- 0:00Speaker 1: And it was a big deal for Rod Duke to
- 0:01Speaker 1: go public with his concerns about the country. Yesterday, the
- 0:04Speaker 1: managing director of Brisco's was announcing his company's full year result.
- 0:07Speaker 1: He did well, He held on to its revenue in
- 0:09Speaker 1: a difficult year. They are smart operators at Brisco's. They
- 0:12Speaker 1: can bring blood out of a stone, it seems. But
- 0:14Speaker 1: you know, it's not part of the job description for
- 0:16Speaker 1: the managing director to pass comment on the government of
- 0:19Speaker 1: the day, but he did, and he turned up on
- 0:21Speaker 1: Ryan Bridges' show. But it is symptomatic of today's climate
- 0:25Speaker 1: because we are desperate, We are sick of the doldrums.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We want our captain to lead our way out of
- 0:30Speaker 1: the quicksand so Rod, as a corporate leader and a
- 0:33Speaker 1: leader in society, said the government needs to get its
- 0:36Speaker 1: us into gear and do something. He said, it's been
- 0:39Speaker 1: a year since the last lot, so there's been more
- 0:41Speaker 1: than enough time to get proactive. But then when he
- 0:45Speaker 1: was asked, well what should they do, he said, well,
- 0:46Speaker 1: that's not my business. I just want them to get
- 0:48Speaker 1: their ars into gear. And that's kind of the New
- 0:50Speaker 1: Zealand problem right there. Because we're really good at identifying
- 0:53Speaker 1: problems but we're not good at finding the solutions, so
- 0:56Speaker 1: we moan about them all the time. Now, interestingly, yesterday
- 1:00Speaker 1: we had the IMF come out and they said that
- 1:03Speaker 1: New Zealand needs to lower its corporate tax because we
- 1:05Speaker 1: were becoming uncompetitive. But they also said we need a
- 1:10Speaker 1: capital gains tax because the country needs to balance its
- 1:13Speaker 1: budget and we don't have enough revenue. So they were
- 1:15Speaker 1: saying we need to spend, but we also need to
- 1:18Speaker 1: raise the revenue to spend. So the IMF ha come
- 1:21Speaker 1: up with an answer as the current government reducing corporate tax,
- 1:26Speaker 1: not so far. Meanwhile, is the Labor Party championing a
- 1:31Speaker 1: capital gains tax? Well, no, not so far either. Is
- 1:35Speaker 1: there any a party that's offering both, No, not so far.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So where are the solutions? But thank you so much
- 1:41Speaker 1: Rod Duke for telling us the problems. For more from
