Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Evolutionary Beings and Static Typal Beings in the Universal Manifestation

- 0:00As with many words in the English language, the word soul
- 0:05has various nuanced meanings. As Srioro Bindo explains,
- 0:09English as a very fluid language can at times be very imprecise
- 0:14in this way. However, this is just one of the
- 0:18issues Srioro Bindo takes up here in the citation below.
- 0:22One very interesting aspect is the implication that the
- 0:26evolutionary process takes place on Earth in an earthly body, and
- 0:31the beings that inhabit other realms, including various gods
- 0:35and demons as we term them, are typal beings that are not
- 0:40subject to evolution in their native realms.
- 0:44Rather, if they at some point determine that they want to
- 0:47participate in the evolutionary process, they need to take birth
- 0:52in the world and undergo the processes that pertain here.
- 0:58Typal beings exist in their own native worlds and act within the
- 1:01framework of those worlds. They tend to be static and do
- 1:05not change over time. Depending on their ability to
- 1:09communicate into our world, they may influence action here and
- 1:15even manifest some form here in order to do that, including
- 1:19through what is called possession of a living being.
- 1:23We may understand the concept from the unrelated world of
- 1:26video games which use NPCS, non player characters to influence
- 1:33the action and direction of the game.
- 1:35Those NPCS do not undergo the kind of changes that the players
- 1:39experience. Similarly, whether we turn them
- 1:44gods, angels, demons, asuras, rakshasas or vital beings of
- 1:49some sort, we can experience their impact while they remain
- 1:54unchanged in their character and nature in our own world and
- 1:58lives. The unique difference between an
- 2:02evolutionary being and a non evolutionary being turns out to
- 2:06be the existence of the soul and the development of the soul
- 2:10individuality in the form of the psychic being which carries the
- 2:16evolutionary growth from life to life as universal manifestation
- 2:21unfolds and develops, Sriorvindo writes.
- 2:25Quote. The word soul has various
- 2:28meanings according to the context.
- 2:31It may mean the Purusha supporting the formation of
- 2:34prakruti, which we call a being, though the proper word would be
- 2:39rather a becoming. It may mean, on the other hand,
- 2:43specifically the psychic being in an evolutionary creature like
- 2:47man. It may mean the spark of the
- 2:50divine, which has been put into matter by the descent of the
- 2:54divine into the material world and which upholds all evolving
- 2:59formation. Here there is and can be no
- 3:03psychic being in a non evolutionary creature like the
- 3:07Asura. There can be none in a God who
- 3:10does not need one for his existence.
- 3:13But what the God has is a perusha and a procrity or energy
- 3:17of nature of that perusha. If any being of the typo worlds
- 3:22wants to evolve, he has to come down to earth and take a human
- 3:27body and accept to share in the evolution.
- 3:30It is because they do not want to do this that the vital beings
- 3:34try to possess men so that they may enjoy the materialities of
- 3:38physical life without having the burden of the evolution or the
- 3:43process of conversion in which it culminates.
