- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, we ready? Hey, what's up? We're Drax Project
- 0:03Speaker 1: on The Smallsy Show.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I haven't seen these lads in a long time back
- 0:07Speaker 2: on the show. And for the first time at our
- 0:10Speaker 2: new home. You like what I did with the joint?
- 0:12Speaker 3: What a view.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's pretty beautiful.
- 0:13Speaker 3: The fact you built this with your own hands through Smallsy,
- 0:16Speaker 3: this is incredible.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Drax Project here, everybody. Welcome, lads. Catch me up.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Yes.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We're trying to work out the last time we saw
- 0:26Speaker 2: each other. We think it's 2019. Yeah.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It was in a, it was in a rundown sort
- 0:32Speaker 1: of Hollywood shack.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah. That sounds real. That sounds, I believe that.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You guys were staying there and we got a, we
- 0:38Speaker 1: got a message from an unknown number.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:41Speaker 1: It was very, it was, it was a good interview and, um.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:44Speaker 3: And, um.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Appreciate the feedback. It was a positive memory for us, especially.
- 0:49Speaker 1: That was probably the last time we were, actually that was,
- 0:51Speaker 1: that was the last time we were in the US.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 0:53Speaker 1: We haven't gone back. Have we?
- 0:55Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I can't remember.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Okay, well, I hope it wasn't anything to do with
- 0:58Speaker 2: yours truly.
- 0:59Speaker 1: No, no, it was nothing to do with that. I mean,
- 1:01Speaker 1: that was.
- 1:02Speaker 3: It was the.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Drug smuggling, and that was why.
- 1:05Speaker 1: We've had multiple talks about that shack, but.
- 1:09Speaker 3: No, that was the last one. This is nice.
- 1:12Speaker 1: This is way nicer. Thank you.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Thank you very much. Well... You guys.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm just kidding everyone, by the way.
- 1:17Speaker 2: But, you know, they didn't smuggle drugs whatsoever.
- 1:19Speaker 1: They were dressed in all white and it was a
- 1:21Speaker 1: very nice house.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Thank you. Now, you briefly lived here in Australia over
- 1:27Speaker 2: the last couple of years.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:28Speaker 2: But then you two have gone home because you're now dads.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Congratulations.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I'm going to ask, remember, there's no wrong answer here.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Even though you feel the pressure, because some people say,
- 1:40Speaker 2: best thing I ever did was to become a parent.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Is being a rock star, pop star, or a parent better?
- 1:49Speaker 2: What's better?
- 1:51Speaker 1: No, there's not. I think just biologically.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:57Speaker 1: It doesn't. It feels.
- 2:00Speaker 3: You can be both.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Okay. That's what he's trying to say.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I guess so. But there's nothing. They're just completely different things. Okay.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It's like the highs of each are extremely high and amazing.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 3: The baseline of a rock star. whatever that is.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yep. I just never really think we were like what
- 2:17Speaker 1: you described.
- 2:18Speaker 3: But yeah. But also the lows.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Pop yourself up.
- 2:23Speaker 3: The extremes of parenthood are more extreme than a baseline.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You think you've been sleep deprived because your flight's delayed?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 1: No, you haven't.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Oh, is that so? Because I tell you, jet lag
- 2:37Speaker 2: can really mess you up.
- 2:39Speaker 1: With jet lag, you see the end. You're like, I
- 2:42Speaker 1: know at least when I get there, I can sleep.
- 2:44Speaker 1: But with a two-month-old, Yeah, oh, there's no sleep. You
- 2:46Speaker 1: don't actually know when you might get a full night's sleep,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and it might be two years. Oh, God. You don't
- 2:51Speaker 1: know when the end is.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I don't have kids, obviously. You can tell. So, like,
- 2:56Speaker 2: you're not talking this up to me, right?
- 2:58Speaker 1: There's a huge difference. But when it's good, it's literally
- 3:02Speaker 1: impossible to explain.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And then the love.
- 3:05Speaker 1: That's what I mean.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah. And I guess you feel like you've actually contributed. Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: We've done something.
- 3:12Speaker 1: It feels so good in a really happily selfish way.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, you're so amazing.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And I'm, shit, we did a good job.
- 3:21Speaker 2: How old are they? They're only like two years old.
- 3:23Speaker 2: They're two years old, yeah. They're going to be geniuses,
- 3:26Speaker 2: you can already tell, right?
- 3:27Speaker 3: I feel everyone thinks their own kid is the greatest
- 3:29Speaker 3: human to ever exist.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I'm glad you can see that, right? Because everyone also
- 3:35Speaker 2: thinks their kid is.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Beautiful.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Let's be real. Some babies can be ugly.
- 3:41Speaker 3: You said it, Smallsy. No, I know.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I'm just saying it as the casual observer. I don't know.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's weird.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's weird how you said that after I showed you
- 3:50Speaker 3: my baby. But yeah, no, we've got two-year-olds. I've got
- 3:55Speaker 3: a four-month-old as well.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:56Speaker 3: So I'm now on the double. We've doubled up.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, okay.
- 4:00Speaker 3: But yeah, we've just written a song about it, actually.
- 4:02Speaker 2: This was it. I was going to dovetail into the
- 4:04Speaker 2: new song you've written about being dads, yeah?
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. For the first time, it's probably the first
- 4:11Speaker 3: time we've brought in a super personal element of our
- 4:14Speaker 3: actual real life into our... It's not work, but you
- 4:19Speaker 3: know what I mean. It's non.
- 4:20Speaker 1: It's like... Everything has kind of always had an element
- 4:23Speaker 1: of fiction.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:25Speaker 1: In songwriting, for me at least. It's like never really
- 4:28Speaker 1: super specifically personal. But this one is like no fantasy elements,
- 4:33Speaker 1: no fiction. It's just like, yeah. This is life now.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And it felt really good to write.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 1: It felt really good.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Was it a hard decision to come to to write
- 4:42Speaker 2: something so personal?
- 4:43Speaker 1: Well, I wrote the original idea.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And it's changed a decent amount since then. The guitar
- 4:48Speaker 1: completely changed. We've added lyrics, added sections.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 1: But I just showed it to everyone in our like
- 4:53Speaker 1: group chat and everyone was like, sweet as, but Matt said,
- 4:57Speaker 1: he was like, bro, obviously he's the other dad in
- 4:59Speaker 1: the group. The only dad.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So he's like, bro. And then like a couple of
- 5:02Speaker 1: months passed and we were jamming and he's like, we
- 5:04Speaker 1: just have to, can we, can we try that one?
- 5:05Speaker 1: Can we try that one? Can we try it? He
- 5:07Speaker 1: was a pretty big advocate of finishing the song. So yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Nice.
- 5:10Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't know. It just felt really just
- 5:12Speaker 1: like a flow of, I was bawling my eyes out crying,
- 5:15Speaker 1: like writing the song.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Oh really?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Like super deep for you.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess. Yeah, definitely.
- 5:22Speaker 3: It's not a sad song.
- 5:23Speaker 1: No, it's not sad.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I think parents will relate to it. It's just that
- 5:28Speaker 3: feeling of... Just so happy. You know, people try to
- 5:32Speaker 3: explain it all the time. There's no point even trying
- 5:33Speaker 3: to explain it. It's just overwhelming.
- 5:35Speaker 2: You're really making me feel like an empty vessel.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 5:39Speaker 3: No, no.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And thank you for that. I appreciate you. Cause you're
- 5:41Speaker 2: describing something I'm not going to experience. So on that note,
- 5:45Speaker 2: go fuck yourself.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I think, I think I feel, I felt like there's
- 5:50Speaker 1: a lyric. It was like, yeah, life starts to make
- 5:52Speaker 1: a little sense. It's like, oh shit. Like maybe this
- 5:54Speaker 1: is actually what my whole purpose in life was to
- 5:56Speaker 1: do was to be. Oh, okay.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I like that. Um, are we activating dad mode? Uh,
- 6:01Speaker 2: in the, are we, have we, are we, yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I think we got it.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Well, I mean, do you hang your phone on your
- 6:07Speaker 2: belt now?
- 6:07Speaker 1: Matt's been dad modding for so much longer than me.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I feel like just your general demeanor.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Do you like just, you know, just, just shout at
- 6:15Speaker 2: the TV more than you used to.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Sit down more. We raise the first.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Do you have one of those lazy boy couches? You
- 6:24Speaker 2: just go, Hey babe, get me a beer. Yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I feel like I'm at the point where I'm trying
- 6:29Speaker 1: to be purposefully active. Because I've only got a two-year-old.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Maybe that'll change when they're a teenager.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Have you trained them to get you snacks yet?
- 6:38Speaker 1: Or are they not walking? No, I'm full butler mode.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, good.
- 6:43Speaker 2: That's the one thing that is like, you know, I
- 6:45Speaker 2: can't wait, if I do have a kid, to train it. To, like,
- 6:49Speaker 2: take the bins out. Oh, you've got to optimize that thing. Oh, absolutely.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I'm building up so much brownie points with her. I've
- 6:58Speaker 1: done everything for you for so long.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 7:00Speaker 1: The least you could do is take the bin out.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and wash up and stack the dishwasher.
- 7:04Speaker 1: She loves helping, though. They just love to help, honestly.
- 7:07Speaker 1: They don't consider a chore as a chore. Not yet.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Not yet. But if you start them early, apparently, it's
- 7:15Speaker 1: just part of life.
- 7:15Speaker 3: I like that.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I like that. Later this year, you're going to be
- 7:18Speaker 2: jumping on tour with Robbie Williams. Are you looking forward
- 7:19Speaker 2: to playing those shows?
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah, massively.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Two stadiums back home in New Zealand, so that's going
- 7:24Speaker 3: to be mind-blowing.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty excited. It's like Robbie Williams.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 2: What? How did you get the call for that?
- 7:32Speaker 1: It was like a group call with the whole band
- 7:35Speaker 1: and the manager. And our manager, he's like, hey, we
- 7:37Speaker 1: just got the yes.
- 7:39Speaker 3: This has come across my desk. How do you feel
- 7:41Speaker 3: about opening for Robbie?
- 7:42Speaker 1: And then Matt was like, are you serious?
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Matt's actually, yeah, he's a big advocate for all of
- 7:48Speaker 1: our successes. But everyone was like, oh yeah, that's awesome.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Matt was like, what am I doing here? Are you
- 7:55Speaker 1: guys taking the purse? Of course, say yes. So we're
- 7:59Speaker 1: glad Matt has the energy.
- 8:01Speaker 3: It's kind of the first one, first kind of big
- 8:03Speaker 3: slot since Christina Aguilera.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Since we saw you guys at the house shack.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's going to be cool. Christina Aguilera was a lot.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Just for the record, it wasn't a shack.
- 8:12Speaker 1: No, sorry, sorry.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It was a mansion.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Really nice.
- 8:14Speaker 3: You can call it that if you want.
- 8:16Speaker 1: But yeah, literally since then we haven't. I mean, we
- 8:18Speaker 1: did the New Zealand 660 stuff during COVID was, I guess,
- 8:22Speaker 1: a big deal in New Zealand. Yeah.
- 8:25Speaker 3: What's great about opening slots is that there's no real
- 8:28Speaker 3: pressure on you.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:29Speaker 3: We have 30 minutes to play. So we trim all
- 8:32Speaker 3: the fat. It's just the songs that we like playing
- 8:35Speaker 3: and people know, hopefully.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 3: And we can just go hard. I love that. And
- 8:38Speaker 3: then we're done, and then we get to watch a
- 8:40Speaker 3: world-class act afterwards. Yeah.
- 8:42Speaker 2: And sometimes try and sneak in, eat some of his catering.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Treat yourself backstage.
- 8:48Speaker 1: The stadium catering is, I forget about it every single time.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And then you get there, and you're like, I forgot.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yes. You leave with lamb shanks in your pocket. I'm
- 8:56Speaker 3: taking this home.
- 8:57Speaker 1: There's one time, are we talking about catering now? Yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 1: we've got catering. There's one time there was this, I've
- 9:03Speaker 1: never eaten lobster before.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:05Speaker 1: But I didn't really understand. Everyone's like, lobster's so fancy
- 9:08Speaker 1: or whatever. I was like, okay, it tastes like fish.
- 9:11Speaker 1: But it was just, it was next level, dude. I've
- 9:13Speaker 1: definitely eaten some of the best food of my life.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Backstage at a stadium tour? Some sort of, At some
- 9:18Speaker 1: sort of festival. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I love that. Well, I hope you get the lobster
- 9:22Speaker 2: you deserve with the Robbie tour. Congratulations on the new song.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And let's get you back in again, right?
- 9:30Speaker 1: Thank you. Yeah, I would love to. Thanks for having us. Smallsy,
- 9:34Speaker 1: now on KISS.
