- 0:33I'm still a little bump in my to do it quicker.
- 0:39Welcome back to handsome with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:42commentary podcast, mr. Gary Russell.
- 0:46Hello? Hello there.
- 0:48I'm going to ask you a question now.
- 0:50You did this to me last time in the last episode.
- 0:52Go on. Why is it called hamster with
- 0:54the blunt penknife? I'm sure that's a quote from the
- 0:56doctor. Who isn't it?
- 0:57I'm afraid. I don't know it because I have
- 1:00super blunt penknife or do it quicker right 09, isn't it?
- 1:04Yes. Yeah you know what?
- 1:06Because this General has he seen everybody or courts are out And
- 1:09some of them got some bloody dreary titles.
- 1:11I tell you, I said, I want something that people are going
- 1:13to remember and the genius of this.
- 1:16He ain't a title, is the hamster Emoji, which is now used across
- 1:21social media, all the time to identify the podcast.
- 1:24So, it worked right? Let's work he and it worked
- 1:27well, I have one's called the nylon be praised and that work
- 1:30for similar reasons. But thank you for the question
- 1:36we are about to head into day of the Daleks episode 4.
- 1:41I've only got one question for you before we go in and that is
- 1:43this a satisfying conclusion to the story we have so far watched
- 1:47yes, without a shadow of a doubt as a succinct answer.
- 1:51Thank you everything you want. I think it's a shame.
- 1:54I mean, clearly we know that there was material that had to
- 1:58be cut at the end. The the unit seen that referred
- 2:01back to episode one and you do rather feel that The final stuff
- 2:06on film between Pertwee into Regional Styles.
- 2:09Just feels very rushed. And it kind of the he talks to
- 2:15Regional Styles. Oh, we've seen it, haven't we
- 2:17Joe? Yes, she said, boom, winds and
- 2:19sun because you can't go, oh, well, that's a bit abrupt
- 2:24because there's obviously a lot to pack into this episode and it
- 2:27uses up its its twenty two and a half minutes.
- 2:30Very, very, very quickly but there isn't a wasted Second in
- 2:34it it's a glorious episode of Doctor Who.
- 2:37Well, should we head in? I think we should.
- 2:40You're going to count us in. I will in five, four, three,
- 2:44two, one. Do you know?
- 2:47Yeah, I said to you earlier about watching this as a child
- 2:51I've had a lot of people. A lot of websites books.
- 2:55A lot of magazines, criticized the finale of this by saying
- 2:59there's only there's only like two or three Daleks I'm feeling.
- 3:04As a child, I was utterly convinced there were a hundred
- 3:08times attacking that house with you completely because that
- 3:11criticism is such an adult criticism.
- 3:15And when you're a kid you're sitting there, you're going to
- 3:17its dialects are no grounds attacking a house and unit
- 3:20soldiers, you don't notice things, only three dialects, and
- 3:2360 guns. You just go ahead.
- 3:26So tacky the house, it's exciting, brink of war and
- 3:29someone's gonna blow it up and there's it's all gone.
- 3:32Just utterly brilliant. Really brilliant.
- 3:35It's the first time this happened.
- 3:36All the doctors on screen, I don't know.
- 3:38Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is to do.
- 3:42This is why it was so exciting. It was like we'd seen troughton
- 3:45and heart and lung screamed in the first time since they both
- 3:47left the show. It was wonderful.
- 3:50You know, I think a man, he's got a point, you know, but the
- 3:53way that shot was framed, their we put me in the front looking
- 3:56out. You have the 20 was either side
- 3:57the Daleks inside it. There was a lot going on there.
- 4:00Yeah. In a tiny set, that's clearly
- 4:03far too small for It. I love it.
- 4:06I this is this is so clever. And God again.
- 4:11Audrey Woods is just brilliant with it.
- 4:14This is so Grand, isn't he? That's quite a find out all you
- 4:19because it's best even website them.
- 4:21I was saying earlier, you know, he's got dialogue like the most
- 4:23is even dressed. Like the - he's got the narrow
- 4:25collar and everything on there. I think Barry Letts is wrong
- 4:29when he talks about him being theatrical and over-the-top he
- 4:32isn't. He's just superb.
- 4:36Well, you know, he was a very small man.
- 4:38Let's He's allowed to be wrong occasionally, it is only
- 4:43occasionally. This is what came running.
- 4:45Also, Doris Day outfits that she really didn't like washing
- 4:48around That's interesting as well.
- 4:51There's also a hundred car it probably isn't and record, the
- 4:56guy playing the guard anyway, who becomes new controller at
- 4:59the end that is future's going to be wiped out and he's
- 5:02victories. Only going to last a few seconds
- 5:04anyway, but he again it's a tiny, little thankless part and
- 5:10he, but he's been in it for three episodes and he's really
- 5:12mesmerizing, he's very good. Let's count this classic look,
- 5:18and he's wearing a mask and he's got a beard is What you might as
- 5:21well be bearing? An ogre on mask for, you know,
- 5:23the expression he's able to give but he does.
- 5:26He has a very expressive face and plays cynicism and
- 5:30snarkiness. I think really, really well
- 5:33reminds me of one of those very short been with restrained
- 5:35anger, that is allowed to lean out every now and again, there's
- 5:38a little bit scary, bit, like some of those people that if
- 5:42you've ever been to sort of the Excel or Olympia, when they have
- 5:45those big events on where the guests are sort of signing
- 5:49autographs and He's a bit like the kind of people they employ
- 5:52their to walk around and be stewards.
- 5:55It's that same kind of sneery, I'm more important than you and
- 5:58you're hacking to queue up and do things and if I had a whip in
- 6:02my hand, I would absolutely use it.
- 6:06I go to one of those events. Now I'm going to be murdered by
- 6:09every one of those students. Well again I'm just going to
- 6:13point out very simple tricks to suggest if you miss it, I'll
- 6:17cushions on the floor sort of wine.
- 6:20Sal before I do again, it's that thing of trying to imply that in
- 6:25this sterile cold, everything's metallic.
- 6:28Everything's grey and green which is automatically sickly.
- 6:33Putting cushion. Sound, that's the height of
- 6:35luxury. Yes.
- 6:37Post-war kind of thing. Oh, this is this bit where he
- 6:41talks about the holes in the ground, isn't it?
- 6:44This is such a, this is pure, Exposition, but it adds a lot
- 6:48detail. Look, CAC, they, I know that
- 6:51people talk about and I think Barry interns about talked about
- 6:54this as well, that this this episode has too much.
- 6:57Exposition it, it doesn't for a kid at 8 years old watching
- 7:01this. This is the information you
- 7:02needed. This is, this is beautifully
- 7:05done, both fits and the bit later on where they talk about
- 7:08the time Paradox. Very clever.
- 7:10Writing because it just gets the message across and that whole,
- 7:14that's why I say there's the show.
- 7:16Don't tell thing is a load of old bollocks half the time.
- 7:19Was you do need to tell? It is a very good thing.
- 7:21If you've got good actors and good dialogue, you can get an
- 7:25awful lot of story across in a couple of lines and it's better
- 7:28to do that that that telling the audience and reminding them.
- 7:31What they've been watching is worth any number of fancy show.
- 7:35Don't tell shots but a slightly, but in classic who they are
- 7:38often had to use Because I didn't have the budget to show.
- 7:42Exactly. And you know what, sometimes my
- 7:44imagination could be a lot more disturbing than what I'll ever
- 7:46see us. Great.
- 7:47So they give me enough information.
- 7:49I'll fill in the blanks so that was that was a really lovely bit
- 7:54of cruel. The doctor, they're all my face
- 7:57is my family. We controllers for three
- 7:59generations and the doctors do a whole family of quislings great
- 8:03just on the nose. You know, he doesn't know
- 8:07nothing about being rude, to anybody and it's lovely.
- 8:10Miss the bit where Joe roll stars are screaming my head off?
- 8:13Yes. Been somebody that hates.
- 8:17We were probably waffling on about that.
- 8:18But yeah, and this is great for the very the very people but
- 8:23were trying to kill him episode 2 and I'll try to rescue it.
- 8:26Yeah and I'll I'll again this is what I was saying earlier about
- 8:29how good, I think, poor Bernard is as the film director because
- 8:34his use of and low shots in these and that is one of the
- 8:38Glorious deaths you Ever seen in Doctor.
- 8:40Who that mean you don't see. Bo has died.
- 8:43But his body when it's lying on the floor covered in blood with
- 8:47what looks like his leg blown off.
- 8:50He's really quite unpleasant for doctor.
- 8:52I remember as a kid watching that just thinking, oh he is,
- 8:55he's definitely dead. It's a shame.
- 8:58You have to have the Cutaway in studio, which they obviously
- 9:00forgot to shoot on location of him shouting, and that it cannot
- 9:05say quite the future. We've just a lot of concrete
- 9:07though, doesn't it? This and Frontier in space.
- 9:10But you know, I'm sorry in the nineties, a growing up in the
- 9:131970s, the future was concrete, we had, but we had the gone
- 9:19through Art Deco and when the 60s and 70s, we had brutalism,
- 9:22which I absolutely love as why I love the South Bank, because
- 9:26it's brutalism writ large. But, you know, this is what we
- 9:30saw as a kids growing up. This is what we had around us.
- 9:34We grew up in the sixties and seventies where it was concrete,
- 9:37everything concrete was the Great.
- 9:40Sir to everything. Everything was Square.
- 9:44Huh, shine goes, there is no attempt at Beauty.
- 9:50And then that turns, you know, you just know that 200 years in
- 9:53the future, that will still be better over.
- 9:56The years have been wiped out, but concrete tower blocks full
- 9:58of survived because that's what we were taught to believe and I
- 10:02think it's true. I think it works.
- 10:03I think it's sells the whole disturbing thing.
- 10:06Very, very well as depressing as hell as well as I did.
- 10:11You see how the cameras swung around their Works they got away
- 10:15not a lot of videos, get those Quiet Moments of oh shit.
- 10:20Yeah. Mike also hadn't occurred to me
- 10:24to a watching it now, this must be one of the very last stories,
- 10:28I'm sure moment. I said that 10,000 people will
- 10:30point out loads of others, but a very 60s thing is Fade to Black
- 10:34rather than Crossfade and poor Bernard uses a lot of Fade to
- 10:39Black. So, all the way through the
- 10:40story, rather than you and cross Fades between scenes and things
- 10:44like that, it's quite dramatic. And I can't think there's many
- 10:47more pertwee's after this, where we use Fade to Black.
- 10:50Sorry, Rather than dissolves. It's a very handsome looking,
- 10:54man, at the back of that shop there, you see, just peering out
- 10:57of the shower. It's, I'm sorry.
- 10:59My eyes are firmly fixed on Valentine bomber, who I think
- 11:01it's a very handsome man. Oh, Gary, there are beautiful,
- 11:04been throughout this story up there.
- 11:05Yeah. This is it this is the same as
- 11:09and it went Exposition as we work out and therefore as a kid
- 11:16watching this we working it out with them and seeing what they
- 11:19were talking about. It's so important to have
- 11:21Exposition seems like this it's really wrong when people say you
- 11:26shouldn't have. Exposition I just feel right?
- 11:28Is this story thinking about your audience?
- 11:30You're thinking about yourselves, it is history, what
- 11:33they criticize? Make this stuff.
- 11:35They know the story. They forget that the audience
- 11:37don't and this Kind of scene is really vital.
- 11:40I have to say, I want to say that this episode is very
- 11:45powerful for me memory-wise. So I watch this at my friend,
- 11:51Paul troutman's house. It was his birthday party.
- 11:54So this is one of the First episodes of Doctor Who is one
- 11:58color because we had a black and white TV right through to the
- 12:01late 70s. And I've seen one episode of the
- 12:04demons in color. And then I saw this episode
- 12:06episode 4 in Color and it was doubly.
- 12:10Exciting to see Daleks fighting people in color.
- 12:15I hadn't realized that there was a gold Dalek and Tulu Daleks.
- 12:18I've never just Daleks in black and white but suddenly seeing
- 12:22Doctor Who in color for the first time, what second time?
- 12:26But with Daleks, for the first time in color was a brilliant
- 12:29thing for me and I just sat there and I think that referred
- 12:34to it rather than day of the Daleks they refer to it.
- 12:37I think on a caption on Pages and his end of the Daleks and I
- 12:42remember being quite disappointed that the episode
- 12:44title was still day of the Daleks.
- 12:45I thought three episodes a day that is in the final episodes
- 12:47have been end of the Daleks with somehow, it didn't the day
- 12:51thing. So this is, you know, totally
- 12:53beautifully shot. He shoots the whole thing
- 12:55through foilage? Yeah.
- 12:58Come on. What is really just a boring
- 12:59shot of a man running from one end of a park to the other.
- 13:03Very clever, I'm still coming Thursday with the fact that you
- 13:05watch the whole of the Pertwee and most the Tom Baker's they
- 13:07were. Black and white the first time.
- 13:09First time we got a color tell he was facing Evil episode 1,
- 13:14which group, or revisit the all of those when they came out on
- 13:17video or whatever. However, you sort of it.
- 13:19No, but when I first started seeing pirate Doctor Who videos
- 13:22of poetry and Tom Baker stories. For the most part, they were the
- 13:26first time I was seeing them fully in color, I admit.
- 13:29But in the mid-70s sort of, I think from I think from Oscar
- 13:33man dragged her own words. Watching mask mondragor.
- 13:37No earlier than that early in that.
- 13:40So it would have been probably Android Invasion I think I came
- 13:44back. I've been on tour and I came
- 13:46back so be Android Invasion or possibly render morbius.
- 13:49I used to go to my friend Tim Farmer's house and he had a
- 13:52color Telly. So every Saturday, I would
- 13:54always send to my mom going to Tim's for the afternoon and it
- 13:56was solely because we wanted to watch, talk to.
- 13:58And I wanted to see in Colour, but personally we didn't get a
- 14:01color TV until they see people up.
- 14:03So one, so all of her tweets. We I say the only episode I ever
- 14:07saw in color of poetry, was episode 4 of the Demons episode
- 14:114 of day of the Daleks and episode 2 of cursor, Paladin
- 14:14with the only Pertwee stories I ever saw.
- 14:17In color on transmission, everything else is black and
- 14:20white. It didn't want to me.
- 14:22I'd Die Doctor Who television was black and white to me, you
- 14:25know. See it in color was exciting to
- 14:28go to a friend's house and they could afford to have a color TV,
- 14:30but we couldn't afford that. Do you know it some ways?
- 14:35Very envious if you saw this consecutively as it was going
- 14:38out. I didn't I watched I basically
- 14:41all the classic who I saw as the VHS is were released.
- 14:45But you know what? It was like putting together a
- 14:46massive exciting jigsaw puzzle because they just came out all
- 14:50over these dents or Rhythm to it at all.
- 14:54Hi, it's wonderful. Yeah, it was it was it's just
- 15:03for me, it's just Nostalgia. It's just my childhood and the
- 15:07fact I'm lucky enough that so much of my childhood, I can sit
- 15:12down and revisit on television and watch these things can watch
- 15:15Doctor, you can watch too. I mean, I'm I'm so disappointed
- 15:19that Ace of Wands, the first two years of age of 17 exist because
- 15:21that was a very important show in my childhood, but pretty much
- 15:26most of the other kids TV that H-E-B and BBC have the I watched
- 15:30I've got sitting on shiny disc out in the corridor there so I'm
- 15:35very, very lucky that we've got access to the stuff and we're
- 15:37very lucky that all of her tweets exists.
- 15:39Things like you know the bat of making television has obviously
- 15:44come on in Leaps and Bounds since this came out, but this is
- 15:47still great Telly. Like this can still be watched
- 15:50as great to have it. It's just exciting and it's you
- 15:53know, it's what we were saying earlier is really well paced.
- 15:56There's nothing wasted. Stood, other than possibly, the
- 16:00little trike seen. There's no wastage in this story
- 16:03at all. It just bounces along similar to
- 16:06what I was saying when we were at the BFI, the other week about
- 16:08a bond or snowmen, which I still maintain is the one of the most
- 16:13perfect six-part Doctor Who stories and certainly of the 60
- 16:17stuff, only that an enemy, the world, I think Justified six
- 16:20episodes, because there is no padding, there's no running
- 16:23around. There's no repetition at all in
- 16:25those two stories and why I think four parts generally,
- 16:28Actually well, but this is, this is great.
- 16:30Oh, they look that guy's giving you that side.
- 16:32I look again, he's great acts that blow whoever he is, it just
- 16:36works is there's just there's no wastage and you come away at the
- 16:40end of these kind of stories, just go, I've watched really
- 16:44good, exciting television, I love David.
- 16:47Alex, I just don't understand why people could have anything
- 16:52bad to say about it. It's it's beyond me, but I'm
- 16:55biased. It's beyond me that people can
- 16:58have anything. thing bad say about any Pertwee part from
- 17:00Klaus back sauce, which I'm the first person to have lots of bad
- 17:02things to say about the rest of Pertwee stuff is just to me is
- 17:08Flawless, whereas, I can point you a 100 other Doctor Who fans
- 17:14similar age to me, who will tell you that everything from robot
- 17:18through to logopolis is the best Doctor Who ever is, and I would
- 17:22sit there and argue that and go, it's bloody know it's, you know,
- 17:26her Thirteen, and one or two highlights after that.
- 17:32But frankly once Leela's gone Doctor Who, for me in the 70s,
- 17:36he's pretty dire until Pete Davidson comes along, and then
- 17:44it lifts again, and I said, they're a great team.
- 17:46They're in the middle of all of those, you stones of Bloods in
- 17:48your own drugs that are and Leisure Hive, and warriors gay
- 17:52and things like that. There's always a brilliant, Tom
- 17:55Baker stories. But overall, I Come away from
- 17:59those last three years of Tom Baker with the kind of anywhere
- 18:03as I'm sure. You know, I've had people on
- 18:05here that I'm entirely the opposite direction.
- 18:07Yeah, that's all it was Williams.
- 18:09Here are, you know, five of this a bit dreary Beyond me, how they
- 18:13did bad, what's that strange? And weirdly created people?
- 18:19The example of them all, they're all welcome here.
- 18:23Would you like to say about how this is structured?
- 18:26But also, you got all the mystery in episode 1.
- 18:28There's a load of explanation you have so to about what's
- 18:30going on. I think we spend just enough
- 18:32time in episode 3 in that future to see how shocking it is.
- 18:37Yep then. And so, it's an ever so forth.
- 18:40When we head back into contemporary times, we've got to
- 18:43sort this out and we've earned it.
- 18:45That's the point. Is we've earned their Victory.
- 18:48We've earned them going back to the Future Past rather To do
- 18:53this and making that choice to control of their saying, God,
- 18:57go, yeah, let's see what you can do.
- 19:01Obviously beautifully written. I'll be seen.
- 19:08I wanted ask a Spur to show. This is, this is, this is when I
- 19:11wrote them and said, you know, I want this scene, I still think
- 19:16this is absolutely masterful, scene of Doctor Who 70 stock
- 19:192/8. It's the first time, the Daleks
- 19:24have really behave, like Daleks actually in this story as well,
- 19:27because first time we've seen them exterminate anyone.
- 19:30He's just, it's everything you've waited for weeks to watch
- 19:36And then this guy comes out and it's just like yeah, the
- 19:38ultimate betrayal and he's so smug as he walks away these
- 19:42little green. It's so like, haha, dogs down
- 19:44the door, doesn't he? Like yeah, he has no idea that
- 19:47he's about to just wink out of existence in about 20 minutes
- 19:51time. We kind of shows you that the
- 19:53poor control of our Carnival circumstances.
- 19:55They've just chosen the next dialog, right?
- 19:56You're in charge now yeah, though.
- 19:59Isn't it? That's, it's that typical
- 20:01darling thing. Someone comes on goes back,
- 20:03guys, betraying you. And the dollar It's go.
- 20:05I will believe you and will exterminate him and you've
- 20:08automatically become the new leader.
- 20:09It's great way. If you understand Daleks, it's a
- 20:12great way to always stay in charge with realize the child.
- 20:16I've never clicked in my head later actually, don't leave that
- 20:18room until now when they go back from to camera angles, for
- 20:24three-and-a-half episodes, as to Davis was paying attention here
- 20:28with the newscaster. Well, this is a fairly standard
- 20:33drama thing in the 70s. Actually did have real
- 20:35newscasters. I mean, I think Alex Macintosh
- 20:38was a, I think it's a reasonable reporter and then he was, he was
- 20:44mainstream. It's like we'd had Kenneth
- 20:45Kendall in war machines. And every other show always use
- 20:51Corbett, Woodall and I think, Alex macintoshes, it was a local
- 20:57news and he was an actor as well, but he was a local news.
- 21:00Reporter. I think they got into this.
- 21:02Now again open up magic magic because she was Ill.
- 21:08That is sure exactly how it will be shot on the news.
- 21:11We just have a few stole the cars coming in, then some
- 21:13handheld work as they go and into this whole thing is a bit
- 21:18iffy. Why are these people letting
- 21:20them know that they're kind of solute the doctor anything?
- 21:22I'm sorry, but you're not unit. Your the regular army you
- 21:25wouldn't have a clue who he was but do you love that Courtney's?
- 21:29Delivery Slide in a minute now. Be quiet sir.
- 21:32Yeah, it's great. This is very clever.
- 21:35This whole sort of Realizing the whole thing was sure and the
- 21:40bomb is just claiming that that lovely scene coming up which
- 21:43we'll talk about in a minute with sure.
- 21:45And here we have, here's your why do people complain about
- 21:48this? Yes.
- 21:50Don't waste. It looks like there's loads
- 21:51coming out, you know. I'll just shoot it over and over
- 21:54again and so there are more Daleks and Mauro bronze and it
- 21:57just works. And yes, you don't eat.
- 22:00He probably makes a mistake on the actual attack on the house
- 22:04by not doing the same kind of cheating and seeing Some groups
- 22:08of doubt, it's coming from different angles, but who cares?
- 22:11I think I was just swept up in this.
- 22:16Yeah, absolutely. So as I've, it's just brilliant,
- 22:20it was that, oh my God, the doctor attacking not quite sure
- 22:23how they get around that bit of water, but we won't ask about
- 22:26that, have it as a sort of Glide across, just the French Windows,
- 22:31you know, make a very graceful entrance into the building.
- 22:36And I have in my head, which I know doesn't exist, but I had in
- 22:40my head for many many years, but they did smash through the glass
- 22:44windows. But, of course, that's the old
- 22:46running in episode one that does that.
- 22:48But in my head, I remember darling.
- 22:51Its warming it and I'm sure his tents is novelizations to blame
- 22:54for this, the doll. It's swarming in and coming
- 22:57through those glass windows, and as it is, it's two dialects in a
- 23:00corridor. But I remember it as a kid
- 23:04convincing myself. The actually between twenty
- 23:07dollars coming in through every possible angle into the house
- 23:10and it was a complete sort of routing of the house.
- 23:13And this is what you do, as a kid, your your mind.
- 23:16You get so caught up in the story when you're eight years
- 23:18old that you fill in the bits that even they couldn't shoot.
- 23:22And you've convinced yourself within 10 minutes of the program
- 23:24ending, that's actually what you saw.
- 23:30That's so overrated and a waste of time, it's great.
- 23:34How the plot again this Ascending where he sets off the
- 23:37Bobby takes out the Daleks they've got out of the
- 23:39politicians. It's so neat, it's so Terrance
- 23:42dicks. He's clever.
- 23:44It's a well I think that's perhaps a I think that's
- 23:46probably Louis Marx because I think that's in his original
- 23:49ghost hunters or whatever it was called idea of these people with
- 23:54the time Paradox coming back and creating it themselves.
- 23:57Ivan terracing is just the cleverness of putting Garlic's
- 24:01and giving them a reason to do it but I think we'll never
- 24:04really know that. The right style.
- 24:06You check with her one, her one scene because she was.
- 24:09Until at this point, I love all the different cars and the
- 24:12different cultures and you know, there's people from different
- 24:15countries in this sequence. It's very adventurous as a
- 24:19obviously, a lot of money spent on Extras in this story because
- 24:22apart from unit soldiers as a hell of a lot of diplomats and
- 24:26things. Like, I was inside the winters,
- 24:29all right? This is the point where I was,
- 24:31you know, this is Ricky you be, isn't it going?
- 24:33Not rushing you, but I wasn't in the Dalek.
- 24:36Operator can remember, going through that window, but I was
- 24:39convinced you saw him go all the way through the window and go
- 24:42through the big room that we've seen before.
- 24:46Jimmy Winston is amazing in here.
- 24:48I think he's great actor but, isn't it great?
- 24:50They've they took him out the action early enough.
- 24:53You've completely forgotten about.
- 24:54Absolutely, but as a kid, I didn't have to say That never
- 24:57confused me as a kid because I think in the back of my head
- 25:00because we knew he hadn't been killed by no Grand watching
- 25:04this. As a kid, I was always thinking,
- 25:05well, I'm on surest a rusher behind.
- 25:07Someone needs to go back and get him.
- 25:09That poor bloke. Stuck in the 20th century and he
- 25:12should be home with all his friends in the 22nd.
- 25:14Oh wait a minute. He's actually got something to
- 25:16do here and then when and directions that thing hang on.
- 25:19Sure, we thought he was dead. Maybe still alive.
- 25:21I'm not going as a kid. I was going.
- 25:23Yes, yes, that's him. Whereas I forgot, I'm completing
- 25:28our wedding. Of course.
- 25:30Yeah, he's still there. I thought you loved our necks in
- 25:35Congress saying zypher. Guess oh no not this time
- 25:40brilliant. I just remember this as a kid
- 25:43and being so excited and that big explosion that is over and
- 25:47done with very very quickly and suddenly, yes this is.
- 25:50This is the only down point of the whole thing.
- 25:52Is it just ends when it just ends.
- 25:56And you know, with hindsight, we now know, this wasn't meant to
- 25:59be the ending at all and it is a little bit disappointing that
- 26:03off. After all, that excitement, and
- 26:04all that Adventure. There's there's no real older
- 26:09adults just been blown up. There's no, no one talks about
- 26:12it. No one says the dollars have
- 26:14gone and blah blah, Bartman and there's no units, no Brigadier
- 26:17at the end which I think is a shame.
- 26:19You think I'm back to something like, ambassador's of death,
- 26:22where you spent five minutes, we've go right Joe.
- 26:24You can stay at style is you can stay here and sort this out,
- 26:26right? I'm off.
- 26:27So yeah, you know, now we just cut, we got next story.
- 26:31Well, I think that's just, you know, they talk Sleep.
- 26:34Just ran out of time on the episode, but it doesn't matter
- 26:36because it's just so brilliant and so it was for.
- 26:41Can you be able to write on the subject of this being brilliant?
- 26:46Would you then indulge me to give three reasons as to why I
- 26:50have three only I'm afraid, we'll do three each one back and
- 26:53forth as to why people should go watch this immediately.
- 26:59Three, great rewrite. Brilliant actors not just the
- 27:03main casts, not just delete regulars, but people like Audrey
- 27:07woods and all the Ana Barian and Valentine Palmer and Scott,
- 27:12Frederick's and Jimmy Winston all over it.
- 27:14So there's there isn't a Duff performance in the entire story,
- 27:18so that's important. The the special effects that
- 27:22the, The Time Tunnel effects and everything like that.
- 27:24It's so 70s. It just screams 70s at you.
- 27:27Without being the over-the-top colorful Blair that close of
- 27:32access, did it just holds on. And then the most important
- 27:36thing, I think for this story, that makes it so, watchable is
- 27:39it's just a damn good story with a very clever beginning of very
- 27:42clever middle and a very clever end.
- 27:44It just works it just sings along and he's got Daleks and
- 27:49it's got the doctor tied to a mind analysis machine, and all
- 27:54these moments that make Daleks. So, Exciting.
- 27:58Actually, they're barely in it and yet you still come away
- 28:03thinking. I've just seen a brilliant,
- 28:04Dalek story. I'll bury I've got two three
- 28:07now. Enjoy the back of that, okay.
- 28:10All right, I'll go. I'll be very quick.
- 28:11I'm going to say the character of the controller who I think is
- 28:15given by magnificent debt by Audrey woods and has very
- 28:19surprising moments throughout. Honestly, Dudley Simpson.
- 28:24This is the point where he's allowed to not to stop.
- 28:27It all electronic music which he didn't season AIDS and as over
- 28:33is on form and is you know, creating the language of drama
- 28:37for Doctor Who throughout the seventies marvelous and three,
- 28:43I'm going to say me, I might bility as a child to skip over
- 28:49any deficiencies in the production that they might have
- 28:51been and fill in the blanks. And convince myself that that
- 28:55climax was every bit as What on that special edition version?
- 28:59I think it's improved for saying all those.
- 29:01No it's not it's not improved at all because it is obvious it
- 29:07makes it obvious. Whereas here you're using your
- 29:09imagination and here you're just going this is thrilling.
- 29:13This this was you know and also the special edition isn't
- 29:18directed by Paul Bernard and his film work is so bloody good in
- 29:23this cereal that the moment you try and drop shots in that have
- 29:26been shot by the people who But they are, it doesn't mesh very
- 29:30well, it sort of jolt. That's I'm never a big fan of
- 29:34special edition Doctor Who stories anyway with extra seams
- 29:38and things. I don't really like them in the
- 29:39put new special effects in but p.m. off its marvelous reaction
- 29:43to the five doctors he went, did you see that special edition
- 29:46version of the five doctors, like put out I took out those
- 29:48things for a reason you know. It's not an exact that there is
- 29:52bizarre planet of fire one with new stuff so it's just like
- 29:57that. Doctor, I want people to leave
- 29:59Doctor Who as it was. I just don't think you need to
- 30:03keep farting around and tweaking partly.
- 30:06Because as I said to you before, it also it dates far more than
- 30:11the original 60's and 70's and 80's Duffy DGI fire, isn't it?
- 30:15Looks and it just looks terrible.
- 30:17Now, it looks worse than anything.
- 30:19They did back in the 70s. Well, you know, what I think is
- 30:21the bizarre is Choice. Ever met was the Enlightenment
- 30:24while where they decided to cut it down and make it as I see as
- 30:28like a new series. I'm like it just wasn't being
- 30:32made that way. And I've blessed, they got Fiona
- 30:34coming in and and she had her input into how she would make it
- 30:38now, but they lost 20 minutes like, how can you destroy?
- 30:44I mean, I'm not seeing, but how can you lose 20 minutes or even
- 30:46like minutes? It's another thing to have
- 30:48almost perfect Doctor Who four-part story you don't want
- 30:51to lose 20 minutes from. You want actually had a bit more
- 30:54in. I think for enlightenment, I
- 30:55love Enlightenment, brilliant story.
- 30:57Fantastic Gary with the that does leave me to ask you a
- 31:00question because environment is one of my five 80s Doctor, Who
- 31:05stories. I haven't got a commentary on
- 31:07yet and we've done the sixties and we've done the 70s.
- 31:11Yeah. I can't get out of that now, can
- 31:14I, I'm happily love to do Enlightenment.
- 31:18Definitely I love it. Call her brilliant, I'll add
- 31:22another era. You said that is like Comfort,
- 31:25who to you and it's a narrow. I have a bit difficulty.
- 31:27We've actually I like to really getting some for me is is just
- 31:32just yeah. It's it's a different form.
- 31:34Its Nostalgia again like poetry is was a different form of
- 31:37nostalgia because it's my early years in Doctor Who fandom it's
- 31:41when I was doing my fanzine, it's when I was beginning to
- 31:45sort of make slightly more valued judgments on things.
- 31:48So I have a, I have a enormous passion for those three days, it
- 31:52was some years, I think, you know, and again, it's that
- 31:56middle year is just Really, really good for me because lots
- 31:59of people dis it and I think know I love season 20, I think
- 32:03it's wonderful on a wonderful American.
- 32:05Come on and claim that the Kings demons, one of his favorite
- 32:09stories. Honestly, it was a two-hour
- 32:11conversation. I'll never forget.
- 32:13It was marvelous. Well, good luck to them.
- 32:16I'm glad they're able to see that in the Kings demons.
- 32:20Yeah to yeah, I will say Davidson two-parters are not
- 32:23though the highlight and if you were the awaiting is infinitely.
- 32:27Kassadin the Kings demons. I was feel like with Davison
- 32:30when it's good, it's really good and way I could, it's right now
- 32:38are creepily. She knows that I like I got I
- 32:43got a soft spot for Arkham Infinity partly because it's
- 32:45Gallifreyan time, Lords. And that's always going to open
- 32:49doors for me. Anyway.
- 32:49I, the moment I see a Time rolled collar.
- 32:52I'm not, yeah, this story is brilliant Infinity.
- 32:55Lot of people do because There's something desperately.
- 33:00Again, there's something quite clever about story.
- 33:02It's very good idea behind it is.
- 33:04Johnny burn who I do think it's very, very good writer and it's
- 33:08just fun. I think it's a fun story.
- 33:11It has some terrible moment. It has the space chicken with
- 33:15here. Yeah, no one in their right
- 33:17mind. Should ever ever allow that to
- 33:19go on screen? Black strips over a few lawyers.
- 33:25Yeah, II have a A simplistic love rocking Infinity, but then
- 33:30as I It season 20, and I have a hard job not liking season 20
- 33:35part from now you can steam it. Enlightenment.
- 33:39Here we come. All right.
- 33:41Leaves me to say, thank you very much for your time.
- 33:44I just been an utter pleasure. Once again, thank you for
- 33:46hosting us. Until next time.
- 33:49All right, take care.
