- 6:57[SPEAKER_09]: Now, where did you end up?
- 6:58[SPEAKER_09]: Why, Jen, up in Washington?
- 7:00[SPEAKER_05]: I've been kind of parapotetic.

- 7:12[SPEAKER_05]: because my wife, who's Greek, has relatives there.

- 7:20[SPEAKER_05]: So you're going to want to drive?
- 7:22[SPEAKER_05]: I did go to Watertown High, it was, you know, spent the formative years of my life here in Watertown.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_05]: So I consider myself a native son.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_05]: So you remember the waiting pool in the park?
- 7:33[SPEAKER_05]: I sure do.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_09]: The driver's slipping fall in it.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_09]: Like everyone else.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_09]: I'm sure I did.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_09]: And what, what did you get out of your mind?
- 7:42[SPEAKER_09]: Seventy-five.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_09]: Seventy-five.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_09]: So we're all in that same era.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_09]: And wow, that was interesting.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_09]: How old are you when you left?
- 7:53[SPEAKER_05]: Um, you know, I think I went away to college.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_05]: I went away to school and that was sort of the beginning.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_05]: I believe.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_05]: No, no.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_05]: I went to St.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_05]: Lawrence University.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_05]: So I'll stage right in the region.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_05]: And then I went to a big public Midwestern university for graduate work in Indiana.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_09]: You know, the anchor on Fox News, and you have to be doing Martha McAllam, you know, her, I don't know if you know her.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_05]: I know the name, yeah.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_09]: She went to that fund, St.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_09]: Lawrence.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_09]: She used to eat at the Tik Tok.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, no kidding, yeah.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_05]: You're probably there too.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_05]: I sure do, yeah.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_09]: Well, she was talking about her on this.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_09]: Wow, that's something.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_09]: And we've also got Larry Gordon here.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_09]: Larry, let's check this mic out.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_09]: Give it a try.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_09]: Hello.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, sounds great.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_09]: But pull a little bit closer to you.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_09]: Good.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_09]: So talk right into it.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_09]: Just as close as I am here.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_09]: Larry Gordon now is that should that name be familiar to water town residents.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_11]: I hope so my family was in business down on court street for almost eighty years.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_09]: Okay Gordon's furniture.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_09]: Who's your dad then?
- 8:54[SPEAKER_11]: My dad was at Gordon.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_11]: or I thought it was Julius of course.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_09]: Julius?
- 8:58[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, it's kind of a fixture.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, the old days of a business community have kind of faded.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_09]: You know, they used to be that whole group of people.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_11]: That's kind of fun.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_11]: I come home and go to the crystal and there's this Marianne who's been working there for, for over, like, sixty years or whatever.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_11]: It's my family.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_09]: Well, there he is.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yes, true.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_09]: Now, they stocked her guitars in there now.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_09]: And then the building that burned was that part of it.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_11]: That was Max Albert.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_11]: Well, thanks for that was Jason.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_11]: It wasn't the same building.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_09]: Well, a lot of memory, a lot of furniture sold out of there.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_09]: Now, why didn't you get in the furniture business?
- 9:35[SPEAKER_11]: Well, I was supposed to, uh, when I was twenty-three, I was curious.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_11]: I've never been less of a buffalo and I got, uh, I did my friend go out to Silicon Valley.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_11]: Check that out.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_11]: Well, my plan was to stay for two years and I'm still there.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_09]: Now, you became you didn't invent the internet, but you became a big deal in technology out there.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, you had a company called Jupiter Research and you know, actually that before I was Jupiter Research, I started the first internet solving firm in Silicon Valley called the internet research.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_09]: And that's back when nobody knew what the heck the internet wants.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_11]: And we were trying to push the internet before browsers and got kicked out of some of the best boardrooms.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_11]: And so it could be all right.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_09]: Now what I hate to ask when did members of the internet wanted it become into being?
- 10:24[SPEAKER_11]: Yo is about nineteen ninety-five that netscape came on the same of the first browser.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_11]: And then about six months later, Microsoft invented the internet explorer.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_11]: And once there were browsers, and then there were Yahoo,
- 10:38[SPEAKER_11]: And there was two goals and you could start to find your way around.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_11]: And things to go.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_09]: Now, they're just continuing the old kind of internet to made all the noises.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_11]: That's AOL.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_09]: That's going.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_11]: It was very slow.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_11]: It was primitive.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_09]: Right.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_09]: Now, everybody pretty much in this area uses probably spectrum.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_09]: And there's other services too.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_11]: Most people have Wi-Fi.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_11]: You go to a hotel or you go right anywhere and there's free Wi-Fi.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_09]: Wi-Fi everywhere right here.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_09]: There's Wi-Fi as we speak.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_09]: Well, that's great.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, and then you came while you're back here now.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_09]: You have family out there about here.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_11]: I used to have a lot of family in this town no longer.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_11]: But I have, I really love this community and I have a
- 11:30[SPEAKER_11]: I feel like a salmon returning to their screen.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_09]: Well, of course, it looks great.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_09]: They kind of redid it, but that horrible fountain they put it.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_09]: Did you see that?
- 11:38[SPEAKER_09]: Have you seen it?
- 11:38[SPEAKER_09]: No, I have.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_09]: right on what's called locking our plaza.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_09]: They had that fountain that looked like a big gear.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_09]: It's kind of neat.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_09]: And then they took that out when they we did this street scape thing.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_09]: And then what they got in there now looks like you bought it at state street hardware.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_09]: Don't you know, Pat Hickie.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_09]: He knows what I'm talking about.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_09]: So make sure they see that on the way.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_09]: Well, we've got Tom Walker and Larry Gordon here.

- 16:25[SPEAKER_09]: Now, obviously it's different.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_09]: What was it like back in whenever when you were kid?
- 16:32[SPEAKER_11]: Down town was a bustling, vibrant, active place at the hundreds, maybe even sometimes thousands of people were down there.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, I remember seeing the pictures during Christmas shopping season was incredible.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_11]: During the holiday season, how do you might build a pull out of pictures from the park?
- 16:51[SPEAKER_09]: And feel free to chime in, Tom.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_09]: You're the son of the mayor.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_09]: You know everything.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_11]: downtown was a place that you wanted to be.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_11]: And there was a lot to do there.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_11]: And I like to call it the community living room.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_09]: To do a new Barry's Pet Shop store.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_09]: How about the Fanny Farmers store?
- 17:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, the little.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, you threw the bottle.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_11]: There were a lot of the tunnel that went from the.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, the Woodruff to the train station.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, and this is a picture John gave me an important.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_09]: We can't show it on radio, but it's from front of the hotel Woodruff.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_09]: was that VE day or something like that.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_05]: We don't really know that there's like it's a crowd of a hundred people in their all and more than that.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_09]: It's incredible a number of people, one of them's even wearing a white socks jersey.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_09]: It must be a friend of the Pope there.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, just to give you a sense for, you know, the enormity of it.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_05]: People that would, you know, spend time downtown is a hub, right?
- 17:53[SPEAKER_05]: And, you know, that has changed.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_05]: That changed as I was growing up.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_05]: So I think Larry and I had some important to think of this as a very different baseline of what water town was as a downtown as an urban center and what it is, you know, what it became over the years.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_09]: Well, there's been a ton of money thrown into it.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_09]: You were there for urban renewal.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, you remember the tour down the buildings, then they put up some buildings.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_09]: And over the decades since the, you know, well, with buildings been redone, you've got a lot of other things.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, a lot of good things have happened, I guess.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_11]: But you know, it's a wound that the city still hasn't recovered from.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_09]: Urban renewal.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_11]: And I mean, we got the demolition, but we didn't really
- 18:36[SPEAKER_09]: I remember they built one, the Woolworth built a store.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_09]: And that was supposed to be like a mall.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_09]: Like it had a little mall downstairs.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_09]: I had escalators.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, for a time it was.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_09]: Got to get right up to that micro area.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_09]: OK.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_09]: And well, that's great.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, it was, and you remember the Woodruff Gogo room you said.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_11]: I was a child driving around the square.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_11]: And you could see the, of course, this is a child that was pretty passive.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, I know somebody who's still around today who used to dance there and it was a part of the downtown and everything like that all the restaurants and it was the families not just through the gardens and all the other families at own visit Rothschild and Lava and all these names.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_11]: You know there are a lot of locally owned businesses there that have a lot of businesses in our corporate home.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_11]: There are franchises or chains.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_09]: And all communities of, we used to have ethnic communities.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_09]: I remember the synagogue used to be really busy.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_09]: I assume you're still Jewish or okay, good, good.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_09]: But they don't, you know, activity there is a fraction of what it used to be.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_09]: It's unfortunate.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_09]: And just, you know, everything in general is like that.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_09]: And the old institutions are gone.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_09]: But you're going to talk about the black river, right?
- 19:51[SPEAKER_05]: We are, yes, just for a little history, a little context here.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_05]: Larry, nice, you know, our high school classmates next to him, you're ahead of him.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_05]: But we got together just five years ago out of curiosity and started talking about our fondness for water town.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_05]: And we had both seen or come across a, a, a, a, a, a, a plan for the development and revitalization of schools island.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_05]: And we started thinking about, you know, how great our experience was in water town.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_05]: And wanting to sort of relive some of that and maybe sort of think through some of the things that we missed, the possibilities that we're here that we really didn't get to take advantage of.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_05]: And one was the Black River.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, we were told and taught to avoid it.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_05]: It was a place of danger, right?
- 20:45[SPEAKER_05]: And if you go down there now, in fact, I'd like to invite your listeners just as you did, you know, for them to go out and take a look at, like an hour's square, just to drive down to that area and see what you can see of the river and the island.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_09]: It is beautiful, but you know, there's still disagreement.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_09]: There's been some things that have been spruest up.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_09]: There's no doubt about it.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_09]: But if you go down like Newell Street, what's used to be a two-way street is what we call.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_09]: And then they made it into, it's not a street anymore, right?
- 21:14[SPEAKER_09]: It's a walkway, but nobody uses it in their free to go down there.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_09]: And the city council just will not budge on turning it back into a street because they're captives of the planning class.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_09]: Now the planners, you know, urban planners.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_09]: And they just like tell you, you got to do this like on the court street where your store was, they have these back in parking places now.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_09]: Nobody uses them.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_09]: But you know, you can't tell the planning department that because
- 21:40[SPEAKER_09]: They're in love with it.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, they just think it's great, even though nobody parks there.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_09]: And that's the frustrating part.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_09]: And I think it's gotten worse in the past few years.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_09]: And I like these people personally, but, you know, it's just got to be crazy.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_09]: how they just want to do things a certain way regardless of whether it makes sense.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I mean, the planning is important.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_05]: No, I agree.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_05]: But we agree on that.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_05]: And the document that we were talking about the twenty twenty revitalization plan was really excellent in many ways.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_05]: And it's surprising to us that there wasn't much movement forward on that.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_05]: And there were also some things that
- 22:20[SPEAKER_05]: We're part of, we're missing from that, you know, some, some things about the sort of recreational potential of the river, the cultural heritage, the industrial heritage of Suels Island, which is like ready to do something with.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_05]: And that resulted in, you know, us getting involved in as, on the advisory council of the, the LWRP, which is the logo.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_09]: We got a call coming in so we got to take the call Larry her Tom can you put the headphones on?
- 22:53[SPEAKER_09]: And can you hear everything in him?
- 22:55[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, here you go.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_09]: All right, we'll have to roll you the question.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_09]: Do you learn anything?
- 22:59[SPEAKER_09]: Good afternoon you're on the show.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm calling to tell you about our chicken and just get dinner tonight at the stream.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_04]: I'll be a member of the shirt.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_09]: Okay, three mile Bay Methodist Church, chicken dinner tonight.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_09]: strawberry shirt cake a special blueberry dessert oh wow and chocolate delight okay well I'm sure it's a delight and I'm sure the chicken dinner is good too and I went that start three o'clock or now it's outside the street at three and it's drive through right yeah it still drives you and until we run out of food which we did last month wow you're gonna get there early
- 23:44[SPEAKER_09]: All right, three mile bait method is church three o'clock.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_09]: Thank you.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_09]: All right, I know.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_09]: All right, got another call.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_09]: But if you're doing it around the air.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_16]: Yeah, hi, Jeff.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_16]: Oh, this question is more directed towards Mr. Walker with his father being a mayor of water town.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_16]: And I did get to meet him once at a council meeting.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_16]: So that was pretty cool.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_16]: I got to talk to him for a good twenty, thirty minutes, one time in the lobby.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_16]: And he showed a lot of cool stories.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_16]: with about water town in.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_16]: What I want to know is you guys are reminiscing the whole great water town was, you know, back in the day.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_16]: I mean, what do you think of it now with the city starting with Mayor Butler, raising the up should be queue flag, and all this over.
- 24:28[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_16]: Okay.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_09]: We're not going to get deep into that, but I appreciate it to just your question.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_09]: Thanks a lot.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_09]: Well, I guess he's asking for comparisons now and then obviously society's changed.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_09]: But in general, are we better off or worse off than we were?
- 24:45[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I'm not sure that I'm the one to answer that.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_05]: We like to think that there's still great potential here.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_05]: There's a lot of great.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, just the fact that someone called in with a chicken dinner, yeah.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_05]: Chicken dinner, I mean, that those are still part of the culture and activities that go on in Watertown.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_05]: I think are great.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_05]: There are many amenities to, you know, living some of these blocks parties, three or three of summer.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_09]: And they've been pretty successful.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_09]: I thought down downtown closing off half the square.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_09]: They have one more coming up.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_09]: I think next week.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_09]: Two or one.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_09]: One.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_09]: I think is one more before Labor Day.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_09]: But things like that.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_09]: But you're never going to see a situation like it was on VE Day downtown or something like that area.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, I could see that as possible.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, I think that maybe the planning department can tell us a little bit more about what, you know, what the downtown could be here because now we have a lot of competition from, you know, the malls that came to the city and the sprawl that you continue to see growing out.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_05]: But the Marshall Street.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_09]: The mall is just about dead now.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_05]: Well, that was one phase, right?
- 25:58[SPEAKER_05]: So that, I think, took attention away from, you know, the downtown, whether it comes back the way it was or in some different form is still a question.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_05]: But I guess what my point is, if you take a drive down there,
- 26:13[SPEAKER_05]: And sort of look past the clutter that maybe you see a little bit along the river or the brush that hides the river.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_05]: This is a magnificent resource to, you know, to I think that potentially enhance, you know, some downtown urban, you know, vitality.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_09]: I live a hundred yards or maybe a little more from Suels Island.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_09]: And I've watched that for years and nothing ever happens.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_09]: When I was in office, I said, can we take that fence down?
- 26:45[SPEAKER_09]: It looks horrible?
- 26:46[SPEAKER_09]: Well, we can't do that.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_09]: And they talk about LWRPs and they talk about this and that and the other thing and nothing happens.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_05]: That's our question too.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_05]: One of the big obstacles.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_09]: I thought it was me, but it doesn't happen under anybody else either.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_11]: One of the big obstacles is that.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_11]: all of us who grew up in Watertown were trained from the Earth earliest childhood to fear the river.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_11]: And you know, fear precludes enjoyment.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_09]: And there was that era when they talked a lot about kayaking and this and that and there was a little, you know, increase in interest then.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_09]: And I guess people still use it for that, but it never really caught on as an engine of growth.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_11]: Well, that's something we're excited about advocating for because one of the things we're considering is that the city faces this twenty-third year revenue cliff where the right where the hydropower revenue is going to drop off precipitously.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_11]: The committee needs to either replace that or dramatically come back services.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_11]: And we see the potential for a recreation account.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_09]: You should run for city council because I don't hear any of those people talking that way.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, it's true.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_11]: There's a lot of wrong ways to do things.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_09]: If without planning the chances are that you're going to do it in a way that
- 28:26[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, well when you look at that fountain when Pat shows it to you later and then you find out that they got a sixteen thousand dollar change order involved in it now because there's something that doesn't work right and it literally looks like something by at state street hardware like for your lawn of sprinkler zone and it's just terrible and we had a nice bit of sculpture in there which could have been redone but I don't know it's just like these decisions are made
- 28:52[SPEAKER_09]: in a vacuum, and I don't see much in the community involvement.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_11]: The essence of planet, there's a whole science that I'm just reading about right now, to a place making, and creating a place is like a recipe.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_09]: And the veterans might like to get one of those planners here in the studio.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_11]: But the, you know, the veterans memorial walkway, it's like unfinished.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_11]: There's, you know, there's no attraction.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_11]: There's no place to get coffee or beer or beer.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_09]: People are, there's somebody I killed there last year.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, and that's, you know, it's an unfinished project.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_09]: And nobody ever talked about that.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_09]: Was it a murder?
- 29:27[SPEAKER_09]: Why?
- 29:28[SPEAKER_09]: I guess it was a murder.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_09]: I don't even know if anybody got arrested, but they never talked about it.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_09]: And the place you can't see the river from there, because there's so much brush.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, it does grow.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_09]: And there's no traffic down there.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_09]: It's scary.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_09]: I would not recommend anyone walk down there after dark.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_11]: You know, our real goal is to simply, it's hard to imagine the river as a beautiful, safe, attractive, desirable place, but it could be bright.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_11]: And if all we accomplished today is to get people to drive down, you know, factory street, cross, share, violin, and just imagine if I could see through the
- 30:11[SPEAKER_11]: Overgrowth of the lapidate building was a fan of the homeless in Camus.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_11]: It has the potential to be a jewel.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_09]: Have you ever seen anything like that, probably in California, you have homeless?
- 30:24[SPEAKER_11]: Well, you know, when you look at something, you can tell in two seconds whether anybody cares about.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_11]: You look at the park, you go to the park, it's obvious that the community cares.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_11]: You go down there, it's equally obvious that nobody cares.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_11]: down around the factory.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_11]: So what's that?
- 30:40[SPEAKER_11]: In fact, we're a district.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, I know.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_11]: You see syringe syringes and broken beer bottles of all kinds of stuff.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_09]: We don't contribute to the beer bottle.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_09]: We clean ours up.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_09]: So anyway, we got a call here.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_09]: Good afternoon, you're on the air.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_09]: Go ahead.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_17]: How you doing?
- 30:57[SPEAKER_09]: What's up?
- 30:58[SPEAKER_17]: I had a couple questions for Mr. Walker.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_09]: Mm-hmm.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_17]: I was wondering, do you remember the duck pond up on floral drives?
- 31:07[SPEAKER_17]: that got on and now for a drive outside the city on yeah yeah yeah walkers show a park did you grow up in the park out that way different walker different different different family yeah different family yeah but I never knew that yeah we started with the same family so that's good to know actually I was wondering how they felt about the the staple of the salmon run ball right now that was my questions for mr. Walker okay well we'll ask them about that all right thanks um...
- 31:37[SPEAKER_09]: You know what can you say?
- 31:39[SPEAKER_09]: It's a mall and it's going out.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I mean, I have not been out there, but I know that it played an important role initially.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, the lifespan of a mall is really about twenty years and maybe the community decided that, you know, after the extent that there wasn't really a market there to continue.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_05]: But you do see, you know, the continuing sprawl, I guess I would call it sprawl, where there's kind of unplanned development that just spreads out our small street.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_05]: And I think that's something in my view that, you know, that we should have better control over it.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, it's not in the city, so you have no really control and the talents are just
- 32:25[SPEAKER_09]: they don't they have no real government per se right so you know you get anything goes but uh... you know the mall i i remember is a kid we've been Rochester for a bit of when i was young and that was when midtown plaza open i don't know if you're familiar with that but that was a gorgeous first covered indoor mall in the country at this fancy clock in there it's siblings department store macruities all these trains local chains
- 32:49[SPEAKER_09]: It's all gone now.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_09]: I don't even know if the buildings there anymore.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_09]: Same thing here, this thing is kind of a, with the exception of a destination store, like if you went to Best Buy to get a TV or something, I would do that, but I'm not going to go in the mall and walk around anymore.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_09]: I don't walk too well, but I wouldn't anyway.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and I know that malls have been, you know, popular destinations for people just to get out and walk and just exercise and socialize, right?
- 33:18[SPEAKER_05]: Whether you're shopping or not.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_05]: But if you think about, you know, one of the sort of mall developers, the big one that comes to mind is the Ross Corporation, look what they've done in cities like Baltimore and New York City, where
- 33:32[SPEAKER_05]: They've transformed riverfronts, industrial, and former industrial sites and converted them into places of parks and places that people can really enjoy.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_05]: Where it's cleaned up, it's accessible, and gets people in nature.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_05]: And, you know, it takes advantage really of sort of the natural resources of the community.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_05]: And I can see that, you know, see that happening here on the scale that's, you know, suitable for, you know, water town in the black river.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_05]: as Larry said and you know we try and promote this downtown could be the most beautiful part of the city in a real jam you know to compliment what we're seeing in Thompson Park.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_09]: Well Thompson Park does look nice and there's a lot of nuances up there there's debate over the Sue there's debate over
- 34:36[SPEAKER_09]: And there's all sorts of things up there.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_09]: But, you know, one thing I noticed when I drive through in recent years what has been done is all of that stone work is in good shape fixed up.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_09]: And they've cut out a lot of the
- 34:52[SPEAKER_09]: extra foliage in the, uh, so you can see things now.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_09]: And in that sense, it's better.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_09]: Of course, there's the, uh, the gazebo, the roof was put on.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_09]: It's named after your dad, which I'm sure you're proud of.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_09]: And then you've got the new pool and the splash pads, so there's some really good things there.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_09]: Um, but there's some fiscal challenges there too, and it all relates back to the city's going to go broken five years.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I think, you know, one of the things we're talking about with the river and, you know, rafting whitewater rafting there is to think of it not as just recreation, but this is a potential recreation economy that can be built around this.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_05]: We've talked to the mayor.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_05]: We've talked to other people about, you know, the potential of the black river to support a competitive, you know, Olympic class, you know, whitewater training camp training grounds.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, people don't know this, but we went through the qualifications.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_09]: Right, I remember that.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_11]: You know, they'd qualify as an Olympic competitive venue.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_09]: But you've got to have, because that's a specific endeavor there.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_09]: And you've got to have the people who are in that whole culture and sport and everything.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_09]: You're not going to get that by
- 36:07[SPEAKER_09]: a councilman or a planner, or a chamber of commerce, they are going to be able to put together that whole culture, I guess.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_09]: And that really is what fellow parts some years ago, when they were talking about.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_11]: And they were exactly right.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_11]: But they could block it.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_11]: You can block it, make it create friction and resist.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_11]: And they can also make it, they can also facilitate it.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_11]: And it's like the communities got to want it because.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_09]: Right.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_11]: issues we face and we're kind of mystified because we see a lot of potential to, you know, the, our communities blessed with this and around that river, those through our community, not every community's got a river like that.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_11]: And it's unique and that it runs your around.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_11]: And people, you know, there's nothing like it in the Northeast.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_11]: It's the best white water in the Northeast.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_11]: And people will drive eight hours.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_09]: From your purchase in the nation's capital and in California, I'm sure you follow events in water town.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_09]: And because you're interested people and you follow the governing and what's going on and the changing demographics and everything.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_09]: What do you think of it all from the looking at it from a thousand miles away or two thousand miles away?
- 37:28[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I mean, that's a challenge.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_05]: It's really hard not to be present and to make it a daily part of our reality.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_05]: So we've tried to bring people into our organization, which we call the Watertown Islands project, which gives our partnership, which gives us some sort of sense of sort of
- 37:52[SPEAKER_05]: We have regional, you know, we have islands too.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_05]: We have the same potential draw as a destination that the St.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_05]: Lawrence River does, right?
- 38:03[SPEAKER_05]: And there's only, I guess, to get back to your question, there's only so much we can do as I was living outside of the city.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_05]: So we depend upon members of our
- 38:14[SPEAKER_05]: Sure.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_05]: Who are local to help us understand what's happening with, you know, the rules on it's not the same as Catalina island.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, it's just, no, no, no.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_09]: It's a little different there.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_05]: But, yeah, we'll say, I mean, you look at some aerial views of it.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_05]: It's really impressive.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_09]: Oh, it is very impressive.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_09]: So what's your view from California?
- 38:35[SPEAKER_09]: My place of birth, what's the view from out there?
- 38:40[SPEAKER_11]: You know, there's so much potential for this river, and it's an underdeveloped asset.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_11]: And historically, the hydropower people have made the rules.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_11]: And there's good reasons for that, because everyone's concerned about liability.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_11]: Sure, around the river.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_11]: And everybody's concerned about safety.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_11]: And one of the things that we're advocating for is increasing access to the river.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_11]: And as part of that one of the things we think is if if this is truly a river community like I remember when I was a Sherman school we we all got bicycle safety training right I don't know if it was second or third grade or so now they all got e-bike but this is a river community.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_11]: It's like every child should have river safety
- 39:29[SPEAKER_11]: Right.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_11]: You know, with a with a, you know, first responder comes in and you know, take some down to Sioux Falls Island and he puts out a lead suit and I said to a tether and jumps in the river and all the kids see what happened.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_09]: It's a good idea.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_09]: Good idea.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_09]: Hey, listen, we got to do a break gentlemen and we'll be back with more in just a moment.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_14]: around the corner, around the continent, around the clock.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_14]: This is the news in talk authority.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_14]: AM-Twelve-Forty.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_19]: W-A-T-N.

- 42:47[SPEAKER_19]: Don't delay, though.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_19]: Call now to set up your free estimate.

- 42:59[SPEAKER_14]: We'll bring you the latest in just minutes at the top of the hour on AM twelve forty w a t n.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_09]: We're back here and we've got Tom Walker and Larry Gordon, uh, folks from Watertown, uh, actually a classmate of sorts that we were in the same era there at Watertown High School.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_09]: Mr. Gordon's family owned Gordon's furniture on court street and, of course, Tom Walker is the son of the legendary and immensely popular Mayor Tom Walker who served from nineteen eighty four to nineteen ninety two.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_09]: But one right in there.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_09]: I remember when he was first elected, he ran against Emerson Locklin.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_09]: It was kind of a blowout.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_09]: The second time he ran against John Kennedy.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_09]: And that was a close race.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_09]: Did you follow it from wherever you were?
- 43:42[SPEAKER_05]: I did.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_05]: To some degree.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, it was intense.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_05]: I talked to my dad and he would talk about it.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_05]: But he won by a narrow margin.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I don't remember.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_05]: I voted for him.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_05]: You know, everybody says that fire department, right?
- 43:53[SPEAKER_09]: Fire department.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, John.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_09]: God bless his soul now, but he was advocating for the fire department.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_09]: Your dad, on the go from five fire stations to four, or whatever the controversy was at the time, and man, that whole election just swung on that issue and your dad won.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_09]: Which I think was a good thing.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_09]: Not that I don't like John Kennedy.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_09]: I really liked him too, but the issue was, and the issues are the same today.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_09]: There was a big fight a few years ago when Jeff Smith was mayor and Joe Butler Jr.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_09]: and they were fighting with a fire department then.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_09]: So those fights, some things never changed, but you don't cover me.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_09]: So such an impediment, you talk about, out in California, the fires down in Pacific Palisades and all those areas, beautiful neighborhoods, flattened, incredible.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_09]: There still hasn't been a house built.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_09]: People couldn't even get permission to push away the demolition.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_09]: Because of Mayor Bass, the bureaucracy, whatever it is.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_09]: So I'm not going to ask you to comment on Gavin Newsom, because I'm sure our viewers listeners have their opinions on him, but it's bad all over, isn't it?
- 45:02[SPEAKER_09]: As far as government being an impediment of doing anything.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_09]: Am I wrong?
- 45:08[SPEAKER_09]: Or am I just a right wing magma fool or something?
- 45:13[SPEAKER_05]: No, I mean, I think you're right.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_05]: And it's really a citizen's responsibility to challenge in question.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_09]: What about DC?
- 45:21[SPEAKER_09]: I don't know.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_09]: Is there a crime wave there?
- 45:23[SPEAKER_09]: Is it dangerous?
- 45:26[SPEAKER_05]: I don't see that at all, in fact.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_05]: But I'm hearing from local government officials that
- 45:32[SPEAKER_05]: there's been a reduction in crime, you know, over the past thirty years, like these, you know, the emergency that we hear about doesn't seem to be there, right?
- 45:42[SPEAKER_05]: So it's, it's a, yeah, to see the military, a young couple walking out of the Jewish museum in Washington.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_05]: I'm sure, yeah, I mean, there are definitely incidents of, you know, violence.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_09]: The young intern who was there,
- 45:58[SPEAKER_09]: You know, you'd be proud if your kid could be an intern in Washington, they killed him too.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, it goes on.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_15]: Yeah.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_15]: Yeah.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_09]: And it's unfortunate.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_09]: But I'm sure it's hyperbolized rather the president, but that's what he does.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_05]: That's what he does, right?
- 46:11[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, there are a lot of places that have to address that problem.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_09]: You weren't there the other day when all the heads of state were in town where you came up Sunday, you mean, Zelensky and all the, that's quite a gathering.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_05]: that was there but you know it's also a city in many normal respects to so you know you don't always you don't always see the motorcades or yeah you know the the news is part of it used to be part of Virginia and part Maryland and the part that was part of Virginia went back to Virginia that's why it's no longer a diamond shape that's what I was explained to me yeah
- 46:45[SPEAKER_09]: So the other part could go back to Maryland, except by doing that, they wouldn't get two senators, and Muriel Bowser wouldn't get being a senator.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I mean, there's a longstanding push move for state-hidden DC, and it's sort of taking advantage of some of the power, if you will, of the opposition right now, to say that we need this.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_05]: Home rule needs to be sort of
- 47:14[SPEAKER_05]: permanently transferred to the city is a big population.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_09]: Well, people aren't happy with their local governments anywhere though.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_09]: Here in Watertown, you know, we serve people carpeting about it.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_09]: you know, the local officials, and you study, when your dad was mayor, even city council people were kind of like respected, it was like an honor or something.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_09]: Now they just, similarly, trashing a lot of it.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_09]: I need to say it, Larry, but on the internet, on your Facebooks and all these other things, we have meme pages that just eviscerate people like Patrick, he was sitting in a studio.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_09]: So I mean, times have changed.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_11]: Well, the media started with Goodberg.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_11]: where you have articles because books were too expensive to one town might have one Bible.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_09]: So you don't blame the internet for the impersonality.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_11]: Well, the media, you know, arsenal of clums, the media theorists, the mediumist, the messenger by that, he meant that we, we, we
- 48:15[SPEAKER_11]: create our tools and then our tools shape.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_11]: We're shaped like you and I grew up during an analog era with knobs which is buttons and now you've got these knobs which has been moved.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_11]: You take your phone, you turn it sideways, everything moves.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_11]: They're made of bits, not atoms.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_09]: It is amazing and we use it constantly.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_09]: I mean I
- 48:38[SPEAKER_09]: They're struggling now.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_09]: This fall in the schools.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_09]: They're going to initiate a Bell-to-Bell ban on cell phones.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_09]: I don't know if you read about that.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_09]: In New York schools.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_09]: From Buffalo to Montenegro.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_09]: And we'll see how that works.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_09]: But several other states are doing the same thing.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_09]: Red states and blue states because they're tired.
- 48:57[SPEAKER_09]: Teachers are tired.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_09]: Administrators are tired of the distraction.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_09]: And all the nonsense that goes on.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_11]: Well, he is going to be the same thing.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_11]: change.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_09]: Should we be scared of that?
- 49:10[SPEAKER_11]: Both.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, there's two sides to every packet.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_11]: So it's, uh, there's going to be good because then there's going to be.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_09]: And but a pancake looks the same on both sides.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_09]: That's what I mean.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_09]: There's a difference.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_09]: We got a call.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_09]: Let's take that.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_09]: Good afternoon.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_09]: You're on the hotline.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_09]: Go ahead.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_09]: You're on the air.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_09]: Okay, we got the wrong number there.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_09]: Probably trying to sell us something.
- 49:39[SPEAKER_09]: We'll do a break and we'll be back with our guests in a moment.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_14]: Don't say it often enough.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_14]: Thank you for listening to the station that listens to you.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_14]: The news in talk authority.

- 50:52[SPEAKER_00]: Fuel companies began to charge those fees to offset increases in their operating expenses, without looking like they increased their fuel prices.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: But that just doesn't align with our local company values.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, we keep our company expenses low and only charge you for the fuel you buy.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_00]: Don't pay fees, call us at ENV Energy in Watertown, where the no-feet fuel company.

- 52:51[SPEAKER_14]: The North Country spells news.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_14]: AM twelve forty.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_14]: W-A-T-N.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_14]: Watertown.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_09]: All right, we're back on the hotline here and we've got some great guests today.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_09]: Remember in Watertown, I'm going by and talking about the potential of the Black River.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_09]: We've got Tom Walker, son of the former mayor, and we've got Larry Gordon, son of the former furniture store owner on the Fort Street.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_09]: And was in a big disappointment, Larry, when you didn't take over the business, or they want you to.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_11]: No, they were, they didn't necessarily encourage me.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_11]: Okay.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_09]: And you went to California and you became a big deal in high tax.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_09]: So, I mean, you sound like a big deal in me.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_09]: Maybe you, I think of myself as a big deal.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_09]: Okay, and you were born, you live one town over from, I was born in Palo Alto, which is near Los Altoos where you live.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_11]: I live in the town of Jason.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_11]: I can ride, I have a three mile bike ride to Stanford University.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, I didn't attend Stanford, but I was born near Stanford.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_09]: So I can play him some sort of good school skill or from what I hear.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, well, it's good.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_09]: Good.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_09]: You like California.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_09]: I hear a lot of fans.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, well, there's a lot of great things about it.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_11]: But I'm this water town.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, this season.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_11]: We have beautiful weather, but your nicest day is nice within our
- 54:17[SPEAKER_11]: Really, you know, a luscious, you know, sultry, luscious summer day here, it takes the prize over the best day out California.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_11]: But your worst day is the way worse than our worst day.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_09]: And what I have snow out there, they have all of that.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_09]: So I got a call.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_09]: We'll take a real quick here.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_09]: Go ahead, you're on the air.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_09]: I think Gordon was a great store and I wish Eddie Cruffton.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_09]: Anyway, whatever you wanted, good afternoon, you're on the air.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_18]: I want to congratulate you.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_18]: You've got two nice guests there.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_18]: They're talking about nostalgic water town and how it used to be.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_18]: But there's a lot of industry that's no longer here.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_18]: But as far as the crime rate is they say it's down.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_18]: A lot of that is because they don't report
- 55:10[SPEAKER_09]: Okay, well, I don't really want to get into the DC thing, but I think that's true all over a lot of people are sort of frustrated with crime.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_09]: Well, what did you have something germane to the topic here?
- 55:23[SPEAKER_18]: Okay.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_18]: Is this our future?
- 55:29[SPEAKER_15]: I mean, the reliability of now.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_09]: Sounds good.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_09]: Thank you, sir.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_09]: Well, whatever it's the reality of now, but
- 55:42[SPEAKER_09]: The mood is not good in town, is it?
- 55:44[SPEAKER_09]: People have a down view.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_09]: Remember when they put those city, the future signs up?
- 55:49[SPEAKER_05]: I sure do, yeah.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, we.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_05]: People make fun of those signs now.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_05]: We were wondering really what that was about.
- 55:54[SPEAKER_05]: And I have to say, I mean, one of the reasons that Larry and I have gotten so involved in this is that we do have a sort of a thought about what this future can be here.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_05]: And so as we started to, I want to get back to a question you raised earlier, Jeff, as we get back to, you know, what the future holds for the Black River and the community
- 56:19[SPEAKER_05]: You know, beyond what I'm calling the sort of hydro-adgemony, you know, the sort of dominant control of the management of the river, you know, the question is, we want to ask, what's limiting us here?
- 56:36[SPEAKER_05]: What's the obstacle?
- 56:38[SPEAKER_05]: We're asking people, why is this not a good idea?
- 56:41[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, there's some, you know, financial concerns, maybe competition,
- 56:46[SPEAKER_09]: It's a part of its economic.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, but on the other hand, there is a lot of money around, but I don't know.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_09]: I think people are frustrated.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_09]: I brought it up earlier, and I don't mean to beat a dead horse.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_09]: But people say, I don't want to back my car into a parking place, and the answer is, go park over there in another lot.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_09]: Pat, you heard at the other night.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_09]: You were at the meeting, or you're watching it on TV.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_09]: And that's frustrating for people.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_09]: or the bureaucracy says this or that or whatever.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_09]: And we talked earlier about residency back when your dad was married, expected to live here, who was senior, particularly senior man.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_09]: Right.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_09]: Now at four thirty today all senior management had it out of town.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_09]: And you know, something happens after four thirty.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_09]: We got people to deal with it again.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_05]: But I would go back to the question about, you know, why don't you come back and run for mayor?
- 57:42[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, I think you got the name recognition.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_09]: People both, they loved your father.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_09]: They thought he did a great job, but he did.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_09]: And you seem to have an even temperament and an knowledge institutional knowledge galore.
- 57:57[SPEAKER_05]: A little bit of that.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, I know your family sold the house on Iv Street, but there's plenty of properties available.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_09]: You know, you're welcome back.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_09]: I mean, there's an election in twenty seven for mayor.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_09]: So you think about that, all right?
- 58:11[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I'm fortunate to have my sister who's still here.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_05]: You know, she's very welcoming my sister and brother-in-law when I come back to visit.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah.
- 58:20[SPEAKER_05]: And so far, that's been working fine.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_05]: And I think I would kind of keep it at that.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_09]: People at that later, you don't want to come back and run for anything.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_11]: I, I've not cut out for politics.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_09]: We got to talk call for one quick call.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_09]: Good afternoon on the air.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_09]: Okay.
- 58:36[SPEAKER_09]: All right.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_09]: You get the few of those type.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_09]: So do you have like a website or someplace where they can contact you?
- 58:43[SPEAKER_09]: Because we only got a little bit of a few seconds left here.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_05]: No, we don't have a website or Facebook page, I think it's in the works right now.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_05]: I don't know how we get that information to you.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_18]: They can contact me.
- 58:57[SPEAKER_05]: They're practically okay, Pat Hickey, who's sitting here with us and been a great help to us.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_05]: He can be someone you can contact for access to that website page.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_05]: I also mentioned that some of the things we raised about the current situation around compliance and water hydro power in the city was addressed in an op-ed that we wrote published in the Watertown Daily Times on June seven.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_05]: That's on line.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_05]: If you want to go back and take a look at that.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_09]: We had another hour we could discuss the hydro power dilemma but we have no time to get into that mess.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_09]: So if you want to come back or crawling sometime, we can talk about that.
- 59:36[SPEAKER_09]: You got to make maybe Glenn show that you do it there if you want it at five o'clock.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_09]: All right, that's our show for today.
- 59:42[SPEAKER_09]: We had Larry Gordon here in Tom Walker.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_09]: Thank you, gentlemen for coming in from far away to talk to us, us folks on the hotline.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_09]: Thank you.
- 59:50[SPEAKER_09]: Thank you.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_09]: Thank you, gentlemen.
- 59:52[SPEAKER_09]: And that is our show for today.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_09]: Glenn will be in at five.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_09]: Make sure you listen.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_09]: This is AM-Trial Forty.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_09]: We are WATN Watertown, New York.
