- October 17 Wash and Learn to Do Good Topic: Forgiveness. Scripture: Isaiah 1:16–18 16 Wash yourselves. Make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil. 17 Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Defend the fatherless. Plead for the widow. 18 “Come now, and let’s reason together,” says Yahweh: “Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Context Isaiah confronts Judah for religious activity disconnected from justice. God calls them to stop evil, learn good, defend vulnerable people, and receive cleansing. Forgiveness and changed practice belong together. The invitation to cleansing follows that ethical call. Let It Shape Your Life Isaiah refuses two shallow versions of faith. One says, “I worship, so my behavior toward people does not matter.” The other says, “I have done wrong, so cleansing is impossible.” God rejects both. Repentance has direction: cease evil, learn good, seek justice, help people who are vulnerable. Forgiveness is not pretending the wrong was small. Scarlet is scarlet. Grace is God’s promise that sin does not have to remain the final color of the story. That means confession can lead somewhere besides shame. It can lead into repair, new habits, accountability, and a different way of treating people. We do not earn cleansing by accumulating enough good deeds. But when grace reaches us, it should eventually become visible in how we live. God forgives people, not so they can stay comfortably unchanged, but so they can walk differently. Think About It What would “learn to do good” look like in the specific area where you most need God’s forgiveness and change?
