- 0:21Hello everyone, and welcome to the PTT Music Podcast!
- 0:25I'm your host, Jordan Sterling, joined as always by my wonderful co host,
- 0:30positive behavior expert and Creative Correspondent, Ava Brooks.
- 0:34Hello everyone!
- 0:35We are so glad you are here with us today.
- 0:38Today, Ava and I are diving into one of our absolute favorite topics in positive
- 0:43psychology: how we can actively design our mindsets and everyday routines for
- 0:48maximum momentum and joy.
- 0:51Our episode title is Peak End Engineering: Rewire Hard Work with a Better Finish,
- 0:57and that is exactly what we are focusing on today.
- 1:00Yes!
- 1:00We love exploring behavioral tools that help people thrive,
- 1:05build strong habits, and truly savor their achievements.
- 1:08Peak end engineering explains how our memory stores positive experiences and how we
- 1:14can rewire how we look at hard work.
- 1:16It is so powerful.
- 1:18Basically, our brain does not sum up every single minute of an activity equally.
- 1:24Instead, what psychologists call duration neglect shows that our memory focuses on
- 1:30two main moments: the emotional peak and how the experience wraps up at the very
- 1:35end.
- 1:36Exactly!
- 1:37The remembering self...
- 1:39the part of our brain that crafts our memories...
- 1:42logs the high point and the landing pad.
- 1:45When you end any focus block, workout, or creative session on an upbeat,
- 1:50high energy note, your brain anchors the whole event as a total triumph.
- 1:56Think about how incredible that is for habit building and personal productivity.
- 2:01When we engage in deep, focused effort, whether it is crafting a song,
- 2:06outlining a major project, or hitting a personal fitness record,
- 2:10our brain is registering every micro decision along the way.
- 2:14But when we look back on that effort tomorrow morning, we do not replay every single
- 2:19second in real time.
- 2:20That is right, Jordan.
- 2:22Our brains are efficient storytellers.
- 2:25They distill complex experiences into concise mental snapshots.
- 2:30The cognitive psychologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman,
- 2:34along with psychologist Barbara Fredrickson, discovered that human memory relies
- 2:39heavily on this peak end heuristic.
- 2:42Instead of taking an average of the entire duration, we automatically average the
- 2:47emotional high point and the final moments.
- 2:50To show just how strongly the brain values a positive finish,
- 2:54there is a famous classic experiment by Daniel Kahneman and Barbara Fredrickson.
- 2:59They placed participants in a study involving cold water immersion.
- 3:04In one trial, people held their hand in water at fourteen degrees Celsius for sixty
- 3:08seconds.
- 3:10In a second trial, they did those same sixty seconds, plus an extra thirty seconds
- 3:15where the water warmed up just one degree to fifteen degrees Celsius.
- 3:19And when participants were asked which experience they preferred to repeat,
- 3:23sixty nine percent chose the longer trial!
- 3:27Even though it lasted longer, ending on that slightly warmer,
- 3:31improving trend made the overall memory feel much better.
- 3:35It really demonstrates how much power we have to shape our experience when we finish
- 3:40with intention and positivity.
- 3:43It shows that human perception is wonderfully responsive to upward trajectory.
- 3:48When things finish on a positive, uplifting trend, our memory logs the whole
- 3:53endeavor as rewarding and worth repeating.
- 3:56As positive behavior specialists, we can take this insight and turn it into a high
- 4:02impact daily tool.
- 4:04Absolutely!
- 4:05Think about how we approach challenging creative or professional sessions.
- 4:10When you are deep in the zone pushing through complex ideas,
- 4:14you are putting in dedicated grit and resilience.
- 4:17And that is where intentional music selection becomes a total game changer for
- 4:22emotional regulation.
- 4:24And music plays an incredible role in peak end engineering.
- 4:29For instance, when you are pushing through a challenging task,
- 4:32playing a song like "I Got Heart" reminds you of your inner resilience and
- 4:36dedication.
- 4:38It helps you tap into that emotional peak while working through the effort.
- 4:42"I Got Heart" is such a perfect anthem for that middle phase of deep focus!
- 4:47It builds that sense of inner strength and purpose.
- 4:51You feel confident, grounded, and motivated because the music aligns with your
- 4:56determination to grow and achieve.
- 4:59And then as you approach the end of your session, instead of letting your work taper
- 5:04off quietly or stepping away abruptly, you intentionally curate your finish line.
- 5:10You orchestrate an exhilarating ending that signals victory to your brain.
- 5:14That is so true!
- 5:16And then to elevate your finish line, turning on an empowering track like "No Limit"
- 5:21gives your brain that exhilarating climax.
- 5:24That strong finish directly ties back to our title, Peak End Engineering: Rewire
- 5:30Hard Work with a Better Finish, because when you end on a high note like "No Limit",
- 5:35you rewire your memory of the entire effort.
- 5:38That connection between our episode title, Peak End Engineering: Rewire Hard Work
- 5:44with a Better Finish, and those two songs, "I Got Heart" and "No Limit",
- 5:49is so seamless.
- 5:51"I Got Heart" gives you the stamina for the peak effort, and "No Limit" gives you
- 5:55that triumphant ending that rewires how your mind stores the experience.
- 6:00When you put "No Limit" on during those final few minutes, your neurochemistry
- 6:04responds to the energetic rhythm, the inspiring lyrics, and the triumphant melody.
- 6:10It triggers a surge of positive reinforcement.
- 6:14Your brain literally tags the entire work session with a feeling of boundless
- 6:19potential.
- 6:21How do you usually put this into practice in your own routine,
- 6:24Ava?
- 6:24Whenever I complete a productive writing block, I like to cue up an inspiring track
- 6:29like "No Limit" for the final three minutes.
- 6:32It gives my brain a vibrant, celebratory finish line and leaves me feeling
- 6:37incredible.
- 6:38Love that!
- 6:39You are linking your hard work directly with dopamine and music,
- 6:44so your brain logs the entire focus session as a massive win.
- 6:48And because your brain logged it as a massive win, you do not experience resistance
- 6:53or hesitation the next time you sit down to work.
- 6:57You actually look forward to it!
- 6:59You are primed with positive expectation, ready to channel "I Got Heart" during your
- 7:05deep focus and celebrate again at the end with "No Limit".
- 7:10That is the true beauty of behavioral engineering.
- 7:14You are taking charge of your environmental cues and emotional landing pads.
- 7:19You are actively designing an environment that nurtures momentum,
- 7:23self confidence, and continuous growth.
- 7:26Yes!
- 7:26It elevates your energy and ensures you transition into the rest of your day feeling
- 7:31accomplished, capable, and excited.
- 7:34Think about how this applies across all areas of life, too.
- 7:37It is not just work or study sessions.
- 7:40If you are finishing a workout, complete the last set with your favorite high energy
- 7:45playlist.
- 7:46If you are having a team meeting or a creative brainstorming session,
- 7:50conclude by highlighting your favorite success story or celebrating everyone's
- 7:54contributions.
- 7:55I love that point, Jordan.
- 7:57Celebrating progress at the finish line creates an environment of encouragement and
- 8:02shared achievement.
- 8:04When we design great finishes in our personal lives, our work,
- 8:08and our creative projects, we build a continuous lifestyle of enthusiasm and
- 8:13success.
- 8:14So for everyone listening today, what is your takeaway challenge?
- 8:19Here is our challenge for you today.
- 8:21Pick your next focus block, channel your resilience with "I Got Heart",
- 8:27and finish strong by playing "No Limit" during the last three minutes of your
