- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this exciting episode of Two
- 0:12Shot Tuesday, Barry. It's our 11th episode available
- 0:16on YouTube and our 250 something episode available everywhere you
- 0:22get your podcasts. Have you been checking out Two
- 0:24Shot Tuesday? Where you get your podcast,
- 0:26Barry? Yeah, I sure have.
- 0:28I never miss a week. Nice.
- 0:29So I'm happy. What's your?
- 0:31Support the show. It's your preferred way of
- 0:33consuming podcasts for our listeners.
- 0:37Well, of late it's been watching them, but of.
- 0:40Late. Yeah, of late.
- 0:42But you know, I'm, I'm happy to listen to, I mean, I don't, I'm
- 0:46not kind of married to one or the other.
- 0:48It depends on the situation, right?
- 0:50Talk to me about what helps you come up with that situation.
- 0:54I've left right into the hard questions for the day before we
- 0:57even have gotten into our first shot.
- 0:59Right. Well, I guess it depends if I'm
- 1:01like at the office and I'm working, I it will not be a
- 1:04video component because then that's just way too obvious that
- 1:07I am doing something else in addition to my regular duties.
- 1:11But yeah, I don't know. I mean, I do like watching them
- 1:14on the big screen. I got the Spotify app, my TV as
- 1:18you do as well. That's one of the things about
- 1:20the Sony flagships. So yeah, I don't know.
- 1:24I'll say happy to do either one. There's no, there's no, you
- 1:28know, a stake in the ground. Today is the day I must watch it
- 1:31versus listening. What about you?
- 1:33I listen to my podcast because I'm usually working out,
- 1:36walking, cooking at home. Nice.
- 1:40Those are kind of the three areas where I'm listening to
- 1:42podcast. And so video I find just doesn't
- 1:46work for me because I can't stop myself to kind of watch and see
- 1:49what's being held up or whatever they're they're showing.
- 1:52So my preferred method is listening to podcasts, although
- 1:56it's video podcasts that are taking off.
- 1:58So we I am in the minority. You kind of straddle the line of
- 2:02both and I think it kind of comes and goes about.
- 2:04I'm surprised people can stay glued to a screen.
- 2:07Maybe they don't stay glued, but they just like the option maybe
- 2:09of glancing down and seeing when there's a visual component,
- 2:12which they're very well. Maybe in this show, I don't
- 2:15know. We'll find out.
- 2:16There could be. Well before we go any further,
- 2:19let's have our first shot of the evening.
- 2:20Jay, this is a non alcoholic sober show for yours.
- 2:23Trulia just finished a big workout so I am beginning with
- 2:26some protein from our friends that lift the city supplements.
- 2:31And what? It's limitless pharma, I know.
- 2:33Yep. What?
- 2:34Flavor. Have you got always the same
- 2:36right? Yeah, it's peanut butter
- 2:37chocolate. Nice, stick with what you love.
- 2:40I am going back to a classic. I am doing a classic lemon
- 2:44squeezy in a shakeable container and that's in your honor along
- 2:49with your sober show. It will be my sober show.
- 2:52Here's to you, Jay. Cheers.
- 2:56All right, Barry, what have you got for us today that you want
- 3:01to get off your chest or would you like me to kick off?
- 3:03Well, I can provide a quick review of a concert that I went
- 3:07to about four or five days ago. I was fortunate enough to see
- 3:11the surviving members of The Pogues, so you may know them.
- 3:14They put Irish music on the map and they appeared in history
- 3:18along with like a 10 piece orchestra.
- 3:20I mean, they had a harp on stage, they had a piano, they
- 3:23had a horn section and an enormous, like, it was like a
- 3:27bass drum on steroids. I've never seen a drum as large
- 3:30as this that was also there, Yeah.
- 3:32Notable drum that big that you you've made note of it.
- 3:35Yeah, I was like, what is that? And Chris was like, well, I
- 3:38think it's some kind of bass drum.
- 3:39But it was like, enormous. Anyway, it was a really great
- 3:41time. There wasn't a dry eye in the
- 3:43house. They sang rum sodomy in the
- 3:45lash. Start to Finish, which is the
- 3:4740th anniversary of that record being released, came out in 85
- 3:51because the singer Shane McGowan has passed on Spider Stacy, who
- 3:55was one of the original members and did take over the singing
- 3:58duties back in the day when Shane's drinking, you know, kind
- 4:02of sidelined him as the front man from the band.
- 4:05So sounded fantastic. But there were other people that
- 4:08also sang a couple of songs. It was a gallop that came as
- 4:12part of the tour. So she sang, you know, one of
- 4:14their most popular tracks, and it was fantastic.
- 4:17It really was great vibe. Funny, though, you look around,
- 4:20it was just, you know, it's the joke of many concerts is it's
- 4:24stuff white people like. So if you want to see a bunch of
- 4:27white people, they were all at the Pogue show.
- 4:30Yeah, just because it's an Irish band.
- 4:32I mean, it makes sense. But we did see some younger
- 4:35people there. And I was happy to see that,
- 4:37like Gen. Z age people getting exposed to
- 4:40The Pogues. I thought, wow, this is pretty
- 4:42cool because this band is, you know, they're not exactly
- 4:44releasing new stuff. This was sort of like a victory
- 4:47lap tour for them to commemorate one of their biggest records
- 4:50ever. And it was really a lot of fun,
- 4:53very professional. The other cool thing at history,
- 4:56I guess this was at the behest of the band.
- 4:58They didn't stop serving alcohol until the very last song until
- 5:03they walked off stage. Then the bars closed, which is
- 5:06unusual. So usually they have a cut off
- 5:08time, but they said this time, no, we're we are serving until
- 5:12the band leaves the stage and that was their request.
- 5:15Pretty cool. OK.
- 5:16And how long was the show? How long did they play?
- 5:19Oh, I would say an hour and a half.
- 5:21There was an opener as well, but The Pogues were about an hour
- 5:23and a half, maybe a touch less than that.
- 5:26It's really hard to tell when you're kind of in the moment.
- 5:28It was like 1 giant sing along, Jay.
- 5:30There were so many songs that everyone knew the the lyrics to
- 5:32was really cool. It was like a preview of like a,
- 5:35you know, Saint Patrick's Day kind of thing.
- 5:37It was great. And I did decide to pick up a
- 5:39shirt. This was one of those I.
- 5:41Knew this was going to be. Well, but also when it's, I
- 5:45think this is going to be a one and done.
- 5:46I can't see them returning to Toronto.
- 5:49Maybe they'll do some, you know, shows in the UK, but I really
- 5:52feel like this is kind of like a 11 and done opportunity.
- 5:56So I stood in line, got a shirt, very happy with it and something
- 5:59I can wear for future Saint Patrick's days.
- 6:02Fantastic. Now they you were saying the
- 6:05lead singer, the former lead singer passed away.
- 6:07That's right. And has been out of the band for
- 6:09some time before even passing away.
- 6:12Has he? Had he tried to come back at
- 6:14all? Or when he was gone, he was
- 6:16gone? I believe when he was gone,
- 6:18like, I don't know the full history, but he unfortunately
- 6:21was in the grips of addiction that sidelined him and he really
- 6:25wasn't able to fulfill the duties of a front man.
- 6:29So even if he wanted to come back, I think he was just on in
- 6:31the grips of addiction to the point where it, you know, didn't
- 6:36allow him to return in any meaningful way.
- 6:39But thankfully they had another guy, like I said, Spider Stacy,
- 6:41who took over the singing duties.
- 6:43And he sounds very similar to Shane.
- 6:45And in one of the songs pair of brown eyes, he sang that and it
- 6:48was just like, man, it was just sounded amazing.
- 6:51And it sounded like the original guy was really cool.
- 6:54And, you know, there were a few times where Chris and I both
- 6:57were, yeah, a little misty at some of these songs being
- 7:00performed, like, because I'd never heard them in any other
- 7:03form, right? I'd only ever heard them MP3 or
- 7:05CD. But seeing anything performed
- 7:07live, especially when it's that iconic of a song, you know,
- 7:10these Irish standards that many people know, when you see them
- 7:14perform live, it's really another thing altogether.
- 7:16It's kind of a transcendent experience.
- 7:18Were you both kind of standing there with your lips quivering
- 7:22at the same time or did did the waves come on you at separate
- 7:25times? How did you, how did you handle
- 7:26that? I'm curious.
- 7:27My my focus was primarily on the performance, but you'd look
- 7:32over, I don't know exactly whose lip quivered first, but you
- 7:35know, this is a question for Chris when we see him in a
- 7:37couple of weeks. So, and we will.
- 7:39Yeah, Yeah, we will. He's, you know, he's approaching
- 7:41his 50th birthday. He's moving into that.
- 7:44Yeah. Emotional type.
- 7:45You, you saw the whiskey overtake me last week.
- 7:48It was. Absolutely it.
- 7:49Was quite a bit. And so if Pogue's music
- 7:51overtakes you, then you know what?
- 7:53That's fair. That is fair, Sir.
- 7:56Thank you. I think we need to do shot
- 7:58number two of our sober show before we get too emotional here
- 8:01ourselves. And I'm going back to the lemon
- 8:04squeezy. What have you got?
- 8:06Cool, I'm sticking with the post workout protein.
- 8:10Our friends lift the city supplements.
- 8:13Cheers. Cheers.
- 8:17Before we get into and we're going to do a RIP from the
- 8:19headlines, I have got a a review I want to do and I'm going to
- 8:23show something for those tuning in on video.
- 8:25Yeah, I want you to check this out here.
- 8:30OK, what am I looking at you? You're looking at the Spawn
- 8:33Origins Deluxe hardcover edition.
- 8:37This is volume 5. I just picked up volume 8 so I'm
- 8:41a little behind in my reading. This collects the classic Todd
- 8:45McFarlane in 1992. This was the second Image comic
- 8:50released from Image Comics. Means nothing to you.
- 8:53To some of our listeners, you will understand this.
- 8:55Todd McFarlane, one of the top Spider Man artists of all time,
- 9:00sort of created the Spider Man Look, I've got his original art
- 9:03book at the mini mansion that you've seen.
- 9:07I actually showed it to DJ Teenage Werewolf when he was
- 9:09here. I'll show it to you in more
- 9:10detail, showing his actual pencils.
- 9:13Anyway, he broke away. He and some top creators in
- 9:15199192 left to start their own comic label called Image Comics.
- 9:20And since then Spawn has been continually published to this
- 9:23day. So there are now almost 400
- 9:26issues of Spawn. And so I've decided it's, it's
- 9:28not the greatest series of all time.
- 9:30He only drew maybe the first not even 20 issues.
- 9:34But it's got this kind of fun artwork style that just brings
- 9:38me back to the 90s. It's pure nostalgia for me.
- 9:42I'm trying to, I can devour like I, I'm enjoying it.
- 9:44I think I read like 3 issues on the weekend and I'll just
- 9:48continue to kind of move my way through it.
- 9:50And it's a fun book. It doesn't make it a lot of
- 9:53sense. It's not like it seems like it's
- 9:55a bit overwritten. He's he's a writer.
- 9:57He's writing a lot of these stories.
- 9:59Yeah. It's going to sound like I'm
- 10:01slagging on it, but I I actually really do quite enjoy it.
- 10:04It's just a lot of fun. It's not like I said the best
- 10:07thing. There's almost there's typos in
- 10:09some of the issues, so little bit lacks on the editorial side
- 10:13of it, some incorrect uses of punctuation and things like
- 10:17that. But again, wow, it's a fun comic
- 10:19Spawn. You're familiar with the movie
- 10:22The Failed Movie of 1997 starring I've.
- 10:25Heard of it? Yeah.
- 10:27Which is coming out in a 4K release that I made.
- 10:30Yes, it is and and. It's a super deluxe release if I
- 10:34recall that includes the lobby cards, the poster, the yes, the
- 10:37bound booklet. It's Arrow Films putting it out,
- 10:41so yes. Spawn is a very, the, the first
- 10:45issues that I did read and I kind of came back to it a bunch
- 10:47of times. It was always it's a it's a
- 10:50military guy. He was killed.
- 10:52He's trying to get back to his wife.
- 10:54There's a lot of that They drag out this trying to get back to
- 10:56his wife's story, but he becomes a an agent of hell.
- 11:00And in this war between heaven and hell that I'm in now at
- 11:03issue 115 is still continuing. It's sort of sidelined a few
- 11:07times. He's become a board of hell.
- 11:10There's all these other stories. He ends up going across these,
- 11:13solving some kind of crimes basically is an excuse to kind
- 11:16of tell any kind of story that they want.
- 11:18But I admire the creativity, some of the some incredible
- 11:21artwork from himself. A guy named Greg Capullo, Angel
- 11:24Medina is the artist of this one.
- 11:26All sticking to a certain style and it's OK and I quite enjoy
- 11:30it. So that's Spawn, and I'll keep
- 11:33our listeners and viewers up to date as I work my way through
- 11:37this very slowly. Yeah, sounds good.
- 11:40So are you any closer to adding the film to your library to kind
- 11:44of like add to your spawn family?
- 11:47Is that something you're thinking of doing now or?
- 11:48It's it's not out yet. It's will be out at some point.
- 11:52I can't even pre-order it. It's not available for
- 11:54pre-order. But if it was I might quickly
- 11:57snap that up. There was an HBO series which I
- 12:00did enjoy in the 90s that came out throughout Rancy three
- 12:03seasons and it was an animated 1, so it was really good.
- 12:07OK. Yeah, so that's Spawn.
- 12:10So check out Spawn. Some comfort food for the comics
- 12:13lover in you that wants to enjoy some 90s nostalgic.
- 12:17That's when it was all about the artist.
- 12:18In the 90s, writers took a second back seat to the artist
- 12:22and their crazy ideas. That's when characters like
- 12:24Deadpool were birthed. Cable, a lot of these other big
- 12:28characters. Yeah.
- 12:29Anyway, we'll talk about that more on another episode.
- 12:32Please what? I do want to do now because you
- 12:35sent them over is let's, let's get ripped from the headlines.
- 12:39Our audience loves that, Loves it.
- 12:42All right, I'm going to pick one at random.
- 12:43Yeah, it's kind of fun. Scroll through.
- 12:45I'm going to pick #3 aha. Here we go.
- 12:48Here it is ripped from the headlines, Barry.
- 12:50OK. Oxford video game exhibition
- 12:53explores storytelling. Yes, now you and I are not
- 12:58gamers necessarily. Not at all.
- 13:00Not at all. Yeah, but I do know people, and
- 13:03you do as well, that are very much into gaming.
- 13:06And I guess this is about where it is today versus, you know,
- 13:10like the original Nintendo games were pretty standard stories,
- 13:15but now you have these fully immersive worlds, even have VR
- 13:18headsets where you can be a character.
- 13:20I mean, Rob Peetz, our movie guy could certainly speak to this
- 13:23and he's very much gamer and has AVR headset and is in to all
- 13:27this kind of stuff. Guess they're making a big push
- 13:30and some people think that this is, you know, a direct
- 13:34competitor to Hollywood is these really super immersive video
- 13:38games that are just, you know, sucking people in versus them
- 13:42going to the theater. What do you think about that?
- 13:44I could see that and you got a lot out of the headline, so
- 13:47thank you for that. I can actually see that
- 13:49happening because people are kind of craving that immersive
- 13:52experience. A lot of people aren't going out
- 13:54to bars and clubs and all that. They want kind of a different
- 13:58experience and a lot of the people are maybe not hanging out
- 14:00with friends as much. So they want to from the comfort
- 14:03of their own home, have this kind of interesting experience
- 14:06and be a part of the story. I think that's also part of this
- 14:08whole YouTube movement. We host a podcast.
- 14:10People want to be the stars of their own stories and for sure,
- 14:14but but get away from real life. It's not like go to the office
- 14:17video game. This is no.
- 14:19You know. So I think absolutely it's a
- 14:22huge business. We should actually maybe get Rob
- 14:23to touch on it if you wouldn't mind when he comes back in a few
- 14:26weeks to do and you guys are going to review an upcoming film
- 14:29and he. Not just any upcoming film, Jay.
- 14:31I forget the newest the newest film from Paul Thomas Anderson
- 14:35and it's called 1 Battle After Another with Leonardo DiCaprio,
- 14:39Sean Oh yeah and many others and it looks insane.
- 14:42Apparently the 1st 30 minutes of this movie has more action Jay
- 14:46than ET Anderson's entire filmography combined.
- 14:51Is that a lot? That's a.
- 14:53Lot because does he do a lot of action?
- 14:55Well that's the thing I guess. It pops up like there was action
- 14:59in Boogie Nights, there was some action in Magnolia.
- 15:02Not necessarily gunplay but this is apparently like there's so
- 15:06much going on in the 1st 30 minutes it's almost too much to
- 15:09digest. It's going to feel like an
- 15:11action movie. It's going to feel like at least
- 15:13for the 1st 30 Now, I understand the runtime kind of spooked you
- 15:17a little bit, and rightly so. This thing is coming in at 3
- 15:19hours long. So I don't know what has been
- 15:22cut out, if anything. But you know, with PT Anderson,
- 15:25he, you know, he's, I don't know how to explain it.
- 15:30He tells a full story. Let's just say that.
- 15:33He just lets it unfold and apparently it's getting amazing
- 15:36reviews. I enjoy watching one of his
- 15:38movies on DVD, like to where I can pause 30 times and take a
- 15:43break. OK, we wandered a bit off of
- 15:45that topic for a bit, so let's bring us back with one more RIP
- 15:48from the headlines. All right, I think we got to the
- 15:50bottom of that first one. As we say, how about this
- 15:54shortcut? The shortcut to close bonds,
- 15:57asking meaningful questions. Very.
- 16:00All right, you know something about this.
- 16:02And as do you, not just as a podcaster, but just as a well
- 16:06calibrated human being who understands that every
- 16:11interaction is not a Ted talk. In fact, it's a back and forth.
- 16:14It is a dance. That's how you get to create
- 16:18meaningful bonds. This one hits you a bit
- 16:21different. Explain that to me.
- 16:23You you really see the value in a good back and forth.
- 16:28I do, and in fact, it's one of my it's kind of a pet peeve for
- 16:32those who do not do that and just simply talk at you.
- 16:36I find that irritating. I got to be honest with you.
- 16:38So that's why I enjoy the company of yourself and other
- 16:41people that I know were, you know, you can actually have a
- 16:43back and forth conversation, but there are people as well who
- 16:46just kind of launch into long stories and maybe that's how
- 16:49they discover new things about people.
- 16:52I I don't know this not my preferred style.
- 16:54Well, you, I, I'll launch into no stories given half a chance.
- 16:59I, you bring it out in me and you and our other, you know, we
- 17:03had Craig Zavitz on. I marvel at the way the two of
- 17:06you in particular ask incredible questions in a social setting.
- 17:10You'll both find the people. You are both the center of
- 17:13attention. And I really I like I can study
- 17:15the questions that are asked because I don't ask a lot and I
- 17:19don't know what to ask. They don't come to me, but to
- 17:21you they seem to come from the heavens.
- 17:23Craig also has this gift where they'll just come and they'll be
- 17:25great open-ended questions. Yep, Yep.
- 17:28No, that is definitely a skill that Craig has.
- 17:30I would also say the same thing about executive producer Aldo
- 17:33Roma. He's also an expert in asking
- 17:36thoughtful, intelligent questions and not just waiting
- 17:40for his turn to start talking. Actually has an interest in the
- 17:44answer. Which is another thing that I
- 17:46don't know whether you can teach this stuff, Jay, or whether it's
- 17:48just kind of part of you or maybe maybe it is teachable, but
- 17:52maybe I don't know. I think yeah, it's, it's
- 17:55definitely a part of you to be able to be wired that way, to
- 17:58think that way. It's incredible.
- 17:59Anyway, that again, another one we got to the bottom of.
- 18:03You've got to ask meaningful questions.
- 18:04Maybe you want to write some down ahead of time.
- 18:06If you're like me and they don't come to you instantly, but or
- 18:10just stand next to Barry T Nixon, Craig Zabbits in a row, I
- 18:13mean you. You could do that, Jay.
- 18:15I will say though, you do ask good questions.
- 18:17So I, I don't think you, you know, don't sell yourself short.
- 18:19Maybe they don't come to you like a lightning bolt, but you
- 18:23do ask questions. You don't just launch into
- 18:25stories that you know about people that the other parties
- 18:29might not even know and therefore don't really care
- 18:31about. So you don't do.
- 18:33That, but that's true for that, yes.
- 18:35I don't like talking about myself too much.
- 18:37I think that's true. And so I will ask questions in a
- 18:40way to get the attention off of me and onto somebody else.
- 18:43For example, what would you like to say next?
- 18:46Because I think we're coming up on time, yeah.
- 18:48That's called a. Leading question.
- 18:50That's amazing. It's been a complete pleasure as
- 18:53always, Jay, to be with you each and every week.
