- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We are here
- 0:02and it is our first episode of March. We have
- 0:05made it to month three. And so welcome back to
- 0:09Fostering Faith. If you are a return listener,
- 0:11we welcome you back home. We hope that these
- 0:14messages are inspiring you, encouraging you to
- 0:17dive into God's. Word. And if you are a new listener,
- 0:22welcome to Fostering Faith. We are here fostering
- 0:24our faith together as we walk through scripture
- 0:26together and we are better in communities. So
- 0:28this is why we're putting these podcasts out.
- 0:30We do want to remind you that we do have Word
- 0:32books now associated with each podcast. And so
- 0:36they are out on our website, fosteringfaithmedia
- 0:38.com. And so go check that stuff out there. We
- 0:41have a newsletter that's going to be out. And
- 0:44so sign up for that, put your email in and let's
- 0:46grow in Christ together. So something to me is
- 0:51so powerful. I think that we put labels on ourselves
- 0:55and I teach the kids this, I teach patients this,
- 0:59I try to teach myself this. And so in this episode,
- 1:02we're going to be calling it who God says we
- 1:05are, our identity in Christ. And so there's something
- 1:07powerful about knowing who you are, but something
- 1:10is more powerful about knowing who you are in
- 1:14Christ because identity is the foundation of
- 1:17everything that you do, your choices, your competence,
- 1:19your relationships, your purpose, your calling,
- 1:22the way that you pray, the way that you speak,
- 1:24the way that you lead. All of that flows from
- 1:27identity and an enemy knows this. And that's
- 1:30why the identity is one of the first areas that
- 1:33he will attack. The one the hardest hit areas
- 1:36is the one that we need to protect the hardest.
- 1:39And so if the devil can't destroy your calling,
- 1:42He'll try to distort your identity. He's there
- 1:45and He's going to try to ruin your purpose. He'll
- 1:49try to convince you that you're unworthy of it.
- 1:52If you can't stop the plan of God, He'll try
- 1:55to stop you from being the person of God. And
- 1:58He does that by whispering lies about who you
- 2:01are. So as we step into March, this whole month
- 2:04is going to be about the identity in Christ.
- 2:06And today we're going to be starting off with
- 2:08something foundational, something stable, something
- 2:11eternal. who God says you are, not who you were
- 2:15in your past, not who culture says that you are,
- 2:19not who your family say that you are, not your
- 2:22insecurities and not what other people say you
- 2:25are, but who God says you are. And there's nothing
- 2:28more stabilizing when we're hearing God's voice
- 2:32over your life. And there's nothing more dangerous
- 2:34than living from a false identity, because whatever
- 2:38you don't know who you are, you will settle for
- 2:40anything. You will accept any label. You will
- 2:43believe any lie. You will shrink when God is
- 2:46calling you to stand and you will compare yourself
- 2:48to everyone else because you're not anchored
- 2:52in who God has designed you to be. An identity
- 2:55is not something for you to discover. It's something
- 2:58God reveals. You don't create your identity.
- 3:01You receive it. You don't decide who you are.
- 3:04You discover who God already declared you to
- 3:07be. You're given identity before you were even
- 3:10given a breath. And when you're spoken over,
- 3:14before you were spoken to, you were named before
- 3:19you were born. In Psalm 139, God says, I knit
- 3:23you together in your mother's womb. He didn't
- 3:26mass produce you. He handcrafted you. He intentionally
- 3:29designed you. Your personality, your wiring,
- 3:32your strengths, your creativity, the way that
- 3:34your mind works. The way that your heart feels
- 3:37deeply, the way that you see the world and none
- 3:39of it's random is divine architecture. And have
- 3:43you guys ever knitted? I've never knitted, but
- 3:45I've crocheted and just the intricacy and my
- 3:49aunt who knitted like doilies and like signs
- 3:52and stuff like that and just the integral parts
- 3:55of it. And my dad was a woodworker back in the
- 3:58day and he would make these plaques and these
- 4:02wedding plaques and They were so intricate and
- 4:06so delicate. And so if a human can make something
- 4:09so perfectly designed and thought out, just think
- 4:15how much effort and time and detail that God
- 4:19put into you. Just how He knit every cell, every
- 4:22structure, every part. If you understand the
- 4:25biology of how the human body works, it is literally
- 4:28amazing. And let me tell you something that the
- 4:31enemy never wants you to realize. You are not
- 4:34who you used to be. You are who God says that
- 4:38you are. Your past does not define your identity.
- 4:40Your trauma does not define your identity. Your
- 4:43mistakes are not your identity. Your weaknesses
- 4:45are not your identity. The worst days are not
- 4:49your identity. Who you are in God created, redeemed,
- 4:54called, empowered is who you are. And scripture
- 4:59is full of identity statements, not about what
- 5:02you do, but about who you are. And so listen
- 5:05to this. You are chosen, Ephesians 1 .4. You
- 5:10are loved, Jeremiah 31 .3. You are forgiven,
- 5:14Colossians 1 .14. You are redeemed, Ephesians
- 5:181 .7. You are God's masterpiece, Ephesians 2
- 5:22.10. And you are a child of God, John 1 .12.
- 5:26You are a new creation, 2 Corinthians 5, 17.
- 5:30You are strengthened, Philippians 4, 13. You
- 5:33are set apart, 1 Peter 2, 9. You are free, John
- 5:388, 36. You are called, 2 Timothy 1, 9. You are
- 5:43protected, Psalm 91. You are empowered, Acts
- 5:471, 8. You are known, Psalm 139. You are sealed
- 5:52with the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1, 13. and you
- 5:56are never alone. Deuteronomy 31, 6. Identity
- 6:01is not insecurity talking. Identity is not culture
- 6:04talking. Identity is not fear talking. Identity
- 6:07is God talking. And everything God says about
- 6:10you is stable, eternal, and unchanging truth.
- 6:15I think that we get into culture and we say,
- 6:17oh, it's your truth. It's this truth. The truth
- 6:21is scripture. The truth is what God said. There
- 6:24is nothing that He has said that is not true.
- 6:26It is truth. But here's the tension. Even though
- 6:29God declares these things over us, many believers
- 6:32still live in insecurity, fear, self -doubt,
- 6:37imposter syndrome, and comparison. Why? Why do
- 6:41we do this to ourselves? Because what God says
- 6:44about us and what we believe about ourselves
- 6:48don't always match. And spiritual maturity is
- 6:51the process of being and your identity, bringing
- 6:55your identity into agreement with heaven. Identity
- 6:58is not a feeling. It's a declaration. It's sometimes
- 7:02you had to declare the truth before you feel
- 7:04the truth. You may not feel competent, but you
- 7:08are chosen. You may not feel strong, but you
- 7:11are empowered. You may not feel worthy, but you
- 7:14are redeemed. You may not feel loved, but you
- 7:17are deeply loved. And you may not feel enough,
- 7:21but God has called you his masterpiece. And listen,
- 7:25the enemy knows scripture better than you do.
- 7:27He knows exactly what God speaks over your life.
- 7:30And that's why he works overtime to contradict
- 7:33it. The enemy will attack your identity with
- 7:36lies, labels, comparison, insecurity, fear, shame,
- 7:42doubt, voices of your past people, memories of
- 7:46old seasons, the opinions of strangers, and the
- 7:50pressure to perform. And the fear? a failure.
- 7:54Satan never attacks who you are not. He attacks
- 7:57who you are. He attacks the area of the greatest
- 8:01spiritual potential. He hits on your confidence.
- 8:04It's because you're called to lead. He hits your
- 8:07voice because you're meant to speak. He's been
- 8:11hitting your mind because you are anointed to
- 8:13think with clarity. If he's hitting your worth,
- 8:16it's because you're positioned for purpose. Identity
- 8:21attacks always reveal identity assignments. So
- 8:24let's talk about something practical. Identity
- 8:27in Christ is not just spiritual. It's lived out.
- 8:31It shows up in your decisions. It shows up in
- 8:33the way that you respond to things. It shows
- 8:35up in who you let speak into your life. It shows
- 8:40up when you pay close attention. It shows up
- 8:44on the way that you pray. It shows up in the
- 8:46way that you walk into a room. It shows up in
- 8:48the way that you handle conflict, and it shows
- 8:51up in the standards you set. When you know who
- 8:54you are, you stop apologizing for it. A child
- 8:59of God does not shrink. A chosen person does
- 9:03not compare. A forgiven person does not stay
- 9:06stuck in shame. A loved person does not chase
- 9:10love in unhealthy places. A cold person does
- 9:13not belittle their purpose. A masterpiece does
- 9:16not compare. with copies. Someone walking in
- 9:19identity does not let insecurity narrate their
- 9:22story. Identity is freedom. But I want to go
- 9:27a little bit deeper. Identity is not about self
- 9:30-esteem. Identity is about sound doctrine. Your
- 9:34identity is built on theology and not feelings.
- 9:38God says who you are. Full stop. You cannot bargain
- 9:43with it. You cannot edit it. You cannot rewrite
- 9:46it. You can only come into agreement with it.
- 9:50When the prodigal son returned home in Luke 15,
- 9:53he rehearsed a whole speech, I am no longer worthy,
- 9:56just make me a servant. He had adopted the identity
- 9:59of Shane. He was ready to downgrade himself,
- 10:03but the father interrupted him and the father
- 10:05said, bring the robe, bring the ring, bring the
- 10:09men's sandals and kill the thighted calf. Why?
- 10:13Because the son didn't get to choose who he was.
- 10:16The father did. Identity is based on who the
- 10:19father is. It's not who the child feels like
- 10:23he is. And let me tell you something. You can't
- 10:27outperform your identity. You can't overfill
- 10:30your identity. You can't outrun your identity.
- 10:33You can only reject it or receive it. Which are
- 10:37we going to pick? Are you going to reject what
- 10:38God has called you to do? Are you going to deny
- 10:41your blessings that he's poured upon you? Are
- 10:45you going to open your hands and say, I receive
- 10:49it. I receive what you've put in me. Open my
- 10:52eyes. And so for some of you listening right
- 10:54now, the Holy Spirit is pulling you back into
- 10:57alignment. Remember who you are. I think it was
- 11:01on Malayan King, whenever Moose Basa was talking
- 11:04to Simba. Remember whose you are. You are living
- 11:08like a rejected person when God has called you
- 11:11chosen. You're living like an orphan when God
- 11:13has called you His child. You're living like
- 11:16someone unloved when God's called you dearly
- 11:18loved. And you're living like someone without
- 11:21purpose when heaven is holding your calling with
- 11:24both hands. Your reflection question this week
- 11:29that's in the workbook is, Who does God say I
- 11:33am? And what part of it Do I struggle to believe?
- 11:38Sit with that. Let the Holy Spirit show you your
- 11:42identity gap because healing happens in that
- 11:46place, in the quiet, at His feet. And so we hope
- 11:52that this message encouraged you. We hope that
- 11:54this message opened your eyes to whose you are.
- 11:58and that you are loved, that you are redeemed,
- 12:01that you are chosen, that you're forgiven, that
- 12:03you're a masterpiece, that you're a child of
- 12:05God, that you're a new creation, that you are
- 12:06strengthened, that you are set apart, that you
- 12:08are free, that you are called, that you are protected,
- 12:10that you are empowered, that you are known, that
- 12:12you are sealed with the Holy Spirit, and that
- 12:14you are never alone. And the enemy is going to
- 12:18come after you with lies and labels and comparison,
- 12:20insecurities, fear, shame, and doubt, voices
- 12:24and memories and opinions and pressure to perform.
- 12:27and fear of failure. But we're gonna say, you
- 12:31know what? My God's already defeated you. My
- 12:34dad already beat you. I will not listen to you.
- 12:37My God said this. And that's why it's so important
- 12:39for scripture to be written on your heart and
- 12:42for you to know what scripture is. And how do
- 12:44you know it? You read it, you spend time with
- 12:45it. Whenever that timer goes off on your TikTok
- 12:48and that you've already had your two hour limit,
- 12:50don't escape it. Once your hour is up, go spend
- 12:53it in scripture. Write it on your heart. And
- 12:56for those living in other parts of the country,
- 12:58in the USA, we're able to have these Bibles.
- 13:00It's such a blessing to be able to have, I have
- 13:02three Bibles sitting in front of me now, just
- 13:04to be able to turn the scripture, the pages.
- 13:07And just like that song that was out, we have
- 13:09desks on our Bibles, but we have brand new iPhones.
- 13:11Yes, you could have the YouVersion Bible app.
- 13:13Yes, there's so many different apps that are
- 13:14on the phone, but are you using them? Are you
- 13:17using them to build and to remember who He said
- 13:20that you are? This book is alive. He knows what
- 13:23you need and He will turn scripture in. and you
- 13:26could have read it a hundred times and you really
- 13:28feel like he had came in there in the middle
- 13:30of the night and just re -changed what that verse
- 13:33said because you've read it before but this book
- 13:34is alive and it is breathing and it is his breath
- 13:38and it's just so exciting to see how he communicates
- 13:41because he will use all the different things
- 13:45just to make sure that you are aware that you
- 13:47are loved and that you are seen and so we hope
- 13:49this message encourages you if it did share it
- 13:52like it Make sure that you're going to the website
- 13:54and getting those workbooks. Maybe turn into
- 13:56a small group session. Send it to a friend. And
- 13:59so we would love to pray for over you. Dear Heavenly
- 14:01Father, thank you so much for these listeners.
- 14:03Thank you so much for declaring who we are before
- 14:05the world ever had a chance to label us. Thank
- 14:08you for reminding us of our identity. Thank you
- 14:11for showing us that lives that we believe. Thank
- 14:14you that you're breaking off every false label.
- 14:16Thank you that you're bringing our identity into
- 14:18alignment with heaven. Thank you for the help.
- 14:20to live boldly as your sons and daughters. We
- 14:24pray this in Jesus' name. Amen and amen. So your
- 14:27action set this week matches your workbook. Write
- 14:30down the five things that God says about you
- 14:32and declare them out loud every day. And identity
- 14:37grows with repetition. We hope you have a great
- 14:40week. We love you guys. Bye.
