- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: License Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and creator of the groundbreaking concept truth lighting, the intentional opposite of gas lighting.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: Dr. Shah's also the author of a new best-selling book called From Gas Lighting to Truth Lighting, which has already become a number one hit in the human resource and personal category on Amazon.

- 1:22[SPEAKER_02]: Her message is both inspiring and practical, reminding us that honesty and compassion can transform how we lead, connect and influence others.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_02]: You can find her book by searching from gaslighting to truthlighting an Amazon.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_02]: Dr. Shaw, welcome to daily influence.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_02]: Can you share a bit about your background in what led you to where you are today and how the idea of truth lighting first came to light?
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, absolutely.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: So I was born and raised in Mumbai, which is essentially like New York.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's a metropolitan city in India.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I came to United States in 2001 for higher education and our American dream that most people come here for.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: I went on to obtain a Master's in Community Counseling from the Yale University of Chicago, and most recently in 2003, I obtained a PhD in Organizational Leadership again from
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: And through my doctoral research on promotions and rewards for women in corporate America and two decades of being in workforce, I have seen that too many people, especially women are questioning their own abilities and self-worth because of subtle but powerful workplace gas lighting.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: So when I published my first book, I wanted to report this powerful concept, which is the opposite of gas lighting called truth lighting.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I wanted something actionable that can transform how women are treated in workplaces and something that can inspire leaders to lead with truth and clarity.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why I created truth lighting.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for saying that for those that are new to the concept, how do you define truth lighting?
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: So truth-lighting is the opposite of gas-lighting.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: While gas-lighting distorts reality, it makes individuals doubt their experiences and perceptions.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: Truth-lighting illuminates truth, trust rather than manipulation and deception.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for sharing that.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: You know, our I&T series focuses on responsible influence.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: How are actions affect others?
- 3:30[SPEAKER_02]: How does troop lighting serve as a model of responsible influence in relationships, workplaces and leadership?
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, troop lighting serves as a model of responsible influence because it centers on validating people's reality rather than denying it.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: In any relationship, workplace or leadership, truth-lighting of forms people's experiences and their truth instead of undermining or dismissing them.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: By providing encouragement and empowerment rather than self-doubt, it helps others see their strengths clearly and make confident choices.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: really ultimately truth-lighting inspires hope and motivates people to become the best version of themselves.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: It demonstrates that responsible influence isn't about control or manipulation.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's about guiding others with honesty, respect and compassion.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: Could you walk us through a few real-life examples that show us the difference between gas lighting and truth-lighting and how each shapes trust and empowerment?
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: So, truth lighting offers actionable behaviors that create trust empowerment and fairness and it stands in stark contrast like I said with gas lighting.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: So, for example, the first one is acknowledging one's own biases.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: Gas lighting might tell someone, you didn't get the promotion because you're not ready or you don't have an authoritative tone of a manager or a decision maker.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: without giving any explanation.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: So this can really erode the individual's confidence in themselves.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: Truth-liding on the other hand clearly communicates that criteria for promotion and areas of growth while being mindful of the potential biases in their own decision-making.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: This builds trust and helps individuals feel secure in their own judgment.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: Another example of gaslighting can be in disguise of favoritism by implying certain people that they are already ahead when the positions are created for their so-called favourites.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: While truth-lining ensures that the roles are posted for everybody, there is transparency, there is fair interview process, and leadership is accountable to a standardized promotion process.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: So there is a component of data-driven transparency.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: in truth lighting where everyone has a equal shot without evidence, truth lighting provides clear demographic and promotion data and explains the steps that ensures fairness.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: It eliminates that concern where the men are told that you're overly sensitive or
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: You're too negative when you are bringing forward complaints or speaking up.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: So true planning is really about listening to understand and examining those patterns that allows for collaborative solutions and allows people to speak up without fear.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for sharing that.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_02]: Can you tell us about a moment or experience where you thought you made a positive impact on someone's life through this work?
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, a couple of weeks back, you know, right around my book launch and around the body, we had a family gathering.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: And my 14-year-old niece, she approached me and said, well, tell me about your book.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I started explaining to her that there are three essential steps to tutelighting, validating someone's reality, and you can do this by listening to understand and then paraphrase it back to the person.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, a firm people's experiences.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: So provide positive encouragement and value their contributions.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: And number three, motivate and encourage them to be the best they can.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I have yet to hear back from her.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: But she said, you know, I'm going to practice this with my friends at school and let you know how that goes.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: So in that moment, it really dawned on me that it's really important to empower our girls to take on leadership roles or learn life.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: So when they're ready for workforce, that they are confident and they're ready to conquer the world.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_02]: That's great, you know, pivoting a little bit while the hot topics that everyone's talking about today is AI.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_02]: Are you using AI in your work or outreach?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: And so how do you see the technology supporting or potentially challenging truth and mental wellness today?
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's a great question.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, I personally use the AI on a daily basis to develop mainly social media content and creating efficiencies in my own work as a new entrepreneur.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: Although I'm very mindful to use it responsibly, I keep it authentic, I let all of the sources and then I keep a human centric.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: AI can provide a lot of information, right?
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: But it's all based on what it has learned.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's a machine learning process.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: And what it has learned from the past, but I believe that AI cannot really replace human experience.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I try to use it responsibly by keeping the human component alive when I use AI.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for sharing that.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_02]: Dr. Shaw, what message or words of encouragement would you like to share with our listeners who aspire to make a positive difference and lead with truth and influence in their own lives?
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would really encourage our listeners to start small but intentional and practice these true-plighting behaviors in everyday interactions.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: Be authentic, listen to understand and validate other experiences and act with fairness.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: By doing this consistently, we can create a future where everyone's reality is respected.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: Workplaces, wear clarity, replaces confusion, trust, replaces fear,
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: and people feel safe to bring their full authentic selves.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for sharing that Dr. Shaw.
