- 1:47Good evening, good evening, good evening, and welcome to another episode
- 1:51of delay but not denied The podcast in conjunction with the Crew podcast. This
- 1:57is a bonus episode tonight and tonight, I would like to bringing the gaps
- 2:06between people, you know, with transgender and heterosexual people. I would like
- 2:14to bring us all together and bridge the gap. What is transgender? Transgender
- 2:22by definition, is a person whose gender identity differs from the sex that was
- 2:28assigned to them at birth, maybe abbreviated to trans. A transgender man is
- 2:32someone with a male gender identity and a female birth assigned sex. A transgender
- 2:38woman is someone with a female gender identity and a male birth assigned sex.
- 2:46So let's get into it. The topic may be a little heavy, but
- 2:53I ask in respect for my friend and my guests, please be respectful.
- 2:58If you can't be, please just go ahead and log out now because we
- 3:02don't need that negativity. So, without further ado, Gabel, are you
- 3:07there? What's so? What's so? What's going on with you? I'm
- 3:15good, I'm good. I can't complain. So before we dive into it,
- 3:21can I get you to introduce yourself. My name is Shinnon Gabel and
- 3:27I'm trained mail, thirty five years old and I'm in two years in transition.
- 3:35Okay, so when did you know that you were not in what we
- 3:44would say, the right body. Honestly, I told my mom when I
- 3:49was eleven and I was a little boy, and honestly, my family just
- 3:54laughed and was like, I was confused that I just like girls. Let's
- 3:59see, maybe that is it. But I knew that I knew that it
- 4:05wouldn't meet right. Yeah, because the first time I actually met you,
- 4:15and you probably don't even remember, but you worked in the mall, at
- 4:18the barbershop in Westgate Mall. We had been Facebook friends for a while,
- 4:24but that was the first time I actually got to meet you face to face.
- 4:30And yeah, I bumped into you. You were coming out and I
- 4:35was like walking through and I spoke to you or whatever. But I just
- 4:42want to bridge the gap between the heterosexual people and the trans community, because
- 4:51at the end of the day, we all have feelings where all, you
- 4:57know, we all have a heart. We all you know, we're all
- 5:00going through this light together, us trans, US, lbgt Q. We
- 5:08are still people. We are still the same person before we came out,
- 5:13after we came We're still the same person. Right, So, has anyone
- 5:18ever asked you as far as you trans transsitioning into a male if you were
- 5:28a lesbian, why not just be a lesbian and go on with life.
- 5:32Has anybody ever asked you why you felt the need to at first? When
- 5:39when I when I mentioned to my family that I was about the transition,
- 5:44it was like, why you've been gay this whole time? And I was
- 5:47like, but that's the point I've been telling y'all I'm not gay. And
- 5:50it's like and they're literally looking at me. I apologize about my language,
- 5:56but literally they're literally looking at me like, nigga, you gay, you
- 5:59will feel males they're like females. And I'm like, no, I'm not
- 6:02do I'm not I'm a nigga. And they just look at me like okay.
- 6:08But as soon as they told me, I was like, you might
- 6:12as well. You like, women just stayed the same. We love you
- 6:15just how you are. I'm like, I'm not happy because when I look
- 6:17in the mirror, I want to see what I feel I should look like.
- 6:24Right, So yeah, So how is the transitioning going for you?
- 6:31You said it's been two years. It's been two years, and honestly,
- 6:36I love it. Man. I'm like a teenage boy. My wife constantly
- 6:42say that she got two teenage boys. And now I'm hyper hungry. I'm
- 6:46horny all day everywhere. I love. I love what I'm seeing because my
- 6:54faces became more masculine. My boys, my my chest, and I love
- 6:59my chest. And I haven't even had a top surgery yet, but I
- 7:02look everything is that's coming to it. And don't get me wrong, it
- 7:05do have its ups and downs. It's just the ups outweigh the downs,
- 7:11just like anything else. What would you consider to be the downside of it?
- 7:16Dysphoria? Dysphoria is a fucker like dystoria is when you feel like when
- 7:27you feel bad about yourself, like you're downing yourself. And and honestly,
- 7:33I'll be around a lot of six men, boring males, and I would
- 7:41look at myself and be like, maybe they could tell the difference, or
- 7:45maybe they could tell I was born female, you know, And it gets
- 7:48me in a in a funky moved right, Yeah, dysphoriors of mood surgeries
- 7:55are moved. But I haven't been through that yet, So we'll talk later
- 7:59when I get you did okay? Do you have that? Is that planned?
- 8:03Like in the nears? I am ready for it. I'm waiting to
- 8:07be approved by my doctor because I'm gonna name it. Okay, I am
- 8:11a blood blood transfusion before meeting and seeing is dangerous, so I had to
- 8:20get sea it's bass blood one time, so in your body only take not
- 8:24So it was like it was like, we don't know about that. But
- 8:26I'm waiting to get approved for it because honestly, I don't have much to
- 8:30take off. I'm like gonna when I take my shirt off, it looks
- 8:35like I was a bat boy that got small, right. I failure as
- 8:41far as like the surgery goes, other than taking away the brist what else
- 8:48is there to do as far as transitioning into a mail By the way,
- 8:56we take shots every day, if not every day, but every week of
- 9:00the rest, well, I take shots every week for the rest of my
- 9:03life. Okay. The bottom surgery. Being my wife, we already talked
- 9:09personally about the bottom surgery. Okay, I'm not into it because I feel
- 9:13like, if the what's the word I'm looking for, if the invention is
- 9:20not fully right, why would I Why would I? Just right, I
- 9:28ain't gonna have bottom surgery, but knit everything's need So being that you transitioned.
- 9:37How has the community around you? How? How do they treat you
- 9:45like family and friends? How were they beforehand? And and and now?
- 9:52Honestly, on the females, females, they might talk general, but then
- 9:56they still love you. They still come around. Right. It's different because
- 10:01even my clients, like they'll talk to me all you know, nice,
- 10:07being gentle and oh, you know, talk to me like I'm one of
- 10:11their homeboys. As soon as they find out that I was born female,
- 10:16It's a whole different weird vibe. And I'm like, dude, we're just
- 10:20chilling. What's wrong? And then like I don't know, it's like I
- 10:26got a diseases one. But with my with my brothers, like a couple
- 10:31of my brothers stopped talking to me because they feel like it's unnatural, shaky.
- 10:39I don't know. I guess because I'm fronting, you know, but
- 10:43my I guess they feel it's because it's unnatural and they just feel awkward around.
- 10:50So but I got a couple of brothers that love me no matter what,
- 10:54and they come around, talk to me, call me brother. On
- 10:58one of my brothers came in, introduced me to his wife and he was
- 11:01like telling your name and I was like peg and he was like no,
- 11:05no, no, no, no your name and I was like Gabriel.
- 11:09He was like that's it. And I was like, that's what's up man.
- 11:11That made me feel good. Yeah, you feel good? So are
- 11:15you? Are you planning to legally change your name? Yes, I'm working
- 11:20on that now. I'm changing it because I feel Shannon Shkaya it's somebody.
- 11:30Of course. I'm a proud Trains male. I'm proud, all right.
- 11:35I proudly accepted I was born female, right because I learned a lot of
- 11:41things from being a female. I learned how to be nursing, loving.
- 11:46I know how to tend to my wife. I know how to tend to
- 11:48my daughter. I know how to make sure my son is getting all the
- 11:50love that he needs. Even as a male, I know how to make
- 11:54sure he's getting loved too. Right. Yeah, yeah, I just I
- 12:05my bad. You could so like this was important for me because I have
- 12:15a heart for the people like I love everybody, and some of my closest
- 12:22people, like cousins and friends, they're they're gay or you know, transgender.
- 12:28I had a cousin that, for the majority of his life lived his
- 12:37life as a female and looking at him you would never know, like never
- 12:41know. I mean that was talking about there was no way. Yeah,
- 12:48I mean come out or did you just knew? So we knew. I'm
- 13:00gonna say her father stopped like dealing with her because she liked to dress like
- 13:07a female. You know, she she felt as she was a female on
- 13:13the inside. And the one thing that I will say that I hate is
- 13:20after she passed away, they buried her in men attire. Oh man,
- 13:28see that that's that was so disrespectful man. And I feel like it was
- 13:33a flap in the face too. She was because that's not how she lived
- 13:39home. Were so right, that was disrespectful her. One of them.
- 13:48Don't put me on a no girl and don't put me on nothing female.
- 13:52Right. One of the viewers watching acts if you were happy? Yes,
- 14:03yes, man. When I tell you, I'm the happiest I've ever been.
- 14:09And like I said, I'm thirty five. I don't I don't have
- 14:11a lot of experiences my whole life. I don't been around around the United
- 14:16States. I'm most type of the world, but around the United States.
- 14:22But yeah, I'm I'm very happy. Man. When I tell you I'm
- 14:26a happy husband with my kids. I naturally stable, mentally stable health.
- 14:35We're good. One of the baddest barbers ever. I appreciate it. And
- 14:41man, I look, I love my people. I look, man,
- 14:46I love my class too, So yeah, I can't complain. I'm I'm
- 14:50good. I'm just trying to get that black success to where I don't have
- 14:54to cut every day right? Right? Have you ever thought about like writing
- 15:00a book to share your story, you know, because there are people that
- 15:05are trying to figure out how they want to go about the transition like that.
- 15:15I mean, okay, I thought about that. I do have.
- 15:20I have a lot of clients that come in and they asked me how do
- 15:26I come out? And I tell them, if you feel like it's really
- 15:30for you, forget what everybody said, because if they're there for you,
- 15:33they're gonna be dere for you regardless. Why would why would it matter if
- 15:39they're not right? So I'll tell them come out. I actually thought about
- 15:45it before. Well, if you ever decide you want to write a book,
- 15:48please hit me up. I can put you own to somebody that will
- 15:52get you. I appreciate it. Writing a book is not hard. I
- 16:00wrote my first book when I found my biological family and I wrote it after
- 16:07my biological mother passed away. I will say, not everybody agreed with my
- 16:12book, and that's okay because it's my story, your story, So you
- 16:18know, just putting that out there. Whenever you decide to do it.
- 16:22You have a book, now, I you know what I mean, of
- 16:26course authors, but I never was able to get a hold of your book.
- 16:34So we're gonna get up on that because I'm we're trying to read.
- 16:37Yeah, and I'll take some points from you from your book. I got
- 16:42you and so you know this was important to me because again I care about
- 16:48people. I care about you, and you know your feelings mattered to me,
- 16:52like I don't. I don't like how people can smile in your face
- 16:59and then like be behind your back. Because I noticed when you changed your
- 17:03name on Facebook, and I don't say a lot, but I watched and
- 17:08so I've watched you transition from Shannon to Gabe, and I've watched how some
- 17:18people haven't decided to receive you in the way that you want to be received.
- 17:26I've seen the comments on pictures and I've seen people still say she her
- 17:33that part make that part, and I feel like, of course, some
- 17:38people say, hey, I don't be meaning to call you she, and
- 17:42I tell them, okay, it's okay, because at some point in the
- 17:47beginning when they say she, I create them hey is he right? See?
- 17:52But then when they start constantly doing it, I'll start calling them,
- 17:56hey, hey, what come in right? I'm not what And that's what
- 18:00I'm trying to tell you right right in the way they start getting it,
- 18:07even if I have to insult them a little bit because they've been insulting me,
- 18:11They'll end up getting it eventually, right, Because I mean, to
- 18:15me, it's like a slap in the face if if a person can't accept
- 18:21you for who you are, like, it doesn't change who you are.
- 18:26It doesn't make you any less of a friend, family member, sister,
- 18:30brother, cousin. You know, my physical just changed a little. Honestly,
- 18:34I looked like I could be shining his twin brother. Absolutely, that's
- 18:38it. Absolutely absolutely. How has all of this affected your wife? Man?
- 18:48So at first of all I told my wife. My wife was like,
- 18:52She's like, I don't think I want you going through that. She's
- 18:56like, because I love you how you are now? Right? And mind
- 19:00you my wife hetero. She's never been with LBGT anything. So when I
- 19:06first told her, she was like, I like you, how you are
- 19:08now? Right? And I was like, but I'm not happy with this
- 19:12body? Right. It was like, well, baby, you know what,
- 19:17I'm kind of nervous. And I was like why, and she said
- 19:18because she felt it was a most trans men that have a partner when they
- 19:26start transitioning, when once they start transitioning on that in the line, they
- 19:30don't end up with the same partner, right, right, So that's what
- 19:34she was nervous about. Right, And so I was like, girl,
- 19:37we've been together food at the time, it was c she is. I
- 19:40was like, I ain't nothing gonna change. She was like, all right,
- 19:42then, well let's joke. So once I did start taking my shots,
- 19:48she loved it. She love it being that. I do believe that
- 19:53you're one of the baddest barbers. Have you lost any clients? Have you
- 19:59lost any clientele because of your transition? Hell? I lost I lost a
- 20:07couple of females because they refused to say I'm a man. They they refused
- 20:11to call me he So, yeah, I lost a couple of but I
- 20:15also lost a couple of males because the people are weird these days, man,
- 20:22right, the males, they will do weird shit like hey, can
- 20:26I see it before a picture of you? Why? Why? Yeah?
- 20:33Or I had one coming to me constantly asking me questions about trains, so
- 20:37it had kind of threw me off, and I was like, dude,
- 20:40why are you almost asking me questions about trains? Like I understand if you're
- 20:44trying to be if you if you know the questions he would ask was like
- 20:49weird and uncomfortable questions, right, So then I blocked him. I blocked
- 20:56him so he couldn't book me no more. He ended up coming under somebody
- 21:00else's name. Wow, And I'm telling him, dude, no, I'm
- 21:04not. I'm not not to cut your hair. Dude, I don't feel
- 21:07comfortable with you, so no, and he's still like, come on,
- 21:11man, just cut my hair. No you you, I don't feel right
- 21:15with you. I said, I'm not. Everybody's barther. It is what
- 21:19it is. So then after he left, his brother ended up started coming,
- 21:23so I had to end up blocking his brother. Wow. Yeah.
- 21:30People are weird like the same way people treat in in my opinion, the
- 21:37same way people treat transgender people are the same way that they treat people with
- 21:41disabilities, Like they look at you strange because I was born with a birth
- 21:48defect. I have spina bifida, and I walk a little different, you
- 21:55know, And so that's like one of the first things that people notice about
- 21:59me and im And people noticed that. Yeah, people noticed that that when
- 22:04I'm talking and stuff, how and I'm dyslexic, so I say things weird
- 22:10and different, and yeah, that's what's it. But the thing about that,
- 22:15though gay, the people that love you, they don't care. I
- 22:18appreciate it, they don't care. I mean, that doesn't change who you
- 22:22are as a person. It doesn't change your heart. So you know,
- 22:26for those that they don't need it, you know, it's their loss.
- 22:30They're losing out on a fantastic friend. They're losing out on a beautiful family
- 22:37member. Also a bomb ass barber, so right right, you know,
- 22:48I just I want to see you be able to prosper in all that you
- 22:55put your hands in in a way that's comfortable for you and your family.
- 23:00I know you have children, and you know, protecting them and keeping them
- 23:07out of what I like to call grown folk is Another thing is people aggravate
- 23:12me with the whole kids. Then just because I'm training Mail, don't mean
- 23:17my son is gonna be gay, or because my or my daughter just because
- 23:22i'm transmil, don't mean my daughter's gonna not know who what a father is.
- 23:26Mad. I've been to my daughter's life since she was three three months.
- 23:30I'm the only male she know as father, right, and my daughter
- 23:37coming coming house, Papa, snack please? And and mind you she's none
- 23:41verbal, so so yes, and she's eight. So I tell them just
- 23:47because I'm training mail, don't mean my kids don't know what you know,
- 23:52don't mean my kids gonna be gayer. And because my son, he's very,
- 23:56very hetero, and he'll tell me sometimes I love women. I know.
- 24:03I know he just like me when I was younger. Oh my gosh,
- 24:06that's me all day. I want to ask you, what advice would
- 24:11you give to somebody, Let's say a young female that is preteen adolescent,
- 24:19that feels uncomfortable in their body and wants to try to have that conversation with
- 24:26their parents. What advice would you give them? Honestly, I would tell
- 24:33them it's okay to feel different. It is, but with you being a
- 24:38team and me also being a parent. Now I'm gonna kind of try to
- 24:44give you to write advice. Right, dress comfortable with don't of course,
- 24:49you ain't got to dress like a girl, but just wear some comfortable clothes
- 24:55until you're actually able to get up in get shots on your own. And
- 25:03that's at eighteen, so you an't got such a short time. It's maybe
- 25:07three years. You'll be able to get your shots and live your life how
- 25:11you want to. Honestly, they'll accept you either way. They'll accept you
- 25:17or they don't. If they don't, it's they're lost because you're beautiful.
- 25:19So and I know, you know, we don't often have people to tell
- 25:26us, you know, things like that to encourage us. But as your
- 25:30friend, I would like to encourage you to keep going, don't look back,
- 25:36keep your head up anytime. I mean, I I was born a
- 25:41female, I'm still a female, but I respect Yeah, I love it.
- 25:48And I mean, if you ever need me for anything, or you
- 25:52need to talk, even if it's just for somebody to talk to, and
- 25:57I just listened because you know, I may not always have the right things
- 26:03to say or whatever, but I'm here, and you know I want to
- 26:07offer that to you because you know that's black people. We don't have genuine
- 26:12people anymore, right, right, and that that sucks. They're really man,
- 26:18yes, and you know, look out for each other no more.
- 26:21And and it shouldn't even be that way because we are the people, right
- 26:23and we all we got basically, yeah, we are. We most hate
- 26:30it right, right, I say all the time, they love our rhythm,
- 26:36but they hate our blues. But I like that. I like that.
- 26:41I've never heard that and I liked that. Yeah, like that.
- 26:45But I'm not gonna hold you because I know that. You know, y'all
- 26:49get together and get the babies fed and put the bed and stuff to night
- 26:55is hairy pot of night. So we're about to put that on, uh
- 26:59the goblet of fire. So yeah, if somebody wants to reach out to
- 27:07you to talk to you about maybe their journey into uh trends, how can
- 27:15they reach you? If even if it's for a nice lineup, how can
- 27:21you be reached? You can either hit me up on a Facebook my name
- 27:26is Shannon Gabriel, a crazy or you can go ahead and personally message my
- 27:30my phone eight six four four zero six six six one three. That's my
- 27:36business number, and I answered it all the time takes back. You can
- 27:40you can hit me up and just want to talk. Ay, call me
- 27:42and we don't talk. We don't talk about something. I well, I
- 27:48do want to bring you back after you get your surgery done, and I
- 27:52wanna be able to keep up with what you got going on. So and
- 27:59I want to help you get this book real incause it needs to be written.
- 28:03I'm gonna be talking to you. Hey, I'm beginning on your nervous
- 28:06You'm like, oh man, this is really like yeah, I'm telling you
- 28:10I'm down with it. Yeah. Yeah, this is love. This is
- 28:12love, and I really I really appreciate this. This, I mean,
- 28:15God gave me a platform to be able to allow people to walk in their
- 28:22purpose, to speak their peace, and to do it all without judgment,
- 28:26because at the end of the day, the only person's judgment that matters is
- 28:32that of God. I mean true, you know, He's the one that
- 28:37gives us life. So and a lot of people like to tell me,
- 28:41oh, oh, your abomination and stuff like that, but I tell him,
- 28:45don't God know my journey before I know my journey? He does,
- 28:48Okay, there will go absolutely he knows you're every thought before you think it,
- 28:56so you know is that you know? So I would say, you
- 29:03know, the the naysayers and people that are negative, just give them,
- 29:08you know, tell them to get out of your space. I say,
