- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Gart.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hey everybody, I'm Alex Garrett and welcome inside to the
- 0:08Speaker 2: One Leg Up Network. And as a kid who grew
- 0:11Speaker 2: up literally half a mile from Saint John's, last night
- 0:15Speaker 2: was pretty damn special after.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Twenty five years, what.
- 0:22Speaker 4: The sun up?
- 0:23Speaker 5: I should begin the Saint John's.
- 0:28Speaker 6: Fred Store marshampions the Big.
- 0:32Speaker 2: East and who else? Gus Johnson with a great call
- 0:36Speaker 2: of the final buzzer and of course Saint John's for
- 0:40Speaker 2: the first time since two thousand in a year where
- 0:42Speaker 2: we're mourning the loss of lou Carna Seca five twenty six.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Twenty five years later, Saint John's not only won the
- 0:50Speaker 2: regular season, but the Big East title and they're well
- 0:54Speaker 2: on the way to what I believe is a deep run.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And I want you to listen to this press conference
- 0:59Speaker 2: on Rick Patino had yesterday in case you missed it
- 1:03Speaker 2: here It isn't entirety because you know this is a
- 1:06Speaker 2: special moment. I want everybody to hear what the head
- 1:09Speaker 2: coach of the Saint John's Redstorm had to say after
- 1:13Speaker 2: winning it all in the Big East last night.
- 1:16Speaker 1: You know I say it all along. You know Saint
- 1:18Speaker 1: John's is Luke Connesseca, Chris Mullen, Mark Jackson, Walter Berry
- 1:22Speaker 1: and all the great from Joe Depre and Johnny Warren
- 1:26Speaker 1: go back in the day. That's Saint John's. I'm just
- 1:29Speaker 1: a caretaker of what all those guys built, and I'm
- 1:33Speaker 1: a proud caretaker of that. So after the game, you
- 1:38Speaker 1: obviously think of Lou and how proud he would have been.
- 1:41Speaker 7: Rais here the right coach at the just under the
- 1:46Speaker 7: twelve minute mark, was the first time you took the
- 1:49Speaker 7: lead in this game? And I did a tweet the
- 1:52Speaker 7: minute Saint John's takes the lead in this game, it's over,
- 1:57Speaker 7: and it was and it was Vince that may the basket.
- 2:01Speaker 7: And I think Vincent's been playing incredible starting in this tournament.
- 2:05Speaker 7: Really can you comment on that turning point and also
- 2:08Speaker 7: the way the crowd helped you?
- 2:11Speaker 1: Well, the crowd was great, and I'm glad you have
- 2:13Speaker 1: those tweeting powers. It's amazing that you have those powers.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Creskin would be very proud of that. He made a
- 2:26Speaker 1: very good play. Inside, He's a project, but he's a
- 2:31Speaker 1: worthwhile project. I'm a very confident coach. I didn't have
- 2:37Speaker 1: quite real confidence, but I was very apprective second round
- 2:42Speaker 1: in the medal with Jay.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Coach, congratulations. Rebuilding a program is hard. You've taken this
- 2:50Speaker 5: Saint John's program from around the middle of the conference
- 2:53Speaker 5: to being just on the edge of the tournament to
- 2:55Speaker 5: now you've won a regular season title, a tournament title,
- 2:58Speaker 5: and you're probably going to be a very, very high
- 3:00Speaker 5: seed in the UNCAA tournament. What message would you send
- 3:04Speaker 5: to this country that have been used to a Saint
- 3:06Speaker 5: John's team towards the middle and now they're about to
- 3:09Speaker 5: see in March madness the Saint John's team towards the top.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I don't send any messages to anyone. Humility is a
- 3:16Speaker 1: big part of my life right now. It wasn't always
- 3:18Speaker 1: that way. I don't believe in redemption. I believe in humility.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I don't believe in things that I believe in living
- 3:28Speaker 1: in what I call the precious present, a gift that
- 3:30Speaker 1: we all get. And you know, we just lost a
- 3:34Speaker 1: superstar at in Louisville, Junior Bridgeman, who was a young
- 3:38Speaker 1: man who didn't smoke, didn't drink, carried his life in
- 3:42Speaker 1: God's name in a big way. So I take I
- 3:46Speaker 1: take life as as one day at a time. I
- 3:48Speaker 1: take a one game at a time. I don't. I
- 3:51Speaker 1: don't consider ourselves that people should be aware of us.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I've lost in the first round. I've been to seven
- 3:58Speaker 1: final fours. So we'll take a one game at a time,
- 4:01Speaker 1: one possession at a.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Time right here in the Mountain.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Coach both Coach mart and Coach Early yesterday commented on
- 4:10Speaker 6: sort of the officiating differences in the Big East versus
- 4:13Speaker 6: the NCAA tournament in the style play there. How do
- 4:17Speaker 6: you how do you see your team what they say? Oh,
- 4:20Speaker 6: I'm sorry, I'm sorry they.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Don't listen to those guys at press conferences.
- 4:23Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, my apology.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Very interesting, but yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Uh.
- 4:28Speaker 6: They talked about the physicality and how there's a lot
- 4:31Speaker 6: more physicality that's allowed in the Big East versus the
- 4:34Speaker 6: NCAA tournament. Uh do you do you buy that?
- 4:37Speaker 1: Having an impulse been going on for when I coached
- 4:40Speaker 1: the Providence, when John Thompson was roaming the sidelines, everybody
- 4:43Speaker 1: said the Big East is a much more physical league. Tonight,
- 4:46Speaker 1: those officials did a great job. I don't know what
- 4:48Speaker 1: he was doing with Auj when Auj went three and
- 4:50Speaker 1: he thought he was making a gun sign I don't
- 4:52Speaker 1: think aug knows what a gun is. So it is physical,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but you have to adjust to come tournament time. You
- 5:01Speaker 1: have to adjust movie your feet mow. But that's been
- 5:03Speaker 1: since in nineteen eighty seven when I was a coach.
- 5:05Speaker 1: They said that about the Big East. But I think
- 5:08Speaker 1: that Connecticut did an awfully good job of adjusting, don't
- 5:11Speaker 1: you think in the last two years of adjusting to officiating.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You know, I know Danny's very happy with officials, especially
- 5:17Speaker 1: in the.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Tournament over here at Zach on the left.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Rick, You've obviously been here before with different programs, But
- 5:27Speaker 4: what does it mean to have Saint John's here? Big
- 5:29Speaker 4: East regular season and tournament, postseason tournament. It's been a
- 5:32Speaker 4: program that's basically been dormant for twenty five years, and
- 5:35Speaker 4: people said Saint John's couldn't do this. What's it like
- 5:38Speaker 4: for you to be able to bring it back?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Well, first of all, I think there's a lot of
- 5:42Speaker 1: misrepresentations about NIL. Nil didn't get us this team because
- 5:49Speaker 1: Zoobie and Aujay are very low paid players. So that's
- 5:54Speaker 1: nonsense about the NIL. When you're in free agency right now,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you know and you've seen it for all of you
- 6:03Speaker 1: to carry pro Sports. You get a batter that you
- 6:06Speaker 1: think is going to really help the Yankees, the Mets
- 6:08Speaker 1: or whatever. Maybe that's one fifty. You don't know what
- 6:11Speaker 1: you're getting. Somebody asked me about Zubi and AJ. You
- 6:14Speaker 1: don't know what you're getting. Zubi didn't even play at
- 6:17Speaker 1: Kansas and AJ was a good freshman solid But you
- 6:21Speaker 1: don't know what you're getting. So here's two stars, very underpaid.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm sure there'll be at Matt's window probably in season ends,
- 6:30Speaker 1: but they're not going anywhere. So you build a team
- 6:35Speaker 1: by making sure you understand the whole puzzle of what
- 6:39Speaker 1: goes into it, and it's People just mischaracterize the NIL
- 6:45Speaker 1: and why Saint John's has been built. Saint John's didn't
- 6:48Speaker 1: get built by the NIL. Saint John's got built with
- 6:51Speaker 1: character of the players, and certainly we are excited to
- 6:56Speaker 1: have these young men.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Last question, Roger.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Rick Roger, every team that comes here to the Big
- 7:06Speaker 3: East Tournament, you know, wants to win it. Do you
- 7:09Speaker 3: feel like because of where Saint John's has been, because
- 7:14Speaker 3: of where Saint John's is located, and because of the
- 7:16Speaker 3: building it's played in, that it's Saint John's winning the
- 7:20Speaker 3: championship is a kind of a bigger deal.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Well because of everything that Zach just mentioned, you know,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and you guys keep pointing it out about all the
- 7:31Speaker 1: things that weren't accomplished before I was born. You know,
- 7:34Speaker 1: I would keep saying forty years twenty five, I wasn't
- 7:36Speaker 1: around back then. I was just you know, I was
- 7:40Speaker 1: in my prime in diapers. But I am as a
- 7:44Speaker 1: New Yorker about as proud as any person could be.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Because you know, when I hear Saint John's's New York's
- 7:52Speaker 1: team and we're in New York strong and we represent
- 7:55Speaker 1: New York, that makes me feel awesome inside. So for
- 8:00Speaker 1: New York, for Saint John's to see that crowd tonight,
- 8:05Speaker 1: it's an extra special feeling for me. Now, I was
- 8:08Speaker 1: elated with Louisville when we came in here and won
- 8:11Speaker 1: three times. I believe elated for the players later. But
- 8:14Speaker 1: there's an extra special feeling being a New Yorker who
- 8:18Speaker 1: grew up on twenty sixth Street and grew up in
- 8:20Speaker 1: Queens then Lo Allen. So for me, it's just extra
- 8:24Speaker 1: extra special because I share this with every fan that
- 8:29Speaker 1: takes great pride in what accomplished this year. The fans
- 8:31Speaker 1: are very much part of our team. Tonight when we celebrate,
- 8:36Speaker 1: I will toast the fans. I will toast you Roger,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and I will toast everybody in this room has supported us.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And it's got a lot of drinks tonight, guys, Thank
- 8:45Speaker 1: you all very much.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Audio courtesy of CBS Sports and the Big East And
- 8:51Speaker 2: so wow, what a speed, what a press conference. And
- 8:55Speaker 2: I loved what he said there built on character. And
- 8:59Speaker 2: as I said, when Luke Carnatzecha passed, I realized that
- 9:03Speaker 2: I love Saint John's because of its culture. And when
- 9:07Speaker 2: you look at the culture that lou Carnaseca built and
- 9:11Speaker 2: a time when Nil was not there, he built the
- 9:15Speaker 2: culture of welcoming, of winning, and of warmth, and I
- 9:23Speaker 2: love that culture of Saint John's. I think everybody that
- 9:25Speaker 2: I met through Saint John's been the nicest people. And
- 9:28Speaker 2: I love that coach Craig Schwartz got to coach at
- 9:31Speaker 2: Saint John's. I love that Mark arne U is a
- 9:35Speaker 2: professor at Saint John's. I love that Bob Shepherd's name
- 9:40Speaker 2: is on the press box of the baseball team. And
- 9:42Speaker 2: by the way, Queen's has brought some championships, has had
- 9:47Speaker 2: some championships brought to that county. We talk about Saint
- 9:52Speaker 2: John's Basketball, Well, what about in twenty three a little
- 9:57Speaker 2: down the road, I know, but Queen's College eastball and soccer.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Of course, we got to see them clinch the ECC
- 10:04Speaker 2: title in twenty three on Veterans Day, as a matter
- 10:07Speaker 2: of fact, bringing the East Coast Conference championships to Queens.
- 10:12Speaker 2: How about this? How about Big East Baseball? Saint John's
- 10:16Speaker 2: bringing the trophy just this last year to Jack Kaiser Stadium.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So Queen's is a home of winnards. Baby, I love it,
- 10:27Speaker 2: and I love seeing Saint John's succeed and I love
- 10:29Speaker 2: when I've obviously my alma mater succeeds Queen's College. But
- 10:35Speaker 2: don't sleep on this borough of Queens. I'm telling you, man,
- 10:38Speaker 2: don't sleep on us. And of course Saint John's coming
- 10:42Speaker 2: in now. All eyes are on it for sure, after
- 10:46Speaker 2: winning the regular season title, after winning the Big East
- 10:51Speaker 2: title now, and I'm sure they're gonna get a very
- 10:53Speaker 2: high ranking on selection Sunday. We're all gonna find out
- 10:57Speaker 2: tonight at six, aren't. We're gonna have to see how
- 10:59Speaker 2: it goes. But Rick Patino as Liu Terminolo and I
- 11:03Speaker 2: have talked his second year from bubble to bursting onto
- 11:09Speaker 2: the scene in a big way. And you know what
- 11:14Speaker 2: wasn't mentioned yesterday, but you got handed to Kadari. I
- 11:18Speaker 2: mean Kadari Richmond Man. He is a veteran. He got
- 11:27Speaker 2: Sint Hall to some grade levels too, and what he's
- 11:31Speaker 2: done in Saint John's, the veteran presence is enormous and
- 11:35Speaker 2: he cannot be excluded from the praise going on for
- 11:40Speaker 2: a Zubie who was MVP and RJ and also Kadari.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I mean, what a team and what a group that
- 11:48Speaker 2: Rick Patino has assembled, and I love it. He's a
- 11:50Speaker 2: caretaker of what those like lu cardseeka built at Saint John's.
- 11:54Speaker 2: He is continuing that mantle, not nil, but care and
- 12:01Speaker 2: he got to love that because a healthy culture starts
- 12:08Speaker 2: with a healthy character and Saint John's has both. And
- 12:12Speaker 2: now they're winning once again for the first time in
- 12:15Speaker 2: twenty five years. The Street, the team that I lived
- 12:19Speaker 2: half a mile down the road from. Yeah, I was
- 12:24Speaker 2: a Queen's boy back in the day and I still
- 12:26Speaker 2: am at heart, is on to a bigger March Madness experience.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I can feel it can you, We'll have more updates
- 12:36Speaker 2: for you on the one Loo Up Network. And one
- 12:38Speaker 2: last thing if you're a Duke fan, if you're an
- 12:41Speaker 2: NBA draft follower, Cooper Flag looks like he'll be playing
- 12:45Speaker 2: in March Madness after Duke winning the ACC yesterday. Look,
- 12:52Speaker 2: a lot of eyes are gonna be on what Cooper
- 12:53Speaker 2: Flag does following his injury. I know my friend Lindsay Is,
- 12:57Speaker 2: I know my friend Charlie Culture. We've got on Is
- 13:00Speaker 2: and I know so many NBA fans will be as
- 13:03Speaker 2: well keeping their eye on Cooper Flag and his progress
- 13:08Speaker 2: because this is not just the tournament were talking about.
- 13:09Speaker 2: We're talking about his future in the NBA. This kid's
- 13:14Speaker 2: going places, and we'll see how he starts with March Madness.
- 13:17Speaker 2: So there are my storylines. And of course Auburn knocked
- 13:21Speaker 2: off its block yesterday by Tennessee. Look, I haven't followed
- 13:25Speaker 2: the college world close enough, but I do see the
- 13:28Speaker 2: rankings and I see Auburn was ranked really high. So
- 13:30Speaker 2: for them to be knocked out in the SEC tournament
- 13:33Speaker 2: very interesting for sure. It's all be fun a selection Sunday,
- 13:40Speaker 2: and again though they had a very very tough Biggie's performance.
- 13:46Speaker 2: You cannot rule out the defending champion you come, can you.
- 13:49Speaker 2: You can't rule out Danny Hurley and the Huskies, can you?
- 13:52Speaker 2: I don't think so. So let's keep an eye on
- 13:54Speaker 2: everything as March Madness is here round. If sixty eight
- 13:58Speaker 2: starts Tuesday, Selection Sunday tonight, have at it. We'll see
- 14:03Speaker 2: you as one leg Up as the first seed in
- 14:06Speaker 2: all these regions, and of course Newark hosting the East
- 14:09Speaker 2: Regional for the first time since twenty eleven, so there's
- 14:13Speaker 2: a little bit of interesting news as well. Ken Saint
- 14:15Speaker 2: John's play there we'll have to see. But tonight it
- 14:19Speaker 2: all culminates with selection Sunday, and we'll see you who's in,
- 14:25Speaker 2: who's out, who's ranked, where, what and why? And we'll
- 14:30Speaker 2: be sure to cover for you on One Leg Up
- 14:32Speaker 2: on Sports. I'm Alex Scarett.
