- 0:21San Francis Ford one of his earliest career successes, but he recently
- 0:25released on Conan O'Brien's podcast that he still carries a bit of
- 0:28a grudge against one of the city's most notable directors, Francis Ford
- 0:32Copelua. On The episode of Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend released Monday,
- 0:38Douglas made an appearance to promote his new memoir, One Halleluvah Ride.
- 0:42The conversation with O'Brien turned toward the iconic early nineteen seventies crime
- 0:46drama, The Streets of San Francisco, which ran for one twenty one
- 0:50episodes over the course of five seasons. O'Brien noted that, as a
- 0:54young lad, he would occasionally stay up late to watch the show,
- 0:57or catch it in reruns. During that period, a decade before Douglas's
- 1:02breakout film role in Romancing the Stone, there was a greater divide
- 1:06between actors in television and film. What's fascinating to me is your
- 1:10don't look down on the streets of San
- 1:12Francisco said O'Brien, which you could see some actors thinking, Oh, I'm
- 1:16doing T V, episodic T V. I want to become a movie
- 1:19star. What am I doing this for? That was not your attitude.
- 1:23It turns out that negative attitude toward television was one still held
- 1:27by the city's most notable director. San Francisco had its prestigious directors
- 1:33led by Francis Ford Capella and everything, and they wanted nothing to
- 1:36do with us, Douglett said. And I remember they first season that
- 1:40we were up in San Francisco, them, were sting on us in
- 1:43terms of The press, and how Southern California is coming up here,
- 1:47hurting our city and all of that. Then the ratings came In
- 1:51the show was a success, and they realized it's a love letter,
- 1:54it's a love letter to San Francisco. So they all turned it
- 1:57around the next year. We didn't forgive them, we didn't forgive them.
- 2:02After four years working on the streets of San Francisco, Douglas asked
- 2:05to get out of his contract in order to take a new
- 2:07path as a producer on the now iconic film One Flew Over
- 2:11the Cuckoo's Nest. In the early 90s, he would go on to
- 2:14star in another San Francisco set project, Basic Instinct, as well as
- 2:18play a key role in Marvel's Ant Man franchise, which was also
- 2:21filmed locally. Despite his salty comments, Douglas appears to have buried the
- 2:26hatchet with Coppola on at least one occasion when he served as
- 2:30a producer on Coppola's nineteen ninety seven legal drama The Rainmaker.
