Corey Alston, a Mount Pleasant artisan, just shattered records with the world’s largest sweetgrass basket—“Big Percy”—a 52-inch-tall, 80-pound masterpiece unveiled at the South Carolina State Museum. Commissioned in fall 2024 and woven over winter 2025, this historic piece, inspired by a ’74 film character, marks the first documented basket of its scale. Made from sweetgrass, palmetto fronds, and marsh bulrush, it’s a stunning tribute to Gullah craftsmanship.
