- 0:00When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them,
- 0:04the people answered the king, We have no portion in David,
- 0:08no share in Yishai's sons. To your tents,
- 0:11O Israel! Now look to your own house, O David!
- 0:16So all Israel returned to their homes.
- 0:20But Rehoboam continued to reign over the Israelites who lived in
- 0:24the towns of Judah. King Rehoboam sent out Hadoram,
- 0:28who was in charge of the forced labor, but the Israelites pelted
- 0:33him to death with stones. Thereupon, King Rehoboam
- 0:36hurriedly mounted his chariot and fled to Jerusalem.
- 0:41Israel, the Northern Kingdom, has been in revolt against
- 0:46the House of David to this day.
- 0:50Listen in as we unpack The story about
- 0:54the divided kingdom. The nation of Israel, once one nation,
- 0:58ruled with King David and then under Solomon
- 1:02became 2 nations: Northern

- 4:20offering in addition to the regular burnt offering,
- 4:23its meal offering, and libations. Third day: 11
- 4:28bulls, 2 rams, 14 yearling lambs without blemish.
- 4:382 Chronicles 11:1-13,
- 4:4222. When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem,
- 4:45he mustered the house of Judah and Benjamin,
- 4:48180,000 picked fighting men, to make
- 4:51war with Israel in order to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam.
- 4:56But the word of Hashem came to Shemaiah the man of Hashem,
- 5:00Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah,
- 5:04and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, thus says
- 5:08Hashem, you shall not set out to make war on your kinsmen.
- 5:12Let every man return to his home, for this thing has been brought
- 5:16about by Me. They heeded the words of Hashem and
- 5:19refrained from marching against Jeroboam.
- 5:24Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built fortified towns in Judah.
- 5:29He built up Bet-lechem and Etam and Tekoa
- 5:33and Beth-zur and Socoh and Adullam and
- 5:36Gath and Mareshah and Ziph and Adoram and
- 5:40Lachish and Azekah and Zorah and Aijalon and
- 5:44Hebron, which are in Judah and in
- 5:47Benjamin, as fortified towns. He strengthened
- 5:51the fortified towns and put commanders in them along with stores
- 5:55of food, oil, and wine, and shields and spears in every town.
- 6:00He strengthened them exceedingly. Thus Judah and Benjamin were
- 6:04His. The Kohanim and the Levi'im from all their
- 6:07territories throughout Israel presented themselves to Him.
- 6:13The Levi'im had their pasturelands and their holdings and had set out for
- 6:17Yehudah and Jerusalem, for Jeroboam and his sons had prevented
- 6:21them from serving Hashem, having appointed his own Kohanim for the shrine.
- 6:26Goat demons, and calves which he had made. From all the tribes
- 6:31of Israel, those intent on seeking the God of Israel followed
- 6:34them to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the God of their fathers. They strengthened
- 6:39the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam son
- 6:42of Solomon for 3 years, for they followed the ways of David and
- 6:46Solomon for 3 years.
- 6:50Rehoboam married Mahalath, daughter of Jerimoth son
- 6:54of David, and Abigail, daughter of Eliab son
- 6:57of Yishai. She bore him sons: Jeuth,
- 7:02Sheremiyah, Shemariah, and Zaham.
- 7:06He then took Maacah, daughter of Absalom. She bore
- 7:09him Aviah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.
- 7:14Rehoboam loved Maacah, daughter of Absalom, more than his other
- 7:18wives and concubines. Where he took 18
- 7:21wives and 60 concubines. He begot 28
- 7:26sons and 60 daughters. Rehoboam designated Avijah
- 7:31son of Maacah as chief and leader among his brothers, for he intended
- 7:34him to be his successor. He prudently distributed
- 7:39all his sons throughout the regions of Judah and Benjamin and throughout
- 7:43the fortified towns. He provided them with abundant food and he sought many
- 7:47wives for them. When the kingship
- 7:51of Rehoboam was firmly established and he grew,
- 7:55he abandoned the teaching of Hashem, he and all
- 7:59Israel with him.
- 8:02In the 5th year of King Rehoboam, King Shishak of Egypt
- 8:07marched against Jerusalem, for they had trespassed against
- 8:11Hashem. With 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen
- 8:15and innumerable troops who came with him from Egypt,
- 8:19Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites. He took the fortified
- 8:23towns of Judah and advanced on Jerusalem.
- 8:26Then Navi Shemaiah came to Rehoboam and the officers
- 8:30of Judah who had assembled in Jerusalem because of Shishak
- 8:35and said to them, Thus said Hashem: You have abandoned Me,
- 8:38so I am abandoning you to Shishak.
- 8:43Then the officers of Israel and the king humbled themselves and declared,
- 8:47Hashem is in the right. When Hashem
- 8:50saw that they had submitted, the Word of Hashem came to
- 8:54Shemaiah saying, Since they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy
- 8:58them but will grant them some measure of deliverance,
- 9:01and My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.
- 9:07They will be subject to him, and they will know the differences between serving
- 9:10Me and serving the kingdoms of the earth. King Shishak
- 9:16of Egypt marched against Jerusalem. He took away
- 9:19the treasures of the House of Hashem and the treasures of
- 9:23the royal palace. He took away everything.
- 9:26He took away the golden shields that Solomon had made.
- 9:30King Rehoboam had bronze shields made in their place,
- 9:34and entrusted them to the officers of the guard who guarded
- 9:38the entrance to the royal palace. Whenever the king entered the
- 9:42house of Hashem, the guards would carry them and then bring them back
- 9:45to the armory of the guards. After he had humbled
- 9:49himself, the anger of Hashem was averted, and He did
- 9:53not destroy him entirely. In Judah too good things were found.
- 9:58King Rehoboam grew strong in Jerusalem, and exercised
- 10:02kingship. Rehoboam was 41 years
- 10:06old when he became king, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem,
- 10:11the city Hashem had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel
- 10:15to establish His name there. His mother's name was Naamah
- 10:19the Ammonitess.
- 10:22He did what was wrong, for he had not set his heart to
- 10:26seek Hashem. The deeds of Rehoboam early and late are
- 10:30recorded in the Chronicles of Navi, Shemaiah,
- 10:34and Iddo the seer, in the manner of genealogy.
- 10:37There was continuous war between Rehoboam and
- 10:41Jeroboam. Rehoboam slept with his fathers and
- 10:45was buried in the City of David. His son Avijah
- 10:49succeeded him as king. In the 18th
- 10:53year of King Jeroboam, Avijah became king over
- 10:57Judah. He reigned 3 years in Jerusalem.
- 11:01His mother's name was Michalhu,
- 11:04daughter of Uriel of Gina. There was war between Aviah
- 11:09and Jeroboam. Aviah joined battle with a force
- 11:13of warriors, 400,000 picked men. Jeroboam arrayed
- 11:17for battle against him, 800,000 picked men,
- 11:21warriors. Aviah stood on top of Mount Zemaraim
- 11:26in the hill country of Ephraim and said, Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel.
- 11:30Surely you know that God of Israel gave David
- 11:33kingship over Israel forever to him and
- 11:37his sons by a covenant of salt.
- 11:40Jeroboam son of Nebat had been in the service of Solomon
- 11:44son of David, but he rose up and rebelled against his master.
- 11:50Riffraff and scoundrels gathered around him and pressed hard upon Rehoboam
- 11:55son of Solomon.
- 11:58Rehoboam was inexperienced and faint-hearted and could not stand
- 12:02up to them. Now you are bent on opposing the Kingdom
- 12:06of Hashem, which is in the charge of the sons of David,
- 12:10because you are a great multitude and possess the golden calves that Jeroboam
- 12:14made for you as gods. Did you not banish the Kohanim of Hashem,
- 12:19the sons of Aaron and the Levi'im, and like the peoples of
- 12:23the land appoint your own Kohanim, your own priests?
- 12:27Anyone who offered himself for ordination with a young bull
- 12:30of the herd and 7 rams became a Kohen of no gods.
- 12:35As for us, Hashem is our God and we have not
- 12:39forsaken Him. The Kohanim who minister to Hashem are the sons of
- 12:43Aaron and the Levi'im. Levi'im are there at their
- 12:47tasks. They offer burnt offerings in smoke each morning
- 12:50and each evening, and the aromatic incense, the rows
- 12:54of bread on the pure table. They kindle the golden
- 12:57menorah with its lamps burning each evening, for we keep
- 13:02the charge of Hashem our God while you have forsaken it.
- 13:05See, Hashem is with us as our chief,
- 13:09and His Kohanim have the trumpets for the sounding blasts against
- 13:13you, O children of Israel. Do not fight God of your fathers, because you
- 13:17will not succeed. Jeroboam, however,
- 13:21had directed the ambush to go around and come from the rear.
- 13:24Thus, the main body was in front of Judah while the
- 13:28ambush was behind.
- 13:31When Judah turned around and saw that the fighting was before and
- 13:35behind them,
- 13:38they cried out to Hashem and the Kohanim blew the trumpets.
- 13:42The men of Judah raised a shout, and when the men of Judah raised a
- 13:47shout, Hashem routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah
- 13:51and Judah. The Israelites fled before Judah,
- 13:55and Hashem delivered them into their hands.
- 13:58Abijah and his army inflicted a severe defeat
- 14:02on them. 500,000 men of Israel fell slain.
- 14:06The Israelites were crushed at that time, while the people
- 14:10of Judah triumphed because they relied on the God of their
- 14:14fathers. Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured
- 14:17some of his cities: Beth-el with its dependencies,
- 14:21Jeshanah with its dependencies, and Ephraim with its dependencies.
- 14:26Jeroboam could not muster strength again during the days of Abijah.
- 14:30Hashem struck him down and he died. But Abijah grew powerful,
- 14:35He married 14 wives and begat 22 sons and 16 daughters.
- 14:40The other events of Abijah's reign, his conduct and
- 14:44his acts, are recorded in the story of the Navi Edo.
- 14:47Abijah slept with his fathers and was buried in the City of David.
- 14:52His son Asa succeeded him as king.
- 14:56The land was untroubled for 10 years.
- 15:06Romans 8:22-39.
- 15:13For we know that the whole creation groans and travails
- 15:16in pain together until now. And not only they,
- 15:20but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
- 15:24even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the
- 15:28adoption To wit, the redemption of our body.
- 15:32For we are saved by hope, but hope that is seen is
- 15:35not hope, for what a man sees, why does he yet
- 15:39hope for? But if we hope for that we see not,
- 15:43then do we with patience wait for it.
- 15:48Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities,
- 15:52for we know not what we should pray, whereas we ought, but the Spirit
- 15:56itself makes intercession for us with groanings which
- 16:00cannot be uttered. And he that searches the hearts knows
- 16:04what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according
- 16:08to the will of God. And we know that all things
- 16:12work together for good to them that love God, to them
- 16:15who are called according to his purpose.
- 16:20For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestine
- 16:24to be conformed to the image of His Son,
- 16:28that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
- 16:33Moreover, whom He did predestine, them He also
- 16:37called; and whom He called, them He also
- 16:40justified; and whom He justified,
- 16:43them He also glorified. What shall we say
- 16:47then to these things? If God be for us, who can be against
- 16:51us? He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him
- 16:56up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all
- 17:00things? Who shall lay anything to
- 17:04the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifies.
- 17:08Who is he that condemns? It is Christ.
- 17:11That died, yes rather, that is risen again,
- 17:15who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession
- 17:19for us. Who shall separate
- 17:22us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation,
- 17:27or distress, or persecution, or famine,
- 17:30or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
- 17:35As it is written, for your sake we are killed all the
- 17:39day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
- 17:43Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors
- 17:46through Him who loved us.
- 17:50For I am persuaded that neither death nor
- 17:53life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers,
- 17:58nor things present nor things to come,
- 18:01nor height nor depth, nor any other creature shall
- 18:05be able to separate us from the love of God,
- 18:09which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 18:18Psalm 18:37-50.
- 18:21I have pursued my enemies and overtaken them; neither
- 18:25did I turn again till they were consumed. I have wounded them
- 18:29that they were not able to rise; They are fallen under my feet.
- 18:33For you have girded me with strength to the battle.
- 18:37You have subdued under me those that rose up against me. You have
- 18:42also given me the necks of my enemies that I might destroy them that
- 18:45hate me. They cried, but there was none to save them,
- 18:49even unto the Lord, but he answered them not.
- 18:53Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind.
- 18:57I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.
- 19:01You have delivered me from the strivings of the people, and you have
- 19:04made me the head of the heathen. A people whom I have not known
- 19:08shall serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me.
- 19:12The strangers shall submit themselves to me. The strangers
- 19:17shall fade away and be afraid out of their close places.
- 19:20The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and let the God of my
- 19:24salvation be exalted. It is God
- 19:27that avenges me and subdues the people under me.
- 19:31He delivers me from my enemies. Yes, You lift me up above
- 19:35those that rise up against me. You have delivered me
- 19:39from the violent man. Therefore will I give thanks
- 19:42unto You, O Lord, among the heathen and sing praises
- 19:46to Your name. Great deliverance gives He to
- 19:49His king and shows mercy to His anointed, to David and
- 19:53to his seed forevermore.
- 19:58Proverbs 19:27-29.
- 20:02Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causes to err
- 20:05from the words of knowledge. An ungodly witness scorns
- 20:09judgment, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.
- 20:13Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the
- 20:17back of fools. I want to speak
- 20:21to you today from our reading from 2 Chronicles 11 through 13,
- 20:25and actually I'm going to backtrack a little bit and go back to 2 Chronicles
- 20:29chapter 10.
- 20:33And in, in 2 Chronicles chapter 10, we see a
- 20:37kingdom split. Jeroboam,
- 20:41uh, leads the 10 tribes of the north And
- 20:44Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, leads the 2 tribes of the
- 20:48south, Judah and Benjamin. And so Israel comes before Jeroboam,
- 20:53the new king, and they say, hey, can you lighten up our burden?
- 20:57We have a heavy tax burden. Could you lighten up our
- 21:00burden? So when Jeroboam consults the elders,
- 21:04they say, you know, if you do that, if you're kind
- 21:08to them, then you will have their loyalty and their faithfulness. But then
- 21:12he also consults his peers, and his peers give him some very bad
- 21:16advice. They say, you should make the burden even heavier. And so
- 21:20he answers to them a day later and says,
- 21:23I will make your yoke heavy, and I will add to it. My father
- 21:26flogged you with whips, but I'll flog you with scorpions.
- 21:30And so Jeroboam, the leader of the 10 tribes of
- 21:33the north who put this request before him, in verse 16,
- 21:37chapter 10, verse 16, when all Israel that is the Northern
- 21:41Kingdom, saw that the king had not listened to them.
- 21:45The people answered the king, we have no portion in David,
- 21:49no share in Yishai's son. To your
- 21:53tents, O Israel! Now look to your own house, O David!
- 21:56So all Israel returned to their homes.
- 22:00And that is the kingdom split.
- 22:03The nation of Israel was split right down the middle between
- 22:09the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom.
- 22:14And so in verse 6, chapter 10, verse 6, it says,
- 22:18King Rehoboam took counsel with the elders who had served
- 22:21during the lifetime of his father, and he said, what answer should I give to
- 22:24these people? The Israel Bible commentary to this verse
- 22:28reads as follows: Upon assuming the throne after his father's
- 22:31death, Rehoboam is approached by representatives of the nation who
- 22:36request an easing of the tax burden that had been placed upon them by King
- 22:40Solomon. Rehoboam first consults the elders who had advised
- 22:44his father, but not liking the counsel they gave, he instead
- 22:48turns to the young people, his peers, his contemporaries.
- 22:52This was a breach of the principle, ask your father, he will inform
- 22:56you. Your elders, they will tell you. Rehoboam follows
- 23:00the advice of his young friends, and this leads to the split in
- 23:04the kingdom, set in the 10 tribes of the Kingdom of Israel on
- 23:08a very negative path of idolatry and sin.
- 23:12Had Rehoboam appreciated the meaning and importance of history
- 23:16and tradition instead of trying to assert himself and
- 23:19his reign over the nation, much evil might have been averted.
- 23:25Continuing on into chapter
- 23:2911,
- 23:32Rehoboam retreats back to Jerusalem and he
- 23:36mounts up a fighting force of fighting men and he gets
- 23:40ready to go on the attack against the Northern Kingdom,
- 23:44against Jeroboam and the 10 tribes of the north. And in verse 3,
- 23:47it says, say to Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king of Judah,
- 23:52and to all Israel and Judah and Benjamin. This is Shemaiah,
- 23:56a man of God, a prophet, And God is telling Shemaiah
- 24:00what to tell Rehoboam the king.
- 24:04So this is what Shemaiah's instructions were from the Lord.
- 24:08Thus says Hashem, you shall not set out to make war
- 24:11on your kinsmen. Let every man return to his home, for this
- 24:15thing has been brought about by me. They heeded
- 24:19the words of Hashem and refrained from marching against
- 24:23Jeroboam. The Israel Bible commentary to this verse reads
- 24:26as follows: Though the kingdom has split and 10
- 24:30tribes have rejected Rehoboam and the House of David,
- 24:34God does not want there to be a civil war between the 2 kingdoms.
- 24:39He reminds the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin that despite
- 24:43the rift, the members of both kingdoms are brothers, and they should therefore
- 24:48treat each other with peace and brotherhood. The split in the Kingdom is not ideal,
- 24:52and it pains Hashem to see different members of the nation of Israel
- 24:56at odds with each other. Instead, He longs
- 25:00for the time when once again one King shall be King
- 25:03of them all. Never again shall they be 2 nations,
- 25:07and never again shall they be divided into 2 kingdoms.
- 25:11From Ezekiel 37:22.
- 25:15With the establishment of the State of Israel, the ingathering
- 25:19of the exiles, and the return of some of the 10 tribes,
- 25:23we are beginning to witness the miraculous fulfillment of
- 25:28the unity between the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah.
- 25:37And then finally, as we get into chapter 13,
- 25:43I want to zoom in on chapter 13, verse 8. Now you
- 25:46are bent on opposing the kingdom of Hashem,
- 25:50which is in the charge of the sons of David, because you
- 25:54are a great multitude and possess the golden calves that Jeroboam
- 25:58made for you as gods. The Israel
- 26:02Bible commentary to this verse reads as follows.
- 26:05Abijah, who is now the king of the Southern Kingdom,
- 26:08he succeeded Rehoboam.
- 26:11Abijah understands that the reason he has arisen to
- 26:15the throne is to serve God. He tells Jeroboam
- 26:19that he rules the Kingdom of Hashem as the kings of Judah are from the
- 26:23line of David and they maintain the service of God
- 26:26in the Beit HaMikdash, the Temple, in Jerusalem.
- 26:30Abijah sees himself as the emissary of the Lord,
- 26:34the caretaker of His people, who is expected to lead
- 26:38them in the service of Hashem. Because he understands this, God grants
- 26:42him victory the triumph which was denied to his father
- 26:46Rehoboam, who was motivated by pride, not piety.
- 26:51This is an example of how success in the Land
- 26:55of Israel is dependent upon the recognition of
- 26:59God, of Hashem. As Asa declares
- 27:03in the next chapter, while the land is at our disposal because
- 27:07we turned to Hashem, Our God.
- 27:13That's all I have for today, and we'll see you tomorrow.
