- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. Happy Tuesday.
- 0:16It's the 21st of May. Good morning.
- 0:20Good day, good evening, good night.
- 0:21Wherever you are in this day of yours when you have pressed on
- 0:25play, here I am And here we are, ready to continue reading
- 0:30through God's Word one chapter at a time.
- 0:32And at the moment we are doing that through the book of
- 0:36Proverbs. Now, something about Proverbs I
- 0:40could understand if you started to get a little bit frustrated
- 0:44and a little bit put out, shall we say, with our modern ears as
- 0:48the author keeps on talking about these immoral women.
- 0:51And we might say it's not just women that are immoral, mate.
- 0:54What about all those men doing the wrong thing?
- 0:57Remember, this is the author talking about wisdom in terms of
- 1:03lady wisdom. So the author gives wisdom, a
- 1:06gender and a personality, and we talk about lady wisdom.
- 1:10And the flip side of that, the antithesis of that is this
- 1:15immoral woman. Not that women are immoral, but
- 1:18this is this character that is playing the opposite, playing
- 1:22the opposite to wisdom. So when we talk about immoral
- 1:25women, it's not actually talking about immoral women.
- 1:27It's talking about the temptation to follow the way of
- 1:31folly, to follow the way of desire, and to follow the way
- 1:35that does not talk about godliness and self discipline.
- 1:40So if you find your gender politics getting poked and your
- 1:44eyes are getting raised, it's OK.
- 1:47It is a very different context that this was written and that
- 1:51is the language they have chose to communicate a much bigger
- 1:55concept. So this reading goes out to all
- 1:58of you Wise wise women listening because us seldom wise men are
- 2:04so grateful for your presence in our lives.
- 2:08So, having said all that, let's read together, shall we?
- 2:10Friends, let's read Proverbs Chapter 5.
- 2:23My son, pay attention to my wisdom.
- 2:27Listen carefully to my wires counsel.
- 2:30Then you will show discernment and your lips will express what
- 2:33you've learned. For the lips of an immoral woman
- 2:37are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil.
- 2:42But in the end she is as bitter as poison, as dangerous as a
- 2:48double edged sword. Her feet go down to death.
- 2:52Her steps lead straight to the grave, for she cares nothing
- 2:56about the path to life. She staggers down a crooked
- 3:00trail and doesn't realise it. So now my sons listen to me.
- 3:05Never stray from what I'm about to say.
- 3:09Stay away from her. Don't go near the door of her
- 3:13house. If you do, you will lose your
- 3:16honour and we'll lose to merciless people.
- 3:19All you have achieved. Strangers will consume your
- 3:22wealth and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labour.
- 3:27In the end, you will groan in anguish when disease consumes
- 3:32your body. You will say how I hated
- 3:36discipline, if only I'd not ignored all the warnings.
- 3:40Oh, why didn't I listen to my teachers?
- 3:43Why didn't I pay attention to my instructors?
- 3:46I've come to the brink of utter ruin, and now I must face public
- 3:51disgrace. Drink water from your own well.
- 3:56Share your love only with your wife.
- 3:59Why spill the water of your springs in the streets having
- 4:03sex with just anyone? You should reserve it for
- 4:06yourselves. Never share it with strangers.
- 4:10Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you.
- 4:14Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
- 4:16She is a loving dear, a graceful dough.
- 4:21Let her breasts satisfy you always.
- 4:24May you always be captivated by her love.
- 4:27Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman or fondled the
- 4:32breasts of a promiscuous woman? For the Lord sees clearly what a
- 4:36man does, examining every path he takes.
- 4:40An evil man is held captive by his own sins.
- 4:44They are ropes that catch and hold him.
- 4:48He will die for lack of self control.
- 4:50He would be lost because of his grateful foolishness.
- 5:04Our Lord, what language this proverb uses.
- 5:08Speaking of the temptation that would draw us away from our
- 5:12fidelity to you, Lord, may we always be fully satisfied
- 5:18pursuing you and your truth and your wisdom and your ways.
- 5:26Loading The World shows us a quicker, easier way that seems
- 5:30just so cool that we just love to just be more involved with
- 5:34that. Because surely, surely, that's
- 5:36the way the future Lord, draw us back to your ways of compassion,
- 5:46of faithfulness, of honesty, of dedication.
- 5:52Lord, all those things that we know in our heart we know to be
- 5:56true. But the conscience that you have
- 5:58given us, that continues to draw us back to your ways.
- 6:02Help that be our guiding light, Holy Spirit, shape us and give
- 6:07us ongoing perseverance to always, always choose your way
- 6:13because that is the way ultimately that will lead to a
- 6:17glorious eternity with you and Lord.
- 6:21Even when we do get it wrong, when that flash in the pan that
- 6:24this world offers is so bright and enticing in our eyes and we
- 6:29we change direction, Thank you that through Jesus you have you
- 6:35have found a way to bring us back to you and to forgive us
- 6:38and reset us. Thank you for your fidelity to
- 6:42us, your forgiveness of us, and your unfailing love for us.
- 6:48We pray all of this in your name, Jesus.
- 6:51Amen.
