- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendsly Happy Friday.
- 0:04Welcome back to the podcast. I hope that you've had a really
- 0:07great week and are heading into the weekend feeling encouraged
- 0:10and really strong. I have an encouraging podcast
- 0:14episode for you guys, so I'm really excited for this one.
- 0:18This morning in my quiet time, we're going to be in First
- 0:22Thessalonians 5 versus 1 through 11.
- 0:24But it honestly made me pause and truly reflect because
- 0:30especially with everything crazy going on in the world right now
- 0:33in different countries, within our own nation, in the United
- 0:36States, there is so much speculation online about
- 0:40prophecy and end times and when Jesus might return.
- 0:45And I think people can get really deep into analyzing the
- 0:49timelines or trying to connect the dots between every headline
- 0:53to a prediction. But I do want to just take a
- 0:56step back and ask a really simple question.
- 0:59What does the Bible actually say word for word?
- 1:04Because at the end of the day, the Bible, the truth is what
- 1:09grounds us. So I'm going to go ahead and
- 1:13read First Thessalonians 5 and I'm going to read in the Passion
- 1:16translation because I think it's just very straightforward and I
- 1:20love how it's written. So starting in verse one, now
- 1:24beloved brothers and sisters, concerning the question of God's
- 1:28precise times in specific seasons, you don't need me to
- 1:32write anything to you. For you already know quite well
- 1:35that the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly and as a
- 1:39complete surprise. For while some are saying
- 1:43finally we have peace and security, sudden destruction
- 1:47will arrive at their doorstep like labor pains seizing a
- 1:50pregnant woman, and with no chance of escape.
- 1:55But you, beloved brothers and sisters, are not living in the
- 1:58dark, allowing that day to creep up on you like a thief coming to
- 2:02steal. For you are all children of the
- 2:05light and children of the day. We don't belong to the night,
- 2:10nor to darkness. This is why we must not fall
- 2:13asleep as the rest do, but keep wide awake and clear headed for
- 2:19those who are asleep. Sleep the night away, and
- 2:22drunkards get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day,
- 2:26we must stay alert and clear headed by placing the
- 2:30breastplate of faith and love over our hearts, and a helmet of
- 2:34the hope of salvation over our thoughts.
- 2:37For God has not destined us for wrath, but to possess salvation
- 2:42through our Lord Jesus the Anointed. 1 He gave His life for
- 2:46us so that we may share in resurrection life in union with
- 2:51Him, whether we are awake or asleep.
- 2:55Because of this, encourage the hearts of your fellow believers
- 2:59and support one another just as you have already been doing.
- 3:04All right, there is so much in there, but I think the biggest
- 3:09take away for me was we don't know when Jesus is coming back.
- 3:13And that might be really obvious, but the Bible is
- 3:17actually so clear about that. It says that the day of the Lord
- 3:21will come like a thief in the night, meaning that it is meant
- 3:25to be unexpected and unannounced.
- 3:27It's meant to be sudden. So instead of getting tangled up
- 3:31trying to figure out the when, we should be asking a different
- 3:34question. What if it were today?
- 3:39What if today was the day that Jesus returned?
- 3:42How would we want him to find us?
- 3:47That's the posture that this passage is calling us to.
- 3:51It's not meant to be producing anxiety or fear or endless
- 3:56speculation, but a readiness in our hearts.
- 4:00This is like a spiritual red alert sign.
- 4:02Think of a caution exclamation mark.
- 4:05Be ready wherever and whenever. And readiness does not mean
- 4:10sitting around doing nothing. We're not meant to be idle or
- 4:14lazy. It doesn't mean obsessing over
- 4:17signs. It means living faithfully
- 4:19today, in the present moment. We're called to work hard with
- 4:24whatever God has placed in our hands right now.
- 4:27That means that your time, your money and resources, your
- 4:32friendships, your romantic relationships, your
- 4:35opportunities, all of it is something that we're called a
- 4:39steward because it was never ours to begin with.
- 4:45And last night I actually had the privilege of going to a
- 4:49really cool gala for the Tim Tebow Foundation.
- 4:52And Tim was speaking and said something that was super
- 4:56meaningful to me. He said that he would rather get
- 4:59to heaven exhausted than well rested.
- 5:04And that stuck with me because yes, the Bible talks about the
- 5:08importance of rest. God created the Sabbath for a
- 5:12reason. Ecclesiastes is a book talking
- 5:15all about different seasons and it mentions that we're meant to
- 5:19enjoy the life and the blessings that God gives us.
- 5:22And that includes rest. But I think it's important to
- 5:27note that rest was never meant to turn into wasted opportunity
- 5:32because we have been placed here on this earth for a purpose.
- 5:35And the time that we have, it's constantly ticking down and what
- 5:40we've been given, it matters. So I believe that the question
- 5:44becomes, how are we using the time that we have been allotted?
- 5:50Reflect on who is pouring into you and who are you pouring
- 5:55into? Are you saving your money just
- 5:58to spend it, or are you looking for ways to bless others with
- 6:03it? Are you surrounding yourself
- 6:05mostly with people who help you become more like Jesus, are
- 6:09constantly motivating you in the faith?
- 6:12Paul talks about believers in this passage as children of the
- 6:17day, people who belong to the light, people who are awake,
- 6:23sober minded, alert, expectant. So that made me pause and ask
- 6:29myself honestly a hard question. But if someone looked at my
- 6:36life, my patterns, the places that I consistently go, the
- 6:40things that I spend majority of my time on, would they put me in
- 6:45a category as someone of the day or of the night?
- 6:49Now obviously that does not mean that you can't literally do
- 6:52things at night, but it's more about what your life
- 6:55communicates. What do your regular habits say
- 6:59that you value? Where do you seem to find life
- 7:02and enjoyment? Because as believers, we're told
- 7:06something super important. We do not belong to the
- 7:11darkness. The word belong is key because
- 7:16we've been set apart. We're meant to be different, and
- 7:21frankly, trying to fit into the world when you don't belong
- 7:24there is nothing short of exhausting.
- 7:28It actually reminds me of something kind of funny, but
- 7:31gene shopping. I used to hate it, especially
- 7:34when I was younger, but I had in my head I wanted to fit into a
- 7:38certain size, but if it wasn't actually my size, it was so
- 7:43uncomfortable and so defeating. So I say that because you can
- 7:48try to squeeze into something, but it's just not going to work
- 7:52if it's not meant to work. And that's kind of what it's
- 7:56like forcing yourself into a life that God never designed for
- 7:59you. I also remember, especially my
- 8:03freshman year of college, feeling like I had to go to all
- 8:06the crazy quote UN quote best parties because that's what
- 8:10everyone said was fun and I just expected that's where life was
- 8:14found. That's how I'm going to get my
- 8:16full college experience. That's what I'm supposed to do.
- 8:20But honestly, I never felt like myself there.
- 8:25I would leave those places feeling uncomfortable and
- 8:28wondering what was wrong with me.
- 8:30Why was I not enjoying it like everyone else around me seem to
- 8:34be enjoying it? And now looking back, I realized
- 8:37nothing was wrong with me. I was just trying to fit into
- 8:41something I was never meant to fit into.
- 8:44Maybe you relate to that and you feel that too.
- 8:48Because the truth is, we were made for more than this world.
- 8:52We were made for freedom, for a relationship with our Holy
- 8:56Father, for a life that reflects Him.
- 9:00And one of the ways that we prepare for Jesus's return every
- 9:03single day is by putting on what Scripture calls the armor of
- 9:07God. I want to read this passage from
- 9:10Ephesians 6 over you guys because I think it's really
- 9:13helpful when we're given practical, specific things,
- 9:19starting in verse 13. Therefore, put on the full armor
- 9:23of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to
- 9:27stand your ground, and after you have done everything to stand,
- 9:32stand firm. Then with the belt of truth
- 9:35buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness
- 9:39in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that
- 9:42comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up
- 9:48the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the
- 9:51flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and
- 9:56the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
- 10:02So that is what we do when we are preparing, when we're
- 10:05getting ready for battle and just making ourselves more eager
- 10:11for Jesus's return, living each day spiritually prepared.
- 10:15But another huge piece of this passage is encouragement within
- 10:19the church. Paul ends by saying to encourage
- 10:23and build each other up. And that matters so much more
- 10:27than we realize. I think it's actually something
- 10:30that's lacking and it shows in the body of believers.
- 10:35Think about someone running a super long race.
- 10:38Towards the end, your legs can start to cramp.
- 10:42You're feeling it, you're gasping for air, you're worn
- 10:45out, you're tired. And sometimes the thing that
- 10:50pushes those racers across the finish line is not necessarily
- 10:54the strength, it's someone cheering for them.
- 10:57It's a voice in the crowd saying you can do this, keep going,
- 11:01stay strong. Encouragement can be so simple
- 11:05too. It can look like sending a
- 11:08friend a Bible verse when they come to mind or the Lord puts
- 11:12them on your heart. Texting someone simply that you
- 11:16love them, that you're thinking of them, that you hope that they
- 11:19have a great Friday. Giving someone a hug, asking if
- 11:24they need prayer. Those small things can be the
- 11:27difference between someone collapsing in discouragement or
- 11:32making it across the finish line.
- 11:36So here's a couple reflection questions for y'all today that
- 11:39I'm going to leave you with. Who is encouraging in your faith
- 11:42right now and who are you intentionally encouraging?
- 11:48And also, what is something that you could use prayer for, that
- 11:54you need encouragement for, that you could ask someone about?
- 11:59Let this be encouragement to y'all, to all of us, that we are
- 12:04to be people who help each other stay awake, stay alert and ready
- 12:09for Jesus. We're not meant to do this
- 12:11isolated, but integrated. So I'm going to go ahead and
- 12:15close this out in prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 12:20for your word and for the reminder that our hope is in
- 12:25you. God, we do not know the day or
- 12:28the hour that Jesus will return, but I pray that you would help
- 12:33us live ready. Help us use the time that you've
- 12:37blessed us with each day, each moment, every interaction, on a
- 12:43day-to-day. Would you teach us how to
- 12:46steward our relationships, our resources, our open doors in a
- 12:52way that honors you? Would you shape us into people
- 12:56of the light? May we live with an identity as
- 12:59children of the day, awake and walking in truth.
- 13:05And I just ask that you would bring specific people to our
- 13:08minds today that we can encourage and build up.
- 13:12I pray that we would run this race together, that you would
- 13:15align our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.
- 13:19By your spirit, Lord, we love you and we trust you with each
- 13:23day forward. We ask this all in your name.
- 13:27Amen. OK, well that is today's
- 13:30episode. Praying that you all have a
- 13:32great rest of your Friday afternoon and that the Lord
- 13:35really ministers to your heart today.
- 13:37And I hope that y'all have a great weekend.
- 13:40I'll talk to y'all soon.
