- 1:08Speaker 2: The live transmission has begun, and we're into the final
- 1:12Speaker 2: hour of hell.
- 1:32Speaker 11: What's up, and welcome to Movie Mountdown's Attack of the
- 1:34Speaker 11: Killer soundtrack. I'm Brian, and this week we have not
- 1:37Speaker 11: just a special guest, but a whole band of special guests.
- 1:41Speaker 11: And that band is Sarah Shook and the Disarmers. Now
- 1:44Speaker 11: when I first heard about the band, well, the initial description,
- 1:48Speaker 11: it used a word that I found more than a
- 1:51Speaker 11: little concerning. The C-Word. In fact, the big C, as
- 1:55Speaker 11: far as I'm concerned. Yes, the word was country. And
- 1:59Speaker 11: if any of you have been listening to this show
- 2:01Speaker 11: in the past, you've probably heard my snide comments, and
- 2:04Speaker 11: you know that I have issues with so-called country music,
- 2:08Speaker 11: specifically what passes for modern country music today and for
- 2:11Speaker 11: the last couple of decades. But the saving grace for
- 2:14Speaker 11: me was the entire phrase used in the band's description
- 2:18Speaker 11: was country punk. And that intrigued me enough to want
- 2:21Speaker 11: to learn more about Sarah and the band as a whole.
- 2:25Speaker 11: So as I began to listen to their songs, what
- 2:27Speaker 11: I realized was, not only did they have that little
- 2:30Speaker 11: punk edge that was promised, but the country vein that
- 2:33Speaker 11: ran through all of the music was old school country.
- 2:37Speaker 11: Like hard drinking and occasionally bitter and heartbroken country. The
- 2:42Speaker 11: kind of country legacy that goes back generations. And that
- 2:46Speaker 11: is the only type of country that I've ever really
- 2:48Speaker 11: responded to. In addition to that, a lot of their
- 2:51Speaker 11: songs are also just plain catchy and fun, and that
- 2:55Speaker 11: is more important than any genre breakdowns or industry buzzwords.
- 2:59Speaker 11: So by then I was more than happy to get
- 3:00Speaker 11: a chance to sit down and talk with the band
- 3:02Speaker 11: and get to know a little more about them and
- 3:05Speaker 11: how they all found their way to each other, and overall,
- 3:08Speaker 11: how they found the sound that they all came to
- 3:11Speaker 11: create together. Plus, in setting things up beforehand, I explained
- 3:14Speaker 11: what I do and how I like to discuss songs
- 3:17Speaker 11: from movies that they enjoyed or were influenced by, and
- 3:20Speaker 11: they were totally on top of things and actually sent
- 3:22Speaker 11: me a rundown of all these great songs that we
- 3:25Speaker 11: definitely needed to discuss. And so that is what we're
- 3:29Speaker 11: going to do right now, as we go join the
- 3:31Speaker 11: band and find out more about them and eventually dive
- 3:34Speaker 11: into their list of soundtrack picks. Alright, so let's go
- 3:55Speaker 11: around the table and just kind of introduce everybody and
- 3:58Speaker 11: give them a good idea of who's in the band
- 4:00Speaker 11: first and foremost.
- 4:01Speaker 5: I'm Aaron Oliver. I'm the bass player.
- 4:04Speaker 12: I'm Sarah Shook. I'm the singer and guitar player.
- 4:08Speaker 11: My name's Kevin McLean.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I play drums.
- 4:11Speaker 13: I'm Phil Sullivan.
- 4:12Speaker 11: I play pedal steel, guitar.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And Eric Peterson. I play guitar.
- 4:17Speaker 11: Alright. Well, I figure you've, I'm assuming at this point,
- 4:22Speaker 11: done tons of versions of this and influences a million
- 4:26Speaker 11: times over. So I was trying to come up with something,
- 4:29Speaker 11: just a different way to enter in, and especially since
- 4:31Speaker 11: we kind of blur the lines with music and movies
- 4:34Speaker 11: and everything. I was trying to think, where did your
- 4:37Speaker 11: influences come from? As far as TV or radio or
- 4:42Speaker 11: just kind of hanging out at the record store? Where
- 4:45Speaker 11: did everybody kind of find their way into whatever pop
- 4:47Speaker 11: culture stuff they started getting into when you were kids?
- 4:51Speaker 5: As far as playing music?
- 4:52Speaker 11: Anything, really. But yeah, I mean, I guess music is
- 4:54Speaker 11: where you're eventually going to end up, I would assume.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:59Speaker 5: I had hippie parents who had huge record collections, and
- 5:04Speaker 5: they listened to all kinds of music, and they would...
- 5:07Speaker 5: Whenever we went on road trips, that was my favorite thing.
- 5:09Speaker 5: We'd go on road trips, and we had this big van,
- 5:10Speaker 5: and I would lay in the back, and there were
- 5:12Speaker 5: these little homemade speaker boxes that had the 6x9 Gensine,
- 5:17Speaker 5: you know, three-way speakers with a little tweeter mounted up front,
- 5:20Speaker 5: the whole thing, and... They would listen to cassette tapes
- 5:24Speaker 5: of music they had recorded, and they would smoke joints.
- 5:28Speaker 1: While they were on these.
- 5:30Speaker 11: The hell you say.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 5:32Speaker 11: Or as I said, they would roll numbers. They would
- 5:38Speaker 11: actually say that. Should we roll some numbers for the road?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Sure.
- 5:43Speaker 11: You didn't question it at that point.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Yeah, and I was young, and I think that You know,
- 5:48Speaker 5: even at that age, I think that you, as a child,
- 5:51Speaker 5: when you're in a car with somebody smoking a joint,
- 5:53Speaker 5: that you get a little.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Bit of a contact high.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Because I remember I used to just sit back there
- 5:58Speaker 5: and just enjoy that music so much. And they listened to, like,
- 6:03Speaker 5: you know, they listened to King Crimson and David Gilmour,
- 6:07Speaker 5: Pink Floyd, all that kind of stuff.
- 6:09Speaker 11: We were just tripping out at that point.
- 6:12Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Woo!
- 6:15Speaker 12: Yeah, I didn't really have much of a... intro at
- 6:18Speaker 12: all to pop culture.
- 6:19Speaker 11: That's what I kind of wanted to hear on you,
- 6:21Speaker 11: is what the tales of your upbringing is going to
- 6:24Speaker 11: be a little different than most kids.
- 6:26Speaker 12: I was homeschooled all the way through and had very,
- 6:29Speaker 12: very strict conservative Christian parents.
- 6:31Speaker 5: The other kind of hippie.
- 6:34Speaker 11: The squares.
- 6:37Speaker 12: Yeah, so I mean, I didn't even really start listening
- 6:39Speaker 12: to what would be considered secular mainstream music until like
- 6:43Speaker 12: my late teens. And I had very little guidance, so
- 6:50Speaker 12: it was always just kind of me finding things and
- 6:54Speaker 12: trying them out with no frame of reference at all.
- 6:58Speaker 12: So yeah, the first CD I ever bought, I went
- 7:01Speaker 12: into a store and just blindly was like, oh, I
- 7:05Speaker 12: like the cover of this.
- 7:07Speaker 11: I've played that game, yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 15: I'll get it.
- 7:09Speaker 12: This will be my first CD I ever bought, and
- 7:10Speaker 12: that was Interpol's Antics CD. which I still have that copy.
- 7:15Speaker 12: I was actually listening to it the other day as
- 7:17Speaker 12: I was moving things into my new place and cleaning.
- 7:21Speaker 12: But yeah, after that, it's just been a matter of
- 7:24Speaker 12: getting used to the whole new interface of Spotify's adjusted playlists,
- 7:31Speaker 12: which opens a whole new world. There's a lot of
- 7:34Speaker 12: tools you can use now to find similar artists to.
- 7:37Speaker 1: What you like.
- 7:37Speaker 11: More than we can even fathom, I feel.
- 7:39Speaker 12: Yeah, it's like trying to pick out chips in the
- 7:41Speaker 12: chip aisle.
- 7:42Speaker 11: Were you finding, were you discovering things like way out
- 7:45Speaker 11: of time? Just because you came in so much later
- 7:48Speaker 11: than most kids probably.
- 7:50Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 7:50Speaker 11: You're like, this album's great. I'm like, yeah, we bought
- 7:52Speaker 11: that like a decade ago. Yeah. I was a little kid.
- 7:57Speaker 17: Well, I guess my parents were, they used to be hippies.
- 8:01Speaker 17: Once a hippie, always a hippie.
- 8:04Speaker 13: So they did listen to a lot, yeah, they were
- 8:05Speaker 13: musicians and they did listen to a lot of different
- 8:07Speaker 13: types of music.
- 8:08Speaker 17: So they had a pretty good record collection.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Liked it.
- 8:11Speaker 11: Old movies and stuff like that. So I guess it
- 8:13Speaker 11: was definitely down to my folks.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:15Speaker 17: As far as getting introduced to what I ended up
- 8:18Speaker 17: liking and going from there.
- 8:20Speaker 11: Were they, on any of them, were they sort of restrictive?
- 8:23Speaker 11: I guess the hippies, they loosen up the rules usually, but.
- 8:26Speaker 13: Well, my dad's taste in music kind of ends around 1970,
- 8:29Speaker 13: so after that.
- 8:31Speaker 11: Still?
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Always.
- 8:33Speaker 17: But no, not restrictive.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I wouldn't say that.
- 8:35Speaker 11: Because definitely once you get into movies, there are different...
- 8:39Speaker 11: Some parents don't. I'm the product of they didn't really care.
- 8:42Speaker 11: We got that first wave of cable TV, and I
- 8:45Speaker 11: grew up watching things I probably did not need.
- 8:47Speaker 1: To be seeing.
- 8:48Speaker 11: So it's a mixture of that, too. So, yeah, music,
- 8:51Speaker 11: you have a little more free reign. But, yeah, movies
- 8:54Speaker 11: warp you in a different way.
- 8:57Speaker 5: My dad forbade me to listen to Frank Zappa for
- 8:59Speaker 5: a while.
- 9:00Speaker 11: I always wanted to listen to him.
- 9:02Speaker 5: He was like, nope.
- 9:03Speaker 11: For specific reasons or just because he's a weird guy?
- 9:06Speaker 1: Well, you know.
- 9:07Speaker 5: I'm sure it was lyrical content.
- 9:14Speaker 11: Well, I guess as you got into all of these things,
- 9:18Speaker 11: were you drawn towards specific genres? Because it is interesting
- 9:23Speaker 11: once we got to what the band has become now,
- 9:26Speaker 11: because so, again, I think I initially was drawn way
- 9:29Speaker 11: more towards the punk part of the description, because country
- 9:33Speaker 11: has become a thing that I had have so many
- 9:36Speaker 11: issues with specifically modern country that like it's it feels
- 9:40Speaker 11: like it's really hard to even declare yourself that or
- 9:44Speaker 11: or sometimes be part of that scene when there's so
- 9:47Speaker 11: many different levels again it's specifically the modern version of
- 9:51Speaker 11: what is country now so i don't know did you
- 9:54Speaker 11: immediately start gearing towards different genres when you started playing
- 9:59Speaker 11: music any.
- 10:01Speaker 12: Well, I think that we kind of, my first band,
- 10:05Speaker 12: Eric and Phil, were both a part of Sarah Shook
- 10:08Speaker 12: and the Devil. And I mean, I don't feel like
- 10:11Speaker 12: we set out like with this mission in mind to
- 10:14Speaker 12: be like, we're going to be an old school country band.
- 10:17Speaker 12: But it's just kind of like what the songs required,
- 10:20Speaker 12: you know, when everybody got together and we started learning
- 10:22Speaker 12: the songs, that's what, what it was.
- 10:24Speaker 11: That's what made sense.
- 10:26Speaker 13: I think part of it too, is just being a,
- 10:29Speaker 13: being a musician and trying to like do something different
- 10:32Speaker 13: and grow in that respect. Like Eric's always been really
- 10:34Speaker 13: good at the Travis picking style country stuff. And that
- 10:38Speaker 13: was largely incorporated in that band as well as I
- 10:41Speaker 13: was trying to start to play steel guitar at the time.
- 10:44Speaker 17: So that kind of worked its way in as well.
- 10:46Speaker 11: Yeah. Luckily time wise, I think it's kind of come
- 10:50Speaker 11: full circle again and the, the alt country became a thing,
- 10:54Speaker 11: but then even just people who embraced old school country,
- 10:56Speaker 11: I think it, it, it found a home with people
- 10:59Speaker 11: that I, again, there was a, there was a dark
- 11:01Speaker 11: period there where you weren't finding anything useful coming out.
- 11:05Speaker 11: So it's, it's really amazing to see people that, definitely
- 11:09Speaker 11: grew up like listening to that and then what they've
- 11:12Speaker 11: discovered ever since then have attached themselves to it so much.
- 11:15Speaker 11: So it's, yeah, it's, it's great. So on that note,
- 11:18Speaker 11: did you want to kind of give people a taste
- 11:20Speaker 11: of the band? Is there, what's, what's a good song
- 11:22Speaker 11: to kind of intro people into? Hmm.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I don't think a.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Good intro to the band song.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Huh?
- 11:30Speaker 17: Something about us.
- 11:34Speaker 12: Uh, maybe good as gold or heal me.
- 11:38Speaker 17: Something like that.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Or a.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I.
- 11:43Speaker 18: Can't remember.
- 11:44Speaker 11: Any song on the first two albums.
- 12:08Speaker 19: I can just stop and lose.
- 12:12Speaker 15: I'm afraid of losing.
- 12:16Speaker 20: Losing everything to you. My heart, my pride, the wreck inside.
- 12:27Speaker 21: Nothing on this jail box except the blues. Baby, if
- 12:33Speaker 21: you go, it's all over for good.
- 12:40Speaker 15: And I'm as good as gone. You're as good as gold.
- 12:58Speaker 15: I'm as good as gold.
- 13:09Speaker 3: I'm worn out from worry.
- 13:14Speaker 19: Not worry over you. Cause with my troubles mine, you'll
- 13:23Speaker 19: be just fine. In whatever world you choose.
- 13:29Speaker 15: Baby, if you go, it's over for good.
- 13:33Speaker 3: And I'm as good as gone.
- 13:50Speaker 14: You're as good.
- 13:52Speaker 3: As gold I'm.
- 13:55Speaker 11: As good as gold.
- 14:19Speaker 19: It's all over for good And I'm as good as
- 14:26Speaker 19: gone No, it won't feel wrong Till the wrong song
- 14:32Speaker 19: comes on At the.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Right time You're.
- 14:38Speaker 15: As good as gold.
- 15:01Speaker 22: Ain't nothing here can fill. But I just keep thinking
- 15:07Speaker 22: surely the whiskey will.
- 15:11Speaker 15: And if I keep.
- 15:13Speaker 22: On drinking till daybreak. Finds my windowsill.
- 15:32Speaker 21: Cause I've been doing wrong.
- 15:35Speaker 3: My whole life long.
- 15:38Speaker 20: I've had a bad feeling I got a world so.
- 15:46Speaker 23: Deep inside me My whole lifetime.
- 15:53Speaker 14: Ain't enough time.
- 16:36Speaker 22: No man-made medicine can cure But I just keep thinking
- 16:43Speaker 22: Surely the whiskey will.
- 16:48Speaker 15: And if I keep on drinking.
- 16:51Speaker 19: Till daybreak Stops the whippoorwill.
- 17:00Speaker 15: Surely the whiskey will.
- 17:10Speaker 18: I've been doing wrong my whole.
- 17:14Speaker 19: Life long I've had.
- 17:17Speaker 18: A bad feeling I got a world so deep inside
- 17:24Speaker 18: me My whole lifetime.
- 17:29Speaker 24: Ain't enough time.
- 17:49Speaker 11: All right, so those were loaded up just as Sarah
- 17:51Speaker 11: called them. That was Good as Gold, followed by Heal Me.
- 17:55Speaker 11: Of course, by this week's guest, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers.
- 18:01Speaker 25: Hi, this is Rick from Southern Culture on the Skids,
- 18:03Speaker 25: and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 18:06Speaker 16: I'll call you.

- 18:54Speaker 27: What?
- 18:55Speaker 11: You don't want to run out to Heine Brothers right now?
- 18:57Speaker 8: Actually, now that you mention it, I'm drinking some fine
- 19:00Speaker 8: coffee here, but I feel like enjoying a nice hot
- 19:03Speaker 8: cup from my local Heine Brothers might actually be an
- 19:06Speaker 8: even better idea.
- 19:07Speaker 11: Well, really, you don't even have to leave the house.
- 19:09Speaker 11: You could just have it ordered right to your doorstep.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Really? Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 8: I can do that now?
- 19:14Speaker 11: It's not just something you can do. You can also
- 19:17Speaker 11: get a deal from your friends at Movie Meltdown.
- 19:20Speaker 8: No way. Movie Meltdown? That's the show we're on, right?
- 19:23Speaker 11: Yeah, this one right now.
- 19:24Speaker 8: Oh, that's awesome. Hey, insert a sound of me kicking
- 19:26Speaker 8: over this table with this substandard coffee.
- 19:29Speaker 1: There. There.
- 19:30Speaker 8: Right there. Yeah, you heard it. And then let's run out,
- 19:34Speaker 8: jump in the car, and then screech sound effect as
- 19:36Speaker 8: we head on down to our local Heine Brothers.
- 19:40Speaker 11: There.
- 19:43Speaker 8: Man, subtle. Subtle segue.
- 19:47Speaker 11: I want to tell you about the Heine Brothers coffee subscription.

- 20:37Speaker 11: They gave me sort of a heads up of some
- 20:38Speaker 11: of your film choices and the music tie-ins, so I
- 20:42Speaker 11: can kind of throw them out there. I just wanted
- 20:44Speaker 11: to get everybody's sort of take on how you found
- 20:47Speaker 11: these or the reasons that you were just so drawn
- 20:50Speaker 11: to them. So, yeah, I've got most of them here
- 20:52Speaker 11: just to run down. So, obviously, everybody kind of found
- 20:57Speaker 11: a good Marconi to throw in there.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 11: Can't miss what we were talking about. Yeah, it's kind
- 21:03Speaker 11: of hard to go wrong with that altogether.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:06Speaker 11: Fellini one I had to look into. I was not
- 21:10Speaker 11: as familiar with that one. Is that one of those
- 21:13Speaker 11: that you saw the movie and were just drawn to it?
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah. Absolutely. I can't remember. I may have
- 21:22Speaker 1: watched it twice back to back. But when that scene
- 21:26Speaker 1: came up, I was like, oh my gosh, this is great.
- 21:31Speaker 11: And then, of course, they don't put that on the soundtrack. Right, yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Gotta get the soundtrack.
- 21:36Speaker 11: So now we have to dig, and again, the wonders
- 21:39Speaker 11: of the internet just deliver everything to you. So this
- 21:41Speaker 11: is Saragina La Rumba, and as we mentioned, it is
- 21:44Speaker 11: not featured on the 8 1⁄2 soundtrack, because Eric told
- 21:47Speaker 11: me he bought that soundtrack specifically for this song, and
- 21:50Speaker 11: it wasn't on there. So this song that you're about
- 21:53Speaker 11: to hear is the one featured in the movie itself.
- 21:56Speaker 11: So when you hear wind and ocean sounds slightly going
- 21:59Speaker 11: on in the background... Well, now you'll know why. This
- 22:02Speaker 11: is Saragina La Rumba.
- 22:05Speaker 3: ¶ ¶.
- 24:13Speaker 11: The whole wide world is kind of amazing. And like that,
- 24:17Speaker 11: that use that you specifically like kind of pick the
- 24:20Speaker 11: one from stranger than fiction version. So hearing like the
- 24:24Speaker 11: intro with Will Ferrell of all people performing it. And
- 24:28Speaker 11: then as it kind of just kicks into the real
- 24:30Speaker 11: original version, like that's, Powerful. It's a great mixture.
- 24:35Speaker 15: Do you play?
- 24:36Speaker 1: Not really.
- 24:37Speaker 11: I only know one song.
- 24:38Speaker 15: Oh, play it.
- 24:40Speaker 5: No, I don't know it that well, actually.
- 24:42Speaker 11: No, come on.
- 24:43Speaker 10: I promise I'm not going to laugh at you.
- 24:44Speaker 15: Play it.
- 24:46Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 24:46Speaker 5: Maybe some other time.
- 24:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 25:08Speaker 10: Just to find out Maybe she's in the apartments Where
- 25:17Speaker 10: the Caribbean sea.
- 25:19Speaker 15: Is blue.
- 25:39Speaker 10: Weeping on a tropical moon at night. Nobody talked about you.
- 25:47Speaker 10: Go the whole wide world. Go the whole wide world.
- 25:51Speaker 10: Just to find it. Go the whole wide world. Go
- 25:56Speaker 10: the whole wide world. To find out where they hide it.
- 26:01Speaker 10: Go the whole wide world. Go the whole wide world.
- 26:05Speaker 10: Just to find it. Why am I hanging around in
- 26:17Speaker 10: the rain out here Trying to pick up a girl
- 26:23Speaker 10: Why are my eyes filling up with this lonely tear
- 26:27Speaker 10: When this girl is.
- 26:29Speaker 14: All alone I call the whole wide world I call
- 26:33Speaker 14: the whole wide world This is mine I call the
- 26:38Speaker 14: whole wide world I call the whole wide world I'll
- 26:46Speaker 14: call the whole wide world. I'll call the whole wide
- 26:48Speaker 14: world just to find her. I'll call the whole wide world.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I'll call the whole wide world.
- 27:08Speaker 11: Which that's, it's one of those I saw that in
- 27:11Speaker 11: the theater, I believe. And I don't think people then
- 27:14Speaker 11: knew what to do. It's like it slowly found a
- 27:16Speaker 11: fan base that it's a really cool movie. But yeah,
- 27:19Speaker 11: nobody knew what to do with it because it wasn't
- 27:21Speaker 11: any conventional.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Which movie is this?
- 27:24Speaker 11: Stranger than Fiction. It's, yeah. And that's most people's take
- 27:28Speaker 11: on it. They're like, wait, what? Because it's not really
- 27:30Speaker 11: a Will Ferrell comedy.
- 27:32Speaker 25: Right.
- 27:33Speaker 11: But it stars Will Ferrell.
- 27:34Speaker 1: It's.
- 27:35Speaker 11: Romantic lead is maggie gyllenhaal like it's a lot of
- 27:38Speaker 11: weird things mixed together and like people just did not
- 27:41Speaker 11: know what to do with it at the time but
- 27:42Speaker 11: it's yeah that's a great great scene and again any
- 27:47Speaker 11: any zither music you work in the third man all right.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah yeah that was uh i mean third man was
- 27:54Speaker 1: great but i watched it on dvd and the extras
- 27:58Speaker 1: were all about how how um They came across this
- 28:03Speaker 1: guy playing the zither in a local bar or something
- 28:08Speaker 1: and enlisted him to do the soundtrack.
- 28:11Speaker 11: Yeah. I'm assuming you'll work in as much zither as
- 28:13Speaker 11: possible from this, you know.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:17Speaker 11: That's what was missing from the band. That's right. That's
- 28:20Speaker 11: all it said. And then, yeah, Air, the Virgin Suicides.
- 28:25Speaker 11: That's another one of those. When I heard... and then
- 28:28Speaker 11: I think the other one of theirs that came out
- 28:30Speaker 11: around that same time is Virgin Suicides. It did seem
- 28:33Speaker 11: like they were just kind of so fully formed and
- 28:36Speaker 11: had found this specific sound and I expected them to
- 28:40Speaker 11: kind of get a little bigger. They have their fan
- 28:44Speaker 11: base again, but I don't think they ever fully hit,
- 28:47Speaker 11: but that's an amazing soundtrack.
- 28:48Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 28:49Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 29:05Speaker 3: I'm a high school lover And you're my favorite flavor.
- 29:35Speaker 7: Love is all. all my soul You're my playground love guitar.
- 29:44Speaker 28: Solo Yet my hands are shaking I feel my body remains.
- 30:32Speaker 7: 10's no matter I'm on fire On the playground now
- 30:41Speaker 7: guitar solo.
- 31:03Speaker 28: You're the piece of gold That flushes all my soul
- 31:06Speaker 28: Extra time.
- 31:33Speaker 7: On the ground You're my playground love In the town.
- 32:13Speaker 17: No one could understand how Mrs.
- 32:14Speaker 29: Lisbon and Mr.
- 32:15Speaker 13: Lisbon, our math teacher, had produced such beautiful creatures.
- 32:18Speaker 11: Again, we have Life Aquatic, which we've had a lot
- 32:21Speaker 11: of crossover with the Wests. We actually have, in this town,
- 32:27Speaker 11: there is a West Fest convention. that has been going
- 32:30Speaker 11: on and they will get together and have different bands,
- 32:33Speaker 11: some local, some kind of regional, just recreate songs from
- 32:37Speaker 11: Wes Anderson movies. So we've covered all, we've done at
- 32:41Speaker 11: least two different episodes from West Fest over the years.
- 32:44Speaker 11: So I've, yeah, I've, I've heard a lot of Wes
- 32:46Speaker 11: Anderson music and it is, it is, he is one
- 32:49Speaker 11: of those like go-to filmmakers now that like when he starts,
- 32:53Speaker 11: it's almost like he picks the soundtrack as he's going,
- 32:57Speaker 11: maybe as he's writing the thing. It's, So, yeah, were
- 32:59Speaker 11: there any specific David Bowie covers that were your favorite?
- 33:06Speaker 17: Oh, I don't know. He did Five Years and that,
- 33:12Speaker 17: which I really liked.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. It's a great, great version. Yeah.
- 33:17Speaker 17: That was your favorite?
- 33:19Speaker 11: All of them.
- 33:20Speaker 30: Muito tempo eu fico A viver pelos mares Diving deep
- 33:32Speaker 30: in coral.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Reefs My mission in this world is.
- 33:37Speaker 27: To search for animals Diving in the dark with real
- 33:44Speaker 27: dangers And that's why now.
- 34:00Speaker 30: Que eu cheguei aqui Nada vai me tentar A fazer
- 34:23Speaker 30: E nunca fico rico That's why I scream Today I
- 34:34Speaker 30: fry you On the sea, the.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Horizon I admire the cais When the wind is calm
- 34:42Speaker 3: Everything stays.
- 34:46Speaker 1: In peace.
- 35:00Speaker 30: Eu estou nessa trilha E não sei quanto tempo faz
- 35:06Speaker 30: Eu não vejo sentido Mas nos meus ideais E agora
- 35:18Speaker 30: que eu fiz Um acorde maior Pra cantar pra você
- 35:24Speaker 30: Minha angústia e dor Não me deixe aqui Sem carinho
- 35:30Speaker 30: e só Venha viver comigo Venha ser meu amor Porque
- 35:35Speaker 30: eu não vivo a five years Quase não vi nada
- 35:40Speaker 30: nesses five years Estar no mar azul é meu viver
- 35:45Speaker 30: a five years E de norte a sul é minha
- 35:50Speaker 30: sina five years Porque eu não vivo a five years
- 35:58Speaker 30: Quase não vi nada nesses five years Estar.
- 36:02Speaker 15: No mar azul é meu viver a.
- 36:04Speaker 31: Five years E de norte a sul é minha sina
- 36:09Speaker 31: five years Porque eu não vivo a five years Quase
- 36:16Speaker 31: não vi nada nesses five years Estar no mar azul
- 36:22Speaker 31: é minha sina five years E de noite a sua
- 36:26Speaker 31: e meu viver Five years Five years Five years Five years.
- 36:58Speaker 30: Five years.
- 37:07Speaker 12: The scene where they arrive on the island and they're
- 37:09Speaker 12: all in their wetsuits and there's that 80s Casio keyboard
- 37:14Speaker 12: music playing and they're like, there's someone in the coat check.
- 37:17Speaker 11: It's one of my favorite scenes ever.
- 37:19Speaker 17: That's the only great thing about that soundtrack. All that
- 37:22Speaker 17: stuff is mixed in with.
- 37:23Speaker 13: That really high Casio keyboard stuff like that.
- 37:27Speaker 17: The kind of thing where you press a button and.
- 37:29Speaker 11: It plays half the song.
- 37:32Speaker 1: The SK-1.
- 37:32Speaker 11: I have one of those. Everything should be composed on
- 37:35Speaker 11: the Casio SK-1.
- 37:36Speaker 13: We've got a great act going.
- 37:38Speaker 11: Robert and Rufus.
- 37:41Speaker 12: I play the Casio SK-1 and Rufus sings.
- 37:44Speaker 17: Problem is, he only sings when he wants to.
- 37:46Speaker 11: But with this Casio, I can record a sample of
- 37:49Speaker 11: him whenever he's in the mood.
- 37:51Speaker 31: Come on, Rufus.
- 37:52Speaker 12: Got it.
- 37:55Speaker 11: Whenever i want rufus to hit it i just.
- 37:57Speaker 8: Hit this button oh the.
- 37:59Speaker 11: Casio sk1 sampling keyboard because.
- 38:01Speaker 2: The show must go on you know.
- 38:04Speaker 17: Rufus the sack could be a single but.
- 38:06Speaker 11: Yeah then the again lebowski i've seen more than enough
- 38:09Speaker 11: lebowski fest in our town as well um but yeah
- 38:12Speaker 11: that that is the the the man in me is
- 38:16Speaker 11: one that's like it's so unconventional for what we're used
- 38:20Speaker 11: to what became more like well-known dylan stuff so that's
- 38:24Speaker 11: again kind of picking a different mood right and is
- 38:27Speaker 11: so kind of perfect as far as setting the tone
- 38:30Speaker 11: for what's about to happen in the rest of that
- 38:32Speaker 11: movie yeah.
- 38:51Speaker 26: Man in me will do nearly any task And ask
- 39:07Speaker 26: for compensation There's a little he would ask Take a
- 39:13Speaker 26: woman like you To get through To.
- 39:18Speaker 11: The man in me.
- 39:27Speaker 25: All around my door I think to myself I might
- 39:33Speaker 25: not take it anymore Take a woman like your kind
- 39:40Speaker 25: to find the man in me.
- 39:49Speaker 15: What a wonderful feeling.
- 39:54Speaker 25: Just to know that you are near It sets.
- 40:01Speaker 26: My heart a-reeling.
- 40:06Speaker 15: From my toes up to my.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Ears A man in.
- 40:14Speaker 25: Me will hide sometimes To keep from being seen But
- 40:20Speaker 25: that's just because he doesn't want to turn into some machine.
- 40:26Speaker 25: Take a woman like you to get through the man
- 40:31Speaker 25: in me.
- 40:32Speaker 24: .
- 40:40Speaker 6: .
- 40:43Speaker 28: .
- 40:45Speaker 10: .
- 41:01Speaker 15: Thank you.
- 41:31Speaker 11: All right, the Bob Denver one.
- 41:33Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, have you seen that?
- 41:34Speaker 11: I watch it. And this is why I love having
- 41:39Speaker 11: people pick stuff, because, again, I've gotten, like, from the
- 41:42Speaker 11: beginning of putting these soundtrack episodes together, I do get
- 41:46Speaker 11: a lot of, like, the Simon and Garfunkel. You know,
- 41:49Speaker 11: it's like a lot of the basic stuff. And then
- 41:51Speaker 11: I'll find ones that people, I'm like, okay, I've watched
- 41:53Speaker 11: a lot of movies, and I have not watched this one.
- 41:56Speaker 11: So when people find stuff that I'm like, wait, why
- 41:58Speaker 11: am I not familiar with this? And I love Bob
- 42:00Speaker 11: Denver in general. So the fact that it's this weird mixture,
- 42:03Speaker 11: I watched that. Have you guys seen it?
- 42:07Speaker 17: I haven't.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 42:09Speaker 5: So I saw that when I was a kid and
- 42:11Speaker 5: I became obsessed with it. Like I wanted to recreate that,
- 42:14Speaker 5: like draw the face.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Puppet on the chin.
- 42:15Speaker 11: Was it mostly the weird mouth thing going on? If
- 42:17Speaker 11: you haven't seen it, he flips upside down with his
- 42:19Speaker 11: head buried in the sand, draws a face upside down
- 42:23Speaker 11: on his chin with the weird, you know, he's a,
- 42:25Speaker 11: he's a, beatnik so he's got weird facial hair anyway
- 42:28Speaker 11: he's got like a goatee yeah and then then does
- 42:31Speaker 11: the entire song and you're looking at this weird upside
- 42:34Speaker 11: down drawn on face singing and his.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Mouth is singing it upside down he's like trying to
- 42:38Speaker 5: make it disturbing.
- 42:39Speaker 11: Yes in the best possible way yeah god do you
- 42:44Speaker 11: otherwise get suckered in for beach movies No. I mean,
- 42:47Speaker 11: the movie is terrible. That's what he said. And now
- 42:50Speaker 11: I watched it. You just fast forward to that part.
- 42:52Speaker 11: I watched that part. And then I went, this was
- 42:55Speaker 11: the best part. Because then I was like, what? I
- 42:56Speaker 11: couldn't even decide. Is this the title of the movie?
- 42:59Speaker 11: It's For Those Who Think Young. Did you figure out
- 43:03Speaker 11: why it's titled that?
- 43:05Speaker 1: No.
- 43:05Speaker 11: I did. It's a tie-in with Pepsi. They jumped on
- 43:10Speaker 11: that bandwagon in the mid-60s, obviously.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Product placement.
- 43:14Speaker 11: Pepsi was changing their little motto, the way that they
- 43:18Speaker 11: were going to start promoting Pepsi. And the new one
- 43:20Speaker 11: that was coming out was for those who think young
- 43:23Speaker 11: or for the young generation, some sort of new pitch
- 43:26Speaker 11: they were putting. And they had another. It was written
- 43:30Speaker 11: with an entirely different title, and they changed it just
- 43:33Speaker 11: to match the Pepsi commercials.
- 43:35Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 43:36Speaker 11: Does that now fit even more so? The more I
- 43:39Speaker 11: watched that, I was like, yeah.
- 43:40Speaker 5: Makes the movie even lamer.
- 43:42Speaker 11: This seems even more weird to put together. Brought to
- 43:46Speaker 11: you by Pepsi.
- 43:47Speaker 5: But, like, two of the stars of Gilligan's Island were
- 43:50Speaker 5: in that movie.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Who was the other one?
- 43:53Speaker 11: Tina Louise.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Tina Louise, yeah.
- 43:55Speaker 13: Which I.
- 43:56Speaker 1: The movie star. Yes. I'm not.
- 43:58Speaker 11: It's all Mary Ann.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Yeah. A little bit.
- 44:02Speaker 11: It was one of the greatest moments. I did talk
- 44:04Speaker 11: to Mary Ann at one point on the show. Yeah,
- 44:07Speaker 11: it was one of those times. I'm like, I don't
- 44:09Speaker 11: know if this is really happening. I might be delusional
- 44:13Speaker 11: right now. She's very cool. Still kind of got it together, too,
- 44:17Speaker 11: got to say. But yeah, that's a fascinating movie. I've
- 44:24Speaker 11: seen a few other beach movies. They are their own
- 44:27Speaker 11: weird world movies. Yeah, I mean, they've even tried to
- 44:32Speaker 11: reboot that idea over the years, and it just doesn't. Like,
- 44:35Speaker 11: nobody knows what to do with them. It passed its
- 44:38Speaker 11: point in time, and I don't know that they can
- 44:40Speaker 11: come back. I think it was.
- 44:42Speaker 5: The precursor to raves.
- 44:45Speaker 11: It could be.
- 44:45Speaker 5: And it's all standing on the beach doing this.
- 44:49Speaker 11: Some great dance moves, though. You're not mine.
- 44:56Speaker 1: So soft!
- 44:57Speaker 32: So soft!
- 45:16Speaker 28: Go Daddy!
- 45:18Speaker 3: Go Daddy!
- 45:19Speaker 16: Go Daddy!
- 45:20Speaker 15: Go Daddy!
- 45:21Speaker 12: Go Daddy!
- 45:22Speaker 15: Surf is up and the waves are high. Some are
- 45:25Speaker 15: gonna live and some are gonna die.
- 45:27Speaker 19: Hot stalkers ride them high and wide.
- 45:29Speaker 10: Grammys get all mashed up inside.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Hold that!
- 45:47Speaker 24: Hold that!
- 45:48Speaker 3: Hold that! Hold that!
- 45:50Speaker 10: When you lose control and get caught in a swirl,
- 45:53Speaker 10: that crazy dive is what you call up the pearl.
- 45:56Speaker 11: When the crave is on you to go top speed,
- 45:59Speaker 11: hoes over the nose is.
- 46:00Speaker 15: All you need.
- 46:02Speaker 3: Hold that! Hold that! Hold that!
- 46:07Speaker 10: When you see one coming, you yell outside And you
- 46:10Speaker 10: get to your feet and you start to glide Don't.
- 46:12Speaker 23: Fluke, you kooks, watch out for the stalls Or you'll
- 46:15Speaker 23: find yourself going over the falls.
- 46:39Speaker 15: Oh, yeah!
- 46:41Speaker 28: Oh, yeah!
- 46:44Speaker 1: Oh, yeah!
- 46:46Speaker 3: Oh, yeah!
- 46:50Speaker 25: Tunnel in, but not before you're sure that tunnel has
- 46:54Speaker 25: a door.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Now, before you.
- 46:56Speaker 10: Surfers hit the briny, be sure your boards are bright
- 47:00Speaker 10: and shiny.
- 47:01Speaker 7: Where's the.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Where's the.
- 47:16Speaker 16: Go!
- 47:16Speaker 3: Go!
- 47:17Speaker 4: Go!
- 47:47Speaker 11: Again, to try to decipher what all of that was.
- 47:50Speaker 11: The song was called Ho Daddy, parentheses, Surf's Up, close parentheses.
- 47:56Speaker 11: And it was performed by Bob Denver in the film
- 48:00Speaker 11: for those who are young. Go seek it out, maybe?
- 48:06Speaker 4: Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale.
- 48:09Speaker 11: Of a fateful trip.
- 48:11Speaker 10: That started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship.
- 48:15Speaker 15: This is Dawn Wells.
- 48:16Speaker 11: You might remember me, Marianna Gilligan-Sallen.

- 49:34Speaker 11: Again, that was one of those that I only, and
- 49:36Speaker 11: that's the way so many people I know who reference it,
- 49:39Speaker 11: reference it in conjunction with that scene. Like, that is
- 49:42Speaker 11: the way so many people came to know that song.
- 49:45Speaker 11: Is it one you were already familiar with before seeing
- 49:48Speaker 11: Royal Tenenbaum?
- 49:49Speaker 12: Yeah, I had been turned on to Elliot Smith a
- 49:52Speaker 12: while before I saw that movie, and I mean, certainly
- 49:55Speaker 12: it's a great song in and of itself, but in
- 49:59Speaker 12: the context of that scene where it's all those really
- 50:02Speaker 12: quick shots and like flashbacks and, uh, different, uh, filters
- 50:06Speaker 12: being used is very effective.
- 50:08Speaker 11: Yeah. But it's, it is funny cause I don't, I
- 50:11Speaker 11: don't think I knew the timeline. I did go back
- 50:14Speaker 11: to see, it was like, or were we pulling like
- 50:17Speaker 11: more of a classic song? It's only like six years
- 50:19Speaker 11: before that movie came out. Like it really, he was
- 50:22Speaker 11: pulling something sort of recent that, it had been the
- 50:25Speaker 11: single off that album, but I still don't think it
- 50:27Speaker 11: had found its way for, you know, it certainly wasn't
- 50:29Speaker 11: mainstream at that point. So it's an odd choice that
- 50:32Speaker 11: he didn't go like super classic. He found something that he,
- 50:35Speaker 11: I'm assuming he was just personally really into and like
- 50:38Speaker 11: really responded to. And as far as the, the scene itself, again,
- 50:43Speaker 11: this is another weird little tie in, but one of
- 50:46Speaker 11: the semi regulars on the show, Jonathan is in the
- 50:49Speaker 11: band Nelly Pearl. And when they played West Fest, they
- 50:52Speaker 11: ended their set with, needle in the hay and um
- 50:57Speaker 11: they'd come in costume so everyone in the band was
- 50:59Speaker 11: addressed as a member of the royal tenenbaum's cast he
- 51:03Speaker 11: was that character and as the song went on began
- 51:08Speaker 11: to kill himself wow including like full-on blood was worked
- 51:14Speaker 11: into it and by the end of the song the
- 51:16Speaker 11: rest of the band is still finishing out the song
- 51:18Speaker 11: and he's laying dead feedback coming off the guitars It's
- 51:21Speaker 11: the way to end a set, I realized. I was like,
- 51:24Speaker 11: you couldn't do that midway in. Like, this is your
- 51:27Speaker 11: big show. Like, this is your outro right here. So, yeah,
- 51:31Speaker 11: if you need to go out in style, it's fake
- 51:34Speaker 11: your own death and, you know, go out.
- 51:36Speaker 12: Make sure it's the last song.
- 51:37Speaker 11: Yeah, you can't then get up and be like, all right,
- 51:40Speaker 11: so next.
- 51:40Speaker 1: No encore.
- 51:41Speaker 11: Dust yourself off and smear the blood off your face.
- 51:45Speaker 11: And then the Good Will Hunting soundtrack.
- 51:48Speaker 13: Oh, well, I mean, I just mentioned that on the
- 51:50Speaker 13: back of... Sarah's stuff because she's such a fan of
- 51:54Speaker 13: Elliot Smith. I guess I always like when filmmakers will
- 52:01Speaker 13: use kind of a single band or a single songwriter
- 52:05Speaker 13: a few times throughout a movie to kind of create
- 52:08Speaker 13: a theme using what their style is as well as
- 52:12Speaker 13: the film itself work together.
- 52:15Speaker 11: Now Needle in the Hay is an amazing song. We
- 52:18Speaker 11: all love Needle in the Hay, but I know on
- 52:20Speaker 11: this show we've played it more than once, different versions
- 52:23Speaker 11: of it, so just to mix things up a little bit,
- 52:26Speaker 11: this is Miss Misery by Elliot Smith from the Good
- 52:29Speaker 11: Will Hunting soundtrack.
- 52:31Speaker 34: I'll fake it through the day with some help from
- 52:37Speaker 34: Johnny Walker Red Send the poison.
- 52:42Speaker 9: Rain down the drain to put bad thoughts in Nothing
- 53:01Speaker 9: to do Do you miss me? Miss misery Like you
- 53:11Speaker 9: say you.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Do A man in the park Read the lines.
- 53:22Speaker 19: In my head.
- 53:26Speaker 16: Told me I'm strong and hardly ever wrong. I said, man,
- 53:32Speaker 16: you mean you had plans for both of us. That
- 53:38Speaker 16: involved a trip out of town to a place I'd
- 53:45Speaker 16: seen in a magazine that you'd left lying.
- 54:01Speaker 3: I keep a.
- 54:03Speaker 15: Good attitude Do you miss me?
- 54:07Speaker 9: Miss, miss me Like you say I do I know
- 54:10Speaker 9: you'd rather see.
- 54:13Speaker 32: Me gone Than to see me The way that I
- 54:30Speaker 32: am when I am in the life anyway.
- 54:35Speaker 3: Next door, the TV's flashing blue.
- 54:43Speaker 15: Frames on the wall.
- 54:47Speaker 9: It's a comedy of errors you see. It's about taking
- 54:56Speaker 9: a fall.
- 54:59Speaker 35: To vanish into oblivion It's easy to do And I
- 55:10Speaker 35: try to be But.
- 55:13Speaker 14: You know me I come back when.
- 55:18Speaker 3: You want me to Do you miss me?
- 55:25Speaker 32: Miss misery like you say you do.
- 55:34Speaker 11: He didn't fall inconceivable um princess bride do we want
- 55:38Speaker 11: to do a little going to the uh mark knopfler
- 55:42Speaker 11: obsession uh.
- 55:43Speaker 13: Well i was just a big fan of mark knopfler
- 55:45Speaker 13: from being a guitar player in my teens and uh
- 55:50Speaker 13: i don't know that that The soundtrack to that movie
- 55:53Speaker 13: kind of fit the movie really well.
- 55:54Speaker 17: It's, like, kitschy, but a little bit more multidimensional, I guess,
- 55:58Speaker 17: than you would think.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:02Speaker 11: Yeah, especially at the time. I think everybody still just
- 56:05Speaker 11: kind of knew him coming off of, you know, his
- 56:07Speaker 11: big rock years. So, like, that was a weird... Now
- 56:11Speaker 11: it seems like there's a lot more of, like, rock
- 56:12Speaker 11: musicians becoming film composers, but that was a weird... jump
- 56:16Speaker 11: at that point that I don't think people are like, wait,
- 56:18Speaker 11: that guy from Dire Straits wrote this?
- 56:21Speaker 13: Yeah, I was surprised for sure when I found out.
- 56:24Speaker 13: He did a few soundtracks around that time, too.
- 56:27Speaker 11: Do you respond just to his normal singer-songwriter kind of
- 56:30Speaker 11: style more so, or the older rock stuff?
- 56:35Speaker 17: Depending on when you ask me that, I think the
- 56:37Speaker 17: answer would be different. I don't really know now. I
- 56:39Speaker 17: haven't listened to much in a while. At the time,
- 56:43Speaker 17: it was definitely Dire Straits.
- 56:44Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 56:56Speaker 3: It is a place where you can experience the beauty
- 56:59Speaker 3: of nature and the beauty of nature itself. It is
- 57:00Speaker 3: a place where you can experience the beauty of nature
- 57:03Speaker 3: and the beauty of nature itself.
- 57:54Speaker 16: Thank you for watching.
- 58:24Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 58:47Speaker 23: Thank you. Thank you.
- 59:37Speaker 11: That was I Will Never Love Again by Mark Knopfler
- 59:40Speaker 11: from the Princess Bride soundtrack.
- 59:46Speaker 1: This is John Spencer and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:00:00Speaker 11: Obviously Danny Elfman. I mean, you can't go wrong with Danny.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Especially with Tim Burton.
- 1:00:05Speaker 11: He's another one of those, though. He's all over. Like,
- 1:00:08Speaker 11: have you heard his other... The stuff that doesn't sound
- 1:00:11Speaker 11: like Danny? Like the weird jazzier stuff that you're just like, wait,
- 1:00:14Speaker 11: are you sure?
- 1:00:15Speaker 17: He's also done like big box office movies that you
- 1:00:17Speaker 17: never expect.
- 1:00:18Speaker 11: Yeah, that are a little more traditional.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: Yeah, more mainstream. Yeah.
- 1:00:22Speaker 11: He's an interesting guy. And again, back to the family band.
- 1:00:25Speaker 11: Their early days. They're an amazing band themselves.
- 1:00:29Speaker 25: Yeah, right.
- 1:00:30Speaker 17: The Elton Brothers.
- 1:00:32Speaker 11: Oh, definitely. Let's see. Scorsese. I mean, you can't... His
- 1:00:38Speaker 11: weird obsession with the Rolling Stones and continually over the
- 1:00:42Speaker 11: years working in and sometimes the same songs in different
- 1:00:46Speaker 11: soundtracks like over and over again. Like, he doesn't branch
- 1:00:49Speaker 11: out much, does he?
- 1:00:51Speaker 17: Well, he's played a lot of B-sides, I guess, like
- 1:00:54Speaker 17: in Main Street and stuff like that.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:56Speaker 17: But yeah, he plays jumping jack class a lot.
- 1:01:01Speaker 11: And then Steeler's Wheels. That is another one of those,
- 1:01:06Speaker 11: once you've seen that film, can you hear the song
- 1:01:09Speaker 11: and not have that in your head? There's a few
- 1:01:11Speaker 11: that the song's been around for years beforehand, but the
- 1:01:14Speaker 11: movie just kind of steals it. It's like, nope, this
- 1:01:16Speaker 11: is ours now.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:01:19Speaker 17: I'd heard about it before I'd seen the movie, of course,
- 1:01:21Speaker 17: as probably everybody.
- 1:01:24Speaker 12: Does, but.
- 1:01:27Speaker 17: I was just trying to think of something Tarantino did
- 1:01:29Speaker 17: since he does.
- 1:01:29Speaker 11: A lot of great movies.
- 1:01:32Speaker 17: Kill Bill is another great soundtrack.
- 1:01:35Speaker 11: Yeah, I know. Again, he's another one of those that
- 1:01:41Speaker 11: everything is so well planned out from the soundtrack to
- 1:01:45Speaker 11: everything else he's working on.
- 1:01:46Speaker 13: Yeah, isn't he one of those writers that kind of
- 1:01:50Speaker 13: writes from a song sometimes?
- 1:01:52Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:01:52Speaker 11: I think, again, there's ones that I'm like, I'm watching
- 1:01:55Speaker 11: the scene going, he was planning this from day one.
- 1:01:59Speaker 11: Like he envisioned this scene and this was already going
- 1:02:02Speaker 11: on in the background in his brain. So it's, it'll
- 1:02:05Speaker 11: be interesting. Yeah, he's got the new one coming out
- 1:02:08Speaker 11: to see what songs he then reclaims and puts in his,
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: then won't exist outside of his movies anymore.
- 1:02:15Speaker 29: Joe Egan and Jerry Rafferty were a duo known as
- 1:02:18Speaker 29: Steeler's Wheel when they recorded this Dylan-esque pop bubblegum favorite
- 1:02:23Speaker 29: from April of 1974. That reached up to number five
- 1:02:29Speaker 29: as K. Billy's Super Sounds of the 70s continues.
- 1:02:41Speaker 33: Well, I don't know why I came here tonight I
- 1:02:45Speaker 33: got the feeling there's something right I'm so scared in
- 1:02:50Speaker 33: case I fall off my.
- 1:02:51Speaker 15: Chair And I'm wondering.
- 1:02:54Speaker 33: How I'll get down the stairs Clowns to the left
- 1:02:58Speaker 33: of me, jokers to the right Here I am, stuck
- 1:03:02Speaker 33: in the middle with you Yes, I'm stuck in the
- 1:03:06Speaker 33: middle with you.
- 1:03:08Speaker 10: And I'm wondering what it is I.
- 1:03:10Speaker 33: Should do It's so hard to keep the smile from
- 1:03:14Speaker 33: my face.
- 1:03:16Speaker 15: Losing control, yeah, I'm.
- 1:03:17Speaker 10: All over the place.
- 1:03:20Speaker 15: Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right.
- 1:03:24Speaker 10: Here I am, stuck in the.
- 1:03:25Speaker 15: Middle with you. When you started out with nothing and
- 1:03:30Speaker 15: you're proud that you're a selfish man. And your friends,
- 1:03:36Speaker 15: they all come crawling. Slap you on.
- 1:03:39Speaker 7: The back and.
- 1:03:39Speaker 24: Say, please, please. Try to make.
- 1:03:56Speaker 36: Some sense of it all. But I can see it
- 1:04:00Speaker 36: makes no sense at all. Is it cool to go
- 1:04:04Speaker 36: to sleep on the floor? Is there a thing that
- 1:04:08Speaker 36: I can take anymore? Clowns to the left of me,
- 1:04:13Speaker 36: jokers to the right.
- 1:04:14Speaker 15: Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.
- 1:05:13Speaker 33: I got the feeling it's something right. I'm so scared
- 1:05:18Speaker 33: in case I fall off my chair.
- 1:05:21Speaker 15: And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs. Clowns
- 1:05:26Speaker 15: to the left of me, jokers to the right. Here
- 1:05:29Speaker 15: I am stuck in the middle with you. Yes, I'm
- 1:05:33Speaker 15: stuck in the middle with you.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Is that as good for you as it was for me?
- 1:05:48Speaker 11: I don't know. Any other fun movie stuff you want
- 1:05:52Speaker 11: to throw in here?
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Well, talking about Mark Knopfler reminded me of Richard Thompson
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: doing the soundtrack to Grizzly Man. Yeah. Which was really cool.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: And again, the DVD extras were Herzog's sort of standing
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: over Richard Thompson in the studio, like, okay, now do
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: something like this. And he's just improvising these guitar things
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: for the soundtrack.
- 1:06:23Speaker 11: It's hard to have a cool soundtrack to a documentary anyway,
- 1:06:26Speaker 11: but when you're working with Herzog, he's an insane person. Genius,
- 1:06:32Speaker 11: but kind of insane in the best possible way, once again. Yeah, that's...
- 1:06:38Speaker 11: And such an uplifting ending, that movie.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: And I wish I could say something more about Magnolia
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: and Amy Vance. Oh, yeah. Part in that, but I
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: don't think I've seen the movie, so I can't really. Really? Yeah.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: I like the soundtrack.
- 1:06:59Speaker 11: It's all the soundtrack.
- 1:07:00Speaker 13: Yeah, I think that's another example of him using a
- 1:07:04Speaker 13: single artist as like a thread through the movie.
- 1:07:06Speaker 17: So it's really, it works great. probably like the movie.
- 1:07:09Speaker 11: Oscar loser Amy.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:11Speaker 11: That's how she refers to herself on her Twitter page.
- 1:07:14Speaker 11: Nominated but didn't win and that's how she built herself
- 1:07:17Speaker 11: ever since.
- 1:07:17Speaker 17: For Magnolia it was kind of hard to watch I thought.
- 1:07:21Speaker 17: It's a rough.
- 1:07:22Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:07:23Speaker 17: It's long and it's all over the place.
- 1:07:26Speaker 32: Yeah.
- 1:07:28Speaker 11: Strange in a way the normal people who went there
- 1:07:31Speaker 11: going I like Tom Cruise were not prepared for her.
- 1:07:34Speaker 11: They're like this isn't like.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: His other movies.
- 1:07:37Speaker 11: So yeah that's That's what Anderson does.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Where's Goose?
- 1:07:41Speaker 11: Is he going to jump out of a plane yet?
- 1:07:44Speaker 22: All right.
- 1:07:45Speaker 11: Anything else to pass along? I guess just what do
- 1:07:49Speaker 11: you guys have going on as far as you're midway
- 1:07:51Speaker 11: in the tour, obviously. We're working on a soundtrack. You
- 1:07:56Speaker 11: do have your own documentary I saw.
- 1:07:59Speaker 26: Yes, true.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Who does the soundtrack for that? I can't remember.
- 1:08:05Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Some losers.
- 1:08:07Speaker 11: Some losers. Again, how much time did they commit to
- 1:08:12Speaker 11: just sort of following you around and piecing together what
- 1:08:15Speaker 11: you do?
- 1:08:17Speaker 12: I mean, it was pretty concise because the documentary maker,
- 1:08:24Speaker 12: Gorman Bouchard, He's up in Connecticut, and we're in North Carolina,
- 1:08:29Speaker 12: so obviously working out logistics took some planning and some fine-tuning.
- 1:08:35Speaker 12: But he came down and conducted a series of interviews
- 1:08:39Speaker 12: with us over the space of two or three days,
- 1:08:43Speaker 12: which was cool because we were in environments that were
- 1:08:46Speaker 12: comfortable to us and familiar. And then he would come
- 1:08:51Speaker 12: around to different shows that were close or in his
- 1:08:54Speaker 12: hometown and He came to one of our big shows
- 1:08:57Speaker 12: at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. and like when time
- 1:09:01Speaker 12: is of the essence you just like throw up as
- 1:09:04Speaker 12: many cameras as you can you get like anybody that
- 1:09:07Speaker 12: offers to help on board and you know you just
- 1:09:10Speaker 12: put it together in a in a way that that's cohesive.
- 1:09:15Speaker 11: Was it something that interests you the more you got
- 1:09:18Speaker 11: into it? Do you want to start making documentaries? Do
- 1:09:20Speaker 11: you want to be in movies now?
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:09:25Speaker 12: Aaron does.
- 1:09:27Speaker 11: Shove Tom Cruise out of the way. He's jumping out
- 1:09:29Speaker 11: of planes. Smile on his forehead. Dance on a beach.
- 1:09:34Speaker 11: I mean, that could probably be arranged. Well, you're going
- 1:09:39Speaker 11: to do it a little different.
- 1:09:40Speaker 17: That's right.
- 1:09:43Speaker 11: Singing with your forehead. That's the way to do it.
- 1:09:45Speaker 11: I don't get people's attention. But then I guess what's
- 1:09:49Speaker 11: the best way for people to find out more about
- 1:09:51Speaker 11: the band or to see where you're playing or what's
- 1:09:54Speaker 11: the best place to go find out information? I think
- 1:09:58Speaker 11: they missed that. You guys missed that on the.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Internet, right?
- 1:10:01Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:10:02Speaker 12: Our website is disarmers.com and there are different pages with
- 1:10:07Speaker 12: tour dates and album reviews and live reviews and all
- 1:10:11Speaker 12: that kind of thing.
- 1:10:12Speaker 17: Candid photos.
- 1:10:13Speaker 12: Candid photos, not-so-candid photos, and everything in.
- 1:10:16Speaker 11: Between, Phil.
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: I think all the music's available on Spotify and iTunes.
- 1:10:21Speaker 12: iTunes, Apple Music. And our Instagram is sarahshooksdisarmers.
- 1:10:29Speaker 11: And then we can go out with one of yours.
- 1:10:31Speaker 11: So now, pick one song that you want.
- 1:10:34Speaker 15: To go out on of yours.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: New Ways to Fail.
- 1:10:39Speaker 11: I'm a big fan of that one. All right, that
- 1:10:40Speaker 11: sounds like a good way to go.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 1:10:43Speaker 19: All right.
- 1:10:43Speaker 12: Well, thanks for having us.
- 1:10:44Speaker 11: Yeah, definitely. Thanks for sending in. And with that, I
- 1:10:47Speaker 11: will remind you, Get a Life will provide the soundtrack.
- 1:10:51Speaker 18: It seems my way of living Don't live up to
- 1:10:58Speaker 18: your standards And if you had your way I'd be
- 1:11:03Speaker 18: some proper kind of lady.
- 1:11:06Speaker 15: Well, the door is over.
- 1:11:08Speaker 23: There If I may things you said when.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: You damn time to.
- 1:11:36Speaker 15: Feed the dog.
- 1:11:37Speaker 7: Or get out of.
- 1:12:26Speaker 23: Don't you dare pretend I won't Been all alone.
- 1:12:32Speaker 37: Before And live to tell the tale Every day or
- 1:12:38Speaker 37: lately Damned if I do, damned if I don't Thought we.
