And Paul Farron just knocks the corner back just as he's about to make the corner to tackle.
- 1:06:01He hits, excuse me, with Darren Como, he hits and springs Mack free.
- 1:06:05Farron had been starting a left tackle.
- 1:06:07He's moved to left guard with Ricky Bolden returning to action.
- 1:06:09Bolden had been out of action for nine games of broken arms.
- 1:06:13Kozar on the handoff to Mack, running right.
- 1:06:15Two Broncos nail him at the 45 yard line.
- 1:06:18Ricky Hundley was the first man to get to him.
- 1:06:20He led the Broncos in tackles this year with 164.
- 1:06:24Also got help from Darren Como.
- 1:06:27And it'll be second and 10, no gain on the play.
- 1:06:30Now you have to look for, to second down and 10 now.
- 1:06:35They didn't make anything, so you're going to have to look for Bernie Kozar to probably go to the air again.
- 1:06:39He has not been very successful.
- 1:06:41Second down and 10 from the 45 yard line.
- 1:06:46Bono is wide to the left.
- 1:06:49And split out to the right side is Bronin.
- 1:06:53Long count by Kozar.
- 1:06:55Play action fake.
- 1:06:56Back to throw going long down field and it's incomplete at the 20 yard line.
- 1:07:00And Tennes for Webster's slaughter, but Randy Robbins broke up the pass.
- 1:07:06As a defensive team you play strategy, you play statistics.
- 1:07:10Your strategy is dictated on the statistics of your opponent.
- 1:07:13They know that Bernie Kozar, when he gets in that second down and 10 yards,
- 1:07:16there's very little chance that he's going to run the ball.
- 1:07:18So they were putting a hard pass rush.
- 1:07:20Just throwing all caution to the wind on the run.
- 1:07:23They're guarding in the secondary and they get right with Denver Broncos, that is.
- 1:07:27And the term throwing caution to the wind certainly fits today.
- 1:07:30The wind is a factor.
- 1:07:31That's for sure.
- 1:07:32Kozar has completed six of 14 passes for 85 yards in a touchdown, but he's been intercepted twice.
- 1:07:37He's back to throw on third and 10.
- 1:07:39Guns it over the middle and the pass is caught.
- 1:07:41Nope, incomplete.
- 1:07:43Trying to hit Webster's slaughter, got his hands on it, but couldn't hold it.
- 1:07:46And he gets up limping.
- 1:07:47He took a good stick from Dennis Smith.
- 1:07:50One of the things that Denver does so well is to react in the secondary.
- 1:07:53They're too safe.
- 1:07:54DeFauldi and Smith are standing back there and they're looking at Kozar's eyes.
- 1:07:57They're reacting to that ball quickly.
- 1:07:59And they'd like to take him the head off of Mr. Webster's slaughter when he came on that crossing pattern.
- 1:08:03That's a tough pass to catch.
- 1:08:05Jeff Gossett, who had 21 points inside the 20-yard line, is back to kick for Cleveland.
- 1:08:10Gerald Willheit is standing at the Denver 10.
- 1:08:13Gossett kicks it straight up.
- 1:08:15It hangs up in the wind.
- 1:08:16Willheit will take it and a fair catch at the 11-yard line.
- 1:08:19So again, poor field position for the Denver Broncos.
- 1:08:23That time they used the wind.
- 1:08:25Yes they did.
- 1:08:26He planted the ball very, very high.
- 1:08:27The coverage was down there.
- 1:08:28As soon as they saw the fair catch signal, they went beyond him to stop it in case he let the ball bounce.
- 1:08:33He caught it on a 10-yard line.
- 1:08:34So Mr. Gossett, instead of having 21 now, has 22 inside the 20-yard line.
- 1:08:39That's a real test of a kicker to get that ball down inside the 20-yard line with no return.
- 1:08:44Denver moving left or right from the Broncos.
- 1:08:47They lead 10-7.
- 1:08:49Steve Watson is wide to the right.
- 1:08:51Mark Jackson is wide to the left.
- 1:08:54Winder is a lone setback.
- 1:08:55Orson Mobley, the tie-in is in motion.
- 1:08:57The handoff is standing.
- 1:08:58Winder running off left tackle and he's after the 13-yard line.
- 1:09:02Where Bob Golick, the veteran nose tackle from Notre Dame, brings him down.
- 1:09:06Golick is a native of Ohio.
- 1:09:07He's from Euclid, Ohio.
- 1:09:10Speaking of Ohio, Bronco linebacker Tom Jackson is from Cleveland.
- 1:09:14He played at John Adams High School here.
- 1:09:15And he said he used to come out and watch the Browns play.
- 1:09:17His daddy would bring him out to the stadium when he was 10 years old.
- 1:09:21Second down at 7 from the 13-yard line.
- 1:09:24Watson is wide right.
- 1:09:26Jackson, the rookie from Purdue, is wide to the left.
- 1:09:29Mobley on a wing right, goes in motion.
- 1:09:30Elway on a delay.
- 1:09:31Hansel Winder running to his left.
- 1:09:33And he's hit it to 19.
- 1:09:35It fights his way out to the 21-yard line.
- 1:09:37Ray Ellis is the man who made the tackle for the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:09:41If they were able to stop him without getting a first down,
- 1:09:43I think he's going to be awfully close to the first down.
- 1:09:45But if they're able to stop him without getting a first down,
- 1:09:48then they'll get the ball in probably their best field position.
- 1:09:50But it's going to be third down and very, very short.
- 1:09:52You almost have to expect a running play.
- 1:09:54But of course, with the arm of John Elway and his unpredictable,
- 1:09:58he is very unpredictable back there.
- 1:10:00You can never guess what he's going to do.
- 1:10:02But the sure thing to do, third down and one, is to run the ball.
- 1:10:05The Browns will go with a five-man front, five down linemen,
- 1:10:14third down one, full house backfield for Denver.
- 1:10:17Sewell is in motion out of the backfield.
- 1:10:19Elway on the handoff to Winder, and he's got the first down.
- 1:10:22Driving out to the 22-yard line where Chip Banks makes the stop.
- 1:10:25I love to watch Elway when he does his play selection.
- 1:10:31He has the ability to audible eyes on the line of scrimmage.
- 1:10:34And so many times he takes that chance.
- 1:10:36He's got just so much confidence.
- 1:10:38Both these quarterbacks have great confidence.
- 1:10:40But Elway's got that little bit more experience.
- 1:10:42He's a little bit more secure in his position.
- 1:10:44And he'll challenge the defense.
- 1:10:46Bernie Kosar, he's learning to do that also.
- 1:10:48Steve Watson and Mark Jacklin, good wide to the left.
- 1:10:51Two tight ends in the game now for the Broncos.
- 1:10:53First down at the 23-yard line.
- 1:10:55Elway on the pitch to Sandy Winder, running to his left.
- 1:10:57Trying to turn the corner, gives the man a stiff arm,
- 1:10:59and he's out of bounds near the 25.
- 1:11:02Clay Matthews and Chris Rockins chasing him out of bounds.
- 1:11:05Matthews had a shot at him just as he turned the corner,
- 1:11:08but he gave him a good stiff arm, managed to pick up a yard or so.
- 1:11:12Well, he ran the ball a long way.
- 1:11:14He must have run the ball 35 yards.
- 1:11:16Unfortunately for the Broncos, he was running left to right,
- 1:11:19so he was running just wide across the field.
- 1:11:21Never got to the corner.
- 1:11:23I don't think he made much over a yard.
- 1:11:25No, it's about a yard, it's that.
- 1:11:28I see he picked up anything.
- 1:11:31It's going to be second down at 10.
- 1:11:365.25 remaining in the second quarter.
- 1:11:38Denver leads 10-7, this AFC Championship game.
- 1:11:42Mark Jackson is wide left.
- 1:11:43Steve Watson is wide to the right.
- 1:11:46Mobley is on a wing left.
- 1:11:48A big tight end comes in motion.
- 1:11:50Elway's back to throw.
- 1:11:51He has time.
- 1:11:52Fires to Mobley at the 20.
- 1:11:54Tripped up at the 26-yard line.
- 1:11:56Good hard tackle by Ray Ellis coming up to meet him.
- 1:12:00What a tackle by Ray Ellis.
- 1:12:02He had to come up.
- 1:12:03He's taking Mobley, comes in motion.
- 1:12:05And as he comes across, they snap the ball.
- 1:12:07He kind of just filters out into the flat area.
- 1:12:09Elway looks him off.
- 1:12:10He's looking downfield, downfield.
- 1:12:11The last second he finds Mobley.
- 1:12:13Then it's a one-on-one tackle.
- 1:12:15Ellis comes up, makes that great stick.
- 1:12:17I don't know how Philadelphia ever gave up on him
- 1:12:19and let him come to Cleveland for literally nothing.
- 1:12:21They gave for him.
- 1:12:22One of five former Eagles in a Cleveland uniform.
- 1:12:25John Owens completed six of eight passes for 43 yards
- 1:12:28from the shotgun on third and five.
- 1:12:30Back he goes.
- 1:12:33Looks over the middle.
- 1:12:34Nothing there.
- 1:12:35Retreats.
- 1:12:36The Luke Reggie camp steps up.
- 1:12:37Guns are passed downfield.
- 1:12:38And it's dropped at the 45-yard line.
- 1:12:40Right through the hands of Mark Jackson.
- 1:12:43Frank Minfield, who's Menafield, is coming up from behind him.
- 1:12:46I'm sure you can hear him coming.
- 1:12:47That's probably why he dropped it.
- 1:12:48Yes, and it was a high pass.
- 1:12:50When you're a wide receiver and you run that 16, 17-yard curl
- 1:12:53pattern, the one thing you don't want to do is have that ball
- 1:12:56thrown high.
- 1:12:57Because if it's thrown high, you know that defensive back is going
- 1:13:00to come up and smash you.
- 1:13:01And you're stretched out there.
- 1:13:02You're much more vulnerable to the hit.
- 1:13:04You want it low, right into the belly where you don't have to
- 1:13:06jump up.
- 1:13:07Mike Horan is in the kick for the Denver Broncos.
- 1:13:10Gerald McNeil, a return to punt, 84 yards for a touchdown against
- 1:13:13Detroit, is standing back at the Cleveland 29.
- 1:13:16Four and a half remaining in the second quarter.
- 1:13:18Denver with a 10-7 lead.
- 1:13:20Horan feels the snap, gets the kick away.
- 1:13:23A wobbly spiral headed toward the far sideline, taken by McNeil
- 1:13:26at the 40, running to his right to the 45, and dragged down near
- 1:13:29midfield at the 48-yard line of Denver.
- 1:13:32And again, excellent field position for the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:13:36I saw a referee take a flag out of his hand and wave it in one of
- 1:13:39the Denver Broncos' faces.
- 1:13:41Maybe that's a warning.
- 1:13:42I don't know.
- 1:13:43He didn't throw the flag.
- 1:13:44He just kind of waved it in his face, and then he just kind of
- 1:13:47kept it in his hand.
- 1:13:49Now they're talking about it.
- 1:13:52Well, what do you have to say, Chuck?
- 1:13:54What happened down there?
- 1:13:55Here's Chuck Eberlein.
- 1:13:57Invalid fair catch signal by the receivers, five yards from the
- 1:14:01spot, first down.
- 1:14:03Invalid fair catch signal by Gerald McNeil.
- 1:14:05Well, I saw that, and I wondered whether that was a fair catch.
- 1:14:08It's the first thing I saw.
- 1:14:09He kind of put his hand up and quickly brought it down.
- 1:14:11Now, the fair catch signal, you have to put your hand up, and you
- 1:14:14have to wave left to right several times to indicate it.
- 1:14:17He just kind of put his hand up.
- 1:14:18It looked as if he was going to signal and then decided not to.
- 1:14:21The referee saw that and called a five-yard penalty.
- 1:14:25So instead of having the ball at the Bronco 48, Cleveland will
- 1:14:28begin this drive from their own 35.
- 1:14:30It'll be first and 10 for the Browns.
- 1:14:32Denver leads 10 to 7.
- 1:14:34Webster Slaughter is wide to the left.
- 1:14:36Reggie Langhorn is wide to the right.
- 1:14:41Bernie Kozar will throw on first down.
- 1:14:44He fires underneath to Herman Fontenot.
- 1:14:46He makes the catch at the 27-yard line, gets back up.
- 1:14:49Now, they call this an incompletion.
- 1:14:51Well, he made the catch, but there's a penalty marker down.
- 1:14:54That penalty flag was thrown way far away from the play.
- 1:14:57It was thrown way downfield.
- 1:14:59It looked as if it was thrown against Mike Harden, who was at
- 1:15:01the Broncos, and I couldn't see exactly who was down there with
- 1:15:04him, but it was thrown probably 20 yards from where the pass was
- 1:15:06thrown.
- 1:15:09There is no foul on the play.
- 1:15:11The ball was tipped by the defense.
- 1:15:14Second down.
- 1:15:15No foul on the play because the ball was tipped by the defense.
- 1:15:17Yes, once the ball is tipped by a defensive player, you can't have
- 1:15:20pass interference.
- 1:15:21That's what the play was called.
- 1:15:25Interesting call.
- 1:15:26We've had a lot of interesting calls today so far in this game.
- 1:15:28Pass was incomplete, so it'll be second down and 10.
- 1:15:33Brian Brennan is in the game now.
- 1:15:35He puts out wide to the right.
- 1:15:36Fontenot and Webster Slaughter wide to the left.
- 1:15:39Kevin Mack is the lone setback.
- 1:15:45Bernie Kozar takes the snap, hands to Mack, lowers his head,
- 1:15:48drives straight ahead, and he runs into Jim Ryan, who's back in
- 1:15:50the game for the Broncos, and he brings him down to 38-yard line.
- 1:15:53Ryan, along with Dennis Smith on the stop.
- 1:15:56It's beginning to snow once again.
- 1:15:58It's almost like there's someone upstairs with a switch that
- 1:16:00decides, okay, it's time for some more snow.
- 1:16:02Then they shut it off for a while.
- 1:16:04Well, if you're in Cleveland, the guy doesn't live in Cleveland if
- 1:16:06he's controlling the snow because when Cleveland's on offense,
- 1:16:09you don't want the snow.
- 1:16:14Chuck Heberling is making an announcement, but we can't hear it.
- 1:16:17Apparently having some problems with his microphone.
- 1:16:19Well, I think they may be having some problems with the clock.
- 1:16:22So it's third and seven for Cleveland from the Brown 38-yard line,
- 1:16:263.39 left in the first half.
- 1:16:28Kozar drops back inside the 30.
- 1:16:30He's firing long downfield for Clarence Weathers.
- 1:16:33He's got him to 30, 25, and down to the 20-yard line.
- 1:16:37He's the big play man for the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:16:40Last year he averaged 28 yards a cat, tops in the NFL.
- 1:16:44He doesn't catch many, but when he does, they're normally for
- 1:16:47big games and that's a 42-yard pick up.
- 1:16:50Now I wish our fans could have seen the hesitancy that he had,
- 1:16:53that Kozar had on that play.
- 1:16:55He saw Weathers come off the line of scrimmage.
- 1:16:57The last second he brought the ball back down.
- 1:16:59He decided he was going to throw it, then he brought it back down.
- 1:17:01Then all of a sudden he saw Weathers break free, and the ball
- 1:17:04was thrown with just a beautiful touch.
- 1:17:06The ball was laid right into Weathers' outstretched hand.
- 1:17:09He got behind Dennis Smith on the play.
- 1:17:11First down for Cleveland at the Denver 20.
- 1:17:14Fontenot and Mack are split at the backfield behind Bernie Kozar.
- 1:17:18Kozar will throw again, swings it out of the backfield on the left side
- 1:17:21to Fontenot with a blocker ahead of him across the 20.
- 1:17:23Heading for the near sidelines, and he's driven out of bounds
- 1:17:26at the 16-yard line.
- 1:17:28Mike Harden knocked him out of bounds.
- 1:17:30Herman Fontenot, to your veteran from LSU, who was signed as a
- 1:17:34free agent on the recommendation of LSU coach Bill Arnsperger
- 1:17:38and Kurt Schottenheimer, who's Cleveland coach Marty Schottenheimer's
- 1:17:41younger brother.
- 1:17:42At that time he was an assistant in LSU.
- 1:17:44He's now at Notre Dame.
- 1:17:45Well, I tell you, I am impressed with Bernie Kozar.
- 1:17:47He's been rattled.
- 1:17:48He's done two interceptions, and he takes a chance on that pass.
- 1:17:51He's got ice water in his veins today.
- 1:17:53He's growing with a lot of confidence.
- 1:17:55He's a gutsy big play quarterback.
- 1:17:59Second down and five from the 15-yard line.
- 1:18:02Kozar with a short drop, looks right, fires, and it's caught by Fontenot.
- 1:18:06Tries to break a tackle, and he's dropped at the seven-yard line.
- 1:18:09It'll be first and goal to go for the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:18:12Dennis Smith made the tackle on him.
- 1:18:17Now these fans are coming alive here.
- 1:18:19I can feel this booth shaking.
- 1:18:21This is quite an old stadium, and this booth is shaking.
- 1:18:262-0-9 remaining in the first half.
- 1:18:28Denver leads 10-7, but the Browns are threatening again.
- 1:18:31Fontenot's got an outstanding first half.
- 1:18:33Five receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.
- 1:18:35And now we've got the two-minute warning.
- 1:18:37So that's the two-minute warning, but there'll be no warning when the lights go out.
- 1:18:40Keep an Ever-Ready flashlight close at hand.
- 1:18:45More power to look. More power to say. More power to play. More power to sing and drink.
- 1:18:55We sing today. Ever-Ready. More power to the USA.
- 1:19:03Ever-Ready makes every kind of flashlight for every kind of need.
- 1:19:06More power to the USA.
- 1:19:13It's best for all that you do.
- 1:19:18Somehow you always come through.
- 1:19:23You make it go now. You got the know-how.
- 1:19:28You're the fire king, darling, you.
- 1:19:33You really make it work. It's not for you.
- 1:19:37In has a good. Thank you all for being here.
- 1:19:40Mel Proctor with Dave Rowe back in Cleveland.
- 1:19:43Stay tuned for the Halftime Show with Stan Martin, and you'll have a chance to win a fine gift for your home, furnished by Samsung, makers of affordable home electronics.
- 1:19:50All that will take is a phone call, and you could be the winner.
- 1:19:53First and goal to go for the Cleveland Browns at the seven-yard line, moving right to left.
- 1:19:59Bernie Kozar mixing his plays nicely in his first half, although he was intercepted twice, forced a couple of passes.
- 1:20:06But aside from that, it's been a very good play call.
- 1:20:09Well, they're, they've capitalized on his ability to throw that ball. He threw that ball just fantastically to Clarence Weathers.
- 1:20:15That was a very impressive throw. Now they're down on the seven-yard line.
- 1:20:18The one thing they don't want to do in this situation is have to settle for a field goal. That's the last thing they want to do.
- 1:20:23This is the end zone where Mark Mosley missed that big field goal last week and almost blew the playoff.
- 1:20:30First and goal to go for the Cleveland Browns, moving right to left at the Denver Seven.
- 1:20:38Bernie Kozar, who's right to require the Buffalo Bills for four draft picks.
- 1:20:43They're up watching the Browns play. Ryan Seyff was one of his heroes, former Brown quarterback.
- 1:20:48Kozar waiting the snap from Mike Bab.
- 1:20:51On first and goal to go at the seven-yard line, Mack is the lone setback.
- 1:20:55Reggie Langhorn is in motion. The handoff to Mack, running to his right.
- 1:20:58And he's stopped by three Broncos at the seven-yard line. The ball popped loose, but the play had been blown dead.
- 1:21:04Ken Woodard was the first Bronco to get to him.
- 1:21:07Now what you have to do in this situation, you have to fool the defense.
- 1:21:11The defense is secondary, doesn't have to drop very deep because they're in the end zone.
- 1:21:15So their drops are going to be short.
- 1:21:17So what you've got to do is you've got to fool them with a pass pattern.
- 1:21:20He'll pick play in basketball, even though you can't pick in football.
- 1:21:23You have to do some type of a crossing pattern where you get somebody free.
- 1:21:26Or you have to do the quick plant in the middle where you just bust somebody up in there before the defense can make their adjustments on the rush.
- 1:21:33Ernest Beiner and Webster Slaughter's foot wide to the left.
- 1:21:35Clarence Weathers is back in. He's put out to the right side.
- 1:21:38Kozar on the handoff to Mack straight ahead, driving inside the five down at the two-yard line.
- 1:21:44Gretchen Gilbert made the tackle for the Denver Broncos, but it looked like Denver was anticipating a pass and said they've got to run.
- 1:21:50Absolutely. That's how you fool them. Everybody was thinking pass in that situation.
- 1:21:53He runs back, hands the ball on a late draw, and he just runs up the middle.
- 1:21:57That's what I mean when I say you have to fool them. And the clock is ticking down.
- 1:22:00Cleveland wants to have no time on the clock when they get this ball if they score.
- 1:22:05Forty-five seconds left in the half. Two tight ends in the game now for Cleveland.
- 1:22:10Travis Tucker and Harry Holt, a third and goal to go from the two-yard line.
- 1:22:15Beiner and Mack are the running backs.
- 1:22:18Play action fake by Kozar, running to his right, being chased by Jim Ryan, throws on the run and throws it down the turf at the one-yard line.
- 1:22:26The Broncos are screaming intentional grounding, but I don't see a flag.
- 1:22:32Well, I don't know. I thought I saw a flag on the sideline, but it may be a piece of paper.
- 1:22:36But intentional grounding is called against Bernie Kozar, and he's furious.
- 1:22:40As he runs up to the referee, Chuck Heverling begins to protest.
- 1:22:44Well, he had someone in the end zone, and that's what he's yelling at.
- 1:22:47He had someone in the end zone. He was running to his right. He took the ball.
- 1:22:50And when he threw it, it looked like he just threw it into the ground.
- 1:22:53But he had someone in the end zone. He didn't throw it far.
- 1:22:59He was being chased by Simon Pletcher instead of throwing the ball clear out of the end zone.
- 1:23:03For some reason, he threw it down at about the two.
- 1:23:06That's the point. If he had taken the ball and thrown it out of the back of the end zone, it would never have been the intentional grounding.
- 1:23:13But that really hurts Bernie Kozar. That's something that he's going to learn.
- 1:23:17When you're in that situation, you throw the ball out of the back of the end zone. You don't throw it in the dirt.
- 1:23:21Mark Mosley is in to attempt a 30-yard field goal.
- 1:23:26He was 4-for-5 from this range during the regular season.
- 1:23:31Mosley will kick the game winner last week and double overtime to give the Browns a victory.
- 1:23:35While it's spotted down, Mosley's kick is on the way, and it is good.
- 1:23:39And Mark Mosley connects from 30 yards out to tie the score at 10.
- 1:23:43And with 20 seconds left in the first half, it's now Cleveland 10 and Denver 10.
- 1:23:48A field goal try? An awful choice. You want to boo, but you lost your voice. Throat's get fixed with Vicks.
- 1:23:55A sore throat needs real relief that's really delicious. A Vicks throat drop.
- 1:24:00It melts into a refreshing syrup that coats and soothes dry, irritated throats.
- 1:24:04Vicks throat drops, medicated, so use only as directed.
- 1:24:07You've smoked too much. Your throat is broiling. It seems to you your pipes need oiling. Throat's get fixed with Vicks.
- 1:24:14Throat drops from Vicks, of course.
- 1:24:19Mark Mosley's field goal is tied to score at 10 with 20 seconds remaining in the first half.
- 1:24:24It's been quite a story for Mosley, who was selected the most valuable player in the NFL in 1982, the only kicker to be so honored.
- 1:24:30Released earlier this year by the Washington Redskins, picked up by the Browns.
- 1:24:34And he was the hero last week. He wore the goats horn for a while, though, after missing the field goal in the first overtime.
- 1:24:39He would have won the game for Cleveland.
- 1:24:41And I think he would like nothing better than to kick against the Washington Redskins this year.
- 1:24:45And you know what that would mean? That would mean that they'd have to meet the Redskins in the Super Bowl.
- 1:24:49That'd be quite a tribute to him and his long career.
- 1:24:51Mosley said that he's had some phone conversations with the longtime Browns kicker Don Cockroft, who was here for 12 years.
- 1:24:57He's a great kicker, but Cockroft told him, they only remember the kicks you miss.
- 1:25:01Cockroft, in 1980, missed two field goals and an extra point in the game.
- 1:25:04And he's more remembered for that and for the great kick he had in his career.
- 1:25:07Absolutely. That was against the Raiders when they threw the last drive.
- 1:25:10They had no confidence in them, and San Martino Decided to throw the ball.
- 1:25:13Brian Slive, of course, threw the incomplete for the interception in the end zone, and the Raiders went on to the Super Bowl.
- 1:25:19Ken Bell and Gene Lang are back deep for the Denver Broncos awaiting Mark Mosley's kickoff.
- 1:25:25Bell, a rookie from Boston College on the near side, laying the veteran on the far side.
- 1:25:30At 10, 10 time, this one is really heating up on a chilly afternoon in Cleveland.
- 1:25:34Mosley's kick is a swift kick, rolling across the 40 fielded by one of the Bronco linemen, and he's tackled at the 41 yard line.
- 1:25:41That was Mike Freeman, a guard, picking up the ball.
- 1:25:45And Denver will have the ball with 16 seconds left.
- 1:25:48Let's pause five seconds for station identification.
- 1:25:5131 degrees and 104 on 67 WMAQ Radio, Chicago.
- 1:25:58What do you do now after John Elway?
- 1:26:00Well, hey, I don't think they should have done what they did right there.
- 1:26:03They've got the, Denver's got the ball, and they're on 41 yard line.
- 1:26:07If they get about 20 yards on a quick pass, they've got 16 seconds, they've got enough time out, they may get Carlos in field goal range.
- 1:26:14Three wide receivers to the left side, Jackson, Johnson, and Watson for Denver.
- 1:26:18Elway back to throw, with time stepping up in the pocket, guns it underneath to Clint Sampson, heading for the far sidelines, and he's out of bounds near midfield with 10 seconds left.
- 1:26:27The Broncos have two timeouts remaining.
- 1:26:30That time, Elway sent three wide receivers deep, brought Sampson across the field underneath, and he was wide open.
- 1:26:37Now they have 10 seconds, so they have time to run a pass.
- 1:26:40All they have to do is run some type of a pass where he can go down and call a quick timeout.
- 1:26:45Now if you're Cleveland and he goes down and runs that curl, you might just not tackle him.
- 1:26:49Let him get up, don't let him call timeout.
- 1:26:53Rich Carlos has kicked a 51 yard field goal this year.
- 1:26:56The way the wind is swirling and blowing today would be very difficult on a day like this.
- 1:27:00Billy Bryant just called in and said, hey, we've got a dirty ball here, I want to change this.
- 1:27:04So they're going to run a clean ball in from the sidelines.
- 1:27:07Brian, the Broncos center, a 10-year veteran from Duke.
- 1:27:12Elway from the shotgun, 10 seconds left in the first half, a 10-10 tie.
- 1:27:21Back goes Elway, again with time, fires over the middle and it's incomplete at the 40-yard line.
- 1:27:27Elway trying to hit Vance Johnson, but well covered by the Browns.
- 1:27:33Now that compounds his problems because now he only has five seconds left now, he's almost have to throw the ball deep.
- 1:27:38Either deep or a quick out pattern to pick up about eight to ten yards,
- 1:27:42but there's just not enough time to throw a pass, complete it and get the clock stopped in five seconds.
- 1:27:50Second down and ten from the Cleveland 49-yard line.
- 1:27:56Steve Watson goes wide to the left, Mark Jackson is wide to the right, Vance Johnson in the flat left and Elway from the shotgun.
- 1:28:03He drops back, firing toward the far sideline and throws it out of bounds.
- 1:28:07Gerald Wilhite was the intended receiver, but that will bring the first half to an end.
- 1:28:12The end of the first half before a sellout round of over 80,000 here at Cleveland Stadium.
- 1:28:16The Broncos and the Browns are tied 10-10 in this AFC championship game.
- 1:28:23This is Bob Golick of the Cleveland Browns with a special message for everyone in our radio audience.
- 1:28:28Today we're at Health Hill Hospital in Cleveland.
- 1:28:30Health Hill is a unique United Way-supported pediatric specialty hospital serving the children of Cleveland.
- 1:28:36Bobby was referred to Health Hill for control of his acute asthma attacks.
- 1:28:40He participates in a unique outdoor program which is generally unavailable to children with asthma.
- 1:28:45As time goes by, success builds on success.
- 1:28:48Barriers to better health are steadily overcome.
- 1:28:51And hard-won feelings of achievement begin to show.
- 1:28:54Because of the love, the caring, and the determination to succeed, people like Bobby are winning.
- 1:29:00Winning their fight overcomes their problems.
- 1:29:03That's why Bobby can say thanks.
- 1:29:06Because thanks to you it works for all of us, the United Way.
- 1:29:10This message furnished by the National Football League.
- 1:29:21This is Sam Martin back in our NBC studios in New York.
- 1:29:24We are at halftime of the AFC championship game with the score tied.
- 1:29:28The Denver Broncos 10, the Cleveland Browns 10, and what has been certainly an interesting first half.
- 1:29:34There were three turnovers in the first half, all done by Cleveland.
- 1:29:38Denver was only able to take care or take advantage of two of them and we'll have a quick review.
- 1:29:43To begin with, Cleveland marched 86 yards in the first scoring drive of the game.
- 1:29:47Bernie Kozar hooking up with Herman Fontenot on the 14th play of this drive.
- 1:29:52Back goes Kozar, flings it out of the backfield to Fontenot, breaks the tackle, and he is in for a touchdown!
- 1:29:58The PAT was good. That put the Browns up 7-0, and that was the score after one period of play.
- 1:30:03Denver, as we told you, took advantage of a couple of turnovers by the Cleveland Browns to begin with.
- 1:30:08The Broncos intercepted Bernie Kozar but didn't cash in on that one.
- 1:30:12They intercepted him a second time, drove deep into Brown territory.
- 1:30:16Rich Carless kicked a 19-yard field goal. That made it Cleveland 7 and Denver 3.
- 1:30:20And then, a big fumble on the ensuing possession by Cleveland.
- 1:30:23Denver recovered, drove deep again, and this time took full advantage.
- 1:30:27Fourth down, goal to goal from the 1. It's a big crowd of over 80,000.
- 1:30:33Reacts to John Elway. Sewell is in motion.
- 1:30:37Elway takes the snap on the pitch to Wilhite, running right, dives into the end zone for a touchdown.
- 1:30:43And that one put Denver up ahead 10-7 at that point.
- 1:30:46And right after on the ensuing kickoff, Cleveland got only its second offensive good drive of the first half underway,
- 1:30:52drove deep into Denver territory.
- 1:30:54Mark Mosley wound up by kicking a 29-yard field goal, and that's where we are at halftime with the score tied 10-10.
- 1:31:01We'll kick it off to get the second half underway.
- 1:31:05The Browns moving left to right. Cleveland wearing the white home uniforms with orange and brown trim.
- 1:31:10The Broncos in the orange jersey, white pants, blue helmets, blue and white trim.
- 1:31:14Gene Lang and Ken Bell are back deep, awaiting Mosley's kickoff.
- 1:31:19Lang on the near side, Bell on the far side. The second half is underway from Cleveland Stadium.
- 1:31:25A high short kick, fumbled by Bell with the 10. He picks it up and he smothers there at the 8-yard line.
- 1:31:31D.D. Hoggard was all over him, and he gets up, pumping his arms, gesturing to the dog pound,
- 1:31:37and they're howling and barking in that end of the end zone.
- 1:31:39Oh, what a coverage. When he follows that ball, he barely has time to pick up that ball before Hoggard is right on top of him.
- 1:31:46That was amazing how quickly he got down the field.
- 1:31:50That was really surprising. I couldn't believe that he barely picked up the ball, turned around, and wham!
- 1:31:54There he was, and he was smothered on the 8-yard line.
- 1:31:58Denver has been flagged by a four-field position all afternoon. They'll begin this ride from the 8.
- 1:32:03Gerald Willehyde in the backfield for Denver, along with Gene Lang on the delay.
- 1:32:09The handoff is to Lang, who's hit and drop at the 9-yard line by Eddie Johnson.
- 1:32:14Right now, if you're a Cleveland Browns fan, you want the Cleveland defense to hold him down there.
- 1:32:20You know he's putting into a pretty good wind. He's not going to get a lot of distance.
- 1:32:23They'll have great field positions if they can hold them in this down situation here.
- 1:32:27Second down, about 8 yards to go, and they're on their own 10-yard line.
- 1:32:31Orson-Mobly to 6'5", 256-pound tight end checks in, replacing Willehyde.
- 1:32:36Second down, an 8 from the 10. Sammy Winder's not in there. Gene Lang is at running back.
- 1:32:43Vance Johnson is wide to the left. He goes in motion.
- 1:32:46John Elway drops back inside his 5-yard line. Fires over the middle, and wide open is Vance Johnson.
- 1:32:52He's got it to 15 across the 20, heading for the near sideline, and he's out of bounds at the 24-yard line.
- 1:32:58They stop by Scott Nicholas of Cleveland. That's a first down for the Broncos.
- 1:33:03What a great call by Elway to find him coming across the field.
- 1:33:07Vance Johnson is all the way on the right side of the field. He comes down about 5 to 7 yards,
- 1:33:11and then starts across the field, and he loses his coverage. The other coverage goes deep.
- 1:33:15He loses his coverage. He's running straight across the field. Elway picks him up for a big first down.
- 1:33:19Vance Johnson has spent 5 weeks on injured reserve with a knee injury.
- 1:33:23Back in action, he had a 48-yard touchdown reception last week's playoff game against New England.
- 1:33:28First out for Denver at the 24. The handoff goes to Sammy Winder, who's back in there.
- 1:33:32He drives off right tackle for a couple of yards.
- 1:33:35And again, it's Eddie Johnson, a 6-year veteran from Louisville, making the snap.
- 1:33:40Now, I was watching a play away from it a little bit.
- 1:33:43Mark Seuss, Steve Watson, just got leveled by the defensive corner.
- 1:33:47When he saw his run, he just leveled Steve Watson.
- 1:33:49Watson got up, taking grass out of his face mask, and went over and talked to the referees,
- 1:33:53and said, hey, I don't go for this. I'm a wide receiver.
- 1:33:55Two great cornerbacks, Frank Minifield and Hanford Dixon, like to play bump and run.
- 1:33:59They're outstanding in one-on-one coverage. Back goes Elway on second and sixth.
- 1:34:03Steps up and guns it long for Watson, and he's got a flag thrown.
- 1:34:07As Watson collided with Frank Minifield, who had him on one-on-one coverage.
- 1:34:11And that's the thing that Watson did. He set that up with the last play.
- 1:34:16If it, in fact, is against Frank Minifield, he set it up by going to the referee and said,
- 1:34:20listen, he stuck me in the face, and they are going to call it against Frank Minifield.
- 1:34:24It's going to be against Watson or on Watson against Minifield.
- 1:34:29Looks like it's against the defense, against Minifield.
- 1:34:33What a play. I watched Watson that play before, and he got leveled, and he went over and told the referee about it,
- 1:34:38and so they come right back, Elway throws the ball.
- 1:34:41He's there. Number 31.
- 1:34:43That's an insurance against Frank Minifield.
- 1:34:48That is something that Watson does so well. You know, one year he had 300 and some yards against him
- 1:34:53in interference penalties that he drew on his defenders.
- 1:34:57First down for the Broncos, the Denver 45-yard line.
- 1:35:01Watson slips out wide to the left, and wide to the right is Vance Johnson.
- 1:35:09Wilson Mobley is in tight-ended motion to hand off to Sammy Winder.
- 1:35:13Hips stays on his feet, and it's stopped at the 46th, the gain of the yards.
- 1:35:17Mike Johnson made the stop.
- 1:35:21Johnson in his second year from Virginia Tech, right on the USFL with the Philadelphia Baltimore Stars.
- 1:35:28Well, the continuing scoring out there at corner, that time Minifield, the Cleveland defensive back,
- 1:35:33hits Watson in the face about three times. Watson goes back over and talks to the referee.
- 1:35:37Yeah. I wonder if Elway could possibly come back. No, Watson's going to come over here on this side of the field.
- 1:35:42Get away from Minifield.
- 1:35:43No better there with Hanford Dixon covering him.
- 1:35:45Right.
- 1:35:46Minifield is against Vance Johnson on the far side.
- 1:35:49Second and ninth in the 45, Elway with a deep drop being pressured, giving ground,
- 1:35:54closes these hits, and sails it out of bounds into the block, goes Vance, and he got caught by Mike Johnson.
- 1:36:00You hear the fans react here. They watch pass. They watch him grounding the ball.
- 1:36:04Look at this.
- 1:36:05Orson Mobley and Clay Matthews. Mobley ran up behind Matthews and bumped him,
- 1:36:09and Matthews turned around and waved his hand as if to say, nanananana.
- 1:36:14The only way to describe it on the radio.
- 1:36:16That's exactly what it was.
- 1:36:18He's got to wave his hand, just got to wave it right in his face.
- 1:36:21It looked like he was saying, eh, eh, eh, eh.
- 1:36:24What's this, a replay, a radio replay?
- 1:36:25Radio instant replay, right.
- 1:36:29Third down, ninth for Denver from the bus, 046, and a crowd of over 80,000 is howling.
- 1:36:37Elway from the shotgun.
- 1:36:39He's watching his emotions.
- 1:36:41Elway backpedal sets up. Look, now dancing, running to his right, and he is shot at the 35 by Sam Tracy.
- 1:36:52Elway had no way to go, and what do they do? They run down to the end zone, get the dog pound into it.
- 1:36:58Boy, they're throwing those bones out there. They got bone smell all the way out to about the 15 yard line.
- 1:37:03Clearly is incredible.
- 1:37:05People wearing dog masks, their faces tainted up like dogs that get dog ears.
- 1:37:09They said last week when they kicked that field goal that they literally had to get rakes out there and rake the field to get those dog bones off,
- 1:37:16and I believe it, there are literally thousands of them down there.
- 1:37:19On 4th and 20th, the 35, Mike Horan is in the punt.
- 1:37:22Gerald McNeil pumping his legs, trying to get warm as he stands at the Cleveland 20.
- 1:37:27He's had a big day. Good kick by Horan.
- 1:37:29Low driving spiral, but that's the kind that'll run back, and it hits along the far sideline and goes out of bounds near the 20.
- 1:37:35Mike McNeil wanted to steal that one, but he couldn't get to it in time. A 44 yard kick.
- 1:37:42That was a driving kick, and that ball came off his foot. It was not very high, but it drove it deep and out of bounds.
- 1:37:48So with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Broncos and the Browns are tied 10-10 at this AFC Championship game.
- 1:37:55Hands, the working hands of Mr. Goodwin, hands with the know-how to fix General Motors cars, hands that are strong and sure, gentle and natural,
- 1:38:08hands that can almost see where trouble is and how to make it right again, hands of skill and experience, hands that care,
- 1:38:17the hands of Mr. Goodwin, and no one knows you GM car better. No one.

- 1:38:51News is directed.
- 1:38:54Mel Proctor with Dave Rowe back at Cleveland Stadium, and this town has fallen in love with the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:38:59They're hungry for a winner in this city, and things are improving.
- 1:39:02The Cleveland Indians could be a challenger in the American League East this year.
- 1:39:05The Cleveland Cavaliers are a good young team, although they still are in last place, and the Browns have just absolutely captivated this town.
- 1:39:11They haven't. It's been a long time since 1964 that they've had a playoff championship game here.
- 1:39:16Those are the old days of Jimmy Brown, Otto Graham, those types of players, so they've had a long drive still.
- 1:39:23Waverly's ball first down at the 21-yard line, a 10-10 tie with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:39:33The Browns have Ricky Bolden, Cody Reiss at the tackle, Paul Byrne, and Dan Fiker, the guards, and Mike Fab, who is not wearing an undershirt.
- 1:39:40He's got those bare arms sticking out. His idols are Tarzan and Conan. He says he admires Conan because he's big, strong, and honorable.
- 1:39:47He never hurts a woman, and he's not afraid of anything. And apparently, Mike Bab is not afraid of cold weather.
- 1:39:53It reminds me a lot of Mickey Webster. Mike Webster is a great center for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:39:58They used to play against him, and he'd go out there and be freezing, and he'd have those big arms, and he'd be bare there, and you'd look at him and just be bright red, and that's what Mike Bab's arms are.
- 1:40:05They're just bright red today.
- 1:40:08He appears to be the only player on either team that's not wearing some sort of undershirt.
- 1:40:12Well, you know, there was a lot of discussion this week about taking the Cleveland Browns went down to Florida to practice.
- 1:40:17And Marty Schottenheimer, coach, said, listen, I don't want to have the distraction of the players trying to keep warm during practice.
- 1:40:23I want them to practice and enjoy practice, and they have enjoyed practice. They had a good week of practice.
- 1:40:29Well, that operates for the rest of this game.
- 1:40:32Certainly the field judge will keep the 30 seconds on the field.
- 1:40:36Thirty-second clock is not operating for Chuck Eberlein.
- 1:40:39Now, that could be an important thing, Mel, because the 30-second clock is set in the end zone so that quarterback can see it and he can time his plays.
- 1:40:47Here come the Browns, moving left or right in the 21-yard line.
- 1:40:50Herman Fondnow and Brian Brennan are wide to the right. Webster Slaughter is wide to the left. Kevin Mack is a lone setback.
- 1:40:56Bernie Kozler on the handoff to Mack, starts up the middle, bounces to the outside, racing to the near sideline across the 25-30, and knocks out a bound at the 32-yard line by Lewis Wright.
- 1:41:06Herman Fondnow to a great block for Mack, a 13-yard pick-up and a first down.
- 1:41:11Well, third is Brian Brennan. He's the wide receiver on that plane. He has to hook the cornerback.
- 1:41:17Now, he doesn't throw a big block because he's not a big person, but he kind of throws a nagging block around the legs and the ankles.
- 1:41:22The cornerback couldn't get free, and he just, in the running back, Brian, excuse me, Mack, Kevin Mack just went around the outside.
- 1:41:28Good block by Brian Brennan.
- 1:41:30Reggie Langhorn is wide to the right. Webster Slaughter is split to the left. Fondnow and Mack are the running backs, split behind Bernie Kozler.
- 1:41:37Fondnow is in motion out of the backfield. Kozler will play action, looks to his right, guns to pass to Fondnow, and he's knocked out a bound near the 40.
- 1:41:46Trying to elude Lewis Wright, and then was driven out of bounds by Dennis Smith, a throwball free safety for the Broncos, and missed last week's game against New England with a knee injury.
- 1:41:56Randy Robbins started in place of him.
- 1:41:58I'll tell you, Fondnow, coming out of that backfield, has as good a hand as any running back you'll see coming out of the backfield.
- 1:42:04He is just making X-file around her.
- 1:42:06High, low, doesn't make any difference. He's got very good hands.
- 1:42:09He was the wide receiver at LSU.
- 1:42:12Second down and five from the Cleveland 39.
- 1:42:17Kozler on the handoff to Kevin Mack, planning off the left side across the 40 and after the 42 yard line, close to a first down.
- 1:42:25Carl Mecklenburg and Roulon Jones made the tackle. Mecklenburg is known as the albino rhino.
- 1:42:31Boy, he is quite a player.
- 1:42:33When Mecklenburg came in, he really is the one that you have got to control on the defense. He does so many different things. He lines up all across the field.
- 1:42:41He's got 130 tackles, so he's the number two tackler on the Denver Broncos team.
- 1:42:45Nine and a half sacks and he's a linebacker, defensive end lineman, whatever you want to call him, he plays that position.
- 1:42:51Third and one. High formation.
- 1:42:54Biner has joined Kevin Mack in the Cleveland backfield.
- 1:42:56Erdest Biner is the lead back. The handoff to Mack and he is hit, but breaks the tackle, fights forward, and it's going to be very close.
- 1:43:03He broke out of the tackle of Tom Jackson, who had him stop for a loss.
- 1:43:08Tom Jackson just slid through the line and met Kevin Mack and it's so surprising, Kevin Mack, he didn't even have time to get his weight going forward.
- 1:43:15He caught him, he just guessed that he was going to do it. He guessed that the ball was going to be handed to him.
- 1:43:19He slightly slipped through the line and just smacked Kevin Mack and made him come up about a yard short.
- 1:43:23So a loss of the yard and Jeff Gossett is in the front. At fourth and two from the 42, Gerald Wilhite stands for the Denver 15.
- 1:43:31Gossett drives his foot into it, a high driving spiral.
- 1:43:34Wilhite will let it hit, it will roll inside the 10 and enter the end zone for a touchback.
- 1:43:39That was a kick. The wind must have been blowing that way because that was about an almost a 57-yard kick.
- 1:43:45Wow, what a kick. Really difficult to judge the wind. It swirls, it changes direction.
- 1:43:52And now we've got a timeout with 10.20 remaining in the third quarter. The Broncos-Nebrows tie 10.10.
- 1:43:58More great news from Sears. A ratchet is only as good as its warranty.
- 1:44:04This one is part of a 53-piece Craftsman mechanics tool set that's warranted forever.
- 1:44:08And the great news from Sears is that right now all 53 pieces, including 3 eighths and quarter inch drives,
- 1:44:14and metric and standard sockets are just $39.99. So hurry, our warranty lasts forever.
- 1:44:19But at this price, quantities won't.
- 1:44:21There's more for your life.
- 1:44:23More great news.
- 1:44:24At Sears.
- 1:44:25Sears store for warranty details.
- 1:44:28The Broncos-Nebrows are meeting for the first time ever in postseason play and they're tied 10.10.
- 1:44:33This is the NFL on NBC.
- 1:44:35Now I'm a believer, not a play, no doubt in my mind.

- 1:45:18He's ready to make you a believer.
- 1:45:21Now I'm a believer, I'm a believer, I'm a believer, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm a believer.
- 1:45:35Mel Proctor with Dave Roe back in Cleveland at 10.10 tie.
- 1:45:3820 has kind of been a magic number for the Broncos this year.
- 1:45:41They're 12-0 when they scored 20 or more points.
- 1:45:43They're 0-5 when they scored less than 20.
- 1:45:46And the Broncos begin this drive from their own 20-yard line.
- 1:45:52John Elway on first down, Hanson Stanley Winder running to his right, looking for blocking,
- 1:45:56turns the corner, crossed the 20 and upended at the 25-yard line by strong safety Ray Ellis.
- 1:46:03Stanley Winder, who's led the Broncos in rushing every year since 1982.
- 1:46:09He was a fifth-round pick in the 1982 season.
- 1:46:13Picked up 70 yards on first down to make it second and three at the 27.
- 1:46:20Winder had a big game last week against the Patriots, carried 19 times for 102 yards.
- 1:46:25Steve Watson is wide to the left.
- 1:46:27Lance Johnson is wide to the right.
- 1:46:30Back goes Elway, shutting up inside the 20.
- 1:46:33Fires left and it's off the hands of tight end Orson Mobley at the 31 and a late flag is thrown.
- 1:46:40Ray Ellis was back in coverage for the Cleveland Browns, half thrown a little behind Mobley,
- 1:46:45trying to come back and get it.
- 1:46:47It's going to go against Cleveland, it's going to be holding probably.
- 1:46:52That flag is thrown, it's thrown way downfield by the center referee, he's way downfield.
- 1:46:58Illegal contact, number 59 on the defense, five yards, first down.
- 1:47:04Against Mike Johnson, linebacker for the Browns.
- 1:47:08It's interesting to note that certain referees, that they all have responsibilities,
- 1:47:11and that referee that threw that flag, he allows, he is the one...
- 1:47:14That's the umpire.
- 1:47:15Excuse me, the umpire, all right.
- 1:47:16Well, he is the referee.
- 1:47:17There's only one referee.
- 1:47:18Oh, okay.
- 1:47:19Anyway, the umpire who threw that flag is responsible for the tight end release.
- 1:47:23And there's only one umpire.
- 1:47:26Orson's 10 at the 32-yard line.
- 1:47:30And the flag is flowing again as the 32nd clock may have expired until,
- 1:47:35on our way to that, or someone moved too early.
- 1:47:37Well, Reggie Camp's saying it was Ken Lanier, Ken Lanier's saying, uh-uh, it was Reggie Camp.
- 1:47:42We'll have to let either the umpire or the referee decide this now.
- 1:47:46Or we could let the line judge decide it.
- 1:47:49Or the headlinesman, or the back judge.
- 1:47:53Looks like Heatherling announced it.
- 1:47:56And Coach Lynch, defense, five yards.
- 1:48:00No numbers given, although it appeared to be Reggie Camp, the last defensive end.
- 1:48:06He's the one making these gestures that Mr. Heatherling, who just made that call,
- 1:48:10so I would imagine it was him.
- 1:48:11That's your first tip-off.
- 1:48:14I don't know, the first and five.
- 1:48:16Let's see if John Elway goes for a big play here.
- 1:48:18First and five at the Denver 37.
- 1:48:21Steve Sewell is wide to the right.
- 1:48:22Lance Johnson, Steve Watson is quick to the left.
- 1:48:25Elway's going to throw, dropping back.
- 1:48:27And a deep drop, throws underneath, and the pass is caught at the 42-yard line by Clarence Kay,
- 1:48:32who was just activated.
- 1:48:33And he's got a first down.
- 1:48:35John Kay had been in a drug rehabilitation program in California the last four weeks.
- 1:48:40His first reception of the day.
- 1:48:42And I know he's going to feel good getting back into a Broncos uniform.
- 1:48:46He has been away, as you said, for four weeks.
- 1:48:48They consider him the best blocking tight end.
- 1:48:50Orson Mobley may be the best receiving tight end for this Bronco unit also.
- 1:48:54They also consider him the best blocking tight end in the National Football League.
- 1:48:58Absolutely, he's that type of player.
- 1:49:00He gets down to the first down at the Bronco 45.
- 1:49:04Watson is wide right, Watson wide left.
- 1:49:06Mobley is in motion.
- 1:49:08Elway with a play-action fake.
- 1:49:10Pump fake now looking long, firing down the far sideline.
- 1:49:13Mobley can't hold it.
- 1:49:14It's incomplete.
- 1:49:15At the 35-yard line of Cleveland, as he went airborne trying to make a one-handed catch,
- 1:49:20the Clay Matthews jolted him and knocked the ball loose.
- 1:49:23It was an interesting play on Elway's part because what he did is he faked the play-action.
- 1:49:27Now, when you fake play-action, what you do is you put a hand into the running back,
- 1:49:31and it's designed to look like a running play.
- 1:49:33He cut it out, fake pumped the ball to allow Mobley to get down the sideline,
- 1:49:37then threw in the ball, but it was too high thrown for Mobley to catch.
- 1:49:43Second down at 10 at the 45-yard line of Denver.
- 1:49:50Elway on a delay, hands to Stanley Winder running to his left,
- 1:49:53and he's dropped it midfield by Anthony Griggs and Mike Johnson.
- 1:50:01Game of five yards on the play.
- 1:50:03It'll be third and five.
- 1:50:05Now, from my viewpoint, you get the feeling that the next team that scores could win this game.
- 1:50:09It's that type of game.
- 1:50:10Both teams have been unable to move the ball in any consistency.
- 1:50:13Cleveland had some success in the first half, but right now it's kind of like a little chess match right now.
- 1:50:19You do this, I try to counter, I try to do this, and you try to counter.
- 1:50:23The Browns have six defensive backs in the game.
- 1:50:25Elway from the shotgun, third and five at midfield.
- 1:50:29Three wide receivers to the Broncos.
- 1:50:32Elway retreats inside the 40.
- 1:50:35Firing long, and it's intercepted.
- 1:50:38Mark Harper grabs it, but he's out of bounds.
- 1:50:41And the Browns are furious.
- 1:50:44He stepped in front of Mark Jackson, the intended receiver, and caught it as he was sailing out of bounds.
- 1:50:49And you don't want to argue that point too much because you can get a flag thrown on your front for like contact.
- 1:50:54They only do it on the instant replay to see if in fact he did come down.
- 1:50:57The question was whether he came down with his feet in bounds.
- 1:51:00He made a tremendous catch.
- 1:51:02He stepped right in front of the receiver, came down with both feet.
- 1:51:05I don't know if both feet came down or not.
- 1:51:07He may have it overruled by an instant replay, or he may have it upheld.
- 1:51:15It was a great play.
- 1:51:19See if it stands.
- 1:51:21Well, what did they say he was out of bounds? That was the ruling. Let's see what the replay says.
- 1:51:28They've got the instant replay. They're looking at it to see if in fact he came down with both feet in bounds.
- 1:51:36What do you think, Chuck Everly?
- 1:51:40After an instant replay, look.
- 1:51:42The pass was intercepted by Seagren.
- 1:51:45How about that?
- 1:51:48So it is an interception.
- 1:51:51Mark Harper, a rookie free agent from Alcorn State, taking it off and Cleveland will take over
- 1:51:57as the Broncos were intercepted not only by Harper, but by the replay.
- 1:52:04The first interception, John Elway has suffered this afternoon.
- 1:52:08Ernie Kozar has been kicked off twice.
- 1:52:12First down for the Browns at the Cleveland 30, a 10-10 tie with 8.25 remaining in the third quarter in this AFC championship game.
- 1:52:20Reggie Langhorn is wide to the right.
- 1:52:22Three-year veteran from the middle of the city state, Webster Slaughter is wide to the left.
- 1:52:26Ernest Spiner and Kevin Macker in the I-4 Nation.
- 1:52:30Ernie Kozar takes the snap, play action fake, back to throw, firing long downfield,
- 1:52:36and he overthrows the intended receiver, Webster Slaughter, at the 30-yard line.
- 1:52:41He was well covered by Mike Harden, the right cornerback for Denver.
- 1:52:44That's an open-em up pass.
- 1:52:46Kozar threw that ball about 50 yards in the air just to get those defensive backs,
- 1:52:50just to let them know that he can throw that ball deep.
- 1:52:52Now he's got second down at 10.
- 1:52:54Now he'll come back probably to a safe pass in the 12-17-yard range, maybe a curl,
- 1:52:59but it's almost a definite passing situation, second down at 10, but that's what the defense is thinking.
- 1:53:04Defense alignment are saying, let's get pressure on him.
- 1:53:06Second at 10, definite passing situation.
- 1:53:08Ernie Kozar, who had three 400-yard passing games this year against Miami and Pittsburgh
- 1:53:13in the regular season last week in the playoff against the Jets.
- 1:53:17The handoff to Fontenot running left spins and breaks the tackle, and he's tripped up at the 30-yard line.
- 1:53:22So they will lose the yard.
- 1:53:24Steve Wilson came up to make the tackle.
- 1:53:26I told you it was a definite passing situation. He just didn't hear me.
- 1:53:29He decided he wanted to try to run the ball, but Denver, they play good, solid defense.
- 1:53:34When I say solid, they don't guess. One thing will get you in trouble quicker than anything,
- 1:53:39and as a defensive player, it's a guess and guess wrong.
- 1:53:42Denver play solid up front. They're lying back to drag quickly the ball, and they don't make mental mistakes.
- 1:53:47Lawrence Weathers, who had a 42-yard reception in the first half, is in the game now for Cleveland.
- 1:53:52Four wide receivers, two to each side.
- 1:53:55Fontenot is in the backfield. It's Kozar. Drops back to throw.
- 1:53:59Has to fire it in a hurry. It's under throw and an in-complete at the 45-yard line, although the intended receiver went down.
- 1:54:05That was Webster's water.
- 1:54:07Looks like he got his seat tangled up with Steve Wilson, but Roulon Jones was in there putting a lot of pressure on Bernie Kozar.
- 1:54:14That'll bring up fourth down.
- 1:54:16Roulon Jones, who's a great sack man, of course he is.
- 1:54:19He's got 13 and a half sacks. He had a couple big sacks last week, one for his safety.
- 1:54:23He put tremendous pressure on Kozar.
- 1:54:25Kozar couldn't wait for the play to develop and had to just unload the ball.
- 1:54:29Jeff Gassiter, who averaged 41.2 yards per kick this year for Cleveland, is in the punt.
- 1:54:35Gets off a short end-over-end kick.
- 1:54:38Gerald Wilhite lets it hit. It rolls inside the 30. Fielded by Wilhite, and he's dropped right there.
- 1:54:44A 42-yard punt.
- 1:54:46Dede Hoggard is at a big day on the special teams for Cleveland.
- 1:54:49Was down there to make the stop.
- 1:54:51We've got a timeout with 718 remaining in the third quarter. The Browns and the Broncos tied 10-10.
- 1:54:56Welcome to our stockholders meeting.
- 1:54:58Now last year our profits were down, but we're planning to make little cuts here and there, like dropping AT&T long-distance service.
- 1:55:04Sir?
- 1:55:05Yes, Wilson?
- 1:55:06Wilson, one share. With another long-distance service, we may not save that much, and we'll lose the quality and reliability of AT&T.
- 1:55:11Good point. All in favor of keeping AT&T long-distance, signify by saying aye.
- 1:55:15Aye.
- 1:55:16Next, the stockholders gala party.
- 1:55:17Sir?
- 1:55:18Now in order to save money, everybody will bring one deviled egg.
- 1:55:20Sir?
- 1:55:21Yes, Wilson?
- 1:55:22Wilson, one share. You know, AT&T...
- 1:55:23Wilson, we voted on keeping AT&T.
- 1:55:25But I thought the stockholders might like to know that AT&T has just lowered their out-of-state day and evening direct out rates again as of January 1st.
- 1:55:31Thank you. Now if we make costumes out of bedsheets...
- 1:55:33Wilson, one share.
- 1:55:34What?
- 1:55:35And AT&T is an even greater value with volume discount calling plans like Pro America and Pro State.
- 1:55:39Great. Are you finished?
- 1:55:40Yes, sir.
- 1:55:41Now if you ask your mom to each make a dozen chocolate chip cookies...
- 1:55:43Wilson, one share.
- 1:55:44This better not be about AT&T.
- 1:55:47I move we make peanut butter cookies instead of chocolate chip.
- 1:55:49But cronos, let's...
- 1:55:50AT&T is the right choice.
- 1:55:53Sports question. Who quarterbacked the Miami Hurricanes to the 83 National Championship?
- 1:55:59Do it yourself question. Who can help you do any decorating job better?
- 1:56:04For questions about decorating, Sherwin-Williams has the answers.
- 1:56:09And for paint, wall coverings, floor coverings, window treatments, Sherwin-Williams has the quality.
- 1:56:14So for questions about Bernie Kozar, check a sports almanac. But for decorating...
- 1:56:19Sherwin-Williams.
- 1:56:22With Dave Rose, this is Mel Proctor back at sold out Cleveland Stadium.
- 1:56:27A crowd of over 80,000 here this afternoon on a cold windy day.
- 1:56:31No scoring so far in the third quarter. A 10-10 tie in this AFC title game.
- 1:56:35The Denver Broncos have the ball and will begin this drive at their 30-yard line.
- 1:56:39John Elway is the only Bronco quarterback ever to have two 3,000-yard seasons.
- 1:56:44Passed for nearly 3,500 yards this year.
- 1:56:48Broncos moving right to left.
- 1:56:51Watson is wide to the left.
- 1:56:53Vance Johnson wide right on a delay to hand off the winder.
- 1:56:56Slanding to his right across the 30-yard line where he's met by Anthony Griggs.
- 1:57:01Five-year veteran from Ohio State and another of those former Philadelphia Eagles.
- 1:57:05Now one thing that may be of significance to Denver offense is that
- 1:57:09Gerald Wilhite, the starting left halfback I should say, is on the sideline with a cape.
- 1:57:14He suffered a shoulder injury last week.
- 1:57:16The aggravated in the first half and we haven't seen him in the second half.
- 1:57:19Well he is running back punch, so that's about it.
- 1:57:23Second down, 8-2 to 32.
- 1:57:25Vance Johnson with Steve Watson's foot out to the left side.
- 1:57:30Johnson is in motion left to right.
- 1:57:33Elway dropping back.
- 1:57:35Has time.
- 1:57:36Rook guns it over the middle and is caught by a leaping tight end, Clarence Kay,
- 1:57:40at the 47-yard line for a first down.
- 1:57:44Great catch by Kay going airborne to pull it in.
- 1:57:48One of the things about Kay that's interesting is that, you know,
- 1:57:51as good a tight end as he is, four weeks ago he went on this drug rehabilitation.
- 1:57:55He obviously had a substance problem.
- 1:57:58And Dan Rees, who's the coach at Denver, said,
- 1:58:00he's very concerned about Clarence, the human being, not just Clarence,
- 1:58:03the football player, and he evidently has made a recovery.
- 1:58:06He's back in a Bronco uniform and nothing bigger than that catch.
- 1:58:10First and 10 for the Broncos at the Denver 47-yard line.
- 1:58:14Steve Toole is in motion, Elway on a handoff to Gene Lang driving it out.
- 1:58:19Cross midfield into Cleveland territory.
- 1:58:23Make a standing wind around the carry.
- 1:58:25Sam Clancy made the tackle for Cleveland.
- 1:58:27And Denver is still splitting the Cleveland defense wide, especially Keith Bishop.
- 1:58:32He's got about a yard slip between he and the center, and it makes a natural hold.
- 1:58:36It moves the ends out wider, the linebackers are out wider,
- 1:58:38and makes those holes up the center bigger than you ever believed.
- 1:58:41You just can't believe how tough it is to move and make that tackle as an ozeman.
- 1:58:45Broncos have two tight ends in the game, one of them being used as a u-back.
- 1:58:49That's Mobley, who goes in motion to hand off to Winder,
- 1:58:51twisting and turning up the middle across the 40-and down to the 36-yard line.
- 1:58:55He's got a first down for the Broncos, and Clay Matthews makes the stop.
- 1:58:58And there's another example of it.
- 1:59:00They're splitting him out wide.
- 1:59:01It puts the nozeman about four to five yards from the end.
- 1:59:05And if they can control the nozeman, they've got a natural hole there, and Winder, he's finding it.
- 1:59:10Gene Lang has found that seam.
- 1:59:12It's just a natural hold.
- 1:59:13Now Cleveland has to make some adjustments with their linebackers.
- 1:59:16Vance Johnson is wide to the left.
- 1:59:19Keith Toole is wide to the right.
- 1:59:21Wilhite is back in there running back, along with Sammy Winder.
- 1:59:24They hand off to Wilhite, takes a hip, drives forward, and he's shot down to 35-yard line again.
- 1:59:30It's two yards as Anthony Griggs makes the stop.
- 1:59:33And it's good to see Wilhite back there if you're a Denver Bronco fan,
- 1:59:36because he is one of the premier running backs, blocking backs, and, of course, receivers coming out of the backfield.
- 1:59:41He had 64 catches in the regular season.
- 1:59:43He's an integral part of this Bronco offense.
- 1:59:46He broke the Bronco record for reception by a running back in his season.
- 1:59:49The old mark was set by Bo Dickinson with 60 catches in 1962.
- 1:59:54Second down and eight for Denver, the Cleveland 35, Elway dropping back quickly.
- 1:59:58Looks and guns it underneath the passes, caught by Orson Mobley for a first down at the 26-yard line.
- 2:00:04We've got a penalty marker down back near the line of scrimmage.
- 2:00:06And that's good.
- 2:00:07I believe it's going to be a first-goal foul against Cleveland for Ruff in the quarterback.
- 2:00:10Ricky Camp came in there late.
- 2:00:12It looked like he got a free shot at John Elway, so that'll be tacked on if, in fact, it is.
- 2:00:19Unnecessary roughness, number 96, roughing the passer.
- 2:00:24That's exactly what it was.
- 2:00:26It's all on Ricky Camp, a 275-4-year veteran from California.
- 2:00:31And the penalty will give the Broncos the first down at the Cleveland 12.
- 2:00:34Denver is threatening to take the lead with four minutes left in the third quarter.
- 2:00:38Well, they've been able to run the ball because of those splits.
- 2:00:41They've been able to pass the ball.
- 2:00:42So they've got Winder in the backfield, and they've got Wilhite back there, and they've been finding Orson Mobley.
- 2:00:47This is a good drive by Denver.
- 2:00:49Cleveland takes Kyle Harrison, a defensive lineman, out, and Anthony Griggs, an extra linebacker, checks in.
- 2:00:54Elway on the handoff to Stanley Winder, running to his left across the 15 and wrestled out of bounds at the 12-yard line.
- 2:01:01A game of only a yard.
- 2:01:02And now a fight breaks out between Vance Johnson of Denver and Hanford Dixon of Cleveland.
- 2:01:08A couple of quick punches, though, but no serious damage.
- 2:01:11Well, when you're 5'11", 170 pounds, you don't stay in there long.
- 2:01:14You hit quick and get out of there.
- 2:01:16It's a basic hit and run.
- 2:01:17That's exactly what it is.
- 2:01:20Well, that pass interference penalty, excuse me, say, rough in the pass or penalty was just a foolish mistake by Ricky Camp.
- 2:01:27That really hurt his defensive unit.
- 2:01:30Kyle Harrison is back in.
- 2:01:31The 11-year veteran from Maryland Eastern Shore is the defensive captain.
- 2:01:34Griggs comes out.
- 2:01:36Second down and eight at the 11-yard line.
- 2:01:39Elway back to throw.
- 2:01:42Little screen pass caught by Gene Lang, gives the man a stiff arm, races to the far sideline, and he's inside the 10, down to the 9-yard line.
- 2:01:50Tackle made by Mike Johnson of Cleveland.
- 2:01:55This is one of the downs that really puts a lot of pressure on a defensive unit.
- 2:01:58When you have an Elway back there who has that great mobility, and we saw him run for that long run in this third down situation in the first half,
- 2:02:05he's got third down, he's got about six yards to go for a first down.
- 2:02:09If you get past Rush on him, you've got to get pressure on him to stop his pass, but you also have to stay in front of him to not allow him to run.
- 2:02:16The Browns are expecting a pass.
- 2:02:18They take out the nose tackle.
- 2:02:19Bob Dolan, no way from the shotgun.
- 2:02:22Third and sixth at the Cleveland 9.
- 2:02:25A 10-10 tie.
- 2:02:26Back goes Elway.
- 2:02:27With time, fires into the end zone.
- 2:02:29It's knocked down by Mike Johnson.
- 2:02:31He's squatted it down at the 6-yard line.
- 2:02:34And while the Broncos are shaking up, can't pick up a number, but he's lying in the end zone.
- 2:02:46So that'll bring up fourth down, and Rich Carlos is in the fast field goal.
- 2:02:51Gerald Wilhite is the man who's shaken up.
- 2:02:53He was hurt earlier.
- 2:02:54He was the intended receiver.
- 2:02:56As Elway tried to hit him in the end zone, he got popped, and Elway's pass was deflected.
- 2:03:02What a close call on that interception.
- 2:03:04That really should have been an interception.
- 2:03:05It hit him right smack in the hand.
- 2:03:07But it was just because of the velocity that he throws with, the defender doesn't come up with an interception.
- 2:03:13And we've got a timeout with a score tie, Denver 10 and Cleveland 10.
- 2:03:17This Buds for all that you do, you burn yourself that bruise, you are the one, you make it all run, and whip out of what you do.
- 2:03:34You make America work, and this Buds for you, this Buds for you, it hides a book, St. Louis, Missouri.

- 2:04:16There's more championship football coming up right after this game.
- 2:04:19Don Crickie and Bob Crumpey are standing by a giant stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the Redskins and Giants are getting ready to meet for the NFC title and a Super Bowl berth.
- 2:04:28After the game, you'll have a chance to get into the act by calling Bob Crumpey at 1-800-NFL-LIVE.
- 2:04:33Keep your radio dial tuned to the NFL on NBC.
- 2:04:36I'm Mel Proctor, along with Dave Rowe here in Cleveland. It's near the end of the third quarter, 2.54 remaining.
- 2:04:41And the Denver Broncos will attempt to field goal. This will be about a 26-yarder by Rich Carlos.
- 2:04:46They're doing the regular season, made 20-28, kicked two last week against New England.
- 2:04:52Jerry Kubiak will hold for them, a 26-yard attempt by the Fairfax Carlos.
- 2:05:03Kubiak with his hands spread, takes the snap, spots it down, the kick is on the way, and it is good as the Denver Broncos take the lead on Rich Carlos' second field goal of the game.
- 2:05:13It's now 13-10 Denver.
- 2:05:15That was an important kick for Rich Carlos. He has got to make that kick in order to give them a lead, and he does.
- 2:05:22Wow. I'd like to remind you that on January the 25th, the NFL and NBC will be in Pasadena, California for Super Bowl XXI.
- 2:05:29Our coverage begins at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on the Free Game Show with Bob Costas.
- 2:05:33Then Don Cricky and Bob Crumpy will bring you all the action.
- 2:05:37After the game, it will be your turn to participate by calling 1-800-NFL-LIVE, all coming your way on Sunday, January the 25th at Super Bowl, right here on NBC Radio.
- 2:05:50Well, one thing you don't want to do if you're Cleveland Brown is to panic in this situation. You're only down three minutes, three points.
- 2:05:55You've got two minutes and 50 seconds left in this third quarter, a lot of time, and you've got one of the best scoring machines in the history of the National Football League with Mark Mosley.
- 2:06:04You remember a few years ago he had that tremendous string where he put together a lot of kicks.
- 2:06:09Twenty-three straight.
- 2:06:10Twenty-three straight field goals at all different distances, and all they do is have to get in his range.
- 2:06:16Dropping back deep for Cleveland, Gerald McNeil, Reggie Langhorn, and Herman Fontenot on a pause five seconds for station identification.
- 2:06:24Two o'clock, 26 degrees at WMAQ Radio Chicago.
- 2:06:30Rich Collis will kick it off. Collis, we mentioned, is a barefoot kicker, which has to be rough on a day like this, but when he is not kicking and he's on the sidelines, he's got a bright orange down boot that he wears to keep that foot warm.
- 2:06:43As I look on the sideline over there, someone's got his food on. I guess they're trying to keep it warm for him.
- 2:06:49The cold, windy afternoon here in Cleveland, temperatures in the 30s, the wind's really whooping around, coming off Lake Erie and in the distance out on the lake, you can see the big breakers.
- 2:06:59You know, I've never understood with a barefoot kicker what the advantage is, why the advantage. They say they feel the ball better. I'm sure they do.
- 2:07:06But I've never seen the advantage of why you have to kick barefoot over kicking with, say, a soccer-style shoe.
- 2:07:13Collis approaches the football. Here's his kickoff, a high, short end-over-end kick.
- 2:07:19It's taken by Herman Fondo, running it back across the 25-30. 35-40, out to the 45-50, and dragged down at midfield.
- 2:07:26But there's a penalty marker down. Good run back by Herman Fondo.
- 2:07:30Jaren Cuomo made the tackle for the Denver Broncos, but there's a flag lying back at the 27-yard line.
- 2:07:39That'll be the illegal block in the back. That's the one. It's a five-yard penalty where they just, what they do is you push someone in the back.
- 2:07:45It's not the clip where you're blocking below the waist. It's just a, they call it almost an inadvertent show from behind.
- 2:07:52Illegal block, above the waist, in the back. Number 58, on your return. Ten yards, face down.
- 2:08:01Scott Nicholas, guilty of the illegal block.
- 2:08:04And Mel, to tell you the impact that that penalty has, it looks as if it's just a five-yard penalty, but they had the ball at the 50-yard line, so that's a 33-yard penalty,
- 2:08:13because now they're back on their own 17.
- 2:08:15Fine run back by Herman Fondo is negated by the penalty, and it's the first down for the Browns at the Cleveland 17. Denver leading 13-10.
- 2:08:23Browns have been penalized ten times today for 62 yards.
- 2:08:29Backs in the I-formation, Biner and Mack. Reggie Langhorn is in motion. The handoff is earned as Mack, the second man through, and he bucks it off to the 21-yard line.
- 2:08:38Gain of four yards on the play. Both Mack and Biner gained over 1,000 yards each last year, only the third duo in NFL history to accomplish that feat.
- 2:08:46Larry Zalk and Mercury Morris each gained over 1,000 yards. The Dolphins in 72. Franco Harrison and Rocky Blyer accomplished the feat. The Steelers in 76.
- 2:08:57And if you're a Cleveland Brown, you have to believe that's one thing that the offensive linemen have said when Kozar is in there.
- 2:09:02He says, don't worry, we're going to drive this ball down the field. He's got great confidence, and he exudes it to his offensive line.
- 2:09:08Ozzie Newsom is wide to the right. Herman Fondo is wide to the left. Mack is the lone setback.
- 2:09:15Long count by Bernie Kozar, dropping back to throw. Looks left and completes the pass to 32-yard line to Webster Slaughter.
- 2:09:22Crosses 35 to the 40 and drops there. Webster Slaughter, a rookie from San Diego State who had 40 with Sessions during the regular season.
- 2:09:31Mike Harden and Randy Robbins bring him down at the 40. That's the first time for Cleveland. Slaughter looks like he may be hurt.
- 2:09:38He got stung in the left shoulder when he went down. The thing that made that play work is that Webster Slaughter really ran the defensive back about 12 to 15 yards deep, did a quick curl.
- 2:09:48He got the ball. He kind of swung off there. The defensive back didn't react quick enough, and he picked up the additional yardage.
- 2:09:54Brian Brennan is wide to the left along with Reggie Langhorn. Mack and Fondo in the backfield. First down for the Cleveland Browns at the Cleveland 40-yard line.
- 2:10:05Kozar with a play-action fake. Back to throw. Looks, fires, and it's caught along the far sidelines of the 38-yard line by Reggie Langhorn for a first down.
- 2:10:17And you have to love Bernie Kozar in this situation. He goes in that huddle. He says, you've got to believe we've got the magic.
- 2:10:24Everybody in Cleveland thinks this is their year. He goes in there, zoos that offense, and now he's come up with two big plays.
- 2:10:30You know, a lot of quarterbacks in this situation. He's thrown two interceptions. He's behind. We get rattle, especially with the inexperience he has, but not Bernie Kozar.
- 2:10:39Clarence Weathers is in the game. He's wide to the left. Brennan is put out to the near side along with Ernest Miner.
- 2:10:47Kozar on the handoff to Mack, straight ahead, driving to the 36th, a game of a couple of yards. Jim Ryan and Tom Jackson bring him down.
- 2:10:55Getting back to Kozar, Paul Farrow on the left guard said that last week when the Browns were down 20-10 with just over four minutes left in regulation that Kozar came into the huddle and said, men, we're going to go get this game.
- 2:11:06They were just amazed by how he pulled this team together and he was true to his word. They came from behind to win it in double overtime.
- 2:11:13One of the things you have to admire him, he came into Cleveland. Who wants to play in Cleveland? Bernie Kozar did. He said it when he was drafted.
- 2:11:20Well, he's from Boardman, Ohio. The handoff is to Mack, starts up the middle, bounces the outside, running down the near sideline and puts out a bound inside the 30.
- 2:11:29They'll mark him out of bounds at the 27-yard line. Now another fight breaks out as Mack gets into it with a couple of Broncos. Ernest Miner also over there.
- 2:11:39Boy, a lot of jawing going on in this game. Nobody's swinging, but everybody right up to the other guy's face. This is a day you don't want to hit anybody, it hurts.
- 2:11:48And I thought that was really interesting in Kozar. He said, I want to play with Cleveland. Like you said, there was a young boy who was brought to this stadium, this stadium's been some of the greatest football players to ever play this game.
- 2:11:57He said, this is where I want to play. Everybody always wants to go to the so-called southern teams or the teams that have the great records, but he wanted to play here.
- 2:12:05First down for the Cleveland Browns at the Denver 27. Denver leading 13-10, 14 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- 2:12:12Three wide receivers for the Browns. Kozar on the handoff to Mack, off-left tackle, driving hard down to the 20-yard line.
- 2:12:21Ricky Hundley and Steve Foley coming up to make the stop, and that should bring the quarter to an end.
- 2:12:28Kevin Mack is carried 20 times for 82 yards, and that's the end of the third quarter from Cleveland Stadium, as the Browns are coming to life behind the running of Kevin Mack.
- 2:12:39And at the end of three quarters, this AFC Championship game, it's Denver 13 and Cleveland's end.
- 2:12:44A cough has turned your throat to taste. You want relief and good taste. Throat's got fix with Vicks.
- 2:12:51Problem throat? You want a Vicks throat drop. It's real relief and really delicious.
- 2:12:56Melts into a refreshing syrup that coats and soothes dry, irritated throats. Vicks throat drop, medicated, so use only as directed.
- 2:13:04You're skiing and shitting on the fly. You look great, but your throat is dry. Throat's got fix with Vicks.
- 2:13:11Throat drops from Vicks, of course.
- 2:13:14I'll talk to you with Dave Rowe back in Cleveland, a crowd of over 80,000 here this afternoon, and this is the NFL on NBC.
- 2:13:21Business Shuffle with Chicago Bear Willie Galt.

- 2:13:49There's a whole lot more, like the service you get from Ambassador. So shuffle on down, check the Canon line at Ambassador.
- 2:13:56You'll be in time. Get a color poster of Willie Galt.
- 2:13:59This is his fifth offer. It's not my fault. In the Hancock Building and out in the Byrds in Elk Grove Village where the word is heard.
- 2:14:06World Class speed, performance and more.
- 2:14:09Catch Canon equipment at Ambassador door. Call 228-5700.
- 2:14:13Then you'll see your office will run wonderfully.
- 2:14:17That's 228-5700.
- 2:14:19The Cleveland Browns using the running of tough, durable Kevin Mack of driven down to the 20.
- 2:14:29Show you how tough he is and how durable he played the full USFL season 1985 during the Browns with the training camp.
- 2:14:36And last year rushed for over a thousand yards. Great football almost year round.
- 2:14:41Second down three at the 20. Action moving right to left.
- 2:14:44Mack running to his right across the 20 driving forward inside the 15 down to the 14 yard line in the first down.
- 2:14:51Just running over Denver Broncos.
- 2:14:53Steve Foley finally brought him down and what a block by Kevin Biner.
- 2:14:58Biner has been on injury reserve for what eight or nine weeks and he comes in here throws a great block.
- 2:15:03It is the running of Kevin Mack, but Biner is the one that really is throwing the great block on that play to spring him.
- 2:15:10Mack and Biner had played only seven quarters together this year still being reunited this afternoon this playoff game.
- 2:15:17First out at the 14 yard line of Denver.
- 2:15:20There he holds the tight end just on the right side to the left.
- 2:15:23Mack is the lone setback, a wide receiver to each side.
- 2:15:26And it's Mack again straight ahead driving down to the 11 yard line.
- 2:15:31Carl Mecklenburg makes the stop. Another little skirmish breaks out.
- 2:15:35And who starts it?
- 2:15:37It was Biner. He used to have field throw and blocks on Lillie the safety on that play.
- 2:15:42He just went down and leveled him.
- 2:15:45It was Ernest Biner I should say. Did I say Kevin Biner? I meant to say Ernest Biner.
- 2:15:49But they really are matching pairs of running backs.
- 2:15:51They've got similar abilities, similar styles, they're both bruising type runners.
- 2:15:56And a lot of times you can get them mixed up because they both wear four, 34 and 44.
- 2:16:00Reggie Langhorn and Ernest Biner wide to the right.
- 2:16:05Kozart takes the snap, hands to Mack, running to his right, drives forward inside to 10,
- 2:16:10down to the 8 yard line where Simon Plutcher, a 240 pound two year veteran from Houston, brings him down.
- 2:16:16Mentioned Mack and Biner, Kevin Mack is a lot of credit to Ernest Biner for helping him when he first came into the NFL last year.
- 2:16:23Mack broke Jim Brown's rookie rushing record for the Browns last year with 1,104 yards.
- 2:16:31Now the third down and three, big down. Boy this is an awfully big down.
- 2:16:35They don't want to have to settle for a field goal not after having driven the ball almost the length of the field.
- 2:16:41Langhorn splits to the right, Brian Brunnen and Clarence Weathers are wide to the left.
- 2:16:45Norman Fontenot is in the backfield now.
- 2:16:48Kozart with a short drop, looks to his left, retreating and he throws it away.
- 2:16:53Threw it out of the end zone.
- 2:16:55Brian Brunnen was the nearest man to it.
- 2:16:59I think he wanted to go to Fontenot first and Fontenot stepped up then decided he was just going to fly out of the backfield.
- 2:17:04When he did, the Bronx was the delegated linebacker with him.
- 2:17:07They said hey he's caught too many passes.
- 2:17:09Kozart was under a lot of pressure and in comes Mr. Mosley.
- 2:17:13Boy I tell you every kick is big now.
- 2:17:15This will be a 26 yard attempt by Mark Mosley who kicked the field goal just before the end of the first half to tie the score at 10.
- 2:17:22And now he'll try to tie it at 13.
- 2:17:25It's interesting to know that Schottenheimer, when he got that second chance, Schottenheimer he asked what was the words to Mosley.
- 2:17:30He told him, he said go in there and kick this one, make it good so we can all go home.
- 2:17:35I'm tired.
- 2:17:36When Mosley missed the field goal in the first overtime period he was asked how he felt.
- 2:17:41He said he felt like he had 80,000 people on his shoulders, all of them with knives aimed at his back.
- 2:17:45Said he didn't want to end his career that way.
- 2:17:48And he kicked the game winner in the second overtime period to give the Browns the victory.
- 2:17:51Jeff Gossett spots it down and Mosley's kick is perfect.
- 2:17:54So we are tied again with 12.38 remaining in the fourth quarter in this AFC Championship game.
- 2:18:00It's Cleveland 13 and Denver 13.
- 2:18:03Maybe you're a movie and maybe you're the kind of person who wouldn't mind movie himself to save a few bucks.
- 2:18:10But maybe you're wondering just what you'd be getting yourself into.
- 2:18:13Well maybe you ought to call your nearby rider dealer because he's got things like hand trucks and furniture pads.
- 2:18:20So the heavy stuff becomes light and the light stuff becomes safe.
- 2:18:24So pull out your yellow pages and call Rider now.
- 2:18:27If you do, the only thing you'll be getting yourself into is a new home.
- 2:18:32Life is full of changes and State Farm is there.
- 2:18:35We can't clean out this garage.
- 2:18:37Why not?
- 2:18:38You'd have to throw away too many memories.
- 2:18:40Yeah, remember when Jenny rode the tricycle?
- 2:18:43Look around you.
- 2:18:44If you see your insurance needs have changed, auto, home, life, or health,
- 2:18:48see a State Farm agent for a family insurance checkup.
- 2:18:51The advice is free and the decisions are yours.
- 2:18:54And why doesn't neighbor look back at the who?
- 2:18:58State Farm is there.
- 2:19:01Mel Proctor with Dave Rowe back at Cleveland Stadium where Mark Mosley, 26-yard field goal,
- 2:19:07his second of the game is tied to score 13 all.
- 2:19:10Mosley a three-time pro bowler, originally drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 2:19:15also played with Houston for most of his career with the Redskins.
- 2:19:18It was a crushing blow for him when he was released by Washington.
- 2:19:21You know, you talk about Rich Collins being a barefoot kicker,
- 2:19:24and how barefoot kickers feel they have a better touch,
- 2:19:26but Mosley wears about 10 pairs of socks.
- 2:19:29He's one of the few conventional kickers.
- 2:19:32I can't think of another conventional kicker.
- 2:19:34When you say conventional, you mean non-soccer style that approaches the ball straight on.
- 2:19:38He's got big old square-toed shoes.
- 2:19:40He looks like he's kind of a throwback to the 60s and 70s in the world of professional football.
- 2:19:47Reminiscent of some great kickers here in Cleveland, Lou the Toe Groza and Don Cockroft.
- 2:19:54Mosley ready to kick off with 12.38 left in the fourth quarter of 13 all tie.
- 2:19:59Ken Bell and Gene Lang are back deep for the Denver Broncos.
- 2:20:03Here's Mosley's kickoff. It's a good one.
- 2:20:05High end over end kick. It'll be taken by Lang at the 5th grade ahead of the 10.
- 2:20:0915 tries to cut back and he jumps at the 18-yard line.
- 2:20:13Again, tremendous coverage by Cleveland on the special teams.
- 2:20:16Major Everett was down there to make the tackle.
- 2:20:19Well, the mark of a great special teams unit is anytime you tackle that kickoff inside the 20-yard line,
- 2:20:24because if you allow it to go in the end zone, you automatically get it out to the 20-yard line,
- 2:20:29and Cleveland has come down consistently,
- 2:20:31stopping Denver from returning it at least out to the 20-yard line.
- 2:20:36First down for the Broncos, moving left or right.
- 2:20:38It's all up a 19-yard line.
- 2:20:40Mark Jackson slips out wide to the right.
- 2:20:44He's got a Bronco rookie record for receiving yards this year.
- 2:20:48Stanley Weiner and Gene Lang are the running back.
- 2:20:51Steve Toole is in motion from the wing left.
- 2:20:53The pitch is to Lang running to his left.
- 2:20:55Cuts up field across the 20- to the 23-yard line.
- 2:20:59Brought down by Mike Johnson and the free safety Chris Rockin.
- 2:21:04Gene Lang, a three-year veteran from LSU,
- 2:21:06began the season as a starter, but then knee and ankle injuries took their toll,
- 2:21:10and Will Hyte moved into the starting lineup along with Stanley Weiner.
- 2:21:14Now, I just got a funny feeling that Elway is going to go upstairs and throw this ball in this situation.
- 2:21:19They have just not been able to grind out consistently on the ground.
- 2:21:23I just get the feeling that anytime he's going to throw in them long bombs.
- 2:21:26The Browns have their run defense in.
- 2:21:30Second down and six. Back goes Elway.
- 2:21:32Looks to his right, guns a pass, a drop by the tie down Orson Mobley at the 31.
- 2:21:37It was right in his hand.
- 2:21:39It really was, and Elway walked disgustedly about 10 yards away from the huddle.
- 2:21:44He kind of took his hand, just kind of snapped it down and walked over to the sideline,
- 2:21:48forced to get the play, but also just to vent his frustrations,
- 2:21:51because that ball was right in Mowgli's belly.
- 2:21:54But it's cold, fingers may be a little numb,
- 2:21:57and as hard as Elway throws the football, it's not as easy to catch as it may seem.
- 2:22:01Now, in fairness to Mowgli, it's a tough catch, yes.
- 2:22:05But catchable.
- 2:22:07Third down and six from the 23, shotgun formation.
- 2:22:10Steve Watson goes in motion.
- 2:22:13Back goes Elway, setting up with the 12.
- 2:22:15Guns a pass out along the near sideline, and it's caught by Vance Johnson at the 28.
- 2:22:22Looks like it might be short.
- 2:22:24Oh, that's a critical mistake. You have got to get first down yards.
- 2:22:28Third down and about eight yards to go, and he just, when he made his throw pattern,
- 2:22:32he didn't make it deep enough.
- 2:22:34He caught the ball, he immediately went to the ground,
- 2:22:36and he comes up about a yard short, and they're going to have to punt.
- 2:22:38He picked up five yards, but they needed six for the first dial,
- 2:22:41so it'll be fourth and one.
- 2:22:43Score tied, 13 all, 11-14 remaining.
- 2:22:46And Gerald McNeil turned to the dog pound and pumped his fist,
- 2:22:49and they react, howling and barking.
- 2:22:56McNeil, who was second in the AFC and tried to return, averaging 11.1.
- 2:23:03High snap, and Mike Horan gets the kick away.
- 2:23:05Almost got it blocked, a wobbly spiral.
- 2:23:07McNeil will take it at the 32, running to his left across the 35 to the 40
- 2:23:11and tripped up at the 41 yard line.
- 2:23:14Had he broken that tackle, it might have been a big run back.
- 2:23:18And listen to this crowd. They're going to come alive with Bernie Kozar.
- 2:23:21They know he just drove down the field, and now they want another drive,
- 2:23:25and they're going to scream and yell.
- 2:23:27We have 10-45 remaining in the fourth quarter with a score tied, 13 all.
- 2:23:32Hello, Lawrence.
- 2:23:34Hi, you or someone delivered an anniversary bouquet to my wife this afternoon?
- 2:23:37Oh, yes, Mr. Silled. The dozen long-sand roses.
- 2:23:40I found them thrown on the lawn.
- 2:23:42Not again.
- 2:23:43Delco Electronics, case history number 29.
- 2:23:45You see, we just got a new delivery van, and it has a Delco music system in it,
- 2:23:49and you understand once our people get to listening to it,
- 2:23:51they don't want to get out of the van.
- 2:23:52I know, I know. I've got a GM car with a Delco music system I know where of you speak.
- 2:23:56Is that stereo?
- 2:23:57Stereo, it's like being there.
- 2:23:58Yeah.
- 2:23:59You know what Delco does?
- 2:24:00What?
- 2:24:01When the GM vehicle is on the drawing board,
- 2:24:02they design the sound right into it with all those fancy computer designs.
- 2:24:05Is that how they do it?
- 2:24:06Whatever the acoustics call for, Delco does it fearlessly.
- 2:24:08So no wonder our people don't want to get out of the van.
- 2:24:10Hey, can you blame them? I wouldn't get out.
- 2:24:12No, hopefully though they'll throw their bouquet on your porch next time.
- 2:24:14I'll tell them to aim for the actual porch.
- 2:24:16Thanks a lot.
- 2:24:17Happy anniversary.
- 2:24:18Bye.
- 2:24:19When you decide to get a Delco music system for your GM truck or van,
- 2:24:22you'll love it too much to leave it.
- 2:24:24So, did you tell that Sloan's a singer too?
- 2:24:26Well, I got a lost face.
- 2:24:27Whoa, what was that?
- 2:24:28That sounded like bottles being thrown at our front door.
- 2:24:30I guess the milkman must have gotten a Delco too.
- 2:24:32What?
- 2:24:33From the waves of the Pacific
- 2:24:36through the heartland USA
- 2:24:39From the old South to New England
- 2:24:42and pass along the way
- 2:24:45From the Great Lakes
- 2:24:46through the wire on the mountain to the shore
- 2:24:50We're your neighbor and you've made us America's favorite song
- 2:24:55Get prepared to say you've made us
- 2:24:58America's favorite song
- 2:25:01K-Mine, the saving place.
- 2:25:03And only a second here in the National Football League,
- 2:25:06Bernie Kozara passed for 3,854 yards,
- 2:25:10the third best total in Brown's history.
- 2:25:12And Kozara and the Browns will begin this drive from the Cleveland 40,
- 2:25:16moving right to left here at Chilly Cleveland Stadium.
- 2:25:19Herman Fondo and Reggie Langhorne are wide to the right
- 2:25:23and Langhorne the inside man.
- 2:25:25Klerk Weathers is split wide to the left.
- 2:25:28Kevin Mack is the lone setback.
- 2:25:30Bernie Kozara with a short drop, rolling to his right.
- 2:25:34Now in trouble, a loser's sack but goes down,
- 2:25:37a rule on Joe's nearly took his head off.
- 2:25:39The good thing he got down, he might have been hurt.
- 2:25:42Well he saw a rule on Joe coming from his left side
- 2:25:45as he stepped on those pockets and he immediately went to the ground
- 2:25:48and rule on was right there in the valley.
- 2:25:51If he had hit him, he'd have broke his neck on that play.
- 2:25:54He really was coming full blast and had those arms out,
- 2:25:57was going to make the big tackle and Kozara just jumped underneath it.
- 2:26:00And well he got sacked but he avoided the big hit.
- 2:26:03Avoided decapitation.
- 2:26:05Boy, he did on that play, wow.
- 2:26:07But he'll take the sack instead.
- 2:26:09Jones during the season has 13 and a half sacks,
- 2:26:11the New Bronco record.
- 2:26:13Lost a three, a second and 13 from the 38.
- 2:26:17Sore tied, 13 all, 10-11 left in the fourth quarter.
- 2:26:22Kozara backpedals into the pocket, fires underneath
- 2:26:25and it's caught by Brennan near midfield at the 49
- 2:26:28and he's tackled by Dennis Smith and Mike Harden.
- 2:26:32Brian Brennan, the all-time leading receiver in Boston College history.
- 2:26:38Going to about eight yards will be third and two.
- 2:26:40I was just going to bring up a point I think that can bear some,
- 2:26:43have some bearing on this game.
- 2:26:44And that was when Denver had to settle for those two field goals
- 2:26:47when they had that first down on about the three-yard line
- 2:26:49and weren't able to get it in.
- 2:26:50Then when they ran that interception down there,
- 2:26:52again they were unable to punch it in, had to settle for two field goals.
- 2:26:56That could be a big factor in this game because they should have scored touchdowns.
- 2:26:59Anytime you've got first down inside the five, you should be able to drive it in.
- 2:27:03Langhorn and Fontanar are wide to the right.
- 2:27:05Weather's wide to the left.
- 2:27:07A handoff to Kevin Mack, planting to his right
- 2:27:09and he's tacked up near midfield by the veteran Tom Jackson.
- 2:27:12They needed two yards for a first down but he didn't get it.
- 2:27:16There's no decision for Schottenheimer, Coach Schottenheimer from the Cleveland.
- 2:27:19They have got to punt the ball in this situation.
- 2:27:22The crowd is yelling, go for it, but boy that could be a critical mistake in this situation.
- 2:27:27Looks like they're going to go for it.
- 2:27:29Wow.
- 2:27:30They don't know.
- 2:27:31They're staying in there.
- 2:27:32They don't get it.
- 2:27:33Denver's going to have great field position.
- 2:27:37Dave Pizzulli is in there.
- 2:27:38They like to use him as a lead back, as a pullback in short yardage situations.
- 2:27:44He's a defensive lineman, but they use him much like the Bears did
- 2:27:48with refrigerator Perry last year before he ballooned up to 350.
- 2:27:51Pizzulli is a 260 pounder.
- 2:27:53He'll be the lead back in the eye along with Kevin Mack.
- 2:27:56More than one from the 50-yard line.
- 2:28:00Bernie Kozai up the movement on the right side.
- 2:28:04The right tackle, Cody Risen pointing at one of the Broncos, Jim Ryan.
- 2:28:09Question is who moved first?
- 2:28:11Well now he wasn't a tackle.
- 2:28:12He was playing a position.
- 2:28:14He was playing the end man.
- 2:28:15Now he can reshift.
- 2:28:16He was in a three-point position, but he can reshift.
- 2:28:20Foul start, number 63, accumulating the style of the play.
- 2:28:25Five yards, fourth down.
- 2:28:27Against Risen.
- 2:28:29Well he called it five yards, first down.
- 2:28:31What he meant is a five-yard penalty.
- 2:28:32He said he simulated the start of a play.
- 2:28:35He can shift, but he can't do anything to draw the defense offside, and that's what he did.
- 2:28:40Looks like he was setting up the pass block.
- 2:28:42I think he was.
- 2:28:43He was straight and forth and won.
- 2:28:44Now I'll tell you the truth, I think that Cleveland will punt now.
- 2:28:46I think they certainly should punt.
- 2:28:48I would greatly disagree with that play.
- 2:28:50You just don't go for it to do what's safe in a situation like this.
- 2:28:54Now the punting unit comes on.
- 2:28:56Now he may, Kozar may have been trying to draw the defense offside, take the five-yard penalty, and then punt the ball.
- 2:29:02That's what I thought he may have been trying to do, but if they had gone for that and not made it, they'd give Denver great field position.
- 2:29:08Now Cleveland's calling for a timeout.
- 2:29:10Jeff Gossett was back in punt formation and then panically was signaling for a timeout.
- 2:29:15Well they have got really, seriously, if you go for that play and you don't make it, you give Denver great field position.
- 2:29:21That's a crazy play.
- 2:29:23I think that penalty may have been the best thing that happened to Cleveland, because now they're forced to punt it.
- 2:29:28Crazy play unless it works to keep the drive alive.
- 2:29:31Well, but wait a minute now.
- 2:29:33What happens if it doesn't?
- 2:29:34If they get a bad snap, if the running back slips?
- 2:29:37There's so many things that can go wrong.
- 2:29:39Apparently Marty Schottenheimer has great confidence in his defense.
- 2:29:42Well, I understand what you're saying, but that is a foolish play.
- 2:29:47You just have to play the percentages.
- 2:29:49It's like taking points off the scoreboard.
- 2:29:51You get a field goal and you get that and all of a sudden you get a penalty and you take those points off.
- 2:29:55There's a lot of times you won't score after that.
- 2:29:58That could have been a crucial play in this game.
- 2:30:01Speaking of Marty Schottenheimer, he has some ties to Bronco assistant Joe Collier.
- 2:30:05He played for Collier with the Buffalo Bills in the AFL.
- 2:30:07He was his linebacker coach.
- 2:30:09And then Marty was out of football working as a real estate developer in Denver for three years.
- 2:30:14Decided he wanted to get back into football.
- 2:30:16And he used to visit Joe Collier who was then a Broncos assistant and visit with him.
- 2:30:20Joe Collier's urging he got back in the game and Joe put him in touch with Dick Corey.
- 2:30:23He was the head coach of the Portland Storm in the World Football League.
- 2:30:26And they signed Marty Schottenheimer as a player coach.
- 2:30:29He hurt his shoulder and was unable to continue as a player, but that began his coaching career.
- 2:30:33He's been a great defensive coach here as a defensive coordinator for several years under San Martino.
- 2:30:39Then he took over when they fired San Martino and they've had their greatest success.
- 2:30:43Gerald Wilhite is standing back at the Denver 12 awaiting the kick by Gossett.
- 2:30:47Here comes the big rush.
- 2:30:48He gets the kick away, a high driving spiral.
- 2:30:51Wilhite will take it at the 8 running to his left and he falls down the 12 yard line.
- 2:30:56And three Cleveland Browns are all over him.
- 2:30:59Great punt by Gossett, 47 yards.
- 2:31:02Kind of surprising that Wilhite decided to run it back.
- 2:31:05Well, you don't catch the ball inside your own 10 yard line.
- 2:31:09You let the ball carry into the end zone.
- 2:31:11He didn't do it.
- 2:31:12Now they're backed up on their own 12 yard line.
- 2:31:14And with 8.34 remaining in this AFC Championship game, we'll take a break.
- 2:31:19Hi, this is my get-go.

- 2:32:58Denver, BR.
- 2:32:59Going to begin this drive from their 11-yard line with 834 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- 2:33:05Short side, 13 all.
- 2:33:07The line has completed 13 of 44 passes for 106 yards, an intercepted one.
- 2:33:13Here come the Broncos moving left or right.
- 2:33:16Steve Washington splits out wide to the left.
- 2:33:18Mark Jackson, a little 5'9", 175.
- 2:33:21Look, he is wide to the right.
- 2:33:23Weinder and Langer, the running back, the handoff, the liners, landing to his left.
- 2:33:26And he's cut down at the 12-yard line by Sam Clancy, the former basketball star at Pitt.
- 2:33:31He played with the Seattle Seahawks and then in the USFL before coming back to the NFL with Cleveland.
- 2:33:37And Clancy almost tackled that ball away from him that time.
- 2:33:40He went in there and on his tackle, he grabbed the football, almost pulled it loose.
- 2:33:45Second down and nine from the 13-yard line.
- 2:33:51Weinder is a long setback.
- 2:33:55Double tight end for the Broncos.
- 2:33:57In fact, they have all three tight ends in the game now.
- 2:33:59The playback, Mobley is in motion.
- 2:34:01Elway with play action.
- 2:34:02Running to his right, fires on the run.
- 2:34:04The 10-grit at the 20-yard line and nearly picked off.
- 2:34:07He tried to hit Steve Watson.
- 2:34:09Frank Minnifield broke it up.
- 2:34:10What a play by Minnifield.
- 2:34:12The ball was thrown into Watson.
- 2:34:14He had it.
- 2:34:15Minnifield got his arm inside and ripped that ball out before Watson could pull it all the way in.
- 2:34:20Great man-on-man coverage.
- 2:34:22You wonder why they're considered two of the best tandem quarterbacks.
- 2:34:25Tandem of cornerbacks.
- 2:34:27Minnifield, unbelievable man-on-man coverage.
- 2:34:30Just tremendous coverage.
- 2:34:32Lance Sampson, Vance Johnson, Mark Jackson, Steve Watson.
- 2:34:36Four wide receivers in the game now for Denver.
- 2:34:39Three of them.
- 2:34:41Jackson, Watson, and Johnson are wide left.
- 2:34:43Sampson is wide to the right.
- 2:34:45Wilhite's in there in the backfield and Elway will throw from the shot gun.
- 2:34:49He retreats to the five.
- 2:34:51The quarterback draws across the 10-to-15, 20, 25, and down to 27-yard line.
- 2:34:56There's a penalty marker down.
- 2:34:58And where it was thrown might indicate a hold against Denver.
- 2:35:01Almost definitely a hold.
- 2:35:03And it was a designed play for a quarterback draw.
- 2:35:06What Elway does is he takes the ball, drops back about four to five yards,
- 2:35:10and he finds that team and with his ability to run, he's got great speed,
- 2:35:13four-six feet he scrambles up there, but it's a hold against Denver Broncos.
- 2:35:18They're going to bring it back, march off the penalty, and it'll be about the seven-yard line.
- 2:35:22Elway's got a half-fifty, half-fifty-four, half the distance to the goal, third down.
- 2:35:27Holding call on the center, Billy Bryan.
- 2:35:30We'll mention Elway's running ability.
- 2:35:31Let's ask the quarterback in rushing.
- 2:35:34The average 4.9 yards per carry this year.
- 2:35:36Now facing a third-and-fifteen situation from the seven-yard line.
- 2:35:40And now he had a tremendous play last week from this distance.
- 2:35:43He's got that great scampering ability.
- 2:35:46Seven-forty-four left in the fourth quarter.
- 2:35:48A 13 all-time.
- 2:35:51Elway from the shotgun, retreating into his end zone, getting some pressure,
- 2:35:55and he throws underneath to Steve Sewell with two blockers in front of him across the five to the ten.
- 2:35:59Cuts back at the 15.
- 2:36:00He's jumped at the 17-yard line.
- 2:36:02Short of the first down.
- 2:36:04Mark Harper made the tackle.
- 2:36:07Elway absolutely mud, head to toe.
- 2:36:10He's got mud on his complete uniform.
- 2:36:12He had to take a hit that time to draw the defensive line in and allow them to rush him.
- 2:36:17He had to wait the last second to dump that ball off on the screenplay.
- 2:36:20That's what makes it effective, and he took quite a hit in the end zone.
- 2:36:24Mark Harper, clearly with the defensive back, has shaken up on the play.
- 2:36:27He started to walk off the field, was a little wobbly, and then collapsed at the 22-yard line.
- 2:36:32And two of the trainers are out to check on him.
- 2:36:34They run out quickly, and, of course, those are not charged timeouts.
- 2:36:37Anytime a player is hurt on the field now, they take a referee's timeout to allow them to come out.
- 2:36:43It used to be the old thing, get to the sideline, we can't waste the timeout, and they just about drag people off.
- 2:36:49The NFL came out and said, listen, we'll call a timeout.
- 2:36:52Anytime there's an injury, we'll call a timeout and we'll allow that player to get off the field.
- 2:36:59Now Harper is being helped off the field.
- 2:37:02Kickers have been important in today's game.
- 2:37:04Both putters, Gossett and Horan, have had outstanding days.
- 2:37:08Each place kicker, Mark Mosley and Ritz-Thomas, have kicked a pair of field goals.
- 2:37:16One of the referees has come all the way over here to the sideline.
- 2:37:19I don't know what he's doing.
- 2:37:21Everybody's...
- 2:37:23Mark Horan is into punt.
- 2:37:25The ice cube, Gerald McNeil, is back deep standing at the 40-yard line of Cleveland.
- 2:37:29He was so named by the putter, Jeff Gossett, who saw an ice cube on his plate during training camp,
- 2:37:34that they noticed how slippery and elusive the ice cube was.
- 2:37:37He looked at Gerald McNeil and said, that ice cube reminds me of you.
- 2:37:43I'm going to call you ice cube.
- 2:37:44I thought maybe it was because he could have sit on the refrigerator's back easily
- 2:37:48and have lots of room to run around.
- 2:37:52No, Dave.
- 2:37:54No way, huh?
- 2:37:56Don't you think he could sit on the refrigerator's back and have plenty of room to dance?
- 2:38:00The refrigerator would probably eat him.
- 2:38:0711 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
- 2:38:15The 32nd clock has not worked for most of the game.
- 2:38:18They're keeping it down on the sideline.
- 2:38:21A reminder that we've got more football action coming up.
- 2:38:24The NFC Championship game live from Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
- 2:38:28Don Crickie and Bob Crumby bringing you all the action right after this one.
- 2:38:31And then after the game, you'll have a chance to talk with Crum by calling 1-800-NFL LIVE.
- 2:38:36So keep your dial tuned to the NFL and NBC.
- 2:38:39And now in this situation, I just noticed that Cleveland put 10 men up on the line of scrimmage.
- 2:38:43I think they're going to come after this one.
- 2:38:47By Coran standing at the two-yard line, he's the third putter used by the Broncos this year.
- 2:38:55The grounds go for the block.
- 2:38:58Coran gets the kick away, a low driving kick.
- 2:39:00McNeil backs up, takes it to the 38 running to his left across the 40, 45, trying to get outside.
- 2:39:05And he's knocked out of bounds rudely along the near sideline to 47-yard line.
- 2:39:09Rick Denison made the tackle, a 44-yard kick by Coran.
- 2:39:14A good field position for the Cleveland Browns.
- 2:39:18A 13-all tie with 640 left in the fourth quarter.
- 2:39:21That's a great field position.
- 2:39:22If you're an offensive unit, you get to start on your own 46, 47-yard line.
- 2:39:26That is a great field position because you only need two or three first downs and you're in field goal position.
- 2:39:33Cleveland's kicking game has given the Browns good field position.
- 2:39:37By contrast, the Broncos have had poor field position most of the day.
- 2:39:41Cleveland begins this drive from the Browns 48.
- 2:39:44Clark Weathers is wide to the left.
- 2:39:47Reggie Langhorn and Herman Fonnell are wide to the right.
- 2:39:49Kevin Max is the lone setback.
- 2:39:52The tight end Holt moves to the left side of the right.
- 2:39:57Bernie Kozler takes the snap, drops back to throw, swings it out of the backfield.
- 2:40:01And Mack who drops it.
- 2:40:04And it's incomplete at the 40-yard line.
- 2:40:06A little swing pass to Kevin Max.
- 2:40:08Ricky Hundley was right there in coverage for the Denver Broncos.
- 2:40:14Now Bernie Kozler has to go downfield.
- 2:40:16It's second down and 10.
- 2:40:18Again, almost a sure pass in situation.
- 2:40:20He has to go down and pick up that 10 yards.
- 2:40:22You just can't squander these opportunities.
- 2:40:24When you get great field position like this, you've got to capitalize on it.
- 2:40:27You've got to move down in your opponent's field.
- 2:40:29You can't keep on trading punches.
- 2:40:31This is time for a knockout punch for Cleveland.
- 2:40:34Now Gerald McNeil is in as a wide receiver.
- 2:40:36He was a great receiver in the USFL with Houston.
- 2:40:39He had 58 catches for over 1,000 yards in 1985.
- 2:40:43Four wide receivers in the game for the Browns.
- 2:40:46On second and 10, Kozler on a draw.
- 2:40:48Hans Sifantino running to his right to midfield, lowers his head, drives forward to the 48-yard line.
- 2:40:54Tackled by Simon Fletcher as the Browns try to cross up the Broncos for the draw play.
- 2:41:01One of the things, of course, is getting darker here.
- 2:41:03It's getting colder.
- 2:41:04And I look down there, Kozler's got his hand inside his jersey trying to keep those fingers warm.
- 2:41:09Fish on that passing hand.
- 2:41:10Bernie Kozler has completed 15 of 29 passes for 200 yards.
- 2:41:14He's been intercepted twice.
- 2:41:19And it's also going to touch down fast.
- 2:41:21And the
- 2:41:24out wide to the right, along with another receiver, Brennan.
- 2:41:27And Weathers has put to the near side.
- 2:41:29Back goes Kozler.
- 2:41:30Looks to his left, firing long down field for Brennan.
- 2:41:33And it's caught at the 15.
- 2:41:35Down the sidelines to the 10.
- 2:41:37Five.
- 2:41:38Upside down.
- 2:41:46And Brennan had to come back and get the ball that made the catch at the 15, broke away from Dennis Smith, and took it in for a touchdown to give the Cleveland Browns a lead.
- 2:41:55Now that's the knockout punch that the Cleveland Browns needed.
- 2:41:59They needed to go deep.
- 2:42:01Kozler comes down.
- 2:42:02He throws that ball way high in the air.
- 2:42:04Now, he's a defender.
- 2:42:05He loses sight of it.
- 2:42:07Brennan doesn't lose sight of it.
- 2:42:08He turns back.
- 2:42:09He turns back to his left.
- 2:42:10Turns back to his right.
- 2:42:11Kicks up the ball.
- 2:42:12Comes down with.
- 2:42:13Oh, boy, the biggest catch he's had in a long time.
- 2:42:16Solid-dash with that.
- 2:42:19And this fell out crowd of over 80,000 is going wild as Mark Mosley's prepared to kick the conversion out of Jeff Gossett's hold.
- 2:42:28The Browns lead it 19 to 13 on a 48-yard touchdown throw by Kozler.
- 2:42:32Mosley's pick is good.
- 2:42:36The Cleveland Browns have taken the lead.
- 2:42:38They're 20 to 13 over the Denver Broncos in this AFC Championship game.
- 2:42:44And you've got to believe, and that's what Cleveland does.
- 2:42:46They believe in the ability of Bernie Kozler.
- 2:42:49He threw that ball up really just for grabs.
- 2:42:52Because Brennan was able to come back and find it, he had the vision to look back.
- 2:42:55He knew the pass was intended for him.
- 2:42:57He looked back and found it, came down with a big catch.
- 2:42:59And they are raining dog biscuits in the end zone.
- 2:43:02And they must have about 40 or 50 security there trying to keep the dog ball biscuit thing.
- 2:43:07Fluttering up the field.
- 2:43:09It's amazing the number of dog bones biscuits that are being thrown all over this place.
- 2:43:16They're going wild in the dog town now.
- 2:43:18Two great young quarterbacks, Bernie Kozler and John Elway.
- 2:43:21Two different styles.
- 2:43:23Elway very mobile, a good scramble, a powerful throwing arm.
- 2:43:26Kozler is not mobile, doesn't run well, has an orthodox throwing style.
- 2:43:32He's a fight armor.
- 2:43:33His father said that he started coaching Bernie when he was a young kid.
- 2:43:37He said when he first started with him, he had picture perfect form.
- 2:43:40He threw over the top.
- 2:43:41Said he reminded him of Terry Bradshaw and his dad Bernie Phoenix.
- 2:43:44Said, oh it took me two years to get him throwing sidearm.
- 2:43:46I lost him up.
- 2:43:47Well, you know, everybody talks about the great class of 83 for the quarterback.
- 2:43:51And Bernie Kozler this year is 4-0 versus those quarterbacks.
- 2:43:55He's one of those class of 83 quarterbacks, but he's not in that class.
- 2:44:01It's 20-13 Cleveland with 5-43 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- 2:44:06Ken Bell and Gene Lang are back deep for the Denver Broncos, awaiting Mark Mosley's kickoff.
- 2:44:12The Cleveland Browns who last won an NFL championship in 1964.
- 2:44:16Here's Mosley's kickoff.
- 2:44:18A short kick.
- 2:44:19It'll hit at the 15-yard line, rolling inside the 10 to the 5.
- 2:44:23And the Broncos will have Ken Bell fall on the 2-yard line.
- 2:44:26And he's buried by about 6 Cleveland Browns.
- 2:44:29D.D. Hoggart is the first man to get to him along with Mark Harper.
- 2:44:33And they've been outstanding on the special team.
- 2:44:36Gene Lang is shaken up for Denver.
- 2:44:39Broncos will have the ball between the 1 and the 2-yard line.
- 2:44:43What a play.
- 2:44:45Mosley, when he kicked that ball off, it was like it looked as if it was almost a knuckleball coming off his shoe.
- 2:44:50And Lang could never find the ball.
- 2:44:52It wasn't Lang.
- 2:44:54But he said, Steve, I could never find the ball.
- 2:44:57And the ball just kind of fluttered.
- 2:44:59And when it got down to the 2-yard line, all he could do was fall on it.
- 2:45:02Bell was trying to pick it up.
- 2:45:03Lang was going to block for him.
- 2:45:04And Lang kind of turned his head, just as he did, about 3 Browns buried him.
- 2:45:09Denver begins this drive between the 1 and the 2-yard line.
- 2:45:12John Elway is going to throw out of the end zone, swings it out on the left flat to Sandy Winder.
- 2:45:16And he's written out a foul for the 8-yard line by Hanford Dixon.
- 2:45:20What pressure on John Elway to be on his own 2-yard line.
- 2:45:23It shows you his great confidence to throw the ball.
- 2:45:26You're on your own 2-yard line.
- 2:45:28Most quarterbacks, 9 out of 10, would try to run the ball out there and get that better field position.
- 2:45:33Elway comes up throwing the ball.
- 2:45:34Great confidence in his throwing ability.
- 2:45:37Game of 5, the second and 5, and the 7.
- 2:45:39Steve Watson and Mark Vance Johnson are wide to the right.
- 2:45:43Two tight ends in the game for the Broncos.
- 2:45:46K and Mobley.
- 2:45:48Winders alone setback.
- 2:45:50Vance Johnson is in motion.
- 2:45:51Elway on the pitch.
- 2:45:52The winder running to his right.
- 2:45:54Elway is off to 5, cuts back, right forward.
- 2:45:56He's dropped out the 9-yard line by Reggie Camp.
- 2:45:59Again, it's 2 yards.
- 2:46:04It'll be 3rd down and 3.
- 2:46:08Actually, 3rd down and 2 as they mark his forward progress to the 10.
- 2:46:11Winders carried 18 times for 59 yards.
- 2:46:14And now the Cleveland Browns have got to be aware that Elway can scramble with the ball.
- 2:46:19He may pass it, he may run it.
- 2:46:21He drops back to pass, I think he's going to call time out to think about it.
- 2:46:24The Broncos have 3 timeouts left and they'll use one here.
- 2:46:31What happens on that play, Mel, is that Elway, when he drops back, he's such a great running quarterback.
- 2:46:37He's got that great average that he can step up through the scene and pick up that 1st down by running.
- 2:46:42That's something that Cozart does not have the ability to do.
- 2:46:45Or he can just hand the ball off the winder and hope they pick up 2 or 3 yards going wide.
- 2:46:49This is an awfully big play from John Elway.
- 2:46:52If they don't make it, they'll barely be able to punt out past midfield.
- 2:46:56Another Super Bowl here on NBC Radio from Pasadena, California.
- 2:47:00That's on January the 25th beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern Time of the pregame show.
- 2:47:04Hosted by Bob Costas and Don Crickie and Bob Crumpey will bring you all the play-by-play.
- 2:47:08And after the game, 1-800-NFL-LIVE is the number to call to talk football on the NFL Live.
- 2:47:15John Elway has completed 15 of 47 passes for 122 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception.
- 2:47:21The attendance this afternoon, 79,958, 953, 79953.
- 2:47:28There are only 58 no-shows.
- 2:47:30I think all of Cleveland is here today.
- 2:47:33There's a lot of people and they're all dressed in orange.
- 2:47:36Cleveland Brown's orange, that is.
- 2:47:39Each team has 2 timeouts left, 4-17 remaining in the 4th quarter.
- 2:47:43Cleveland leading 20 to 13.
- 2:47:46I'd like to thank our fighters, Chuck Day and Marty Schengler and our statistician, Don Dribble, for their help this afternoon.
- 2:47:53Here come the Broncos, moving left to right, a big down here.
- 2:47:57Third down and 2 at the 10-yard line.
- 2:47:59Will Hyke and the winder, the running back.
- 2:48:01These two, there's a motion from a wing right.
- 2:48:04Elway on a handoff, the winder grinding out, across the 10, close to a first down.
- 2:48:10They need it 2 yards, looks like he's got it.
- 2:48:14Oh, it's going to be close.
- 2:48:15Oh, it's going to be close.
- 2:48:16Oh, I think that's real close.
- 2:48:17They may have to measure this one.
- 2:48:19The Broncos are indicating they've got it.
- 2:48:20The Browns are saying, no, he's a foot short.
- 2:48:24They will measure.
- 2:48:26It's awfully close.
- 2:48:28What a big play.
- 2:48:30I was surprised by that call.
- 2:48:31They just ran a quick hold in the middle.
- 2:48:33It's almost like a trap where the center and the guard kind of exchange positions.
- 2:48:37One fires out, the other one fires behind him.
- 2:48:39They try to split the defense.
- 2:48:41He didn't make it by much if, in fact, he did make it.
- 2:48:45They stretch out the chain.
- 2:48:49And it's a first down.
- 2:48:51By less than the length of a football.
- 2:48:55First down for Denver at the 11-yard line.
- 2:48:58A long way to go with 411 left and the Broncos trailing by 7 points.
- 2:49:03The Browns have taken a deep throw away from Elway this afternoon.
- 2:49:08Steve Watson is wide to the left.
- 2:49:12Too tight into the game for the Broncos.
- 2:49:14Vance Johnson, the slot left.
- 2:49:16He comes in motion.
- 2:49:20Elway on the handoff to Winder straight ahead off left tackle.
- 2:49:23Stacked up at a 15-yard line.
- 2:49:25Does this play selection surprise you a little, Dave?
- 2:49:28Absolutely.
- 2:49:29I think he ran head on into Anthony Griggs.
- 2:49:31Just right face to face.
- 2:49:33And I'm thinking it's time for Elway to throw the ball up in the air.
- 2:49:36That's the way that he moves the ball effectively.
- 2:49:38And he's not doing it.
- 2:49:40He's trying to run.
- 2:49:41He used the clock up.
- 2:49:42I don't know why he'd want to use the clock up.
- 2:49:44There's only 3 minutes and 39 seconds left.
- 2:49:46And it's counting down.
- 2:49:47It's time to go to the air show for John Elway.
- 2:49:49And he's got to go 85 yards to tie it.
- 2:49:54Second down and 7 from the Broncos.
- 2:49:5615.
- 2:49:57Sewell and Wilhite are in the backfield.
- 2:50:00Elway back to throw.
- 2:50:02Getting some pressure.
- 2:50:03Scrambling to his left across the 10 of the 15, 20, and dives forward to the 26.
- 2:50:08The ball pops loose, but Elway recovers immediately.
- 2:50:11And it's the first down for Denver.
- 2:50:13Mike Johnson was there to make the tackle.
- 2:50:15It looks like the Broncos will line up without a huddle.
- 2:50:17We're under 3, just about under 3 minutes.
- 2:50:21They gain to the 25-yard line.
- 2:50:26Cleveland leading 20 to 13.
- 2:50:28It's a fast Friday advance to the Super Bowl to meet the winner of today's game
- 2:50:31between the Giants and the Redskins.
- 2:50:33Steve Watson's foot out wide to the right, picked up by Frank Minnifield.
- 2:50:39Sewell was in the backfield with Wilhite.
- 2:50:41Elway with a play-action fake.
- 2:50:43Back to throw.
- 2:50:44Fires over the middle.
- 2:50:45He's got Steve Sewell making a leaping catch at the 49-yard line.
- 2:50:49And it's the first down for the Broncos near midfield.
- 2:50:52Chris Rockins really drilled Sewell, but he made the catch.
- 2:50:55Sewell's got those great hands.
- 2:50:57He can play both wide receiver and he can play a back running back.
- 2:51:00He's alternated between it all season long.
- 2:51:02He runs down the center of the field.
- 2:51:04And Elway with that rocket for an arm just drilled the ball to him.
- 2:51:07That was a chunky yardage.
- 2:51:08Now they're almost down to the 50s.
- 2:51:10Sewell did not catch many passes in college.
- 2:51:12He was part of a wishbone attack at Oklahoma.
- 2:51:15Back goes Elway on first down from the 48.
- 2:51:17Look to his right.
- 2:51:18Guns are passed to the near sideline.
- 2:51:20It's caught at the 40-yard line by Steve Watson.
- 2:51:22He's hit there by Frank Minnifield.
- 2:51:25But Elway has the Broncos moving as we get to the 2-minute mark.
- 2:51:29And that's the 2-minute warning, but there'll be no warning when the lights go out.
- 2:51:33Keep an Ever-Ready flashlight close at hand.
- 2:51:36More power to look, more power to say.
- 2:51:42More power to play, more power to sing and sing.
- 2:51:48We sing today.
- 2:51:52Ever-Ready, more power to the USA.
- 2:51:57Ever-Ready makes every kind of flashlight for every kind of need.
- 2:52:00More power to the USA.
- 2:52:05Billy, in this scene you enter the bar, order a beer, then...
- 2:52:08My character is a man who won't settle for less than the best.
- 2:52:12He'd ask for Bud Light.
- 2:52:13Billy, sweetie, boobie.
- 2:52:14Bud Light's the light beer with a first name in days.
- 2:52:17Charlie, Bud Light behind the bar.
- 2:52:19I am the stickler for authenticity.
- 2:52:21Ask for Bud Light because everything else is just a light.
- 2:52:24Take one and action.
- 2:52:25Or keep Bud Light.
- 2:52:27Yes, General Washington.
- 2:52:28How's Valley Forge?
- 2:52:29Those redcoats are a nasty lot.
- 2:52:31Cut beautiful.
- 2:52:32Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 2:52:35Mel Proctor with Dave Rowe back at Cleveland Stadium with John Elway.
- 2:52:39How's the Denver Broncos moving down to the Cleveland 40-yard line with 2 minutes left?
- 2:52:43Both teams have 2 timeouts remaining.
- 2:52:46Cleveland leads 20 to 13.
- 2:52:48Shades of the Fiesta Ball, Mel, that's what teams like.
- 2:52:51We had the great Vinnie Testaverde and we were there and they drove down the length of the field.
- 2:52:55It's just what it's like.
- 2:52:56Came down to one play.
- 2:52:57Came down to one play.
- 2:52:58That's what this game looks as if it's coming down to.
- 2:53:00Elway's got his team moving.
- 2:53:01He's moved from inside his own 2-yard line.
- 2:53:04He's now down on Cleveland's 40-yard line.
- 2:53:06And he is throwing rockets out there for passes.
- 2:53:09Dimension 20 is the magic number for Denver.
- 2:53:11When they've scored 20 or more points, they've gone 12-0.
- 2:53:15When they've scored less than 20, they're 0-5.
- 2:53:18For the Browns, when they've scored 20 or more, they are 11-1.
- 2:53:21And right now they lead 20 to 13.
- 2:53:24Now what happened if both teams scored 20?
- 2:53:26Did you ever...
- 2:53:27Overtime.
- 2:53:28Overtime is right.
- 2:53:30The Browns with a double overtime last week against the Jets, the third longest game in NFL history.
- 2:53:36Steve Watson and Vance Johnson split out wide to the far side.
- 2:53:40Will Highton's tool was split behind Elway.
- 2:53:43He dropped back.
- 2:53:44A deep drop to midfield.
- 2:53:45Steps up to elude his stock, throws long downfield, and it's incomplete as he tried to hit Vance Johnson along the near sideline at the 5-yard line.
- 2:53:56I'll tell you, this is gut time now.
- 2:53:57I can tell you what it's like as a player to be down there.
- 2:53:59If you're a defensive player, every play is the most important play.
- 2:54:03You don't want to let them score.
- 2:54:05You realize that...
- 2:54:06I mean, everything rides on this.
- 2:54:07This is a trip to the Super Bowl.
- 2:54:09You've played for 20 weeks.
- 2:54:11You've been practicing.
- 2:54:12You've been playing.
- 2:54:13It's down to a minute 52 seconds.
- 2:54:15If you're a defensive player, I'll tell you, you dig deep and you tell the character of your team right now if you're defensive.
- 2:54:20The same thing is true on offense.
- 2:54:22You've got to drive the ball down.
- 2:54:23Every catch is so important.
- 2:54:25Every block is vital.
- 2:54:26Wow, it's just tremendous football time.
- 2:54:29Second down and 10 for the Denver Broncos with the Cleveland 40-yard line.
- 2:54:33Vance Johnson splits to the right.
- 2:54:35Steve Watson is wide left.
- 2:54:36Back goes Elway.
- 2:54:37Getting pressure, and he is going to be shot.
- 2:54:40Elway dropped by Dave Pizzulli at the 49-yard line.
- 2:54:46A loss of 9 yards on the play.
- 2:54:53Denver is going to have to call a timeout to stop the clock with a minute 47 seconds left.
- 2:54:57That leaves them one timeout.
- 2:55:01The Broncos call a timeout with a minute 47 remaining and Cleveland leading 20 to 13.
- 2:55:07You love Vicks Vitamin C drops. They're new.
- 2:55:10A delicious new Vitamin C for you.
- 2:55:13Great orange taste mixed with Vitamin C from Vicks.
- 2:55:17Vicks Vitamin C drops melt in your mouth for a delicious new way to get your full daily allowance of Vitamin C.
- 2:55:23If Vitamin C is what you lack, try Vitamin C drops in bag or pack.
- 2:55:28Great orange taste mixed with Vitamin C from Vicks.
- 2:55:32Vitamin C drops from Vicks, of course.
- 2:55:35Dave Pizzulli sacked John Elway for a 9-yard loss.
- 2:55:41It will be third in 18 from the 48-yard line.
- 2:55:43Pizzulli has replaced Bob Golick in those tackles.
- 2:55:47Pizzulli is normally in there against the run.
- 2:55:49That's having a passing situation. He comes up with a sack.
- 2:55:52Golick is hurt.
- 2:55:53Golick came to the sideline, bent over.
- 2:55:55What a big play for John Elway and company.
- 2:55:57I would look for him, probably go to Watson.
- 2:55:59He's probably going to try a curl play to try to pick up about 12, 15 yards.
- 2:56:03They need 18 yards for a first down.
- 2:56:08The grounds have six defensive backs in the game now.
- 2:56:12Of course, he can scramble if he's able to step up through there with that great speed he has.
- 2:56:17He can scramble.
- 2:56:18It may be the biggest down of the game.
- 2:56:21Cleveland leads by seven with a minute 47 left.
- 2:56:25The Broncos have got to convert this third down situation and it's third in 18 from the Cleveland 48.
- 2:56:32John Elway who is tied or broken 13 Denver passing records.
- 2:56:43Only 11 yards away from Greg Morton's career total of 11,895 yards.
- 2:56:49He's won 34 regular season games over the last three years.
- 2:56:53Only Dan Marino from Miami has won as many.
- 2:56:56Shotgun formation on third in 18.
- 2:56:59He's lost it in motion, a bad snap, but Elway takes it, drops back, fires over the middle and it's caught.
- 2:57:08They've got the 30 yard line by Mark Jackson.
- 2:57:11He's driven back and it'll be interesting to see what they mark his forward progress.
- 2:57:14Looks like he's got the first down.
- 2:57:15He does.
- 2:57:16And Mark is forward progress about the 28.
- 2:57:19Denver will line up without a huddle with a minute 27 left.
- 2:57:22First down for the Broncos at the 28.
- 2:57:24Back goes Elway.
- 2:57:25Looks to his right and throws it out of bounds to stop the clock.
- 2:57:29He doesn't want to have to use the timeout.
- 2:57:32He's trying to get Watson to go down the sideline and just kind of slow down thinking that he was going to go out and then speed up.
- 2:57:38But Watson was well covered.
- 2:57:40It's just awfully hard to attack against these cornerbacks.
- 2:57:43Minnifield and Dixon, they just take it away from them.
- 2:57:46They're the top dogs so to speak on this dog defense.
- 2:57:49And now they're going into that end zone where the dog pound is.
- 2:57:53And you know the bones are going to rain coming out of there.
- 2:57:57Lance Johnson, the Broncos, said he'd heard about Cleveland Stadium.
- 2:58:00They're looking forward to 80,000 fans.
- 2:58:02Looks up like dogs howling and barking.
- 2:58:05Barking is just got to be a little frightening.
- 2:58:06They're driving right toward the dog pound.
- 2:58:08You can hear them howl from way up here in the press box.
- 2:58:10Back goes Elway on second and ten.
- 2:58:12A screen pass to Sewell across the 30.
- 2:58:1525, 20.
- 2:58:16Cups back to the 15 and down to the 14 yard line.
- 2:58:19With a minute nine left.
- 2:58:21He's given Denver a first down.
- 2:58:24Cleveland leading 20 to 13.
- 2:58:26The Broncos try to line up without a huddle again as they move to change.
- 2:58:30First down at the 14 yard line.
- 2:58:32Elway will stay in the shotgun.
- 2:58:34He's got it going now.
- 2:58:35He throws it into the end zone for Watson who makes a leaping grab.
- 2:58:38And he's knocked out of bounds.
- 2:58:40He made the catch out of bounds.
- 2:58:43Well, I thought I saw a flag.
- 2:58:44That may have been something that was thrown from the end zone.
- 2:58:46I think it was a bone or something thrown from the end zone.
- 2:58:49I thought it was a flag for a second.
- 2:58:51It's a dog biscuit.
- 2:58:52No, it was a big dog biscuit.
- 2:58:56Those are big dogs.
- 2:58:58Well, you hate to see that now.
- 2:59:00You know, in fairness to the game, you don't want something like that thrown out when a wide receiver is going out for a pass.
- 2:59:06It looks like a kennel down around the 10 yard line.
- 2:59:08There are dog bones and biscuits all over the field.
- 2:59:11Second and tenth in the 14 yard line.
- 2:59:15Four wide receivers in the game for Denver.
- 2:59:18Elway drops back.
- 2:59:20Now he's going to run, running to his right across the 15 and the 10, slides out of bounds at the five yard line.
- 2:59:27Mike Johnson chased him out of bounds.
- 2:59:29Forty-two seconds left.
- 2:59:31And he may have gotten the first down.
- 2:59:33I don't know.
- 2:59:34It's going to be awfully close.
- 2:59:36He's right at the five yard line.
- 2:59:37I think he had to go to about the four, Mel.
- 2:59:39Maybe the four and a half.
- 2:59:40It may be third down at about a foot.
- 2:59:45John Elway has rushed for 58 yards this afternoon.
- 2:59:49It'll be third down and one at the five.
- 2:59:53Forty-two seconds left.
- 2:59:54Denver has one timeout left.
- 2:59:58Dan Johnson is wide to the left.
- 3:00:00Steve Watson is wide to the right along with Sampson and Jackson.
- 3:00:03Four wide receivers.
- 3:00:05Elway from the shotgun.
- 3:00:07Backpedals looking.
- 3:00:08Fires into the end zone.
- 3:00:09It's caught for a touchdown by Mark Jackson.
- 3:00:13And I smell overtime as debris comes flying out of the dog pound.
- 3:00:18Jackson, the rookie from Purdue, making a great catch and a slant over the middle in front of Chris Rockin.
- 3:00:23And now what a throw by John Elway.
- 3:00:26Give him some credit for that throw.
- 3:00:28That was an unbelievable throw.
- 3:00:30He sees Johnson when he makes that cut, and I mean he throws that thing just,
- 3:00:34it took no time at all for that ball to get there.
- 3:00:36If you don't get it, it's going to stick in you.
- 3:00:38Rich Carless is never going to have a bigger kick than this.
- 3:00:41The Elway company drove 99 yards on that drive.
- 3:00:44That shows the character of the Denver Broncos.
- 3:00:46Yeah, it could be actual hold for Rich Carless as he attempts to tie it at 20.
- 3:00:51There's the snap.
- 3:00:52The ball is spotted down and Carless' kick is good.
- 3:00:55The Denver Broncos have tied it up.
- 3:00:58John Elway throwing a touchdown pass to Mark Jackson.
- 3:01:02Thomas conversion ties it at 20 with 37 seconds left.
- 3:01:05And now a fight breaks out down near the 15-yard line.
- 3:01:08Penalty marches are flying and they're getting into it pretty good.
- 3:01:12We've got several fights.
- 3:01:13I see one about the 5-yard line.
- 3:01:15A couple guys holding each other.
- 3:01:17Oh boy.
- 3:01:18Well, this is usually the one where personal foul on the offense,
- 3:01:21personal foul on the defense, and nobody suffers.
- 3:01:24Ken Lanier of the Broncos is mixing it up with Chris Rockins
- 3:01:27and a couple of other Browns.
- 3:01:31The Broncos drove downfield right into the dog pound and put it in for 699 yards.
- 3:01:37That was an unbelievable drive.
- 3:01:39And there were two or three plays on that drive that were just critical plays.
- 3:01:43Third downs where they picked up, remember the one that they picked up
- 3:01:46around the 20-yard line, 18-20-yard line, which they made by the length of a football.
- 3:01:50A 14-play, 99-yard drive.
- 3:01:54Elway with a 5-yard toss to Mark Jackson.
- 3:01:58And we're tied at 20 with 37 seconds left.
- 3:02:00Cleveland has two timeouts remaining.
- 3:02:04If you're the Denver Broncos, you do not want to kick to the dangerous kick returner
- 3:02:10that Cleveland has, Gerald McNeil.
- 3:02:12You just want to kick the ball to him.
- 3:02:15He can return.
- 3:02:16Of course, he has returned one all the way.
- 3:02:18So you're going to probably want to squib the ball on the ground,
- 3:02:20not give him a chance.
- 3:02:22Gerald McNeil is the first man in the NFL to return a punt and a kickoff
- 3:02:25or touchdown since Tony Green of the Redskins in 1978.
- 3:02:28Number 31 on the offense, on the white.
- 3:02:32Number 57 on the orange.
- 3:02:34They were off-set.
- 3:02:36Off-setting penalties.
- 3:02:38I love that call.
- 3:02:40And almost every time there's a fight, it's always a personal foul on the offense,
- 3:02:44personal foul on defense, and they negate each other.
- 3:02:49What you do is you make sure the guy swings back at you if you take the swing at him.
- 3:02:54John Elway at his best on that touchdown drive.
- 3:02:57That's why he has the talent that he's going to the Pro Bowl.
- 3:03:00That's why he has that ability.
- 3:03:02Of course, Bernie Cotar is, well, I guess you could say understudy a little bit age-wise.
- 3:03:08He's got the ability to do the same thing with the Cleveland Browns.
- 3:03:11He did it last week.
- 3:03:12They were down 10 points, less than four minutes.
- 3:03:14He drove down the field twice, scored a field goal and a touchdown,
- 3:03:17or excuse me, a touchdown, then a field goal to tie, took him in overtime and won.
- 3:03:21So this is everything that we expected this game to be.
- 3:03:25Rich Carlos is set to kick off with 37 seconds left.
- 3:03:30Gerald McNeil, Reggie Langhorn, Herman Fontaner are back deep for Cleveland.
- 3:03:34McNeil, the deepest of the three, standing at the sixth.
- 3:03:36He picks up a dog bone and moves it.
- 3:03:38He won't slip on it if he prepares to run one back.
- 3:03:41Carlos hooks the kick headed toward the far sidelines, and it's out of bounds.
- 3:03:51A penalty coming up against Denver.
- 3:03:54Now, you know what's interesting about right now is that the wind has just about died off down on the field.
- 3:03:59I'm looking at the flags on the top of the goal post.
- 3:04:01I think it's blowing every considerable direction today and we really have not been consistent.
- 3:04:05So maybe it's taking a breather.
- 3:04:07But anyway, if they can get this field goal, this kick is going to be kicked five yards farther back.
- 3:04:12If McNeil can get good field position, Cozart can pick up a couple quick passes with 37 seconds.
- 3:04:18They may get a shot with Mark Mosley kicking a long field goal.
- 3:04:21He's got a great leg and we know that we talked about his consistency.
- 3:04:24He has kicked field goals over 50 yards consistently and we might get a shot now.
- 3:04:30Well, he didn't have much luck from beyond 40 yards this year.
- 3:04:33He had no attempts from 50 yards or beyond.
- 3:04:36It was one for five from 40 to 49 yards.
- 3:04:38He doesn't kick the long field goal as well as he did earlier in his career.
- 3:04:42Carlos with a line drive kick.
- 3:04:43McNeil runs up the field and it gets by him rolling inside the 10, still trying to pick it up.
- 3:04:48He's got it at the 5, off to the 10, heading for the near sidelines.
- 3:04:51He's pushed out of bounds at the 14-yard line by Randy Robbins.
- 3:04:5531 seconds left.
- 3:04:56The Browns have two timeouts remaining.
- 3:04:58Of course, I was referring to that half the history that he had had.
- 3:05:02I remember he made several kicks over 50 yards,
- 3:05:05but I think that kick just took the chance of a field goal attempt out of the realm of this game.
- 3:05:11We're going to go to overtime with 30 seconds left.
- 3:05:13The longest field goal of Mark Mosley's career, a 54-yarder 10 years ago against Philadelphia.
- 3:05:18Let's pause five seconds for station identification.
- 3:05:2125 degrees at 3 o'clock.
- 3:05:23This is 67 W&A-Q Radio in Chicago.
- 3:05:29Here come the Browns, moving right to left to begin the drive at their own 15.
- 3:05:33Three wide receivers to the right side.
- 3:05:36Bernie Kozars back to throw, setting up at the 5, a screen pass to Herman Fano.
- 3:05:41Fano slips a tackle to 15.
- 3:05:43He's dragged down the 19-yard line.
- 3:05:45He wanted to get out of bounds, but was tackled by Freddie Gilbert and Simon Fletcher.
- 3:05:49And Cleveland will call a timeout with 21 seconds left.
- 3:05:51I love Cleveland.
- 3:05:52Boy, that surprises me.
- 3:05:54I'm going to be honest with you.
- 3:05:55That surprises me.
- 3:05:56You've got 80 yards to go.
- 3:05:58You've got a long way.
- 3:05:59You've only got 21 seconds.
- 3:06:00The chances of you getting within field goal range are slim, and they call a timeout.
- 3:06:05I don't think my chances of having a good kickoff or holding the team down there was my good defense.
- 3:06:11There's too many things that can go wrong for an offensive unit, a fumble, a missed handoff, a bad snap.
- 3:06:17There's just too many little things that can cause you a headache down this far down in your own territory.
- 3:06:22But I don't know if there have ever been a playoff where we've had two overtime games by the same team.
- 3:06:27I can't remember that happening.
- 3:06:29My mind raced back.
- 3:06:30Of course, I remember the Raiders won that we had several years ago.
- 3:06:33I don't remember having one team go through back-to-back overtime games in the playoffs.
- 3:06:38The Browns last week went double overtime to beat the Jets on a Mark Mosley field goal.
- 3:06:44We're tied at 20 with 21 seconds left.
- 3:06:46Each team has one timeout remaining.
- 3:06:53Two great young quarterbacks hooked up in a shootout here at Cleveland Stadium, Bernie Kozar and John Elway.
- 3:07:01Second down at six for the Browns, the 19-yard line.
- 3:07:08Two tight ends and it looks like they're just going to run it out, Dave, the way they're lining up.
- 3:07:12That's what I would do.
- 3:07:13That's what they'll do, just going to run it out and go to overtime.
- 3:07:16Kozar takes the snap and drops down to one knee.
- 3:07:18They don't want to risk any sort of turnover or interception here near their own goal line.
- 3:07:22They're just going to run it out.
- 3:07:24I think Denver's going to use their last time out here.
- 3:07:26That's what I was going to say. It's foolish for them to try and run this block in this situation.
- 3:07:32Foolish for them to try to run that long ball.
- 3:07:34Too many things can happen. You can get an interception, you can get a fumble.
- 3:07:37You're back inside your own 10-yard line.
- 3:07:39If you turn the ball over here, they've got a free kick and a field goal try and they're not far back.
- 3:07:43You've just got everything against you.
- 3:07:45I think that's what Marty Schottenheimer came up with.
- 3:07:47The Broncos have used their last timeout.
- 3:07:52Bernie Kozar has completed 17 of 32 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown pass has intercepted twice.
- 3:08:03Well, we'll have an overtime ferret or so it appears.
- 3:08:06And then after this game is completed, whenever that might be,
- 3:08:08remember the Redskins and the Giants will be coming along from East Rutherford, New Jersey
- 3:08:12with Don Cricky and Bob Crumpy.
- 3:08:14All will be followed by the NFL Live here on NBC Radio.
- 3:08:18And now I know if we get to that other game for our fans out there listening,
- 3:08:21we'll keep you updated on that other game.
- 3:08:23I'm sure we can flip back and forth. Maybe we can go to Bob Crumpy and Don Cricky.
- 3:08:28We don't want our fans to not miss that game, but we've got an exciting one here, 20-20 with 11 seconds left.
- 3:08:38The Blouse is up to the line of scrimmage, 11 seconds left.
- 3:08:42Bernie Kozar will take the snap and wind down the final 11 seconds and will head for overtime.
- 3:08:50Bernie drops to one knee and that should do it.
- 3:08:53Now what we do now is we'll have a three-minute intermission at the end of the regular game
- 3:08:57and we'll continue with 15-minute periods and you'll have two-minute intermissions between us.
- 3:09:01So we've got an overtime game.
- 3:09:03Thank you, Art McNally.
- 3:09:05I just read that in the book.
- 3:09:07So at the end of regulation, this AFC Championship game, the Denver Broncos and the Cleveland Browns are tied 20-20.
- 3:09:14This is the NFL on NBC.
- 3:09:16Cleveland Browns have won this class and are elected to receive to begin this overtime period to score tied 20-20.
- 3:09:23And right now let's go to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey as the Redskins and the Giants are getting underway as we throw you to Don Cricky and Bob Crumpy.
- 3:09:31Thank you, Mel. They are underway here at Giants Stadium on an unseasonably mild day from a temperature standpoint,
- 3:09:37but there is an enormous wind that's going to play havoc with both teams.
- 3:09:40The Giants have just stopped the Redskins three downs and out for the Washington offense, a punt into the wind.
- 3:09:45It was downed on the Redskins side of the field.
- 3:09:48Now the Giants are set to go first and 10 at their 48-yard line, a scoreless first quarter.
- 3:09:53The Giants with their first possession, Bill Thimbs dropping to throw.
- 3:09:57He's looking long. The wind at his back and it's overthrown.
- 3:09:59So that's the first play for the Giants.
- 3:10:01We'll be coming back to Giants Stadium with this NFC Championship game after things conclude in Cleveland with overtime.
- 3:10:08Here's Mel Proctor.
- 3:10:10All right. Thank you.
- 3:10:11Down on the sidelines, Bernie Kosar is warming up. Score tied 20-20.
- 3:10:16As we go to overtime, the Browns winning the toss.
- 3:10:19They'll be receiving and defending the west goal.
- 3:10:22The Broncos will kick off and defend the east goal.
- 3:10:28And right now it appears that the Browns will be moving into the wind, against the wind on this drive.
- 3:10:34I think they want the dog pound advantage.
- 3:10:36They want to be, they want to have the dog pound at their back.
- 3:10:39But it's really important right now that they catch this ball on the run, get good field position by McNeil,
- 3:10:44get it out to about the 35-yard line so that they can start their drive.
- 3:10:48You don't want to fumble this ball down here, then get held and have to punt the ball from deep in your own territory.
- 3:10:54Browns have got an advantage right now.
- 3:10:56They've got the ball. They've got the, they've got momentum going their way.
- 3:11:00They've got the crowd behind them.
- 3:11:01And they want to keep this, sustain this drive and get it going.
- 3:11:04So it was tied 10-10 at the half. Rich Carlos kicked a 26-yard field goal for Denver in the third quarter to give the Broncos a 13-10 lead.
- 3:11:11Then Mark Mosley booted a 26-yarder for Cleveland to tie it at 13.
- 3:11:16The Browns took the lead on a 48-yard pass and Bernie Kozar, Bruce Brennan, to go up 20-13.
- 3:11:23And then the Broncos with an incredible drive, beginning from their one-yard line.
- 3:11:26They drove 99 yards on 14 plays.
- 3:11:29John Elway hit Mark Jackson on a 5-yard touchdown pass and Rich Carlos kicked the extra point,
- 3:11:34tied at 20. The Browns then took the ball in the next possession deep in their own territory and elected to run out the clock to send it into overtime.
- 3:11:45First playoff meeting ever between these two teams.
- 3:11:49Rich Carlos will kick off.
- 3:11:52Dropping back deep for the Cleveland Browns for the Ice Cubes.
- 3:11:57Gerald McNeil standing at the 5-yard line.
- 3:12:00On the far side, Herman Fondo, who's had a big day, is the receiver out of the backfield.
- 3:12:05And on the near side, Reggie Langhorn, a three-year veteran from Elizabeth City State.
- 3:12:09The same school that produced former Eagles quarterback Johnny Walton and former Dallas Cowboys lineman Jeff Roque.
- 3:12:15Play moving right to left as Rich Carlos will get the overtime underway.
- 3:12:25Here's Carlos' kickoff.
- 3:12:27High end over end kick. McNeil moves upfield, takes it to 15 straight ahead of the 20, 25, 30, and he's dropped at the 30-yard line.
- 3:12:35A hard tackle by Ken Woodard of the Denver Broncos.
- 3:12:39And here comes Bernie Kozar.
- 3:12:42Now for young Mr. Kozar, it's important, don't panic, don't try to get it all at one time.
- 3:12:48Move down the far outfield, keep good offensive continuity, use the run a little bit.
- 3:12:52It's a whole new ball game.
- 3:12:54Don't make a mistake. That's what costs overtime victories or losses, I should say.
- 3:12:58It's overtime mistakes where you fumble the ball, throw an interception, get bad field positions.
- 3:13:04Reggie Langhorn is wide to the right.
- 3:13:06Clarence Weathers went out to the far side along with Herman Fontenot. Kevin Mack is the lone back for the Cleveland Browns.
- 3:13:14Kozar will throw on first down, drops back, looks to his left, nothing there.
- 3:13:18Now he's in trouble, scrambles up the middle, and he's stopped at the 31-yard line by Roulon Jones.
- 3:13:24A gain of only a yard.
- 3:13:26I think he kept his great rushing average alive there. He rushed for about.8 yards, which is his season average.
- 3:13:33But he came down, he had to, at least he had the foresight not to force the ball into coverage.
- 3:13:38When he went to those left, it was well covered. He came back to his right, they were well covered.
- 3:13:42He just decided he was going to run the ball.
- 3:13:44A lot of young quarterbacks in experience would have tried to force the ball in there. He did not.
- 3:13:49He's working against the third-best defense in the AFC during the regular season.
- 3:13:54Second down and nine for Kozar.
- 3:13:58Brian Brennan is in motion, back goes Kozar, setting up at the 20, looks right, fires to Brennan.
- 3:14:03And he's pulled out of bounds at the 38-yard line by Tony Lilly.
- 3:14:09Brian Brennan, who had 55 receptions during the regular season, not very big at 5'9", 178, very tough, fearless.
- 3:14:17He'll go over the middle and catch a pass and take a hit. Got great hands.
- 3:14:22Now to be compared in the same breath with Steve Large and shows the ability that he has and the respect that the Cleveland Browns have for him.
- 3:14:29He is that type of a, that type of a player. He can just go down there and it's, like you say, fearless.
- 3:14:35We understand that Raul Alegre has just kicked a 47-yard field goal to give the Giants a 3-0 lead over the Washington Redskins in the AFC Championship game at Giants Stadium.
- 3:14:44Third down, two for the Cleveland Browns at their 38-yard line.
- 3:14:47Kozar on the handoff to Herman Fontenot running to his right and he does not have the first down, stops the line of scrimmage by Carl Mecklenburg.
- 3:14:56A 230-pounder from Minnesota who began his collegiate career at County Augustana College,
- 3:15:02felt that he needed a bigger challenge, transferred to Minnesota, played on a losing team where he was used primarily as a pass rusher,
- 3:15:09and was not selected by Denver until the 12th round of the 1983 draft.
- 3:15:13Jeff Gossett is in to punt. Gerald Willhite is back deep for Denver for the Browns, unable to move on their first drive.
- 3:15:20Gossett's kick is a high kick, short kick. Willhite takes it to 21, trips and stumbles, and he's dropped at the 25-yard line by Felix Wright of Cleveland.
- 3:15:32And now it's John Elway's turn, a 42-yard kick.
- 3:15:38And now Elway has the same problem as Kozar. They both have the same situation. Don't panic.
- 3:15:44There's so many young quarterbacks, and both these are young quarterbacks, even though Elway has a couple more years experience.
- 3:15:49If you get into a situation like this, you haven't been in it, you know the importance of a game.
- 3:15:53Sometimes you try to force the ball, but Elway did so well on that last drive, I don't think he will.
- 3:15:59First time for Denver to Bronco 25. T. Sewell is in motion.
- 3:16:03The Broncos stay on the ground as a handoff goes to Sammy Winder straight ahead to the 30-yard line, a 5-yard pick-up.
- 3:16:13Last week against New England, Elway was forced to go to a running attack in the second half because he sprained his ankle in the first half,
- 3:16:22had difficulty setting up on his throws, had difficulty running himself, so he headed off with running back quite effectively.
- 3:16:28That was the big key that Broncos win. Second and five from the 30.
- 3:16:34Vance Johnson comes in motion. Elway's back to throw on second and five.
- 3:16:43Fires for Orson Mobley, and he makes the grab at midfield for a Denver first down.
- 3:16:49Brought down from behind by Ray Ellis of Cleveland, the big tight end, Orson Mobley, a 256-pound rookie from Salem College.
- 3:16:59Well, a lot of people we've talked in the past about him being compared to Riley Odom, the great tight end for the Denver Broncos.
- 3:17:06He showed why. 256 pounds and he's downfield, 25 yards running, man-to-man coverage with the safety, comes down with a big catch.
- 3:17:15Mobley stays in the game and gets two tight ends, Mobley and Clarence K.
- 3:17:21Watson and Johnson have split left the pitch to Sammy Weiner running to his left,
- 3:17:25nearly clapping his own backfield and he manages to get out of bounds with a 50-yard line, but he'll lose two yards.
- 3:17:31Frank Minnifield drove him out of bounds, but he was almost dropped for a bigger loss by Sam Clancy, who had him in the backfield, but he was able to get away.
- 3:17:38Well, he's got that great upper body strength and he just stiff-armed the defensive back as he came up. If he doesn't do that, he loses about an extra five or six yards.
- 3:17:46Big play for John Elway and company, second down, about second down and 13 yards to go. They need to have a safe pass, but they need to have a complete pass.
- 3:17:55Rich Collins' range is about 45 yards, although he has kicked a 51-yarder this year.
- 3:18:00It's the longest field goal of his career, came in the first game against the Raiders.
- 3:18:04On second and 12, a deep drop by Elway, a screen pass, incomplete incentive for Steve Sewell and nearly intercepted by big Sam Clancy.
- 3:18:14What a play by Sam Clancy. Now, he's the defensive tackle. He's rushing in there. All of a sudden he sees the screen. What does he do?
- 3:18:20Stop rushing the quarterback, fielders out, he gets that big hand up in there and he almost comes down with the biggest play of his young career.
- 3:18:27He goes through his right in the middle of the screen when Elway had to throw it over there. Fortunately for Denver, he overthrew Sam Clancy.
- 3:18:35Third down and 12 for the Broncos at midfield. Mark Jackson is wide to the right. Steve Watson advanced Justin to wide to the left.
- 3:18:47John Elway sends Justin in motion. Elway retreats inside his 40, getting a lot, steps up, now scrambling to his left across the 40, 45, throws down field and is caught at the 22-yard line by Steve Watson.
- 3:19:01But it looked like Elway might have been past the line of scrimmage. Oh, it was awfully close. He was right on the line of scrimmage.
- 3:19:08I don't think they're going to call him past the line of scrimmage. He was right on the line of scrimmage when he pulled the ball down.
- 3:19:14He had both the run and the pass option and he decided to just pull up short and flip that ball over there. What a big catch by Steve Watson.
- 3:19:23Wow. Every play is a big play in this game. It kind of stuns the crowd because now they're in Rich Carless' field goal range.
- 3:19:31The game to the 22-yard line of Cleveland. The score tied 20-20 in overtime.
- 3:19:37Lance Johnson is in the game now. He flips out wide to the right. Lance Johnson is wide to the left and Elway is going to call a timeout.
- 3:19:45They have been called by Cleveland. Timeout, Cleveland. Yep, Brown's called a timeout. Well, you can't take them with you.
- 3:19:52So we've got a timeout with 11-03 remaining in overtime. It's Denver 20 and Cleveland 20.
- 3:19:58Hi, this is my good captain. You know, I'm the kind of guy who hates controversy. That's why I always rent from budget.
- 3:20:04Budget gives you more than just a car. And here's a special deal.
- 3:20:08Now for a limited time, you can get a poster of me free when you rent a car at any of Budget's 53 Chicagoland locations.
- 3:20:15So go with a pro. Rent a quality car from Budget and get a free poster of me.
- 3:20:20Or if you don't need to rent, pay two bucks and get one anyway. Take it from me, Mike Dixon. It's worth it.
- 3:20:27This bus for those of you who live life the way you want to. You've got your own mind. You're one of a kind.
- 3:20:37I'll take my hat off to you. You really make it work. And this bus for you.
- 3:20:47You really make it work. And as a bush. This bus for you.
- 3:20:53You really make it work.
- 3:20:58The Denver Broncos have a first down for Cleveland 42 with 1103 remaining in overtime. The score tied 20-20.
- 3:21:05The Broncos are already within Rich Carlos field goal range during the regular season. He was 8 for 8 from 30 to 39 yards out.
- 3:21:12You're looking at a 39-yard field goal right now.
- 3:21:15Yeah, but what they want to do is they don't want to try a 39-yard field goal.
- 3:21:19What they're going to try to do is try to drive the ball down. I would look for them to run at least two times, try to get safe position right in the middle of the field.
- 3:21:27Then if they don't make it, maybe go to a safe pass. Elway swinging one of the backs out of the back way.
- 3:21:32Out of the backfield. Nothing to threaten the situation or throw a possible interception.
- 3:21:36Then if they don't make it, then bring in Carlos. But I would think they're going to try to keep this drive alive.
- 3:21:41It's not time to bring them in yet.
- 3:21:43Then Sampson's foot's out wide to the right. Vance Johnson is wide to the left.
- 3:21:49K and Orson Mobley, two tight ends in the game. Sammy Winder's alone setback. Mobley is in motion left to right.
- 3:21:55Elway gives the winder, sliding to his right inside the 20, drives out of the 16-yard line.
- 3:22:00The game is 6 yards on the play as Anthony Griggs, the right inside linebacker, made the tackle.
- 3:22:05And now when he carried that ball that time, he had both arms wrapped around that ball, keeping it in tight.
- 3:22:10Don't fumble. Just drive the ball down now. They just want to get good field goal position.
- 3:22:15And listen to this, 80,000 people and not one of them is saying a word.
- 3:22:19Sam Plancy replaces Anthony Griggs on defense for Cleveland. Second down and 5 in the 17-yard line.
- 3:22:26Elway on the give. The winder straight ahead. Hit and drop.
- 3:22:30That about the line of scrimmage, the 16.
- 3:22:35A reminder that the executive producer of NBC Radio Sports is Jack O'Rourke.
- 3:22:39The game has been produced and directed by Fred Posner. The associate producer is Len Weiner.
- 3:22:43Production assistant Eric Spitz. Engineering provided by Larry Schmiggen here in Cleveland.
- 3:22:48By Mark Bracker, Stuart Bell, and Joe Albig in New York.
- 3:22:54Griggs is back in on defense for the Browns. Third down, 4 from the 16-yard line.
- 3:22:59They don't get it here. They'll go for a field goal.
- 3:23:03Mobley is in motion. Elway gives the winder, sliding right, runs right up the back of Keith Bishop,
- 3:23:08and he's dropped for no gain. And now it's time for Rich Carlos to come on to try to win this football game.
- 3:23:14This will be about a 33-yard attempt for Carlos. As I mentioned, he is 8 for 8 from 30 to 39 yards out.
- 3:23:21He's kicked two field goals today.
- 3:23:23Now we'll look for Cleveland to maybe call timeout, make him think about it a little bit more.
- 3:23:28They're lining up, but now if you're a good defensive unit, you say, hey, wait a minute, timeout, we want timeout.
- 3:23:32Let him think about it. Let him concentrate. Let him worry about it a little bit.
- 3:23:36Gary Kubiak will hold. Keith Bishop will center the football as the Denver Broncos try to win it in overtime.
- 3:23:42A 33-yard attempt by Rich Carlos.
- 3:23:46The barefoot kicker from the University of Cincinnati trying to break a 20-all tie.
- 3:23:51The ball spotted down. The kick is on the way, and it is good, and the Denver Broncos have won it.
- 3:24:01The dog pound is silent as the Denver Broncos storm onto the field.
- 3:24:06Rich Carlos' field goal gives the Broncos a win in overtime, 23-20.
- 3:24:12Today's game has been brought to you by Budweiser, Beechwood Aid for that clean, crisp tape.

- 3:24:41The final score in overtime, the Denver Broncos, 23, and the Cleveland Browns, 20.
- 3:24:47Coming up next, the Redskins and the Giants for the NFC Championship. This is the NFL on NBC.
