Transcript
- 0:02Welcome into a very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04I'm your host Bubba Starts, and with me today is McKenna Faith Winters.
- 0:07McKenna, welcome to the show.
- 0:09Yeah.
- 0:09Thanks for having me.
- 0:10It's a pleasure.
- 0:12Just getting to know each other off camera a little bit here.
- 0:15And I said, you know what?
- 0:16Let's just do it live.
- 0:17So why don't you go ahead and tell us a little bit about yourself, and then we'll get into all
- 0:22the fun stuff that you're up to.
- 0:24Yeah.
- 0:24So my name is McKenna Faith Winters.
- 0:26I'm a 17 year old country recording artist.
- 0:29I've been recording in Nashville for the last couple years.
- 0:32I've got 13 songs out right now.
- 0:35My last one came out about a week and a half ago or so, and it's really been growing from
- 0:41there.
- 0:41I've got tons of shows going on and more songs coming out and more being recorded.
- 0:46So, yeah, it's been a lot of fun.
- 0:48That's awesome.
- 0:49I wish I was that far along in my music career at 17, but I was still learning how to play.
- 0:55Yeah.
- 0:55Well, I can't even play the guitar.
- 0:57I can a little bit.
- 0:58We're getting there, but I don't musically wise, I'm I've never really grew up.
- 1:03Like, my family, they never did anything musically, so, it's a learning process.
- 1:07So mostly singer songwriter then?
- 1:10You're writing your own songs?
- 1:11Yes.
- 1:12I am starting to write my own songs.
- 1:13Yeah.
- 1:14Awesome.
- 1:15So how did you kinda get into the the music business then?
- 1:18You're still a very young lady.
- 1:20So Yeah.
- 1:21So I've always loved music.
- 1:23Singing in the car as a little girl.
- 1:25And then COVID hit, and my parents and I love singing.
- 1:29And my dad was like, hey.
- 1:30Let's just start posting videos.
- 1:31So we kinda made a little fancy room in my house for music and stuff.
- 1:36And I started posting videos during COVID, and it really has been growing from there.
- 1:42How fun.
- 1:43Way to take advantage of that time that time at home, and I'm sure you were probably out of
- 1:49school.
- 1:50And Yes.
- 1:50Mom and dad are going crazy going she won't stop singing all over the house.
- 1:55Yeah.
- 1:56We gotta make something out of this.
- 1:58So how cool.
- 1:59And now look at you.
- 2:00You're you're recording in Nashville and and all kinds of fun stuff.
- 2:04So where are you from, McKenna, without obviously being too specific?
- 2:08I'm from the Rockford area of Illinois.
- 2:10It's Northern Illinois.
- 2:11So, yeah, almost in Wisconsin.
- 2:13But yeah.
- 2:13Okay.
- 2:14Hey.
- 2:14I I I know the area well.
- 2:16So my family grew up in the South Suburbs of Chicago, Romeoville.
- 2:20So we would go through Rock Ford driving through, and and I passed through there, oh,
- 2:23not too long ago on tour myself.
- 2:25So Yeah.
- 2:26Know the area well.
- 2:28Love that.
- 2:29Are you having, a lot of success, obviously, finding gigs out there?
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:34Talk about some of the struggles you face as someone who doesn't play, you know, doesn't
- 2:39play an instrument necessarily yourself.
- 2:42Are you always touring with say a guitar player or something?
- 2:45Yeah.
- 2:45I am.
- 2:46It it took a while, but I found people that have become my family stuff.
- 2:49They've really helped me out as young artists.
- 2:52Another struggle I've had is I feel like a lot of places are like, oh my god.
- 2:56She's only 17.
- 2:57Like, she's probably not like, they never seen me before.
- 2:59You know?
- 2:59So it's sometimes hard to book gigs and stuff and shows.
- 3:02But I think I'm starting to prove myself around here.
- 3:05So yeah.
- 3:06That doesn't stop with age.
- 3:08Yeah.
- 3:09People will will always kinda doubt you until you build up that resume, till you can go,
- 3:14well, this is all the stuff that I've already done.
- 3:16So get used to that for a few more years, but you are rising rapidly.
- 3:22So you have guitar player.
- 3:25You say you have a band.
- 3:26You have all these band shows coming director of the band as well, or is one of these people
- 3:33that have now become family to you, do they kind of assume that role?
- 3:38I think they mostly assume the role.
- 3:40I mean, my dad's also kind of my manager too.
- 3:42He does a lot of the booking gigs and finding places to play.
- 3:45He also does a lot of my social media sometimes too to help me out because I'm still in school
- 3:49and all that.
- 3:50So yeah.
- 3:51Well, huge shout out to dad for helping his little girl in the music industry.
- 3:56I think most fathers that have a daughter that want to go into music are probably just trying
- 4:00to talk him out of it completely.
- 4:02Right.
- 4:03No.
- 4:04He's always grown up loving music too, so I think it's a lot that he loves too.
- 4:08Do you feel like you're kind of or that he rather is kinda living vicariously through your
- 4:14situation?
- 4:15I think so.
- 4:16Yeah.
- 4:16He just, he loves doing it.
- 4:19He loves, doing the traveling and talking to people, and he loves the music part of it too.
- 4:24That's awesome.
- 4:25So my dad, used to be in my band, but it was less of, like, supporting my son as was much
- 4:33more like my dad still wanted to party and be a rock star.
- 4:38So I'm very, very proud of of your dad for for doing that.
- 4:42It's not easy always, especially if you wanted to maybe have that dream but never got the
- 4:48chance to kind of step aside and to put anyone else up, you know, especially a a daughter or,
- 4:55you know, a son in my case.
- 4:57But, commendable.
- 4:58So, shout out to you, dad.
- 5:00You're probably in the background list.
- 5:03He just he just photobombed us in the mirror.
- 5:06I'm gonna let him know that.
- 5:07So that's awesome.
- 5:10So you got new songs coming out.
- 5:13You just released the new one a week and a half ago, you said.
- 5:17What?
- 5:17I mean, you you say country, but country is such a broad term these.
- 5:22Yeah.
- 5:22What kind of, I don't know, necessarily subgenre, but describe your music for me a
- 5:26little bit.
- 5:27It's very it's very pop country, I would say.
- 5:30Yeah.
- 5:30I've always grown up loving country music and pop and same, so it's kind of a great mixture
- 5:36for me.
- 5:36I've also a lot of people say that I have a good pop voice and country voice, so it kinda
- 5:41just works out.
- 5:43But that's mostly my music.
- 5:44I've got a couple of them are more poppy than country, but it's still a great vibe to have.
- 5:50So
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:51It's really hard to put a thumb on any musical genre these days anyway.
- 5:55Give us a couple of comps just for our listeners that haven't heard you yet.
- 5:59What what would be some comparable artists out there for you?
- 6:03I'd say Kelsey Ballerini, Averyana.
- 6:08Those are my two main that I've always listened to and grown up.
- 6:11Averyana, she's amazing.
- 6:13I've seen her in concert a few times now, but she's a person that I wanna be like and grow up
- 6:18to someday.
- 6:19So
- 6:21You have started writing your own music now.
- 6:25Talk about some of the, you know, the exciting points of your budding songwriting career now
- 6:32on top of singing.
- 6:34Yeah.
- 6:34It's really a learning process.
- 6:36I'm still young, so learning how to put things together.
- 6:39And I also my producer's in Nashville, so he's been helping me out a lot with that too and
- 6:44just teaching me the ways.
- 6:47I write with a lot of people in Nashville.
- 6:49Mostly been co writing for right now, but it's great to they help me learn a lot.
- 6:53So.
- 6:54Right.
- 6:54And that's exactly what it is.
- 6:55It's a it's a place to learn until you can stand on your own and feel like you're very
- 7:00confident.
- 7:01And I think not having an instrument that you're relying on to help you to kind of
- 7:06coordinate melodies and different things like that, it probably makes it a little tougher as
- 7:10well.
- 7:11You know, for me, I started writing poetry maybe at 12, 13 years old and then got a guitar
- 7:16at 13, 14, and it was like, oh, these things are perfectly aligned with each other, and it
- 7:22it just kind of came naturally to me.
- 7:25But I understand that it's not always not always the case.
- 7:28Some people come to this with different talents.
- 7:30So fantastic.
- 7:33How do you like working in Nashville?
- 7:35It's great.
- 7:36I love the place.
- 7:37We wanna move there soon.
- 7:38So after I graduate, that's our plan.
- 7:41It's an amazing place.
- 7:42It's the people down there are just so much different.
- 7:45It's easy to, like, become friends with people.
- 7:47It's amazing.
- 7:50Yes.
- 7:50And the only, you know, the only thing that could kind of give anyone pause is that, one,
- 7:56it's getting more and more expensive to live in Nashville.
- 7:58Right.
- 7:59And two, that you don't really make a ton of money playing gigs down there.
- 8:04So I have some good friends of mine that live in the Minneapolis area, and he's a you know,
- 8:10signed to a development deal or or some kind of distribution deal.
- 8:14So he works in Nashville quite a bit, but they spend a lot of time, you know, either driving
- 8:18down there or flying down to spend, you know, three, four days and then coming home and
- 8:23finding that as, like, the trade off because most of his gigs are in that Minneapolis area.
- 8:29You've spent twenty years or, you know, ten years building up this repertoire of gigs.
- 8:33It's really hard to uproot that and move away.
- 8:36Might be different for someone who maybe doesn't have all the experience, but talk about
- 8:40your scene in in that Rockford area.
- 8:42Are there a lot of gigs for someone like you around in that Illinois Wisconsin border?
- 8:49I mean, obviously, a lot of small town pubs and and things like that around, but is there
- 8:55places for you to go out and play and and maybe make a little bit more than tips?
- 8:59Yeah.
- 9:00So our Rockford area, like Illinois, we have a lot of musical talent here.
- 9:07It's been it's been easy to get to know people and get to booking here, but I would I get paid
- 9:17pretty good for that.
- 9:19It's not as much as people probably in other places, but it's more than tips and stuff.
- 9:24So I actually do get paid from a lot of the bars or festivals that I'm gonna be playing in
- 9:27this summer.
- 9:29But yeah.
- 9:31So the new album, did you print CDs for it and everything?
- 9:35Or
- 9:36It's not an album.
- 9:37I'm releasing singles right now, but I have I have CDs as for my six songs that I have out,
- 9:43but the rest we haven't done anything with yet.
- 9:45But I plan my own as, like, my focus right now.
- 9:48It's kinda it's getting a lot of streams, actually.
- 9:50I've got, I've gained about 5,000 Spotify listeners in the last week and a half or so.
- 9:57Holy cow.
- 9:58Yeah.
- 9:58It's growing a lot.
- 9:59Can you teach me?
- 10:04That's, you know, my music career to to some extent has taken a a a backseat this last, oh,
- 10:11just over a year we've been doing the podcast because I find so much more value in my day to
- 10:17day having these kind of conversations and, putting that out there as my as my content.
- 10:23Right?
- 10:24It it than just kind of putting my songs out there.
- 10:28And I feel it's a little less demoralizing when nobody's listening to the podcast for whatever
- 10:32reason.
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:35But we're hitting our stride here too.
- 10:36We just passed a 150,000 views on YouTube.
- 10:39That's great.
- 10:40Yeah.
- 10:40I mean, we were at a few thousand at the April, and then things just started to move straight
- 10:45up.
- 10:45So I'm sure you're kinda feeling that rush too where it's like, oh my god.
- 10:48Yeah.
- 10:48Yeah.
- 10:495,000 new people in a week listening to your music.
- 10:52That's incredible.
- 10:53Did you get any kind of playlist placement, or is this just kind of an organic thing where
- 10:58It is.
- 10:59Your song is resonating?
- 11:00Yeah.
- 11:00I I have gotten some playlist it's been added to.
- 11:03Sometimes it's random, but there has been a few.
- 11:07That's I I'm so out of it.
- 11:10I started to dip into it when I was releasing a couple singles in '23 and '24, and it was just
- 11:16like, man, I'd I'm just not I'm not into it because I don't I'm 39.
- 11:20I just turned 39, McKenna.
- 11:22So I'm much further along in my career Yeah.
- 11:25Than you are.
- 11:26And getting attention for a song that I wrote twenty years ago, right, when I was a
- 11:31completely different human being, it just didn't really ring for me.
- 11:35But, you know, thankfully for me, you know, and extremely grateful to have found podcasting and
- 11:42to have an idea like the scene projects that is about building a community.
- 11:47It's not about me getting famous, you know, talking and being Joe Rogan.
- 11:51It's about me supporting young artists like McKenna Faith Winters and having them on at the
- 11:57beginning of their careers to, you know, educate a little bit, but also share your art
- 12:02with the world.
- 12:03We do songwriter showcases.
- 12:05We have, you know, now a mixtape playlist that we're building as well to to just get our
- 12:11artists out there.
- 12:12We won an award recently for content creator of the year from the Midwest Country Music
- 12:17Organization, which if you're not a member, I would highly suggest that, and I'll get you
- 12:22some info when we when we get off here.
- 12:24But it's it's about community.
- 12:28And it sounds like you got some great people around you that have been really supportive of
- 12:32that, you know, starting obviously with dad being behind you every step of the way here.
- 12:39What is what's your goal for the next year?
- 12:42I'm assuming that you're graduating next year or do you okay.
- 12:45I'm a You're you're you'll be a senior.
- 12:48And so what's kind of the goals for the next twelve months to obviously, you can't, you
- 12:54know, go on full fledged tours and and leave just yet, But what what does the next twelve
- 13:00months look like for you, McKenna?
- 13:02Kind of like you said, like building a community, get building people that follow
- 13:06along and are just your fans and are there for you.
- 13:10That's a big part of being a small artist is the people that are there have been your number
- 13:15one fan since the start.
- 13:18Also, I mean, booking more gigs as much as possible, it's a big thing to do.
- 13:22Playing live, playing original music for people, which I have a festival that's just for
- 13:27that that I'll be playing in July July or, I think, August.
- 13:32I'm not exactly sure the date.
- 13:33But building community is the biggest part that you can do for a young artist, helping me grow.
- 13:40And yeah.
- 13:41I also I did forget to mention this.
- 13:43I got nominated for, I think, three Josie Awards down in Nashville for the independent
- 13:48artist.
- 13:48It's hosted at the Grand Ole Opry this year, so I will be going to that in November.
- 13:54That's fantastic.
- 13:55I got quite a few friends.
- 13:57I'll send you a list of people you need to go introduce yourself to while you're down
- 14:00there.
- 14:01Cool.
- 14:01Most of them Midwest Country Music Organization members as well.
- 14:05That is a, a a big part of our world was finding that community and then building our
- 14:10own community.
- 14:11We started the Midwest Original Music Organization for the simple fact that most of
- 14:17my world is not in the country world.
- 14:19I was kind of a rock artist, but I have a lot of friends that are in hip hop and other
- 14:23genres.
- 14:24And I wanted to kinda open a a a community to all musicians and all kinds of songwriters.
- 14:30So, yeah, we we'd love to have you as part of that community as well and to just continue to
- 14:36watch you grow.
- 14:39Yeah.
- 14:39Thank you.
- 14:40And I am a part of that, actually.
- 14:42Okay.
- 14:42Fantastic.
- 14:43Yeah.
- 14:43You know what?
- 14:44I I do so many of these interviews now.
- 14:46I've lost track.
- 14:47Last year, everyone I interviewed was MCMI.
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:50Right?
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:51And now it's become like, oh, wow.
- 14:53These tentacles have gone up.
- 14:54I don't even know I don't know any of these names on the on the interview list anymore, and
- 14:59it's a beautiful thing.
- 15:00So I will be watching for your name and our breakout artist for our award show next year,
- 15:06and you have already gotten my vote, McKenna.
- 15:09So kudos to you.
- 15:11Keep it up.
- 15:12Go ahead and plug all your stuff for me before I let you get out of here.
- 15:16Yeah.
- 15:16So you guys can find me on McKenna Faith Winter's music, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook.
- 15:22Those are my three main.
- 15:23TikTok's my biggest one right now.
- 15:25But, yeah, mckennafaithwinter's music.
- 15:28Well, McKenna, thank you so much for joining the show today, and thanks for being part of
- 15:32the scene.
- 15:33Yeah.
- 15:33Thank you for having me.
