- 0:00We are back on for another podcast.
- 0:03We had a couple of weeks off, 2 weeks off I believe, but we're
- 0:09back. How's it feel to be back, mic in
- 0:13hand, sort of speak? Ah, good, good good.
- 0:16Mostly I'm just looking around and thinking of all the cleaning
- 0:18and moving that I need to do as this room gets redone this week.
- 0:22Is this most likely the last podcast with this look?
- 0:26Yes, yes, it is. Yeah, babe, Abby will no longer
- 0:30be able to sit on the couch with us when we pod because this
- 0:33couch is going to move to the living room and and we're going
- 0:37to have some chairs, which by the way, we're going to pick up
- 0:39at 7 PMI. Will not be going.
- 0:42You will because you have to help me carry them.
- 0:44They're very light. I have.
- 0:45Tasks. You never know if they're light.
- 0:47Those might be heavy bases. 7's an awful time to schedule
- 0:51something. Well, they picked so.
- 0:53Where's it at? I have no idea yet.
- 0:55Well, you might want to check because you've done that before
- 0:57and then they're in Riverside and we're not going to
- 1:00Riverside. I think these are nearby.
- 1:02It says one mile. Well, good.
- 1:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:06So anyways, yeah. Well, you know, we're going to
- 1:08have some swivel chairs that are kind of cool little modern, and
- 1:13then I'm going to pick up. They're kind of similar to these
- 1:17in a way, but nothing like them. The side chairs are tables where
- 1:22we'll each have our own, but they're meant for you to like be
- 1:25laptop stands and they have a cup holder on them.
- 1:28They're from IKEA and I'm thinking those for like, so if
- 1:33we do need a laptop to check things or whatnot, we can.
- 1:37What's my budget going to be on all this stuff?
- 1:42I think I can keep it under 5 hundo.
- 1:44That's not bad. Yeah.
- 1:46Lately you've been blowing money like Jeff Bezos.
- 1:49No, I have not been. Yes.
- 1:52No, yes. No.
- 1:55Anyways, yeah, so in the wallpaper arrives tonight
- 1:58between 4:45 and 7:45 S Tomorrow starts my my task of moving this
- 2:05couch out and starting to scrub down all the walls or move
- 2:09everything so I can start hanging the wallpaper really
- 2:13darken up the room and then, you know, we'll move the chairs in
- 2:18and coffee table will be gone. Hang some more panelling on the
- 2:23other wall. So we have three different walls
- 2:25to film from and some decorations for this wall.
- 2:35There's some really cool ones that I want that I have picked
- 2:37out. Don't you worry, you know, kind
- 2:41of like give like old school cigar library vibes, but in a,
- 2:49you know, in a cool way. And yeah.
- 2:55So hopefully I can finish that before next week when we need to
- 2:59film another pod and and you all get to see the the room
- 3:04completed for the most part. And then I think we're going to
- 3:11now it would, the more I'm seeing this, I think the the
- 3:15Arrow station would fit in here against that wall.
- 3:18But I don't, I don't know that I'll move it in.
- 3:22I'll wait till we have this couch out there.
- 3:24And the other couch, you know, has been removed by somebody to
- 3:29see. I think, you know, maybe we'll
- 3:31keep it out there, though I do prefer to keep everything in
- 3:34here. But yeah, got a new new kind of
- 3:40tool table, I guess you could say to do some, some arrow
- 3:46builds on going to take that up ourselves so we can mod saw.
- 3:50Yeah, it's going to get mounted to the table and and got a paper
- 3:57tuner. We've got a got to hang up
- 4:01somewhere over the rainbow. I don't know where.
- 4:04That's kind of why I wanted the frame, so we don't have to like
- 4:07hang it from anywhere and then like set a bag up and all that.
- 4:14We just prop it up on the frame. But yeah, lots of things to, you
- 4:20know, live in condo, life's difficult.
- 4:22You really got to like get in your IKEA brain and learn how to
- 4:26organize. And it's coming a long ways to
- 4:30to be able to run a business and a household out of out of 900
- 4:36square feet. But it's moving along and I
- 4:41think this room will look great when it's done, as will the
- 4:43Arrow station and and still be able to have, you know, your
- 4:49office in here to work from so. Well, after that riveting
- 4:57segment, yeah, I'm sure the audience was on the edge of
- 5:00their. Yeah, they love design.
- 5:02Yeah, and your energy was just bursting.
- 5:05Well, you kind of asked at a very inopportune time to do a
- 5:08pod. It's kind of like nap time.
- 5:11I just had to clean a bunch of nasty stuff out of your your
- 5:15rental. I don't miss those days of
- 5:18cleaning rentals and yeah, so I'm kind of in like break mind
- 5:24mode, right? Now I feel like there's so many
- 5:26tasks. There are a lot of tasks.
- 5:29Yeah, with my rental being vacant for the first time in a
- 5:32couple of years, so get that, hopefully rent it out again
- 5:37within the next month would be nice.
- 5:40And then as far as you know, my schedule goes, don't I don't
- 5:44have anything travel wise coming up or even video wise.
- 5:48I have nothing. So I need to come up with some
- 5:51ideas. I mean, I have two videos to
- 5:53edit, but then after that, which will cover me for a couple of
- 5:56weeks. But you know, I would like to
- 5:58get some new ideas to fresh stuff to film.
- 6:04And unfortunately I struck out on the draws this year.
- 6:07So don't really have any hunting other than local stuff.
- 6:10I do, I do want to do you know, I, I pitched the idea to you for
- 6:13some local hunting and I do want to do that.
- 6:16I think that would be fun. So maybe we could do that, do a
- 6:19couple other things. And then you obviously, I didn't
- 6:23think we'll do some filming in New Jersey, you know, which may
- 6:27come out with a video as well. So that'll be good.
- 6:30And then you have some ideas with your arrow stuff, which I
- 6:33imagine we'll probably do after New Jersey.
- 6:35I don't I'm not sure what your plan is.
- 6:37And then but you know, it'd be nice to get some some fresh
- 6:41stuff going and and bows will be dropping soon, new bows.
- 6:45So like, that'll be some stuff and and everything, but yeah,
- 6:49for now, just getting caught up on, you know, kind of life stuff
- 6:53after a bit of a whirlwind of a year getting back on the pod and
- 7:00yeah, it's been fun. Contract season is coming up, so
- 7:04renewing some contracts and signing some new ones and things
- 7:08like that. It's never ending, right?
- 7:11Yeah, yeah, kind of a, you know, interesting that it feels like a
- 7:16little low period, even though it's for most people, it's smack
- 7:19dab in the middle of the start of hunting season.
- 7:22Yeah, but when you're in the West, it's like the time is a
- 7:24little different. Yeah.
- 7:25I mean, ours started, you know, the last week of August and
- 7:29we've been going for July. Yeah.
- 7:31And you know, we did that for like 10 days or whatever in
- 7:36July. I don't remember how long.
- 7:37We were up there for quite a while and then had a little like
- 7:412 1/2 week break and then have been gone for the last like 35
- 7:46days hunting. Across 2 states.
- 7:49And we did get a. You got a deer.
- 7:51Congratulations. Yeah.
- 7:53Yeah. Three by three meal deer.
- 7:55You're a beautiful buck. Yeah, trying to preserve his
- 7:58velvet right now as best we can. Yeah, smell, it'll be, it'll be
- 8:01nice. But yeah.
- 8:02He definitely has to remain in the freezer for quite some time.
- 8:05He's a beauty. So that was pretty exciting and
- 8:08didn't take you too long. You know, it was cool that you
- 8:12and Garrett actually ended up shooting a deer in the same day
- 8:16recovering I'm. One in the morning, 1:00 in the
- 8:18afternoon. Yeah, and you know, it was just
- 8:23it was a good hunt. I think we we had at one point
- 8:27or another, we had five different hunters in camp and
- 8:33the first part and we only filled 2 tags.
- 8:35I do feel like we should have probably filled more than that,
- 8:38but we we filled 2 tags which was great.
- 8:42You and Garrett. Garrett was, I mean as efficient
- 8:45as it gets. Pops in for one afternoon.
- 8:47In in reality, yeah all 5 hunters should have failed.
- 8:52Every hunter had a shot. Had.
- 8:54It's not multiple. And some like that I would call
- 8:57layup. Oh yeah, shock.
- 8:58Yeah, sure. But I thought the hunt was a lot
- 9:01of fun. I mean, it was kind of a new
- 9:02area for us and we had the Kawasaki Ridge side by side,
- 9:07which was having the Crew Cab was key and we had this standard
- 9:12as well. Shout out to Kawasaki.
- 9:15Maybe they could be the sponsor of the segment.
- 9:16Really cool that they pitched us that rig for a month and 1/2.
- 9:20It really helped. And here's the thing, if you're
- 9:23thinking about getting a Kawasaki side by side, the
- 9:28single cab I think is perfect. If you're mostly, and when I say
- 9:33mostly, probably 80% of the time or more hunting by yourself or
- 9:38with only one other person, I would get the standard Ridge.
- 9:41It turns better, it stores better, it's smaller, turns
- 9:46sharper. But if you're hunting fairly
- 9:50often with more than two people so like 2 to 4, definitely get
- 9:56the Crew Cab. Yeah, For the price difference
- 9:58in the two, it is to be being that.
- 10:02Oh yeah, about 9:00 or so. You know which just say that
- 10:07lightly if you know, I get that's not lightly, but
- 10:10likelihood is, is that you're financing your vehicle anyways.
- 10:15You're side by side. So I mean, if you can splurge
- 10:18for the larger one, if it's a necessity for you that you hunt
- 10:23with more than two people, more than you and another person,
- 10:25often it's, it's it's again, it's so much more worth it.
- 10:31It's because we are all the time at minimum, usually the three of
- 10:35us and and three people just wedged and, and I'm a small
- 10:39female. If you hunt with three dudes,
- 10:41like no, ain't no way you're putting a dude in the middle
- 10:44with all three of your bows. Well, and, and another thing
- 10:47too, I really like. So I guess there's a couple
- 10:49versions of the Crew Cab. The one we had was the XR, which
- 10:51has that center console in the middle.
- 10:53That was very nice for for the camera.
- 10:57Storage. But anyway, I don't want to
- 10:59stick on that too long. But anyway, just if you're going
- 11:01to try one, that would be my suggestion.
- 11:03Single cab if you're mostly one to two people and if you're two
- 11:07to four, I would, I would go the bigger one.
- 11:09But both are great. So that was fun.
- 11:14I don't know. I mean, that was your biggest
- 11:15buck, You know, what was, what was that moment like to put your
- 11:22hands on his horns and, and get to take a look at him and.
- 11:26Well, I mean you'll this will obviously likely come out before
- 11:31the. This will be out before the
- 11:33video video. This will be out Wednesday.
- 11:35That video. Should be out Sunday so you.
- 11:38Know if I finish it? Wait a few more days and then
- 11:40you'll see the video come out of that hunt of garrets and I's
- 11:44bucks. But, you know, from the moment
- 11:47I'll start from the the jumping out of the vehicle like it was
- 11:52just one of those ones where he was just far enough away and it
- 11:55lined up to be just in the right spot to where, you know, I was
- 12:01able to use trees to get, you know, close some distance.
- 12:06And I probably closed 30 yards from, you know, leaving the rig
- 12:11to, you know, to where I ended up shooting.
- 12:15And, you know, I, I, I almost wish that I had seen that spikes
- 12:22so that I could have like maneuvered a little differently
- 12:26and tried to close a little more distance.
- 12:30Because had he turned to like just feet up, I could have
- 12:32closed another tree depending on what the the spike was doing.
- 12:36But I had zero clue that that spike was there.
- 12:43Yeah. I was so zoned in on watching
- 12:45him and it was going so smoothly.
- 12:48I mean, I was moving up in distance and closing the
- 12:53distance and he was just feeding parallel to me.
- 12:57And I was able to then like step out from the tree and draw and
- 13:01kind of, you know, angle myself. And then then it just kind of
- 13:07became a cluster. And I will definitely say the
- 13:12distance that I got in the penetration that I got, I am
- 13:16more than happy with. It's what I've been working
- 13:19towards building a setup for unfortunately, but fortunately I
- 13:23got to change that up now to for a different same brand,
- 13:28different type of arrow. But I, I'm sure with some
- 13:33experimenting we can get to that same, you know, penetration
- 13:38level and whatnot. Very happy with that.
- 13:41Unfortunately just you know, shooting 50 ish pounds and that
- 13:46distance 80 yards this far and it's a lot of time for my arrow
- 13:54to get there and it's a lot of time to allow the animal to
- 13:58react. I think it's probably two or
- 13:59three seconds, which for a year is you know could be the
- 14:05difference in there and gone. Yeah, I mean, you're probably
- 14:08going to get cooked for saying the distance usually like you
- 14:11won't say the distance as far. As I mean you're going to get
- 14:148000 comments from people who ask what was the distance
- 14:17anyways. So it's like there's no point in
- 14:20in hiding it. I think it's good lessons
- 14:22learned, but. You think that's you want to
- 14:24shoot? Me.
- 14:25What I'm clarifying is that that is is too.
- 14:29Far, So what do you think is a good distance for you to shoot
- 14:3260 and less? Somewhere probably between 60
- 14:36and 65 is going to be a very effective range, I think for the
- 14:40speed of my my bow right now. You know, if they're they're
- 14:48calm and unalert or maybe not facing me like looking another
- 14:53direction, calm, feeding, bedded, you have it whatever.
- 14:59Maybe you could poke 70. I just don't think that's wise
- 15:03until, you know, maybe I'm pulling another 5 lbs or
- 15:06something. So you can, every little bit of
- 15:10that helps speed up the bow, which helps get the arrow there
- 15:14faster and you know, which allows for a more effective shot
- 15:22because you know, it doesn't matter if the placement would
- 15:28have been perfect. You know, if you knew that it
- 15:32was perfect, that animal can do exactly what happened.
- 15:36And I won't give away in this so you can go watch the video, but
- 15:40you know, things went sideways fast.
- 15:44And luckily, upon recovering him, it was very evident that he
- 15:50did a crash landing and died upon his run to where he died
- 15:56at. You know, he didn't he, we
- 15:58didn't find him bedded up. We didn't find him in a, a
- 16:01bedded position. It was very evident he crashed
- 16:05over that log and died and, you know, extremely lethal.
- 16:12Now what I say to choose to take that shot.
- 16:16We talked about this a lot on the trip to purposefully take
- 16:20that shot. It's so tricky.
- 16:22And and you debated this like, because people will say like
- 16:26that's so immoral. Do we have do we have some
- 16:30important news or. No, I'm just getting some straps
- 16:33dropped at the OR some native release straps.
- 16:35So if you guys want native release straps or mirror archery
- 16:38straps, quick little side piece, both of which I'm getting a big
- 16:42restock today. So any color, any size for the
- 16:47natives will be available on boatcycles.com.
- 16:53So anyway, yeah, quick. Update We we debated this whole
- 16:58like, you know, as people call it the the Texas heart shot as a
- 17:04purposeful shot verse a frontal and people always will harp
- 17:09like, you know, how immoral or, you know, terrible it is to to
- 17:15take a Texas harsh shot. Not that I took that on purpose.
- 17:19No, obviously not. Yeah, and you'll see in the
- 17:21video it's very evident that I did not but but and we're like,
- 17:29well, I mean both are extremely lethal when placed correctly.
- 17:33But here's I think the issue with a Texas harsh shot and we
- 17:38discussed this on the trip, is that one is a shorter distance
- 17:44from penetration to vitals. And so one, bleeding can occur
- 17:52more likely if placed correctly and you don't hit the shoulder
- 17:55or you know, the chest bone or anything, any, anything that's
- 17:59going to inhibit you. So you're going to have a better
- 18:08blood trail. And two, you're going to reach
- 18:12vitals a lot faster, so potentially put them down a lot
- 18:15quicker. On a frontal.
- 18:16On a frontal, whereas the Texas heart shot though extremely
- 18:21lethal, say you don't get great penetration, it's lethal that
- 18:28animals just going to take forever to die and it's going to
- 18:31be very painful for them. They're going to get very sick
- 18:35and and secondly, your blood trail, it's going to be next to
- 18:42nothing potentially unless maybe you cut some femoral in there,
- 18:46you get a good angle or something happens, you get
- 18:49lucky. Likelihood is your blood trails
- 18:52going to be but though, I mean, you're going straight into
- 18:55stomach and intestines before you even potentially enter a
- 19:00vitals cavity. If you do, if you get good
- 19:03penetration, in which case like mine did, he died very quickly
- 19:07because we got all the way up there.
- 19:09But what if you don't? That's the risk you run with
- 19:14purposefully taking a Texas heart shot is like you're just
- 19:19lessening your chances of recovery.
- 19:21You're you're. Yeah, I mean.
- 19:23You're also lengthening your recovery process because they
- 19:28got to get sick first. I mean, look, here's the deal.
- 19:30I don't know anyone who shoots for a Texas heart shot
- 19:34intentionally. People will shoot for frontals
- 19:37intentionally occasionally. But my, my point is, I think
- 19:42it's interesting that one is fully not maybe not fully
- 19:45accepted, but largely accepted in, in the community as being
- 19:51like, oh, that's fine to take being a frontal.
- 19:55But meanwhile, if you were to say, oh, I purposely did a Texas
- 20:00heart shot, I had a friggin deer at 25 yards and I shot a Texas
- 20:04heart shot, you'll get killed for that.
- 20:09Right. And I'm not saying I've, I've
- 20:11never done a Texas heart shot intentionally.
- 20:13Maybe I have on a follow up shot, but never on an additional
- 20:17shot or initial shot. But when I think about it in my
- 20:22head, it seems sort of stupid that if I were to frontal
- 20:27something at 25 yards and he didn't jump the string and I
- 20:29just hit him right in the front of the chest, people would say
- 20:33it was a great shot. But if I did the exact same
- 20:36thing but he's just turned around same distance, I probably
- 20:40would get killed for that. Why?
- 20:45What I just explained is why I think is why.
- 20:48Well, and I also think it's just like societal norms, which I
- 20:51think are there for a reason, but I think it's there are times
- 20:55where you need to sort of rethink things.
- 20:57You know, like I've, I've heard many arguments over the years
- 21:01that made me like shift my thoughts like I used to be, you
- 21:06know, I still love close shots. That's my thing in archery.
- 21:10I love shooting stuff like between 10 and 40 yards.
- 21:14I love getting close. That's what I like.
- 21:17However, you know, if the opportunity arises, I'm really
- 21:20comfortable and something's at 75 yards, I don't have a problem
- 21:24shooting something further. Now it was in the past, I
- 21:27wouldn't have, but I heard a guy make a argument one time that I
- 21:31thought was pretty interesting. He was like saying how OK
- 21:37hunters are predators, right? And there's of course, we always
- 21:43want to make the best, fastest MO ethical, clean kill.
- 21:47And that's what we strive to do. It's why we practice here
- 21:49around. We try to take shots that we're
- 21:51comfortable with and things of that nature.
- 21:54But he made a good point where he said like, look, a Mountain
- 21:58Lion or a bear, they don't have 100% kill rate.
- 22:02Like, you know what? I'm like they jump on deer all
- 22:05the time that they don't kill. Like, you know, they farm a shot
- 22:09or hit him in the top of the back, which I'm not saying is
- 22:12what you want to do. I'm just saying it's an
- 22:14interesting point of view that like not all predators are
- 22:20perfect. Every time you want to get as
- 22:23close to 100 as possible, but it's not possible to be 100% / a
- 22:27long period of time. Eventually you're going to have
- 22:30something happen, a mechanical, a miss, a string jump, you name
- 22:34it, something will happen. Hit a twig, there's all sorts of
- 22:37things, wind. I just think it's interesting to
- 22:40think about it and, and that is why practicing with your bow
- 22:46year around is so important. And that's what the channels
- 22:52always been about is just shooting year round.
- 22:56I think that's the best way to get your percentage as close to
- 23:00100 as possible and, and, and, and shoot hard stuff.
- 23:04So that way when you get, you know, easier shots, they're even
- 23:07easier. That's kind of been my
- 23:09philosophy, you know. So your shot was it towards the
- 23:13edge of your limits? Yeah, I would say it was.
- 23:18And you know, you learn from that went, you know what?
- 23:20I've learned that that's a bit too much for me.
- 23:22That's fine. You got to at some point you got
- 23:25to, you know, learn what your threshold is.
- 23:29Yeah. Now what I did learn is that as
- 23:31you know, at the the speed that my bow is now in the poundage
- 23:35that I pull, you know, penetration is not a problem.
- 23:41It's just speed to allow my arrow to get there faster.
- 23:44So the more I can work towards and I'm like we've said a
- 23:48million times, my arms ain't going to grow any longer.
- 23:51Like, you know, that is what it is.
- 23:54I'm never going to be able to change that.
- 23:56So the only thing I can do is to continue to to grow, to move up
- 24:01the poundage and eventually an 80 yard shot would not be a
- 24:05problem to where, you know, my bow is fast enough that I don't
- 24:11have to worry about the time it takes my arrow to get there and
- 24:13not animals movement now is there.
- 24:15I mean, likewise, we'll flip the switch and Ted who has a 30 1/2
- 24:20inch draw and you know, was pulling 60 lbs to be ready for
- 24:26his elk hunt after the deer hunt shot at a deer at 14 yards and
- 24:35playing that video back in slow motion, that thing even as close
- 24:40as 14 yards dropped that string or jumped it didn't really jump.
- 24:46I guess you could say he. It's still called.
- 24:48Jumping, But it's not really jumping because he dropped
- 24:51ducked the string faster than a bolt of lightning like it was
- 24:58crazy. I mean, his shot was was, you
- 25:01know, it was a pinwheel and by the time they got travelled 14
- 25:04yards, it was over the deer by a couple of inches, you know, and
- 25:09you could see it in the video that there.
- 25:11Was you could easily do one of those ones where you place when
- 25:13you see the arrow in frame and you where it's, you know,
- 25:17heading toward, you could place a dot and then watch that animal
- 25:23go below it. So like, it's not to say it
- 25:29can't happen even with a fast bow, you know?
- 25:32Like they are just faster. The animal is freaking fast for
- 25:39sure. I mean, but like I said, I mean
- 25:41not everything can be solved 100%.
- 25:45You can do certain things to. Try to mitigate the main the
- 25:48amount of times it can't happen. Right.
- 25:50The main thing to me with shooting distance, for me it
- 25:56always comes down to shooting skill.
- 25:57That really should determine your effective range.
- 26:00For me, the best way to just define your effective range is
- 26:04the paper plate test in my opinion.
- 26:07What range can you hit? Let's say 10 to 12 inch paper
- 26:12plate depending on the species 9 out of 10 times and then
- 26:16whatever yardage that number drops to 8 or 7 or 6.
- 26:20Then you shouldn't shoot that far hunting.
- 26:22I even think that's like a a nice fun video, you know, like,
- 26:27yeah, you know, especially because Morley has, you know,
- 26:31targets at every 10 yards. So like we could start at the 20
- 26:33yard mark and just do a challenge, like who's, you know,
- 26:37who's effective range. Yeah.
- 26:38That'd be fun. I would love to do it.
- 26:40It'd. Be funny to go out and do it
- 26:41with like a few people all at once.
- 26:44Just put like 4 plates up at once.
- 26:45Do a knockout challenge and see who has the furthest distance.
- 26:50But yeah, I mean, I also too, if you think about it, this is sort
- 26:57of the argument against Javieros is like, you know, usually if
- 27:01someone hits an animal poorly or misses, it's because the animal
- 27:04reacted prior to the arrow get in there, which a heavy arrows
- 27:08just going to make take it longer to get to the target.
- 27:11So really, if you think about it, if you can't, if we can't
- 27:14increase our draw lengths, which we can't unless this new Carter
- 27:19gets you another half inch, which is possible, but assuming
- 27:23that your draw length is fixed, which for the most part it is,
- 27:29the only way you're going to pick up speed is draw weight.
- 27:34Maybe System X strings have been said they gain somewhere between
- 27:382:00 to 5:00 feet a second sometimes.
- 27:42An arrow. Weight, arrow weight.
- 27:44That's it. So you're you could go lighter
- 27:47on your arrow. I see.
- 27:48And I think I went and to quote me on this, I'd have to watch
- 27:53the video where we did the penetration test, but I'm almost
- 27:55certain we went with an arrow weight that was around 375.
- 28:00Now I think, I don't say, I think I feel I would only be
- 28:07comfortable dropping that to about 3:50 and which is, you
- 28:16know, I'm only saving. 25 grains.
- 28:20I would. Be switching from a 125 tip.
- 28:23To 100 tip, so you don't have to change anything and you know the
- 28:27arrow per SE. Now I think that would be fine.
- 28:36Obviously that affects your penetration a little bit, but I
- 28:41would be interested again, another video, a comparison
- 28:45video. It's a bit of an experimental
- 28:47video. If you just as simple as
- 28:49changing the tip that now someone did comment on this when
- 28:53we did the video with the Ballistics gel like that.
- 28:56That's not like, you know, similar to to animal or
- 29:00whatever. It doesn't matter.
- 29:02I'm not saying that the arrow has to pass through the
- 29:05ballistic gel for me to get a pass through on an animal.
- 29:08That's not what we're saying. The only reason you use the
- 29:11Ballistics gel is just to determine.
- 29:15Which one penetrates? The most, yeah, exactly.
- 29:18That's not saying, Kay, I got 8 inches of penetration on this
- 29:21Ballistics gel. So I'm only going to get 8
- 29:23inches of penetration on an animal. 8 inches.
- 29:26Yeah, is you get what I'm saying?
- 29:30So to clarify that like nobody's saying Ballistics gel is the
- 29:34same as animal, you know, density or whatever, internals
- 29:39and skin, yadda, yadda, yadda. But what you could do is just
- 29:44simply take the same exact arrow and shoot once they're
- 29:48Ballistics with the 125 and once they're the Ballistics with the
- 29:52100. So again, you can see the
- 29:54difference in penetration that you'll get there as well as you
- 30:00would have to shoot with a garment or something at like a
- 30:04couple different distances and test the speed difference with
- 30:12125 grain broadhead and 100 grain broadhead.
- 30:16Now you could just use 100 for the speed test.
- 30:19You could just use tips, 100 grain tip versus 125 grain tip.
- 30:24But that would be very interesting to see because if
- 30:27the idea is that we can pick up more speed by changing our arrow
- 30:31weight than one, let's see how much speed you truly gain.
- 30:37So if I were to take a 70 yard shot, what's the difference in
- 30:42the speed by reducing only 25 grains?
- 30:46How many seconds does it truly take to hit the bag, and what's
- 30:50the speed that the Garmin shows between the two?
- 30:54And then is it worth that speed based on the penetration loss
- 31:00that you'll have? That would be a quick, nice
- 31:03little test to do. Now, I think one other thought
- 31:08could be that, you know, maybe instead of maybe you say, OK,
- 31:14I'm not taking any shots past 40.
- 31:17And then you just try to improve hunting skills to get closer
- 31:21more often. That's another way to skin the
- 31:24cat. For sure, for sure.
- 31:27Now granted what I did in that, which is very evident in the
- 31:30video, I was not spot in stock per SE, you know?
- 31:34Like it wasn't necessarily Rd. hunting sure, but it wasn't like
- 31:422 hours of trying to get closer and closer and closer like I was
- 31:47in some wide open Pines and had to, you know, work with the
- 31:50environment I was provided that deer in.
- 31:57I do think I will. I'm going to toot my own horn
- 32:01here a little bit. I do think when it comes to spot
- 32:05and stalking, granted I am much smaller which offers less weight
- 32:13hitting the ground. I have smaller feet so they
- 32:16don't roll over as much stuff. My boots are not as heavy
- 32:20because they're you know, 4 size 5 sizes smaller than most men's
- 32:27foot size. So all of that one automatically
- 32:30makes me quieter. Now if you just have 0 balance
- 32:34then you could still be louder than a £200 man with size 12
- 32:39feet. Sure.
- 32:41But I do think I also have fairly good balance when it
- 32:43comes to being out there. You look like you're zoning out
- 32:47here. But ultimately, and I think
- 32:49you've agreed with this many of times, I am fairly good at
- 32:55closing the distance in a spot in stock.
- 32:58I stalked into about 15 yards. When was this?
- 33:04This summer when you stayed behind and filmed.
- 33:11Those two that spooked off. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:17Yeah, that was good. That was good.
- 33:18You had a good route. Yeah.
- 33:21That's what I'm saying like that's another option is just to
- 33:24get close. For sure, but the the the
- 33:26environment that was in front of me didn't allow for that there.
- 33:30That's the that's the case. Sometimes you can't.
- 33:32Always. Correct.
- 33:33Sometimes on a stock you can get all the way to 20 yards.
- 33:36Other times, the closest best you can do is 71.
- 33:39And you run out of cover like there's just nothing more you
- 33:41can do. Well, am I cooked or am I just
- 33:43going to back out? Am I going to try to shoot or am
- 33:46I going to back out? You know, you kind of reach that
- 33:48and that's where it's important to know your effective range.
- 33:51Yeah, well, and sometimes I think, you know, you'll have
- 33:55more luck by just choosing to back out.
- 34:01And I know that's a hard pill to swallow sometimes for people,
- 34:05it's a hard pill, funny to swallow.
- 34:07I've done it probably more times than almost anybody.
- 34:10I've had it. But the likelihood is if you
- 34:13don't spook them out of there, if the wind goes bad or, or you
- 34:16decide you're going to try to close distance when you have no
- 34:19cover. You know, you could come back
- 34:22the next day and glass that little hillside or, or, or
- 34:25finger or Ridge or whatever strip of mountain and most
- 34:30likely pick that same buck back up and try again the next
- 34:34morning or that next that afternoon or whatever.
- 34:37If you spook them out of there, I'm not saying they moved to the
- 34:42next county, but for sure you may not find them on that same
- 34:47set of ridges or whatever like you might.
- 34:50If you're lucky and you find them, you might pick them up two
- 34:53miles away. That's not, you know, impossible
- 34:58for a deer to do. So sometimes it's just wiser to
- 35:06back back out. Often times, yeah, I do that
- 35:10often. Almost probably more than
- 35:14anybody. Sure, I do it.
- 35:16Sure, sure. A wise one, yes, Yeah.
- 35:20But so anyways, moving on. Garrett also got one that
- 35:26morning. Yes.
- 35:28That was great, very exciting. You can watch that in the video.
- 35:32Our first time ever hunting with Garrett and got the job done has
- 35:37final morning with us, which was great.
- 35:41Yeah. Super exciting.
- 35:42That was kind of interesting because his buck was with
- 35:44another buck that we didn't know at the time and bull elk as
- 35:47well. So that was pretty interesting,
- 35:50yeah. And then there's Teddy and
- 35:54Steve. Yeah, and Cade.
- 35:57And Cade, yeah. None of them were able to get it
- 36:00done, but had some good opportunities.
- 36:03A lot. And you know, overall, I mean,
- 36:07it was, it was fun. I liked sort of having a a
- 36:12transforming camp. A rotating camp.
- 36:15Yeah, that was fun. I'm, you know, getting new
- 36:19people in. People would leave more new
- 36:21people. It was just kind of this
- 36:23rotating, you know, fun, happy loving bunch.
- 36:26And I I thought that was a really good time and I enjoyed
- 36:31it immensely. Yeah, I would love to do.
- 36:34We've talked about this too, like kind of like back in your
- 36:37day when you're a little taught and you know, all the, the old
- 36:42timers had hunt camp and whatnot, something like that.
- 36:47Where like right now, sometimes we do have quite a few people in
- 36:52our January hunt with us or rotating in and out or that we
- 36:56meet up with or that come out, you know, over the span of the
- 36:59couple weeks we're out there. But it always ends up being and
- 37:05maybe it's because you know, at the time you have the, the side
- 37:10by side, the more you know, versatile rig or whatever the
- 37:16case may be that like it always seems to be a a a tough point to
- 37:21figure out the day's plan. If I were to have a dream hunt,
- 37:26it would kind of be very similar to your Badlands, Oklahoma hunt
- 37:33where like there's just a hunt camp and everybody's got their
- 37:36own vehicles and their own kind of people that they come out
- 37:39with and everybody just disperses for the day.
- 37:43And then you come back and, you know, camp life has dinner, you
- 37:49know, made for everybody and and you tell stories.
- 37:53No it's not. No and and.
- 38:00You could be the camp, the camp, the camp lady.
- 38:04Maybe after I filled my tag. Yeah, I've.
- 38:08Done it before. Yeah, but anyways, you know,
- 38:13everybody comes back and has dinner and roast weenies and and
- 38:18so I love roast. And weenies.
- 38:20Yeah, and and tell their stories and then you go back out.
- 38:24Everybody goes out. You could shuffle people if you
- 38:26want or, you know, based on who's got tags and film and hunt
- 38:33and there's no pressure to who has to be with who and, you
- 38:37know, wants to be in the rig. And that would just be fun.
- 38:42That would be fun. I it's kind of like leisure
- 38:44hunting because you got a vacation camp essentially set
- 38:48up, but it's not leisure hunting because you're still, you know,
- 38:52out there working hard every day.
- 38:55That would be, that would be like a nice Little Dream
- 38:59vacation hunt set up. Albie, hello.
- 39:05He's so precious. What topic would you like to
- 39:08cover next? Well, I'll, we could leave the
- 39:16elk hunt for another, another pod.
- 39:19We've got lots to catch up on here.
- 39:22You don't need that, but you kind of have, like you explained
- 39:27in the beginning, a break. I've got about 2:00-ish weeks or
- 39:31so, 2 1/2 and then I'll head out to state I've never been to
- 39:35before, unfortunately. We really should have planned it
- 39:38better knowing that you didn't have anything going on.
- 39:40We could have kind of done a little week trip or something
- 39:42I'm. OK.
- 39:43Yeah, yeah, nice little break, but I'm headed to South Dakota
- 39:48to do some pheasant hunting for five days again.
- 39:53I feel like that's a really long time to shoot at birds and walk
- 39:55around in fields, but I don't know.
- 39:57I'm not a bird hunter so it'll be fun to do nonetheless.
- 40:02And and then from there, drive 24 hours back from South Dakota
- 40:08to New Jersey. Yeah, the whole driving thing.
- 40:11So I went over this last night. I did a live with Botox Mr.
- 40:16Scotty on TikTok and what I realized.
- 40:20Give me my release, Mr. Guys in the comments agreed with me, but
- 40:25what I realized is folks that live a little bit more rural
- 40:33don't like to fly like hunters have this fear of flying.
- 40:36I've realized because it's more common than not where like
- 40:42people, someone will go what? Let me just paint a picture.
- 40:44They'll live in Georgia and they'll go, Oh yeah, I'm going
- 40:49to go on this hunt in, in South in Wisconsin.
- 40:55And I go, OK, cool. What you know what time's the
- 40:58flight at? And they'll go, Oh, no, I'm, I'm
- 41:00driving. And it's like, well, how far is
- 41:03that? They're like 30-4 hours.
- 41:05And I'm like. But when you think about it, for
- 41:07a hunting guy. Specifically then a guy in the
- 41:09comments said, yeah, US Midwest folk, you know, we don't fly
- 41:13baby. They just and and then a guy
- 41:15said it's because the rental, the rental car is a big hang up
- 41:19and I agree with that. Well, not just the rental car,
- 41:22but, you know, say you're going out now.
- 41:24Wisconsin was maybe a bad idea because like or example, maybe
- 41:32not. But like if, if you're going
- 41:34somewhere where you may be hiking and saddle hunting.
- 41:39And so like now, not only do you have a, a boat to fly, but all
- 41:46of your saddle equipment, your, your climbing sticks, your say
- 41:53you've got trekking poles, your ginormous backpack that
- 41:57everybody carries around when for some reason Western hunting
- 42:03and you got to fly all of that plus your clothes, plus if
- 42:07you've got like scent control stuff.
- 42:09And just, I mean, think about how much stuff was in the back
- 42:13of our car to go 15 hours now flying, you know, maybe not all
- 42:24the camping stuff like the tubs with all the hunting stuff and
- 42:27whatnot, flying, all of that and then needing to get a rental
- 42:31truck and get the insurance on the rental truck because think
- 42:34about how much mud we put on the side by side.
- 42:36Yeah, but if we're talking about.
- 42:37So let's talk about the South Dakota hunt because it's
- 42:39actually coming up, but it's a bird hunt, you know what I'm
- 42:43saying? What do you need, like 2 guns, 3
- 42:46guns, you know what I'm saying? You just toss them in ATSA case.
- 42:50Yeah, you fly down with your clothes for your five days and
- 42:57you rent a car that you split between three people.
- 43:03Dude I'm pretty sure that would cost less than for again,
- 43:06driving 30 hours. Yeah, well, anyways, I'm flying
- 43:10into Sioux Falls and they're just going to pick me up for the
- 43:13last three hours. But then you.
- 43:14But unfortunately I do 20. 4 hours.
- 43:17Yeah, yeah. Slap my ass and call me Sally.
- 43:20There ain't no way. Hopefully I can sleep for like.
- 43:24No way I'm doing 24 hours. Yeah, but.
- 43:28And I know you're not going to do tasks like sometimes you say
- 43:31you'll do them on the road. You're going to be just playing
- 43:33games for 20 hours straight. Yeah, but anyways, so 24 hours
- 43:38drive back to New Jersey and then people can't remember.
- 43:42People need to fly more. Guys, if you're watching this
- 43:44and you're scared of planes, you'll be all right.
- 43:48Just take the take the trip. I'm scared of playing.
- 43:51I take a lot of flights take. The trip?
- 43:54Yeah, do it now. Fly.
- 43:56I can't remember if we're hunting whitetail for two or
- 44:00three days, but I get pictures pretty much on the daily from
- 44:04the the stand that I'm going to be sitting at and I'm quite
- 44:08happy with any of them that are coming in.
- 44:10So I'll sit there all day. I don't care.
- 44:15And then hopefully be able to get some of it, you know,
- 44:19shipped in like some dry ice or whatever back so we can have
- 44:22some whitetail meat here at the house and whitetail.
- 44:27So that's two more hunts for the year for me.
- 44:30Then my film project that we won't, you know, won't tell
- 44:33people what it is, but my film project, my local film project,
- 44:37Yeah, yeah. Which, you know, maybe big
- 44:39poppy, maybe it'll be. Maybe it'll be.
- 44:41Well, you're not really the scheduler, so unless you get on
- 44:44like scheduling and picking out where you'd like to to do this,
- 44:47it ain't going to happen before I leave.
- 44:49So you better No, it'll be. Get on, it'll be after you get
- 44:52back things better later anyways.
- 44:55What? Yeah, it'll be after and I have
- 44:56no problem shooting a doe. So, you know, we'll just try to
- 45:00do something cool. And then I think, while to be
- 45:03fair, I think I might be going to Tennessee to whack.
- 45:05Some do, some do patrol. Oh yeah, When is that
- 45:08potentially happening? November rut time.
- 45:12Very nice. Yeah.
- 45:13So I'll get a little break too. Yeah.
- 45:16And then I might, I might hit downtown Nashville, possibly.
- 45:19Yeah, you never been there. No, I haven't.
- 45:21Don't worry, I'll be very well behaved.
- 45:23Oh yeah, Alby, maybe just you and I when he gets back.
- 45:31Yeah. So lots of still some hunting
- 45:35coming up for us until till January when?
- 45:38I think he needs to go out so you know after this.
- 45:41I have to wrap up. Yeah.
- 45:44But yeah, anyway, a lot of stuff coming up.
- 45:46This pod was a little bit of a smorgasbord, but super fun.
