- 1:53be announced today, So listen now. While New post war Old Dutch Cleanser,
- 1:57famous for chasing dirt, present Nick Carter, famous for chasing crime every
- 2:09week. At this time, two great names adjoined as New postwar Old Dutch
- 2:14Cleanser brings you one of the most resourceful and daring characters in all detective fiction,
- 2:19Nick Carter, Master Detective Nick. I'm getting cramped hiding under the stask.
- 2:30Do you really think he's coming? Fifty dollars is pretty tempting fate,
- 2:34They sounded plenty interested over the phone. Look, we only had a light
- 2:38in here. Media Life, someone's forcing the window all type Bessy's I think
- 2:44that's our man. And now the Case of the Last Old Timer. Today's
- 2:53adventure starring Long Clark as Nick Carter, brought to you by New postwar Old
- 2:57Dutch Cleanser. If you ask Waldo McGlenn, crime isn't what it used to
- 3:01be, No, sir, give Walldo the good old days when Nick's father,
- 3:07Sim Carter was one of the country's leading detectives and his right hand man
- 3:13was Wallo McGlenn. Those were the days when crime was crime. But today
- 3:20at Knick's office, Waldo's audience isn't very attentive because Nick is inspecting a new
- 3:24camera and Patsy is finishing some letters, but Waldo still holds forth on his
- 3:30favorite subject. Hey tell you, Nick boy, we had real criminals in
- 3:35them days. You didn't catch them fellows by using a microscope and a lie
- 3:38detector. No, Suria had to stand up anything else? Oh? I
- 3:44know, thanks, Patsy. You know where the fast lands like this,
- 3:47I couet down here, take pictures in the dark. Gone, Patsy.
- 3:51I wish you wouldn't interrupt me. No, I forget what I would saying.
- 3:55No, sir, you had to stand up and shoot it out,
- 3:59shoot first, next questions. That's the way we were. I did say
- 4:02all that will not hut anyway. But you were going to Oh I know
- 4:08that routine by heart, Waldo, I've heard it, so all right to
- 4:12laugh forehead, But you'll find out I'm right, and before long too.
- 4:16You know who got out of sing sing this week? No, Nitro Nelson,
- 4:20that's who, the king of the safe crackers. Oh yes, I
- 4:24heard my father talk about him. You're sure your old man and me shut
- 4:28it out with Nitro and his pal Dan Brinkley after they pulled that cod security
- 4:31job and killed the night watchman. Par I thought they got the chair for
- 4:34that, Waldo. Only Dan Brinkley was executed. Nitro testified against him and
- 4:39got off with a life sentence, and they were released in this week.
- 4:42Yep, paroled after seven twenty five years. So Nick, you better look
- 4:46out for the biggest crime wave this old town has seen for many a day.
- 4:49Well, I doubt whether Nitro is much of a menace anymore, wald
- 4:53No, boy must be past seventy. Well, so what he still knows
- 4:57more about cracking us safe than all these modern year biggs put together. And
- 5:00just give him a Flaska nitro glycery and here wo, those methods are out
- 5:04of date. Modern safs can't be cracked as easily as those old timers.
- 5:09Okay, okay, you just wait and see, all right, Waldo,
- 5:13I promised to call on you the very first time I got a case involving
- 5:15a blown safe. Nick Carter speaking hello. This is Corneus Jones of Jones,
- 5:30Fisher and Caroline. Oh yes, mister Jones, somebody broke into our
- 5:34offices here at the factory last night. Murder the night watchman got away with
- 5:39that payroll. Well, have you notified the police? Well, of course,
- 5:41but we'd like to have you on the case too. Would you help
- 5:44us out? Okay, I'll be out there thirty minutes, mister Jones blended.
- 5:46Oh, by the way, where was the money in a safe?
- 5:48Of course it was the stief got it by blowing the door of the state
- 5:53clear off its hinges. What did I chan you, nick boy? What
- 6:03did I change your one case? Doesn't make a crime wave? Walk just
- 6:08to see you have the camera, haven't I sure have? Well, here's
- 6:12mister Jones's office corner where a horse. I'll take two sets of this two
- 6:18S two model. I want to deliver as soon as possible. I'll have
- 6:21them for you inside of a week. Mister Jones Jones, I'm Nick cart
- 6:26come in, thank you. This is my secretary, Miss Bowen. Hello,
- 6:29mister Johnes, you do, and my assistant mister Waldo. Wellow wishes
- 6:31mc glenn. You meet mister Lewis at the Hercules Safe Company. Hercules Safe
- 6:38Company, you investigating the robbery to whom No, No, I'm a salesman,
- 6:42not a detective. I just sold mister Jones two of our latest models,
- 6:46one for the factory here and one for the downtown office. We should
- 6:48sold them to me before this thing happened last night. You can't see I
- 6:50didn't try, mister Jones. Pardon me, mister Jones. Would you mind
- 6:55showing me where the safe is? I'd like to take a few pictures,
- 6:57pictures. Yes, I'm testing a new camera with a special lens for a
- 7:00detailed work. Say that's quite a camera on, mister Carta. I mean
- 7:02I see it. Certainly help yourself. I've read about these, but this
- 7:06is the first one I've ever seen. Wow, f one four lens.
- 7:12That's unusual, Belly. I'd like to have one of these. Yeah,
- 7:15well, you get those move safes here by Saturday. I'll buy a roll
- 7:17of film notes. They'll be here. Mister Jones, Come on, cut
- 7:20up, I'll show you whether I took price. You can get all the
- 7:24pictures you want. We where's the safe, mister cutter. At least it's
- 7:35been over everything. Of course, that is an old fashioned safe, I'll
- 7:39say it is modern safe. Couldn't have been blown open so easily, think
- 7:43Muster. He's nitro glacieran too. See where he plugged up the cracks for
- 7:46soap let me take him. No, look me boy, Yeah, go
- 7:48ahead, Walter, go ahead. And mister Jones, where was the night
- 7:50Watchman's body found? We're just outside in the curtain. He was shut you
- 7:55janetor found him when he opened up this morning. Nick, boy, this
- 7:58is one of Nitro's jobs. If I ever saw one, Walder, you
- 8:01got Nael Nelson on the brain. I know what I'm talking about, Patsy.
- 8:05In the old days, we could recognize the work of every big time
- 8:09safe cracker in the business. Well, if you're right, Waller, we'll
- 8:11find out pretty soon. I see the police have been dusting for fingerprinss and
- 8:13it looks as though they've found plenty. Yeah, Allison's for through here.
- 8:18We'll go down to headquarters and check with Maddy. I'm waiting for a report
- 8:30on those fingerprints now, Nick, and when it gets here, you'll find
- 8:33out. I'm right, Matty. Oh yeah, this takes me back twenty
- 8:37five years. Nightro killed the night watchman on that job too. According to
- 8:41court records, his partner killed him. You could never make me believe that
- 8:46Dan Brinkley wasn't the killer type, but nightlose Warden did it. In the
- 8:50court believed him. No, were you with the trial wader shoe shoe?
- 8:52Nick I had to testify. Oh yeah, I remember how Sonny I felt
- 8:56for Dan's wife and kid when the judge passed the death said, this is
- 9:01funny. Why their faces keep sticking in my mind the way they do?
- 9:05Oh that's probably they report Nick Sergeant Mathison homicide. Yeah, uh, huh
- 9:13okay Peterson, thanks, old though, I gotta give you credit. Huh
- 9:18you sure call the turn this time? What you mean those were nightro and
- 9:22Nelson's fingerprints, Maddy, as plain as day? What did I tell you?
- 9:26In spite of his age, The old boy must be pretty spry to
- 9:28pull a job as neat as that one. And you, mark my words,
- 9:33this is only the beginning, Nick boy. You're up against a real
- 9:37crooked this time. Jna Tatsier doesn't seem possible. Three more safe robberiesn't five
- 9:50days, and all of them exactly like the first night Joe Nelson, Nick
- 9:54boy, Just like I told, I can't argue with you anymore. Waldo,
- 9:58I found his finger print on every safe. I can't even get a
- 10:01lead on him today. Niral left prison. He must have gone directly to
- 10:05some hideous I know, Patsy and now, but where where? You know?
- 10:09Ever since we saw that first safety blue, I've had a feeling that
- 10:13there's there's something I ought to remember. Something in my mind keeps going back
- 10:18to the courtroom twenty five years ago. When you remember what it is,
- 10:20let me know. Although he gave us the right stair the first time,
- 10:24maybe you can do it again. And mister Carter, when I opened up
- 10:37the office this morning, this is what I've found. H huh. A
- 10:41crack safe with the door blown right off its hind and almost forty thousand dollars
- 10:46in negotiable secure is gone. Where's the window open as it is now,
- 10:48mister Harris Here nothing's been touched, but Nick, this is the top floor.
- 10:52Whatever cracked that safe couldn't have got in through the window. Nobody could
- 10:56have lowered himself down from the roof with a rope. In fact, Miss
- 10:58Pawling, it's the only way he could have got by our watchman without being
- 11:01seen. That'll be quite a trick for a seventy five year old man,
- 11:05not for nightro Nelson. Nick, you know, if he'd only waited till
- 11:09next week, we'll have our new safe installed. I'll bet not even he
- 11:13could crack that. Hey, that's it? What is it? Nick?
- 11:18What does this look like to you? It's I'm not here on the floor
- 11:20in front of the safe. Why it looks like a bit of jelasin That's
- 11:24what I thought, sheelaton. I think we finally hear on something. Boy,
- 11:31I got it what I was trying to remember. But I ain't sure,
- 11:35So let me work it out on my own. Well, shouldn't you
- 11:37tell next of the two of you can work it out together. Nope,
- 11:39I got to do this myself. Just give me twenty four hours, Nick,
- 11:43and if I don't find Nitro's hideout, then I'll tell you. Okay,
- 11:46Well, oh all right, all right, Waller, but big care
- 11:50Sure, I'll be careful. But I caught that old son of a gun
- 11:52once and I can do it again. Matty flashed that enlargement of the fingerprints
- 12:05on the screen again. Will Okay, Nick, But what's the use It's
- 12:09exactly the same as the Prince of Nitros we have on file. Sure it
- 12:13is no question about it. I know, I know. But yeah,
- 12:18every world, every loop, every ridge is there? What's bothering, Younique?
- 12:24I'm looking for something that isn't there something that isn't there? Oh?
- 12:30Just a minute, Sergeant mathieson homicide. Where's that three four seven Hillside Road?
- 12:37Eh? How long ago? Okay, I'll run out and have a
- 12:41look. Yeah, I'll leave right away, okay, Thompson trouble. Yeah,
- 12:46somebody found a dead body in the cellar of an old house out on
- 12:48Hillside Road. You want to come along, Nick, All right, Matty,
- 12:52I can finish up here and we get back. Come on, Betty.
- 13:03The body down in the basement, sergeant this way. How did you
- 13:07happen to find it? Mister Wilkins, It was out in my backyard when
- 13:11I heard a shot. I lived in the next house down the road.
- 13:13Yeah. And then a minute later I saw somebody run out of here carrying
- 13:16a suitcase. He jumped into a car and beat it fast. So I
- 13:20came over to see what was up or the door unlocked? Yes, it
- 13:24was wide open. Well, I thought that was funny. So I kept
- 13:28looking around, and finally I found this dead man in the cellar. You
- 13:31didn't move him, did you know. I just looked from the top of
- 13:35the steps and I run and called you. This the basement door. Yeah,
- 13:41he right at the bottom of the steps. See there is good grief.
- 13:52It look right, Scott. It's wood At the foot of the cellistairs
- 14:01in a deserted cottage, Nick's whole friend and assistant, Waldo McGlynn, lies
- 14:05stretched out with a bullet hole in his chest. Now back to the case
- 14:13of the Last Old Timer. Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by
- 14:16new post war old Dutch cleanser. Sergeant Matheson took Nick and Patsy with him
- 14:20to investigate her report that the body had been found in the basement of the
- 14:24cottage on Hillside Road, only to discover that the man who is shot is
- 14:28Nick's old friend and assistant, Waldo McGlynn. A few minutes later, Well,
- 14:33I managed to stop the bleeding. At least, I'm afraid he doesn't
- 14:35have much of a chance. He made. Won' let ambulance be here any
- 14:37minute. Down I suppose Warder was following that clue he spoke about when it
- 14:41too Probably I wish now i'd made him tell me just what it was.
- 14:43Even if he recovers, it'll be days before he can tell us what happened.
- 14:46And Nick, there's something over here. I'd like to show you if
- 14:48you can leave Waldo for a minute. All right, all right, Maddy,
- 14:50there's nothing more to be done until the ambulance arrives. Anyway, what
- 14:54I said here behind this partition, take a look, but there was a
- 15:00Yeah, four old fashioned safe at least one has the door blown up the
- 15:03hinges. What do you know, mister Wilkins? Yes, you know who
- 15:07lives in this cottage? Well, yes, I owned the place and about
- 15:13months ago I rendered it to an old man named triplet An old man,
- 15:16how old? Why? He must have been seventy seventy five, hard boiled
- 15:22old gentoo. But I felt like one of those gangsters in the movies.
- 15:24Yeah, see, Nick, it was Nitro. This is the height out
- 15:26we've been looking for. Well, how about those four saves, mister Wilkins.
- 15:31Did they belong to you too? Now I never saw him before.
- 15:33How well did you get to know this mister Triplett. Well I didn't get
- 15:37to know him at all. Back, jeez, I haven't even seen him
- 15:41since you rendered the place. Hey, Nick, I've been looking at those
- 15:45safes, eh. You know only three of them were blown open, the
- 15:46doors wide open on the fourth. But it's not damage. I noticed that
- 15:50too matter. Probably the fourth one was used to store the loot from the
- 15:54robberies. Why would he have four says and then blast three of them open?
- 15:56I was practicing, Patsy. He look attempts to get this first one
- 16:00open. It was still a clumsy job, yeah, but the technique was
- 16:03better on this next safe. He did a perfect job on the third one.
- 16:07I get it. After twenty five years in jail, the old man
- 16:11had to do a little practicing in order to get back his scale. Go
- 16:15over here, Maddie, Yeah, okay, butt dark in this corner.
- 16:18I did you find something else? Throw the light down here on the dirt
- 16:22floor. Okay, hey, you see what I mean. Yeah, the
- 16:27dirt isn't packed down as hard as it is, and the rest of the
- 16:30sell to get some men out here. Start digging right what porn? Nick
- 16:33wouldn't be surprised if they find the body of Nitron Nelson. I careful boy
- 16:48has left him out easy. Why that's mister Tripper, the old man who
- 16:52rented my house. Maybe he would mister Tripper to you, Wilkins, but
- 16:56he was Nitro Nelson to the police. But nickd can't be Nitrol. Look
- 16:59at the body at mys have been buried there for at least a week,
- 17:00perhaps even longer, Maddy, But it's still Nitril. That's impossible, Nick.
- 17:04Those robberies started less than a week ago, and you know Nitro did
- 17:08them. You found his fingerprints on every safe. Yeah, and fingerprints don't
- 17:12long. Well if they're not lying this time out of the only answer is
- 17:15that the robberies are committed by a ghost. And you don't believe in ghosts,
- 17:18do you? Nick, Please give with some answers. How did Nitro's
- 17:33fingerprints get on those safes after he was dead? Well, Patsy, you
- 17:37know what happens when you develop photographic films only in a general way? Why,
- 17:41Well, film is covered with a thin layer of sensitized gelatine. Yes,
- 17:44I know that much. Okay, Then when the film's put in a
- 17:47developer, the developer turns the exposed part of that gelatine black and it eats
- 17:52away the unexposed part. Go ahead, I'm still with you. I suppose
- 17:55a photograph of a fingerprint were printed on a very thick layer of that gelatine,
- 18:00and they were left in an extra strong developer until all the white spaces
- 18:03between the ridges were eaten. Away as deeply as they say, a thirty
- 18:08second of an inch. Why I suppose the black part the ridges of the
- 18:12fingerprint would stand out like a rubber stamp, exactly, Spatsy, like a
- 18:18rubber stamp made out of gelatin. And somebody took a photograph of Nitro's fingerprints
- 18:22and made one of those gelatin rubber stamp things out of it. Yes see,
- 18:26I began to wonder when I found that bit of gelatin on the floor
- 18:29by the safe in Harris's office. Must have broken off when he put the
- 18:32princes there. Then, when we enlarged the prints at headquarters, just know
- 18:36I was sure. Yes, you said you were looking for something that wasn't
- 18:41there. What did you mean, Patsy. There have pores in all human
- 18:45skin, but not in gelatine. No matter how much we enlarge those prints,
- 18:49there wasn't a single poor mark. That's why I'm sure the fingerprints were
- 18:53faked. All right, so we know Nitro didn't rob those safes, But
- 18:57who did? I want you to phone all the companies that have been robbed
- 19:00after we've made those calls. I think that'll give us the answer to your
- 19:04question. Hello, hello Lewis. Yes, this is Cornelius Jones of Jones
- 19:18Fish and Carowin. Oh, yes, mister Jones, how about those two
- 19:21safes I ordered from your company? Yes? Could you possibly deliver one of
- 19:22them this afternoon? I'm afraid not, mister Jones, but I've got over
- 19:26fifty thousand dollars in cash and securities here that just came in, and the
- 19:30banks are closed for the day. Now all we have is that old safe
- 19:33in our downtown office. I don't trust that anymore. I'm sorry, mister
- 19:37Jones. That old safe will have to do until tomorrow night. But before
- 19:41then I'll take care of everything. That's a promise me. Do you already
- 19:55think he's coming fifty dollars? It is pretty tempting bait and es he's founded
- 20:00by interested over the phone. We only had listen. Someone's forting the window
- 20:07aside, Betsy, I think that's our man. All right, don't move,
- 20:17I've got a gun on you. Who the gun on? Lights?
- 20:18Bets right? You're right he is, mister Lewis, Yes, that perhaps
- 20:23he'd rather recall mister Brinkley. So you know, do you? I do?
- 20:27Your father was Dan Brinkley, wasn't he? Yes, Dan Brinkley,
- 20:30the man Nitro Nelson sensed the electric chair for a killing he did himself.
- 20:33That's what Walder was trying to remember. Waler was at Brinkley's trial, and
- 20:37he recalled the resemblance between you and your father. Yeah, who's Waldo.
- 20:41He's next assistant, the man who trails you out of the cottage, the
- 20:44man you shot Brinkley and he may die. Well, what did you expect
- 20:47me to do? He ran down the stairs waving a gun and yelling for
- 20:49me to give up Shore. I shut him. Then I grabbed the stuff
- 20:52out of the safe and beat it. Well you're not going to beat it
- 20:53this time. I'm not. You think I'm going to the chair like my
- 20:57father did. You don't have any choice. No, Well, look at
- 21:00what I've got in my hand. What have you got in that bottle?
- 21:04Nitro glycerin' sister? You take a shot at me, Carter, and we'll
- 21:08all be blown into a million pieces. Oh, put that gun away.
- 21:11You won't get away even if I do. Brinkley, this whole place is
- 21:15surrounded. Is the end of the line for you? Okay, then it's
- 21:18the end of the line for all of us. With all his force,
- 21:30Brinkley hurls the bottle of nitroglycerin directly at Ncoln Patsy, preferring to die with
- 21:33them rather than be capturing. We'll see what happens in just a moment.
- 21:41Now for the conclusion of the case of the Last Old Timer. Today's adventure
- 21:45with Nick Carter brought to you by new post war old Dutch cleanser. Nick
- 21:49and Patsy trapped George Brinkley as he was about to blow open the safe of
- 21:53Jones, Fisher and Caraway. But Brinkley holds a bottle of nitroglycerin above his
- 21:57head and says, OK, this is the end of the line for all
- 22:00of them on the grave. You, Brinkley, stop climpering. They're going
- 22:10to be any explosion, no petty. When they threw the bottle, I
- 22:15managed to catch it. We're still lucky I didn't explode. Oh brother,
- 22:22I never want to do that again. Hey do I Well, come on,
- 22:26Brinkley, I want you to meet an old friend of mine, Sergeant
- 22:30Mathieson of homicide. Nikki, are sure it's all right for us to see
- 22:41world today? The nurse that he was conscious and asking for it. Oh?
- 22:48Hell gosh, I'm glad to see you tell you save companies. He's
- 22:59Dan Brinkley's a new trail into that cottage on Hillside Road, misshot we know
- 23:03all about it. Wardough, we caught Brinkley last night. You'd how well
- 23:07to begin with, I couldn't believe a man Ncro's age could pull those jobs,
- 23:11pulling more. I figured those jobs were pulled by someone who knew where
- 23:15there were old fashioned safes that could be blown open by nitros out of date
- 23:18methods. So when two of the victims mentioned buying new safe nick, they
- 23:22did that a safe salesman trying to sell them new ones would know all this.
- 23:26And it didn't take long to find out that Brinkley or Lewis had called
- 23:29on all the Daniels. Sure, when I discovered the secret of the thorny
- 23:32fingerprints, I remembered Brinkley's interest in photography. Geography, How does that fall?
- 23:38We'll tell your later WARLDO after your field, Dad. It's enough right
- 23:41now to tell you that Brinkley's mother brought him up hating Nitro Nelson. So
- 23:45when Nitro got out of jail, Brinkley was there to meet him, and
- 23:48Nitro didn't recognize him. That's why he agreed to teach him his methods of
- 23:52safe cracking four thousand dollars, but after Brinkley learned the technique, he strangled
- 23:56the old man buried him in the cellar of the cottage. It wasn't night
- 24:00shore that blew them safe after all. Sorry to disappoint you, Waldo,
- 24:04And you can credit the younger generation for those jobs. And that's why you're
- 24:10good and so easy. In my day, you had to stand up and
- 24:14shoot it out, shoot first and ask questions afterwards. That's the way we
- 24:18were all one. Laugh well. And now the winners of the four nineteen

- 25:41next week we're going to look for a piece of rope that's right when
- 25:45you can buy in any hardware store for a dollar or two. And yet
- 25:48two murders were committed because somebody wanted it, Yes, and after the killer
- 25:52got his hands on it, he didn't want it anymore, so he gave
- 25:55it away. Well, this all sounds very mysterious. What's the name of
- 25:57the story? Nick? I call it The Haste of the Magic Rope?

- 28:00Welcome back, uh, Poor Waldo gets to the right place, quite
- 28:07a ways ahead of Nick, and even almost gets himself killed in the process
- 28:11and still gets made fun of it the end. I honestly do have some
- 28:17mixed feelings on this story. For one thing, I think that the true
- 28:22identity of the criminal was tipped early on with the new safes coming in that
- 28:30basically seemed pretty obvious that he would be the one involved. I also thought
- 28:37the resolution to the cliffhanger was really effie. It was certainly pretty interesting in
- 28:45a typical Nick Carter situation, but no cleverness or anything that's usually associated with
- 28:52these with these solutions, just basically Nick Carter using his amazing powers to stop
- 29:00this. So yeah, not one of my favorites. But again, I
- 29:04think a pretty interesting premise, and it was nice to see Waldo at least
- 29:10headed in the right direction throughout the story. All right, well, that
- 29:14will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny
- 29:18Doller, and then next Thursday it's another case with the Master Detective Nick Carter.
