Transcript
- 0:01Hi, and welcome to the Seated podcast with Furniture Row.
- 0:04I'm Jessa, creative director and design extraordinaire, and I'm
- 0:08Barb, interior designer and buyer.
- 0:13Hi everyone, welcome back to Seeded.
- 0:15Today we're here with Cosi of only plants and he's going to
- 0:21talk to us about the well-being and, and all of the things that
- 0:25make living with plants just better for you and just a great
- 0:31environment to have plants around you.
- 0:33So talk to us about Only plants. Tell us who you are, how you
- 0:37started. Only Plants.
- 0:39OK, my name is Cosi. How do you spell that OSSII
- 0:44love? That you're plant daddy cosy,
- 0:48right? Yeah.
- 0:49Is that how? You.
- 0:49Yeah. Plant Daddy.
- 0:50Yeah. Yeah, I started with House
- 0:54plants about five years ago digitally.
- 0:57I used to be a franchise consultant for RE/MAX and so I
- 1:02used to coach franchise owners and one of the aspects of it was
- 1:07brand development. When I built it, I chose a hobby
- 1:10at the time. I had about 30 house plants at
- 1:12the time. Five years ago?
- 1:14Five years ago? How many do you have now?
- 1:16I have nearly 400 house plants today Yes and so I started
- 1:23creating content on house plants, implementing the same
- 1:26strategy and I lot while I lost the bet and I had to start
- 1:33introducing myself as plan Daddy coast.
- 1:35So it's like, hey, TikTok, this is your favorite plan Dad plan
- 1:38Daddy coast. So that started becoming my
- 1:41Internet. Dad took all of these plants.
- 1:44Yeah, 300 plants. Yeah.
- 1:47So got into that and eventually it just kind of really stuck.
- 1:52And then it became a whole different personality that
- 1:55started off as something that I just enjoyed.
- 1:58And so plants became a really, really big part of my life all
- 2:02around outside of just in the design aspect and everything.
- 2:07And so Fast forward I've done that, create content full time,
- 2:13left corporate about four months ago.
- 2:18About four months ago, I had a random DM from Finn.
- 2:23Finn owns Finn Studios inside the Dairy Block at the free
- 2:27market and he DM me and he said hey tell.
- 2:30Us about dairy block for those that don't know what dairy
- 2:33block? Is the Dairy Block is probably
- 2:35one of the best, kind of one of the best blocks in Denver.
- 2:40Yeah, I say it's one of the best blocks in Denver solely because
- 2:43you have a mix of so many different types of businesses
- 2:48where they're they're a lot of small businesses, a lot of just
- 2:54creative, you know, restaurants like Brutal, for example, is a
- 2:59Michelin star restaurant, but it's got this like dark vibe,
- 3:03you know. Is that the place that has like
- 3:05a Bigfoot in it? Like a big fake foot?
- 3:08No no, what am I thinking of? Maybe a hotel or something.
- 3:11The Maven might the Maven Hotel, but like for example, it's got
- 3:15the Maven Hotel, which is probably I think like a top five
- 3:18hotel in Denver, yeah, for example.
- 3:20So it's just mix of all, a mix of all these unique businesses.
- 3:25And then it is highly community based because they have the
- 3:28alleyway. Typical Denver thing to have on
- 3:32a Tuesday at 11 AM. You might just have a full blown
- 3:36concert at the Dairy Block. So one of the reasons why when
- 3:41Finn reached out to me, he said, hey, we have a spot inside the
- 3:44Dairy Block that I think you may be a great fit for.
- 3:48I no longer work in corporate and I'm in a yes era.
- 3:52I kind of eliminated maybes from my decision making.
- 3:57So it's either a yes or a no. So he reached out and he, you
- 4:02know, I was like, why not? So I go in and he was like, we
- 4:05have a, you know, a store for you look at it and it was a
- 4:09window front and I was like, I love it, but it's too small.
- 4:13What about that one? Is it available?
- 4:16So there was one in the centre that was this all glass
- 4:19surrounding. And I was like, I think I could
- 4:21put a plant shop there. I've thought about having a
- 4:23plant shop at some point and the one thing I used to say in real
- 4:28estate and a lot of real estate people say is the best time to
- 4:31buy a home is now. And so you kind of can implement
- 4:36that in any aspect of your life is the best time to do anything
- 4:39is right now today, so. 2026 is about now, yeah.
- 4:44It's about making decisions and doing it right.
- 4:47Yeah, Nike never lied when they said just do.
- 4:50It. Yeah.
- 4:52So I said why not and I committed to doing it as a pop
- 4:54up, seeing what they feel like term wise.
- 4:58It's for starting a business and never really a.
- 5:02Business owner before. No, I was never a business
- 5:04owner, but I was a business coach, Yeah.
- 5:07So OK, I understand every single aspect of what it takes to run a
- 5:11business. I also understand that running a
- 5:14brick and mortar in 20252026 is a very scary thing it.
- 5:19Can be, but I feel like people are coming out more.
- 5:22They are. They're coming back.
- 5:23Of course, they're still shopping online, but now they
- 5:25want to be part of a community, they want to come into stores.
- 5:28So I think it's the perfect time to start a plant shop.
- 5:31It is, and I opened it in December.
- 5:34I said why not? Ten days later I opened only
- 5:38plants. It was How'd you?
- 5:40Come up with that name. So the Brett and Paige, there's
- 5:47botanically B on Instagram and TikTok and block blossom effect,
- 5:53two of my plant besties. I thought about doing something
- 5:57like standard plants, you know, and I'm like, hey, how do you
- 6:00guys feel about standard plants? They're like, that's not you.
- 6:03Yeah, you're not standard. Yeah, they're like, that's not
- 6:06you. You're like.
- 6:06Out-of-the-box thing. Yeah, they're like, that's not
- 6:08you, you know, you have a lot of different aspects of what you
- 6:12are in your plant, daddy. So maybe try to keep that
- 6:16aspects of it. And I was like, I could do only
- 6:19plants because I think a lot of times we try to shy away from
- 6:23just like our creativity, who we are or not doing things in fear
- 6:28of what other people might think and things like that.
- 6:31So. Or we're like following what
- 6:34others, what we think others want us to be.
- 6:38And, and you know, when you are true to yourself, I mean, that
- 6:43can create its own following just like with you, I mean, you
- 6:47have like 250,000 followers on Instagram and that's huge.
- 6:53How many do you have? Is it like that much?
- 6:56I've got over 200,000 on both Instagram and TikTok.
- 6:59That's amazing. I don't know the exact 2200 and
- 7:02what I just kind of create and like the numbers come as they
- 7:05come. They're you.
- 7:07That's what's so great about it, and that's what people want.
- 7:10They want authenticity. And anyway, go ahead.
- 7:13Yeah, but yeah, no, I reached out to them and they're like no,
- 7:17try again. And I was like how do y'all feel
- 7:19about only plants? They're like yes, cuz you're a
- 7:21plant daddy. It gives like, you know, it
- 7:23gives like that type of vibe and you're able to stay true to
- 7:26yourself. And I was like, OK, cool.
- 7:29So I spend next 10 days just kind of putting it all together
- 7:34and here we are today. The whole shop and everything.
- 7:37The whole shop. How do you get that many plants
- 7:40in there to sell that quickly? I'm unorthodox, unorthodox
- 7:46marketing. I think building an online, I
- 7:50already have an online persona works very well.
- 7:54I think a lot of people, a lot of businesses today, some are
- 7:58catching on, but traditional marketing is kind of out the
- 8:03door. And so for so for me, I, you
- 8:08mentioned this earlier, staying true to yourself, right?
- 8:11And so one thing that I try to work on consistently is be my
- 8:14true, genuine, authentic self and also allowing myself to open
- 8:19up and walk people through what my life actually looks like or
- 8:22what a process actually looks like.
- 8:25And so I think sharing kind of the journey of from the moment I
- 8:31picked up the keys and you know, what I'm doing, how I'm opening
- 8:34the shop and my vision for it helped out a lot.
- 8:38Which I normally, normally you just, you just see an after for
- 8:42me, you don't see befores and afters or anything.
- 8:45So that worked out very, very well.
- 8:47And we're in a heavily digitally infested world today.
- 8:52And so I went straight to TikTok and Instagram and hey, this is
- 8:56what I'm doing. This is why I'm doing it.
- 8:58Would love to have you guys all here.
- 8:59And surely enough, you know, I think when you build a
- 9:02community, they show up, right? And I'm trying to standardize,
- 9:06you know, the plant shopping experience, right?
- 9:09People come in, I'm like, you know, what did your grandma used
- 9:13to have African violets on her window still?
- 9:15She's like, actually, you know what, yes, she's like, yes, I'm
- 9:18like, you know, take this with you, right?
- 9:20And so a lot of it is because I grateful enough to be in a space
- 9:26financially where the profitability side in this very
- 9:30moment isn't important to me. It's the experience.
- 9:33I don't have to spend marketing dollars.
- 9:35So I'm able to provide people a completely different experience
- 9:39that bring joy to them. Like if they're happy, I'm
- 9:42happy. Yeah, people make me happy.
- 9:43And plants. Make us happy.
- 9:45Plants make people us happy. Well, the.
- 9:47First time I met you only had a few plants.
- 9:50Like hardly any. Yeah.
- 9:51And now I have so many plants, not 300, but they make me happy.
- 9:57Like every morning I go and look at my plants.
- 9:59I open my windows up to them, so it is really transforming.
- 10:03Anyway, go ahead. No, they, they really are
- 10:05transforming and I get to witness that every single day.
- 10:09And so I think that kind of allowed me to in December,
- 10:14opening a plant shop in December, 6 months prior to I
- 10:16looked in the plant shop business, did my research before
- 10:21opening a plant shop, about 6-6 shops, plant shops closed half
- 10:28in the prior year or half a year.
- 10:32And I was like, well, you know, but.
- 10:36You came at. It differently became a
- 10:38different approach, you know, but the community and providing
- 10:40people with that experience, you know, and they still get my
- 10:44personality right and I don't run a corporate tight shift.
- 10:48They get my personality. Daria, the store manager, she's
- 10:52allowed to be her full authentic self, and it works really well
- 10:56that way. And then there's the caveat of
- 10:58why I really got into it. It's the community engagement
- 11:02aspect of it, right? Yeah.
- 11:03Tell us about that. The community engagement aspect
- 11:05of it is one, enabling people to obviously being able to take
- 11:10care of their plans. So I'm currently in the process
- 11:12of moving, so a lot more of that stuff will be coming on, so stay
- 11:17tuned. Like moving your home.
- 11:19No, I'm moving the shop still inside the dairy block.
- 11:23I'm basically tripling the size of it and making it up permanent
- 11:27for at least the next couple years and finalizing everything
- 11:32for it. And it allowed me to have the
- 11:34community based aspect that enables people currently.
- 11:37We'll do you know Plant bingo, for example.
- 11:40Yeah, I saw that on your Instagram.
- 11:42Yeah. What is that about?
- 11:43Plant bingo is it's kind of how I give back.
- 11:47It's one of the times where, you know, people are able to kind of
- 11:51get, you know, your online plant daddy in person.
- 11:55And so plant bingo came from kind of my vision of what kind
- 12:01of experience do I want people to have right.
- 12:04And I, I just turned 30 and so oh.
- 12:08Yeah, happy birthday. It was like a couple days ago,
- 12:10right? Happy birthday.
- 12:11Thank you. And the traditional idea, not
- 12:14maybe not traditional, but just like the nightlife scene, fun
- 12:19every now and then, but not all the time finding different it's.
- 12:23Expensive. It is, but my friends, for
- 12:26example, they love game nights. I use I, I'm the hosting friend.
- 12:29So they love game nights. So they come, they win all these
- 12:32gifts, they win cash, they win drinks, they win whatever PR is
- 12:36sent to me and things like that. And so I was like, what a better
- 12:40way to kind of give back to people in a similar way.
- 12:43So Plan Bingo allows me to bring completely different groups of
- 12:47people who all love plants, who may never have had an experience
- 12:52with plants, and who just wanted to do something different.
- 12:55Yeah. Versus going to a bar.
- 12:57Versus going to a bar and it's it's fun, there's a DJ, there's.
- 13:02Is this at the shop plant? Bingo.
- 13:04It's currently being held inside the space that I'm moving into.
- 13:09OK, yeah. And so it's held in there.
- 13:11Set the stage. Sorry to interrupt.
- 13:13Yeah, but set the stage. Is it like tables and chairs?
- 13:17Like how is it? No, it's family style.
- 13:21It is family style. It's a glass Grove.
- 13:25Imagine being in a glass Grove and you've got kind of just like
- 13:28vintage Modern furniture and there's plants, there's plants
- 13:36everywhere, but we also have like wine for people and things
- 13:40like that. I have a full DJ who kind of
- 13:42sets the tone and allows me Avery if Avery is my Co bingo
- 13:50host and she owns the group chat Denver, so I'll get community
- 13:53building. So she's empowers and enables a
- 13:56lot of the women in Denver from individuals to, you know, women
- 14:01owned businesses in Denver. So that's.
- 14:03So, like, beyond just plans. Yeah, yeah, it's a community.
- 14:07So we're trying to, you know, we're trying to build a
- 14:08community of people who kind of all just want a place to be.
- 14:12And so it's tight in there. You know, people are sitting,
- 14:17you know, they're like all, there's like 4 people on like
- 14:20one sofa bed and like they're all cozy.
- 14:23They're all cozy. You know, one thing that I'll
- 14:26always ask is, is there anybody new here?
- 14:28Right. I just moved into the state now
- 14:30they're able to mingle and they tell us a little bit about
- 14:33themselves. They're able to mingle and talk
- 14:35to everybody and everything. We'll have random dance offs and
- 14:39I being somebody who used to be on stage talking and trying to
- 14:44learn how to just navigate people, it makes it easy because
- 14:47I can randomly have a dance off in the middle of plan bingo.
- 14:51And instead of somebody wanting to plan because of bingo,
- 14:53they're having a dance off. Or it might be like finish the
- 14:56lyrics and you know, so I try to interrupt and bring a lot of
- 14:59different personalities out and you know, so they can all engage
- 15:03with it too. So and it's exciting that you
- 15:05just watch people just like so happy.
- 15:08And I get a lot of follow-ups. They're like, Oh my God, my plan
- 15:10is thriving. And I never kept the plan alive
- 15:13before. I know.
- 15:14That's awesome. That is so wow.
- 15:17You could even have plant bingo. I mean, if anybody's watching,
- 15:20if you're not in Denver, you can always like have plant bingo at
- 15:24your house. So OK, shifting gears just a
- 15:28little bit. So you're moving into this new
- 15:30spot, but you started with RE/MAX, you know, coaching them.
- 15:35So you've, you've always been somewhat in home.
- 15:39So talk to us about plants in your home and how that can
- 15:43really transform your space. And I think we have pictures too
- 15:47of your House, of your home that we can pull up here.
- 15:49Yeah, when I first bought my house, I had your typical
- 15:55millennial grey home. OK, I can't even imagine the
- 16:00transformation within the last year.
- 16:01At some point my house was completely just Gray and white
- 16:05guys. But some plants.
- 16:08No color. I had some plants because plants
- 16:11were the only color I decided I wanted because I learned I
- 16:15originally got into plants 'cause I was wanting to keep an
- 16:17orchid alive and make an orchid bloom.
- 16:19But I learned so much about all these other plants, and so I
- 16:23knew a little bit about plants. I was in a plant expert.
- 16:25How did you get a orchid to bloom a second time?
- 16:28I've never. That has never happened with
- 16:30mine. I give up.
- 16:32I need your help. 1st I I've tried a few different methods
- 16:35that have worked. Most of it is just keeping an
- 16:38eye an eye on the roots and having it in orchid bark.
- 16:41OK And when they turn silver you water them.
- 16:46So when they turn silver, you literally soak them OK and then
- 16:49you know, strain it and then do that basically on a weekly basis
- 16:53or whenever the roots turn silver, they go back green.
- 16:57The other way is just growing orchids in water.
- 17:01No bark. No, no bark.
- 17:03You can grow orchids in just water.
- 17:06So taking it, taking it out of all the substrate it comes in
- 17:09and just growing it in water whenever it blooms, just keep
- 17:12the same consistent care. The more light you give them,
- 17:15the better chances they also have.
- 17:17Try and orchid again. You've got to have a little
- 17:19patience though, yeah? I had about two years of
- 17:23patience, and I'm like, I can't. This thing is not blooming.
- 17:28I'm like, enough of that. And then it makes me sad because
- 17:31those beautiful blooms are no longer there.
- 17:33Yeah. It's patience again.
- 17:35Poor kids teach you a lot of patience, and it's doing.
- 17:38Soda kids. Seriously.
- 17:42I don't have none of those yet, but I think my plants are my
- 17:45plants and my puppies are my kids, so they choose me.
- 17:47A lot of patience, too, yeah. So anyway, back to your Gray
- 17:51millennial house it was. All Gray, it was all millennial
- 17:54plants were the That's the only color I wanted.
- 17:57And I loved it because it brought some life to it.
- 18:01Throughout the pandemic, real estate got really, really busy.
- 18:06And for what I did, one hour calls turned into like 3 hour
- 18:10calls. And I used to be somebody who
- 18:12would take a lot of walks and I couldn't really do things like
- 18:15that. And it became really, really
- 18:17stressful. Oddly enough, sometimes I will
- 18:20find like 5 minutes and I will go water my plants and they
- 18:23actually started becoming more of like a reset for me, right?
- 18:28Or you wake up and you're like, I'm not feeling today and then
- 18:31you see it like new growth and I'm like, wow, that made me feel
- 18:34really good. And then I'm starting to look at
- 18:37a plants in a whole complete different way.
- 18:40Eventually plants also taught, you know, I start developing
- 18:44almost a relationship with my plants where I'm like, this
- 18:47plant makes me feel a certain way.
- 18:48I've watched this plant go through this, through that,
- 18:50through that, or I love how in my corners I only want large
- 18:54plants. In the corners of the room like
- 18:57trees. Trees.
- 18:58Correct. So and you're right and I
- 19:01learned that some plants I never want to get big so I'm always
- 19:04printing them because they look really good on the coffee table.
- 19:06And I'm like because I travel 3 to 4 * a month, I've coming home
- 19:12to just what I had at that time was really nice because I live
- 19:16in hotels. So it was nice coming to a home,
- 19:19but it was never really my home, it was never really me.
- 19:23They should like for hotels, you know how you can check into some
- 19:27hotels and they're like, would you like a fish, you know, to
- 19:30keep you company? They should do that with plants.
- 19:33Yes, yes, one of my should. Start that.
- 19:36The The Maven Hotel might have something like that you.
- 19:39Know right now. All right, all right.
- 19:41So, yeah, but I started kind of just plants started teaching me
- 19:47that I really don't have myself in my home.
- 19:49Like my home is almost a a hotel with some plants.
- 19:55So a year ago I fully just wanted to make my house me.
- 20:00So a lot of different aspects of me.
- 20:02So it's more Moody, it's tighter, you know, I have tan
- 20:06wall. I have like brown, tan walls,
- 20:08but it works. I have green checkered walls and
- 20:12it works. And then even from like the
- 20:15furniture, right? I love to wind down.
- 20:18And it's like, what kind of couch could I have that I can
- 20:21wind down? What kind of couch could I have
- 20:23that when my friends come over all like 8 of us can watch a
- 20:27movie on the same couch, right? What kind of I, I changed my
- 20:32guest bedroom. I got rid of my guest bedroom
- 20:34bed. What kind of and I turned it
- 20:36into. Is that the plant room?
- 20:38Is that the one with the Durango in it?
- 20:40The Durango leather sofa. So I had a search for the
- 20:44perfect couch to fit in that room that I can still have a
- 20:49plant room that's just oh look, jungle.
- 20:54Yeah, jungle. But my friend, like if I have a
- 20:57guest, all I've got to do is pull it up and they're like in a
- 21:01jungle haven you've got. You got the one that's the same
- 21:04brain, yes. So it's still a guest room and
- 21:07they're like the 1st guest. They're like, Oh my God, I, I
- 21:10can breathe in here. It feels just like so
- 21:12therapeutic. And I have like a vintage, I
- 21:17have a vintage record player in there for them.
- 21:20No TV in there. I'm like, this is like a
- 21:22therapeutic. So they have like a tea set in
- 21:24there, just like all these different things with all these
- 21:26plants. Sometimes I sleep in there
- 21:29instead of my own bedroom because I'm like, this is just
- 21:31like a Zen, you know, I can go in there, build a Lego set and
- 21:35just like feel. Feel the energy.
- 21:37Of the energy and the color complements everything very you
- 21:41know the brown complements all the green very well.
- 21:44So I had to Start learning about different color tones.
- 21:47So I have about four different color tones in my house and I
- 21:49try to keep to like those four or per room and things like
- 21:54that. So did that and then all the way
- 21:56to like my puppies. My puppies have their own, you
- 21:59know, they take up Myspace, right?
- 22:01They're they think they're lap dogs, so they think they take up
- 22:03a lot of Myspace. So right there you'll see like
- 22:06they even have I'm like, I'm like all Oh, they need a.
- 22:09Bed they need. I love those little dog beds.
- 22:12I bet they're even comfortable if you wanted to sit on it
- 22:14yourself. Have you sat on those?
- 22:16Yes. OK yes I'm like how do y'all
- 22:17like it? I love it and those can even
- 22:22turn around like this one is the luscious how you have that like
- 22:25turned around facing. Same with their little dog beds.
- 22:29Is my house never looks the same.
- 22:31My friends come over there like where's so just about every
- 22:35other week my house changes around a lot.
- 22:37So sometimes those are there downstairs.
- 22:39Sometimes they're up in the plant room and they're they love
- 22:43plants. They're like plants are part of
- 22:45their home. So they're like always in
- 22:46plants, but they not like they're like what kind of plan
- 22:49this ones new, right? They like stroke their head
- 22:51through it and everything. But sometimes they're in my
- 22:54bedroom and I'm they're so mobile, kind of just like my
- 22:57couches. So I'm able to move them around
- 23:00so nicely where they're still everything has to be anything
- 23:03that comes into my house. Has to be aesthetic.
- 23:05Aesthetically pleasing, yeah, but also kind of simple.
- 23:09Simple, modern. But it's got a character to it,
- 23:12so it's really nice. And people come in, they're
- 23:14like, Oh my God, your dogs have couches, Of course, Yes, of.
- 23:17Course they do, and they look like I love those they're.
- 23:21Like a mini like of the sectional.
- 23:24Yeah, yeah. I think is that the luscious
- 23:27that you have? Which color is that?
- 23:29The. The Gray color, I love that
- 23:31because you can move it around and like, I love this.
- 23:34Rearrange it, however, yeah. So is that what you're always
- 23:38rearranging too? Is the luscious.
- 23:40Yes. So the luscious, I'm always just
- 23:42rearranging. So sometimes this is 1 long
- 23:45piece, sometimes it's 2:00 and 2:00 here, sometimes it's like 3
- 23:49here, 1 here. I can do whatever I want with it
- 23:52and it's very, very nice. Yeah, I like that.
- 23:55I like that it's, you know, movable and you can rearrange it
- 23:58to different layouts in that particular room.
- 24:03What about somebody? That's how would you say
- 24:07somebody that's living in an apartment that can't really like
- 24:10that one picture that you had of the Durango sofa with your plant
- 24:14wall and shelves. If they're not allowed to like
- 24:17hang shelves on the walls? Like what would you tell someone
- 24:21that's living in an apartment or a place that they can't put
- 24:24holes in the wall? Like how do you live with plants
- 24:26and have a lot of plants without?
- 24:29Yeah, you can do damaging walls a lot of times.
- 24:31I see so many people almost just put plants like they have like a
- 24:38plant wall or like a plant corner and they just like shove
- 24:40everything in there. I used to be one of those people
- 24:42until I started learning how to style with plants and
- 24:46everything. And so if you're in an apartment
- 24:48space, IA 100% think utilizing the current furniture that you
- 24:53have, you could or being a little bit creative and
- 24:57utilizing different ways of style and decorate.
- 25:00You can you know, we're right here, right now.
- 25:02I can put a stack of 10 to 12 books here and put a plant on
- 25:06there. Sure.
- 25:07Right. And I can use a coffee table you
- 25:09can use, you know, a dresser you can use.
- 25:13I use my fridge oddly. You put them on top.
- 25:16Yeah, I'll put them on top and they just like flow from the
- 25:19bottom. Yeah, I love.
- 25:20That so I think for somebody who's in an apartment finding
- 25:23different ledges or different things that you can kind of just
- 25:26like add to right Or if you know you have an island, you can, you
- 25:31know, put some sort of board on there at a plant or add acute
- 25:37propagation stand and just being creative and styling them in
- 25:43with all your other decor. Yeah, right.
- 25:46So I'm like a three piece decoration type of person and so
- 25:51you can. Three's a good number.
- 25:53We were talking to a gal the other day that that's how she
- 25:56comes up with colors and and rooms as she goes with three
- 25:59colors. So yeah, same with the three.
- 26:02Three, yeah. So you can go a plant, some
- 26:05piece of like a piece of art decoration, A vase or something
- 26:09like that. And you know, it'll almost
- 26:11always flow a clock pairing it with pairing it with something.
- 26:16So it's not just like there and it's more decoration.
- 26:20So I would 100%. What about like, do you remember
- 26:24when we were at the Fashion Denver Fashion Week and we have
- 26:27those shelves? I think they were the leaning
- 26:29shells. I don't know if we have a
- 26:30picture of that or not, but I loved how that was staged, like
- 26:34with all of the plants. So what do you think of that for
- 26:38an apartment? I love, I love that I own my
- 26:41home, so I drilled everything. I don't care.
- 26:44One day they may fall. So no, they probably won't.
- 26:48But I love shelves solely because I can optimize.
- 26:54So whether they're standing shelves, whether they're
- 26:57standalone shelves, whether they're mounted shelves, it
- 27:00allows you to do anything I can have.
- 27:02You can have all plans. You can have pieces and parts of
- 27:05yourself, right? So the character traits, the
- 27:08thing you know, if you're a traveler and you're collecting
- 27:11items, you can design those. In.
- 27:15With the plants, so I always think a mix of plants on those
- 27:18shelves along with other, you know, art pieces of yourself
- 27:23that make your home, your home work very well.
- 27:27And you can also have one that's designated for plants as yes,
- 27:33I've seen for me where I have full ones, but I also have
- 27:36shelves in that room that have, you know, clogs.
- 27:39They have plant Lego sets, they have watering cans as decor and
- 27:45things like that. Yeah, there's some beautiful, I
- 27:47think you have like a copper or is it silver?
- 27:50That is a beautiful watering can.
- 27:53I don't know where you got that. I have no idea.
- 27:55It was a gift. Actually, it was a gift, yeah.
- 27:57So you really can decorate with those things around.
- 28:01And you know, another thing I like too, like you're saying you
- 28:04could put it on your island or on a coffee table, like here is
- 28:08putting a tray under it. But I think that always looks
- 28:12nice and it contains it. So if you're like me and you
- 28:16over water something and it gets all over the place, the tray
- 28:22helps with that. But OK, I want to go back.
- 28:25I don't mean to jump back, but I want to talk about the room that
- 28:28your guests stay in that sometimes you stay in.
- 28:31I want you to tell us more about that.
- 28:33For anybody that's looking at doing a guest room, it doesn't
- 28:37necessarily have to have a bed in there.
- 28:40It could be a sofa bed, correct? Like what you have?
- 28:42So I probably should be in like a four or five bedroom house.
- 28:46OK, But I feel and I've, I almost bought one, but I was
- 28:50like, I feel like I'm going to be lonely because it's I'm
- 28:53single. It's just me.
- 28:54I feel like I would be lonely with just like so much space.
- 28:57But sometimes I'm like I need more room because I live with so
- 29:01many plans and I have two big dogs.
- 29:04But a 2 bedroom works fine for me.
- 29:07My friends love to come over, my family love loves to come over
- 29:10and I work from home and I gained I played Nintendo Switch
- 29:15online. I enter like random super smash
- 29:18borough tournaments and stuff like that.
- 29:20So I'm like I need like a work like I need an office I need.
- 29:23A workspace, a fun place and I. Need a guest room, how do I do
- 29:26this? So I got in my guest room and
- 29:29I'm like studio, a plant in studio almost.
- 29:33I have floating shelves in there that I can use as a desk and
- 29:36workstation. I have a couch that I can just
- 29:38go in there, chill. I can put a coffee table in
- 29:41there, build a Lego set, have some tea time, read a book, just
- 29:46relax. I can take the coffee table out
- 29:49or move it somewhere, pull the couch out and I'm having I have
- 29:54a guest coming. Hey, we're coming over.
- 29:56It's comfortable. Too, It's very comfortable.
- 29:58It's like I mentioned, I thought I had a comfortable bed and I go
- 30:02sleep in my guest bedroom, my plant room, my studio sometimes.
- 30:05And so I think there's a lot of different uses for uses for a
- 30:12guest room. It doesn't always have to be a
- 30:14guest room. You can make it into a lot of
- 30:16different things if you learn how to optimize all of that
- 30:20stuff cuz I shoot a lot in there.
- 30:22In that room. You may not be able to, I have,
- 30:25you know, I have a lot of like shooting gear in there and some
- 30:28of them are staged accordingly. The lighting, the lamps, all
- 30:31those things have to kind of like correlate.
- 30:34And then I can go in there and take a call.
- 30:35I can work and I can do a lot of things, but that couch
- 30:39specifically allows me to have all of that and it just stays
- 30:46there, so. Well, and we're seeing that too,
- 30:49like furniture that does double duty.
- 30:52It doesn't have to be, just think outside of the box.
- 30:55It doesn't have to be exactly like that bookshelf for books.
- 30:59It could be a plant stand. It could be, you know, the
- 31:03coffee station, a guest bedroom. Like we were saying, you can put
- 31:08a sofa in there and have a bed. That's so I just want everybody
- 31:13to start thinking outside the box like how can you decorate
- 31:17your home, get the things that you need in there and you know,
- 31:20have things that are dual purpose 100.
- 31:24Percent yeah. And I think a lot of times we're
- 31:28we're in a very trendy phase where you see everybody has the
- 31:32same lamps, everybody has the same couch, everybody has the
- 31:36same no, because I it's my space, it's my space.
- 31:42And at some point I was the in the training space and I'm like,
- 31:45this doesn't feel like home. So now if I want an organized
- 31:48chaos, I'm going to live in an organized chaos.
- 31:52But I used to be a minimalist and I can still like curate A
- 31:56minimalist organized chaos vibe in my space depending on how I
- 32:00lay my space out by having dual purpose, you know, not even dual
- 32:05multi purpose furniture, right? I can my couch can just be a
- 32:09couch or it could be a bed or it could be a plant stand.
- 32:15I the backboard of it, the backboard of it I put I put
- 32:19plants on there, right. And sometimes on the on the what
- 32:23are the armrests? Yeah, sometimes on the armrests
- 32:26I put a plant wide. And.
- 32:28I could put a plant on there so I can do that with the
- 32:32furniture, right? Just like my sectional, I can
- 32:37make it cozy in there, I can make it loungey in there, I can
- 32:41make it. That's what's so.
- 32:43Great about. Those those types of sofas that
- 32:47you can like put different pieces together and, you know,
- 32:51create different setups. What word am I looking for?
- 32:56It's not transformer furniture, but it's what's that chameleon
- 33:01furniture? That's what we like to call it.
- 33:02So, yeah. So let's talk about like, and we
- 33:08kind of have talked about it in a roundabout way, but by
- 33:10affiliate design, I mean that's like something that's happening
- 33:15everywhere right now with there's a hotel down in Denver
- 33:18that that's their whole concept. So tell us about that.
- 33:24In what? Aspect particularly, that's a
- 33:26good question, just how people are bringing in the, you know,
- 33:31natural plants, things of nature into their home and living
- 33:37within, you know, their space with nature all around.
- 33:41I think that's a very almost a people want to feel comfortable.
- 33:47I think primarily it's a comfort thing.
- 33:49It's an aesthetic thing. It's not just a trendy thing,
- 33:53it's not a it's. Not a trendy, it's not a trendy
- 33:56thing. I think it's become more so
- 33:57becoming a thing, especially for travelers.
- 34:00For example, I stay at the one hotels in the states that they
- 34:05have them in because all their all their plants are real.
- 34:09There are are Moss. Walls and you know.
- 34:13They have a lot of just earthy tone things embedded in them.
- 34:17You go and look for those types of hotels just.
- 34:20Particularly and so I think it brings a lot of just a lot of
- 34:28warmth and I think it takes away the the boring, the dull aspect
- 34:34of hotels or even your living space because it brings a lot of
- 34:38life to it. It brings a lot of energy and
- 34:41positive energy at that. And I think it makes people feel
- 34:45comfortable. I think it relaxes people.
- 34:48Often times only being a plant shop owner, I get to understand
- 34:51why people get plans, right? The questions that they ask me
- 34:55that, you know, does this purify my air right?
- 34:57So going into a space and you see a snake plant or you see a
- 35:01piece, you're like, oh, my space is purified.
- 35:06Mind you, you probably. Do all plants purify the?
- 35:09Not all plants. Some plants don't, but I think
- 35:13they purify it. It's a psychological.
- 35:18It is a psychological things because more often than not you
- 35:20need a lot of those plants for them to actually be productive
- 35:25and fully purify the air that you have.
- 35:29But I have seen a lot more hotels kind of do things.
- 35:32Like embracing that. And some hotels, some hotels do
- 35:36have the opportunity for you to ask for a plant.
- 35:40I love that. You know, if you came in, I
- 35:41wouldn't. Ask for a plant.
- 35:42The next hotel. Yeah, I'm just going to see what
- 35:45they come up with. Like, do they have?
- 35:49Yeah. And so I think it's, I think
- 35:51it's nice because I think it makes people feel like home.
- 35:54I think it brings, I think plants bring life, then they
- 35:57bring a lot of life to spaces. And so it's really nice seeing a
- 36:01lot of that in a lot of spaces or even in retail spaces.
- 36:04I went to have breakfast the other day and I see a pothos
- 36:07wall. What is that?
- 36:08A pothos wall, it's like a full wall and they just like line
- 36:12all. It's like probably over 300 like
- 36:144 inch pothos inside of like the wall.
- 36:19And it's amazing that for me, it makes me I'm like anywhere I go,
- 36:24I always pay attention to plants, right?
- 36:26And I'm like, that shouldn't be. I don't love that fake plant,
- 36:29right? And I see real plants and it
- 36:31makes me so happy and so jazzed. I was in a coffee shop in
- 36:36Minnesota. It was last last summer and it
- 36:39was this old warehouse that they turned into a coffee shop and it
- 36:43was, first of all, it was delicious.
- 36:44I don't remember the name of it, but if anybody's watching or
- 36:47listening to this, they might know.
- 36:49But they had really high ceilings and then all these
- 36:53little setups like things like this, little leather chairs and
- 36:57leather sofas. And, you know, it's just very
- 37:00like relaxed. And they had plants everywhere.
- 37:03There was a wall that was the whole wall was plants.
- 37:06Yeah. It was just a really great
- 37:08feeling. I never wanted to leave.
- 37:12But it makes me feel. I think it's plants create like
- 37:16a very cozy, very cozy, earthy and they kind of just like allow
- 37:21you to like be grounded and being grounded in the space that
- 37:25you're in and not just being it's not too staged, right?
- 37:30Plants make you know they're just like it's.
- 37:34It's they add a softness to the space.
- 37:36I mean, if you were we just added a few real ones in here.
- 37:39We actually have a fake one Cosi that's like a.
- 37:42Fake. We'll we'll work.
- 37:43We'll just pretend. We'll deal with it.
- 37:45Yeah, but we took some of our fake plants out and put real in
- 37:49today and it does just bring a different life to it.
- 37:53So what about, you know, if, if you're starting from zero, like
- 37:58you just moved into your first place, whether it's an apartment
- 38:01or your first house or condo and you don't have a, a plant
- 38:07insight, like where would you tell the tell somebody to start
- 38:10like it if they just don't know much?
- 38:12About if you don't. Care of plants.
- 38:14Much about plants I think all thumbs are green OK right.
- 38:18It's just a little learning curve.
- 38:19It's it's a little learning curve.
- 38:20You got to give it a try. I would say for starters, a
- 38:25snake plant you. Are those those ones that are
- 38:29like tall? Snake plants are very low
- 38:32maintenance plants. They tolerate low light very
- 38:35well. They tolerate bright light.
- 38:37They thrive in bright light, but they will tolerate low light
- 38:40and. Like where would you go low
- 38:42light? Would that be like a bathroom
- 38:45that doesn't have a window in? It or a window, a corner that
- 38:49doesn't get, you know, your morning EE sun or South light or
- 38:55anything like that. And so anywhere that really
- 38:58doesn't get light, like your basement for example, a snake
- 39:01plant will be great because it tolerates it.
- 39:03It just grows a little bit slower.
- 39:05And you water them about once a month, right?
- 39:07So they do. That's pretty easy.
- 39:08They do well off of neglect. ZZ plants are pretty similar.
- 39:12What is it called? AZ Plant.
- 39:14What is that? AZ plant is and they come in a
- 39:18few, they come in a chameleon, so they're green and they kind
- 39:22of just stem with just like they're more.
- 39:25Maybe we can put a picture of that on there?
- 39:26They're more rub, they're more rubbery, but they also tolerate
- 39:30low light very well. They're very easy, tolerate a
- 39:33lot of highlights. So I would say snake plants, ZZ
- 39:36plants, the pothos, and like the most plants in the Philodendron
- 39:40family, work really well. And then you can go like your
- 39:45monsters or your standard ones. Hoyas, I would say.
- 39:49Hoyas are you never. Heard of that?
- 39:51Hoyas are going to be more rubbery.
- 39:52They're slower growers so you don't have to worry about them
- 39:56taking over your space or anything they can.
- 39:59They normally love to dry out between watering and so they're
- 40:03going to be OK with neglect. So I would say hoyas pileas.
- 40:08And paleas are one of my favorite home decor type of
- 40:11plants. I need to see what these are.
- 40:13We've got to find pictures. Of them and put them.
- 40:16On our podcast. Here.
- 40:17So paleas I think are going to be really cute.
- 40:20They're really cute. They add a little bit of
- 40:23character. Are they small?
- 40:24They're small, OK, so they're. Cute.
- 40:26Like in a bookshelf? Yeah.
- 40:28In table? A night stand, Yes.
- 40:30OK. Yeah.
- 40:31So you can style them very easy and.
- 40:35I think that was the thing for me is I need those plants
- 40:39because I do have areas in my home that doesn't, you know, I
- 40:43have windows, but you know, it's like a night stand next to my
- 40:46bed. The window's not right there.
- 40:49So maybe one of those plants could go on my night stand. 100%
- 40:53there's a lot more plants that at the plant shop I carry
- 40:58probably 90% of plant, 90% of the plants that I carry in there
- 41:04are for the everyday people, whether they're plant people,
- 41:07whether they're never have had a plant because I do think plants
- 41:12should be accessible to everybody, right.
- 41:14So I more so have, I've spent thousands of dollars on a
- 41:18singular plant before and some, some of those plants are no
- 41:23longer with me, right. And so more of the rare plants,
- 41:28the variegated plants are actually, they actually lack the
- 41:32like they, they're deficient, they lack chlorophyll.
- 41:36So rare plants are rare plants are actually deficient plants
- 41:40because they lack chlorophyll. And so I try to keep them out of
- 41:44the shop because they're the most expensive and they're
- 41:48they're the first ones to go. Yeah, they're a little harder to
- 41:50care for, one expert. Correct.
- 41:53So most plants I would say just about anybody can have.
- 41:57They just need, you know, if you're a visual learn, if you're
- 42:00a visual learner and you're a touch type of person, you can
- 42:04keep majority plants alive if you can tell what a yellow leaf
- 42:08is a brown leaf is. That's not good.
- 42:12Right. Not all.
- 42:13It's not always a bad thing. But if your plants are wilted,
- 42:16right? If they're wilted, they probably
- 42:18just need some water. So if you can visually see that
- 42:20like, hey, my leaves are getting wilted, just water it right.
- 42:24And if you can look at your soil and touch your soil and you're
- 42:28like, wow, that's kind of crunchy.
- 42:30That's water it. So I think it's really and.
- 42:35Drainage isn't that. Important.
- 42:37Yeah, drainage is important and so making sure you have a
- 42:40nursery. I try to keep all my plants in a
- 42:43nursery pot into a decorative pot.
- 42:45OK, so always having that. That way they're able to fully
- 42:49drain. Is the nursery pot the one that
- 42:51comes in like the plastic and then you drop that into a
- 42:54decorative pot? Yes.
- 42:55OK, yeah, so I always do that if you have less than 30 plants.
- 42:59I love running most of I water most of my plants that are
- 43:05downstairs because my downstairs is probably a little bit more
- 43:08plants than the average person, but it's very minimal.
- 43:11Still very minimal. I water majority of those in the
- 43:14sink because I can just take them out of the nursery pot.
- 43:18Put them in the sink. Put them in the sink, water
- 43:19them, leave them for 30 minutes, an hour, they're fully strained.
- 43:24And then I just put them right back into where they need to go.
- 43:27And so when people are, how much should I water it?
- 43:30You can water a plant for three hours straight as long as it has
- 43:35drainage. Yeah.
- 43:36And it's not just sitting in the water.
- 43:38I mean, 'cause they are in nature and it's raining on them
- 43:42in nature, so. But they have drainage, right?
- 43:44Unless it's a flood. Yeah, exactly.
- 43:46Yeah, I love that. So you, you know, you just moved
- 43:52into this new place. Not you.
- 43:54I'm just talking about in general, people are moving in.
- 43:56So things that they can do is these low key plants that don't
- 44:01require a lot of upkeep and don't don't really require like
- 44:07a lot of knowledge of how to care for them.
- 44:10Yeah. And most plants, I think most
- 44:12plants, if you can thoroughly water once a month.
- 44:16No, sorry if you can full thoroughly water once every
- 44:21week. Yes.
- 44:23Allow them to drain, give them moderate light.
- 44:26Most plants will be good. Pretty good like.
- 44:28Moderate light water once a week.
- 44:31Leave them alone. And they're fine.
- 44:33Yeah, I like that, being able to have plants in my house.
- 44:41I only have plants like that are on either my kitchen window sill
- 44:47or on my kitchen counter because of the light.
- 44:50And then I have this, it's like a little bar cart and I've put
- 44:54all my other plants on there and I pushed that in front of my
- 44:57window. But you've given me a lot of
- 45:00hope. Like I'm going to start adding
- 45:01plants to my rooms without so much light.
- 45:04Can you kind of plant thrive like in a bathroom that has no
- 45:08natural light? Or do you have to have natural
- 45:10lights? Somewhere you don't have to have
- 45:11natural lights you can use. I started putting grow lights
- 45:15into lamps, for example like a decorative lamp and I'll just
- 45:18change the bulb to a grow light, right?
- 45:21So if. You so like a lamp like this,
- 45:23you can put a. Correct.
- 45:24So something like that, I will put a grow light into it instead
- 45:28to give it a little bit of light.
- 45:30If it's a low light tolerant plant, it'll be fine.
- 45:32OK, It's just going to grow a little bit slower so you 100%
- 45:38can. I love that we just have to make
- 45:40sure it's not something that needs that.
- 45:43Needs full sun. Full sun, like anything
- 45:45variegated, anytime you see color in a plant, anything
- 45:48outside of green, for example, if it has a lot of white
- 45:51variegation or pink variegation or yellow variegation, you
- 45:54should not keep it in. You should not keep it in a low
- 45:58light environment. OK.
- 46:00It needs full sun. It needs a lot of sun, Yeah.
- 46:03This may sound like kind of a crazy question, but I'm going to
- 46:06ask it. Are flowering plant or flower
- 46:12flowers? Are those a plant or?
- 46:16Flowers are plants because they are plants that flower.
- 46:20OK, got. It OK, you know, most flowers
- 46:25come from a plant that flower like you look at a rose for
- 46:29example. So that's a point you're going
- 46:30to see a plant before you see the flowers indoors.
- 46:33For example, you have the peace Lily that flowers.
- 46:37You have aglonema is that flower.
- 46:40You've got that Ring of Fire for example.
- 46:44Not often, but eventually it will flower.
- 46:46That's. Going to have a flower.
- 46:48Most I've. Not seen that yet.
- 46:50Most plants do flower OK. Most plants do flower they just
- 46:54have to be in the right environment because house plants
- 46:57now have to re adapt to being in a home and not in nature.
- 47:02Most of them won't flower or you won't see most of them flower
- 47:05because they're not thriving out in nature.
- 47:08But if you are able to you know most plenty people you know
- 47:11you'll see. Oh my God my Hoya just bloomed
- 47:14right and they're flowering. Or Alocasia.
- 47:17My calathea just bloomed. Most plants flower just not in
- 47:23homes. So I will 100% say plants are,
- 47:27well, flowers are plants because they bloom from plants.
- 47:32Interesting. I'm glad that you answered that
- 47:35one because I I didn't know. I had no idea.
- 47:38The plant behind you. That one.
- 47:41I was surprised when I saw it had a flower.
- 47:44Yeah. Yeah, and that in springtime,
- 47:47most plants are going to bloom in springtime too.
- 47:50So you'll probably see a lot more blooming plants around this
- 47:54time getting on on the counters. Whether you're at your local
- 47:58Home Depot or you're at your Walmart or you're at your local
- 48:02plant shop, you're going to start seeing a lot more color
- 48:05because this is right about the time where people just want so
- 48:08much color, so many blooms within their house, whether it's
- 48:12on their patio, outside in their home or whether they're
- 48:15gardeners and they're starting to garden again.
- 48:18So you're going to start seeing a lot more colors.
- 48:20It's getting warmer, there's more, I love it, there's more
- 48:23light. So more you're gonna see just
- 48:27more plants bloom in general. Yeah, yeah, I love spring.
- 48:30What's your favorite season? My favorite season is spring,
- 48:36but I also love winter. Really.
- 48:40Yes, so I love, I love. Winter.
- 48:43I love winter because I love winding down and I'm like a very
- 48:47cozy person. Yeah.
- 48:48And winter allows me. Yeah, winter allows winters in
- 48:51Colorado. I, let me rephrase that because
- 48:54I spent a lot of time in the Midwest.
- 48:55I don't enjoy the Midwest. I don't enjoy.
- 48:58Temperatures. Yes, I don't enjoy the Midwest
- 49:01winter, but I love Colorado winters.
- 49:03I'm still allowed. I still get a lot of sun and but
- 49:07I can be so nice. About being here, Maybe we
- 49:10shouldn't tell people that, but there's like over 300 days of
- 49:15sunshine. I mean, my goodness.
- 49:18Yeah, so I would say spring, yeah.
- 49:19So I would say spring because it's moderate.
- 49:21It's it's nice, but it's not too hot.
- 49:24It's you can still take the chilly days.
- 49:27And then winters, the winters here are still not extreme.
- 49:30Yeah, right. And I can go snowboarding, come
- 49:33home and I can be walking my dogs at Wash Park and it's not
- 49:37in shorts all in the same day. So yeah.
- 49:40Yeah, I love spring. I think that's my favorite.
- 49:44And then I love fall. Fall.
- 49:47I love the changing of the leaves and so nice.
- 49:50Do you also do plant like yard plants?
- 49:54Are you only indoor plants? Oddly, I did a little switch up
- 49:59this year. OK.
- 50:01I normally go to plant con. What is Plant Con?
- 50:06So there's. Is it kind of like Comic Con?
- 50:09Only? Yes.
- 50:10Plants so and Kenny the president and founder of it does
- 50:13an amazing job and so it's becoming very popular.
- 50:17They just got done with one in LA OK is.
- 50:19It always traveling to different places.
- 50:21Yes, some places like Houston and Dallas, Orlando, some places
- 50:26are kind of set now. They're branched, so I think
- 50:29they're five years strong now. So they're branching into
- 50:31different markets. And so I normally go to Plant
- 50:35con. So they have one in LA that I
- 50:37was going to go to. I was also invited to speak at
- 50:40the National Western Flower and Garden Show in Seattle this
- 50:44year, so about two months ago. And I was like, you know what,
- 50:47it's time for change because I always go to plant con and I'm
- 50:50not familiar with outdoor plants and gardening.
- 50:54And they still have a House plan aspect of it.
- 50:56So I did partake in that. But I went and I brought back
- 51:00some seeds. Some some of them I have no idea
- 51:02what they are flowering seeds. So my garage right now is full
- 51:07of a lot of just like soil, bark, outdoor stuff.
- 51:12I don't I live in a town home so my yard is managed by my HOA.
- 51:17But I'm going to try to do a patio garden this year.
- 51:20I love that. So I'm going to do a patio
- 51:22garden. So I have some rose bushes I
- 51:24have. Will those be in a container or
- 51:27will they be like in a a plant box?
- 51:28So I'm going to get a plant box. I've been scavenging for just
- 51:32these unique planters with some colors, unique characteristics.
- 51:36So I'm not just having like a garden bed and just like all
- 51:40these flowers coming out of it. But I'm basically going to be
- 51:43staging my patio with, you know, outdoor.
- 51:47I'm going to bring some of my indoor plants that would thrive
- 51:50more outdoors. I'm gonna bring some of those
- 51:53out so they still have that same feeling cuz I love house plants
- 51:57and some of them thrive outdoors in the spring and summertime.
- 52:01I have. Lemons and limes that are
- 52:03indoors all winter, and now that it's becoming warmer, I'll put
- 52:08them outside, but they're in these big giant pots.
- 52:11They're really heavy. Get some.
- 52:13Help when you move those? Yeah, get some help when you
- 52:15move those. Yeah.
- 52:16So you're gonna create an outdoor space with your plants
- 52:20and then outdoor plants as well. Yes.
- 52:22And then do you have like your furniture for out there and a
- 52:27rug and decor like what's your plan?
- 52:31Currently, I don't have a plan. OK, I don't have a plan.
- 52:35I am going to. I've got to make all my soils
- 52:40and everything. I have all my seeds.
- 52:41I have the Bush, some of the bushes that I want and
- 52:45everything. So now I'm going to lay them
- 52:47out. I have two patios, so now I'm
- 52:49going to lay them out. So now I have to actually go.
- 52:52I have some furniture, patio furniture already, but I'm also
- 52:56a minimalist, yes. So it's going to be almost a
- 53:00full revamp. So now I'm going to actually
- 53:02have to go in and say, okay, these are the pots that I found.
- 53:06This is kind of how I want to design everything and then bring
- 53:09in the proper furniture. I think I'm probably putting us
- 53:15all on the spot here, but seriously, I think we need to do
- 53:18like a do your outdoor space. Yeah, seriously, how fun would
- 53:24that be? We have outdoor furniture.
- 53:26It'd be really fun to do that. I don't know if I'm allowed to
- 53:29say that, but yeah, that'd be. Really fun, a fun little
- 53:33project. It really would, and.
- 53:35It's I, I never used to be handy.
- 53:38I never used to be like a, a handy person and things like
- 53:41that. I became very handy.
- 53:43So now I would much, instead of hiring somebody, I was at the
- 53:47conventions like the garden convention.
- 53:52They had a convention in the Convention Center, and there's
- 53:55all these here. In.
- 53:57Denver and they're all they're, you know, we could come do your
- 54:00patio for you. And then I'm like, there's no
- 54:02fun in that. I would rather do it myself.
- 54:04And I feel like you always feel so much more rewarded when you
- 54:07plant a seed and then it grows into like a full, whether it's
- 54:11vegetables or flowers or a full plant that's.
- 54:13Another reason I love spring because all those bulbs that
- 54:16were planted are now coming up. You're seeing them all pop up.
- 54:20So I'm excited for that. So I think that would definitely
- 54:22be a a nice little mesh up of just like turning that's, you
- 54:27know, patios into like miniature gardens.
- 54:30Yeah. So I'm excited for that and I
- 54:33think that's definitely something we could do and it
- 54:37also inspire a lot of small spaces.
- 54:39I. Know there's.
- 54:39A lot of a lot of apartments here, even the newer 1.
- 54:42They just have like a. Small patios.
- 54:45And, you know, I don't think most people understand that you
- 54:48can still make a garden on a patio.
- 54:50Absolutely still create a garden on a patio.
- 54:52So yeah. Yeah, and it just adds to how
- 54:55much living space you have. And so like small spaces, we've
- 54:59we've done a a show on small spaces for outdoors and like,
- 55:03you know, small, medium and large and what all you can do.
- 55:06But even if you just have like the size of this rug space, you
- 55:11could put two chairs, you could or even 1 and, you know, an
- 55:14Ottoman just and then fill it with your plants.
- 55:17It'd be really great. Yeah, yeah, I definitely think
- 55:21you'd think you'd want to do that.
- 55:23Yeah, I would. OK, let's do it.
- 55:25Yeah, I think it'd be a lot of fun.
- 55:27So another thing I want to talk about are plants and pets and
- 55:32that combination because like in design, you know, if you have
- 55:36pets, you got to think about that, like what kind of rug
- 55:39you're going to put in there. We love washable rugs with pets
- 55:43and children. And then certain fabrics or
- 55:46Leathers, you know, Leathers, just easy to clean off.
- 55:50It depends on what type of leather it is.
- 55:51But so talk to us a little bit about plants and pets.
- 55:57And then are there certain plants that you should avoid if
- 56:01you have pets? Or how do you, I mean, you have
- 56:04300 plants. So are they all non-toxic or
- 56:07could they be toxic to animals? I've asked you a lot of
- 56:09questions. Yeah.
- 56:11So I think plants, pets, design all come into play extremely
- 56:16well. The type of rug that I have
- 56:18matters. So the checkered, the checkered
- 56:21rug that I have, for example, I've had maybe three of those,
- 56:25OK. Because I have in that color.
- 56:28I'm like a creature. I have habit.
- 56:29I ordered the same exact one. I love the checkerboard.
- 56:33It's so it's such a fun pattern right now.
- 56:36And so now the one that I have, I veered away from the other one
- 56:42because rugs are expensive and I have a washable one now because
- 56:46I. Have this checkerboard is
- 56:47washable. Yeah, So now I have one that's
- 56:49washable because I have pets. I live in Colorado.
- 56:53We go to the State Park, they go swimming, they get muddy, they
- 56:57go outside and they. Yeah.
- 57:00So with pets, you know, or if you have puppies, they have
- 57:03accidents. So I've got to make sure I can
- 57:06still have an aesthetic space. But now I've diverted to making
- 57:10sure I have a washable rug that's still aesthetic that I
- 57:14can navigate with my pets. When it comes to pet friendly
- 57:19house plants, being a plant shop owner, being a plant content
- 57:23creator, that's a pinpoint that people, some people run into
- 57:28late because they're like, Oh, my pet a my plans and they're
- 57:33throwing up and they're doing this.
- 57:35Yeah. And that there are certain
- 57:36plants that are pet friendly. A lot of calatheas, a lot of
- 57:39Hoyas are pet friendly. And those are the ones that are
- 57:44easy plants too for people too. Are you know, you're, you know,
- 57:48like a watermelon Pepperonias are a good one too, so that
- 57:52you're you are going to have some pet friendly house plants
- 57:55that you can still style very, very well.
- 57:58For me, I had to introduce house plants to my dogs when they were
- 58:01puppies, right? So they would get into the soil
- 58:04or they would chew on them. But very quickly how I may have
- 58:09showed them not to touch them may have been a little mean, but
- 58:14I had like a stuffed animal that I beat up.
- 58:16It was like a little dog stuffed animal and I like play with it
- 58:20in like the plants and I beat it up a little bit.
- 58:23Unorthodox. They're like what is.
- 58:25Going on, but I think over time outside of that, obviously that
- 58:30was more the humorous side, but I honestly just introduced it to
- 58:36them early, like introduced it to them early.
- 58:38So they just, it's part of their home.
- 58:42So spider plants, for example, are going to be some that are
- 58:46very well, but through spider plants, I love hanging my spider
- 58:50plants. So for, you know, cat owners,
- 58:54for example, hanging plants are really good in spaces that they
- 58:57can't really get, they can't really get to, right.
- 59:02So if you're a pet owner but you want plants, maybe try to hang
- 59:08your plants. If you have cats.
- 59:10If you have cats that are jumping and that will kind of
- 59:14eat those plants. And so tying that in, I've
- 59:18learned to do a couple different things to kind of if I was a
- 59:23planned parent and I had pets that are getting into my plants,
- 59:27I'm hanging my plants. That's a very good way to do it.
- 59:31You can get very, very creative with some shelving spaces above
- 59:35ground for, you know, if you obviously your dogs or your, you
- 59:39know, if you have a pig or whatever, they're not gonna get
- 59:43up on the higher show. I actually.
- 59:44Knew somebody that had a pet pig.
- 59:46Yeah, yeah. And there is no such thing as a
- 59:49teacup pig. They get big.
- 59:51They get big. I believe it.
- 59:52I believe it. Yeah.
- 59:53So there's a few different ways, you know, like the picture
- 59:56frame. People picture frame their TV's.
- 59:59I picture frame plants. Tell us about that.
- 1:00:03You can DIY take out, get a regular picture frame, take out
- 1:00:06the glass, take out all of that stuff.
- 1:00:08You've got hooks. You can order them Amazon, IKEA,
- 1:00:12whatever. And you're drilling that
- 1:00:15circular hook into the wall. Make sure it's mounted properly
- 1:00:20and you're putting a picture frame around it and you just
- 1:00:24drop, you just drop a plant inside of it and now you have a
- 1:00:27picture frame plant. It's on a wall.
- 1:00:29It can be, it's, it's art and your pets can't get a hold of
- 1:00:34it. So for pet owners, I would
- 1:00:36definitely say figure out different creative ways to get
- 1:00:39them just away from the ground and in places that your pets
- 1:00:44can't reach them. And if you do want them in
- 1:00:47places that your pets can reach them, make sure they're pet
- 1:00:51friendly house plants because it's a lot less harmful to your
- 1:00:55pets. If they were to chew on it,
- 1:00:58yeah, my cats like to chew the tops of my plants.
- 1:01:01Yeah, they didn't get ahold of that.
- 1:01:03But anything that's wispy, yeah, they will chew the top off.
- 1:01:07Yeah, there are some things, you know, you can spray some like
- 1:01:10apple cider vinegar on like your plants, the soils and things
- 1:01:15like that to try to keep them away from just like.
- 1:01:17And it doesn't harm the. Plant either it won't harm,
- 1:01:19yeah, so it won't harm the plants like on top of the soil
- 1:01:23and stuff like that to just keep them away from it and maybe just
- 1:01:27like introduce it to them more. Yeah, obviously pet friendly
- 1:01:30ones. So they're like normalized with
- 1:01:32them. Like they were creatures of
- 1:01:35habits. Pets are creatures of habits
- 1:01:37too. So the more they're used to
- 1:01:38something, the less curious they are about them.
- 1:01:41Yeah, that's a good idea. Let me ask you, let's go back to
- 1:01:45this checkerboard washable rug. I love that.
- 1:01:48And I noticed that's also in your plant store.
- 1:01:52Yes, only plants. Yeah.
- 1:01:55So tell us about checkerboard and why checkerboard?
- 1:01:59Okay, so I chose checkerboard because I started wanting
- 1:02:03character and personality into my space, a little bit of
- 1:02:06character and I love green and but I don't want to be overly
- 1:02:11aggressive with green. I want a close space, but I want
- 1:02:14to, I want it open up too. So something about checkers
- 1:02:18bring a little bit of character. They're, you know, you walk into
- 1:02:21my house, I think. It's a classic.
- 1:02:22Look, yeah, you can go in. It's simple, but it's also an
- 1:02:26attention drawer so you can notice the details on it.
- 1:02:29And so oddly enough, when I was painting my bedroom, that's
- 1:02:34where it first after I had that rug and I'm like, I wonder what
- 1:02:37this would look like. So one of my walls, half of it,
- 1:02:41it's checkered. So I have did you?
- 1:02:43Paint it up there yourself, OK? I have Evergreen walls and my
- 1:02:48friend helps. He's a painter so he's helping
- 1:02:51me paint. It was tedious and it's making
- 1:02:54testers like they're tape. Everything on.
- 1:02:56Everything. Yeah.
- 1:02:57And he's painted the whole room Evergreen and I have this middle
- 1:03:03strip and I had to map it out because I have a window still.
- 1:03:07So the the ends of the window still are checkered and I'm
- 1:03:11measuring and taping everything 1 by 1 and I'm still going while
- 1:03:18he finished the whole painting the whole room.
- 1:03:21But at the end he at the end of it, it was amazing.
- 1:03:24And I was like, wow, I love that because it's so simple.
- 1:03:27It's so classic, but it brings so much character to the space.
- 1:03:31Modern, even though it's a classic look, you know, with the
- 1:03:35checkerboard, it's very modern and it's very in right now, but
- 1:03:39I don't think it ever goes out either.
- 1:03:41It's not too much. Yeah, it's not too much.
- 1:03:43It's clean, It's creative. It's it's a fun DIY too, You
- 1:03:47know, people come in. And so when I went into the shop
- 1:03:50again, that little slit of that little slit in between the
- 1:03:56shelves, it reminded me of my bedroom because my bedroom has
- 1:04:01just that centerpiece. Yeah, I'm like, why not?
- 1:04:03Let's do it. So did that.
- 1:04:05And it's a nice little entryway that's like one of the first
- 1:04:08things you see when you walk into the shop.
- 1:04:11And so I think anybody can, if you're whether it's a checkered
- 1:04:15blanket, whether it's a checkered rug, whether it's a
- 1:04:18checkered wall, whatever the case may be, that's definitely
- 1:04:21something to play with that brings so much simplicity but
- 1:04:25character to your space. Yeah.
- 1:04:27And the other thing about checkerboard is you can mix that
- 1:04:29pattern with other patterns and it's it's pretty cool.
- 1:04:33What about like when you pulled the tape off?
- 1:04:35Isn't that so satisfying? Satisfying.
- 1:04:37So satisfying. So satisfying, yeah.
- 1:04:39So, yeah, if you're on the fence about painting A room, paint a
- 1:04:44room, tape, you know, tape it up.
- 1:04:48And it is satisfying to pull that tape off your trim.
- 1:04:52Yeah. I'll say do your research
- 1:04:54before, do your research before painting a checkered wall
- 1:04:59because it could be very tedious if you have like missteps or you
- 1:05:04think you can just like like it doesn't work like that.
- 1:05:07No, it's a block by block. Yes, block by yes, that's kind
- 1:05:11of hard to say block by block, but I have talking about
- 1:05:16checkerboards in my office. I have a checkerboard wall.
- 1:05:20It's like squares and circles, but it lays out checkerboard.
- 1:05:24I have no natural light in there, so I'm going to get a
- 1:05:26plant that I don't need natural light and I'm gonna get that
- 1:05:30light bulb you were telling us about.
- 1:05:32But yeah, it's my wall is white. And then it's, I think it's
- 1:05:36called yellow Finch. But that's the checkerboard and
- 1:05:39the circles and squares. And I had that in my old office
- 1:05:42too. And I love it.
- 1:05:45It just makes me happy. Now we're gonna add a plant in
- 1:05:48there. I know I'm gonna definitely add
- 1:05:50some more plants. Is there anything else you want
- 1:05:55to add today to design and plants that you want to let
- 1:06:01people know about? I would say one bringing plants
- 1:06:06into your space is designing right because they bring so much
- 1:06:09character, so much life into your space.
- 1:06:11I would say finding plants that kind of you resonate with make
- 1:06:16your space your space and be just being creative.
- 1:06:20I think with plants have allowed me to do so many Diys in my
- 1:06:24space, from the picture frames to hanging them to designing
- 1:06:28shelving spaces to the books that I no longer read.
- 1:06:32I use them to as a. Plant stand.
- 1:06:34Yeah, right. And so I think you can create so
- 1:06:38much, you know, you can create a home with plants and you can
- 1:06:42style with plants, you know, small plants on coffee tables,
- 1:06:46you can terrariums on coffee tables.
- 1:06:49Let's talk about terrariums. Do you do those too?
- 1:06:51I do. Do you sell those at your shop?
- 1:06:54I will start to, I will more so do classes, the community based
- 1:06:59aspects. So I do want to be hands on.
- 1:07:01So moving into the space, we will start selling terrariums
- 1:07:05kits so they can do them. We won't start having terrarium
- 1:07:09classes and everything. They're really simple.
- 1:07:12Jason, my editor, I had made him terrarium.
- 1:07:17Terrarium or oddly, one of the easiest plants, easiest looking.
- 1:07:22They're really low maintenance once they're settled because
- 1:07:25you've got that sealed right there.
- 1:07:27So like it keeps all that humidity in there.
- 1:07:30You don't have to water it often.
- 1:07:31You know, last time I checked in with him, he was like, I haven't
- 1:07:34watered this thing for two months and.
- 1:07:36It's so striving. Right.
- 1:07:38Because it's got a cover on it. And even if it's an open one, it
- 1:07:41still keeps a lot of humidity in there.
- 1:07:44And so I think terrariums are very clean.
- 1:07:48It's like. It's own little ecosystem in
- 1:07:50there, yeah. So a lot of life and I always
- 1:07:53think you get, so you know, this one right now, for example, it's
- 1:07:56thriving, but it's also got a lot of character and it's, it
- 1:08:00adds to the space. It does, and if we were to take
- 1:08:02it away, it's like it takes away the color and everything from
- 1:08:07the space. This.
- 1:08:08My friend Lori actually does these terrariums at her house.
- 1:08:13She has I think three or four. One is she has a fish in one.
- 1:08:18Yep. So it like acts as a fish.
- 1:08:20Tank. Yeah, you can have living
- 1:08:22creatures in there. You can have snails, snails,
- 1:08:25frogs. You can have little bugs.
- 1:08:28There's a lot of stuff you can do.
- 1:08:30Yeah, with terrariums you can make I, when I was at plant, the
- 1:08:34last plant kind of I was at, we made DIY terrariums.
- 1:08:39We all, so we all had like 10 minutes to go find, you know,
- 1:08:42and build our own terrariums and you can get so creative with
- 1:08:46them. And every single one was
- 1:08:48completely different because everyone has.
- 1:08:50Yeah, everybody. Was like some were desert ones.
- 1:08:53I had a I'm like an aesthetic person.
- 1:08:55I had found some spinning base that from a plant, from a plant
- 1:09:02pot, it was a spinning one. I took the top off and I had put
- 1:09:05like a like a cowboy base in there and then just like almost
- 1:09:11made it like a Western theme. But it's like spinning and you
- 1:09:14know, so you can get creative with terrariums and it I think
- 1:09:17it gives like it's, it's a good conversation starter, right?
- 1:09:20It really is. And everything too.
- 1:09:22I like the idea of like, is it like a Lazy Susan that it sits
- 1:09:26on that's spinning? OK.
- 1:09:28I like that for like a dining table or breakfast table.
- 1:09:33Yeah. And it does.
- 1:09:35I mean, that is a great conversation piece and it's a
- 1:09:37great accessory, yes. It is.
- 1:09:40I'm going to tell her. I wonder if she knows about a
- 1:09:42Lazy Susan for this, this particular one.
- 1:09:46She has all, like all these different glass vases.
- 1:09:48And these are just simple glass vases that she bought.
- 1:09:52And then these things are. Those are just decorative wood
- 1:09:58spheres that you put in a bowl. Yeah.
- 1:09:59She used it for a top. Yeah.
- 1:10:02So you really could just get it out of nothing.
- 1:10:04Any type of vase, any size and go from there.
- 1:10:09Yeah, no, I definitely, yeah. I think just try it.
- 1:10:12I think there's a lot of different ways now that I am so
- 1:10:16embedded in styling plans that, you know, when I speak, I speak
- 1:10:20on. I don't, I don't speak on
- 1:10:22teaching people how to take care of plans.
- 1:10:24I teach people how to take care of themselves.
- 1:10:25So I do my speaking sessions. On.
- 1:10:28Those an environment, so how plant care shapes our self-care,
- 1:10:31for example. So I think there's so many
- 1:10:33different ways that you can introduce plants, your space.
- 1:10:35You brought up flowers earlier. I used to always bring flowers
- 1:10:38into my home and I would always have flowers in my home.
- 1:10:42I'm on a ikabana kick right now. What's that?
- 1:10:45An ikabana? It's like a Japanese flora
- 1:10:47arrangement style with like we have like a frog in like a bowl.
- 1:10:50Like a bowl. Oh.
- 1:10:51I saw you make this arrangement from Trader Joe's.
- 1:10:54Yes. That was cool and my friends are
- 1:10:56like in and out, my friends, my friends are in and now I was
- 1:11:00introduced to it and I love it. Say the name again.
- 1:11:03Ikabana. Ikabana yeah, I like that.
- 1:11:05I love that I'm. Gonna say cabana.
- 1:11:07This weekend, something. You know, but my friends are all
- 1:11:10into it now and they're like, can you host an Icobana?
- 1:11:13Nice. Or we'll go to Trader Joe's, get
- 1:11:15all these flowers, But they all have to go out into the wild,
- 1:11:19thrift their bowls, select their bowls, and they come in and
- 1:11:23everybody does everything. Funny enough, the last one we
- 1:11:27did when all our friends got together, the guys that are
- 1:11:31like, we're not doing this. They're they were into it more
- 1:11:35than everybody else. It was the, it's always the
- 1:11:38people that are like, we're not doing this.
- 1:11:40So and again, that brings, you know, you're bringing your
- 1:11:43plants indoors in a different way that you normally wouldn't
- 1:11:45see. So I think just don't be scared
- 1:11:48of bringing plants in your home. And if you have any question,
- 1:11:51you know, the people who shop at only plants, they have our phone
- 1:11:55number and it's a, we make it an, you know, we have Apple
- 1:11:58products so they can text us. They can.
- 1:12:01Send us pictures, you know, you can always just, you know, shoot
- 1:12:04us a message and you know, we tell them how to take care of
- 1:12:07them and things like that. So I think don't be scared to
- 1:12:11have plants in your home. They elevate your home not only
- 1:12:15in the physical aspect, not only as a decorative aspect, but in
- 1:12:18mental aspects as well because you have a lot of wins for them
- 1:12:21too. Let's circle back to the
- 1:12:25self-care because that's so important right now in design
- 1:12:29and like even in furnishings, you know, we think about that
- 1:12:33and just Wellness for people, like what mattress they sleep on
- 1:12:38their pillows. We even have these massage
- 1:12:40chairs that that would be great for a plant room.
- 1:12:43Yeah, one of those amazing massage chairs.
- 1:12:46I wouldn't leave. I know I could.
- 1:12:47I could. I could envision them.
- 1:12:50I. Wouldn't we need to?
- 1:12:51Yes, they're awesome. So that's that's a big deal.
- 1:12:56And then like furniture that has built in speakers and massage
- 1:13:02and, you know, just all those other features just to have more
- 1:13:06self-care and just really be able to relax in your home.
- 1:13:11We're big on that right now and we'll be for a long, long time
- 1:13:15to come. But talk to us about self-care
- 1:13:18and plants. Yeah.
- 1:13:20Just touch on that. Yeah, I think plants have me
- 1:13:25personally taught me to be a better nurturer, right?
- 1:13:28And it has also taught me a lot about the things that the
- 1:13:31attention that I give plants, I normally neglect them myself,
- 1:13:34right? Yeah.
- 1:13:35So it's led me to switch even just how I create content
- 1:13:40instead of just educating on plants.
- 1:13:41I always do a plant care self-care combination.
- 1:13:44So whether that's relating growth, you know, plant growth
- 1:13:48to self growth, plant neglect to personal neglect, right.
- 1:13:54You know, one of the most recent one I did is like cutting them
- 1:13:57off for example. I saw that one, that was
- 1:13:59beautiful. I think what we have, you know,
- 1:14:02when you're looking at a trailing plant like a pothos, a
- 1:14:04lot of people get so, so scared to just prune them because
- 1:14:07they're like they. Think they're going to kill it?
- 1:14:09They're going. To kill it.
- 1:14:10But they're actually encouraging that plant to create new growth
- 1:14:13and probably healthier growth because more often than not,
- 1:14:16once you prune them, those leaves come back bigger and
- 1:14:18stronger, right? And within our personal self,
- 1:14:21you know, within our personal growth and self, there's a lot
- 1:14:25of things personally that we probably should let go.
- 1:14:28That we're always so timid and so scared.
- 1:14:29It's like the what ifs and we don't let them go.
- 1:14:32We don't prune them, we don't cut them off.
- 1:14:35But it's needed. It's it's needed cutting, you
- 1:14:40know, pruning is needed for growth in any aspect.
- 1:14:44So you learn so many things. You learn, You know, if you
- 1:14:48ever, if you ever want to know how I'm truly doing, ask me how
- 1:14:52my plants are doing. If my plants are going through
- 1:14:55it, I'm probably going through it too, right?
- 1:14:58And so they teach you so many things.
- 1:15:00Just, you know, the, the root of things, right?
- 1:15:03If your roots are rotting, the base of your plants rotting, the
- 1:15:06plants probably not doing too well.
- 1:15:09So if you feel like you're rotting away or you know, you're
- 1:15:12not thriving, there's probably just some of those basic, you
- 1:15:16know, grounding things that you need to do.
- 1:15:17What's the first thing you do in the morning, right?
- 1:15:20Or you just like right on your phone getting out of the house?
- 1:15:23Or are you like sitting down in the dark for like 5 minutes?
- 1:15:26It's like being grounded. Are you reading a book before
- 1:15:29you get out? So I think planned care teaches
- 1:15:33us so much about growth in so many ways.
- 1:15:36Like, you know, you're, you're new to plans and I bet every
- 1:15:39single time you see a, some new growth, you're probably thrilled
- 1:15:42and you're probably so proud of and you're proud of that.
- 1:15:45But how often do you wake up and you're like, you know what I
- 1:15:49took on today and I did something I haven't thought I
- 1:15:52would do in a very long time. And you celebrate yourself in
- 1:15:55the same way, right? And so though it's taught me
- 1:15:58I'm, I do a lot of things that I probably should celebrate and I
- 1:16:02never celebrate. And planning care, for example,
- 1:16:05has taught me to learn to start celebrating myself, rewarding
- 1:16:08myself and thinking about just how I take care of myself, how I
- 1:16:12take care of my people in a whole different light too.
- 1:16:15So I'm a big believer in planning care, of being
- 1:16:18self-care on any given day. And so if you're trying to
- 1:16:23figure out how to take care of yourself, if you're trying to
- 1:16:26figure out how to take care of somebody else or you don't, if
- 1:16:29you don't know how to take care of yourself, get a plant.
- 1:16:32That plant will teach you, if you can take care of that plant,
- 1:16:34it'll teach you how to take care of yourself because you learned
- 1:16:37so much about them. And when you look at the analogy
- 1:16:40of plants, it's pretty similar to how we are, and they shape us
- 1:16:45too. Yeah, yeah, I think you're
- 1:16:47right. It's really interesting because
- 1:16:50self-care is, I mean, we all need that right now, right?
- 1:16:55And like, it really starts at home.
- 1:16:57It does it. Does and like your surroundings
- 1:17:00are so important to yourself care and something that I did,
- 1:17:05and maybe this is because I have plants now, I don't know.
- 1:17:09But but one thing that I'm doing in the mornings is I'm slowing
- 1:17:13it down a little bit. Well, the first thing I do, I
- 1:17:16get up, I look at my plants and, you know, if they need water,
- 1:17:19I'll water them. But I always, you know, open my
- 1:17:21windows for my plants and I take care of my animals.
- 1:17:25That's first thing I do is the animals and then myself.
- 1:17:28But I I put a bar stool upstairs in my loft area where my window
- 1:17:36is and I have a great view of the mountains and I just take a
- 1:17:39few minutes and sit there and enjoy the mountains.
- 1:17:43Yeah. I think that leads into, I think
- 1:17:46all of everything we've talked about today and just, you know,
- 1:17:51curating your space. I think your furniture is so
- 1:17:55important. Your home is so important.
- 1:17:57How you curate your home is so important because your home
- 1:18:01should be a safe space. It should be a safe haven.
- 1:18:04It should be a place for you to be able to reflect, to
- 1:18:06celebrate, to mourn and all of that, all of those things.
- 1:18:10So choosing the right pieces of furniture, choosing the right
- 1:18:14the right style. Do you want something modern?
- 1:18:16Do you want something simple? Do you want you know, I I love
- 1:18:19an organized chaos. You know, what kind of finding
- 1:18:23the right furniture plants to just style your space and curate
- 1:18:28that perfect home for you to kind of to it helps elevate your
- 1:18:32mind. It helps elevate your life and
- 1:18:34you want to be you want to be in your home.
- 1:18:37A you know, I'm I will always I love being home because the way
- 1:18:43you know, when I walk in and I turn all my lamps on, I don't
- 1:18:46want to leave. So when my friends are like hey.
- 1:18:48The lamps are on. He's not going out.
- 1:18:50I'm not, you know, I'm like, ah, you know, it makes it hard for
- 1:18:54me to leave my house because I've spent so much time curating
- 1:18:57it. Yeah.
- 1:18:57Where before I'm like. When I think that's why people
- 1:19:01are coming back to having friends over in their home,
- 1:19:06sitting in a dining room, eating a meal together, playing a game
- 1:19:09or bingo, plant bingo. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:19:13I think home is definitely where it's at now.
- 1:19:16That's our safe, cozy space. Yeah.
- 1:19:20Yeah. No, I host AI host a guy's wine
- 1:19:25and steak night every single month.
- 1:19:27You do. Oh wow.
- 1:19:28That for example, so it's like so nice because as a as a guy, I
- 1:19:34like the girlies. I can't, I have nothing on the
- 1:19:36girlies because the girlies, they have the best styling decor
- 1:19:41and everything. But I can still have all the
- 1:19:42guys over. And because I've taken time to
- 1:19:45curate my home, I don't, I don't have to like, oh, I don't have
- 1:19:50the proper stools. I don't have the right spacing
- 1:19:52arrangement. They can still come and if it
- 1:19:55feels cozy and like the guys are like the girls, we're just like
- 1:19:58the girls and like we're living in a very just like stylish
- 1:20:01environment and cozy environment.
- 1:20:04And it's nice, right? And so IA 100% think, yeah, like
- 1:20:09curate that to be like whatever you do, like curate your home to
- 1:20:13be a reflection of you, of a reflection where you know you
- 1:20:17want your family and friends to be in and you want to be in a
- 1:20:21place that you don't want to leave or anything like that.
- 1:20:23I love that you do that and have people over.
- 1:20:27I yeah, we all need to have more community, have people into our
- 1:20:32homes, have our friends over and just really enjoy each other's
- 1:20:36company. And yeah, home's where it's at.
- 1:20:41Home is here. Everyone for sure.
- 1:20:44For sure. Well, it was really great
- 1:20:46talking to you, and I feel like I've learned quite a bit about
- 1:20:51plants. I can't wait to come to your
- 1:20:52shop. Yeah.
- 1:20:55Where is your shop? I know you said Dairy Block, but
- 1:20:57do you have an actual address that you can tell everyone and
- 1:21:00where to find you? Yes, so so only plants is
- 1:21:04located inside of the free market on the dairy block and so
- 1:21:10it's eighteen O 1 Blake St. Blake St.
- 1:21:13So walk on in there you'll find it.
- 1:21:17It's really easy hard to miss online.
- 1:21:20I can be found at on Instagram it's K under score WOSIE.
- 1:21:27On TikTok it's K under score WOS.
- 1:21:31But if you go on any platform and you search Plant Daddy, I'm
- 1:21:35sure at some point you'll probably find me within a couple
- 1:21:38of seconds. OK, that works.
- 1:21:40Too. Yeah, and your new address,
- 1:21:43you'll update us on that too? So my new address will remain
- 1:21:46just about the same. The unit number.
- 1:21:49I'm not. I'm probably not in the same
- 1:21:51place. Yeah, it's in the same exact
- 1:21:52place. It's probably less than 20 feet
- 1:21:55away from where it currently is. So moving into May, it'll
- 1:22:00everything will be moved into the new space and it really
- 1:22:04would just be more plants, but it's going to be designed as
- 1:22:10more of kind of what we talked about.
- 1:22:12I will have like lounging areas for people to just come in, hang
- 1:22:18out with the plants, they can work, they can hang out with
- 1:22:21their friends, they can go on a cute little date and.
- 1:22:25All in your. Space, All in the space we can.
- 1:22:27We'll host plant bingos in there, we'll have repotting
- 1:22:30classes and we might even have styling classes.
- 1:22:34How to style? You know how to style your space
- 1:22:37with plants and things. Do you have a bookshelf in
- 1:22:39there? We have tremendous amount of
- 1:22:42shelves. I do have a center.
- 1:22:44It's a huge centerpiece that is a mega bookshelf.
- 1:22:48OK, so you you're going to have, you know, your record players,
- 1:22:52your books and a little bit of everything in there to where it
- 1:22:55is a lot cozier and not just plant, not just like a not just
- 1:22:59a plant shop, it's a space where you can come and just.
- 1:23:03It's like a second home. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:06OK. Well, that's awesome.
- 1:23:07I can't wait to come and visit you there.
- 1:23:10And then I one more question. I know we're running out of
- 1:23:13time, but if someone has a plant emergency, if one of their
- 1:23:18plants is just not looking good, can they bring it into your shop
- 1:23:22and show it to you and get some? Advice.
- 1:23:24Yes. Gary, do you have a plant
- 1:23:26hospital? For 1850, No, I'm joking.
- 1:23:28No, I'm joking I am we're big on educating people and we're very
- 1:23:33solution oriented. And so for no additional cost,
- 1:23:38if anyone ever has any plant questions, plant issues, that's
- 1:23:42what I do on a daily basis. I help people like bring their
- 1:23:46plants alive, you know, keep keep them alive, bring them back
- 1:23:49to life. Or I may just.
- 1:23:51One for you, yeah. Or I may just say this one is a
- 1:23:55goner, right? It's not coming back, but they
- 1:23:59can always come into the shop. And Daria is a plant expert.
- 1:24:04I'm a plant expert. And so we're, we're always happy
- 1:24:07and willing to help navigate any of that.
- 1:24:11And you don't need to buy a plant.
- 1:24:12You can just come in and even if it is from a different plant
- 1:24:16shop down the street, they can come in.
- 1:24:18They could come in and get some free plant advice or they can
- 1:24:21always DM us. You know, like I mentioned, we
- 1:24:24have customers and people send us pictures all the time about
- 1:24:27their plans and they ask questions about them and it's a
- 1:24:31we're a response, a text and e-mail away.
- 1:24:34I barely check my e-mail, Daria does, but we're a text, e-mail,
- 1:24:39phone call, FaceTime, DM away from helping you save your plans
- 1:24:45and keeping them alive. I love it.
- 1:24:47I love it. I think you guys are just doing
- 1:24:51great there. It's just going to be a
- 1:24:53wonderful place to visit. Yeah, Yeah.
