- 2:29Amy Schulberg Goodman or Chief of Staff Matt Sutton will be here. One of
- 2:31the two, I'm not sure which one's going to walk through the door here
- 2:35at Parmar Store Studio. One of them will at around nine to forty years
- 2:38sold this morning. We also we're going to spend some time talking about this
- 2:40big event Thursday night at bill No Flight School. It is the Paint the
- 2:45Capitol City Green event. I'm gonna be m seeing that event from Marsha University's
- 2:47Quarterback Club along with Steve Annibal from her sister Station ninety eight seven, Wild
- 2:53and Wonderful, Classic Rock, the Mountain and Animals going to join us to
- 2:58talk about not only the event a little bit and Rob, but also to
- 3:00talk about the buzz about this new station here in Charleston. Everybody's talking about.
- 3:05Well, let me bringing somebody unlike myself, an animal and actually know
- 3:07what's going on with this paint the capital city green. To me. This
- 3:09Robert stone Street, who is the president of the Marshal Quarterback Club. Robert,
- 3:13good morning, How are you, sir? I'm well, Dave,
- 3:15how are you? I'm doing fine. So figured we'd have the guy,
- 3:17the important guy in here first to talk about this big event, and then
- 3:21Animal and I can just kind of muck it up, you know. In
- 3:23the second segment. How does that sound? Well, that sounds good.
- 3:25I'd say important. It's a little overrated, but I do what I can
- 3:30to keep the event going. Well. Again, you're with the Marshal Quarterback
- 3:32Club of Charleston's gonna be a big night up on the hill Thursday night,
- 3:36Robert, Yes, sir, this is our third year up at the bill
- 3:38No Flight School at Yeager Airport. We started this event up at the airport
- 3:45during the COVID when getting together in enclosed spaces was discouraged and folks really enjoyed
- 3:51the atmosphere and we've been going back now. This is our third time having
- 3:55the event up there. It is and it's a very unique place to have
- 3:59at number one one. I was up there Thursday for a meeting and what
- 4:03they're doing up there with this bill no Flight School is just incredible. I
- 4:06mean they just keep adding the number of students that are taking part in it.
- 4:10So kudos to Marshall University for pulling this off. But it's not just
- 4:13Marshall. I mean it's their school of course, but also the folks up
- 4:15at Western Uta International Yeager Airport and a lot of the elected officials got involved
- 4:20to bring the thing here. It's a great thing for the Charleston and for
- 4:23the entire metro valley. It absolutely is. It's a wonderful facility. If
- 4:27you haven't been up, I encourage you to come up on Thursday. Yeah
- 4:30you can be a great time to do it. Yeah. Great. Everything's
- 4:31right under the hangar there. Because I was talking to somebody about this over
- 4:34the weekend and they said, well, how exactly do they have it in
- 4:36the hangar? It works. I mean you just have everybody in there.
- 4:41It's a big party like tailgate type atmosphere. Let's talk about the Marshall Quarterback
- 4:46Club. What exactly is the Quarterback Club here? So the Quarterback Club is
- 4:49a booster club for the Big Green Scholarship Foundation. We have historically focused on
- 4:55the football program, hence the name, and we raise money for the football
- 5:00program. In recent years we started to focus more on sports in general at
- 5:05Marshall and basketball, baseball, softball, lots of other exciting things down at
- 5:10Marshall. But we're basically here to promote Marshall sports in the Canal Valley,
- 5:16raise money, support the program, increase awareness and just keep Marshall's top of
- 5:23mind here in the Fast and a lot. I think just about all the
- 5:25coaches are going to be there, is that right? Yeah, We're We're
- 5:28definitely gonna have coach Huff He's sort of our keynote speaker, Dan dan Tony
- 5:32from the men's basketball program. We anticipate having him, Chris Grassie the men's
- 5:36soccer program, and we're still working on the rest of the lineup. But
- 5:42we're hoping to have new baseball coach Greg Deals and hopefully the new softball coach
- 5:47Morgan Zircle, and maybe even the new women's basketball coach Kim Caldwell, and
- 5:50of course the president, mister Smith is gonna be there, and Christian Spears,
- 5:56athletic director, I think, is gonna be there. It's gonna be
- 5:58a great night up great and you know, this event just gets bigger and
- 6:01better every year. And as I mentioned the top of the show, Robert
- 6:03I had the opportunity to m see the event last year along with the semi
- 6:08legendary Steve Annible. We must have done something rights or maybe not done too
- 6:12much damage because you're having us back for the second straight year. But since
- 6:15then, you know, Steve and I are now co workers because he's with
- 6:17our new station, A wild, wonderful Class of Rock ninety seven a Mountain.
- 6:21We're gonna talk to with Steve and his co host Shockley about that a
- 6:25little bit later on. So where are we on tables? Because I mean,
- 6:29that's a big deal, it's a it's a it's a big event,
- 6:31big area, but you don't have unlimited space up there. Where are we
- 6:35on tables? Well, right now, we've got thirty two sponsored tables and
- 6:41those are available. I think we still have a few room, a little
- 6:44bit of room left. You can get a white sponsored table for eleven hundred
- 6:47dollars. Each table's ten seats, or you can be a Green sponsor for
- 6:51twenty six hundred dollars and get some priority seating and the potential of a sit
- 6:56with and interact with players and coaches as well. And we're looking at right
- 7:00now to have well over three hundred Herd fans at the event, so we're
- 7:04getting close to a sellout, but there's still there's still space we can make
- 7:10room. We will not be selling tickets at the door, so you will
- 7:13need to register in advance if if you want to come to the event.
- 7:16And again, this is one of those things that I said the entire Marshal
- 7:19community comes out for, but not just them. I mean, I think
- 7:23Charleston Mary Amy Schooler, a good one, is expected to to be there,
- 7:27some other elected officials are going to be there. Plus you got the
- 7:30cheerleaders that will make an appearance there too, And it's just kind of a
- 7:33raw, raw event to get people ready for the upcoming football season, which
- 7:38should be a good one for the Herd. Yes, we do have an
- 7:41exciting season lined up. We've got Virginia Tech is coming to Huntington in September
- 7:46and then the Herd is traveling to Raleigh to play NC State. So those
- 7:49are two pretty big non conference games. And then you know in the sun
- 7:56Belt, that's that's looking to be a really good conference for us. And
- 8:01we've already got a rivalry going with Appalachian State. Well that goes back years
- 8:05long time and that is rekindled quite quickly. And we're returning to Boone this
- 8:11year to take on, uh, those Mountaineers. And we don't want people,
- 8:16Robert to think that this was some kind of a fancy dinner or anything.
- 8:18I mean, you know, Annibal and I are running the thing.
- 8:20How fancy could it possibly be? But this is a like I said,
- 8:24it's a tailgate type event. There's always great food. Who's doing the food
- 8:28this year? So it is a tailgate style event, so um, you
- 8:33know, wings and other and other food. But we do have chef Paul
- 8:37Smith with ten ten Bridge and the Pitch. He did the food last year,
- 8:41it was wonderful. We're having him back again this year. We're gonna
- 8:45have local craft beer available, including some selections from Fife Street Brewing, who
- 8:48is one of our table sponsors this year. But it but it is very
- 8:52relaxed. You know where your game day gear for the event. Don't don't
- 8:56come out thinking that you're gonna as I said, you're not going to a
- 8:58banquet. Are going to basically what is the tailgate party? And you've got
- 9:03this thing is just so big. I mean, they've got the video screens
- 9:05up showing the highlights of seasons pass and things that we can expect for this
- 9:09season. As I said, it's an opportunity to interact with the coaches.
- 9:13They're all going to be there. From Dan Toni, who you never had
- 9:16a chance to hang out with, Coach D'Antoni. You're in for a good
- 9:18night and of course Huff two. But dan Toni has kind of got when
- 9:22he's there, you know, he didn't have all the stress on him that
- 9:24Huff does because Huffs just a couple of weeks away from the beginning of the
- 9:28season. So Dantoni is laughing it up and high five in people and just
- 9:31doing things that Dan D'Antoni does. Now, if people do want tickets for
- 9:35the event to get tickets are not sold at the door, so you got
- 9:37to get him advance. What do they need to do? You can call
- 9:41the Big Green at three o four six nine six four six six one,
- 9:46or you can email the Quarterback Club at MUQB Club Charleston at gmail dot com.
- 9:54And again I want to stress this because in the world of sports,
- 9:58and there's no bigger sports fan than I, we have a tendency, you
- 10:01know, to say, Okay, you're either WVU or your Marshall, you
- 10:05know, but that doesn't necessarily I attend to the WV event with Kariti here
- 10:09last week, the Inside of the Huddle event, the benefit for the United
- 10:11Way. You can actually support both teams, So I mean you can have
- 10:15you can. I'm on to lean a little bit toward Marshall because that's where
- 10:18I went, But you can support both teams absolutely. And I'm a dual
- 10:22graduate, Okay, to undergraduate school at Marshall and then I went to graduate
- 10:26school law school in Morgantown at WVU. So so yes, you can support
- 10:31both and we would welcome, welcome all to come to the event. Yeah.
- 10:35So it's gonna be a great night. It always is again when we
- 10:37get people together for this thing, and it just goes to show you again
- 10:41the support that Marshall has here in the Kanal Valley because they do similar events
- 10:46in different areas, but there's nothing quite like this in any other city like
- 10:50there is here in the Charleston area. Yeah, and I'll just just mention
- 10:54you can buy individual tickets. You don't have to pay for a whole table.
- 10:58Those are only sixty dollars so if you want, But but you gotta
- 11:01get him advance yah to get him an event not available to or give us
- 11:03the contact information again, sure that it's the Big Green three zero four six
- 11:07nine six four six six one, or you can email the Quarterback Club at
- 11:13MUQB Club Charleston at gmail dot com. All right, it's gonna be a
- 11:18great night, looking forward to it, Robert, I appreciate you being here
- 11:20man. Thanks a lot of thank you, Dave Arbert stone Street again from
- 11:22the Quarterback Club here in Marshall. Five eighty Live presented in Charleston. I

- 15:07by the studio. How are you, aunt man? How are you?
- 15:09We're good? We're good. Had a great weekend. Uh survived it,
- 15:13did a road trip up to Detroit, had to see the peep so had
- 15:18an eightieth and ninetieth birthday to celebrate. You don't look at day over seventy
- 15:22five. That's that's amazing. Shockley's with us as well. How are you
- 15:28man, Hey, It's good to go. Yeah, I earned a privilege
- 15:31to be here in the HS studios where if there is a nuclear holocaust,
- 15:37I want to come into this room right here. You gotta go down the
- 15:39steps and you feel like you're an abasement and I can smell them all nice
- 15:45like to keep me away from general population. It's it's it's it's better if
- 15:48they just kind of keep me away from things. So Animal, they're turning
- 15:50us loose again at this thing. And Robert stone Street and I talked about
- 15:54it at the top of the show. With the Marshal Quarterback Club and paint
- 15:58the Capitol City green. Third United put to build no Flight School at Marshall
- 16:03University up on the hill at the airport. I guess they didn't learn the
- 16:06lesson last year that a live mic in the hands of David Animal can be
- 16:10a dangerous thing. And that's true. And to celebrate we are going to
- 16:14absolutely prepare nothing. That's kind of the late role. I am not joking.
- 16:22It's gonna be a good time, good fundraiser of course for Marshall University
- 16:26and the athletic club. I know a lot of the other sports coach heads
- 16:32will be roaming through the building. It should be a good time. Yeah,
- 16:34I mean pretty much every coach is going to be there. From what
- 16:37I understand, a couple of more kind of iffy because he had, you
- 16:38know, recruiting that up. But I know that d'antoni's going to be there,
- 16:42and I know coach Hop's going to be there, and he's the one
- 16:44that's got everything going on right now. Yeah, with the kick opening week,
- 16:48you know, coming here in just a couple of weeks. Last year,
- 16:49Steve, was the first year you and I got to m see it
- 16:52and we had fun. Last year. We did. We did, and
- 16:55there's a good grub. So yes, good grub good. We're there.
- 17:00Absolutely absolutely, And as I said, and I was talking about this,
- 17:03Robert and uh and Shock, you can jump into this as well. You
- 17:07can support both WVU and Marshall and State and you see and all the other
- 17:15schools here in the area. I'm kind of an example of someone who went
- 17:18to Marshall, has a degree from Marshall, went to WVU, has a
- 17:22degree from WVU, went to State, has a degree from State, and
- 17:27then, um, were you kicked out of that many places? I actually
- 17:32finished, but I think it was like, all right, dude, we
- 17:33really need to get rid of you. So what do you want? Not
- 17:37that we don't want to take your money, but if we've ever met anybody
- 17:41that is grossly overqualified for radio, I think it might be shockedly. Yes,
- 17:45absolutely, Now you know I'm a Marshall guy. I believe Kelly Greene.
- 17:49But but see you kind of married into this thing, is that right?
- 17:52I did? I did? My wife Jody graduated there from I'm trying
- 17:56to think of the year now. I want to hang myself here. I
- 18:03know she went during the Randy Mosses years there and uh yeah, so uh
- 18:08I got dragged in through default and drinking and footballing and she loves college.
- 18:15Forty five minute drive to go, has some bruskies and watch football. You're
- 18:18in exactly she's driving. Yeah, there you go. And again we want
- 18:22people to understand this is not going to be a big, fancy fair.
- 18:26Just five hundred or so of your closest hurt and fanatics getting together and hopefully
- 18:30some of the band, the cheerleaders, football players, whoever. Coaches will
- 18:33definitely be there. You never know who's going to show up, so it's
- 18:36always a good time. It's pretty much the way it was last year against
- 18:37Steve animal is with us. He and I will be him seeing this event.
- 18:41Shockley is also here. He's also going to be tagged along. I
- 18:44understand you said free food. I'm like, yeah, he might be all
- 18:48degreed up, but he's still a radio guy exactly. I want to talk
- 18:52about the station guys, UM, and I don't want to take a slight
- 18:56bit of slight bit. Yes, you forget you back into this crazy business
- 19:00of radio. You did a couple of guest spots on the show, and
- 19:03Chockoley came in on a Friday and did the show with me, and just
- 19:07like a fungus man, it just wouldn't go away. And you're back again.
- 19:11Yeah, it's it's a lot of fun. We're having a ball a
- 19:15week number four. We I wasn't sure my key card was gonna work this
- 19:19morning, and wait, did you got a key card? And for three
- 19:23years I still haven't given me one of those. But the response guys to
- 19:26the station UM has been absolutely incredible. And again if you're not familiar,
- 19:32it's it's we moved the beat to one oh seven three, correct, and
- 19:37so we took we had nine to eighty seven, which had been to beat
- 19:41for many minutes. We put this thing on the air called The Mountain Wild
- 19:44Wonderful classic rock, and and just to clear upson confusion for anyone who says,
- 19:48well, there was already a rock station in town. Yeah, and
- 19:51big respect to those guys, and you and I both worked for that particular
- 19:53company. You're not gonna say anything negative about them. But but what what
- 19:56you guys are doing here, though, is it's totally different. Yeah.
- 20:00Because the fields wide open, we can do what we want, which is
- 20:06really awesome. So what we wanted was more rock, and so they're like,
- 20:11what do you want to play? It's like everything, Yes, everything
- 20:15I can get my hands on, with a lot less talk, absolutely,
- 20:18because sometimes there's too much chatter in the mornings, and especially for the rock
- 20:22radio audience. So yeah, I think one of the ways that we were
- 20:26able to diversify our station and compared to some of the others, is that
- 20:30we keep it short, we keep it sweet. It's not a lot of
- 20:33well, there's no necessity for a canned laughter or anything like that because we
- 20:38don't tell each other what we're going to do before we crack them light exactly,
- 20:41So it makes it very entertaining. I don't know what he's going to
- 20:45say, or vice versa. And that makes for good radio, it does.
- 20:51And one of the things too, being I'm a I'm a classic rock
- 20:53fan. That's what I'm generally speaking listen to. And I've had opportunity to
- 20:56work at a couple of classic rock stations. You're playing some music on there
- 21:00that you maybe haven't heard in the Charleston area for a while, going back
- 21:03and getting some of those titles that maybe people forgot about a long time.
- 21:07I mean there, I'm pulling stuff back from when I first got here about
- 21:11thirty three years ago. Um, some of the stuff that you haven't heard,
- 21:15maybe you heard it once, and uh so I'm gonna keep digging in.
- 21:18There's thousands of records that we played back in the day that just and
- 21:22he literally means records because I guess all three of us, all three of
- 21:26us actually probably started out playing records are from that era. Yes, we
- 21:33had a Sunday morning syndicated program where we was called Mission Control where we would
- 21:37get one of those real big records and put it on the turntable and so
- 21:41yeah, and then it was cart machines. But yeah, we all but
- 21:45we all actually did but getting back to the point for I interrupted myself there.
- 21:48Uh, that's what That's kind of the whole The whole thing about the
- 21:52station is is kind of digging up some of this music and a lot of
- 21:56people. Again, what kind of separates us is there were a lot of
- 21:59people that loved classic rock. They grew up in the seventies, in sixty
- 22:03seventies, eighties, even in the nineties. They they like Leonard Skinner,
- 22:07they like the Almond Brothers, they like Clapped In and some of these people.
- 22:11But they don't necessarily like the new stuff. And because there's kind of
- 22:14a big difference, and it's not good or bad, it's different, right
- 22:18which wee what what was what's considered classic right now? What's considered new stuff?
- 22:22We don't. We don't do new stuff. And we dealt with that.
- 22:23The last radio station we worked for that we did the Morning Short for
- 22:27Yeah, it was a rock station, but they played a lot of that
- 22:30emo stuff and all that, where we just we would just turn it down
- 22:33and you know, listen to other music on our cell phones just because we're
- 22:37the whiny emo stuff we weren't into whereas this it's right on target. The
- 22:42music is dead on I mean hearing the cars again and hearing some of the
- 22:47deep tracks from Sticks again. Um, it's been The response has been overwhelming
- 22:52because there has been a need for that in this market for a while.
- 22:55Yeah, so it's kind of it's kind of fun. And just even looking
- 22:59back, like you said, Almond Brothers or Zeppelin, I mean back you
- 23:02know in the nineties, you know, they were kind of considered classic at
- 23:06the time. Now they're really classic, exactly. Yeah. We we've given
- 23:12rock a new leash on life, if you will, and you have a
- 23:15better choice and the and there I mean as I said, uh, this
- 23:18is week four, is that? Yeah? I been that long. I
- 23:21know Friday I did the best of Steve Animal. That's probably that didn't take
- 23:26long. Oh no, no, yeah. I was like, yeah,
- 23:27I said, this is the best you're gonna get. Ye, so is
- 23:32our farewell tour right yeah. But but I mean again, the response of
- 23:36this has just been incredible and it follow us on on social media. I
- 23:40help out a little bit with that. Seven the Mountain and you can listen
- 23:45online around the world in nationwide at nine eight seven the Mountain dot com and
- 23:49the app is being developed, yes, because we've got to get that app
- 23:52Chocolates working on it right now. Yes, but we need to go higher
- 23:56up. Yeah, no doubt, do some bagging and uh and the in
- 24:00the lineup again. You guys do mornings, but you've got Matt Murphy mc
- 24:04guitar Murphy uh uh doing mid days. And then you got the awesome Tricia,
- 24:11who is just you talk about a fantastic radio talent. Listen to Tricia
- 24:15in the afternoon starting about three o'clock and she does a great job washing my
- 24:19car. Yes. And then of course the iconic Alice Cooper was on at
- 24:25night seven o'clock Alice Cooper on air and then weeknights six forty five, It's

- 24:48four four zero one one zero one. Uh. Tex says I can't support
- 24:52both universities and athletics. Answer me, this does Alabama or Auburn does Alabama?
- 25:00For Auburn or Auburn for Alabama. Absolutely not talked about Mike. Well,
- 25:04no, actually they don't. But but let's keep in mind that WVU
- 25:08and Marshall don't play each other. Yeah, so it's not I mean to
- 25:14me as as a Marshall guy, it's not a natural rivalry because they haven't
- 25:18played in basketball in years. They still play baseball and some of the other
- 25:21sports. But um, you absolutely can when they don't play each other,
- 25:25right, I never understood the whole either or thing. Yeah, well there's
- 25:30you know, both sides are probably guilty. I mean, I think it's
- 25:33a crime that they don't play. I mean I really do. And I
- 25:36know the arguments. They say that it's all it's all gained for Marshall and
- 25:38WVU has nothing to gain. You know, you can only refer them and
- 25:41I completely understand that in the world of dollars and cents in sports, because
- 25:45that's what it's all about these days. But I do think it's criminal that
- 25:48they don't at least play in basketball. I mean, everybody look forward to
- 25:52the Capitol Classic when the legislature was in session, you know, having it
- 25:55over to colle Covicion Center and getting everybody together, talk a little bit of
- 25:59smile can um. And of course, you know, I think a big
- 26:03part of that had to do with Dan dan Tony, because Dan Tony likes
- 26:07to poke the bear, so to speak, no pun intenda. And he
- 26:11did a good job. He did. He did an excellent job on that.
- 26:12But but I do appreciate the texture bringing that up, all right,
- 26:15and the reason you know, again, we had you here to talk about
- 26:18the big event on Thursday night up on the hill. We'll start about what
- 26:21time, five thirty. Yeah, you can start rolling in like around five
- 26:25five thirty. Event, we'll get underway at six o'clock. He can still
- 26:27get the tickets. If you don't want to whole table, get an individual
- 26:33ticket. I think it's sixty bucks. You can call the Big Green at
- 26:36three or four six nine six four six six one. See how he rolled
- 26:41that off the top of his head. There after it's happening, and when
- 26:42he turns it on, he's got this moves going on. Well, I've
- 26:47been doing it for quite a few years. But yeah, it's it is
- 26:51gonna, it's gonna it's gonna be a great night up there. And again,
- 26:55even if you're there, there will be people there that you know,
- 26:59aren't hard as hardcore fans is what we are, and that's okay. It's
- 27:02just it's a good time and it's for it's for great cause there too.
- 27:04And if you've never been up to the flight school, it is very awesome
- 27:08because you'll see the Marshall planes, you'll be on the tarmac, you'll be
- 27:11in the hangar. The whole event is pretty cool up on the mountain,
- 27:15it is. And I was talking about that with Robert a little bit earlier,
- 27:18guys that what they have done with that flight school up there is absolutely
- 27:22incredible. And I had a meeting up there about this event on Thursday and
- 27:25I got a chance to, you know, see talk to some of the
- 27:26students that were there and about what they're learning up there. This is a
- 27:30first class operation that Marshall University has put together here that that a lot of
- 27:34schools of their size simply don't have around the country. True, and Coach
- 27:38Huff will be flying in from Huntington from Huntington Airport via that long commute.
- 27:45Yeah, well, you know you got to show your stuff off. Yeah,
- 27:49exactly right, So, well, it's going to be a great time.
- 27:52We look forward to us seeing everybody up there. Oh there's a Texas
- 27:56says the animal is on the prowl again. Yes, I am h Texas.
- 28:02Dave agree. W and Marshall should play every year in football and basketball.
- 28:06Fans want this game to happen, and it's always a sellout thing.
- 28:07It is, it is. And I remember when they were Marshall a few
- 28:12years back. What a great game. Yeah, I mean it both both
- 28:17fans, you know, both sides were just having a great time and it
- 28:21was packed well in the wv's conference now has eighty eight teams in it,
- 28:25so just keep adding add added to it. Annibal, my friends, Shockley's
- 28:30great always having you guys here. But I don't want you to think,
- 28:33I don't want anybody to think, Annibal before we let you go, that
- 28:36you've given up any of your other interests, because, like me, what's
- 28:41another couple of jobs, right, actually making that money with East Coast Tease
- 28:45and some new stuff. Talk about that. Yeah, the Vinyl Frontier.
- 28:48That has to be the coolest name ever, the Vinyl Frontier. Yes,
- 28:52we've actually rewrap. He comes up with a great idea every now and then.
- 28:56Yeah, I can't take all the credit for it. Boomer and the
- 29:00rest of the crew do a great job there. But we've wrapped the one
- 29:04hundred vehicle Woodie's a new ride for the Beat, and the Mountain truck.
- 29:11We've got that actually in the East Coast He's parking lot. We're actually gonna
- 29:15light that thing up. It's gonna really good. Oh yeah, yeah yeah.
- 29:18And what kind of other services do you offer. I'm giving the opportunity
- 29:21for free plugs. So we do not only screen printing, but embroidery.
- 29:26We just added eleven new embroidery heads. So yet polos, hats, shirts,
- 29:30whatever, promotional products, and a whole line of like you said,
- 29:34the vinyl stuff. We've been doing political signs, yard signs, big signs,
- 29:40four by eight building signs, all the signs you see like around the
- 29:44football fields and stuff. We do that kind of And let's go ahead,
- 29:47and you mentioned political, let's go ahead and throw that out there because it
- 29:48is political season. It didn't used to start this early, but that's the
- 29:53in the era of the perpetual campaign. Ye. So I know our legislators
- 29:57are all in session right now, but if anybody out there is running for
- 30:00office, so you're thinking about running for office next year presentations everything, get
- 30:04those signs. Yep. Absolutely. You can call East Coast Teas or the

- 30:26tomorrow morning. And one of the things I like about it too is that
- 30:29you guys go in and it's just okay, it's just another day of rock
- 30:32and roll. And what I mean by that, I don't mean that in
- 30:33a bad way, but you go in. I don't have to say,
- 30:36well, what do you I mean because me people said, what are you
- 30:37talking about today? What do you can you? Guys, it's the music
- 30:41star. The music is the star. What happened overnight matters sometimes what's happening,

- 35:34morning. I'm wonderful, great to have you here. Of course, the
- 35:37theme of the morning has been to paint the Capitol City green event and you're
- 35:39gonna be there. You're gonna be there. And we're especially said because now
- 35:45now you have a I mean, always had a reason to be there,
- 35:47but now you really got a reasonable I do. My son, Joseph is
- 35:52just moved him in to his dorm room over the weekend and campus looks amazing.
- 35:59By the way. He is a transfer student. He's going to Marshall
- 36:02now. So I truly am a house divided. I've got one at WV
- 36:06and one at Marshall, so I need one one of those little flags,
- 36:08you know. But he's a member of them Marching Thunder. He made the
- 36:15quads. He's a drummer, which you know, you think if you marry
- 36:20a drummer, you give birth to like a pianist or a trumpet player.
- 36:24Nope, I got another drum another drummer, another drummer. It's very loud
- 36:29in my house. But we're excited. We're excited about it. It's the
- 36:34paints, it's it is um it's an amazing event. I unfortunately had to
- 36:38miss last year with you. I know it was a huge crowd, but
- 36:40the first year that I went, it was just lights out fun. I
- 36:45mean so much fun. The kids love it. They pass out all this
- 36:49fun Marshall University stuff. I got my clear bag on Saturday. When I
- 36:53went to drop off my son, they were selling a whole bunch of stuff,
- 36:55new new rules they have at the stadium, which okay by me.
- 37:00I gotta I got a new bag. Yeah, so I'm like, oh,
- 37:05I need to have this. I want to throw this out of totally
- 37:07unrelated to you. A caller just got with Ryan wanted me to mention this
- 37:10to today's National Purple Heart Day. So Ran, I appreciate you letting me
- 37:15know that I want to talk. I want to I want to start by
- 37:16talking about the weather, just from because this is what they call in the
- 37:20weather business text here, this is what they call a severe weather alert day.
- 37:25Uh, I mean, we one of these weird things. This morning,
- 37:29Mayor. I'm driving in from Tad's Valley a little after seven this morning,
- 37:31sun is shining as brightly as I can and it's pouring the rain on
- 37:35the interstate. We are expecting some pretty severe conditions later in the day.
- 37:38And I bring this up to you because the city, like all cities,
- 37:43you gotta go into a little bit of an extra mode there when this happens.
- 37:45Yeah, we do, if you recall, uh and I do.
- 37:50Boy gosh, you is in twenty nineteen we had an episode like this,
- 37:53um and we actually had two tornadoes touchdown in the city of Charleston when we
- 37:59had really bad weather back then. But you know, as I mentioned to
- 38:02you on my way in the studio, I got an email from my Director
- 38:06of Homeland Security saying, appears the chances have increased in all categories for the
- 38:12severe weather threat today. Storms expected in this area around two. Our Office
- 38:19of Emergency Services, the EOC is already in place. It was in place.
- 38:25The county always does a great job. Jennifer Harold who's the county manager,
- 38:30and CW. Sigmund and all of those folks, they do an amazing
- 38:34job. But our folks will be up there and be ready to go high
- 38:37winds, damaging hail. So get tucked away if you're going to be somewhere,
- 38:43kind of get tucked away and stay there. But that is going to
- 38:46be the first big round. So by one fifteen, one thirty, lock
- 38:51yourselves in place. And you know mother nature, she's fickle, right,
- 38:53she could be here a minute, she could change, she could move.
- 38:57But right now, what we're saying is starting at two o'clock and then what
- 39:00they tell me is there going to be it's gonna be another sweep through in
- 39:04the evening where we're gonna have to kind of keep our eyes on the sky
- 39:07and um and watch for traffic. You know when it's I'm terring, you
- 39:12know, I know you know this about mamateurial driver. I don't like to
- 39:14drive. I don't like to drive if it's just a sprinkle outside. So
- 39:17something like this, I'm not going anywhere. I'm in my office. Unk.
- 39:22Well, we are going to be going to the city council. Yeah,
- 39:23we have a we have a packed agenda. They want to pack the
- 39:27sleeping bag because it's going to be a long one, I think, right.
- 39:29And one of the things I think that it's going to be brought up
- 39:30and I want to touch on this is the UM is a needle change program,
- 39:34or at least the latest one public meeting was held a couple of weeks
- 39:37ago, about one hundred people on both sides of the argument showed up.
- 39:40It is expected to be taken up tonight. What exactly is going to happen
- 39:44with this tonight? Mar Yeah, sure so um our city clerk, Miles
- 39:49Carry, who's just amazing. If you know Miles, he grew up in
- 39:51the West Side. He's just a wonderful young man who is our city clerk.
- 39:54Actually was trying to do um, trying to do some organization before the
- 40:00meeting tonight, because we know there's a lot of interest in the public speaking
- 40:04for this resolution, and there are lots of folks who are speaking in opposition
- 40:12of this resolution. And what it is is to allow the Women's Health Center,
- 40:15which is right there on Charleston's West Side, to begin a syringe exchange
- 40:23program, uh in you know, encompassing other harm reduction services. This.
- 40:30You know, when people say, oh, we don't we don't need that.
- 40:34We got rid of it. We don't need it. What folks need
- 40:36to realize is we do have a syringe exchange program in the state. Most
- 40:40cities across the state of West Virginia have shyringe exchange programs already in place.
- 40:47Restrictive rules right because we went through that many years ago about if you're going
- 40:53to have one right, if you're going to offer that as a service within
- 40:57you know, some some people when they get into you know, harm reduction
- 41:00services or get into recovery. This is just one tool. This may not
- 41:06be a tool that someone chooses, but this might be a tool that someone
- 41:08chooses. The state pass laws of what you're allowed to do, what you're
- 41:15not allowed to do when operating one of these, as did the City of
- 41:17Charleston many years ago, and we made it restrictive. And I'll tell you
- 41:22why we did. There are many of us, by the way, that
- 41:25believe in all of these harm reduction services, and I'm actually one of them.
- 41:30I have real concern about this location, and most important, I have
- 41:36real concerns about how it came about. I will say this, I'm a
- 41:40voting member of council. By the way, we have the largest council in
- 41:44the country, and I am one vote. I've not had one single person
- 41:50who is sponsoring this bill call me and ask for my vote, asked me
- 41:53if I'm supportive of it. So the conversation should be robust. It absolutely
- 42:00should be um. But but I have real challenges with this and right now.
- 42:05I'm I'm a no vote on this bill tonight. When you have an
- 42:09outside political entity pushing instead of physicians calling, I got a problem with that.
- 42:15And that's what's happened with this that in addition to UH council members from
- 42:23wards one, two, three, four, five, six, which are
- 42:27all on the West side, tell me please don't don't do this. We
- 42:30know there's a problem. But it's not just Charleston, you know. We
- 42:35when we have these conversations, and we do have, like I said,
- 42:38a certaine exchange program in the city of Charleston, and we can debate,
- 42:43and we should, by the way, Dave, where they should be.
- 42:45Who can you know? We have to have rules around them, right And
- 42:50here's why, because it has been made into a political fight, not a
- 42:55medical fight. It is a political as with everything ever you know nowadays,
- 43:00and so you know, my job is to listen to both sides, which,
- 43:04by the way, I have you see it on your desk here.
- 43:07I've got a stack. It's probably like four inches thick of folks who have
- 43:10called my office email, my office called our team members. By the way,
- 43:15I had two meetings with two physicians over the past ten days. I
- 43:20have, by the way, it wasn't even supposed to be on the agenda.
- 43:22We were going to introduce it tonight. Give people more time to have
- 43:27calls and do meetings. My outreach to the Women's Health Center, my meeting
- 43:31with them isn't even scheduled until one o'clock today. Because I was out of
- 43:36town Municipal League last week the week before, we couldn't make it happen.
- 43:39I have meetings this week setup, which I'm not going to change, by
- 43:43the way, because the conversation needs to happen. But the two physicians told
- 43:46me ten days ago, twelve days ago, both different physicians in town,
- 43:52who if I said their names, you would go, oh yeah, wildly
- 43:53respected and wonderful. Yeah, we do have some challenges aiming, but it's
- 43:58not just Charleston. It's in and I'm not gonna, you know, not
- 44:01going to mention cities this city, this city, this city, this city,
- 44:05this city of this city. So it's a county issue, it's not.
- 44:07It's yeah, Charleston was within the county. But the conversation really needs
- 44:12to be about where and how can we be effective in doing this? How
- 44:17do you think this wouldn't be effective where it is, well, I think
- 44:22number one. If you look at the CDC recommendations for Surrens of Change program,
- 44:25one of their top pillars. You know, they have things like you
- 44:29need to do this, and here here are the rules and guidelines right which.
- 44:30I listened to the CDC like it, love it or hate it,
- 44:34folks, I listen to them. They tell me to get my kids their
- 44:37immunizations. By golly, I was bellied up to the pediatrician. I believe
- 44:40in medical experts and what they're saying. One of the big pillars is community
- 44:45support and trust. We don't have community support and trust around this location.
- 44:52Because what I what I have here in my folder, I can show you
- 44:54the laundo list. A lot of residents are very, very concerned. And
- 45:00so when someone said last week to another council member, Amy Stalling, she
- 45:05doesn't want to vote on this, let's let's push it through it we've got
- 45:07to push it through. Well, that's a problem, folks, when you're
- 45:10saying let's push something through and you have people still saying, wait a minute,
- 45:14I want to meet, I want to ask questions. I've been talking
- 45:16about this issue for six years and people make it an issue listen. There
- 45:22are there are two sides, Goshi was there's probably moren't two sides to this
- 45:27day, different perspectives. Do I believe in any effort to get folks into
- 45:32recovery? Yeah, I want you to live. I do. I do.
- 45:36I want you to live. And I go back to when I watched
- 45:39my aunt and my mother stand over top of my first cousin, Michael,
- 45:44his casket, engineering student from w View, beautiful kid, beautiful kid,
- 45:50and got into an accident, was taking pain pills and then it spiraled out
- 45:55of control. Dude, I want to save his life. Yeah, And
- 45:59if you were stand here, you'd want you too. So we all come
- 46:00at it from a way different perspective, and I think we need to be
- 46:05respectful about that. Whatever your perspective is, we need to be respected.
- 46:08As of now, you're a no vote. I am right now, okay.

- 48:55This is the first time that you've been on since the allegations against police
- 48:59chief Time were made public. The chief was suspended for three days. We
- 49:01all know all the details. There are those now that want an independent investigation
- 49:07the way the city handled it. Your thoughts, well, there was an
- 49:10investigation that was handled. It was not only with our HR department, which
- 49:16was the most appropriate channel considering that chief is an appointed position. Listen,
- 49:24a lot of time and thought went into this. It was the one step
- 49:30before you literally show somebody the exit sign And this is what I feel good
- 49:36about. It was investigated. I know by the way it was investigated by
- 49:38the FBI, and I would encourage anybody to call them and to have a
- 49:44discussion with them. I feel very very confident about our actions about the investigation.
- 49:52What is really difficult when you're talking about an HR issue, Dave,
- 49:55is that I can't say very much. Our lawyers can't say very much.
- 50:00So when you say all the details of come, that's actually not true.
- 50:04It's not only because there are a lot of HR stuff that I am not
- 50:07permitted to talk about. And oh, by the way, you shouldn't want
- 50:10a mayor to do that, but the need to know from council members or
- 50:16folks who want to push this through. UM, this is this is not
- 50:21about this type of investigation. In my opinion, it's just a political a
- 50:25political push now, it's nothing more than nothing more than that, in my
- 50:30opinion. You think it's all political, I do. I mean, I
- 50:34hate it. You know, we're just talking to last segment. How you
- 50:36know politics and politics has always involved in policy for sure, Um, but
- 50:42to assail the integrity of our city manager, our city attorney, our chief
- 50:46of staff and myself is ridiculous. I mean, you'd ask questions, ask
- 50:51questions all day long, and we were open and transparent about the investigation,
- 50:55literally detailing our lawyer in a two page memo. Uh. And then the
- 51:01chiefs public comments about it. Uh. Listen, he has a long road
- 51:06to hoe. There is absolutely no question about it. Um. But we
- 51:12believe that we did absolutely everything with integrity uh and honesty, and so I
- 51:19always feel good about that. So what's going to happen That city council might
- 51:21because I've been resolution that folks will vote on up or down, okay,
- 51:25for for an independent investigation. Okay, yeah, And I don't even know
- 51:29what that means, I really, I mean I have it in front of
- 51:30me, but and I read it. But there there was one done.
- 51:34There was a there was an investigation that was done, and it was done
- 51:38including the FBI, and they found absolutely no abuse of power or anything that
- 51:45was nefarious in it. So I it's done. So if if the vote
- 51:51does, I know, we got to close outter but but but if the
- 51:52vote does come for an independent investigation, then forward, I got no problem,
- 52:00problem, no problem, all right, Mayor. It's always pleasure to
- 52:02have you here. It was good to see you too. I'm looking forward
- 52:06to see on Thursday. I'll be hey. I'll be the girl in the
